It’s a welcome sight when the Crocuses and Daffodils burst into bloom and the days start getting a bit longer.

This month, our lovely friends at Woodland Classroom, who are local bushcraft and outdoor learning educators, encourage us to get outside more into nature and connect with our ‘inner hunter-gatherer’. It’s an interesting read, and especially important for our children, who seem to spend far too much time looking at a screen instead of the trees.

To celebrate Shrove Tuesday on the 5th of March we have found a tasty pancake recipe with a twist for you to try using mash potato. These lovely savoury pancakes go great with bacon and eggs, and would make a nice breakfast treat to serve up on Mothering Sunday on the 31st March.

Surprising Wellbeing Facts

Often findings simply confirm health advice that has been around for years, other times the conclusions are little bit more surprising. Take a look at some interesting wellbeing truths that might surprise you.

Optimistic people live longer.

Can seeing the glass half full really help you live longer? Studies have found that there is a connection between increasing levels of optimism with decreasing levels of death from disease, cancer and stroke. For example, those that had the highest levels of optimism had an almost 40% lower risk of heart disease.

If you are tired, exercise will help.

Exercise will give you more energy than sitting. Studies have found that during exercise the blood and oxygen flow through the body and this will give you more energy and improve your mood.

Try quick short bursts and feel an instant free energiser.

Sitting at a desk can increase death risk Office workers beware, as research from the University of Sydney found that office workers who sit for longer than ten hours a day at their desk had nearly 50 per cent increase in risk of death, in comparison to

people who sat for less than four hours a day. To counteract this health risk, try to introduce five minutes of activity every hour.

Short bursts of intense exercise better for weight loss.

A recent study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that short bursts of high intensity interval training (Hiit) are 28.5% more effective for weight loss than longer less intense workouts. A simple example of Hiit would be: 30 sec butt kicks, pause, 30 sec jump squats, pause, and 30 sec burpees.

Reading for at least thirty minutes a day can help you live almost two years longer.

A study over a 12 year period has shown that those who read for more than 3.5 hours a week were 23% less likely to die than those who didn’t read at all. The researchers are not sure why that is, but I would suggest you cut down on your TV time and pick up the EssentialsMAG or a book instead! Just in case.

A New Way To Pay

By EssentialsMAG tech contributor DAVID HUGHES Every once in a while, a new piece of technology comes along that not only redefines its category, but changes the way we live our lives. Just over 10 years ago, this happened with the launch of the iPhone. You can argue that it wasn’t the first smartphone, but there can be no arguing that - in 2007, at least - it was the best and years ahead of its time.

Today, on the back of the iPhone’s success, smartphones are so ubiquitous that the term smartphone is almost redundant; they are simply phones, but ironically are being used less and less to make calls. One relatively new function of these devices is to make payments; an option that is being increasingly adopted by retailers of all sizes. You may have seen the Apple Pay or Google Pay signs on shop windows and next to the tills.

So what does this mean? Put simply, the latest phones allow you to pay for things without having to root out your debit or credit card. In practice, it works in a similar way to Contactless but, unlike Contactless, it can utilise the security features on your phone to confirm the payment.

The setup process is fairly straightforward on both iOS (Apple) and Android (Google). With the latter, you will

need to download the Google Pay app, but with iOS, the functionality is built-in; just go to Settings, then Wallet and Apple Pay. If you search the Internet for “Set up Apple Pay” or “Set up Google Pay”, you will find full instructions. The app will guide you through the process of adding your card details, and cards from most of the major banks and building societies in the UK will work. On some Android devices, you will also need to switch on NFC. NFC stands for near-field communication: this is what the device uses to wirelessly connect to the card reader.

When you are paying for something in a shop that accepts Apple Pay or Google Pay, you simply hold your phone close to the card reader as you would a contactless card. What you need to do next will vary depending on the phone you have. For example: the newest iPhones will use Face ID to confirm your payment. This is just a quick introduction to using your phone to make payments. You will definitely face some anxiety the first time you try it, but when you trust that it works, it really is a very useful feature that is only likely to become more commonplace over the next few years.

China Highlights In November, I spent a week in China brushing up on my knowledge of this enormous but endlessly fascinating country. I stayed in three cities- Beijing, Xian & Chengdu, and from these bases, visited some amazing attractions.

From Beijing: Tiananmen Square - one of the largest public squares in the world which is said to hold a capacity crowd of over one million.

It houses not only the monument to the Peoples Heroes but is also the final resting place of Chairman Mao himself in the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong.

Forbidden City – a UNESCO World Heritage site and centre of the sacred Chinese empire for 500 years. It is a vast complex of over 900 beautifully decorated gates and pavilions covering 180 acres.

Hutongs - a traditional suburb built in the 13th century which reflected the Chinese system of Feng Shui with four hutongs joined together around a central courtyard.

The grey buildings and roofs were not as colourful as the imperial buildings with their bright colours and gold trimmings.

Here we joined a local family for lunch crowded around a table in their front room and were entertained by the man of the house on a traditional Erhu which is a bit like a 2-string upright violin.

The Great Wall – 1.5 to 2 hours away from Beijing where we were greeted by beautiful blue skies that framed the wall bringing to life all the pictures I had seen before.

The climb was very steep but you can go

at your own pace stopping along the way.

Arriving early was a good idea as it meant we missed the crowds.

Summer Palace - a holiday retreat for Emperors where the beautiful gardens are set around a huge manmade lake with decorated arches and pagodas dotted around. Walking The Long Corridor, one of the world’s longest outdoor passageways intricately decorated and leading to the Marble Boat Tea House was a must.

Temple of Heaven – set in a 267-hectare park this is one of the most perfect examples of Ming architecture, created as a place of worship for the Emperors.

Local people were relaxing and playing chess here - I even joined in some Tai Chi. From Xian: Terracotta Warriors – one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century found by a local farmer.

Over 7,000 life sized soldiers, horses and chariots buried with the Emperor Qin Shi Huang to defend him in the afterlife.

Chengdu - as the train finished its three hour journey from Xian to Chengdu, I thought the pandas and Chengdu would be a bit of an anti-climax after everything else we had seen. I was wrong!

The Panda Conservation Centre has over 80 pandas, varying in age. The park is set to resemble the mountain and forest regions in North Sichuan - where the Giant Pandas are from - with extensive bamboo trees all around. I spent so much time just watching these fantastic creatures play and eat. The nursery was a particular treat watching the baby pandas try to walk, climb and play.

The food in Chengdu was also very different to the other cities. It was far spicier with the influence of Szechuan peppers (although a little too spicy for me as I like milder flavours).

One of the biggest surprises for me was the sheer size of Chinese cities are, making journey times longer than you expect. For example, the population in Chengdu is 14 million: almost double that of London!

China is a shopper’s paradise and great value for money: credit cards are widely accepted so take a suitcase bigger than you need to bring your shopping back!

Gardening Tips and Advice March - Spring Arrives Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It's time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden.

What Does Resilience Mean?

By EssentialsMAG relationships contributor CAT WILLIAMS I am being asked more and more frequently about resilience - what it means, and how to teach it. An elastic band is a resilient object, it can be stretched in different ways and will return to its original size and shape.

I believe a resilient person is someone who uses strategies to cope with change and challenges, while keeping their self-belief and self-confidence in-tact.

The Hot Air Balloon Analogy: The basket – represents the parts of our life that ‘weigh us down’ i.e. situations or people that we don’t feel confident about, or that we don’t think we can cope with.

A resilient person knows that everyone has something they don’t feel okay about but that to keep the ‘basket’ small we must reassure ourselves that most fears will never happen, and even if they do, we will have the ability to cope with them. Fear can stand for ‘False Evidence Appearing Real’ – it’s not true that we aren’t strong enough to cope – we can do it!

The ropes – that keep the balloon on the ground represent the things that end up weighing us down even more. Stress triggers our bodies ‘fight or flight’ response which can cause us to ‘attack’ or ‘escape’ by getting angry or frustrated with other people, or trying to forget our worries using temporary strategies such as addictions to technology, alcohol etc.

These unfortunately don’t help us long-term.

The balloon – represents the ways we can lift ourselves up and maintain our confidence and self-belief! Strategies resilient people use include: a) Imagination –“if I was a person who felt okay with this, what would I do?” Using our imagination to bring us confidence is a very useful and powerful strategy. b) Asking for help – the strongest, and often the hardest, thing we can do is to ask, and keep asking, for help. c) Gratitude – resilient people find something to be grateful for, even it is just that they realise their own strength and the strength of others who help them through. d) Pleasure, Purpose and Peace.

Resilient people don’t forget to ‘fill their balloon’ with the things that lift them up!

Research-based examples include: being part of group (choir, band, team); exercise; sunshine; fresh air; hobbies; friendship; family; helping other people; swimming; looking at a view; being by natural water; eating healthily; getting enough sleep; reading; time with animals; being involved in the community; encouraging other people etc etc…

Legal Advice Questions & Answers

By EssentialsMAG legal advice contributor CAROL McGUIRE QUESTION: My husband left me and my four children and went to live with another woman. He is not paying any child maintenance and yet he thinks that he is entitled to call at any time he so chooses expecting me to allow the children to go to him and his partner.

I don’t think he has any rights to seeing his children and given that they are aged between 4 and 10, they are at a vulnerable age to be exposed to such a situation. What can I do?

ANSWER: First and foremost, the children’s’ welfare is of paramount importance. Whilst you may feel angry with him and are obviously devastated by his leaving you, you have to understand that such anger should not be portrayed through your children. Whether or not he pays maintenance is irrelevant to the children’s’ rights to see their father. You don’t say whether or not he might be paying the mortgage and household bills instead of maintenance but sometimes this often happens.

You may feel the advice that we have given is not exactly what you wanted to hear but it is important that you realise that the Courts will make every effort for a child to be able to see both parents.

We agree that it probably is too early for the children to be introduced to your husband’s partner because who knows the relationship could end in a matter of weeks and this would be very confusing for the children. We would say that the first step is for you to decide when you feel contact could take place. It may well be some hours over the course of the weekend. So maybe Saturday one week and Sunday the following week and/or maybe your husband meeting up with the children after school during the week.

If you feel that you cannot discuss the matter directly with your Husband, then I would suggest that you try mediation as an option. A Mediator will encourage both of you to attend a meeting with him/her and to try and resolve the position, rather than go through the Courts, which really should be the last resort. If such fails then you need to see your solicitor to talk you through your options.

EssentialsMAG Tasty Recipe

Potato Pancakes MAKES 12-15

INGREDIENTS 250g cold mashed potato, or 2 medium-size floury potatoes, cut into chunks 75g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 2 eggs 125ml milk 1 rounded tbsp finely snipped chives 1 tsp sunflower oil Knob of butter Crispy bacon and scrambled eggs to serve, if you like

METHOD If you’ve got potatoes not mash, cook them in boiling water until tender.

Drain well and press through a potato ricer or mash. Weigh out 250g and cool.

Sieve the flour and baking powder onto cooled mash. Whisk eggs and milk together and add to the potato mix with the chives. Whisk the batter until smooth.

Heat a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add ½ tsp sunflower oil and a dot of butter. When the fat is hot, start to cook the pancakes. Add 1 tbsp of batter for each pancake and cook 4 at a time. Cook for about 1 minute until the underside is golden brown and small bubbles appear.

Flip the pancakes and cook until golden. Remove from the pan and keep warm while you cook the remaining pancakes in the same way, adding a tiny bit of oil and butter to the pan as and when needed. Serve the pancakes in stacks with creamy scrambled egg and crisp rashers of streaky bacon.

By EssentialsMAG fitness contributor HELEN CONWAY Now I love a good story - a good book, a great film, but most of all, telling stories, and listening to stories from others. I am known as a story teller, using the opportunity in my classes to connect with my clients, to entertain them whilst they work, to take their mind off the tough moves I ask of them in class. I read stories in relaxation classes to enhance the whole experience. I love recounting the experiences of my life that have shaped my life. And I love to hear the stories of others.

The aim of World Storytelling Day is to celebrate the art of oral storytelling, with as many people as possible around the world telling and listening to stories in their own languages on the same day. People taking part can link up with others around the globe who are also contributing – making it a truly international festival that creates new friends and promotes positive understanding of cultures around the world! But you don't have to wait.

Start now.

The benefits of story telling for both children and adults are many: • • • • • •

Promotes a feeling of well-being and relaxation.

Increases willingness to communicate thoughts and feelings.

Encourages active participation.

Increases verbal proficiency.

Others have more general goals - helping the grandkids get on the housing ladder, to use their ISA allowance every year, or simply have more disposable income to enjoy. The key is - to have a plan, set some goals and enjoy the opportunity to take control of your money.

2) Paying Tax you don’t have to pay Have you used the allowances you are given wherever possible, before you lose them on 6th April for this year? Investment opportunities which allow you to shelter your capital within a tax efficient ISA or perhaps start to save into an ISA on a regular monthly basis exist. Adults can save or invest up to £20,000 each tax year. Parents and grandparents can start a youngster off with a Junior ISA (limit for the current year is £4,260).

3) Know your income and expenditure A simple one. Do you know how much of your monthly household income is spent on ‘essentials’ (all the direct debits for mortgage, loans, utilities, insurances etc), and discretionary spending - where you have a bit more control? If you do - great. The next question is... what happens to the rest of your

income? (And could some of it be working harder for you?).

4) The trouble with inflation Inflation won’t go away - and your savings are very unlikely to inflation proof themselves given the record low interest rates seen for over a decade now. The question is - how long can you afford to see your savings fall in value in real terms before you do something about it?

5) Pension plans Do you really understand what your current scheme will provide for you? How much will the tax man contribute for you (if you ask him) towards your retirement pot? Have you left old pensions behind you from previous jobs potentially idling away for years? If you don’t know the answers to the above it may be worth spending an hour with us to find them out - and understand exactly what you are entitled to do.

6) Gifting We write about this from time to time - mostly because it’s such a misunderstood topic. In truth and in short - you have limits available for you today to gift from capital AND from surplus income to your family or wider range of loved ones. But, these limits are only fully relevant in certain circumstances. IF you would like to help your family now (during your lifetime) improve their financial position, perhaps let us explain your options.

Healing Our Inner Hunter Gatherer You’ve probably heard the idea that we all have an inner child inside of us that may need healing. This aspect of ourselves may be where our fear and lack of self-worth resides. Many of our behavioural, emotional and relationship difficulties can stem from childhood hurts and trauma and how we internalised this trauma when we experienced it. Through good therapy and personal development we can learn how to accept, protect and love our inner child, so it no longer calls the shots and controls our reactions. There is a deeper and more ancient aspect or ourselves that needs nurturing too. Our inner hunter-gatherer, who resides much deeper in our psyche, in the genetic make-up of our ancestors!

Life takes a long time to evolve and adapt.

Our brains and bodies have been evolving for around six million years, and humans as we know them today evolved around 200,000 years ago. Around 11,000 years ago we evolved from foragers to farmers and then, only in the last 200 years have we have seen the rise of machine based industry and more recently the digital age.

So, in the blink of an evolutionary eye, we have gone from foraging, hunting, building our homes and living in tribes to a world where computers do much of our thinking for us. We live in brick boxes next door to each other yet many of us rarely communicate with our neighbours.

Modern lifestyles are fast paced, media tells us there is danger round every corner, yet it’s nothing we can actually run away from, so our stress levels and risk of depression are higher than ever before. We

don’t get enough sunlight, exercise, nutrition or regular contact with green spaces. No wonder the rate of suicide and sick leave at work due to stress is at record levels. Our bodies and brains are confused and not built to be living in such conditions.

If around 99% of our evolutionary past was spent as hunter-gatherers then surely our brains are just not wired to deal with traffic jams, desk jobs, school exams and huge amounts of screen time.

As a Counsellor and Mindfulness in the Woods Practitioner I regularly take my therapeutic work outdoors, into the woodland for 1-2-1 sessions and group work. I earnestly believe in the power of nature to heal and invigorate, to nurture and nourish the soul and provide a safe place where we can truly feel at home and be our natural selves.

Here’s a few things you can do to make time to heal your inner hunter-gatherer.

Above all else, take time for yourself in nature, just slow down and take notice of the natural world around. You can try foraging, plant identification, bird watching, cooking over a campfire or simply get lost exploring wild places.

A Little Bit of Hope Delivered in a Box Whilst many of us are still wondering where to put all our children’s Christmas gifts, Wrexham based charity Teams4U sent 51,315 shoebox-sized parcels to children overseas who may never (neither for their birthday or Christmas) have received a gift before in their lifetime.

In their sixth year of their Shoebox Appeal, Teams4U were able to send these Christmas Shoeboxes to orphanages in Minsk, Belarus; to marginalised communities in Bralia, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea and Tulcea in Romania; and to displaced people-groups in Breza, Bosnia.

Teams4U have now secured a permanent warehouse and office space as their HQ in Unit 8, Llay Industrial Estate.

Ziz York, who works for Teams4U, travelled with a team of volunteers to distribute the gifts in Oradea, Romania. She said:

Teams4U’s founder, Dave Cooke said: “No-one could ever have thought that such a simple thing – a small box filled with a few toys and some practical things like toothpaste and a hairbrush – could be so powerful or so treasured in the lives of children around the world.”

Teams4U, established in 2006, sends around eight volunteer teams a year on 10-day projects into Africa and Eastern Europe plus supporting various long-term education and health programs focused on alleviating poverty and enabling children to access school.

One of their most well-known projects, outside of their shoebox appeal, is Develop with Dignity, a program that not only provides schoolgirls with washable sanitary pads but also supports the training of teachers in delivering accurate education on menstrual and reproductive health in Uganda & Sierra Leone.

“I will never forget this day when I realised that in one of the school’s classrooms, I’d spotted my own daughter’s box given to an 8-year-old girl, Alexia. This was my third distribution trip and I’d never seen one of my children’s boxes handed out.

Alexia opened her box and every breath was ‘wow’ as she examined each small soft toy and a hand-knitted hat. One of the toys was from a MacDonald’s Happy Meal and I couldn’t help thinking that these things were so common-place in my house but Alexia handled it like it was treasure.

I can’t put into words how humbled I felt in that moment.”

Teams4U would like to thank everyone who put together a shoebox or donated to the appeal and helped make so many Christmas dreams come true for these children.

Age UK Later Life Planning Service “My Mum needs immediate residential care, but the nursing home of our choice won’t take her without Lasting Powers of Attorney and a funeral plan in place” “I have just been diagnosed with dementia, what can I do about the future?”

These and many more are some of the questions that prompted Age UK Cheshire to launch their Later Life Planning Service in June 2018. The service is run by Mark Brankin, Later Life Planning Officer who is based at Age UK Cheshire’s Queen Street office in Chester.

Mark commented: “We recognised a need to provide costeffective solutions for people who didn’t know where to start regarding planning for the future and later life. As a qualified will writer, I can advise on, and complete Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) with our clients. We have also invested in leading software, and become members of the Society of Will Writers, which provides the appropriate professional back-up, indemnity insurance etc.”

Whilst most people have an idea of what a will is, amazingly 67% of the people in the North West do not have one. Equally importantly people are less aware of the need and value of Lasting Powers of Attorney. They are a legal document which enables the people of your choice to help you make decisions or to make them on your behalf should you suffer mental incapacity.

When we talk about mental incapacity we immediately think of dementia, however other things can affect us at any age: A stroke; accident or an infection can all lead to incapacity.

The Age UK Cheshire Later Life Planning Service provides a professional, responsive and understanding solution to the question of how to go about arranging Powers of Attorney, throughout the area.

Often the need for a Lasting Power of Attorney is only realised at a time of upset and upheaval. At Age UK Cheshire we pride ourselves on our approach to these situations and a chat with us can take a weight of your mind. It also gives the client the opportunity to access other help through the services of the charity.
