Welcome... Welcome to our November issue! It’s November already! Who else thinks it should only be April?! With everything that’s going on it feels like 2020 is galloping away from us so fast I can hardly keep up! November is normally when we start looking forward to Bonfire Night and in previous years it’s been a joy to see the stunning local organised displays that are so popular with families and children. Of course, this year is quite different with Halloween and Bonfire night being cancelled. November is also the time when we commemorate the fallen on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday which this year is on 8th November. I’m comforted to know that the Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph in London is still going ahead, but only as a Government led closed ceremony, with a much-reduced appearance by the members of the Armed Forces. Like so many things this year, the Poppy Appeal has had to adapt too and are asking the public to support them like never before. Remembrance Sunday at Rossett Due to the current lockdown the observance of Remembrance Sunday this year will be very different to that which is customary within the village. Sadly, it will not be feasible to hold a service in the church building itself. There will be a short service at the memorial in the churchyard at 10:45am to include the Act of Remembrance at 11am. However, to adhere to the maximum number of 30 people permissible under Welsh Government Regulations, attendance will be by INVITATION ONLY to various community representatives. In the interests of everyone's safety we kindly ask people who are not invited to avoid gathering at the memorial between 10:30am-11:30am on Sunday 8th November. Individuals are very welcome to lay poppies or other appropriate symbols at the memorial at any other times during the Remembrance season. There will also be an online Remembrance Service video available on the church Facebook page with some of the children at St. Peter's taking part. In addition, we hope to arrange a simple Remembrance Trail incorporating signiďŹ cant war graves within the churchyard. More information will be available on the church and village Facebook pages. Please do continue to observe Remembrance Sunday and support the Poppy Appeal this year, albeit in a very different way. www.britishlegion.org.uk

Living Advent Calendar Villagers in Gresford and Marford are planning to spread Christmas cheer in a unique way this year. The Marford and Gresford Living Advent Calendar will see selected residents and businesses decorating their windows with a variety of festive displays. Organiser Helen Mellor said: "Each of the houses and businesses taking part will have a set date they will unveil their window at 6.30pm. That could mean opening curtains, taking a covering down or lighting the window up. Behind, there will be a lovely Christmas scene. I thought it would be a great way for our community to enjoy the build-up to Christmas in a COVID-safe way.â€? Local News Gresford WI Celebrates 75 years The Women’s Institute (WI) are the largest women's organisation in the UK and pride themselves on being a trusted place for women of all generations to share experiences and learn from each other. Last month Gresford WI celebrated its 75th Year. In 1985 local resident Gwen Strong joined Gresford WI. “I joined Gresford WI 35 years ago, and at that time I was the youngest member. All members were very welcoming, and being a complete novice, they took me under their wing.” Said Gwen. “Over the years we’ve enjoyed dinners, suppers, afternoon teas on boats, trains, canal boats, in castles, hotels, pubs and restaurants at various locations around the country. Speakers and events have been just as varied ranging from cookery, flower, and makeup demonstrations, to fashion shows, singers, comedians, slide shows, historical speakers and others too numerous to mention. I am now the longest member of Gresford WI (not the oldest!), and I can honestly say that I have very fond memories, have met, and made friends with some lovely people, and joining Gresford WI was one of the best things that I did 35 years ago!”
Bargee Bill Towpath Tales Eccleston resident, Bill Bradley (alias Bargee Bill), worked for many years as a Boatman steering restaurant boats up and down the Bridgewater, Trent and Mersey Canals and lived with his family at Oakwood Cottage - a Lock Keepers cottage on The Shropshire Union Canal. During lockdown 80-year-old Bill decided to put pen to paper and write a series of children's books called Ebb and Flows Towpath Tales. The main characters are Ebb the Lock Keeper and his wife Flow, and the stories are loosely based on true events that happened when the family lived at Oakwood Cottage. All Saints’ Church Christmas Tree Festival All Saints’ Church, Gresford, are once again planning to hold a Christmas Tree Festival... but with a difference! This year they are planning on turning their very popular Christmas Tree Festival into an outdoor event to be held in the churchyard. All monies raised will go to Nightingale House and Hope House Hospices. Already, ten groups have signed-up to the event and more details are expected to be published soon.

Update - Gresford Community Council COVID-19: We urge residents to be extra careful during this ‘second wave’, and please adhere to the government’s latest messages and guidance which can be found on our website www.gresford.org.uk/covid-19community-support-and-information.html. Extra signage will be located in the Play Areas to remind parents and children to allow space and play safely, following complaints received. Due to COVID restrictions we will only be able to locate the Remembrance poppies in key locations this year. CHRISTMAS SEASON: The village Christmas tree will be erected in its usual location in early December. Due to costs we have decided against any additional Christmas lighting this year. The Community Council sends very best wishes for an enjoyable Christmas, and for a Happy and Healthy 2021, with grateful thanks to all residents and businesses for supporting one another through this past very difficult year.
Holt Community Gardeners - News Holt Community Gardeners are delighted to announce that National Lottery Awards for All have awarded us a second grant for our polytunnel project at the community allotment. This award will enable us to complete the fitting out of the polytunnel and provide accessories to help our community thrive. These will include a watering system, a height adjustable potting table, tall cold frames, special flooring, equipment to moderate temperature and other important items. The polytunnel is important, because it provides an accessible area that is sheltered and warm. Gardening tasks, such as potting on, have already been carried out safely under COVID-19 restrictions and have involved a range of people from our village. We know that there are people who have found community gardening beneficial especially at a time like this. And, throughout restrictions over the Summer we have continued to provide free produce to many vulnerable people including those who are shielding The polytunnel will enable us to grow plants for those areas of the village which we are enhancing, and it will also provide an important facility for growing under cover fruit and vegetables to continue to be distributed throughout our community. This is an investment for our future which we hope will help the health and wellbeing of members of our village.

A good night’s sleep If getting your eight hours of shut-eye is a constant battle, regular exercise as part of your evening routine can help relax your muscles and tire you out. The ability to rest helps you find the sleep you’ve been missing and provides a boost to your mind's health.
Training the brain Exercise not only encourages the brain to release helpful, positive chemicals, but it can increase the size of our hippocampus, the part responsible for our memory. Furthermore, more connections between our nerve cells help to protect our minds from mental illness. Boom!
A welcome distraction Exercise allows you to break any negative thought patterns that feed your low mood, giving you something else to focus on. So, when you are feeling down, just go for a walk, do a few stretches, grab a hoola hoop and give it a spin. Add your favourite tunes and you’ll be flying!
Release tension Sometimes feelings of low mood can be caused by persistent aches and pains in our muscles, bones and other areas of the body. Aerobic exercise like walking or yoga can ease the tension in these areas and decrease any discomfort, making it a great type of exercise for mental health.
Outlet for frustrations We all get angry and frustrated on occasion and finding a healthy outlet for those feelings is important to ensure they don’t affect your health or personal relationships. By releasing feel-good chemicals, exercise helps the frustration to subside. Hoop hoop hooray! (God knows we all need a bit of that right now).
Exercise and achievement Exercise is great for giving us goals to aim for. Pushing for achieving these goals gives us feelings of accomplishment and selfworth, which in turn makes us feel happier about our lives in general. But, I guess you knew that already!

Selling Your Tech By EssentialsMAG tech contributor DAVID HUGHES “When’s the new iPhone coming out?” This is a question I get asked a lot. I’m known to be a bit of an Apple fanboy; the type who drives their family mad by watching the unveiling of the latest iPhone live from California over the dinner table (yes, they stream it live!). There are those of us who are always waiting for the next thing, ready to throw money at the richest companies in the world. What this inevitably leads to is a need to get rid of our old device, and there are plenty of ways to do this, but there are some steps you need to take before you actually sell, donate or part-exchange. Step 1: Backup Whether you are selling a phone, tablet or computer - there will be important documents, contacts, photos and music on it that you don’t want to lose. Much of this is backed-up in some way these days anyway, but it never harms to do a full back up before moving on to the second step. Step 2: Sign out The services we use on these devices often have access to just as much personal information as is held on the device itself, so it’s important that you sign out of these services, either in the application or via a browser. For example, if you use iCloud services like ‘Find my’ iPhone (or Android’s ‘Find my Device’), you should go into the settings and disable/remove the device you are selling from the service.
Step 3: Reset In order to remove the remaining information from your device, you should now reset it to factory settings. This can be done in the ‘Settings’ app of most phones and tablets. On a more modern Android device, you should also turn off the factory reset protection (FRP) and encrypt your data before resetting. Step 4: Remove SIM This one is specific to phones and some cellular enabled tablets. If your device can connect to a cellular network, it likely has a physical SIM card. You need to remove this. This is only a basic overview of the steps you should take. Obviously, each device and operating system is slightly different, and I suggest you search for instructions on the device manufacturer’s website. Also, if you are looking to swap your existing device with a new one from the same manufacturer, I would recommend visiting them in-store, as they will help you through the steps above whilst also setting up your new device. Starting Over There is a stained-glass window on the stairwell of the apartment above Botany House Antiques & Collectables on Farndon High Street, engraved ‘Carpe Diem - Seize the Day’ - installed by previous owner, Paul Burrell. Little did Beverley Davies know how prophetic those words would be when she offered to sell Paul’s shop fixtures and fittings for his charities when he retired his flower shop in 2019. “I spent a lot of time in the shop, cataloguing the fittings, and Paul kindly allowed me to put some of my larger eBay items in the windows while the building was on the market,” says Beverley. “Villagers were suddenly bringing in items for me to sell on commission for them and the shop was active again; I never dreamt it would become a new career for me!” Beverley had been an Executive PA since leaving college, a role she loved. However, the sudden death of her stepfather, Harold, in late 2016, resulted in some life-changing decisions. “The long hours I was working were no longer compatible with taking over Harold’s role as my mum’s carer. Something had to give and unfortunately it was the job I loved, but there was no alternative; family comes first. An unexpected windfall several months later gave me the chance to change direction - but I needed something to do that allowed me the flexibility I needed for my mum’s well-being. One thing I did know was that I wanted to work for myself - I’d had enough of the “jump - how high? culture”, smart suits and office politics and was enjoying my freedom.
I was also enjoying the time I spent in Paul’s shop, discovering the joy of just ‘being’ and having the time to chat with people. “In May 2019 my partner, Mark, and I realised that this opportunity would not come again, so we ‘seized the day’ and viewed the property as potential buyers. We moved home in September and Botany House Antiques & Collectables became a reality. We can’t thank Paul and his husband, Graham, enough for their kindness and support throughout this life-changing process. It’s been hard work, but we’re loving this new life.” Botany House Antiques & Collectables sells all things antique, vintage and collectable on commission for clients (including social media) and is venturing into select house clearances and home-dressing. “I have learnt a lot in the last few years and every day brings new challenges, but it is great fun”, says Beverley. “I have the support of Mark and some amazing friends who have antiques in their psyche, so the business is starting to grow. Travel Update From Your Local Travel Agent By EssentialsMAG travel contributor Ann Anglesea at DELMAR WORLD in Gresford Hello everyone. I hope you are well, despite the ongoing challenges. We have been busy answering lots of travel questions this month from those of you who are bursting to get away or maybe just want to plan a getaway for next year but need more information before taking the plunge (no pun intended!). Travel Now Many of our clients who have recently taken a cheeky week in the sun have been pleasantly surprised by how easy the airport and hotel experience has smoothly adapted to COVIDsafe measures. The great European, classical cities are open to visitors and clients who have travelled recently have relished the opportunity to explore the museums and galleries in peace and tranquillity. There is also extraordinary value for money to be had at the moment, with all airlines and hotels keen to keep busy. Local restaurants are also taking immense pride in looking after guests. The downside to escaping our ‘Groundhog Day’ existence in the next couple of months is that COVID restrictions are changing on a regular basis so, depending on where you are travelling to, it could involve a COVID test prior to your departure or on arrival (or both) as well as a two week quarantine on your return. For me, personally, combining quality family and friends time with a trip abroad sounds just the job for a future light at the end of the tunnel. I don’t think I am alone in this wish, so it is worth bearing in mind that, once COVID restrictions have been lifted, the demand for travel will be high. And 70% of holidaymakers whose holidays were cancelled this year have already re-booked with us for next year - so this will add to the volume of demand. My advice, therefore, is to look ahead and think about your holiday for next year now: this will secure the best price and availability ahead of the rush. To encourage this, most tour operators are now offering flexible booking conditions that will allow you to cancel your arrangements without penalty up to just a few days before travel.

Next month I will focus on the cruise industry and give you an update on the COVID-safe measures being put in place as well as when cruise ships intend to get sailing again. By EssentialsMAG gardening contributor CAROL EDWARDS You might think that with the start of November nothing needs doing in our gardens! However, there are a number of jobs to do before the bad weather really sets in. I for example have started to sort out my pots - some of which have become quite overgrown and messy. I have an old Belfast sink full of herbs which is far too crowded, to remedy this I will cut the herbs, chop them up and freeze them in an ice cube tray - this is very useful for adding to soups and stews during the winter, and next year I will replant with fresh ones. I also have a large pot with a bayleaf plant, I will cut this down and hang the branches indoors to dry then replace the top layer of compost. It is a good idea to raise your pots off the ground using pot feet or bricks in winter too as it stops them getting waterlogged. My beech tree leaves have started to turn a lovely golden colour which always cheers my day, but by the time this article comes out we will be knee deep in them, the leaves of this tree take several years to break down into compost so I don’t keep them. I don’t have any heating in my greenhouse so am limited in seeds and plants I can grow during the winter. However, small pots of herbs such as basil, dill. and parsley can be grown successfully on a kitchen windowsill. Winter is also a good time to make plans for next year whether it’s any plants to buy or changes to the layout of your garden. There are some good websites and a lot of plant suppliers send out catalogues which make interesting reading Back to outdoors and onion sets and garlic can be planted now as well. My wildflower garden is looking better as I have planted quite large plants such as foxgloves, wallflowers and borage which was given to me by one of my neighbours so many thanks Julie. Local Birds & Wildlife By Rev. Hugh Linn Recently our back garden has become something of a magpie magnet. After the breeding season young Magpies usually leave their parents and become independent. Our local pair successfully reared four chicks which, after fledging, stayed with their parents and now the whole family travel around together in a tightly-knit group.

Recently, no doubt attracted by their regular noisy visits to the bird feeders, they have been joined by four more birds. We now have the full complement to fulfil the traditional saying that the number of Magpies has a magical power to predict the future JAY "One for sorrow. Two for joy. Three for a girl. Four for a boy..." Worryingly the number 10's prediction is the Devil himself! At this time of year Magpies are usually seen in pairs but other members of the Crow family, such as Jackdaws and Rooks, are gregarious and habitually form large flocks, sometimes numbering hundreds of birds. As a family all the Corvids are resourceful and inventive. Typically our Magpies have been making provision for the winter by burying (caching) food items in the lawn. Last month near Borras Quarry a pair of Jays were busily picking mature acorns from an oak tree and carrying them off to bury nearby. This habit not only benefits Jays when food is short but also helps to spread oak trees to sites where saplings can grow freely out of the shade of existing trees. Borras Quarry is a favourite site for a large flock of migrating Lapwings. Some of these birds may remain throughout the winter while others are transitory migrants and move on to wintering grounds elsewhere. Skylarks and Meadow Pipits have recently been on the move. Small groups have been spotted flying south over Burton where a number of migratory Wagtails have been resting on rooftops to make the most of late autumn sun. Borras Quarry's large flock of geese is mainly composed of resident species (Canadas and Greylags). At this time of year our wildfowl population is boosted by migrants from the north. In recent years over a dozen different species of Swans, Geese and Ducks have been recorded locally.

Sarah Atherton MP Member of Parliament for Wrexham I have made numerous socially distanced visits to speak with residents, community groups, and businesses since my last article. Not only has this given me the opportunity to listen to your concerns and help in every way that I can, but it has also given me the opportunity to see some fantastic community initiatives first-hand; from community gardening to the planned establishment of community hub, it has been truly heartwarming to see our community come together to support each other and improve our local area. I was pleased to get involved with other residents in a socially distanced and COVID-safe manner, in order to keep our area clean and tidy during the ‘Great British September Clean’. The litter pick, organised by members of Wrexham Rotary club, saw residents’ join forces to collect over 20 bags of rubbish in just two hours. A big thank you to everyone who came out to help. I’m glad to be supporting Wrexham Rotary Club’s ‘Rainbow Bag’ scheme, a fantastic initiative that parcels up children’s toys as well as food parcels for some of the most vulnerable local children over the festive period. What a way to bring the festive spirit to those in our community who need it most. Citizens Advice Wrexham The Coronavirus pandemic has pushed many people into debt that will take them years to get out of. Citizens Advice estimate that it would take an average person that we help with debt problems at least 30 months to pay back just their priority debts, assuming that they spent their entire disposable income on repayments each month. The figures show: • Around 250,000 people in Wales (17% of the total workforce) have already seen their hours cut, been laid off, or made redundant as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak. • Four out of 10 people (42%) have lost household income because of this crisis, with nearly one in 14 (7%) losing 80% or more of their household income. • One in four people (25%) have applied or expect to apply for benefits as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. Overall, we estimate that six million UK adults have fallen behind on at least one household bill during the pandemic. • • • • •

Easy Mince Pies MAKES 12 INGREDIENTS 225g cold butter, chopped 350g plain flour 100g icing sugar, plus extra for dusting 410g jar mincemeat
METHOD Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Rub the butter into the flour and icing sugar with your fingertips, or blend in a food processor, until the mixture comes together in a ball – you don’t need to add any liquid or chill it. Knead briefly, then cut into 12 equal pieces. Taking a piece of dough at a time, cut off two-thirds and press into the base and up the sides of a muffin tin hole. Repeat to make 12. Spoon the mincemeat into the pastry cases – it won’t completely fill them. Now take the 12 remaining smaller pieces of pastry. Roll each into a ball and flatten to make a disc for the mince pie lid. Add one to each pie and tuck the pastry that comes up the sides of the tin down to seal it. Or use a cookie cutter for a festive shaped pie lid. Prick the tops with a fork a few times. At this stage they will freeze for up to 6 weeks. Defrost before baking. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until pale golden. Cool in the tins for about 10 minutes, then give the pies a little twist to stop them from sticking. When cool, carefully remove from the tins. Dust with icing sugar when ready to serve, and enjoy with a cup of tea!

Hello everybody nice to be back with you all again. So, let’s go back to the 70’s TV show Crackerjack. They had a game called ‘Double or Drop’ - answer a question wrong and you would get a cabbage to carry with prizes you had won too. I’d love to have as much cabbage as I could carry now! They are so good for you as they are packed with Vitamin C and K and are also full of fibre and folic acid too. Two years ago, at a church service, I was reunited with a couple of friends from 20 years prior. During our catch-up my friend told me how her husband was suffering with severe stomach problems and was not able to sleep at night. He had been attending hospital appointments for over eight months and nobody could understand how to help him. I was excited to tell her about green cabbage, that he should eat as much cabbage as possible and definitely drink raw cabbage juice (use of a juicing machine). I told him to drink cabbage juice specifically about three times daily. I had learnt the benefits from an article I had read how people were cured of stomach ulcers and other stomach associated problems by drinking cabbage juice.
We kept in touch and he actually felt some relief after a couple of days and two weeks after his pain and discomfort had totally gone. He thanked me for curing him, but it wasn’t me it was the acid glutamine in the cabbage that did all the work. Eating fruits and vegetables has so many benefits for you, your family and friends. Cabbages can give relief if somebody is feeling constipated because of the fibre content. Expectant mums are recommended to eat cabbage also as it contains folic acid. A cabbage can be rather smelly to cook but it naturally will flush out all the toxins you have picked up from the environment during the day as it’s an alkaline food. It also helps with the anti-aging process, weight loss too and is a great immunity booster. A cabbage was given for wrong answers on Crackerjack, but to me it’s actually the right answer when it comes to your health and wellbeing. All Saints’ School, Gresford Latest News
It has been a pleasure to welcome our wonderful pupils back to school and to see how well our pupils are engaging in their learning. During difficult times such as this, the strength of the school community really does shine through and we are all incredibly grateful for the support that has been shown to us at school. We would like to thank everyone for their support and cooperation with the changes to drop off and collection and for making everything run so smoothly. September has seen us welcome the Gresford Playgroup Ducks and Ducklings to the school site. A strong partnership has existed between the playgroup and school for many years and we see this move as a sure way to strengthen this partnership further, whilst supporting pupils as they transition from playgroup to our school. The admissions round for Reception-aged pupils to start school in September 2021 is now live on the Wrexham Council website. Holding open days for perspective parents and carers is not possible during the pandemic, but I am very happy to show prospective parents and carers around school and to answer any questions that they may have after school hours. Everyone at school is grateful for the contributions of resources and time as part of these projects. As the new Curriculum for Wales continues to gather pace, work is underway to develop a broad and balanced curriculum that puts the pupil at the heart. Our Year 5 and 6 pupils have been learning all about World War Two in the context of Gresford. Pupils in Years 3 and 4 are exploring the impact of plastic pollution on the environment and our Foundation Phase are investigating Gresford and what pupils’ locality means to them. Financial News with Hadlow Edwards The Parachute Shop You may have to bear with me - at least a few sentences on this one! Can you remember the last time you walked into a Parachute Shop? No? Me neither.
A simple question, if I may If I pulled a cheque out of my pocket and put it face down on the table in front of you - how much would the cheque have to be for to allow you to stop working (and never work again) with effect from today?
Let’s imagine we walked into one today. Lined up along the wall are a whole bunch of parachutes to choose from. The very cheapest at the left, the mid-priced ones in the middle and the best in the shop towards the right.
The answer - is a decent guide as to how much life cover you may need. I rarely lose the debate about ‘levels of cover’. Seriously two or three years ‘Death in Service’ cover or £50,000 life cover will not see young kids through school - let alone further education.
Who would look to the left and consider buying at the very budget end of the rail for this type of purchase? Not many I would suggest. For literally a ‘life or death’ purchase I think most people would buy the very best and most reliable ‘chute they could afford. Perhaps in the middle of the rail or to the right.
When something as important as protecting your family is at stake (a bit like buying a parachute I reckon) - get it right please. We help many families do just that. We also see a lot of Grandparents now helping their family by paying the premiums each year for quality cover to be put in place.
What’s the relevance/connection between parachutes and financial planning - I can hear you ask (almost)?
I fully accept that budget/affordability is understandably a key issue for many young families. But my steer is - don’t buy rubbish. Buy as close as possible to exactly what you need and improve on it when you can. Many policies offer ‘guaranteed insurability’ where you can take cover out today and increase it in time to come as your family and budget grows.
Well, something I see quite often is absolute ‘budget’ life insurance or critical illness cover advertised. Some people buy it. Often the plans offer low levels of cover and are not underwritten (assessed against your health, medical condition and lifestyle) at the outset. Critical Illness plans offering a small range of illnesses covered where you would be paid out, can be cheap. For good reason.

Lesley Griffiths MS Member of the Senedd for Wrexham I wish I could bring you all some more positive news but, unfortunately, coronavirus continues to dominate the agenda. The situation is changing frequently. Despite the promising summer, there was always concern the virus would return as we approached the winter period. Tighter restrictions were first announced for Wrexham at the beginning of October. Although the original announcement was a surprise to many, I think most will agree the subsequent weeks have demonstrated it was the right thing to do. There was an expectation coronavirus cases would rise and this has been reflected in the data. Sadly, although the local restrictions instigated in many parts of Wales helped, the virus’ acceleration meant more needed to be done. On Friday 23 October, the twoweek firebreak was introduced to help bring coronavirus under control. Expert medical and scientific advisors were unanimous that a short, sharp firebreak would give us an opportunity to reset. Without a significant reduction in transmission, it was believed the impact on hospitals and intensive care units would have been too high for the NHS to sustain. The Welsh Government wanted to ensure we came out on the other side better prepared. During the fortnight, more staff were hired to strengthen the Test Trace Protect system and the NHS focused on deploying its field hospitals. It is a difficult balancing act. As a member of the Welsh Government, we act on the latest scientific evidence and every decision is considered carefully and thoroughly. The overriding aim is to help keep people safe.
This has already been a challenging period for many businesses and I recognise the stricter restrictions created further difficulties. Throughout this pandemic, I have been supporting and updating local firms as best I can. I have regularly attended Wrexham’s Town Centre Forum and am pleased the Welsh Government has been able to offer a generous financial package to businesses. All those affected by the firebreak have been supported with a new £300m fund. The support from the Economic Resilience Fund is unique to Wales and has been critical to hundreds of Wrexham businesses, helping protect the livelihoods of many local residents. A Burning Issue By EssentialsMAG environment contributor ROB RENOUF On a global scale, we’re seeing plenty of evidence of the harm caused by burning things. Use of fossil fuels is producing global warming and damaging our health. The World Health Organisation estimates that air pollution is reducing global average life expectancy by one year and eight months. Even a small fire in our garden can have negative impacts on the environment. Bonfires are illegal in many places such as Ireland and France, but not in the UK. However, allowing the smoke to become a danger to traffic, or causing frequent nuisance, are offences and can result in a fine of up to £5,000. COVID-19 restrictions may mean queuing for longer at the household waste site, but they’re no excuse for fly-tipping or burning waste. The GOV.UK website says “you cannot get rid of household waste if it will cause pollution or harm people’s health. This includes burning it.” Burning materials such as plastic, rubber or wood that’s been painted or treated can release toxic chemicals. Even where having a fire isn’t illegal, I’d argue against it for the following reasons: Consideration for others - unless you live in the middle of nowhere, a fire will probably affect other people. Smoke can make it unpleasant (and potentially dangerous) for others to be
outside, or force them to close doors and windows. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service says that “smoke from garden waste fires produces carbon monoxide and pollutants that can irritate airways, the skin and eyes. This can cause coughing, wheezing and chest pain, particularly if it is damp and smouldering, affecting people with asthma and other respiratory diseases.” In addition to these inhalation risks, toxic particles can be deposited on the ground and plants, and can then easily enter the food chain. Wildlife - a pile of branches provides a perfect home for many creatures who could be killed or injured if it’s burnt. Hedgehogs may be the first animal that comes to mind, but amphibians such as frogs, toads and newts will often move in, as will insects. Indirect environmental impacts in addition to the air pollution resulting from a fire, it can also have indirect impacts. Tumble dryers consume lots of electricity, so line drying is one of the best things we can do to save energy. Just one person having a fire can mean dozens of other people having to resort to tumble drying.

A New Awareness and Resilience Coronavirus has brought a new awareness and resilience as well as tragedy. We must build on that. The coronavirus pandemic and the exceptional circumstances in which it has forced us all to live, has had an unprecedented impact on our daily lives and brought a wide range of new challenges, on personal and business levels. As a multi-discipline legal practice working across most areas of law, we have seen firsthand the severity of the COVID impact and as a firm we have experienced a completely different balance in respect of the type of work we have been asked to do. But it has also been refreshing to see many positives coming out of a situation so globally dire. In general people have become much more aware of their legal responsibilities, and their rights, and that can only be a good thing. They have also become keener to seek advice in areas where they have been uncertain, no longer frightened to speak out in the face of more serious situations around them. Houses are being bought and sold at a new rate due to the temporary abolition of stamp duty and land transaction tax; wills have been written by young people who previously would not have bothered, or updated by those whose circumstances have changed; powers of attorney have been requested by parents, widows and widowers and single people; employers have updated employee contracts and workers have had more time to reflect on the fairness of the terms and conditions by which they are bound. Whilst some of the more tragic effects of COVID include mental health issues, domestic violence and the courts not sitting, lawyers have still been able to operate and progress cases towards a resolution. Whether that has been protecting the rights of vulnerable patients detained under the Mental Health Act and acting for their relatives, or acting to help provide a safe environment for the abused and get emergency court hearings by video link, finding a route through the problems has still proved possible. All of this shows that we are a resilient society, and with the help of expert specialists we can and will get through this pandemic.

Gresford Trust Newsdesk By Jenny Dutton Congratulations on the 75th birthday of Gresford Women’s Institute, which has met at the Trust for many years in the Community hall, and for a short time at the Constitutional Club. The current President, Lynne Humphries and her committee laid plans in January for members to celebrate together on October 14th, but sadly COVID-19 rules meant a change of plan. During lockdown, the 59 members kept in touch and supported each other by phone, virtual activities, Gresford WI Facebook page, lively newsletters from their President and, more recently, socially distanced picnics on the Trust field. However the Committee was determined that the 75th birthday should not pass unmarked and every member received a birthday card featuring the W.I. garden, a commemorative slate coaster and a voucher to spend at Fresh and Tasty. Proposed Gas Governor Station COVID-19 has had a significant impact on local businesses. As a social enterprise the Trust’s closure in the Spring and current limited opening has had a major impact on cash flow. Charity Trustees have a statutory duty to ensure that the financial position of the Trust is always protected. In aiming to ensure the continued viability of this amazing community facility Trustees are considering the leasing of a small area of land to Wales and West Utilities Limited (WWU). It is important to note that this is a lease albeit on a long-term basis not a sale of land and full title of ownership will remain with the Trust. This mirrors our current arrangements with Gresford Community Council in relation to Allington Park and Gresford Royal British Legion who both similarly lease land from the Trust. Full details of the associated planning application can be viewed via the relevant portal on the WCBC website. WWU is a licensed gas transporter with the relevant statutory duties and powers set out in the Gas Act 1986 and has responsibility for the principle gas distribution network in Wales. WWU have submitted a planning application to WCBC for permission to erect a small gas governor station, housing two gas governor kiosk units, on a small area of land within Gresford Recreation Ground on the former basketball court to the rear of the Grounds man’s Storage Building. The sole purpose of this proposal is to reduce the gas pressure from transmission levels to distribution levels. This will ensure the continued supply of gas to the residents of Gresford and other surrounding business customers.

Pulford & Poulton Local History Group By EssentialsMAG history contributor JAMES HARVEY The Domesday Book which documents a survey carried out in 1086 provides a detailed description of the state of the country both prior to and following the Norman conquest. Landed estates, called manors, are named with their tenants, the amount and type of land held and the number of people occupying the land (villeins, smallholders, free men, slaves, etc.), together with the value of the land, its assets and tax assessment. Temporary Norman control of the kingdom of Gwynnedd meant part of north-east Wales was included in the Cheshire survey so Gresford and Allington, Dodleston, Pulford, Poulton, Eccleston, Eaton and Farndon all appear. Of these, Farndon was the largest with 35 households while Pulford had only seven. When much of the north of England rebelled against William in 1069-70 he dealt with it harshly and Chester did not escape. Domesday records that of the 500 houses standing before the conquest, 205 were destroyed and much of the city was wasted. Before 1066 land in Cheshire had been held by Earl Edwin of Mercia and Anglo-Saxon Thanes but after the conquest it was appropriated by William. Locally, Earl Edwin had held Dodleston, Eaton and part of Farndon. In 1071 William installed Hugh d’Avranches, commonly known as Hugh Lupus, as Earl of Chester. From that time, apart from what was held by the church,
all land in the shire was under the control of Earl Hugh. Locally he held Eaton for himself while he distributed the other manors to several of his barons as tenants. The Welsh border was the only area in England where waste is recorded for 1066. This would have been land that was uncultivated and depopulated, quite likely due to military activity, and therefore not liable for tax. Gresford is recorded as ‘all waste’ in 1066. Many more areas in the north were ‘wasted’ after 1066 and Eccleston, Farndon, Pulford and Allington all ‘had waste’ when acquired by their Norman tenants. The church, in the form of the Bishop of Chester at St. John’s and the canons of St. Werburgh’s, held land in Farndon and Pulford respectively. Farndon had two priests and there was also a church and priest recorded at Gresford. In addition to cultivated land most manors had meadowland and Dodleston, Farndon and Gresford had woodland. There were fisheries at Eaton and Farndon while Eccleston is recorded as having a boat and net; Farndon and Gresford had mills. Cheshire as a whole was the poorest and least populated of the West Mercian shires and from the record in the Domesday Book it appears that our local area largely fits that picture. Hugh Jones Councillor for Rossett Covid-19. By the time you are reading this we will be well into our period of National Lockdown, or ‘Firebreak’. We will also have some understanding of how well the local lockdown measures worked, given that it is at least three weeks after the imposition of any measures before there are any signs in the figures of consequences that result from the actions. I am focussing on what will happen after November 9th and have made it clear to those responsible that any new measures need to recognise that people living in border areas rely on services both sides of the border. I have also been working to ensure that the Wrexham Testing Centre is made permanent for the period of the pandemic. One consequence of having a local testing centre and making it easier for people to get a test is that our local infection figures will rise. At the current time the infection map is spread across the County Borough and unlike earlier in the year there are no local hotspots. However this can change at very short notice. Dropped Kerbs Williams Way. At long last the scheme to provide dropped kerbs adjacent to the bungalows on Williams Way will take place within the coming weeks. I can only apologise for the delay having first raised the issue nearly five years ago. Parking Wardens. Parking Wardens have now resumed their patrols outside the town centre and have been in Rossett. As a result, several tickets were issued to people overstaying their time limit around The Green. Tractors. I have received a number of complaints about the speed of tractors through the village and also the state of the roads after they have been on them. We all appreciate the importance of agriculture and the difficult work that farmers have, particularly in bad weather. I have asked both the Police and the Environment Department to look into specific complaints that have been raised. Local Volunteers. If you, or anyone you know, needs help or support through these difficult times there are a number of support services available. Russell Gilmartin Councillor for Marford & Hoseley Well, it’s crazy to think it’s Christmas next month! This year seems to have gone by in a bit of a blur... one minute it’s February, the next the year is coming to an end. I think it’s safe to say 2020 has been the year that kept on giving… for all the wrong reasons! Stay positive, this has been a difficult year for many of us in many ways but it will get better. Covid 19 & Local Restrictions At the time of writing this, it has just been announced that Wales will go back into lockdown - or whatever fancy name it’s now being given! Things have changed and keep changing between different areas so hopefully a national lockdown will end any confusion. I know some people feel there has been a lot of mixed messages about the local restrictions that were put in place, particularly as we are so close to the border with England, but as we are in Wales we must follow the Welsh Government guidelines. Please try to stay updated with these rules and regulations. I know that for some, another lockdown will be frustrating but we’ve done it before and the community worked well together. I’m sure we can and will again. Hedges There have a few complaints about overgrown hedges and overhanging trees over the past few weeks. Please cut back and trim any hedges or trees that are intruding onto public footpaths. In some cases, pedestrians are having to walk into the road to get passed them. Parking near The Rofft School Just a reminder for residents not to park on yellow lines near the school. I’m still getting reports of residents having their driveways blocked in the morning and afternoons, so please endeavour to park where people’s properties aren’t being obstructed. Winter Weather It’s that time of year again - we get more rain and cold weather, which in turn, helps produce those pesky potholes, as well as leaves blocking up drains. Many have already been reported to the Council but if you do notice any potholes or blocked drains, please report them to either myself or the Council. So, Halloween and Bonfire Night may be cancelled but let’s still hold out hope that Christmas won’t be. If anyone is interested, I’m willing to trade a toilet roll for a turkey!
