With everything that’s going on it feels like 2020 is galloping away from us so fast I can hardly keep up! November is normally when we start looking forward to Bonfire Night and in previous years it’s been a joy to see the stunning local organised displays that are so popular with families and children. Of course, this year is quite different with Halloween and Bonfire night being cancelled. November is also the time when we commemorate the fallen on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday which this year is on 8th November. I’m comforted to know that the Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph in London is still going ahead, but only as a Government led closed ceremony, with a much-reduced appearance by the members of the Armed Forces. Like so many things this year, the Poppy Appeal has had to adapt too and are asking the public to support them like never before. Local News Celebrating Lockdown Creativity Art fans can now enjoy a trip around Tŷ Pawb’s galleries without having to leave home thanks to a new virtual exhibition tour which is now available to view online. The Tŷ Pawb Open Exhibition features 117 works by 102 artists, all based around the central theme of creativity during lockdown. The exhibition features a huge, colourful variety of artistic mediums from print and paint to sculpture, and video. Have You Had Your Flu Jab Yet? Public Health Wales is urging anyone who is eligible to have their free flu vaccine as the largest ever national flu vaccine programme is now underway. Those eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine include people with long term health conditions, people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, children aged two to ten years old, carers, domiciliary carers and care home staff with regular client contact as well as care home residents. Also Community First responders and volunteers providing planned first aid. For this season’s flu programme, new groups have been added to the eligible list, making it the largest ever national flu programme. In addition, people aged 50 and over may also be offered a free NHS flu vaccine later in a phased approach later in the season. Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “Flu can be very serious for those who are older or who have a health condition and are more vulnerable to complications as a result of the flu. Local News Creating Beauty From Devastation! Local Penley resident, Glen Farrelly, trained at the renowned Camberwell College of Arts in London, studying for a fine arts degree in ceramics. When he graduated his work was immediately accepted into the South London Gallery which also exhibited the work of Gilbert and George, Damian Hirst and Tracy Emin. Glen went on to teach art at City of London School. The school, nestled on the bank of the Thames between St Paul’s Cathedral and Tate Modern, is where Glen would spend the next 19 years sharing his skills and honing his own ideas before taking the role as Head of Art. In 2016 he moved with his young family to the USA settling in Santa Clarita, California. Unfortunately, after only two months in their new home, the area was under threat by the biggest fire the city had seen for many years. The fast-moving fire came within ¼ mile of his home causing his family to evacuate for three days. As soon as he was able, he began walking the fire-ravaged sites and collected remnants of scorched and discarded wood. Glen concentrates on finding the beauty that remains in each piece of wood and emphasizes the new life that emerges. Each piece is carefully sculpted to show the scars left by the fire and the beauty and new life that is returning to the city. Glen has now returned to the UK and lives in Penley. He continues to make and exhibit his work whilst keeping close ties to California. Glen has always been an ambassador for environmental issues and hopes his artwork helps to raise further awareness of the effects of climate change. Hospice Launches Anniversary Gin Gin-lovers now have a new locally produced product to enjoy with proceeds going to Nightingale House Hospice. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the hospice has collaborated with The Shropshire Distillery to produce its own bespoke Nightingale House hand-crafted gin which was launched on 23rd October. The independent distillery, based in Ellesmere is known for creating its own artisan-handcrafted premium gins using traditional copper still methods. It is a limited-edition juniper led dry gin with lightly sweet citrus notes from sweet orange and a bright but subtle citrusy taste derived from lemon balm. A percentage of the sales from every bottle sold will be donated to the hospice. It costs £36.50 a bottle and can be purchased directly from the Shropshire distillery’s website: theshropshiredistillery.co.uk

A good night’s sleep If getting your eight hours of shut-eye is a constant battle, regular exercise as part of your evening routine can help relax your muscles and tire you out. The ability to rest helps you find the sleep you’ve been missing and provides a boost to your mind's health.
Training the brain Exercise not only encourages the brain to release helpful, positive chemicals, but it can increase the size of our hippocampus, the part responsible for our memory. Furthermore, more connections between our nerve cells help to protect our minds from mental illness. Boom!
A welcome distraction Exercise allows you to break any negative thought patterns that feed your low mood, giving you something else to focus on. So, when you are feeling down, just go for a walk, do a few stretches, grab a hoola hoop and give it a spin. Add your favourite tunes and you’ll be flying!
Release tension Sometimes feelings of low mood can be caused by persistent aches and pains in our muscles, bones and other areas of the body. Aerobic exercise like walking or yoga can ease the tension in these areas and decrease any discomfort, making it a great type of exercise for mental health.
Outlet for frustrations We all get angry and frustrated on occasion and finding a healthy outlet for those feelings is important to ensure they don’t affect your health or personal relationships. By releasing feel-good chemicals, exercise helps the frustration to subside. Hoop hoop hooray! (God knows we all need a bit of that right now).
Exercise and achievement Exercise is great for giving us goals to aim for. Pushing for achieving these goals gives us feelings of accomplishment and selfworth, which in turn makes us feel happier about our lives in general. But, I guess you knew that already!

Survivor’s Guide to Home Working By KELLY ELSWORTH Working from home has become the new norm and it works well for so many people. But there are so many distractions in the house! How do you ensure you are working efficiently and professionally? My name is Kelly, and I have worked from home for over 15 years. These days, however, it is not always easy to maintain a healthy work/life balance with phones, email, and video calls etc. But you can do it, with a few rules and boundaries in place: Plan your Day. It sounds basic but get dressed. Have breakfast. Schedule your day, breaks and lunch times with a timetable or day planner. Be Flexible. If you have to do the school run at 3pm, then work it into your schedule. But be sure to compensate for the time elsewhere, perhaps start early or do another half hour after dinner. Boundaries. Set your time and work area boundaries with your family. This is vital if you must use a shared space to work from, such as the dining table, so try to use a spare room or dedicated office space. Concentrate. Turn your personal social media accounts off. You can use your breaks to check things or hang the washing out but play fair with your time for your employer or business. Comfort. Do you find you have back pain when you finish your day? Make sure you have a supportive chair; the table is at the right height and adequate lighting.
Is it Legal? Home offices have the same Health and Safety rules as an office, so your employer needs to ensure your equipment is safe and tested, if need be. Check your home insurance and mortgage provider allow home working and make sure you have a written guide or contact from your employer detailing your and their expectations and liabilities. Make sure you know what you can claim back as expenses and don’t forget to do it! And finally,… Keep in Contact. It is so easy to become isolated at home. You don’t have the camaraderie you get at work with friends and colleagues, but you must take the time to keep in contact. Try a virtual coffee break with colleagues once a week– it’s an ideal time to catch up on work in a personal setting. Working from home can be a great solution for many, but it’s not for everyone. You may prefer the structure of an office with defined times – everyone is different. Make sure if you do work from home, you make it work well for you and your family.

Citizens Advice Wrexham The Coronavirus pandemic has pushed many people into debt that will take them years to get out of. Citizens Advice estimate that it would take an average person that we help with debt problems at least 30 months to pay back just their priority debts, assuming that they spent their entire disposable income on repayments each month. The figures show: • Around 250,000 people in Wales (17% of the total workforce) have already seen their hours cut, been laid off, or made redundant as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak. • Four out of 10 people (42%) have lost household income because of this crisis, with nearly one in 14 (7%) losing 80% or more of their household income. • One in four people (25%) have applied or expect to apply for benefits as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. Overall, we estimate that six million UK adults have fallen behind on at least one household bill during the pandemic. • • • • •

Shooting Star Cancer Support As ever, one of the most devastating bits of news for any family has been that one of their family members or a close friend, has been diagnosed with cancer. Over the last few decades, rapid or early diagnosis together with advanced technology and treatments now result in recovery from cancer. Such beneďŹ ts have been seen, for example, with breast, colon and some blood cancers. Our charity raised funds to build the Shooting Star Unit and have funded many projects and vital equipment. These efforts have resulted in patients being treated and supported locally. However, despite really heroic efforts of our staff, over recent years the Unit has been overstretched and waiting lists unacceptable, also patients being diverted elsewhere for therapy. The Charity is now negotiating with the Trust’s Hospital Board to raise funds for an extension to the Unit. Designs are now being considered and we desperately need to move on with this project. The Project In October 2019 a project team from the Cancer Division was set up within the Maelor Hospital. COVID-19 had slowed progress and prevented proper meetings from the March lockdown. However, in October this year, business plans are now in motion. We now await the go-ahead for fundraising. COVID-19 has and is interrupting Cancer Diagnosis and Treatments. So, it now remains urgent that the Shooting Star Unit has increased capacity to treat cancer patients as soon as is feasible. The backlog of cancer diagnosis will mean that patients diagnosed will require speedy appointments for treatments.

Lesley Griffiths MS Member of the Senedd for Wrexham I wish I could bring you all some more positive news but, unfortunately, coronavirus continues to dominate the agenda. The situation is changing frequently. Despite the promising summer, there was always concern the virus would return as we approached the winter period. Tighter restrictions were first announced for Wrexham at the beginning of October. Although the original announcement was a surprise to many, I think most will agree the subsequent weeks have demonstrated it was the right thing to do. There was an expectation coronavirus cases would rise and this has been reflected in the data. Sadly, although the local restrictions instigated in many parts of Wales helped, the virus’ acceleration meant more needed to be done. On Friday 23 October, the twoweek firebreak was introduced to help bring coronavirus under control. Expert medical and scientific advisors were unanimous that a short, sharp firebreak would give us an opportunity to reset. Without a significant reduction in transmission, it was believed the impact on hospitals and intensive care units would have been too high for the NHS to sustain. The Welsh Government wanted to ensure we came out on the other side better prepared. During the fortnight, more staff were hired to strengthen the Test Trace Protect system and the NHS focused on deploying its field hospitals. It is a difficult balancing act. As a member of the Welsh Government, we act on the latest scientific evidence and every decision is considered carefully and thoroughly. The overriding aim is to help keep people safe.
This has already been a challenging period for many businesses and I recognise the stricter restrictions created further difficulties. Throughout this pandemic, I have been supporting and updating local firms as best I can. I have regularly attended Wrexham’s Town Centre Forum and am pleased the Welsh Government has been able to offer a generous financial package to businesses. All those affected by the firebreak have been supported with a new £300m fund. The support from the Economic Resilience Fund is unique to Wales and has been critical to hundreds of Wrexham businesses, helping protect the livelihoods of many local residents. My staff and I continue to offer support to constituents and if there is anything I can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact me via the details below. 2020 has been a difficult year and we are all weary of the restrictions on our lives. Over this winter, we will all be asked to make further sacrifices to protect our loved ones, to help prevent our NHS from being overwhelmed and to keep as many businesses open and operating safely as possible. Every person must play their part to help keep Wrexham and Wales safe.

Selling Your Tech By EssentialsMAG tech contributor DAVID HUGHES “When’s the new iPhone coming out?” This is a question I get asked a lot. I’m known to be a bit of an Apple fanboy; the type who drives their family mad by watching the unveiling of the latest iPhone live from California over the dinner table (yes, they stream it live!). There are those of us who are always waiting for the next thing, ready to throw money at the richest companies in the world. What this inevitably leads to is a need to get rid of our old device, and there are plenty of ways to do this, but there are some steps you need to take before you actually sell, donate or part-exchange. Step 1: Backup Whether you are selling a phone, tablet or computer - there will be important documents, contacts, photos and music on it that you don’t want to lose. Much of this is backed-up in some way these days anyway, but it never harms to do a full back up before moving on to the second step. Step 2: Sign out The services we use on these devices often have access to just as much personal information as is held on the device itself, so it’s important that you sign out of these services, either in the application or via a browser. For example, if you use iCloud services like ‘Find my’ iPhone (or Android’s ‘Find my Device’), you should go into the settings and disable/remove the device you are selling from the service.
Step 3: Reset In order to remove the remaining information from your device, you should now reset it to factory settings. This can be done in the ‘Settings’ app of most phones and tablets. On a more modern Android device, you should also turn off the factory reset protection (FRP) and encrypt your data before resetting. Step 4: Remove SIM This one is specific to phones and some cellular enabled tablets. If your device can connect to a cellular network, it likely has a physical SIM card. You need to remove this. This is only a basic overview of the steps you should take. Obviously, each device and operating system is slightly different, and I suggest you search for instructions on the device manufacturer’s website. Also, if you are looking to swap your existing device with a new one from the same manufacturer, I would recommend visiting them in-store, as they will help you through the steps above whilst also setting up your new device. I don’t think I am alone in this wish, so it is worth bearing in mind that, once COVID restrictions have been lifted, the demand for travel will be high. And 70% of holidaymakers whose holidays were cancelled this year have already re-booked with us for next year - so this will add to the volume of demand. My advice, therefore, is to look ahead and think about your holiday for next year now: this will secure the best price and availability ahead of the rush. Gardening Tips and Advice November - Winter is on its Way Leaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase. Tender plants will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains. Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can't, it is worth wrapping plants or pots. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up.

Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds.

Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging.
3.
Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year.
4.
Prune roses to prevent wind-rock.
5.
Plant out winter bedding.
6.
Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem.
7.
Insulate outdoor containers from frost - bubblewrap works well.
8.
Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks.
9.
Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden.
10.
Use a seasonal bonďŹ re - where this is allowed - to dispose of excess debris unďŹ t for composting.

Easy Mince Pies MAKES 12 INGREDIENTS 225g cold butter, chopped 350g plain flour 100g icing sugar, plus extra for dusting 410g jar mincemeat
METHOD Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Rub the butter into the flour and icing sugar with your fingertips, or blend in a food processor, until the mixture comes together in a ball – you don’t need to add any liquid or chill it. Knead briefly, then cut into 12 equal pieces. Taking a piece of dough at a time, cut off two-thirds and press into the base and up the sides of a muffin tin hole. Repeat to make 12. Spoon the mincemeat into the pastry cases – it won’t completely fill them. Now take the 12 remaining smaller pieces of pastry. Roll each into a ball and flatten to make a disc for the mince pie lid. Add one to each pie and tuck the pastry that comes up the sides of the tin down to seal it. Or use a cookie cutter for a festive shaped pie lid. Prick the tops with a fork a few times. At this stage they will freeze for up to 6 weeks. Defrost before baking. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until pale golden. Cool in the tins for about 10 minutes, then give the pies a little twist to stop them from sticking. When cool, carefully remove from the tins. Dust with icing sugar when ready to serve, and enjoy with a cup of tea!

Hello everybody nice to be back with you all again. So, let’s go back to the 70’s TV show Crackerjack. They had a game called ‘Double or Drop’ - answer a question wrong and you would get a cabbage to carry with prizes you had won too. I’d love to have as much cabbage as I could carry now! They are so good for you as they are packed with Vitamin C and K and are also full of fibre and folic acid too. Two years ago, at a church service, I was reunited with a couple of friends from 20 years prior. During our catch-up my friend told me how her husband was suffering with severe stomach problems and was not able to sleep at night. He had been attending hospital appointments for over eight months and nobody could understand how to help him. I was excited to tell her about green cabbage, that he should eat as much cabbage as possible and definitely drink raw cabbage juice (use of a juicing machine). I told him to drink cabbage juice specifically about three times daily. I had learnt the benefits from an article I had read how people were cured of stomach ulcers and other stomach associated problems by drinking cabbage juice.
We kept in touch and he actually felt some relief after a couple of days and two weeks after his pain and discomfort had totally gone. He thanked me for curing him, but it wasn’t me it was the acid glutamine in the cabbage that did all the work. Eating fruits and vegetables has so many benefits for you, your family and friends. Cabbages can give relief if somebody is feeling constipated because of the fibre content. Expectant mums are recommended to eat cabbage also as it contains folic acid. A cabbage can be rather smelly to cook but it naturally will flush out all the toxins you have picked up from the environment during the day as it’s an alkaline food. It also helps with the anti-aging process, weight loss too and is a great immunity booster. A cabbage was given for wrong answers on Crackerjack, but to me it’s actually the right answer when it comes to your health and wellbeing. A Burning Issue By EssentialsMAG environment contributor ROB RENOUF On a global scale, we’re seeing plenty of evidence of the harm caused by burning things. Use of fossil fuels is producing global warming and damaging our health. The World Health Organisation estimates that air pollution is reducing global average life expectancy by one year and eight months. Even a small fire in our garden can have negative impacts on the environment. Bonfires are illegal in many places such as Ireland and France, but not in the UK. However, allowing the smoke to become a danger to traffic, or causing frequent nuisance, are offences and can result in a fine of up to £5,000. COVID-19 restrictions may mean queuing for longer at the household waste site, but they’re no excuse for fly-tipping or burning waste. The GOV.UK website says “you cannot get rid of household waste if it will cause pollution or harm people’s health. This includes burning it.” Burning materials such as plastic, rubber or wood that’s been painted or treated can release toxic chemicals. Even where having a fire isn’t illegal, I’d argue against it for the following reasons: Consideration for others - unless you live in the middle of nowhere, a fire will probably affect other people. Smoke can make it unpleasant (and potentially dangerous) for others to be
outside, or force them to close doors and windows. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service says that “smoke from garden waste fires produces carbon monoxide and pollutants that can irritate airways, the skin and eyes. This can cause coughing, wheezing and chest pain, particularly if it is damp and smouldering, affecting people with asthma and other respiratory diseases.” In addition to these inhalation risks, toxic particles can be deposited on the ground and plants, and can then easily enter the food chain. Wildlife - a pile of branches provides a perfect home for many creatures who could be killed or injured if it’s burnt. Hedgehogs may be the first animal that comes to mind, but amphibians such as frogs, toads and newts will often move in, as will insects. Indirect environmental impacts in addition to the air pollution resulting from a fire, it can also have indirect impacts. Tumble dryers consume lots of electricity, so line drying is one of the best things we can do to save energy. Just one person having a fire can mean dozens of other people having to resort to tumble drying.

Financial News with Hadlow Edwards The Parachute Shop You may have to bear with me - at least a few sentences on this one! Can you remember the last time you walked into a Parachute Shop? No? Me neither.
A simple question, if I may If I pulled a cheque out of my pocket and put it face down on the table in front of you - how much would the cheque have to be for to allow you to stop working (and never work again) with effect from today?
Let’s imagine we walked into one today. Lined up along the wall are a whole bunch of parachutes to choose from. The very cheapest at the left, the mid-priced ones in the middle and the best in the shop towards the right.
The answer - is a decent guide as to how much life cover you may need. I rarely lose the debate about ‘levels of cover’. Seriously two or three years ‘Death in Service’ cover or £50,000 life cover will not see young kids through school - let alone further education.
Who would look to the left and consider buying at the very budget end of the rail for this type of purchase? Not many I would suggest. For literally a ‘life or death’ purchase I think most people would buy the very best and most reliable ‘chute they could afford. Perhaps in the middle of the rail or to the right.
When something as important as protecting your family is at stake (a bit like buying a parachute I reckon) - get it right please. We help many families do just that. We also see a lot of Grandparents now helping their family by paying the premiums each year for quality cover to be put in place.
What’s the relevance/connection between parachutes and financial planning - I can hear you ask (almost)?
I fully accept that budget/affordability is understandably a key issue for many young families. But my steer is - don’t buy rubbish. Buy as close as possible to exactly what you need and improve on it when you can. Many policies offer ‘guaranteed insurability’ where you can take cover out today and increase it in time to come as your family and budget grows.
Well, something I see quite often is absolute ‘budget’ life insurance or critical illness cover advertised. Some people buy it. Often the plans offer low levels of cover and are not underwritten (assessed against your health, medical condition and lifestyle) at the outset. Critical Illness plans offering a small range of illnesses covered where you would be paid out, can be cheap. For good reason.

Legal Advice Questions & Answers By EssentialsMAG legal advice contributor CAROL McGUIRE Marital Issues during the Lockdown period Sad though it is to say, but the Lockdown has placed couples in a worse situation than ever. They are spending more time together and problems that were overlooked before the Lockdown, have risen like the Phoenix from the Ashes. What were minor irritations have magnified treble fold. Prior to the Lockdown, most people had very busy lives and because of that, those irritations were overlooked, because we didn't have time to concentrate on them. Now, with people not working or working from home, presents an entirely new scenario, the likes of which that no one has experienced before. People present in a totally different way and what may have been an extremely ‘laid back’ spouse has become the total opposite. It can even lead to physical violence as there is no other outlet. It's a very difficult position to be in and instead of hating one another more, concentration should be placed upon working things out together. Unfortunately, this doesn't always happen and bickering can lead to mental health issues, that no one would have ever thought about before. In my practice, I replaced actual face-toface contact with telephone appointments, which seems to have worked well, because it's given people time to digest the advice given and to act upon it. Mediators have also been willing to do telephone appointments too. It keeps the client safe as well as our staff.
It doesn't stop us from taking any proceedings because paperwork can be approved over the Internet. In some ways it has helped the nervous client to take charge of issues that previously would have been shunned. It's amazing as to how personalities can change and maybe will remain long after the lockdown has been lifted. So, it can have positive effects on people. The real issue is whether or not you can live with that person, knowing that he/she has a Jekyll and Hyde personality that you were never aware of before and which you are frightened of, should the current scenario continue, or indeed, replaced with another virus in the future. Separation and Divorce are of course the two options that need to be thought about, if you feel there is no turning back. Whilst Boris Johnson has urged people back to work in offices, the First Minister of Wales is adopting a more cautious strategy. The common view is that if it is an emergency situation that you need help upon, then a meeting can take place, but with all the precautions possible i.e. sanitising gel; masks; screens and such like. The point I seek to make is not to live in silence enduring something that is causing you enormous pain when solicitors are available to help, even if only by telephone.
