Editor’s Letter I’m so pleased April has arrived, and we can start to look forward to some brighter days and sunshine. It’s just like coming out of hibernation after the winter as the nights get lighter and the days get warmer, and at least we didn’t have the snow we had last year. Sorry kids, I know you don’t quite see it the way I do! I’ll be back from skiing as this lands on your mats and hopefully I won’t have any broken bones! It’s my first time too so I’m a little apprehensive as I type, to say the least. I much prefer to keep my feet on good old familiar ground, but I did a day lesson at the Chill factor in Trafford Park, Manchester, to break myself into it gently. I can’t say I feel any more comfortable on the snow than before I went, although I have to say the winter olympics did inspire me. I couldn’t believe how young the snow boarders looked! While I’ve been out driving this month, a few of the lanes have been flooded and I’ve feared it was too high to even contemplate driving through. Mind you it’s one of those situations where you don’t want to have to reverse back down a single lane country lane for quite some way, so chancing the flood is the lesser of 2 evils.

At that moment when it’s too late you wish you’d taken the sensible option and gone for the reverse option. Anyway I made it but didn’t learn my lesson and chanced it a few times, having quite a panic each time. I’m sure it wasn’t worth the stress! My mature years focus on the budget these days, not that I understand pensions, like most of us probably, but that seems to be the main point that arose this time. The only bit I can remember is that you now have more flexibility in taking your pension money out. I have a vision of a load of old age pensioners going on a mad spending spree and ending up destitute! I’m sure it’s more complicated than that and I’m sure our finance experts will explain it all to us. It’s just a good job I’m not giving financial advice, that’s all I have to say. After last month’s magazine went to print Trevalyn meadows continued to attract large numbers of wildfowl including some unusual species. 20 locally bred Mute Swans were joined by 11 Whoopers, winter visitors from Iceland, and, possibly a first for our area, a pair of Bewick‘s Swans with two cygnets. Bewick’s, the smallest of our three Swan species, are long distance migrants, each year making the return trip of nearly 6,000 miles to and from Siberia. Their main wintering grounds in the British Isles are Welney in East Anglia and the famous wildfowl sanctuary at Slimbridge where ground-breaking research was carried out by the late Sir Peter Scott and his team of fellow ornithologists who discovered, amongst other things, that each adult Bewick’s Swan has a unique bill pattern of yellow and black sufficiently distinct to enable individual recognition. In this way over the years some 500 birds have been identified and given names. The oldest bird recorded there was known as Mrs Noah who was 36 years old when last seen. At its peak in addition to the swans, the Trevalyn floods hosted 2 Black-tailed Godwits, 2 Scaup, 200+ Lapwings, some 50 Shelducks, 100 Pintails and a Peregrine falcon as well as resident Mallards and Geese.
Now winter has given way to Spring winter migrants are being replaced by summer visitors. The first singing Chiffchaff recorded in Rossett was heard in Station Road on 13 March. The first members of the Swallow family to reach the British Isles after wintering in Africa are Sandmartins. Like Swallows and House Martins they show great fidelity to traditional breeding sites. Research on Swallows indicates that most return to within 5 miles of their birthplace and in many instances to the exact spot where they hatched. Birdsong is at its peak in April. In and around Rossett more than 20 species contribute to the dawn chorus. Some songs, like that of the Woodpigeon, are rudimentary. For variety the Starling’s cheery jumble of assorted mimicry is in a league of its own but, for sheer musicality, my personal favourite is a Blackbird.

The best of Wrexham’s rural food producers, shops and restaurants are invited to be part of a new “food trail” designed to showcase the best produce in the area. A trail leaflet and website will be designed as part of the project which will celebrate and highlight the provenance of real food and drink to their customers. Jo Edwards, owner of Aballu Artisan Chocolatier & Chairperson of the Local Food Producers Forum said: “Having seen the impact that a food trail can have in other areas, I think having one
in Wrexham is a fantastic idea. We’ve got such a lot to offer, and we should be shouting it from the rooftops! Introducing a food trail, gives us the chance to promote ourselves to a wider audience and build some great relationships with other businesses. There is still a preconception of Wrexham as being industrial and not at all foodie, but there are some real quality producers, restaurants and shops, as well as some great tourist sites. Hayfever At this time of year we all look forward to the arrival of spring after the long dark days of winter. However, for some, the arrival of warmer weather brings with it the misery of hay fever, an inflammatory condition caused by grass and other pollens. Every year approximately 15-20% of the population suffer in some way and reactions vary from mild to debilitating. Incessant itching of the eyes, nose and throat, runny nose and streaming eyes are just a few of the symptoms; there may also be a feeling of tightness and wheezing in the chest. Standard treatments include anti-histamine tablets, decongestant nasal sprays and saline eye drops. These ease the misery for a short time but symptoms return when the medication is stopped. Many people are turning to homeopathy for an alternative treatment. Homeopathy can not only help with the symptoms it can also help to lessen an individual’s susceptibility to hay fever. In the long term, following a homeopathic protocol for three winters can lead to a total elimination of hay fever. However, this treatment can only be prescribed by a qualified homeopath. In the short term over the counter remedies can be tried at home and may alleviate some of the worse symptoms.
Some common remedies for hay fever: Allium Cepa: Streaming eyes & nose with frequent and severe sneezing. Throat & nose feel raw. Worse in the morning and indoors. Arsen Alb: Nose tickles violently. Sneezing that is violent and painful with a watery burning discharge, making the upper lip sore. Euphrasia: Eyes burn, itch and water constantly. Runny nose with much sneezing. Also available in tincture to be used as a soothing eye wash/bath. Pulsatilla: Copious thick bland or yellow coloured catarrh and sneezing. Relieved by open air. Sabadilla: Catarrh with constant sneezing; sensation of great rawness, stuffiness & burning in the nose. Even thinking of grass and flowers causes sneezing. Wyethia: Extreme itching of the nose, palate & throat. Many health food stores and high street chemists stock a range of homeopathic remedies. When self prescribing use either 6c or 30c potency. If there is no relief within 12 hours try another remedy or consult a qualified homeopath.

Police Advice Dear Residents Due to the time of year and the nicer weather soon to be upon us, I thought it would be a good idea to provide you with information about bicycle security. The following tips are designed to keep your bike as secure as possible and reduce the risk of theft: • Lock your bike in at least two places on the frame. • Ensure you put the lock through the wheel and frame of the bike. • Lock your bike to a permanent structure where it cannot be lifted off • If you have a removable seat, take it with you or lock it to the bike. • Use a strong, quality lock – e.g. ‘D’ locks. • Security mark your bike frame Don’t be a victim of bike theft follow the golden rules below: • Mountain bikes are expensive assets, be mindful of who may be following you home from a bike track or centre. When you get home put your bike away. • Take adequate security measures to keep a bike secure in the home/garage. • Whilst out and about, always lock your
bike up when you leave your bike even if it’s for a short time. Never leave it unlocked. • Don’t leave your bike rack on your car after use, you are advertising the fact there’s a mountain bike potentially worth stealing in your house or garage. • Consider using bike marking and taking photos of your bike. As well as ensuring that you know your bikes serial number/ crank number.

Andrew Bailey Wild weekend in Gresford
With colleagues from environmental group IMAGE, I helped to create a new flower bed at Burton Rise on the “Wild Weekend” of 22-23rd March in order to attract pollinators such as butterflies and bees. We also took the opportunity to refresh some of the tubs and position them together. Let me know what you think of the new arrangement. A number of tubs need serious structural work or replacing, and a thought struck us. If anyone would like to purchase a display in memory of a loved one we could mark it with a discrete plaque and this will help with our floral efforts. Please contact me if interested.

The New Youth Service
The youth service was reorganised last year following a review that took place in 20102011, before I regained the Gresford seat. As the new arrangements have been going for around a school year, a scrutiny committee is due to review it on Thursday 15th May. If you are a service-user or have young people in your family who would like to use the service, I would be most pleased to hear your views.

In 1910, the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company was set up at Filton, Bristol, becoming the Bristol Aeroplane Company in 1920. Since then a stream of significant aircraft have been built there- some names spring to mind such as the Bristol Fighter of the First World War; the Bristol Bulldog fighter between the wars, and the Bristol Blenheim, Beaufort and Beaufighter of the second World War, during which some 14,000 aircraft were built. Then in 1949 came the huge Bristol Brabazon air liner, which alas was superseded by such jet airliners as the De Havilland Comet and the Boeing 707 before it was introduced. In 1960, the Bristol Aeroplane
Company and other aircraft manufacturers merged to become the British Aircraft Corporation, now British Aerospace. In 1946, the company also diversified into car production having been awarded the remains of B.M.W. by the War Reparations Board, and the first Bristol car - the 400 was modelled on the lines of the very successful pre-war B.M.W. 328, and its German designer, Dr. Fielder, was persuaded to join the new company and to develop its engine into what became the famous Bristol 2- litre, favoured by many racing cars of the times, such as the Cooper Bristols.

Car shape and Bristol fashion Racing driver Anthony Crook, who sadly died in January at the age of 93, drove many of these Bristol engined racing cars, giving the likes of Mike Hawthorn, Roy Salvadori and Stirling Moss a run for their money. Indeed, it was in 1955 racing against Moss at Goodwood that his car skidded on oil and crashed into Stirling’s car, causing Tony to be admitted to hospital with his injuries, and to retire from racing. Then he founded Anthony Crook Motors of Kensington, London, where he was sole concessionaire for that delectable range of Bristol cars, becoming a director of the company in 1960 under the Chairmanship of Sir George White, and taking it over completely in 1973.
I went to interview him in 1970 and he loaned me his Bristol 411 test car with the Reg. No. 100 MPH. Powered by a 6.3 litre Chrysler V-8 engine mated to a three speed automatic transmission, it could reach 50 M.P.H. in 5.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 143 M.P.H. It cost £6,997, though good ones sell for around £50,000 today! Mr. Jimmie McAlpine of Gerwyn Hall had two of them in the ‘70s, though the last one I have seen in this area was at Phil Smith’s Garage in Marchwiel around 12 months ago. It was owned by classic car enthusiast Stuart Orr of Wrexham who has owned five Bristol cars, the latter one now in Austria. It’s always worth a look as you pass Marchwiel Garage as Phil often seems to have something interesting parked on the forecourt!

north wales armed forces day The aim of the day is to raise awareness of the armed forces and the sacrifices they and their families make in their service to our country.Confirmed so far is a Griffin Helicopter which will be on Llwyn Isaf Green and a Fly Past by a Spitfire. Planned entertainment will take the form of circus performers, choirs, singers and bands! There will also be a military village with a climbing wall and military vehicles and veteran associations will be on hand to offer advice and help to former and serving armed forces personnel. There will be a
parade by representatives of the three armed forces from the Barracks starting at 11.30 am which will be led by the band of the Royal Welsh and will include cadets and veterans in addition to serving armed forces personnel. The parade will march into town and form up on Llwyn Isaf Green where a Drumhead service will take place. After the formal service and silence everyone will be invited to enjoy the entertainment available on the green and Queen’s Square. Everyone is invited to share in this year’s North Wales celebration of our armed forces.

Lamb Chops with Balsamic Reduction What you need 3/4 teaspoon dried rosemary 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme salt and pepper to taste 4 lamb chops (3/4 inch thick) 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 cup minced shallots 1/3 cup aged balsamic vinegar 3/4 cup chicken broth 1 tablespoon butter
How you do it In a small bowl or cup, mix together the rosemary, basil, thyme, salt and pepper. Rub this mixture onto the lamb chops on both sides. Place them on a plate, cover and set aside for 15 minutes to absorb the flavors. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place lamb chops in the skillet, and cook for about 3 1/2 minutes per side for medium rare, or continue to cook to your desired doneness. Remove from the skillet, and keep warm on a serving platter. Add shallots to the skillet, and cook for a few minutes, just until browned. Stir in vinegar, scraping any bits of lamb from the bottom of the skillet, then stir in the chicken broth. Continue to cook and stir over mediumhigh heat for about 5 minutes, until the sauce has reduced by half. If you don’t, the sauce will be runny and not good. Remove from heat, and stir in the butter. Pour over the lamb chops, and serve.

Guides’ Planting in Maes-y-Pant Woods
There was an excellent turnout from the 1st Marford Guides last month, when they planted over 200 traditional British bluebell bulbs in a glade near the entrance. They then went on to the field to sow wild flower seeds, donated by the Guides, in the twelve beds that had been prepared by volunteers.
Marford Community Centre
Although the legal documents for the formal lease of the Community Centre to the community group MCC may not be signed for a couple of months yet, real progress has been made. The Council has asked the group to take over the day-to-day running of the centre from April. I know that all the users of Marford’s community hall will give the new organisation their full support. It is now up to us to ensure that it is as fully booked as possible in the future.
Maes-Y-Pant
At the first meeting of the Friends of Maes-yPant held on 1st April at Marford Community Centre, the supporters of our Community Woodland in the village heard the plans for its future development. More than meets the eye?
In the recent Budget statement the Chancellor announced far reaching reforms of pensions and savings. A lot has already been written on the subject - but, is there more to it than meets the eye? First, a very short recap of the talking points on the topics above; ISA changes - nice and simple. With effect from 1 July, there will be one new limit for all adults of £15,000 for the 14/15 tax year that you can use to shelter any combination of cash or stocks and shares for the future. The Junior ISA (and Child Trust Fund) limit will increase to £4000 as at 1 July for the under 18’s.
ISA flexibility also improved. You can now (as always) switch Cash ISA into investment ISA - but the Chancellor announced that you will now be able to also switch the other way. That’s helpful when interest rates are very modest for savers. Pension changes - some immediate changes were announced and a lot of proposals were made for the Government to consider further for 2015. In short, most of the changes were about access and again flexibility. For example, if you have total pension funds worth less than £30,000 new rules come into force allowing easier access. The consultation for 2015 will consider the detail of extending these rules to much larger funds as well. An alternative to the traditional annuity approach - where at some point you had to use most of your pension pot to take an income - is on the cards, and has been largely positively welcomed.
So, back to today’s title - is there more to this than meets the eye? Most of this budget appears to say - ‘look after yourselves’. The improved flexibility and particularly the easier access perhaps comes with a good degree of extra responsibility. This government, and the ones to come, simply know that pension reforms just have to happen. The current state system alone will not support our younger audience - who might one day be ‘retired’ for 30 years or more. The encouragement to build a pot of funds (pension funds, ISA funds, savings etc) has never been greater. With this comes other opportunities. For example, the chance to gift to younger generations. Junior ISAs and pension contributions for children and grandchildren (tax relief for kids - how good is that?) will surely see a big increase. Savers and particularly retired savers perhaps without mortgages have been battered by 5 years of very modest interest rates. Well at least the new ISA limit helps (pretty much double the limit of only 6 years ago). The message here is simple. Use it or lose it. The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. An investment in a Stocks and Shares ISA does not provide the security of capital associated with a Cash ISA. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances.

Gardening Tips
Taking the lawn into your own hands Mow lawns when necessary - whenever the grass is growing - the aim is to maintain a constant height throughout the year. Add the clippings to the compost heap in thin layers (too much grass all at once is likely to be very wet and poorly aerated, resulting in smelly slime rather than compost). Use a half-moon edging iron or spade to create a 7.5cm (3in) ‘gutter’ around the lawn edge. This will prevent grass creeping from the lawn into borders. Sowing new lawns or over-seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April to early May. If the soil is very wet or cold germination will be poor, so delay until the weather improves. Prepare the ground for sowing, by cultivating, levelling and lightly firming beforehand.
Do not walk over or mow newly sown grass until it has reached a height of 5-7.5cm (23in), and then only give it a light trim at the highest setting. Apply a high nitrogen spring lawn fertiliser at the beginning of the month to encourage good, strong growth. If moss is a problem choose a combined fertiliser and mosskiller. April is the best month to apply lawn weedkiller. Lightly rake lawns with a spring-tine rake to remove old plant debris. This can also be done to rake out dead moss a couple of weeks after applying a chemical moss killer. Repair bumps and hollows by peeling back the turf, removing or adding soil, and then replacing the turf. It is still a good time to sow a wildflower meadow.

Budget 2014
George Osborne presented his Budget on 19 March 2014 against the backdrop of economic recovery, rising property values and increasing wage rates. Even so, the Chancellor continued with austerity measures in a bid to ensure that the economic recovery is sustainable. Our summary outlines the changes happening in the coming weeks and months for individuals and small business owners.
INDIVIDUALS
Personal Tax Allowance There was good news in that the personal allowance, which has risen to £10,000 this April, will increase further in April 2015 to £10,500. A transferable married couples’ allowance of £1,050 will also help basic rate taxpayers from 6 April 2015.
Savings
This was definitely a Budget to encourage saving: • ISA threshold rises to £15,000 from £11,520 from 1 July 2014 and all of the money can be invested in cash • Maximum that can be invested in Premium Bonds rises from £30,000 to £40,000 on 1 June 2014 and to £50,000 in tax year 2015-16. There will also be one additional tax free prizes at the maximum level of £1 million awarded each month from August 2014. • Two fixed rate Pensioner Savings Bonds will be launched in January 2015 to help people aged 65 and over who have seen their incomes cut by low interest rates.
Pensions
From April 2015, savers will be given total freedom over how they withdraw pension money. In the meantime, temporary measures will be put in place to ease the strain on those seeking a retirement income. The temporary measures already in place include: • The total pension savings which can be taken as a lump sum will increase from £18,000 to £30,000. • The maximum size of a small pension pot which can be taken as a lump sum (regardless of total pension wealth) will increase from £2,000 to £10,000 • The number of personal pots that can be taken under these small pot rules will increase from two to three. • A person who wishes to take their pension as “draw-down” instead of buying an annuity will now need £12,000 of other income in retirement, rather than £20,000 previously and • The capped drawdown withdrawal limit will increase from 120% to 150% of an equivalent annuity.
SMALL BUSINESSES
Employers and Youth Employment The Government has taken a number of steps to reduce the cost of employing staff and encourage them to employ young people: • Apprenticeship grants for small businesses have been extended

Employers with employees under 21 will no longer be required to pay Class 1 National Insurance contribution (NIC) up to the upper earning limit for those employees and From April 2014 an allowance of £2,000 per year is available for businesses and charities to offset against the cost of employer’s class 1 national insurance contributions.
Annual Investment Allowance
Businesses looking to invest have been given a boost. The Annual Investment Allowance, which enables firms to invest in new plant and machinery and receive 100% tax relief, will now be available until 2015 with the maximum businesses can deduct from taxable profits raised to £500,000 Research and Development (R&D). Companies can claim enhanced deductions for expenditure on R&D projects .
VAT
From 1 April 2014 the turnover threshold, which determines whether a person must be registered for VAT, was increased from £79,000 to £81,000.

Gresford Fencer George Morris fights his way to success Gresford Fencer George Morris (15) is making his name known in the fencing world by having a very successful season. His total dedication to training and development over the last five years has brought success both in regional, national and international competitions. Over this short period of time George has been crowned Leon Paul Junior Series winner, Elite Epee series winner and Welsh Youth champion. He has captained the Welsh male epee team in the Winton Cadet to 2nd place, and the Welsh epee team to 3rd place in the UK school games along with a bronze medal in the individual event.
This season because of excellent results in cadet (under 17) competitions has seen selection for the GBR squad to fence in Bonn, Copenhagen and Bratislava, his most recent success was the British Cadet championships at East London University in February, where George finished this major competition with a gold medal, trophy and ceremony sword, but above all the title of “GB Epee male Cadet Champion�. George and his team are already planning the next series of competitions in Britain and Europe building on his training which also includes rugby and athletics to bring further success to Britain, Wales and Gresford.

Recreational Newsdesk There is no doubting the value of sharing news through this great Essential magazine and it is pleasing to report following recent articles, plans for a Gresford Village Festival in August are starting to take shape. The man focus of the festival is to commemorate three separate and unique areas of remembrance. They are the celebration of 65 years since the formation of Gresford Trust, to show respect to those who perished in the Gresford Colliery disaster 80 years ago and additionally recognise that this year will mark 100 years since the start of the First World War. A launch meeting was held in late March and over 14 of the local interest groups such as the cricket, football, schools, bowls etc have registered their support but there is still plenty of time to be involved. Further details can be obtained from me by calling me on 07525-824-679. The whole project is being masterminded by a sub-committee reporting into the Village Trust but new members will be warmly welcomed. On the subject of The Trust, they will be holding their AGM at The Gresford Memorial Hall on Thursday 8th May 2014. The Trust elects 12 village folk who are residents of Gresford, Marford and Hoseley as Trustees at this meeting to manage the Memorial Hall and surrounding grounds. Being a Trustee gives you the opportunity to have an input into the management and development of this great village asset. This is a Registered Charity run entirely by volunteers. Please come and join us and put something back
into the village we live in. It has been interesting to observe that the Trust Hall is now available to book for Wedding Receptions and the booking diary is already starting to fill up – with the average cost of a wedding being in the region of £15,000£20,000 this could well suite those looking to work on a smaller budget. We have several thriving organisations who are members of the Trust and worthy of being singled out for praise this month are Marford and Gresford Albion football club. Their Under 14 side have progressed to the Final of the Wrexham and District Youth League Cup and will meet Penycae. It will be played at the Wrexham Racecourse on Saturday 26th April. The team managed by Mark Postle are also enjoying league success and are still in with a shout of lifting the title. The Under 12 and Under 16 sides are also on the verge of picking up some silverware in May and are still involved in the latter stages of the their supplementary cup competitions. It was also great to hear bout the recent expedition of Gresford Brownies who have been on a County sleepover in Llangollen together with 200 Brownies from across North Wales and shortly they are holding a sleepover in Wrexham Museum. Talking of celebrations, the Brownie movement is also 100 years old and in forthcoming editions we will share details of their birthday celebrations. They are also looking for the oldest person living in the area to come along and be their guest of honour. Do you know anyone ??.

The Mayor of Wrexham welcomed some very special four-legged friends to the Guildhall recently. Three Guide Dogs and volunteers from Guide Dogs Cymru were invited to the Mayor’s Parlour to receive a personal donation of £500 from Cllr I David Bithell MBE, and his wife and Mayoress, Virginia. The undoubted star of the show was 12-week-old Nutmeg, a black Labrador puppy with bundles of energy! Cllr Bithell said: “There are over 4,700 guide dog owners in the UK and they offer a lifeline for blind and partially sighted people. As well as providing a safe and effective way for people to get about independently and confidently, Guide dogs are extremely loyal and offer companionship.
“Guide Dogs Cymru is a charity that’s very close to mine and the Mayoress’ heart and it was a pleasure to welcome everybody to the Guildhall, including little Nutmeg.” The charity provides all essential equipment and training for people who are in need of a guide dog. Guide Dogs Cymru can also cover the cost of vet bills and dog food if people wish. Alison Hourihane, Community Fundraiser for Guide Dogs Cymru, said: “Guide dogs are making a huge difference to the lives of blind and partially sighted people right here in Wrexham, and this generous donation will help many more to regain their independence. Our thanks are due to the volunteers of RECAP who over the winter months have planted thousands of daffodil bulbs that make our village look to attractive in the spring. Please remember they are for the benefit of the whole community and not a source of colour to take home.
Budget Cuts
Sadly two schemes for Rossett have had to be put on hold due to the current financial situation. The scheme to improve parking in Trevalyn Hall View and the resurfacing of Chester Road through Lavister. In the current climate the Council has been forced to prioritise the roads in the worst condition in the County Borough and, as bad as it is, Chester Road does not come anywhere near the top. Looking ahead for next year the total budget for the North area of the County Borough is just £100,000. I will keep monitoring the situation and ensure that these schemes are not forgotten. However I have to be honest and say we will probably have to wait a couple of years at the earliest.
Gresford Library
The residents of Gresford and Marford have joined together to form a Community Trust to run the library from April 1st. We wish them ever success and I hope that as a community we can make use of their fascilities.

I was very pleased with the excellent turnout at the recent public meeting. Officers from the Council answered numerous questions and gave some reassurance. One of the main concerns was to ensure that the proposed scheme would not merely move the problem elsewhere. Officers gave assurances that they had all the necessary powers to protect peoples property and to intervene in the event of a potential flood threat.

I attended the annual Wrexham Sports Award and was delighted to see St Peter’s School listed in 4 categories. Although not winning they were unique amongst all the primary schools in the County Borough in their nominations for awards. Well done to Staff, Pupils and Parents.

West Highland Ramblings Hi Readers, Following on from my last article I regret to say that my ambition to appear on The Voice has come to nothing and I didn’t even get an audition! I cannot imagine why. My friend Striker has given me a good idea however when he said that I had got the right sort of face for radio and that I should apply for a walk on part on The Archers so I think I might have a go! Life around Rossett has been quite busy for me recently and as I write this I am having a break looking after my Auntie Avril in Chester. She really is very good to me and I get away with all sorts of things that I would never get away with at home. My favourite trick is to get up in the early hours of the morning and to make my way onto the bed in the spare room where I luxuriate in the utmost of comfort. I find the soft furnishings there particularly to my liking... to start with she used to try and move me on however once I started growling and snarling she seems to just leave me be! I am sure that she realises that I am really doing her a favour by using this under utilised part of her property. Just hope she doesnt
recount the details to Himself when he collects me otherwise I might be in severe trouble again! Next weekends activities will see me taking part in the litter pick around Rossett again so hope that a number of my regular readers may be on hand to help me out. I do wish that people would be a bit more considerate before dropping litter as it would make the village a more attractive place for all of us inhabitants.... canine and human!! You be not surprised to hear that I am also planning a camping trip again once the weather improves slightly. I have been considering being a bit more adventurous in the coming season and looking a bit further afield for a change. I am reliably informed however that the routes to Everest are becoming increasingly congested so my thoughts have, more sensibly returned to home and naturally my beloved homeland north of the border...... S Tobacco seized in W NE
town centre swoop
In a joint operation Wrexham Trading Standards and North Wales Police have today recovered illegal tobacco with a street value of £3500. Around 16,500 cigarettes and enough hand rolling tobacco to make 3500 roll ups was seized from a private house and from a convenience store in the town centre. The operation was supported by specialist “tobacco” sniffer dogs which helped to locate hidden tobacco. Investigations are ongoing. Smoking is the biggest single cause of premature death in Wales and the UK with 100,000 people dying every year UK wide. Smoking related disease kills more than the next 6 most common causes of early death put together. Illegal tobacco contributes to this problem because it is cheap and easily available in some parts of the community. It threatens the health of children as dealers in illegal tobacco
disregard the legal age limit and sell single cigarettes which is also illegal. This makes it far easier for new child smokers to be recruited. Illegal tobacco also makes it harder for smokers who want to quit because they are tempted by cheap, easily available tobacco. Councillor David Griffiths said: “It is refreshing to see genuine partnership working between North Wales Police and Wrexham Council’s Trading Standards Service leading to such an excellent result. The impact of illegal tobacco in our community cannot be underestimated. It damages health, threatens the wellbeing of our children and has a detrimental impact on legitimate local business who lose trade to illegal sellers. The money lost through unpaid duty is money that could have been spent on schools, hospitals and in our communities. We have taken decisive action on this in the past and this latest result sends a clear message to those that deal in illegal tobacco.”

Hospice Fund Raising Event The newly formed local group - Friends of the Hospice – held a Spring Coffee Morning in Pulford Hall in March. Kay McDonald organised the event which was a great success with a Spring theme. Margaret Hollings, senior fund raiser at Nightingale House, gave an account of her trek to Base Camp Everest, during which she raised well over £4.000 for the hospice. The morning realised a sum of £550 for the work of the hospice which now needs £7,200 a day just to keep it in operation. We hope to have another fund raising event in the autumn.
Largest ever illicit alcohol haul seized in Wales A man from Cardiff has been arrested after HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) seized over 169,000 litres of illicit alcohol, in what is believed to be the largest ever seizure of its kind in Wales. It is estimated that the wine, beer and spirits are worth £303,000 in lost duty and taxes. HMRC officers searched an industrial unit in a business park in Cardiff on Tuesday (18 March) where they discovered enough illicit alcohol to fill over eight 40ft containers. The alcohol was packed onto pallets, which HMRC suspects were ready to be distributed throughout South Wales. Colin Spinks, Assistant Director, Criminal Investigation, HMRC, said: “This seizure has prevented nearly 170,000 litres of illicit alcohol entering the legitimate market, helping to protect honest businesses whose livelihoods are threatened by this unregulated activity. “We are committed to stopping this criminal activity that costs the taxpayer around £1.2 billion in unpaid revenue each year and I would urge anyone with any information on the sale of illegal alcohol to contact us on the Customs’ Hotline on 0800 59 5000.” The man has been released on bail and investigations are continuing. © HMRC
