Importance of accountability
I have been tasked with writing this 1000 word essay on the importance of accountability of sensitive items within the military. The reason I have been assigned to do this task is due to my failure of being attentive and securing my weapon and having it with me at all time. I failed by leaving my M9 Berretta at home in my safe before I left in support of the Boston Marathon. I was told by certain individuals to leave it at home, but I failed as an NCO to ask my section leader on how to properly secure my weapon. I did what I thought was best and left it to at home limit the amount of time I traveled with it. If you do the same as an officer, you won't get the same slap on the wrists as a punishment. Your career is over. You may as well start looking around for a new job and hope you don't get a bad discharge. So we check our sensitive items religiously. Normally I check to see if I have my sensitive equipment with me thru out the day or we do a check at the end of each exercise to make sure each one of us on our team is not missing valuable equipment. Most of the times our gear is either on your person, or locked up somewhere secure. Accountability and personal responsibility for your equipment is something the military takes so seriously it's not even funny. Because if there's a fight, and you don't have your weapon, then you're a huge liability to everyone. You also can't be trusted to do certain thing due to fact of not being able to hand the responsibility. It is very important to know that my action don't affect me but everyone around me. I now know that because my failure I will be always sure to get my proper information from senior leaders before making a decision or do my research more extensively. I don't want to be a liability but an asset that everyone can rely on to get task or mission done, in a time and correct manner. I won't make the mistakes like leaving my sensitive equipment at home or unsecure. I will also come to my section leaders first in the event I have a serious question. This essay I am going to write is about the importance of accountability in the army, and as to how it affect the units mission. First off by definition "Accountability is important in the military because soldiers are often times required to perform extremely challenging duties and services. Without accountability, a soldier cannot be expected to meet these high demands and expectations". This is really important because soldiers will always be coming to you for advice, guidance and almost everything they can not do alone. NCO's are the backbone of the military, they relay information from the top of the channels all the way to the bottom. The NCO mindset comes from a lot of honest hard work and working your way up from the bottom, which is why the NCO's should know most about accountability, and also because they need to have accountability of not only themselves but that of others that are under them. If one domino falls then most of the time they will all fall. so in other words if one person messes up then it could mess up everyone. In some missions this is very bad because if you are in Afghanistan or Iraq then you need to have accountability so that everyone gets home safe and unharmed. I also was a friendly, likeable guy. People weren't afraid of me or intimidated, and I respected their homes and was responsible enough to clean my work area before I headed out. To this day, there are people who want me to go work for them once my time is up in the Army. My bosses back then, as well as my customers, knew they could put me in hard working conditions and count on me to get things done. I worked in boiler rooms, on telephone poles and in cramped crawlspaces. They knew I was dedicated and responsible enough to get done anything that I had to. They also trusted me to be accountable in that when I had to go into someone's house and start drilling holes in walls, or digging trenches, that I wouldn't mess something up or punch a bunch of holes we didn't need. Personal Responsibility To be successful in college one must be personally responsible for their actions. Personal responsibility is having integrity, and taking accountability for his or her actions. Doing the right thing and making ethical choices will demonstrate being personally responsible and will result in a successful college experience.

By organizing I can set the steps in each category, short, intermediate, and long term, with each step leading toward my ultimate long termgoal. After all isn 't that what we all want, to set ourselves up to reach the ultimate long term goal. Once I have organized my goals, I will then prioritize them. I will rank all of my goals in the order in which I want to accomplish them. I will start with the most immediate goal first and work my way to my ultimate goal. For example, the most immediate goal for me is to obtain my degree. My next goal would be to retire from the Marine Corps once I have twenty years of service. My ultimate goal might be to retire by the time I am fifty five and move to a tropical area, whatever the goal is I will set myself up to reach it. By prioritizing my goals, my decision making will be made very easy based on the order in which I want to reach all of the goals that I have set. Next I will accept the responsibility of completing all of my assignments in a timely manner, which will enable me to reach one of my goals. Once the first goal is met then off to the next. By being personally responsibility and making the best decisions for me, I will ultimately reach the goals that I have set for myself.
In concluding, personal responsibility to me is being true to yourself and sticking to your morals. Being accountable for your actions
