5K event, and Earth Day at Highrock Park. Have a look at our full event schedule in the following pages. Welcome to the Winter/Spring 2015 edition of our Program and Event Guide. Please use the guide to find out more about our high quality programming and firstclass parks and facilities. We are so fortunate that we have so many opportunities for leisure and recreation in Esquimalt. Sunny outside? Why not head down to Saxe Point Park for the stunning views? Rain on the horizon? Maybe this is the time to work on targeted fitness at the Esquimalt Recreation Centre. Feeling adventurous? Maybe a self-guided walking tour of all that Esquimalt has to offer is just the thing. Feel the need for self-improvement? Maybe learning how to play an instrument or painting in watercolour is just the thing. I could go on, but the bottom line is, we’ve got it all right here in Esquimalt. Have you noticed the new playground equipment? Thanks for your patience while crews recently installed modern playground equipment in four of our parks: Lugrin, Paradise, Memorial and Esquimalt Gorge Park. I’m sure families will enjoy this addition for many years to come. We continue to be event-central here in Esquimalt. I know that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the Arts Festival, Sculpture Splash and, of course the Esquimalt Rib Fest this past summer. You can look forward to more festive celebrations this winter and spring, including the Celebration of Lights, New Year’s Day Levee, our popular

As I walk throughout the community I see our parks staff working steadily on keeping our parks and greenways beautiful for residents and visitors. The result of their work is evident wherever you turn, and will be showcased on upcoming episodes of CHEK TV’s Trend, a home and lifestyle television program featuring a profile on the Township. With its recent upgrades, the Archie Sports Centre is becoming a focal point for community events and announcements: we recently announced the 2017 Junior National Curling Championships coming to Esquimalt and welcomed the Tour de Rock at the beautiful plaza area at the facility entrance. Coming to Archie Browning in April 2016 is the Cyclone Taylor Cup, B.C.’S Junior “B” championship. Circle April 7 to 10 on your calendar. The way that we deliver event and program announcements also improves every month, as staff continue to use innovative ways to get the message out using social media and other internet-based tools. On behalf of Council I encourage everyone to take advantage of the wealth of opportunities available through our Parks and Recreation Department. Enjoy all that winter and spring have to offer. Sincerely,

Yarrows Shipbuilding Crew, c. 1917-1918

PHONE: 250-412-8540 EMAIL: gregory.evans@esquimalt.ca WEBSITE: esquimalt.ca/Main/archives.htm HOURS: Monday-Friday 9:00am-12:00pm Esquimalt has long been associated with ship building and repair. The first shipyard, the Esquimalt Marine Railway Company, was established by William Fitzherbert Bullen and partners in Lang Cove in 1893. In 1914, Sir Alfred Yarrow purchased the shipyard and the long association with Yarrows began. During the Second World War, production hit a high point. Employing as many as 3,500 workers, Yarrows produced 27 ships for the Royal Canadian Navy (including seventeen frigates) and repaired another 3,000 vessels. While Yarrows itself is gone, ship building and repair continue today through other companies, contributing to the economic vibrancy of Esquimalt. The Archives has information on shipbuilding. We are dedicated to preserving this history and all aspects of Esquimalt’s heritage and you can help. If you have material that could help us tell the shipbuilding story or other stories of our history, please let us know. Did you know the Archives can help you research your family, your house, your neighbourhood and many other subjects of interest?
