WHO WE ARE: The Esquimalt Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) is an independent nonprofit, charitable organization that supports the military community. The MFRC is here to support the unique parts of the military lifestyle.

This includes work-related separations, joining a new community, and providing social and mental wellness services so that families can stay well and military members can focus on their mission.

WHO WE ARE: Personnel Support Programs (PSP) in CFB Esquimalt is a dynamic organization encompassing a wide spectrum of responsibilities: Fitness, Sports, Recreation, Health Promotion, Sponsorship and Donation and Lookout Newspaper and Publishing House. It’s primary responsibilities are to “Serve those who Serve” by defining, assessing and providing fitness and sport’s needs, recreational needs, internal communication, health, well-being and overall quality of life for the military community.

Registration & Cancellation

Registration Information

If you cancel

Registration for programs and/or services is important as we strive to provide quality programming. Registration helps us determine the number of participants to prepare for. Registration is on a firstcome first-served basis and, at times programs fill up, so register early. Programs/Events that have a fee attached to them require payment at the time of registration. Payment can be made by cash, debit or credit card (during normal business hours and/or online at www. cafconnection.ca/esquimalt).

MFRC programs: Full refunds will be processed by contacting the MFRC at 250-363-2640 a minimum of 3 days prior to the program start date.

PSP programs: Full refunds will be processed by contacting PSP at 250-363-1009 a minimum 48 hours’ notice prior to the program start date. Please note cancellations after the required dates will be subject to approval and subject to an administrative fee. Once a program has started refunds will not be provided. Refunds regarding camps please see Camps section on Page 23 of the guide.

In the event of a medical/emergency circumstance prorated refunds may be granted for programs with multiple sessions (ie; workshop series).

Cancellation Policy If we cancel Full refunds are issued when the MFRC/ PSP cancels a program. Every effort is made to cancel courses in a timely manner (3-7 days prior to start date).

Refund Process MFRC programs: If paid by credit card, the money is refunded back to your card. If paid with a debit card at the Signal Hill location, the amount can be refunded back to your debit card. If paid by cash or debit card at the CPAC location, a cheque will be issued. Please allow 2 weeks for processing.

PSP programs: All refunds will be given back to the individual by the method they paid. If the payment was completed by cash we are able to refund directly to a debit card or can request a cheque.

Our centralized location allows us to offer a large range of rental opportunities, from structured birthday parties to large conferences and weddings.

Building 100, Naden Across the street from the Naden Athletic Centre is the Wurtele Arena available to both military and civilian members for skating, hockey, and other activities.

Preschool The MFRC’s ECE certified Educators provide fun and creative opportunities for your child! Parent participation is required for field trips. Classes are available at the Colwood Pacific Activity Centre. The 2017-2018 academic year continues until June 16. Some spaces may still be available. Please call to inquire about our 2 or 3 day a week classes that can help your child to learn through play. All 2018-19 classes require a minimum of 7 students by August 7, 2018 and have a maximum of 10 students. Please note the pre-registration for the 2018-2019 preschool will be held on Wednesday May 9 at CPAC. “Welcoming Your Baby” Box Expectant military parents can receive a free “Welcoming Your Baby” box from the Military Family Resource Centre. Each box comes with a mattress and the box can be used as a bed for use by newborns.

You will also receive samples of diapers, wipes, and other freebies.

The MFRC has included a developmental toy, tips on parenting in the military lifestyle, an emergency child care plan, and information on programs, activities, breastfeeding and safe sleeping. Visit www.esquimaltmfrc.com/welcoming-baby-box for the registration process.

Deployment Childcare during Deployment Programming Finding child care while a military member is away can be a challenge.

Free on-site child care is available to deployment program participants if the military member is deployed or if they are dealing with frequent interval separations. It is also available if the military member is attending a deployment workshop with their partner. Requests must be made at least seven days in advance by calling the MFRC at 250-363-2640. Parents should provide a healthy snack and drink for their child.

CAMPS Top Chef Camp (9-13 Years) This week will give your children the opportunity to cook away the day.

Each day will be filled with basic knowledge surrounding cooking and baking. This small group will cook everything from dessert, to hot meals to snacks they can eat on the go. Children’s Services Out of School Care Located in Belmont Park in Colwood, the MFRC provides Before and After School Care for children from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Drop-off and pick-up is available at École John Stubbs Elementary School. Children attending Crystal View Elementary or Victor Brodeur can also attend, if bus arrangements have been made. The program runs 6:30am to 5:30pm during school days.

Keeping your child safe online It's a different world for children growing up today. From the minute they're born, they're exposed to a digital world that will inevitably be their way of life – where plans are made via social networking sites, conversations are had over chat and text, and movies, games, music and TV shows are streamed at any time over the Internet.

And while it's also a wonderful educational tool, it can be a place where tough lessons are learned if children have unlimited, unsupervised access to things they may not fully understand.

The following list can help you keep your children safe when they use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, as well as mobile devices: Make sure the protection features of websites and software your children use are activated. There are tools available through your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to help you manage your children's online

experience (i.e. appropriate Websites, amount of time spent online, who can and cannot contact them).

It might also include other security features, such as pop-up ad blockers.

Get to know the online environments your children use and teach them how to deal with inappropriate material.

Talk to them about the implications of posting inappropriate pictures, saying disparaging things about other people and anything else that could damage a reputation or ruin a friendship.

Remind them that the Internet is a public space. Things they do and say now on social networking sites could have implications down the road when they're looking for summer employment (employers often search personal profiles for information about candidates).

Stay in the know about the latest ways children are communicating and what they're up to when they're at friends' houses.

Keep an eye on the sites they're visiting by keeping the computer in a common area like the kitchen.

Talk to other parents about their children's online privileges and what works for them.

Educate them about the risks of webcam use with people you or your children don't know. Video that's broadcast over the Internet is permanently out there and can be saved by anyone for later viewing or distribution. If your computer has been hacked, another user could remotely control your webcam, so if you have an external camera, unplug it or cover your camera when it's not in use.

If your child is using live text and voice chats for online games, warn them not to give personal information to a stranger.

Be careful about what you post about your children or activities related to them like the location of their school, or where you or they are volunteering.

Childcare during Deployment Programming Finding child care while a military member is away can be a challenge. Free on-site child care is available to deployment program participants if the military member is deployed or if they are dealing with frequent interval separations. It is also available if the military member is attending a deployment workshop with their partner. Requests must be made at least seven days in advance by calling the MFRC at 250-363-2640.

Parents should provide a healthy snack and drink for their child.

Get the latest information and updates about your loved one’s deployment, participate in social activities, and get mutual support from others who are going through the same experience. This program is designed specifically for the Canadian Forces and for personnel in leadership positions (MS and above). The course is designed to assist leaders to promote an addiction free culture in their workplace.

New director at helm of Esquimalt MFRC Jackie Carlé The Esquimalt Military Family Resource Centre’s (MFRC) search for a new executive director is complete.

Jackie Carlé is the new executive director at the centre. She had been acting as interim executive director for the organization since June of 2017 and was selected as the successful candidate after a detailed hiring process.

She has worked in support of military families for over two decades including eight years with Military Family Services, and has been with the Esquimalt MFRC since 2014 as the community engagement manager. She has over 20 years’ experience working in non-profit organizations such as Victoria’s Cool Aid Society and Ottawa’s The Mission Homeless Shelter.

We chatted with MFRC Board Chair Samantha Krzywonos and the new Executive Director Jackie Carlé about the news.

What was the reason behind the timing of the hiring?

Krzywonos: I think there were a couple of factors in play for our board of directors. First, we had a long-time executive director here for many years and we wanted a chance to pause, think and make an informed decision on a new executive director. Second, we didn’t get a clear picture of what was happening with the MFRC governance review until the fall and we wanted that information before proceeding.

Finally, we wanted to be able to gather meaningful input from staff and we used that

information to find the right person.

What were the results of the governance review?

Carlé: MFRC board members and executive directors met in late-September and voted on their top options for governance. The choices were to continue with the current non-profit structure, make some minor enhancements, or to adopt a partnership model. As of right now, the final decision is still under review but we know the options under consideration.

What made Jackie the right person for the job?

Krzywonos: There are a lot of great reasons that Jackie was the best fit. She has two decades of experience working for military families. She has worked with other nonprofit organizations. She has

experience with governance models and working with a board of directors. I also think she has a real good pulse on the staff. The hiring committee took the input of MFRC staff to heart and it helped to guide the hiring process. It has been a smooth transition because of the professionalism of staff.

What does the future hold for the MFRC? Carlé: It is important people realize the vision for the organization is still intact. People can expect that same high level of programs and services. The Esquimalt MFRC has been around for nearly 30 years and I think the organization is a real forwardlooking organization. I think there is an opportunity for us to evolve and grow as an organization.

Esquimalt Formation Sports organizes sports teams, leagues, and tournaments from the Formation/Base level to international competition. The programs offered are: • Cock of the Walk/Formation (Unit Competition) • Formation Teams (Pacific Regional and CAF National Championships) • CISM (International Sports)

Esquimalt Formation Sports teams are comprised of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members that are Regular Force or Class A, B or C Reserve Force and belong to CFB Esquimalt in full capacity or are Attached Posted here. Learn to Sail at the Canadian Forces Sailing Association! We offer courses for Youth and Adults of all ages, from beginner to advanced.

CFSA is a wonderful place to learn to sail, with favourable winds and a protected harbour. Sharing a harbour with the Naval Dockyard, there are always exciting things happening in the bay. Our one and two week programs are a great way for kids, adults and families to enjoy their summer learning on the water!

Our instructors are nationally certified through Sail Canada and trained in how to teach sailing, as well as first aid and boat rescue. We follow the Sail Canada CANSail curriculum of instruction.

CANSail is designed to be a set of progressive learn to sail standards focused on providing sailors with a solid foundation of core skills.

It allows sailors to learn and progress in any type of boat and consolidates key skills and solid experiences before adding complex skills. If a course isn’t running when you want to register for it, please contact us and we will see if there is an equivalent or way to get you sailing that week.

You are not required to work for DND nor be a member of CFSA to take part in our summer Learn To Sail program, but you will probably find that you enjoy sailing so much that you will want to join and benefit from the perks of membership!

A camp designed for little sailors wanting to familiarize themselves with salt water, sea life, and sailing. Focused on fun, and being comfortable, and safe on the water and docks.

Opti Wet feet is a one week course. Classes run from 8:30am to 4pm Monday to Friday

Evening classes for Sail Canada accredited CANSail basic sailing skills. This is an adult class for the beginner sailor or those with limited sailing experience to learn in double handed or single-handed boats.

This is a four week course taught on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30pm to 9pm.

Opti Basic (7-12 years)

Adult CANSail Advanced

CANSail accredited introduction to Opti sailing. The program introduces children to sailing in a fun, safe environment. With two sailors per boat, children work on the basics of sailing in a comfortable, fun, and enjoyable atmosphere. Opti Basic is a one week course.

Classes run from 8:30am to 4pm Monday to Friday

(Pre-req: CANSail Basic or White Sail III)

Opti Advanced (Under 14 years with Opti Basic completed)

CANSail accredited continuation and development of the Opti basic program. Sailors learn to “single hand” and sail by themselves! Young sailors gain independence as their Opti Basic skills develop and more advanced skills are gradually introduced. Opti Advanced is a one week course. Classes run from 8:30am to 4pm Monday to Friday

CANSail Programs (Over 12 years old) CANSail Basic Basic sailing course for new sailors or those with limited sailing experience. Sailors will learn the fundamentals and be introduced to the sport of sailing through on the water games and activities. The course includes safety, crewing, steering, and seamanship. This is a two week course running Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4pm.

CANSail Advanced (Pre-req: CANSail Basic or White Sail III)

Sailors build on existing skills in all types of conditions and to a higher proficiency. Through on water games and activities sailors are introduced to concepts such as right of way, reading wind and waves, as well as many other skills. This is a one week course; Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4pm.

Advanced sailing skills for those who have completed CANSail Basic or the traditional White Sail III courses. Sailors will work on refining skills in heavier winds, work on boat handling, and will be introduced to the concepts of right of way and reading the wind and waves among other skills. This is a 3 week course to be taught over the weekend: Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm.

Family Sailing Course (Older than 7) New this year!

A Saturday CanSail Basic class that will focus on getting the family learning together and building fun memories. This is aimed at the less experienced members of the family, but all experience levels are welcome to join. This is a three week course taught on Saturdays from 9am to 4pm.

Before and After Supervision We know that summer camps often cause conflicts with work, so we offer a way to drop your kids off early and stay a little while after class.

Games and other on-shore activities keep kids busy as well as few small learning opportunities while hanging out with an instructor.

If you are interested in this please email us a week before your course or talk to the Head Instructor on the first morning during registration

What to Expect Expect to go sailing on your first day and every day, rain or shine. The weather can be varied on the water so please come prepared with a hat, sunscreen, wind-breaker, change of clothes, towel, lunch, snacks and plenty of drinking water. Only close-toed shoes are allowed on the docks and in the boats. Safety (i.e. bike) helmets are required for all students under 16, unless a waiver is signed by the parent. We have a few helmets available but you are encouraged to send your child with their own that fits them and they are comfortable with. PFD’s are supplied, but feel free to bring your own.

A Parent/Guardian must attend the first class to sign necessary waivers.

CLUBS Aquarius Dive Club No pagers, no phones, no boss! At 90 feet it’s a different kind of pressure.

After 25 years, Aquarius has grown to become one of the largest active dive clubs in the Canadian Forces. With the Aquarius Dive Club, divers can take advantage of all the premiere dive sites Vancouver Island has to offer.

Our instructors offer entry level “Basic Open Water” courses as well as “Advanced Open Water” specialties including: Dry Suit, Deep, Night, Wreck, Enriched Air / Nitrox, Photography, Rescue and Dive Master.

Unrestricted by geography, you can

regularly find Aquarius Dive Club on the Boeing 737 sunk in Chemainus, HMCS Cape Breton and HMCS Saskatchewan in Nanaimo, HMCS Columbia in Campbell River. You will find us on our annual May trek up island for a fantastic weekend of diving and good times. You can join us for our overnight camping & dive trips to China Creek, diving the water-filled missile silo in Washington and diving in other waters further afield. You can also simply enjoy one of our many wonderful local dive sites in the pristine BC waters.

CLUBS Model Railroad Club The model Railway Club started as an N Scale (1/160) NTRAK modular layout in December 1997. Currently the NTRAK layout is 30 plus feet by 40 plus feet. These modules are continuously updated as new techniques and experiences are gained including Digital Command Control (DCC) systems.

The N Scale layout is currently completing conversion to DCC but this does not preclude DC locomotives from being run on the layout.
