This includes deployments, joining a new community, and providing social and mental wellness services so that families can stay well and military members can focus on their mission.

WHO WE ARE: Personnel Support Programs (PSP) in CFB Esquimalt is a dynamic organization encompassing a wide spectrum of responsibilities: Fitness, Sports, Recreation, Health Promotion, Sponsorship and Donation and Lookout Newspaper and Publishing House. It’s primary responsibilities are to “Serve those who Serve” by defining, assessing and providing fitness and sport’s needs, recreational needs, internal communication, health, well-being and overall quality of life for the military community.

Registration & Cancellation

If you cancel

MFRC programs: Full refunds will be processed by contacting the MFRC at 250-363-2640 a minimum of 3 days prior to the program start date.

PSP programs: Full refunds will be processed by contacting PSP at 250-363-1009 a minimum 48 hours notice prior to the program start date. Please note cancellations after the required dates will be subject to approval and subject to an administrative fee. Once a program has started refunds will not be provided.

Registration for programs and/or services is important as we strive to provide quality programming. Registration helps us determine the number of participants to prepare for. CONTACTS

Refund Process MFRC programs: If paid by credit card, the money is refunded back to your card. If paid with a debit card at the Signal Hill location, the amount can be refunded back to your debit card. If paid by cash or debit card at the CPAC location, a cheque will be issued. Please allow 2 weeks for processing.

PSP programs: All refunds will be given back to the individual by the method they paid. If the payment was completed by cash we are able to refund directly to a debit card or you can request a cheque.

The Naden Athletic Centre has numerous facilities and programs for military personnel, their families and DND employees.

I started running seriously this summer and absolutely love it. I prefer running outside and I would like to continue training outdoors during the winter months, provided this doesn’t put my health at risk.

My concern is that when I exert myself in the cold, I often get a burning sensation in my lungs and I cough after the workout. Friends tell me running in cold weather could freeze my lungs. Is that possible? – Concerned Dear Concerned, congratulations on discovering the joy of running. There are many myths about the dangers of cold weather running, including the risk of freezing your lungs. Research has shown that people can train in temperatures even colder than minus 50°C without damaging their lungs. Our bodies are designed to function in cold weather, and regardless of the temperature, we have mechanisms that ensure the air we breathe in is at body temperature and humidified when it reaches our lungs.

While inhaling cold air won’t damage your lungs, it can irritate your airways and cause bronchospasms. You might experience a burning sensation in your airways, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing. As air gets colder, it tends to

get drier. So the body needs to work hard to not only heat but also to humidify the air you inhale. Inhaled air is humidified by water donated from the cells that line your airways. When these cells get dehydrated, they become irritated, and you experience bronchospasm.

Try the following strategies to reduce your risk of irritating your airways: • Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Your nose heats and humidifies inhaled air better than your mouth.

• Wear a scarf, balaclava or ski mask over your nose and mouth. This helps trap heat and humidity when you exhale.

• Ensure you are well hydrated for your workouts.

• Schedule your runs for the warmest time of the day.

• Progressively increase your training intensity as tolerated.

Bottom line: There is no risk of freezing your lungs running anywhere on Earth. Your symptoms suggest you may have bronchospasms, so you may benefit from trying the strategies mentioned above. If your symptoms persist, you may need to be medically assessed.

Become a vital part of a successful deployment by getting involved as a Family Network Volunteer. Enhance your group facilitation skills, provide information and support to your fellow military families, and gain experience with communications and organizing special events. You will need to commit approximately six hours per month. The MFRC is currently seeking volunteers for several networks as well as general office volunteers. Extra volunteers are always needed to assist with activities, communications and planning.

Birthday Parties BOOK your party with PSP Recreation Book your child/youth’s next Birthday Party with PSP Recreation. We offer a number of theme parties to choose from. Most of our Parties take place on Saturday or Sunday, however, there are a few themed parties with flexibility (like our ‘Dodge in the Dark’ Party). Check out the variety of themed parties available!

PLEASE NOTE: Our Birthday Parties usually take place at CPAC on Saturdays from 1:00-3:00pm, 3:30-5:30pm, or 6:00-8:00pm and on Sundays from 12:30-2:30pm, 3:00-5:00pm, or 5:30-7:30pm unless otherwise indicated in the description. Books for Breakfast Program

Have fun with music! This is one of our most popular programs, very lively and will be very enjoyable for you and your child. Through a partnership with Victoria Conservatory of Music, you and your child will listen to an Early Childhood Music Educator and have a chance to make your own music with a variety of instruments. The MFRC is inviting parents or caregivers and their children (up to the age of 6) to join us for an hour of healthy breakfast snacks, great stories and interactive songs. Parents need a break! Try Casual Child Care for a few hours of respite or to get things done without your “little helper.” Take the time to destress yourself! Book up to 1 week in advance, maximum 2 times per week. Punch cards are available! Please pay the front desk at the CPAC MFRC prior to entering program.

The MFRC’s ECE certified Educators provide fun and creative opportunities for your child! Classes are available at the Colwood Pacific Activity Centre. Please call to inquire about our 2 or 3 day a week classes that can help your child to learn through play. Some spaces may still be available. All 2018-19 classes have a maximum of 10 students. Parent participation is required for field trips.

Casual Child Care Punch Cards Casual Child Care Punch Cards are available! Save a few dollars when you buy a $65 card good for 6 sessions of child care. Cards are available at the MFRC and are available for children over 18 months of age.

“Welcoming Your Baby” Box Expectant military parents can receive a free “Welcoming Your Baby” box from the Military Family Resource Centre. Each box comes with a mattress and the box can be used as a bed for use by newborns.

You will also receive samples of diapers, wipes, and other freebies.

The MFRC has included a developmental toy, tips on parenting in the military lifestyle, an emergency child care plan, and information on programs, activities, breastfeeding and safe sleeping. Visit www.esquimaltmfrc.com/welcoming-baby-box for the registration process.

Imagination Library Funded by donations, this program enhances literacy and develops resilience in children as they experience the challenges of the military lifestyle. Families with babies born within the last 12 months to serving regular force members and class B/C reservists at CFB Esquimalt are eligible to register. Help your child adjust to a parent being away on deployment. Kids interact with other children who are going through the same experience. These workshops will help validate your child’s feelings about deployment. Stop by any MFRC location to pick up your copy today! Copies of these manuals are available to deployed members on their ships and electronically upon request. Deployment staff can assist you throughout the deployment via email support.

Mail Drop Off Locations Send mail and parcels to your deployed member for free! The MFRC is an approved drop off site for the Fleet Mail Office for Units with published mail dates or for any land based deployment outside of Canada. The MFRC will accept parcels and letters for deployed members at either CPAC MFRC or Signal Hill MFRC. Visit www.esquimaltmfrc.com for addresses, mail dates and guidelines. Please note: If your military member is away on a course or imposed restriction (IR), you must mail your letters or parcels through Canada Post.

Military Family ID Card It takes just 10 minutes to get this valuable ID card. The card is available to all regular and reserve military family members age 13 years and up. Use it to access base services such as the Naden Athletic Centre, to access Dockyard and Colwood by vehicle for pickups and drop-offs, and to receive discounts from local businesses. The CAF member must be present to sign the card at the time of issue and present their MPRR. The MFID is available at Signal Hill MFRC and CPAC MFRC.

ADULT SOCIAL AND MENTAL WELLNESS Social and Mental Wellness Kids Have Stress Too This interactive workshop focuses on the important role of parents and caregivers in helping young children learn to manage stress. The child’s ability to cope with stress in the early years has consequences for physical and emotional health throughout life. Mental Health First Aid In support of the Veteran Community and in partnership with Veterans Affairs Canada, a customized version of the Mental Health First Aid is available for members of the Veteran Community. Mental health first aid is the assistance provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem or who is in a mental health crisis. Members of the Veteran Community will receive this training at no cost. Seats are limited and registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Social and Mental Wellness Resources and Services Diverse and Special Needs The Family Navigator Coordinator at the Esquimalt MFRC offers oneto-one support for Canadian Armed Forces families with a family member with extra needs. This person can work with you to: • navigate the special needs, education, mental health, and health care systems • advocate for services • develop a support plan for persons with diverse needs • create a family care and support plan for upcoming deployments • find services for caregivers caring for an elderly family member or a family member with health concerns • prepare for a posting in or out of Greater Victoria Need assistance? Emergency Family Planning You need to plan ahead for the unexpected. If something happened to an at-home family member during a deployment, you need to have a workable emergency family plan. The MFRC can help you develop your plan, look at ways to build your support system and may be able to provide some assistance upon assessment.

Short-term Counselling Individuals, couples and families can access short-term counselling sessions at the MFRC in a confidential atmosphere of support. Registered social workers provide support with stress, relationship issues, parenting challenges, the military lifestyle plus much more. Triple P – One on One Consultation Triple P offers one-on-one consultations to support you with implementing strategies and techniques that promote positive parenting.

HEALTH PROMOTION Strengthening the Forces offers Health Promotion Programs designed to assist Canadian Forces members, their spouses, and civilian employees to take control of their health and well-being. Maintaining a high level of health improves ones ability to perform effectively and safely on CF operations, and contributes to a higher quality of life for everyone.

Programs *Creating an Addictions Free Workplace: Supervisor’s Training (Mite 117733) This program is designed specifically for the Canadian Forces and for personnel in leadership positions (MS and above). The course is designed to assist leaders to promote an addiction free culture in their workplace. Participants learn about substance misuse, warning signs, effective interviewing skills, active listening skills, enabling, and how to challenge and change unhealthy workplace cultures.

Director General Alternative Dispute Resolution (DGADR), Military Family Services (MFS) and Health Promotion (HP) program, Strengthening the Forces (STF), have partnered in the development of this course to give individuals in the CAF community the opportunity to increase their ability to communicate more effectively.

*Lifestyle Education through Activity, Resilience and Nutrition (LEARN) LEARN is a 12 week program that combines physical activity, nutrition, mental fitness/resilience training, stress management and conscious relaxation to help participants reduce their waist circumference and improve their overall fitness through both education and physical training modules. The program is delivered by the Regional Adaptive Fitness Specialist and Health Promotion Specialists and is endorsed by the MARPAC Health and Wellness Strategy.

The target population for this program is members who have an unhealthy waist circumference as defined by the World Health Organization (women over 88 cm and men over 102 cm), poor nutrition habits, and/or an unsuccessful FORCE test.

LEARN runs for 12 weeks beginning in January 2019.

*Managing Angry Moments (MAM) MAM helps participants learn how to use anger constructively. It is a course intended for everyone as we all feel anger at various times. Participants gain a better understanding of their relationship with anger.

Cock of the Walk (COTW) The Formation Cock of the Walk program is a program that has grown to include both fleet and base units. Formation Teams (CFB Esquimalt Tritons) Esquimalt Formation Sports teams are comprised of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members that are Regular Force or Class A, B or C Reserve Force and belong to CFB Esquimalt in full capacity or are Attached Posted here. The Tritons represent CFB Esquimalt at Canada West Regional Championships for various sports, and if they win at the Canada West Regional Championship move on to represent Canada West Region at the National Championships. The Basics of Self Awareness are the

BASICS OF SELF DEFENCE

T

oo often today I see many martial sports proposing effective real world self defence to their prospective customers. In 5 easy classes you too can become highly trained and full of confidence and so on.

Let me start by saying this is entirely untrue and is appealing to the lazy, “buy my way” attitude of people. These places appeal to your weaknesses and they are highly successful at it. They are running a business and you are the unsuspecting customer, ready to pay up if it makes you feel good for the moment.

Real self defence comes from regular, consistent effective training. It takes time; it takes effort; it takes commitment; it takes sore muscles and bruises and sweat; and it doesn’t come with loyalty points, bottled water, fresh towels, and lots of ego patting.

You are not a customer in a real martial arts school. You are a student, and are expected to act like one. Show up, learn, practice, achieve, and make the best of yourself.

In almost every situation today, the average person will

not have to face an actual fight scenario. Walk away, call the police, get to safety, etc.

It is only in a real scenario where a criminal has targeted you specifically to attack (for one reason or another) that you will be faced with true aggression and need real skills to deal with it effectively and win. This cannot ever come from sporadic, ineffective martial sports training. The criminal trains more than you, is focused on you specifically, has a plan, and is already one step ahead of you when he attacks. He or she has done this before. You probably have never faced it in your life.

The first step to true self defence is situational awareness.

This is not paranoia.

It is observation. It is wakefulness. It is caution and mindfulness.

Next time you are out shopping for groceries or in the mall, just stop and observe.

Look at the crowds of people walking around. Most are completely tuned out. Staring at cell phones, ear buds blaring, distracted by their children, focused on some article of clothing or whatever they

want to buy, unaware of those around them except in the most basic of terms. Like an amoeba; simple avoidance patterns as people move about with little awareness and only self-focused.

This is amazingly oblivious considering the upswing in random attacks on everyday people in crowds at any venue from the sidewalk to a concert to a shopping mall.

For the first lesson of real self defence let’s focus on awareness.

Be mindful of where you are. Look, really look, at other people and see those that may cause some concern for you. Know who is behind you. Know where the emergency exits are. Have a plan to save yourself or those you care about if something should happen. Keep your eyes on where you are going instead of your phone. Keep

your ears listening to things around you instead of blocking out everything for some random song you choose from your playlist. Put your back to something solid if you need to stop. See the route ahead of you and navigate with eyes open. Go with someone who is also paying attention and as a second set of eyes and ears.

Notice when you become distracted and practice mindfulness. Come back to awareness of the here and now.

I hope you will carefully consider these things and add them to your life.

CLUBS Model Railroad Club The model Railway Club started as an N Scale (1/160) NTRAK modular layout in December 1997. Currently the NTRAK layout is 30 plus feet by 40 plus feet. These modules are continuously updated as new techniques and experiences are gained including Digital Command Control (DCC) systems. The N Scale layout is currently completing conversion to DCC but this does not preclude DC locomotives from being run on the layout.

The HO Scale (1/87) modular layout is also 30 plus by 40 plus feet and has completed conversion to DCC. Again this does not preclude DC locomotives from enjoying the wonders of the layout. Some of these modules depict logging operations, mining operations and a locomotive servicing facility.

Both of these layouts have been on public display and have won multiple awards as “Best Operating Layout”, “Favourite Operating Layout”; and “Best Module” at train shows in Victoria and Nanaimo. Our layout at “Christmas in the Village” is the perennial favourite display at the Saanich Historical Artefacts Society Christmas presentation.

The Club actively participates each year in the Victoria Train Show, Westshore Town Centre Hobby Show, Nanaimo Regional Train Show, Esquimalt Buccaneer Days, MARPAC Expo and the West Coast Welcome.

All Active or retired military members, DND and other Government employees are welcome and invited to join the CFB Esquimalt Model Railway Club. We also are allowed limited numbers of others who do not meet the previously noted requirements as well as

junior members providing the parent is an active member. The Club currently meets every Wednesday from 1300-2130 hours and Saturday mornings from 0830-1200 hours in the basement of Building 1031 Work Point Barracks.

The focus of the Club is three-fold: • To promote the social aspect of group riding we provide avenues for socializing and participating in group-ride activities, including charity ride events; • To assist in you “self-help” repairs we provide limited repair shop facilities and equipment (bike hoist, and fully kitted tool kit), including instructional classes; and, • To develop rider skills we provide rider Mentorship training “ride-alongs” with experienced riders that: help members develop group riding skills; help members hone their riding skills in preparation for their motorcycle skills or Class 6 road tests; or, simply enhance their everyday riding skills.

And for those wanting to learn to ride from scratch: We are now affiliated with “Learn to Ride” (a motorcycle training company that teaches new riders), who provide Club members with a discount on training courses. They provide the bikes; you simply provide the enthusiasm to learn.

Club members are proud of the CAF, enthusiastic members of the community, and staunchly promote SAFE driving habits. We are motorcycle enthusiasts with a zest for group riding!
