DID YOU KNOW Murphy's Law is an adage that is typically stated as: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong". Here are some examples:

Law of Mechanical Repair - After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch.

Law of Probability - The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act.

Variation Law - If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now.

Law of the Bath - When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone will ring.

Law of Close Encounters - The probability of meeting someone you know increases dramatically when you are with someone you don't want to be seen with.

Law of Biomechanics - The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach.

Law of the Theater - At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle always arrive last. They are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, beer, or the toilet and who leave early before the end of the performance is over. The folks in the aisle seat come early, never move once, and have long gangly legs or big bellies and stay to the bitter end of the performance. The aisle people also are very surly folk.

The Coffee Law – As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold.

Murphy's Law of Lockers - If there are only two people in a locker room, they will have adjacent lockers.

Law of Physical Surfaces The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on a floor are directly correlated to the newness and cost of the floor covering.

Law of Physical Appearance - If the clothes fit, they're ugly.

Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy – As soon as you find a product that you really like, they will stop making it OR the store will stop selling it!

Doctors' Law - If you don't feel well, make an appointment to go to the doctor; by the time you get there, you'll feel better. But don't make an appointment and you'll stay sick.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT stayed positive, flexible, and came together as a group facing all the major changes caused by the pandemic, to win a lot of games.

PM Are you working out now, or getting some rest and time off? MR I have to take care of my body first, getting healthy, and am taking a few weeks to focus on that. I am really enjoying not having to travel, just to be able to spend time here in the community, to be at home with my family.

This Resident Spotlight is on Miami Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas. If you follow Major League Baseball and the Marlins you know Miguel (nickname “Miggy Ro”) is one of the team’s sparkplugs, a consistent performer at bat and in the field. Miguel resides in Pembroke Falls and occasionally enjoys playing tennis with his wife Marianna and his 5-year old son Aaron. The interview was conducted by contributing editor and tennis coach Pat Mason (PM).

PM How did you get started in Baseball? MR Baseball and softball are in our blood, a family tradition for us. I grew up in Venezuela watching my parents, grandparents, and aunt play. I got started around age 3 or 4. But I got hit in the face a few times and got scared and did not want to play for a while, so I just played at home. After a while my grandmother told me I had to play in the other games too, or it would ruin our reputation, so I went back to play in games outside the home. Then I began to really love the game. We have a lot of competition in the youth baseball leagues. I did well and knew I was good. I worked my way up and got to play in higher levels first representing our community, then our state and then our Country (Venezuela) in competition. When I was 14 or 15 we had tryouts with talent scouts from pro teams there. When I was sixteen I was good enough to get signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization. PM Did you have a good year this year? MR Yes it was a good year but it was very tough with all that was going on. I had some hip and shoulder issues that sidelined me, plus I got the virus and had to quarantine in a hotel room for 3 weeks, by myself, which was also difficult. But it turned out well.

PM The team exceeded a lot of expectations to get to the playoffs. MR It really is a great story--that for the first time in 17 years we were able to get into the post season and go as far as we did. It is a tribute to everyone involved in the (Marlins) organization that, with all the uncertainty, we

PM Did you watch the World Series? MR Yes-- I was very interested. In 2014 I played for the LA Dodgers which was my break into the big leagues. A lot of the (Los Angeles Dodgers) players are still personal friends, so we were happy to see them win. But it was also great to see Tampa, another team from Florida, fight their way into the World Series as well. PM We were rooting for the Tampa Rays who were the underdogs; they looked overpowered compared to the Dodgers hitting and pitching. MR The Dodgers are a complete team on both offense and defense, with a lot of depth, and are really difficult to play against, and win. PM What is your take on some of the changes made to the game this year? MR It was a weird year with the pandemic, playing in empty stadiums, without fans and a shortened schedule. There are pros and cons to the rule changes. I think having a DH (designated hitter/batter) in both leagues will eventually become accepted in both leagues and will help to make the competition more equal. A pitcher having to face at least 3 batters is also a good rule change. Changing a double header from 9 to seven innings is good for the game too; it is better for the fans and the players, not having to perform for 8 to10 hours. There should be fewer injuries.

PM Any advice for kids coming up? MR You have to be willing to work really hard. The sport or career you are in doesn’t matter; if you want to be professional in anything, you to have to be dedicated to the job and put in the time. Besides working hard you also have to be willing to make sacrifices, give up things, not so easy for young people. You can’t stay out late at night and party and then be tired, out of it the next day when you show up for early training. You have to accept the trade-off of giving up some things to get there; there are no shortcuts, it is a lot of hard work and sacrifice for the good of the team and the organization. We thank Miguel for spending time with us for this interview. If you know a neighbor deserving to be recognized in a Resident Spotlight please contact Melissa Dume at the Clubhouse.

TECH STUFF THIS AUTONOMOUS FLYING TAXI COCOONS YOU FOR COMFORT-LADEN MORNING OFFICE COMMUTE

The next avenue for private air travel is flying taxis. Now that times have been unprecedented this year due to the ominous COVID-19 pandemic, Italian designer Andrea Ponti has designed the idea of concept electric flying taxis that’ll be autonomous. The all-electric flying taxi derives inspiration from Hong Kong’s popular bird of prey – the black Kite. Hence, Andrea has named his concept the Kite. It has a quadcopter-like propulsion system similar to that of drones with entry to the plush interiors from a single rear door. This drone-like flying car is designed to comfortably transport four people to their destination. Step inside the interior and passengers are embraced with private jet-like luxury. There are infotainment systems to keep track of things like current weather, distance to the destination, or perhaps a collection of your favorite movies. Under the seats, there is storage for keeping your belongings like bags or briefcases, and for people who have constricted time, there are retractable trays for working or having a quick snack before arriving for an important business meeting. Andrea says that Kite will land on docked platforms at the designated location that have charging ports to juice up for the next flight. To make sure the landing is smooth; the flying pod has retractable all-weather skids.

EYELIGHTS – THE FIRST HOLOGRAPHIC CAR ASSISTANT

The days of getting distracted from the road while interacting with your car’s infotainment system will soon be over, thanks to systems like Eyelights. Eyelights is a concept technology that uses a holograph instead of a real screen to display information like maps, vital stats related to the car, speed, etc. This allows you to keep an eye on the road even while interacting with the system. Further, since there is no physical screen, you can simply wave your hand in the air to control the system which makes it super handy (pun intended). Eyelights is definitely designed to improve and revolutionize how we interact with our cars and is capable of replacing touch interfaces completely.

UV MASK IS THE WORLD’S FIRST ANTIVIRAL FACE MASK WITH AN ACTIVE UV-C STERILIZATION FOR 99.99% CLEAN AIR

The UV Mask, a mask that actively uses UV-light to filter the air you breathe, giving you an unparalleled total filtration efficiency of 99.99%.

With multiple scientists presenting evidence to WHO that the COVID-19 virus isn’t particulate-borne but rather is an airborne virus (which makes it much more difficult to deal with), it’s time our masks did more than just trapping particles. The UV Mask, unlike your conventional N95, doesn’t just trap microorganisms… it neutralizes them too, breaking down the genetic materials of coronavirus in milliseconds.

The UV Mask comes with a dual filtration system that delivers the cleanest air quality of any existing face-mask. A preliminary replaceable N95 filter blocks 95% of particles like dust, dirt, debris, up to 0.3 microns. Microorganisms smaller than 0.3 microns then enter the UV-C Sterile Vortex, a helix-shaped filter that blasts microorganisms with UV-C light to destroy 99.9% of the remaining 5% on a DNA level, to give you air that isn’t just clean, it’s medical-grade, sterile-clean, bringing total filtration efficiency to 99.99%.

The UV Mask scales down active UV filtration tech to a wearable level (it’s the only existing mask to do so). Its patent-pending design uses a combination of a CE-FFP2 (EU standard same as N95) filter and two powerful UV-C LEDs to actively sterilize the air you breathe. Even during exhalation, the air you breathe out is sterilized and filtered too, effectively protecting asymptomatic people from infecting others around them. The UV Mask comes with a silicone outer-ring to create a comfortable airtight seal, ensuring effective protection from air pollutants, as well as preventing what I personally call ‘foggy-spectacle syndrome’. Multiple strap styles let you secure the UV mask around your head or even around your ear, based on what suits you best. The mask comes with a removable outer hard-shell that lets you access and replace the filter after weeks of use, while the UV-C lamp itself has a usage life of 10,000 hours, and the UV Mask’s internal battery runs for 6 hours on a single full charge.

THIS & THAT- Construction Fails

Watch out for that… Give cyclists space…somewhere else This well-meaning marquee is doing the exact opposite of what its reminding drivers to do. It takes up so much space in the lane that bicyclists are actually forced into the road, so they can avoid hitting the sign.

Safety first! For every construction fail, there is always someone behind it who ultimately chose to make it happen.

We’re not sure who approved this project, but we are pretty confident that a solid concrete pole shouldn’t be erected in the middle of a road.

A little to the left Best seats in the house Hopefully this poor guy got a really, really good deal on his ticket.

Whoever installed this sink faucet and basin seems to have gotten the spacing a little bit off.

Don’t you dare have an emergency here Good thing everybody has cell phones these days!

Oops!

The power of teamwork

Room with a view What was going through the minds of the construction team that installed this “perfectly” placed HVAC duct?

These three guys know that any job is easier with the help of friends. Finding themselves in desperate need of some cool air in their highrise apartment, they devised the plan you see here. It’s kind of amazing in its simplicity — no fancy lifts or safety equipment needed!

There are plenty of times in a day when we thank auto correct for helping us avoid some pretty embarrassing typos. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said when it comes to painting white letters on a black, asphalt road. And one construction worker found this out the hard way when he or she accidentally mixed up the T and O in the word “stop.”
