RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT Crime Prevention Seminar While officers of the Pembroke Pines Police Department work diligently to keep our community safe, do you know the number one crime fighting tool in Pembroke Falls? If you guessed the residents of Pembroke Falls, you are right! The spotlight is on all residents to be vigilant and to keep our community safe. A number of residents, in addition to Commissioner Iris A. Siple, were in attendance at a Safety Seminar on the topic of Crime Prevention/ Burglary at the Clubhouse presented by the Pembroke Pines Police Department. For those who couldn’t make it, here are a few tips provided: The concept of the crime prevention triangle simply states that in order for a crime to occur all three elements of the triangle must exist: DESIRE, ABILITY & OPPORTUNITY. By eliminating any one of these elements a crime cannot occur.
Safety Tips It is always a good time to do what you can to minimize the chances of your home or vehicle getting burglarized. Following the tips offered below, you can reduce your chances of becoming a victim. HOUSEHOLD SAFETY • Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave your house or go to bed. • Leave lights on when you go out. If you are going to be away for an extended length of time, connect lamps to automatic timers to turn on in the evening and off during the day. • Do not allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers, or flyers to build up while you are away. Arrange with the Post Office to hold your mail, or have a trusted friend or neighbor remove them regularly. • Arrange for your lawn to be mowed if you are going away for an extended time. Trim the shrubbery around your home to minimize hiding spots for burglars. • Check your door and window locks and replace them with more secure devices as necessary. Install deadbolt locks on all exterior

RECIPES Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients: • 4 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 to 1-1⁄2cup buttermilk Method: 1. Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Brush a baking sheet with melted butter or spray with nonstick spray. 2. Combine dry ingredients in a deep bowl. Gradually stir in 1 cup buttermilk, beating constantly, until dough is firm enough to be gathered into a ball. If dough crumbles, add up to 1/2 cup more buttermilk, 1 tbsp at a time, until it holds together. 3. Place on a lightly floured board and pat into an 8-inch flattened round loaf. 4. Place loaf on baking sheet and slash a 1/2-inch deep “X” into the top of the dough with a small, sharp knife. 5. Bake at 425 degrees F for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden. 6. Serve hot.
Irish Beef Stew with Guinness Beer
Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 onion, chopped • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper • 2 pounds beef stew meat, cubed
• 3 cups stout beer (such as Guinness®) • 2 potatoes, peeled and sliced • 2 potatoes, peeled and quartered • salt and ground black pepper to taste • Add all ingredients to list
Method: 1. Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. 2. Stir in the onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. Cook and stir until the onion has softened and turned translucent, about 5 minutes. 3. Stir in the beef, beer, sliced potatoes, and quartered potatoes. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to mediumlow, cover, and simmer until the beef is tender, about 2 hours. 4. Season to taste with salt and pepper before serving.
