School’s Open ... Drive Carefully (954) 602-4178 cbogus@miramarpd.org

Every fall, over 55 million children across the United States head back to school. With 13 percent of those children typically walking or biking to their classes, AAA warns drivers to be especially vigilant for pedestrians before and after school hours. The afternoon hours are particularly dangerous – over the last decade, nearly one in four child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Launched in 1946, AAA’s School’s Open – Drive Carefully awareness campaign was created as a way to help reduce child pedestrian fatalities and injuries. Here are several recommendations from AAA regarding ways drivers can help to keep kids safe: Slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian Boy Walking on School CrossWalkstruck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster. Come to a complete stop. Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding. Eliminate distractions. Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing. And children can be quick, crossing the road unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars. Reduce risk by not using your cell phone or eating while driving, for example. Reverse responsibly. Every vehicle has blind spots. Check for children on the sidewalk, in the driveway and around your vehicle before slowly backing up. Teach your children to never play in, under or around vehicles. Watch for bicycles. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicyclist. If your child rides a bicycle to school, require that he or she wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on every ride. Find videos, expert advice and safety tips at ShareTheRoad.AAA.com. Talk to your teen. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, and nearly one in four fatal crashes involving teen drivers occur during the after-school hours of 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Get evidence-based guidance and tips at TeenDriving.AAA.com In addition, AAA, offers safety information for children, including coloring pages, games and car seat safety videos, at SafeSeats4Kids.AAA.com. Message From the Mayor reetings Miramarians, Hope the summer months are moving along as you’d hoped and all is well. As is the norm, I wanted to share some information with you, keeping you updated with what is taking place in your beloved Miramar. A program recently begun by the City Manager’s office is taking shape. The Comprehensive Assessment of Revenues and Expenditures program, C.A.R.E., empowers our employees, residents and businesses to participate in the progress of the City by making recommendations that can be implemented during a 5-year strategic planning process. The program is a 10 point City Manager budget initiative launched to maximize the City’s human, capital and natural resources. Each committee has a Chair and at least one Co-Chair to implement strategies to support the City’s vision of the great City of Miramar. C.A.R.E. establishes sound financial management and responsible cost-effective utilization for use of public funds. Implementation of the C.A.R.E. Program involves support of each committee within the tem-point plan to address citywide focus areas.

Ten Point C.A.R.E. Committees Workplace Efficiency Expenditures Revenues Public/Private Partnerships Grant Programs Reserves Volunteer Programs Energy Policy Conservation Policy Capital Improvement Plan 12

Summary: We started the process eight months ago by working on suggestions. This allowed our employees to get a feel for the system before we fully implemented the other key elements like key performance indicators and citizen customer service surveys. We have generated over 600 suggestions in our initial 8-month period. Our committees reviewed and researched many suggestions and presented 31 combined suggestions to the City Manager for approval. The recommended suggestions will bring about a potential combination of cost savings, revenue generation and quality of life improvements for citizens and employees. In addition to the opportunities to increase our revenues, the process has empowered our employees are we are delighted that this is an additional benefit.

Yours in service, Wayne Messam Mayor

If you have any questions please call the violations office @ 954-443-1792 EXT 2250. Dear Homeowners, in light of concerns around the legitimacy and of risk of roof cleaning, I’d like to communicate my professional opinion. I own a small exterior cleaning company, which is certified, licensed and insured and has serviced thousands of roofs in the West Broward area. Roof cleaning can prolong roof life if done correctly. If done by inexperienced and uncertified individuals, unfortunately, it can also jeopardize the integrity of your roof structure. When choosing roof cleaning companies, I strongly recommend that you consider the method roof manufactures recommend, a non-pressure soft-wash. The non-pressure soft-wash method avoids direct pressure on roof tiles, and minimizes the amount of time your roof is being walked on. Using the non-pressure soft-wash method, on an average roof, takes about 20 minutes of roof walking, compared to 3 hours with a traditional pressure cleaning services. When considering a 30 year period, the walk-on time difference becomes clear, 90 hrs. vs.5 hrs. Also, non-pressure soft-washed roofs stay clean longer (2 years) compared to the traditional method (6 mo. – 1 yr.). When choosing soft-watch services, you should ensure you choose a company that places priority on protecting your greenery. Protecting greenery is simple to do, it just takes a little extra effort and care. Lastly, protecting your roof using the non-pressure soft-wash method may appear to be more expensive, but it’s not as expensive as prematurely replacing your roof. For additional information, please reach out to me. Sincerely, Damian Fragata, Co-Owner 954PressureCleaning.Com (954) 683-3327
