Physical Fitness training today is very specific depending on the demands of the sport or activity you participate in. Cardio is essential for the heart and lungs and the post-exercise endorphins always make us feel better than when we started. Full-body physical fitness begins with developing a strong central core. This is done by holding stationary planks and wall sits, ab and back work, squats and balancing exercises. Most of us know that after an injury, Rehab work must be done to bring the body back to its normal function. Current thought in conditioning emphasizes preventative Prehab, specific exercises that prepare the muscles, joints and tendons most vulnerable to injury to withstand the demands of whatever stresses will be placed on them. Our central core conditioning sets the base for prehab exercises. A key prehab goal is joint stabilization, particularly with knees and shoulders. We want to build up the muscle and tendons to do the work, cushion shock and reduce the impact into our joints. Extending the range of motion around each joint is very important in reducing the chance of injury. Ankle, elbow and wrist prehab exercises are also part of any full-body maintenance plan.
Elastic Bands - Many professional athletes and trainers now include the use of rubber tubing and stretch bands
in their programs. Stretch band work increases flexibility and muscle elasticity for quicker reactions, movement and speed.
Miami Open Masters Tournament The new Miami Open Masters Tournament was a huge success at the Hard Rock Stadium site. It is amazing they were able to get it all completed within a year! There were more raised viewing areas and space for fans as well as the players and concessions. The players were happy with it as well. Coach Anita and I got to do an on-court coin toss for an ATP match featuring rising Canadian start Felix Auger. Resident Spotlight: Connection Beyond the Finish Line By Andrea Moscoso

When Jim Sayih became father to Michael, his second born son 26 years ago, little did he know he would embark on the biggest adventure of his life. As part of the city of Miami police force and an elite fitness trainer, Sayih was 29 years old, and set to take the stage as a celebrity trainer with the likes of Gloria Ɛtefan and Mark Wahlberg among others. But Jim’s passion for wellness and fitness, as well as his extraordinary mindset to overcome challenges and limiting beliefs on and off the course were paving the way for what has become his life’s work: empowerment and connection by “bridging the gap between extremes” and teaming up athletes and differently-abled individuals through his and Michael’s organization Special Compass.
Michael was born 2 months prematurely in an emergency birth. He spent his first 10 days in ICU eventually making it home weighing 4 lbs. When Michael was six weeks old, he had an ear infection and Jim brought him to the doctor for what he thought would be a normal visit. During this visit, the doctor began to order tests that were out of the ordinary. Eventually, after Michael had a ct scan, Jim received the news that Michael’s emergency birth had caused him severe brain damage and he had Cerebral Palsy. At that moment, all that I though about was ‘How am I going to help him? said Jim. “I turned away happily from everything for my son. I accepted this card in life happily and we were going to play it.” And play it the did. Jim’s world began to revolve around helping Michael. He turned his home into a therapy room, and began to research and study brain development. And as an avid athlete, Jim began bringing his boys to duathlon races with him. He devised a contraption for his bike so he could tow Michael during bike rides and push during runs while Adam rode or ran by their side. Michael began to thrive. “Let’s do another one,” young Michael said after the first race the trio participated in, and that was the beginning of a movement. At races people began approaching Jim to ask if he would take their differently-abled kids on races, and Jim began recruiting friends to team up and bring these kids across the finish line. And this is how Special Compass was born. Special Compass’ mission is to create “life changing experiences for the differently-abled by promoting inclusion in the community using athletic events, and building opportunities for independent living.” The organization empowers self-esteem, growth, community and friendships by pairing up volunteers called “Power Buddies” with differently-abled individuals to participate in all kinds of athletic events. The bond between the Power Buddy and his or her team mate is priceless. “When you can tangibly see how something changes everyone, both participants and spectators, you know you are part of something greater than yourself. You get a greater perspective of the deep impact this has on every one. There is a sense of empowerment, connection and inclusion,” said Alex Brau. Alex is a power buddy who has participated in 3 races and is set to do his fourth race as part of Special Compass at this year’s Dolphin Cancer Challenge where he and his teammate are raising funds towards cancer research.

Special Compass has been doing events since 2002 and keeps growing. Michael is the president of the organization and Jim is its executive director. They have empowered hundreds of teams to connect and cross the finish line and are making waves in the athletic community. They have partnered up with organizations such as Best Buddies and the Miami Dolphins to continue to grow and expand their work. Currently, they are working to bring Special Compass to a national level with the support of Anthony Shriver. And for Michael and Jim, this is only the beginning. “It means a lot to me to see the people’s faces as they cross the finish line,” said Michael. “It means a lot to support people like me to continue to do this…to get them out of their homes and connected to life.” On Saturday, June 1st, 2019, ^ƉĞĐŝĂů ŽŵƉĂƐƐ is hosting its first Golf Tournament taking place at Jacaranda Golf Club in Plantation, F>. Preparation:
Ingredients: - 1 ½ cups all purpose flour - 1 ½ cups of sugar - ¾ Cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder (sifted) - 1 ½ teaspoon baking soda Chocolate Frosting - 1 teaspoon of baking powder - 18 oz of Semi-sweet chocolate - 1 teaspoon of salt (finely chopped) - 2 cups heavy cream - 2 large eggs - 1 cup unsalted butter - ¼ cup of vegetable oil - ¾ cups of buttermilk (room temperature) - 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract - ¾ cup of hot water
-Preheat oven to 350F. Grease two 8Ǝ cake rounds, dust with cocoa powder and line bottoms with parchment. -Place flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt into the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix until well combined. -In a medium bowl, whisk eggs, oil, buttermilk, and vanilla. Very slowly pour in hot water while whisking constantly. -Add wet ingredients to dry and mix on medium for 2 to 3 minutes. Batter will be very thin. -Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake for approximately 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean. -Place cakes on wire rack to cool for 10 minutes then turn out onto wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, cut each layer in half horizontally, if desired.

Cook on med-high, stirring often, until just simmering. -Pour hot cream over chopped chocolate and cover bowl with plastic wrap. Let sit 5 minutes. -Stir gently until completely smooth. Place plastic wrap directly on top of chocolate. Allow to thicken and set overnight.*

Tired of being kept awake by your snoring partner, endlessly staring at the ceiling while you try to get back to sleep? The Hupnos sleep mask aims to ease that problem. The mask pairs with an app that listens to you while you sleep to determine whether or not you're starting to snore. Once it detects a snore, it uses its built-in accelerometer to determine your sleeping position and vibrates to get you to move to a less snore-inducing position. A video doorbell with two cameras seems like it should exist already, but up until now... we don't think it has. Enter the Answer DualCam, which can keeps one eye forward and one eye on the package on your doorstep with its two motionsensing 1080p HDR cameras. You can view the two-camera feed on your phone through the Kuna app and when someone rings the bell, it pings your phone, so you can say g'day and tell them where to delicately place your ordered goods. The doorbell is expected to arrive in the second quarter of 2019 at a cost of $199.

Biking in the dark can be dangerous. Eu-wen Ding, as a business-school student living in Boston, nearly found out the hard way: he’d forget his lights, and cars would almost clip him. So he started thinking of a better way to ride. “All I wanted to do, was get from A to B without dying.” said Ding, Eventually, that goal led Ding to create the Lumos Kickstart Helmet ($180), whose LED lights not only increase a cyclist’s visibility but also blink to indicate if she is making a left or right turn. Riders can trigger the signal by clicking a wireless remote mounted to their handlebars or by synchronizing the helmet with their Apple Watch and making a traditional hand turn signal. The Lumos launched in 2017 after more than $800,000 was raised on Kickstarter; more recently, it became the first light-up helmet to be sold in the Apple Store.
