Presidents Message President’s Message Hello Fellow Sunset Lakes Resident, We are happy to announce we are relaunching our Sunset Lakes Newsletter. We look forward to bringing our community some great updates as well as some resourceful information.

Deborah Herling President

The Sunset Lakes Board of Directors is proud to have put together a great budget for the fiscal 2019 calendar year. We have worked diligently to deliver a budget that will maintain the high level of community maintenance, well maintained amenities and a property that we can all proudly be a part of. The monthly assessments should be reduced by one dollar the coming year. In addition, our reserve funds remain very strong and support the board’s commitment to maintain fiduciary responsibility of the community. Keep in mind, those reserve funds are in place to ensure our community is protected should any catastrophic event transpire or replacement of major building, amenities, or property be needed.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Deborah Herling Vice-President Joe Farkas Treasurer Joe Farkas

Additionally, this January an FPL project will begin. FPL will replace 647 lights with LEDs- this project will save the community approximately $12,000!

We are also excited to see many residents registering with Dwelling Live. As we have previously shared Dwelling Live is the #1 brand in access control and will provide residents with a new online Visitor Management System. Residents will be able to manage their personal visitor guest lists, view guest history, and manage their users and vehicles. Residents can receive real time text/email notifications and voicemails of activity, and even be able to send e-passes. This is a great addition to our community access. Please take the time to register if you have not yet done so. The system will go live on November 5th.

We will also again kick off the Holiday Season with our annual Canned Food Drive. Our Community has been extremely supportive of this event over the past eight years. This year, we will again partner with Jubilee Center of South Broward. Our donations of canned goods helps support Jubilee’s Pantry Bags and Feeding Program. We appreciate everyone’s contributions. Remember to also mark your calendars for Brunch with Santa, this year December 15th. LANDSCAPING

We should all take advantage of this quiet time in the weather to get our lawn, garden and landscaping in shape. On the upside the summer rains kept the community green and flowering, but the downside was a thriving weed infestation. They have sprouted up everywhere from driveways and pavers to flower beds, lawns and outdoor planters. Now is a good time to try and get them under control. Applying some weed and feed to the lawn and some carefully applied weed killer around the house, patio and driveway will help. Follow this up with a pre-emergent weed preventer such as “Preen” and the application of a quality mulch around flower beds and the base of trees, hedges and shrubs. Various products are available for the do-it-yourself types at garden centers, Lowe’s or Home Depot or speak with your lawn care professional if you’re unsure how to proceed. It is a good time to start thinking of getting your swale trees in shape and ready. Hardwoods, like the many oaks around the community, should be pruned and trimmed by a professional arborist and for those with coconut palms in their yards please keep in mind that flying coconuts can be a safety hazard in high winds. Keeping these trees clean will help keep you and your neighbors safe. It is important to point out that you must always hire a qualified arborist to trim and prune your trees. The use of a qualified arborist is a City of Miramar code requirement and improper pruning by an unqualified person could easily damage or kill a tree. All should keep in mind that if that happens, the homeowner will be faced with the added expense of potential Miramar code violations and fines on top of the cost of permitting, removing and replacing the tree. Homeowners with Royal Palms on their property, especially those located in the swales in front of homes, should be aware that these trees do need to be fed periodically and as they mature they will quickly deplete the nutrients in the surrounding soil causing the eventual loss of the tree. Homeowners should discuss their particular circumstances with a landscaping professional or have a licensed arborist evaluate the situation but unless there is a problem any commercial palm food such as “PalmGain 8-2-12” applied periodically in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions should be sufficient. Applications of Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt) or Manganese Sulfate soil enhancers may also be needed to restore health but be careful when applying as they can stain your sidewalk or home! For trees that are showing signs of a serious deficiency or disease, “top feeding” or other remedies may be recommended by a landscape professional to save the tree. Finally, keep in mind that areas with stagnant water such as uncovered buckets, flower pots, unused swimming pools and discarded tires are the breeding grounds of mosquitos! We ask all residents to do their part in controlling these pests and urge you to dump or drain any standing water that has collected on your property. Furthermore, certain plants like bromeliads will collect water where mosquitos can breed so it is important to rinse and flush these and other plants weekly. Please exercise caution and care and let’s all work together and do our part to help eradicate these pests and prevent the spread of the dangerous diseases they carry. The Landscaping Committee meeting is held the second Thursday of each month and all residents are welcome to attend and participate. Remember, you don’t need to be an expert or have a particular reason to attend – just an interest in keeping our community an attractive place to live is reason enough!

INGREDIENTS 7 tablespoons unsalted butter ¼ cup all-purpose flour 3 cups 2% or whole milk 1 pound elbow macaroni 1 garlic clove, minced or grated 1½ cups crushed Ritz Crackers (about 1 sleeve) 4 ounces cream cheese, cut into cubes 1¼ cups shredded sharp white cheddar cheese 1¼ cups shredded fontina cheese 1 cup shredded Havarti cheese 1 cup shredded smoked Gouda cheese ¼ teaspoon cayenne Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper Fresh basil leaves, for topping

MACARONI & CHEESE

INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. 2. In a large saucepan, melt 4 tablespoons of the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for 1 minute, stirring once to avoid burning—it will bubble. Gradually whisk in the milk and 2 cups of water, then stir in the macaroni. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil. Stir frequently until the macaroni is just al dente, 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, in a medium skillet, melt the remaining 3 tablespoons of butter over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds, or until fragrant. Add the crushed crackers and toss to coat. Toast the crumbs until browned, stirring frequently to avoid burning, for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside. 4. When the macaroni is al dente, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cream cheese, cheddar, fontina, Havarti, Gouda, and cayenne and season with salt and pepper. Stir until the cheeses have fully melted. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. 5. Evenly sprinkle the toasted cracker crumbs over the mac and cheese and place the baking dish on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the crumbs are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling. Remove from the oven and let sit for 5 minutes (yeah, right). Garnish with fresh basil. Dig in!

Tennis Update! A Message from your Tennis Director, Rob Nickels

Thank you for being a part of our wonderful tennis community. It is my pleasure to provide you with our current update regarding our beautiful facility at Sunset Lakes. See you very soon!

The Tennis Facility Court Renovations We hope that you are continuing to enjoy playing on our beautiful tennis courts. Over the past 2 months you will have seen the renovations that my maintenance team have been working on to ensure that the courts remain at the highest aesthetic and playing-performance levels possible. My fantastic maintenance team work tirelessly every day for your tennis satisfaction. Rob Nickels is proud to share with you all the maintenance work that we have been doing on our wonderful tennis courts.

     

Installed 2 new tennis nets on Courts 1,2 & 3. New black paint on the net posts on Courts 1,2,3,4,5 & 6. Improved perimeter drainage on the western sides of Courts 2, 4 & 6 and the northern perimeters of all clay courts. Improved drainage of these areas results in less puddling and less down-time after rain and watering of the courts. Increased the amount of water for the watering of the courts. We water the clay courts at 10:15pm, 2pm and at 3:15pm. You should see a great improvement in the playing surface of all clay courts. We have added and moved over 60 bags of clay (each bag has 80lbs of material). Adding new clay on a consistent basis keeps your courts playing at their best. Worked relentlessly in coordination with the Sunset Lakes HOA to fix the leaning light pole in between Court 1 & 2. The leaning pole was a result of the storm winds and was repaired for your safety. Thank you for your patience while this repair was being performed.

Junior Tennis Program Travel Match On Friday November 9th, our Sunset Lakes Elite Training Team traveled to Parkland Tennis Center to compete against their elite players. Coach Jose and Rob Nickels travelled with the team and we had great success. We look forward to inviting the Parkland Team to Miramar for a rematch! It was a great night with over 30 players and 30 parents watching the high-level tennis.

Halloween at the Tennis Courts.

Check out our Elite players Kenny and Salma getting ready for the Halloween night at the clubhouse! They stopped by at the Sunset Lakes tennis courts on the way to volunteering at the community event. Interested in having your child attend a FREE trial tennis class? Call Tennis Director Rob Nickels at 786-443-3477 to schedule your child’s free introductory class.

See you at the courts very soon.
