As a kid in Esperance, there are four days in the year that you await with unmatched levels of anticipation – Christmas Day, Easter Sunday, your birthday and the Esperance and Districts Agricultural Show. Arguably, the Show is the best of the lot. Rides and games, fairy floss and sugary show bags, live entertainment and animals, and the chance to show off your cooking or craft skills, and maybe even win a prize while you’re doing it. Oh, and did we mention you get a day off school to enjoy all of this, too? Having been cancelled last year (thanks, COVID), the anticipation for the 2021 Show is at an all-time high, and it’s not just the kids who are looking forward to it. We can’t wait to have our beloved Show back on October 15 and 16! Catch us in Sideshow Alley for fast food and even faster rides throughout the day and, if you’re over 18, we’ll see you at Ports Footy Club that night, having a boogie to Bottom of the Barrel as fireworks light up the Esperance sky. You’ll find our comprehensive coverage of everything to see and do at the Show on page 8.

October also brings with it the annual Helms Garden Open Day. Now in its 10th year, Lyny and Geoff Ling generously open their garden for the day, welcoming the public to explore the magical grounds in an effort to raise much-needed funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. We took a walk through the garden with Lyny on a beautiful spring day in September, hearing about her love of gardening and passion for fundraising for the Flying Doctor along the way. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, we guarantee Helms Garden will delight you, so read all about it on page 12 and then head along to the open day.

If you’re like many others since the pandemic, including Lyny and Geoff who grow their own fruits and vegetables, you might be interested in buying chooks to help you become more self-sufficient. There are countless varieties of chooks, so where do you start? We spoke with the Esperance Poultry Association about owning chooks and other poultry, and they gave us some great beginner’s tips, which you can read on page 10. They also gave us the lowdown on the weird and wonderful world of showing chooks, just in time for the Esperance Show.

For brothers Brett and Chris Ratcliff, opening a pub was always a bit of a pipedream. “Isn’t it every teenager’s dream to own a pub?” asks Chris, a carpenter by trade. “We didn’t think it’d really come to fruition until we realised there was a big opening in the market.” Chris admits he and Brett, a diesel mechanic, have had their share of business ideas over the years, but the pub idea was one that actually stuck. Despite having no hospitality experience behind them, together they realised that dream. 33 Degrees – gastropub up top and sports bar down below – opened on The Esplanade last month. Expansive ocean views, high ceilings and natural ventilation ensure 33 Degrees is a light and inviting space that achieves exactly what Brett and Chris set out to do – fill a gap in the local pub scene.

33 Degrees breathes life back into a premises that, in its heyday, housed an upmarket seafood restaurant, popular bar, and bustling café. At the beginning of last year, after several years sitting empty, it was decided that the building would be stripped. Brett and Chris decided to lend a hand on weekends, with the pub idea swirling about their minds but not quite locked in place. “Either way, it was going to be stripped down,” Brett says. “We thought if we ended up doing a pub, it’d put us ahead and if we didn’t end up doing a pub, well, we’ve helped someone out.” By the end of 2020, 33 Degrees had been granted all its necessary licences and demolition was in full swing.

Renovations required more than a simple lick of paint. The premises was completely gutted and the entire top floor removed down to slab level, with the existing roof and structural elements brought down to make way for a new roof and higher ceiling. Locally designed by Nathan Lang of Enhance Design and Drafting, the goal was to allow for as much natural light into the space as possible, while taking full advantage of the million-dollar Esperance Bay views. Using local suppliers and services was a priority throughout construction of 33 Degrees and, with a few minor exceptions, every facet of the build was local. “Everything we could get in Esperance, we did,” Chris says. Now the doors are open, that ‘buy local’ mentality continues. Behind the bar, three Lucky Bay Brewing beers are on tap, and Esperance Distillery Co is one of several boutique gin options on offer. In the kitchen, chef Joey Carabott has collaborated with Redz Pies to create bread rolls unique to the 33 Degrees menu, and he sources a number of meats locally, too. On the floor, staff wear tees designed by local label Fifth Drip.

A further five local investors helped get 33 Degrees off the ground, their financial and moral support essential in making Brett and Chris’ dream a reality. The brothers are also incredibly thankful to those who have shown them the intricate details of running a pub, something foreign to them just a couple of months ago. A distant relative, a publican in Margaret River, took Brett and Chris under his wing for a week, showing them the basics, like how to change a keg.

Their new team of staff have been invaluable too, many of them with much more experience than Brett and Chris. It’s a steep learning curve, but one they’re taking in their stride and enjoying along the way. The support they’ve received across the board, from their families to local businesses to the wider community, has blown them away. “We’ve had a lot of people putting in a lot of effort for us,” Brett says. “It’s pretty humbling really.”

Esperance Show Lives On

The most anticipated weekend of the Esperance calendar is almost upon us, with the Esperance and Districts Agricultural Show ready and raring to go this month. After a year off, the 2021 Show promises to be bigger and better than ever. Entertainment, food, and celebrity appearances are just the tip of the iceberg...

The origins of the Esperance and Districts Agricultural Show hark back to 1897, when Esperance’s first show was held in the Bijou Theatre. In 1952, the first official Esperance and Districts Agricultural Show was held in Hancock’s Hall on Andrew Street. Since then, the Show has been a fixture on the Esperance calendar, moving from Hancock’s Hall to the Bijou Theatre, then to the Fresh Air League, and finally to its current home at the Greater Sports Ground. While this year should have been the Show’s 70th year, last year’s Show was cancelled for the first time since 1952, due to COVID-19.

This year, the Show’s naming sponsor is Healthways, and the theme of the show is ‘Live Lighter’. The theme will be echoed throughout the entertainment offerings.

Gardening Australia’s Josh Byrne, together with chef Don Hancey from Buy West Eat Best, will showcase produce from local Dan Paris’ Mystwood Harvest market garden in their cooking demonstrations, while Salty Fit Personal Training will present yoga and Pilates demonstrations.

Another showcase event, ‘Your Prostate is Priceless’, will feature a talk by former West Coast Eagles superstar Glen Jakovich, focussing on men’s health and prostate cancer awareness. Sponsored by Farm and General, this event will also see CBH’s Brianna Peake discuss mental health in the farming community, and Melissa Hadley Barrett speak about restorative sexual health after prostate cancer.

The Esperance and Districts Agricultural Show has something to appeal to all ages, interests and tastes.

Kids and kids at heart will be enthralled by Reptile Haven, and the Kaleido Company’s circus performances.

Dinkum Dinos are returning as further entertainment for the kids, along with Pop Magic, Black String Puppets, and Josephine and Goggles. There will be the usual excitement of Sideshow Alley, a bevy of local buskers organised by Kyza Presents, and a huge range of

delicious food and treats available. Other highlights include local bestselling author Fleur McDonald launching her 18th book, and Bottom of the Barrel entertaining the over 18s, with Ports Football Club running the bar. The list of things to see and do goes on, as displays of local produce and craft, and the fireworks display on Friday night, also compete for space on the Show’s jam-packed schedule.

While many visitors to the Show are distracted by the dizzying lights of wild rides, the allure of sweet fairy floss, the joy of roving entertainers, and the excitement of show bags, the heart of any agricultural show is its agricultural displays. “The purpose of the show is to showcase all of the best that our agricultural region has to offer,” Esperance and Districts Show Secretary Fleur McDonald says. Visitors to the show can visit the stock pavilions to see prize-winning sheep, cattle and poultry, along with fleeces and grain displays. On the main oval, displays of stock and horsemanship will run over both days. There will also be a shearing competition, highlighting the incredible speed and athletic prowess of the district’s shearers.

Another exciting addition to the show this year will be the ‘Shank and Show’ competition, sponsored by Nutrien, where lambs are entered ready for slaughter.

This year, thanks to sponsorship from CBH and Southern Ports, school-aged children are offered free entry to the Show. The show usually attracts around 12,000 visitors over the two-day event but this year, record-breaking attendance is expected, with locals champing at the bit to attend after last year’s hiatus. Of course, none of this would be possible without the hard work of the Show’s organising committee. Fleur notes that the committee is always looking for new members, as well as interested people to help out in the leadup to the show. But in the meantime, the committee is excited to see people enjoying the Show. They can’t wait to see you there!

Esperance Poultry Association President Gavin Millard has only been breeding and showing chickens for a few years, but already he’s hooked. He has gone from having a few backyard chooks to keeping 11 different breeds, including Silver Spangled Hamburgs, Sussexes, Araucanas, and the distinctive black and gold Vorwerks. While Gavin admits that it’s a big job, especially when it comes time to get his chickens ready for shows, the enjoyment of being a part of the Esperance Poultry Association makes it all worthwhile.

When you visit one of the Esperance Poultry Association’s shows, you’ll see birds that look as though they’ve escaped from a Dr Seuss book. There are chickens in all shapes and sizes, from the huge Australorps with their glossy black feathers, to the tiny, cuddly Pekin bantams. There are chickens with speckled, spotted, and patterned feathers, Frizzle chickens with their ‘curls’, Araucana chickens that lay blue eggs, and Silkie bantams that look as though they’re wearing feathered hats. And then there are ducks, geese, guinea fowl, turkeys and even quail. While the poultry is sure to delight casual spectators, there is usually very serious business going on as well, as the judges determine which chickens are the best examples of their breeds.

Keeping chickens can be a completely addictive hobby. Gavin has noticed that many more people are keeping chickens these days, especially since the start of the pandemic. This could be in an attempt to be more self-sufficient and sustainable, or just because chickens are a fun backyard hobby! Chickens are quirky, interesting pets, full of personality, plus they’ll happily keep all of your food scraps from going to landfill. They are easy enough for children to look after, but the complexities of breeding the perfect chicken make it a challenging hobby for those who are interested in showing their poultry. And of course, chickens provide a regular supply of fresh eggs. For the members of the Esperance Poultry Association, it’s also a great opportunity to get to know like minded people who share an interest in our feathered friends.

The Esperance Poultry Association usually holds four events per year - their poultry show in July, two pencil auctions in April and August, and the breed competition at the Esperance and Districts Agricultural Show. The association always welcomes new members and encourages anyone to get involved. Young people are welcome to join as well, as the shows always have a junior section. As Gavin says, one of the best things about being involved in the Poultry Association is being able to learn from some of the very knowledgeable older members of the club, who are always willing to share their experience. It’s also a great place to get to know some like minded people who share an interest in chickens, so if you’re interested, why not get involved?

Ga vin ’ s t op t ips f o r k e e p i n g p o u l t r y If you’re interested in keeping backyard chickens, Gavin suggests that the most important thing to think about is housing. You’ll need a fox-proof fence, as foxes are a common problem in Esperance. You’ll also need somewhere dry and warm for the chickens to lay eggs and roost at night. Gavin also suggests that you choose a breed of chicken that suits you. For beginners, he suggests that bantam chickens make great pets, or you could go for some of the bigger, quieter chickens like Sussexes, Australorpes, or Wyndottes. Don’t forget that you can’t keep roosters in town. Ducks also make a great addition to your backyard, as they won’t scratch up your garden, and they’ll eat all your snails and other garden pests. Gardening for Good

At the bottom of a driveway lined with glass bottle trees – thought to be an old African custom to ward off evil spirits – sits a garden begging to be explored. It’s Esperance’s own Secret Garden; a sensory delight for all ages, as colourful as it is perfumed, as tactile as it is tasty. Tucked away just 10 minutes from town, Helms Gardens must be seen to be believed and this month, the community is encouraged to experience it for themselves, while raising money for an important cause, at the annual Helms Gardens Open Day.

Lyny and Geoff Ling have spent much of their lives travelling Australia, spending extended periods as far north as Darwin and as far south as Tasmania, where Lyny was brought up. Just over 10 years ago, after deciding to call Esperance home, they came across a piece of dishevelled land on Helms Drive in Pink Lake. “We drove past this place and thought, ‘This looks like us!’” Lyny says, despite the block having overgrown trees, unkempt lawn, and a house that hadn’t been lived in for years. “It looked totally different to how it is now.” Shortly after settling in, Lyny began chipping away at the garden, battling feral rabbits, stubborn tree roots, and the notoriously difficult Esperance soil. Initially, Lyny and Geoff were only planning to build a fairy garden for their grandchildren, however desire soon began to grow for something much more. Impressed with the progress taking place in the garden, a friend of Lyny’s suggested she hold an open garden day and, only a year after moving in, Lyny did just that.

For the first few years, the Helms Gardens Open Days were attended by little more than Lyny and Geoff’s friends, and friends of friends. They asked for a gold coin donation to view the garden, which was passed on to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

But as the garden grew, so too did attendance at the open days. Now in its 10th year, the event has become a highlight on Esperance spring calendar and is one of the biggest local fundraisers for the RFDS. Since its first year, the Helms Gardens Open Day has raised $40,000 for the service and, last year alone, raised more than $11,000. It’s an organisation close to Lyny’s heart. “We would be less a few friends and family members if the Flying Doctor wasn’t here,” she says. “It’s important to so many people in regional Australia.”

Helms Gardens is not only brimming with vibrant flowers, tall trees, fruits, vegetables and chooks, but an eclectic assortment of knick knacks and pre-loved objects, too. In the middle of the garden, the owl and the pussycat are headed out to sea in a boat, albeit one with a hole in it. Oversized French doors, locally handcrafted using recycled materials, conceal a fairy garden, complete with stepping stones and a pint-sized fish pond. And, hidden in a back corner, vintage bits and pieces paint an eerie picture of yesteryear. To find every treasure that calls the garden home would be just about impossible. “Lots of things are donations from the families of people I’ve looked after working at Home Care,” Lyny says. “But the op shop knows me pretty well, too!” Luckily, there is plenty of space to house the weird and wonderful objects Lyny is given or finds. When quizzed about the size of the garden, she laughs. “Big!” is her response.

Gardening is a lifelong passion for Lyny. As a child she spent time in the garden with her grandmother, who grew and sold flowers to raise money for missionaries. When Lyny and Geoff were on the road, she often lent a hand in other people’s gardens, and has fond memories of creating a beautiful garden when they built a home in Tasmania.

“I’m totally addicted!” she says of the hobby, which she credits for keeping her fit and well. “I don’t quite sleep in the garden, but I’m in here at every chance, nearly every day.” For as long as Lyny keeps gardening, she and Geoff will continue to welcome visitors to share in the garden’s joy and fundraise for the RFDS. Come open day, the garden belongs to the community just as much as it belongs to Lyny and Geoff. “None of it’s about me,” Lyny says. “I just do the weeding and then open the gates and say, ‘Come on in, give us all the money you can afford!’”

This year’s theme is ‘Fairies, Elves and Gnomes’ and visitors are encouraged to dress up. Entry is $5 (children free), with all proceeds going to the RFDS.

THE BRIDGE I find myself listening primarily to Western Australian music - a direct product of my work - though, in all honesty, the depth of quality is exceptional. It feels as if every time I punch in a WA artist (yesterday I was hammering ‘Neon Cheap’ by Methyl Ethyl) that the Spotify algorithm soon offers up ‘Booster Seat’ and I’m like yep, Spacey Jane really nailed it with this tune. WA continues to produce the goods. I believe last Friday alone three tracks were released by Perth artists, all of whom I love.

The Washing Line Economy dropped ‘Mirrors’, Tanaya Harper dropped her EP ‘Montreal’ and Grace Sanders released ‘Scrolling’. I love them all, though ‘Scrolling’ takes the cake for me. It’s a perfect piece of post-internet indie pop. Grace’s tunes have this epic dynamic that continues to draw me in. You can catch her live at Red Moon Rising on October 16 alongside the legendary Michael Dunstan.

Bronte is an absolute weapon, and I love working with her on this project as it slowly but surely evolves. Balmy Nights 2021 is going to be something else. We have an amazing line-up headlined by ARIA nominee Grace Barbe, one of my favourite WA acts.

BB Clay Co. Brooklyn Barrett’s polymer clay jewellery business, BB Clay Co., began on her loungeroom floor. Fast forward two years and Brooklyn’s work can be found in local stores, markets and online.

Wh en did you be gin w o r k i n g wit h po ly m e r clay ?

for me, an Etsy shop where I sell my designs and I try to attend as many markets as possible. My processes have also changed a little and I now use resin along with polymer clay. Resin adds a whole other level to my designs and there’s no going back for me now.

A few months after having my second daughter. She was the reason for starting this hobby, being able to have a creative outlet while she was sleeping. I’m sure I was supposed to be sleeping too. As they say, “Sleep when the baby sleeps!”

I suffer from anxiety and depression, so being able to focus my mind on something creative has helped immensely. Although putting my designs out into the world sparked a little anxiety, I have been well received by so many people from this community, as well as around the country.

I started creating my designs on my loungeroom floor or at the kitchen bench, and sanding pieces by hand in my kitchen. You can imagine the mess that was left behind. Sales were made from a Facebook photo album and the process was a little tricky. I now have two work stations that my lovely husband has created

The earrings I created for White Sands Gallery. I took inspiration from a photo in the gallery by Gary Alan.

They turned out absolutely stunning and they have been so well received by locals and tourists. My best seller would have to be the Christmas puddings I created last year. They were such a hit and I hope I’ll see them out again this year!

I am Esperance born and bred. I grew up on the family farm out towards Condingup just east of Esperance.

really pushed that realisation for me and throughout the tricky months we had here, I enjoyed the serenity and peace and calm that Esperance provides. I’ve always enjoyed the beautiful beaches but now there’s a whole other side that I enjoy too.

Artist in Residence: Steven Alyian The Cannery Arts Centre is currently hosting Steven Alyian as their Artist in Residence. Steven is a multimedia artist specialising in digital technologies and during his time at the Cannery, he will be putting together a multimedia installation entitled Exoterica IV. Inspired by the Esperance landscape, and our local flora, this exhibition will evolve over the time that Steven is in residence.

Steven’s installations incorporate video, audio and visual images to create an immersive experience for the viewer. As well as his work on the Western Australian arts scene, Steven has exhibited internationally as an Artist in Residence in Catalonia, Spain, and Skagastrond, Iceland. He is also a multi-award winning musician, with awards that include WA Music Industry Awards’ Most Popular Release, and Best New Artist. Steven has worked on a number of music videos and film projects, including the feature documentary ‘Frackman: The Movie’, and has collaborated with French artist ORLAN, Australian performance artist Stelarc, and musical acts Tame Impala and Chicks on Speed. While he is in Esperance, Steven is taking the opportunity to dive into the arts scene, playing music, and presenting workshops for the Kickarts program along with the exhibition he is putting together.

As an artist, Steven attempts to step outside of our society’s obsession with progress. He believes that the natural world can teach us how to slow down and learn to maintain the balance of the environment around us.

Steven often uses his art to draw attention to the causes that he is passionate about, and he believes that art can be an important part of activism. Exoterica IV is an invitation for the viewer to come along with Steven on a journey as he explores Esperance’s unique environment, learning along with him. Calling this exhibition an ‘environ-mental’ experience, Steven invites the viewers to step outside of their bodies and into a space of reflection, inside this three-dimensional audio and video encounter.

Exoterica IV runs at the Cannery Arts Centre until October 22.

Darcie Haven

I met Darcie last summer, as she rolled into her first gig with a Fender Stratocaster in tow, an epic change from the ever-reliable and family favourite acoustic guitar. I was surprised as a diverse array of original material spilled from the PA, an exceptional first performance for a local songwriter at the age of 19.

When it came time to craft a quality line-up for Balmy Nights 2021, I instantly thought of Darcie. And when the conversation turned to her preparation to head into the studio with Andy Lawson at Debaser Studios - where all Grand Casuals tracks have evolved from - to record some originals, I thought to myself, this lady has the drive.

Ca n yo u giv e us a q u i c k ru n - d o w n o f yo u r p a st s ix m o n t hs in m us ic?

The past six months have been a blur! After playing my first real gigs in Esperance over the summer I’ve become enamoured with exploring my music further.

I’ve been playing, singing and writing almost every day, trying to get better at the craft. I think hearing some really nice feedback spun me into action!

I bought a little interface and taught myself the basics of music production so I could whip up some demos of bearable quality to send out into the world.

Through the power that is Kyza Presents, I got in touch with one of the best producers WA has to offer, Andy Lawson. Since then, I’ve been preparing for my sessions with him and working on my debut single!

Ho w hav e you f ound w o r k i n g w i t h A n d y La wso n ?

Working with Andy was a dream. It was so much fun collaborating with someone who has such a ridiculous amount of skill. I could suggest absolutely anything, not articulate it very well, and he would somehow make it happen! We’ve created a really cool vibe for the debut single, I’m very excited to share it in January when it’s released.

Ha v e yo u p la ye d a ny sho ws in Pe r th?

I’m playing at the Indian Ocean Hotel in Scarborough soon, and I’m so keen for that! But I’ve found I’m really enjoying the online music space, particularly Tiktok. One singing video I posted has 75,000 views and 12,000 likes! Crazy.

The organic reach that Tiktok has allows random people to come across my music, and that’s helping build my following in a broader way than I think gigs can.

Do yo u fe e l lik e yo u ma y e xp a nd into a b a nd in the fu tu re ?

I would love to have a band that supports me in gigs, for sure. It’s all about finding the right people though, and that can be really hard. For now I really like the creative freedom that I get being a solo artist.

W ho a re yo u liste ning to c u rre ntly a nd who do you c o nside r yo u r g re a te st influ e nc e s?

Currently I’m listening to a lot of May-A, Laurel, Soccer Mommy and Holly Humberstone. I’m in a bit of an indi-pop phase! As for influences, I grew up absolutely obsessed with artists like Taylor Swift, The Veronicas and Miley Cyrus – you know, all those early 2000s music queens. I used to listen to their albums on repeat, pulling apart the melodies and instrumentation until I knew every beat by heart. I think I learnt the importance of a catchy bridge and bouncing melody from my obsession with those artists. More recently, Phoebe Bridgers is a BIG inspiration.

There’s something insanely magical in her emotionally raw song writing. Lyrics like “When I grow up, I’m gonna look up from my phone and see my life,” stay with you forever.

Myself I suppose! If that’s not too narcissistic to admit...

My experiences, my feelings, my thoughts, my worries, my joys, my sadness. I’ve always written as a means of catharsis, as most writers do. When I was 12 I wrote my first proper song, and since then I’ve become addicted to matching feelings with sounds. Writing sadness into a song makes the emotion beautiful. Writing joy into a song makes that joy even stronger. Until last year, song writing was an entirely private thing for me. To be honest, I’m still working on being okay with sharing.

It’s hard to sing about your deepest feelings to groups of strangers! Playing in Esperance over the summer and posting videos online has been a big step, but it’s been amazing to hear kind feedback.

Fa vo u rite Pe r th b a nd?

Perth’s music scene is incredible at the moment. My favourite band would have to be Dulcie – all-girl bands are pretty rare at the moment and they are crushing it.

In 1893, the first hotel in Esperance was built - a simple three room ‘wayside inn’ located on the Esplanade and surrounded by bush. At that time, Esperance was a sleepy little settlement with only a handful of families living in the area. This changed rapidly as the gold rush began and the population of Esperance swelled. In 1896, this wayside inn was rebuilt by its owner, John Purchase, on the corner of The Esplanade (then known as Edward Street) and Andrew Street, and it became the original Esperance Hotel. By this time, Esperance already had three other hotels, all doing a roaring trade as men came through the harbour on their way to the goldfields.

The Esperance Hotel was a grand building, boasting 56 rooms and a 120-foot verandah with a view of the bay. It featured a grand saloon bar, lined with painted timber panelling, and doors made from English oak. The saloon bar also boasted carved Corinthian columns, an ornamental frieze made from Huon pine and cedar, and a heavy counter made from karri.

The Pier Hotel was built in 1894 by Rob Symes. It was a single storey building made from timber and ‘ripple iron’. In 1896, a second storey was added. It changed hands a few times, until the Heenan family bought the hotel in 1901. Michael Heenan, who became the mayor

of Esperance in 1907, was also on the school board, which caused some controversy. A letter was written to the school board in 1907 stating that “Mr Heenan is a publican, at whose hotel the late Schoolmaster Mr Peel spent much of his time…”, complaining that Heenan was a bad influence. Despite the complaints, Heenan stayed on the school board, and he must have had a real interest in the school, as he had eight children of his own. The Pier Hotel survived a fire in 1908, thanks to the quick action of some locals. In 1910, a couple staying at the hotel woke up to see Halley’s Comet and subsequently raised the alarm about another fire. This time, the hotel burnt to the ground. It was rebuilt later in 1910 using limestone from Second Beach and in 1926, a second storey was added.

In the early years of the gold rush, two more hotels were built, both completed in 1895. The Grace Darling hotel was built by David Fienburg next to the Pier Hotel, on the opposite corner of the Esplanade and Andrew Street to the Esperance Hotel. The Royal Hotel, owned by J

McKenzie, was built on Andrew Street. Lined entirely in highly flammable pine, the Grace Darling barely survived the fire that destroyed the Pier Hotel. As the gold rush waned, the Grace Darling was turned into a boarding house before housing various businesses, such as a furniture shop and hairdresser. It was also home to Esperance personality ‘Moggy’ Bow and his family for a time.

Today, only one of the first four hotel buildings is still standing. The Pier Hotel was owned by the Heenan family until 1954, when it was sold to the DrakeBrockman family. In 1966, the Pier Hotel was sold to the Swan Brewing company, who dismantled and rebuilt the entire hotel, spending $600,000 on a solid concrete construction. The Grace Darling Hotel was a casualty of this renovation, being dismantled to make room for the new structure. In 1987, the Lewis family bought the Pier Hotel and renovated it. Like the Grace Darling Hotel, the Esperance Hotel went on to house several different businesses, including a bank. Sadly, the grand old Esperance Hotel burnt down in 1958. ⟶

↳ The Grace Darling Hotel

The block of land where it stood was occupied by a service station, but now stands vacant, with the newly opened 33 Degrees next door.

The Royal Hotel, on Andrew Street, was renamed the Esperance Hotel in 1945. In the same year, a licencing court ordered urgent renovations to the building, which had become a ‘death trap’. These renovations were undertaken and the Esperance Hotel went on trading, undergoing a few more name changes to become the Brennan’s Esperance Hotel and later the Esperance Motor Hotel. The oldest of Esperance’s original hotel buildings, the Esperance was ordered to undertake extensive

renovations once again in 2019. The hotel was closed and later sold. Esperance locals are hoping that the grand old building will be redeveloped and opened to the public again soon. Over the years, Esperance has had several other pubs and hotels, including the Travellers Inn and Chester’s Tavern. We are now lucky to have a great choice of watering holes, including the Pier Hotel, the Loose Goose, Taylor Street Quarters, and 33 Degrees.

Council Connections Council Decides on Post Office Square Iron Seat At Tuesday night’s September OCM, Council moved to keep the iron seat where it is currently placed, around the paperbark tree in the Post Office Square.

The iron seat was moved from the heritage listed pine tree when streetscape works were taking place. It was found that the fixings on the seat and seat footings were also directly impacting on the root flare and structural root zone.

Council was provided with a solution to reinstall the seat, and delivered a report stating the only solution which did not compromise the integrity of the seat or impact on the tree would be the installation of a raised deck around the tree for the seat to be housed on. This was not endorsed as the decking would be too high to be disability friendly and it would have interfered with pedestrian movement.

Additional seating options will be implemented in the shaded areas, making the space more community friendly.

#shoWcAse in Pixels State Winner Esperance Senior High School student Paige Fillmore has outdone every other entry in the state, being awarded the Overall Winner of the WALGA #shoWcAse in Pixels Competition for her Interpretation of Esperance artwork. Paige describes her work: “ … When you think of Esperance, you immediately think of the wonderful beaches and the big pine trees that have become a symbol for our town. But when you look beyond that, you realise that the town is the people not the place. That’s why the trees are being held up by the hands, the community holds the town together and makes it complete. The people have lead the way and made our town what it really is today.”

Shire of Esperance Finalists in Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards The Shire is proud to be a finalist in WA’s most prestigious tourism awards, the 2021 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards, in the Excellence in Local Government Award for Tourism category.

Achieving finalist status is very exciting as it validates the Shire’s effort and focus on tourism over the last couple of years, with work on tourism related infrastructure such as the new jetty, Adventureland Park playground, coastal camping facilities upgrades, the foreshore and Skate Park.

Supporting local businesses during the COVID lockdown and since by adapting the What’s On Calendar to disseminate information on what businesses and services were operating, and extra availability of overflow camping, has also been very important to our local tourist industry. The Shire has also worked on future tourism planning with the new Tourism Strategy and the James St Concept, and events such as Edge of the Bay.

Condingup Hosts Ordinary Council Meeting Local government is just that – local, and very accessible!

Condingup experienced what is essentially our own local government parliament with the September Ordinary Council Meeting (OCM) being held at the Condingup Community Hall. Community members turned out to observe and participate in this vital level of government, witnessing the regular business being debated and conducted, and asking informed questions from the floor.

Our Shire President and CEO are looking forward to answering these questions at the next OCM, meanwhile back in Condy we hope to have contributed to a greater understanding of the breadth of Shire business.

Wild Diversity As I sit here and write this month’s Bush Banter, I’m surrounded by over 600 species of flora at the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Festival. It’s been a busy weekend of collecting, identifying and sorting to put species names on the specimens. And next weekend, the delightful chaos of the process repeats itself for the Esperance Wildflower Festival. My heart is full. So, so, SO many beautiful flowers. Which leads me to this month’s topic… Diversity! The Esperance sandplains and Fitzgerald Biosphere are globally recognised as a biodiversity hotspot. There are close to 2,500 species of plants in the Shire of Esperance. To put this in perspective, there are 1,390 native flora species in Britain, or closer to home, the Shire of Margaret River is home to 1,500 species. Esperance’s natural diversity means our bush is incredibly special, complicated and filled with things that only grow here, known as endemics. But that’s not the only diversity I wanted to cover in this month’s Bush Banter. Warmer weather, wildflowers and time in the bush also means Mr Joe Blakey Snakey! Whilst everyone’s very familiar with Tiger Snakes and Dugites, Esperance is also home to Crowned Snakes, Southern Death Adder, Crowned Python, Blacknaped Snake, Spectacled Hooded Snake, Lake Cronin Snake, Pygmy Dugite, Ringed Brown Snake, Square Nosed Snake, Jan’s Banded Snake, and Master’s Snake. Spicy Eggplant & Potato Bake

Ingredients

2 large eggplants (sliced 1cm thick) Olive oil Salt & pepper 3-4 potatoes (sliced 1cm thick) 1 brown onion, diced 1 garlic clove, chopped 1 tbsp red chilli flakes 800g tinned tomatoes, crushed

1 tsp brown sugar 1 tbsp white wine vinegar ½ cup sourdough or panko bread crumbs ⅓ cup grated parmesan ⅓ cup grated mozzarella 3 tbsp capers, coarsely chopped ½ cup parsley, chopped ½ cup of basil, chopped

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 220°C. Drizzle eggplant with a generous amount of olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast, turning halfway, until it’s tender (about 30 minutes).

2. To make the sauce, add two tablespoons of olive oil to a medium pan over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic and cook, casually stirring for about 10 minutes on medium-low heat. Add chilli flakes and cook for another minute, then add crushed tomatoes and brown sugar. Season with salt and pepper and let it simmer gently for 20 minutes. Add the white wine vinegar and remove from heat.

3. Meanwhile, boil the sliced potato until it is just about cooked (about 20 minutes).

4. Spoon roughly a third of the tomato sauce onto the bottom of a large baking dish. Spread the potatoes and top with a third of the capers, parsley, basil and both the cheeses. Add another layer of tomato sauce and then half the eggplant. Add a further layer of capers, parsley, basil and cheese. Repeat with the remaining eggplant and toppings. You should have a nice layer of cheese on top.

5. Scatter the bread crumbs in an even layer on top and place in the oven for about 30 minutes or until the cheese is browned. Remove from the oven, and finish with a sprinkling of parsley and parmesan. Allow to cool before eating.

Shire President Ian Mickel urged farmers to prioritise their safety this harvest, after injuring

himself in a farming accident. Cr Mickel accidentally put his hand in a grain auger, causing him to lose most of the middle finger and shatter the pointer finger on his left hand. The Royal Flying Doctor Service flew Cr Mickel to Perth for treatment, however it wasn’t long before he was back in Esperance resuming his duties as Shire President.

A Queensland couple allegedly fleeing hotel quarantine in Perth travelled through Esperance before heading on to Laverton. The pair had been ordered to self-isolate in Perth after flying in from Queensland but after just one night, left quarantine and boarded a flight to Esperance. Police tracked the couple’s mobile phones and picked them up two days later on Goldfields Highway. They were arrested and taken to Kalgoorlie, where they were denied bail in Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court. Both tested negative for COVID-19.

Nominations opened for the 2021 Local Government Elections, with eight locals putting their hands up for four positions on the Esperance Shire Council. Of the eight candidates, Steve McMullen is the only existing Shire Councillor nominating for reelection. All vacancies are in the Town Ward, after a recent review of wards and representation saw the number of Rural Ward seats reduced from three to two.

The election will be held on Saturday 16 October.

Local industries were again crying out for staff, as labour shortages continued to cripple businesses in the region. The government’s unsuccessful attempt to bring overseas farm workers to WA has the agricultural sector concerned for the harvest season, while hospitality professionals scramble for staff ahead of what is forecast to be another bumper summer. Several caravans were spotted at the Shire’s overflow campground over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, leading to local speculation that the tourist season had already begun.
