Esperance celebrates French Week this month, recognising our town’s small but special French connection. The timing couldn’t be better for the opening of Bistro Louis, a new French café in the Museum Village. Not ones to pass up a fresh croissant, we popped into the new bistro to meet its owners, Paul, Catherine, and Roget (p. 4). With typical French flair, Bistro Louis is slinging great coffee and even better food, so it’s little wonder it has quickly become the busiest little café in town. If you haven’t paid the trio a visit yet, do it... Toute suite!

We also met with French classical guitarist Ingrid Riollot, who has been living in Esperance since 2019 [p. 8]. Ingrid has studied, taught, and performed all around the world, captivating audiences with her magical sounds throughout Europe, Africa, North America, and the Australia Pacific region. To say we’re lucky to have such a talented and experienced performer living right here in Esperance is an understatement. If you have a chance to see Ingrid perform live (hint, she’s performing at the Civic Centre on April 30) don’t pass it up. She will delight you with her incredible skill, passion, and French charm!

This month celebrates five years since local author Kim Maslin released her first children’s book, The Tweeting Galah. Kim’s gone on to write an entire series for kids about online safety, and how to stay safe in the digital world. We had a chat with Kim about the books, how they’ve been received, and what’s next on the cards for the author [p. 20]. Kim also gave us some great tips for online safety so if you’ve got littlies, this is a must-read.

Walking into Bistro Louis, the hustle and bustle of people and the chatter over hot coffee and fresh croissants quickly transports you to the streets of Europe, or more precisely, France.

Once inside, ‘The Three Bistroteers’ are spotted in their element. Barista Paul McKay bounces away behind the counter, slinging croissants and delivering coffee to the hands of eager customers through the little window in the wall. Catherine West sweeps past with a smile in her eyes and a plate of food in her hand. She chats to customers as she does the rounds and seems to know a lot of them well.

Out the back, Chef Roget Poutet, rocking an oh-so-chic and oh-so-chef felt hat, works his magic. Fresh croissants float by and the front counter is topped up, in between preparing orders.

Bistro Louis opened its doors in the Museum Village only weeks ago, but it’s already buzzing. Open from 8:30am – 2pm Wednesday to Sunday, with a plan to open nights and longer hours in the future, on offer is simple French food, homely not fancy. Think croissants of varying flavours, cinnamon scrolls, toasted croque monsieur, quiches, madeleines with lemon curd, and macaroons.

“There’s sometimes this thought that all French food can be unapproachable or is meant to be exclusive, but bistro food is meant to be simple, homely food,” says Catherine, Roget’s partner, who grew up in Esperance. “Eventually we’ll introduce some more interesting and challenging dishes, which I think Esperance will like. Probably not snails, but perhaps steak tartare with raw beef and egg.” ⟶

Catherine and Roget met while working together at (funnily enough) a French bistro in the streets of Sydney’s Potts Point. You can tell, and taste, that Chef Poutet has a good 40 years’ experience. Growing up in Melbourne, his dad Swiss-French, his mum German, Roget grew up amongst the excitement of his parents’ French restaurant, surrounded

by European food culture and being the kid “falling asleep under the tables at the end of the night while his parents finished washing the dishes.”

“A chef through and through”, as Catherine describes him, Roget has worked in many restaurants over the years.

Before moving back to Esperance, Catherine and Roget were witnessing a resurgence of French food in Melbourne, which was ideal for Roget as he landed a job in a great French restaurant. Sadly, this was just before COVID hit.

After a few years of riding the COVID rollercoaster, a few circumstances coincided, and the pair moved from Melbourne to Esperance in late 2021.

“When we moved back from Melbourne, we really felt like there was a lot of opportunity,” they say. Roget has always had a dream of opening his own small bistro that allows him to draw on his traditional French training – a place open at night, with small numbers and not many dishes, that he perfects. “That’s been his vision for a number of years, but we didn’t see this happening anytime soon.”

That was until they met up with Paul McKay, who had worked with Catherine and Roget in the past at the Taylor Street Tea Rooms and other spots around town. “When we caught up with Paul, we chatted about the gap in market and opening hours around town, and just started dreaming, and from there the visions and ideas started to appear,” recalls Catherine.

Roget says they’re facing all of the usual challenges that come with business and hospitality – the logistics of business and the behind the scenes, COVID mandates and restrictions, storage, and difficulty in finding staff. But they’re figuring it out, and couldn’t be more grateful for the community support that has brought the “buzz” through the doors since they first opened.

When asked what the secret to French food is – “Local produce, and butter. French butter of the best quality, and an unbelievable amount of it,” says Roget. If you aren’t afraid of butter, this is the place to be. And even if you are, they have drool-worthy vegan options, too. What a win!

World-Renowned Sound Guitar Leads Ingrid to Esperance WORDS HANNAH SIEMER P H O TO G R A P H Y R O S I E H E N D E R S O N

When Ingrid Riollot was 8 years old, a music shop opened in her hometown of Charolles, a small town in Burgundy in the centre of France. Ingrid was ecstatic – she wanted to learn to play rock and roll, and the shop had its very own guitar teacher. However, the teacher only taught classical guitar. Little did young Ingrid know, that teacher would set the trajectory for her future. “She was amazing,” Ingrid says of her first guitar teacher. “She was so wonderful that I never learned the electric guitar!”

By the age of 11, Ingrid was living away from home, studying classical guitar at the National Conservatory of Music in Lyon, one of France’s largest cities. It was the first stop on Ingrid’s journey to fulfilling her dream of becoming an international performer, a dream she lives out today. Ingrid has studied, taught, and performed all over the world, travelling throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, sharing her passion for the craft along the way.

While Ingrid dreamt of performing internationally, she never in a million years dreamt that she would find herself living in Esperance. In 2015, Ingrid arrived in town to collect a Smallman guitar, handmade by local Greg Smallman and his sons, Damon and Kym. It was something she had longed for since she was a child. “I saw a BBC documentary about Australian-born John Williams, who is one of the most famous classical guitarists on the planet, and he was playing on a Smallman guitar,” Ingrid says. “Since I saw this fantastic video, I always wanted to have one of these guitars.”

On the same visit to collect her guitar, Ingrid met her now husband. Four years later, Ingrid and her daughter Alice, 12, relocated to Esperance permanently. “I picked up my guitar and met the man of my life,” Ingrid smiles. “I never thought I would live outside of Europe, so to end up on the other side of the world, that was a big surprise.”

Ingrid’s incredible career has taken her around the world. She’s performed in Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Italy, Switzerland, and Spain, to name just a few, and taught in numerous countries, including Thailand, Canada, and Peru. However, like many artists, Ingrid’s international touring ground to halt at the onset of COVID-19. She took the opportunity to record a solo album, My Guitar, which was 100 per cent recorded, mixed, mastered and produced in Esperance.

On April 30, Ingrid will perform at the Esperance Civic Centre as part of French Week. It is only Ingrid’s third public performance in Esperance. She says it is a unique opportunity to experience the magic of the classical guitar, a craft not well known in Australia. “I enjoy showing an audience what you can do with a guitar,” Ingrid says. “The guitar is a beautiful instrument. It’s something very intimate, and like a little orchestra all by itself. It’s an instrument that can talk to any one of us.”

What Ingrid enjoys most about performing is sharing her passion for classical guitar with an audience. It’s a passion that requires an intense dedication – Ingrid practices for a minimum of four hours every day, and exercises for another two. She loves to run, dive, and ride her pushbike, activities that ensure she stays on

top of her game. “It’s a lot of training each day if you want to keep a high level,” Ingrid says.

“I try to stay fit and healthy because touring is exhausting.”

As the COVID fog lifts, Ingrid looks forward to performing again, both in Australia and overseas. She’s scheduled to play in Albania in June and Perth in August, and hopes to soon take a trip back to France to visit family.

While there are a few things Ingrid misses about France, like good cheese and skiing in the winter, Ingrid is proud to now call Esperance home. Ingrid and daughter Alice agree that the pace of life is much slower here than in France, which they both enjoy. “It’s very calm,” Ingrid says. “It’s very resting because when you are touring, it’s really tiring, so it’s good to settle down.”

It’s getting a little chilly around here, so we’ve begun to delve into some of our favourite autumn and winter adventures. Many of these lie on the side of town renowned for its rivers and rugged rocky headlands, scrubby bushlands, inland estuaries, and crashing waves. There’s something moody about out west, a moodiness that so aptly suits the season. This month, we ventured out to an often overlooked favourite, Stokes National Park.

Covering an area of 10,667 hectares, Stokes National Park is 80 kilometres west of town and home to some beaut spots, including Stokes Inlet, Moirs Homestead, and Skippy Rocks. A great area to explore on a day trip or while camping, we recommend you fuel up, rug up, throw on the boots, fill the thermos, pack a few fishing rods, and get out there. Nature works wonders on beating those cold weather, overcast sky blues, as does the adrenaline of being in the great outdoors. And even if you do get a little bit wet or windblown, you’ll never regret getting out and exploring (just be sure to pack a change of clothes in case!).

Stokes Inlet

Turning off the highway and following a gravel road in, you’ll find yourself at the 14 kilometre inlet, bordered by beaches and rocky headlands, and backed by sand dunes. This area has an amazing history of evolution, evident in the fossils found in the limestone and the ancient palm trees dotted around the place.

The shorelines are fringed with paperbark trees and pelicans that loiter in the hope of a leftover feed.

There’s something about paperbark trees - the many layers of bark like a book filled with many a story and sight captured over its years. Pelicans are also pretty cool, and we don’t see them that often down here.

Stokes Inlet is great for fishing and birdwatching, with a spot to launch the tinny and kayaks, and two large sheltered picnic areas in the day use area, complete with barbecues and long-drop dunnies. Park up here and enjoy a picnic lunch while the kids are greeting the pelicans or throwing a line. Some of the fish species rumoured to bite around the inlet include the Black Bream, Australian Salmon, King George Whiting, and Mullet. If you’re camping, Benwenerup Campground is just up the track, complete with all of the facilities, located on the western side of Stokes Inlet in a peaceful bush setting along the edge of the inlet.

If you’re into bushwalking, the Stokes Heritage Trail is also in this spot, and you can start from either the campgrounds or the day use area. The trail is an easy 1.5 kilometres, offering views of the inlet, wildflowers and birds. If you’re after a little more huff and puff, the Stokes Heritage Trail Loop is a moderate 1.5 kilometre track, continuing from the Heritage Trail car park and climbing to a limestone ridge with an expansive vista. For great views of the paperparks and birds, walk from the day use area to the mouth of the inlet, an easy 3.5 kilometres each way. This track is only useable when estuary levels are low, as it skirts the edge of the inlet. ⟶

Young River You’ll find a little track back on the main Stokes Inlet road that takes you to Young River, a tranquil riverside spot below the yate trees alongside the winding pools of Young River that is perfect for fishing and birdwatching and catching some zen. The track is often closed in wet conditions, and it is 4WD only. There is no camping here but camping at Benwenerup isn’t far away.

Moirs Homestead Down Farrells Road and a 4x4 track that requires a bit of high clearance, you can find the historical ruins of Moirs Homestead. Standing alongside an old Moreton Bay fig tree, the limestone walls and rusted sheets of tin and machinery date back to the 1800s when this was once a bustling homestead.

The history of Moirs is interesting and worth looking into, but the short of it is that in 1873, Alexander and John Moir were granted a lease of 14,000 acres around Stokes Inlet.

They established a homestead on the eastern shore of the inlet where they grazed sheep through the coastal vegetation and shipped their wool from a nearby cove.

Skippy Rocks Further along the coast, down a 4x4 track, lies a stunning little bay surrounded by scrub with a small campground nestled in the bush that operates on a first come first served basis. If you’ve been before, you may remember camp host Roy, and if you’re yet to go, make sure you say g’day to him if he’s there! Enjoy a walk around the headland, and a pick through the shells on the beach.

There’s much more to this incredible national park, but this should give you somewhere to start - now you’ve just got to get out there and find the rest of the magic for yourself! All the tracks, with the exception of Stokes Inlet and the Benwenerup campground area, are 4x4, with sandy tracks that can get you, so follow those signs and guidelines. And pack your own drinking water as the water at camp and day use areas isn’t suitable for drinking. As always, be sensible when climbing rocks and along the water's edge. When wet, those black rocks are killer, literally.

Club 75 returns to the Cannery Arts Centre with our first event for 2022 set to fall in the main gallery on Saturday 21 May. The weekend will be a large one at the Cannery, with an Open Mic on May 20 programmed to take advantage of a halfway decorated gallery space. Further adding to a packed weekend will be a songwriting workshop with Finn Pearson on May 21 from 1pm - 2pm, free to attend, and supported by WAM and Act Belong Commit. Club 75 joined our roster of events back

in 2018, and has become a popular element of Esperance’s live music calendar. Our goal was to create an intimate space for artists to share their original compositions, where they could truly tell their stories and connect with an engaged audience.

If you are yet to experience a Club 75 event, expect a tastefully lit space, luxurious couches, refined sounds, and a quality social setting.

Fremantle-based Finn Pearson is set to headline, with Hayden Davies of Perth publication Pilerats noting him as “one of the state’s most exciting new additions in the past two years, drawing upon rich lyricism and smart musicianship to create potent bursts of folk, alt-country and indie.” Finn will be joined by a quality local line up of musos. Festival Of Small Halls rolls into the Esperance Civic Centre on Saturday 7 May, bringing with it two of WA’s finest acts, duo Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse, together with Fremantle’s Jack Davies. Festival of Small Halls has provided a successful touring model over the past eight years, presented by Woodfordia Inc, the production team behind Queensland’s iconic Woodford Folk Festival. ME E T T H E ART I ST

Marcia Leonard Marcia Leonard is a mixed media artist who uses painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography to explore the ideas and techniques involved in the process of making art. Growing up in Cobar, outback New South Wales, Marcia now enjoys the coastal lifestyle in Esperance. This is reflected in her work, which is currently on display at the Cannery Arts Centre in Three Artists.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I am inspired by the natural world, storytelling, and other artists. The unique beauty and wildness of the Australian landscape combined with stories provided by movies, books, cultural experiences, history and imagination are constant sources of inspiration for me. The process of making art is also important. When I am working on a piece, it develops through the media that I am using. I strive to be challenged by every piece of work I create.

Do you have any formal training?

I have a BA in Visual Arts from the University of New South Wales and a postgraduate degree in Visual Arts from the Victorian College of Arts in Melbourne. But mostly I learn by making work. Each piece teaches me, especially the ones that I struggle with.

Your work is currently on display at the Cannery Arts Centre in Three Artists. How did this collaboration come about?

I have known Tammy Andrews for a while, and we wanted to work towards an exhibition of local work at the Cannery. Tammy suggested Patrick McCarthy, whose work I was familiar with, and it developed from there.

The three of you have very different styles. How do your works complement each other?

I think we are all interested in the natural environment and making artwork that expresses the beauty and wonder of it. However, each of us has a different interpretation and interaction with nature, and this is what makes the works fit together.

You’re a Visual Art teacher at EACS. What do you enjoy about the role?

I really enjoy working with my students. They can have amazing ideas and to be able to help them develop their techniques and knowledge about art making and art is pleasing.

Do you believe there is artistic potential in every student?

I think we are all creative, we just need to find our medium and believe in ourselves. I think ‘medium’ can refer to anything that we love to do and express who we are through it, such as music, dancing, sport, and cooking.

What do you enjoy about living in Esperance?

The beauty of wilderness, the ocean, and the beaches. I have a Greek background so I think I must have a genetic link to the sea. The people who live in Esperance also make it a good place to live. I like the community here and feel that it’s a great balance of alternative culture and authenticity.

ARTS & CULTURE Festival of Smal l Hal ls Heads to Esp erance The Festival of Small Halls is a series of tours that aims to bring the best folk and contemporary acoustic music to small towns around Australia. While the festival has been running for eight years, 2022 is the first year that the tour will visit Western Australia. The Autumn Tour will feature two Western Australian acts, award winning folk duo Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse and singer songwriter Jack Davies, and will travel to 14 regional towns throughout the state. Presented by Woodfordia Inc, the Small Halls Autumn Tour is the 27th edition of this much-loved regional tour.

According to Producer Eleanor Rigden, the purpose of the festival is to bring the highest quality of musicians to small towns eager to be entertained by talented and engaging musical acts.

Now returning to a solo career, Jack is well known for his witty and soulful songs, as well as the way that he weaves storytelling and spoken word into his performances. He is looking forward to the chance to try out his new songs and jokes on audiences around Western Australia.

INTERVIEWED BY KYRON SMITHSON

A few years back, Tai Pirangi sent me through a number of vocal recordings. Tai had grabbed a snapshot of some exceptionally heavy vocals, sprung from the main man himself. I have always been fascinated by how metal vocalists first find the guttural growl or scream that is so important to the genre, and then how they maintain the intensity over a song, a show, or a bloody lifetime. Driven to take his love of the dark side of music further, Tai has recently collaborated with a number of musicians to bring his vision to life. His first single ‘Alchemy’ was released under the artist name Seventide in late February. For lack of a better word, it is brutal. You can check the tune out now on all your favourite streaming services.

With follow-up single ‘Mind Blank’ set to be released on Friday 13 May, I thought it was high time to catch up with Tai for the Tide.

Thanks so much for joining us, Tai. I must say, it's refreshing to see a local lad chasing after some heavy sounds. What was the pivotal experience that drove your love for heavy music?

I’d have to say at 15 years old when me and a few good mates went to Soundwave Festival 2011 in Perth. It was an unforgettable experience that sparked the start of many years of going to festivals and gigs.

When did you discover your ability for heavy vocals?

I always tried to do it but always sucked at it. Everyone sings in the car, whether you're good or bad, so that's just what I did. It was probably four or five years ago when I realised I could actually sorta do it and from there I just got better and better until I felt like I was good enough to warrant recording some stuff.

Are there any techniques you use to practise and refine your output?

There are a couple of different techniques I use to produce different sounds. When I’m going low with my vocals I’m pushing air out from my diaphragm, which is using the false chords in my throat, and for my higher pitched vocals, I’m pushing air from my lungs, which is using my vocal chords.

My understanding is that you have collaborated online with various musicians to develop the music for your tracks, then writing and layering the vocals. Are you able to give some insight into the process?

I came across a guy on Instagram from Perth who writes a lot of music. One day he posted a video of himself playing this really heavy guitar riff and I just thought to myself, “I have to hit this guy up.” He sent me a few instrumentals to listen to and I ended up paying him for the rights to two of them that I liked, one of which is where my upcoming release ‘Mind Blank’ came from. For my song ‘Alchemy’ I actually recorded all the vocals solo to a click track first then FaceTimed him to explain what I had in mind for the music and he nailed it. I went through a similar process with a producer from the US for a couple other songs I’m currently working on.

Can you give us a run down on the lyrical content of the new track?

It starts off with some spoken word, which is supposed to represent me thinking to myself or perhaps talking out

loud to myself, and then it talks about reminiscing on the times when we were young and innocent and how time felt like it went forever. Then it talks about wanting to escape my thoughts and block out all the noise that goes on up there. They are deep lyrics but it’s what I was feeling at the time when I wrote them, almost two years ago now.

If you could support any act, who would it be?

It would have to be Parkway Drive. Their live shows are next level. A spectacle.

A sight to behold. When they come back to Australia, I’ll be seeing them no matter what!

How did you come up with the artist name ‘Seventide’ to release music under?

Seven is my favourite number and ‘tide’ sounds close enough to ‘Tai’ so I just combined those two things into one word.

The Colourful Characters Keeping Kids Safe WORDS KARLI FLORISSON

What do a playful platypus, an adventurous possum, and a curious galah have to do with digital technology and safety in the online world? For local children’s author Kim Maslin, these colourful characters and their friends are an important tool for teaching kids about online safety in a fun and engaging way.

This month, Kim celebrates five years since the release of her first book, The Tweeting Galah. The book follows the adventures of a galah, a bilby, a clownfish, and a platypus who all learn something new about online safety. Kim is a firm believer in using stories to teach these important messages, and her vibrant characters with their fun adventures are designed to attract children’s attention. Since The Tweeting Galah was first published, Kim has published three more books in the series, including The Zooming Owl, which was published at the start of the pandemic and aims to teach children about online learning.

Kim’s characters and books have taken her in directions that she didn’t anticipate, including the opportunity to present workshops and readings around the region.

The series has particularly resonated with primary school teachers, who have used the books as a resource when teaching about online safety in the classroom.

Kim has had two of her books translated into French, and in addition to the print editions, all titles in the series are now available as e-books. In another exciting development, Martin McGauran from Inform & Empower, a trusted e-safety provider, has converted Kim’s books into live performances, using the characters to teach children important safety messages during his virtual shows.

As well as writing, Kim has an interest in the craft of making felt, offering another way to bring her characters to life outside of the books. Kim has created a set of finger puppets based on the characters in The Little Possum Who Looked Up using her own handmade felt, with the help of local artist Myrtle & Twine. The set of puppets are available to purchase in a box that doubles as a background scene for the puppets. Kim has turned this newfound passion for felting into another opportunity to teach, too. She recently presented a workshop at the Cannery Arts Centre, along with Myrtle & Twine’s Danielle Edwards, creating finger puppets inspired by The Little Possum.

Kim’s books demonstrate her ability to use the power of story to convey an important message. She’s grateful that her books have been so well received, particularly by the Esperance community, who have supported both the books and the message. Esperance Community Arts, the Cannery Arts Centre, and the Esperance Public Library have all supported Kim to share her message.

Seeing people buy, read and share her work fulfils a lifelong ambition of Kim’s. “It’s always been a dream of mine to be a writer,” she says.

Kim’s top tips for online safety: 1. Keep it PG Check the age guidelines of apps and games, and set boundaries for use (no device in the bedroom!).

2. Be a role model Want your child to have a healthy, balanced relationship with technology? It starts with you, and your digital habits!

3. Talk openly, talk often Normalise talking about your child’s online activities, so that if/when something happens they feel comfortable talking to you about it.

4. Don’t feel so guilty!

It’s okay for your child to enjoy time with technology! It offers opportunities for creativity, communication and downtime. It’s all about balance.

Despite the success of the books, Kim has no plans to slow down. Instead, she has commenced a PhD through Curtin University, funded by the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child, eager to learn more about children, creativity, and online learning.

Until the end of June, Kim is using 100 per cent of her profits from website sales of her books to purchase UNICEF’s School-in-a-Box packs. She was inspired to do this when she was researching the impact of COVID on access to education. The war in Ukraine also made Kim feel like she wanted to do something practical to help, and she decided that UNICEF’s School-in-a-Box, which provides much needed school supplies to children in areas impacted by conflict or crisis, would be the perfect cause to support.

Esperance Home Care

For the many clients who rely on Esperance Home Care, the service is an incredible source of support and care.

The organisation was first established in 1988 by a group of concerned community members with a desire to see a local nursing home built in Esperance. In response to a request for funding, the Government wanted to see a community-based home care organisation in operation in Esperance before it would consider funding a nursing home. This led to the establishment of the Esperance Home and Community Care Advisory Committee Council, under the guidance and financial management support of the Esperance Shire Council. From humble beginnings, starting out with just three staff, two of whom only worked part time, Esperance Home Care has grown to a much-loved organisation supporting 400 elderly or disabled people to live independently in their own homes.

These days, Esperance Home Care has a dedicated facility on Black Street, and employs 51 people.

They provide a wide range of services to help their clients live independently, including housekeeping, personal care, medication support, transport to appointments, and gardening. One important service provided by the organisation is a meal support service, ensuring that clients have hot, nutritious meals. These ‘meals on wheels’ are cooked daily in the Esperance Home Care kitchen, and delivered by a group of dedicated and caring volunteers. Another vital service that the organisation provides is community access. This includes organising a range of different activities and social outings, as well as transport for the clients. The social program provided by Home Care is made possible by the support of dedicated volunteers.

Esperance Home Care is dedicated to the principles of delivering quality care that treats clients with respect and dignity. The level of care each client receives is tailored to their individual needs, and Home Care staff work hard to make sure clients can maintain independence and autonomy at home for as long as possible. It’s a rewarding job. “I feel more connected to community,” one Community Support worker says. “It’s surprising how many farmers and Kalgoorlie residents retire to Esperance, and they have stories going back 70 to 80 years. I love hearing them talk about when they were younger and I love helping them stay at home so they don’t have to go to a nursing home.

That means a lot to me, and a lot to our clients.”

For Community Support staff, working at the service provides a range of benefits. There are no special qualifications required to work at Home Care, and full training is provided to suitable workers. Staff are also supported on the job by on-staff nurses, coordinators, and other experienced workers. The hours are flexible, and can be adjusted to suit the staff member’s needs. The work day is usually varied, with staff deliberately given a range of different activities to suit their abilities and skills.

More significantly, staff find the work meaningful and rewarding, knowing that they are helping to care for and support vulnerable and elderly members of our community. The Evolution of

Esperance Port KARLI FLORISSON

Shipping has been vital to the survival and success of the town since the first European settlers arrived in the area. However, until 1965, Esperance did not have a land-backed berth for the ships that came and went through the busy harbour.

The early days

In the late 19th century, the cutters that arrived, bringing mail and supplies, and taking away the wool clip, were usually unloaded onto smaller boats that could come into the Dempsters’ Jetty, a small landing near the site of the current day port. By 1935, the Esperance Deepwater Jetty was completed at Hannett Point, now known as the Jetty Headland. This jetty, which became known as the New Jetty, came in at just over 870 metres long, and cost £70,000 to build. Later known as the Tanker Jetty, as it was used to berth tankers which brought oil to town, a bulk fuel storage tank was installed in 1937, and a pipeline ran down the length of the jetty to the storage facility.

In the 1950s, land development in the Esperance region was revolutionised. With a new understanding of using trace minerals and fertilisers to transform the region’s sandy soils into productive farmland, the land around Esperance was in high demand. An influx of American and eastern states investment into the area led to a dramatic increase in the number of farms. From the 40 farms recorded in the region in 1953, rapid clearing and development meant there were 394 occupied farms in the area by 1961. Of course, this meant a huge increase in grain and wool being shipped out from Esperance, and it soon became apparent that the Tanker Jetty would not be able to meet the shipping needs of the town.

In 1961, a proposal was prepared for a new harbour in the Esperance Bay, protected by a breakwater, in the reclaimed shoreline under Dempster Head. The proposal received Government approval, and work began on the project in 1962. The breakwater was made using 321,000 tons of stone, quarried directly from Dempster Head.

A 634-foot steel and concrete berth was constructed

by Perth’s John Holland Construction. The channel into the port was dredged to a depth of nearly 10 metres.

cost a total of £1,337,000. The new Port was opened by WA Premier David Brand. The first ship to use the new wharf was the Cape Wrath, a 10,000-ton ship carrying phosphate rock. In those early days, you could fish from the wharf, and even occasionally take a peek on board ships that were docked at the port. Even after the construction of the new port, petroleum products were still unloaded at the Tanker Jetty, as it was considered too costly to move the storage tanks and pipelines.

The last tanker to unload at the Tanker Jetty, the BP Enterprise, was in 1977, after which the operations were moved to the port.

The Esperance Port Authority was established in 1968, with Ralph Bower appointed as the inaugural chairperson.

The second berth at the Esperance Port was opened in 1972. The entry channel to the port was dredged deeper in 1988, to a depth of 12.8 metres. The results of this were seen immediately, with bigger ships such as the Iran Saeidi able to dock at the Port, receiving a record cargo of 39,375 tons of wheat. Don McKenzie used his fishing boat Lilly as the Port’s first tugboat. New administrative offices were constructed for the Port in 1984 and at the same time, the surrounding area was turned into the Port Authority Park. A large sailing ship anchor, found when dredging the harbour, was put on display at the newly opened park. In 1987, the town’s old hospital was moved to a site near the port, where it was used as offices for the port until 1989, when the hospital was converted into the Taylor Street Tea Rooms.

Over the years, the Port has been used for the export and import of a variety of commodities, including our biggest exports, wheat, nickel, and iron ore. Exports through the port have steadily increased over the years, with CBH improving their grain export terminal at the port, and a $54 million upgrade to the Port in 2002. This gave Berth 3 at the port a length of 230 metres, and a depth of 19.6 metres, making the Esperance Port the deepest in southern Australia. The port has not been without its issues and controversies. In 1987, the Australian Spirit collided with the wharf, causing more than $2 million damage. Some exports through the port have also caused controversy and environmental damage, such as lead exports, which caused widespread lead contamination through the town in 2007. A town cleanup, paid for by lead exporter Magellan Metals, was conducted in 2008.

In 2014, the Albany, Bunbury, and Esperance Ports were amalgamated to form the Southern Ports Authority.

Today, the Esperance Port has world class facilities, and welcomes around 200 ships every year.

Chilli & Feta Scrambled Eggs

The best way to treat Mum this Mother’s Day is with breakfast in bed. Don’t forget to serve with a good cup of coffee or fresh OJ and a flower handpicked from the garden.

5-6 free range eggs ¼ cup Persian feta ¼ cup milk ¼ tsp chilli flakes 50g butter 2 thick slices of sourdough bread Salt & pepper 2 spring onions, finely sliced ½ cup freshly chopped coriander or parsley Chilli oil, for serving

In a medium bowl, crack the eggs and add the feta, milk, chilli flakes and half the spring onion.

Add the butter to a medium frying pan over a medium heat. Once it has almost melted, add the egg mixture. Slowly pull the edges into the centre with a spatula. Repeat this until the eggs no longer spill out at the edges and the egg looks cooked. Remove from the heat.

3.

Toast and generously butter your sourdough. Grab two plates, pop a slice on each, and divide the egg mixture evenly over the toast.

4.

Add a good pinch of salt and pepper and garnish with the remaining spring onions, coriander and chilli oil to your (or your mum’s!) liking.

Bad memories will try to work their way into your mind in the coming weeks. Where do they come from, and why do they appear out of the blue? The lack of control over when and where they turn up is frustrating, but you can manage your feelings by focussing on the present. Occupy yourself with something hands-on and think about nothing but the task at hand, then watch these memories fly out the window as quickly as they came in.

BUSH BANTER Become a Citizen Scientist One of the most common questions people ask me is, “How can I get more involved in science of the natural world?” Well, there are some amazing groups right here in Esperance, and other citizen science programmes more broadly throughout the state. I’ve put a list together below, and hope you check some of them out!

Espera nce Bird Obs e r v e r s G ro u p The Esperance Bird Observers Group is an enthusiastic group of locals who are interested in bird life. They have monthly outings to local sites on the second Sunday of the month and participate in the annual National Shorebird and Hooded Plover surveys, and the Black Cockatoo survey each year. They also support bird education activities and excursions with local schools.

Espera nce W ildf l owe r S o c i e t y A group aimed at the appreciation, exploration and conservation of Esperance’s unique flora. Meeting on the third Monday of the month, they assist in the maintenance of the Esperance Herbarium and have a monthly excursion to unique locations. If you’re interested in joining, flick an email to espwildflower@ gmail.com. i Na t ura lis t An online identification platform for all things biological.

Users post images of flora, fauna, fungi and other biota, either with an identification or a request from other users to identify. It’s an enormous, global online community that assists in helping others learn the art of identification and record the diversity of places incidentally. You’d be surprised at how many records are around Esperance!

DP IRD’s My Pe s t G uide R e p o r te r a p p Ever wondered what a random insect is at the beach or in the bush? Or the weird bumps on a gum tree? Well, DPIRD manage an app called ‘MyPestGuide Reporter’ where you can submit a photo, with details like location and a description, and professionals reply with what it is.

Cool! This app has also been critical at monitoring risky pests likely to invade WA such as myrtle rust, a fungal disease that attacks our Eucalypts.

B irdL ife a nd B irdDa ta BirdData is an app and online community of observations and records of our feathered friends. Managed and run

by Bird Life Australia, it’s an amazing data collecting platform for researchers to see the movement of species, preferred habitat and if sightings/numbers/records of certain species are changing with climate change. It’s easy to register and login, so get busy adding your records of birds in the backyard, bush, and at the beach!

Fro g ID a p p The WA Museum has an app especially for Frogs, oh yes! It has a wealth of information, such as guides to identifications, a profile on different species, and recordings of frog calls. You can add your own observations through the app. On the WA Museum website it’s stated that, “Our frogs are under threat from habitat loss, disease and climate change. Taking part in FrogID will help provide our scientists with valuable data for the protection and conservation of frogs.”

01 It was announced that a new

headspace centre will open in the first half of next year, providing an increased range of mental health services for locals aged 12 to 25.

Hope Community Services, which currently operates headspace’s satellite service in Esperance, have been awarded the contract to run the new centre. Funded by the Federal Government, the centre will offer a range of services relating to mental, physical, and sexual health, work and study, and alcohol and drugs.

West Australian Music (WAM) released Demos from the Ngaanyatjarra Lands and Esperance, the end result of its 2021 Regional Recording Project.

Musicians from Esperance and Warburton were given the opportunity to record with some of the state’s top producers and sound engineers, creating a compilation of music reflective of each region. The Esperance album was recorded at the Bijou Theatre in August last year and features nine local artists.

South Coast Natural Resource Management received more than $500,000 in Lotterywest funding to support environmental volunteering. The Albany-based organisation will use the funding to launch its new Enviro-Experiences program, which will give people handson conservation and cultural experiences to encourage

environmental volunteering. Two coordinators will be employed to manage the program, one in Albany and one in Esperance.

Esperance Care Services (ECS) were announced as a finalist in the State Government’s 2022 WasteSorted Awards, in the ‘Waste Management’ category. The local not-forprofit organisation were nominated for their handling of unwanted clothing, with leftover donations pressed into wool bales and transported to Perth recycling centre, Eco Pay It Forward. ECS have donated 52 tonnes of clothing since March last year. The winner will be announced on May 19.

Roads Program The month of March was a dry one for all the wards. Along with repairing roads, the team have been doing backslopes and the off-shoot drains. Merivale Road has become a constant maintenance grading job, needing good moisture content to be able to form/repair the road surface. East Ward Grading Works – Merivale Road, Daniels Road, Jims Oven Road, Orleans Bay Road, Kettle Road, Ridgelands Road, Howick Road and Coolinup Road. North Ward have completed road repairs before grading Bette Road, Quast Road, Burnside Road, Swann Road, Fagan Road and Sunrise Hill. West Ward have graded and repaired Clare Road, River Road, Oldfields Road, Farmers Road, Munglinup Beach, Springdale Road and Rawlinson Road. The Central Ward done grading and repairs on Plowmans Road, Speddingup WE have ARE OPEN...
