March brings with it International Women’s Day (IWD). The fight for gender equality has made significant progress in recent decades, however this date remains an important one for women and girls around the world. In recognition of IWD, we met with four local women smashing the glass ceiling in industries that have traditionally been male dominated. Read their stories on page 6.

Another person kicking goals in our community is Cassie Doherty, owner of CG Pinoy Shop. The Filipino store, jam-packed with supplies for Asian cooking, recently moved from a small space on Dempster Street to a much larger store on Pink Lake Road.

It’s thanks to the support of the community that Cassie has been able to grow the business. Check it out on page 14 and then head to the shop!

We also caught up with the lovely ladies of Esperance Walking Group, which turns 27 this month. This is a great group of gals who meet twice a week to walk for an hour, helping them maintain their physical and mental wellbeing. They’re hard to miss in their bright blue polos, so next time you pass them, give them a wave!

A Little Walk from Perth W O R D S & P H O TO G R A P H Y R O S I E H E N D E R S O N

He throws off his dusty shoes and dives into the ocean on the Esperance Foreshore, with an entourage of supporters cheering him on from the shoreline. Jarrad Casey has just spent the last 17 days walking over 700 kilometres from Perth to Esperance, so this swim must be one of the best swims of his life. He floats on his back for a while, throwing his hands in the air as he walks out of the water. We cheer again and he’s handed a cold beer.

This isn’t Jarrad’s first time walking from Perth to Esperance. He attempted it 10 years ago but it “didn’t work out that well,” he says.

“I’d had this crazy dream about walking home and left four days later, completely unprepared. But ever since, it’s something I’ve always wanted to accomplish and finish for myself.” This time around, he embarked on the walk to get people talking about mental health and raise money for Beyond Blue while at it.

So far, Jarrad’s fundraised over $13,000 for Beyond Blue, with the original goal of $1000 long left behind in his dust. This money will

fund hundreds of calls to Beyond Blue’s helpline, from people all over Australia that are in need of help and support. He says that the money was never the main goal. Instead, it was about getting people talking, and to show that it’s okay to talk about mental health, especially for young males. “You can feel really alone in it - and like no one else understands - but that’s not the case,” Jarrad says. “This walk just goes to show how many people understand it and feel it, and know that it is important to acknowledge that you do feel crap sometimes. It’s normal. You’re not weak or weird.”

The biggest challenges that Jarrad faced on the walk was video blogging and a case of shin splints. Every day Jarrad recorded and shared a video to his Instagram, recapping his day and talking about the mental and physical challenges he’d faced while walking.

“The prospect of putting myself and my mental health out there was a big thing for me, and something that did make me really anxious,” Jarrad says. “But I think with anxiety, you’ve got to realise that your comfort zone isn’t the best place to be sometimes - sometimes you have to take that leap of faith and push yourself to be in uncomfortable positions, and from there things become easier.”

Jarrad says the biggest physical challenge on the trip was a bad case of shin splints. “Walking 400 kilometres with shin splints was not pleasant. But throwing in the towel wasn’t an option for me,” he says. “I just kept saying to myself - if I want to throw in the towel, the towel’s at home, so I’ll have to walk home to get the towel, before I can throw it in.” An extra rest day in Lake Grace and some ice bathing and elevation helped him make it through the remaining kilometres.

Jarrad says he couldn’t have done it without the community support. “I’m still kind of speechless,” he says. “My mates and family were amazing obviously, but the larger community support was unreal - for me and the fundraiser. All of the honks, cold bottles of water, check-ins and waves really help you get through those down points.” He also thanks all the truckies for steering clear of his toes.

Jarrad thinks one of the most memorable experiences on the walk was talking to the Newdegate school kids, after the school’s principal Judy organised the kids to come out as he was walking through town. He chatted with the kids about what he was doing and why, and Jarrad says it was “really special and hopeful to see kids that young being aware of mental health and the importance of talking about your emotions.”

Jarrad’s not sure how he feels about being called inspirational. “It’s definitely still sinking in, but I am proud of myself,” he says. “It’s been a long dream, and I think the walking shoes will be parked up for a bit now, but I’ll be focused on moving forwards and keeping up the positive mentality.”

On March 8, we recognise International Women’s Day, celebrating how far we’ve come in the pursuit of gender equality and acknowledging how far we have to go. This year’s theme is ‘Break the Bias’, encouraging us to imagine a world free of gender bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. Esperance is brimming with women breaking the mould in the workplace, challenging gender stereotypes and stepping up to the plate in a range of traditionally maledominated industries. In honour of International Women’s Day, we spoke with four of these women about what they do and why they love it.

Stacey Webster R OAD TR AIN DR IVER When Stacey Webster began driving road trains 15 years ago, she was as excited as she was terrified.

“We have more to prove than men when we are first starting out,” Stacey says of females in the industry.

“It takes a long time to earn the respect of some male drivers.” Despite the challenge, it wasn’t long before Stacey knew she had found her passion.

For the last year, Stacey has driven a C Train for Freight Lines Group (FLG). She loves the freedom of the road, which allows her the opportunity to “do a bit of soul searching.” Stacey spends seven days away from home at a time, working early mornings and late nights, and sleeping in her truck. She then has seven days off to spend quality time with her two children. “I’m the perfect example that us women can have it all,” Stacey says. “I wouldn’t change my life for anything else.”

Stacey is one of two female C Train drivers working out of FLG’s Esperance branch. While Stacey says women need to be thick skinned to work in the industry, she adds that it’s an extremely rewarding and empowering job that she actively encourages other women to try. “If I come across like-minded women that aren’t in this industry, I get them out with me in my truck so they can see what it’s all about,” she says.

As a kid, Stacey loved being outside. Driving offers her endless landscapes, and uninterrupted views of countless sunrises and sunsets. “My teacher said I would never make a living staring out of a window,” Stacey says. “I showed them!”

Brooke Mackenzie TUG M AS TER Brooke Mackenzie is the fourth generation to work for Mackenzie Marine and Towage. Founded by her great-grandfather 50 years ago, the harbour towage business is now managed by her dad, Sean. “I’ve been on boats all my life and my whole family was involved in the business, so it was only natural for me to join,” the 26-year-old says. “I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Brooke began working on the tugs nine years ago, shortly after graduating from high school. She says the biggest challenge she faces at work is the constantly changing environment. “Shipping is very sporadic and can happen at all times of the day or night,” Brooke says. “What works and happens on one day may not be the same the next day.” Battling difficult weather conditions and towing ships of varying shapes and sizes are all part of the challenge, too, but are what Brooke says makes the job so interesting.

Just last month, Brooke completed her first solo ship movement, and she hopes to get back to TAFE this year to upgrade her qualifications, to allow her to drive a bigger vessel. There’s no place she’d rather be - even in the middle of winter, when it’s cold and windy with a massive swell, Brooke remains thankful that she gets to be on the water for work. Surrounded by encouragement, Brooke has never felt the need to prove herself to her colleagues. “I work with a pretty great bunch of guys that all want to see me succeed,” she says. “It also helps that I’m a bit of a tomboy and not scared to tell someone to bugger off if they think I can’t do something!” ⟶ 7 / ESPERANCE TIDE / MARCH 2022

Annabelle Marsh P LA NT OPE RAT OR As a kid, Annabelle Marsh would often ask her dad, owner of Chucky’s Earthworks, if she could go to work with him. Annabelle was fascinated with trucks and machines from a young age so, upon finishing Year 12, she knew exactly where she was headed. “It was a nobrainer when Dad asked me if I wanted a job with him,” Annabelle, 23, says. “It’s something that has always interested me.”

Annabelle now gets to work with trucks and machines every day. In addition to driving her own truck, a Mack appropriately named ‘Belle’s Rig’, Annabelle also operates a loader, mini digger, backhoe, excavator, and bobcat. Her job involves carting sand and digging holes, footings, and trenches, utilising her skills on each of these machines. “It’s not the same thing every day,” Annabelle says. “There’s always somewhere new to go, and you’re changing machines every day. It’s fun to learn them all and be out and about all the time.”

Despite her skills, Annabelle often encounters people who doubt her abilities. “Some old school people tend to give me a hard time and try to tell me how to do my job,” she says. “And some clients or colleagues have their doubts about me when I first show up, but they are soon put at ease when I start doing my job. I let my skills do the talking.” However, Annabelle says most people are incredibly supportive. Her dad is no exception. “He has taught me so much and just wants me to do the best job possible,” Annabelle says. “He is very supportive and encourages me to do the best I can.”

Hannah Vermeersch FAR M ER Just over a year ago, Hannah Vermeersch returned to her roots on the family farm. Hannah is the third generation to live and work on the farm, which was established by her grandparents in the early 1960s, after emigrating from Belgium. “I loved my childhood out here,” Hannah says. “I always knew that I wanted to have a go at farming.”

Hannah’s previous career is a far cry from agriculture. The 29-year-old spent a decade travelling the world as a professional rower, even making the 2012 Olympics, where she rowed in the Women’s Eight. After retiring from rowing, Hannah worked as a high school teacher, before deciding to have a go on the farm. “While I was rowing, I never got the chance to come home because it meant that my training would be sacrificed,” Hannah says. “Since moving back I've been enjoying my time here. Every day is different, and I have learnt so much.”

Hannah has witnessed an increasing number of women entering the agricultural industry. She says most neighbouring properties have female workers, or daughters following in their fathers’ footsteps. Hannah describes the industry as modern and exciting, requiring ongoing research and problem solving to improve farm practices. There’s an array of career pathways in the industry, too, with a variety of services and professions required to put a crop in every year. “It isn’t about just sitting in a tractor all day, there is so much more to it,” Hannah says. “It’s very exciting, and I think that as long as you enjoy it and it’s what you want to do, why does it matter if you are female or male?”

We’ve been a little preoccupied with the beautiful blues of the Esperance seascape lately so this month, we’re taking a couple of steps away from the shoreline and exploring a few inland adventures not too far from town. You might be surprised by the number of picnicking, bushwalking, and canoeing opportunities that lay right on our doorstep. For all our suggested activities, always take water, wear appropriate footwear, and be sun smart.

Helms Arboretum 7km north of town centre Helms Arboretum was established in the 1970s with the intention of researching which trees and plants would grow and do well in the Esperance region. This spot is a tree-lover, forest-frolicker, day dreamer, and botanist's dream. It’s the perfect spot to escape town for a good ol’ dose of tall trunks and green leaves.

You’ll find Helms Arboretum divided into two parts - a pine plantation and the arboretum.

With the bush pockets accessible by gravel road, it's perfect for exploring in your car but even better by foot. Park your car near the picnic area and either walk or ride your bike for an even better experience. It’s a great spot to indulge in photography and bird observing, and ideal for a picnic lunch or afternoon tea. It’s also really nice to just throw down a rug and lay there looking at the sky as the clouds float by above the trees.

Helms Arboretum is home to eucalyptus, melaleucas, casuarinas, acacias, and many exotic pines. During spring you’ll find spider orchids, cowslips, and leschenaultia, enamel and donkey orchids, plus banksia. During summer and often into the autumn, the place is ablaze with red flowering gums (one of our favourites!). ⟶

Woody Lake Wetlands 7km north of town centre Encompassing seven major lakes and more than 90 smaller lakes, the Lake Warden, Woody Lake and Mullet Lake Reserves are one of only a few wetlands in Western Australia that are recognised under the Ramsar Convention. These wetlands support a habitat of around 20,000 waterbirds, many of which call this place home from November to April, alongside an impressive range of other creatures.

You’ll find lots of great spots for picnics, bushwalking, fishing, and water skiing. There are also a couple of great trails to take to explore these wetlands: KEP WA RI WA L K TRA I L Nestled out of the wind, the 7 kilometre return trail meanders alongside Lake Wheatfield and Woody Lake. Kepwari is the local Aboriginal word for ‘place of moving water’ and this trail is designed to be an interactive learning experience with bird hides and seating along the way. The trail winds along under a canopy of banksias and over dune ridges, with views of the wetland systems and catchment surrounds.

WOODY L A K E C A N OE T R A I L One of the best ways to enjoy and explore the wetlands of Woody Lake is to paddle the marked trail through the winding changes and paperbark trees, passing pelicans, swans, ducks, and a range of other birds and wildlife. Access to the trail is via Windabout Lake boat ramp. The trail from Lake Wheatfield to Woody Lake Nature Reserve is 2.5 kilometres each way, Woody Lake to Lake Windabout is 3 kilometres each way, and Lake Wheatfield to Lake Windabout is 5.5 kilometres each way. Paddling conditions are at their best between August and November when water levels are at their highest, but you can give it a go anytime! While the water level isn’t at its highest during the summer and autumn months, you may spot some of the lakes’ annual visitors including sanderlings and green shanks.

Lake Monjingup 10km north of town centre Lake Monjingup is an ideal place for picnicking, bushwalking, and birdwatching. Out at the lake you’ll find a wooden boardwalk which meanders through the paperbarks, as well as an environmental centre providing information about the flora and fauna that call the area home. The Reserve is also complete with toilets and picnic tables, so it’s the perfect place to watch the (bird)world go by with a glass of bubbly in hand.

Dempster Head & Rotary Lookout Walk Trails 3km west of town centre Dempster Head is a wonderland, right in town. There are two walking trails that offer incredible views and a variety of beautiful flora. Both of them start at the Rotary Lookout and are marked along the way.

Walk 1, which is about 750 metres return and of moderate difficulty, is quite steep at the start and leads you down to a viewing platform and picnic table overlooking Lovers Cove. Walk 2 is a longer version, which is about 1.3 kilometres, taking you over exposed granite rock to the top of Dempster Head, overlooking West Beach. This is also one of our favourite spots to eat fish and chips and enjoy a bevvy as the sun goes down.

When Cassie Doherty first moved to Esperance, she really missed Filipino food, especially the highly popular dish, Adobo. To acquire the ingredients she needed to cook authentic Filipino food at home, she had to drive to Kalgoorlie or Albany to find an Asian grocer. With a large community of Filipinos living in town, Cassie knew that she wasn’t the only person longing for easier access to specialty ingredients. So, in September 2019, she took the plunge and opened a specialty food store, CG Pinoy Shop, in a small shop on Dempster Street.

Cassie estimates that there are around 50 Filipinos living in Esperance, and they often get together for social occasions and to share Filipino food. Cassie is from Mindanao, a large, tropical island with stunning beaches in the south of the Philippines. Cassie arrived in Esperance in 2008, after marrying an Australian.

Tragically, her husband died in a car accident in 2016, leaving Cassie with two young children. The local Filipino community supported her through this difficult time, as well as her friends at the Catholic Church she attends. These same friends supported her when she started the shop, which very quickly outgrew its small premises.

Initially, Cassie had planned to only stock Filipino food.

Before long, however, she had locals from Indonesian, Thai, and other backgrounds asking if she could source ingredients for them as well. Cassie started stocking a range of Asian ingredients, and let customers know that she could make special orders if requested. Pinoy now has a wide range of stock, selling everything from Asian spices and sauces, to fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen goods, and specialty drinks.

In December, the shop moved into a new, larger premises on Pink Lake Road. Cassie loves having more room for shelves and display areas, and a big stock room. In addition to Esperance locals, who have been very supportive, people come to buy supplies from Hopetoun, Ravensthorpe, and Norseman, too. “They’re all so happy to have found a shop that stocks Asian food,” Cassie says. Her goal for the shop has been to keep the shelves stocked with interesting food. She says that things like frozen spring rolls and dim sims are popular with locals, as well as noodles and sauces, seaweed snacks, and vegan and gluten free options.

Pinoy gets a delivery of fresh vegetables from Perth every Friday, and they have even begun supplying some local restaurants with various items, including fresh chillies and drinks. ⟶

While Pinoy has enjoyed great success since its opening, it hasn’t been without a few challenges along the way. Cassie explains she didn’t know anything about stocking a shop before opening Pinoy, so she had to do a lot of research. On top of this, opening a shop just before a global pandemic added another layer of difficulty. However, the shop is going strong, and Cassie is grateful for the support of her friends and family, including her sister and oldest son, who sometimes help out in the shop. She is especially grateful for her partner, Glenn. Despite his busy work schedule, Glenn drives to Perth twice a month, and helps Cassie search for stock, especially special orders. “If it wasn’t for him, the shop would never be like it is now,” Cassie says.

“It’s because of both of our hard work that the shop has come so far.” With both of their initials in the name of the shop, CG Pinoy, it is certainly a joint venture for the couple.

The word Pinoy means ‘something relating to the Philippines or Filipino people’, and can be an informal term that Filipinos use to refer to themselves.

Cassie has found working in the shop has been great for meeting new people, and she has enjoyed getting to know many Esperance locals. For someone who used to be very shy, she says the shop has helped her get better at talking to people. Of course, one of the best benefits of the shop is having access to all the ingredients she needs to make the food that she used to miss so much. “The food that I missed before is here now,” Cassie says. “Being able to eat your own traditional food is so important. Familiar foods can really make a place feel like home’.

Council Connections FOGO in 2024 The introduction of a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) service for the Shire was approved subject to the successful commissioning of the Myrup Community Drop Off and Waste Transfer Station, and is expected to commence 1 July 2024. Crucial advantages to the FOGO system include a projected annual 3,629t reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, and 3,504t of waste diverted from landfill. Once the new service is online, the weekly rubbish collection will pick up the FOGO bin, while the general refuse and recycling bins will be collected on an alternating fortnightly basis.

Invasive Weed Control Shire Parks and Reserves staff will keep using a range of tools and options in their overall weed management and maintenance program, while continuing to investigate emerging alternative options. This was backed up by Council’s decision at the February Ordinary Council Meeting, after a report on investigations into the use of steam technology and other alternatives for weed eradication was presented. Strategies used for weed control include mulching to smother weeds, competitive planting, hand weeding, biological control and spot, broadscale selective and broadscale non-selective herbicides. The aim is to minimise pesticide use where possible while continuing to maintain the Shire’s public open space, parks, infrastructure and reserves to community expectations.

Council to Write to Premier and MPs Council considered the pro-choice petition tabled at the January Agenda Briefing, requesting that Councillors oppose vaccination mandates and declare the Shire of Esperance a ‘Pro-Choice community.’ After heartfelt discussion this was not approved due to community support for opposing views, and the need for public health mandates. The Council will write to the Premier and all Members of State Parliament, expressing support for local industry such as agriculture, small business and volunteers and emphasising how the mandates are adversely affecting some elements of our community.

The Shire of Esperance has partnered with Climate Clever to work towards reducing our emissions, in line with community expectations and our Local Government Climate Change Declaration. Residents, businesses and schools can sign up to the free Climate Clever website (climateclever.org), record baseline emissions with the easy to use calculator, find out what appliances are using the most resources, and get suggestions on how to improve energy waste to save money and reduce carbon footprints. Summer in Esperance requires a few minor lifestyle adjustments. We have to remember how to drive in traffic, and to book a table if we want to go out for dinner. We don’t get the beaches completely to ourselves.

And sometimes, there are even queues! There is also an undeniable buzz of excitement in the air, as visitors discover the glorious coastline and unspoilt beauty of our region.

It’s a great reminder of just how lucky we are to call this place home.

This past summer, we’ve felt especially lucky. As COVID threw many tourist destinations into uncertainty, Esperance was fortunate enough to experience enviably high visitor numbers. Wayne Halliday, Chairperson of Tourism Esperance, says that most visitors over the summer were from within Western Australia, reacquainting themselves with the region. Tania Lowe of Anything and Everything Esperance also noticed an influx of people discovering or rediscovering Esperance. According to Tania, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many saying that they’ve travelled far and wide, and there’s no place like Esperance. “Many people say they want to move down here,” Tania says.

As is the case every summer, accommodation providers in Esperance were at capacity for most of the peak season. More than 11,000 visitors stayed at the Shire’s overflow campground over December and January alone, emphasising the demand for holiday accommodation in town. This was a substantial increase on last year’s numbers of just over 7000. Tourism operators around Esperance have also been running at capacity. Shayne Starr, skipper of Blackjack Fishing Charters, says January was their busiest month ever. “Esperance might have been too far for some people to come in the past, but with limited options for interstate travel, they’ve made the journey down here,” Shayne says. “The beauty of the place and friendliness of the locals has been mind blowing for some visitors.”

Esperance’s hospitality venues were also incredibly busy over summer. Lucky Bay Brewing owner Nigel Metz reports that their venue has had a good season, and is continuing to learn and grow when it comes to operating a business. “It’s the same across our industry, we’re all learning more about our region, and what makes us unique,” he says. “We don’t need to be the same as other areas, we need to discover what sets us apart and own that.”

The summer months were filled with live music, markets, art exhibitions, theatre, and workshops. A standout event was the eighth annual New Years Eve Foreshore Festival and Fireworks, a free event hosted by the Rotary Club of Esperance Bay. Renae Poot, one of the festival’s organisers, says that the event was a great success.

Renae credits the hard working committee with such a popular event, as well as the support of the Shire of Esperance and the many businesses and individuals who contributed.

However, not everything over the summer period has been smooth sailing . While the pandemic hasn’t had a significant impact on visitor numbers to Esperance, it has caused widespread staff shortages. Wayne says this is an ongoing challenge, as visitor numbers to Esperance have increased, while our population has remained

relatively steady. “We’ve seen staff shortages across the industry resulting in reduced hours for some businesses,” he says. “Those businesses would have gladly been open if they’d had the staff to do so.”

With the recent announcement of Simon Latchford as Esperance’s new Tourism Development Manager, there are sure to be many exciting developments in this sector. Simon brings extensive experience to this newly created role, which is a partnership between Australia’s

Golden Outback and the Shire of Esperance. He has worked in tourism hotspots including the Sunshine Coast, Whitsundays, and Margaret River, and is excited about the opportunities for promoting tourism in Esperance.

Simon sees great potential in developing a brand which reflects the pride in our region, and is striving to improve destination awareness for Esperance. “It’s important to be able to develop the industry without impacting the natural environment here, which is the rockstar of the region,” he says.

THE BRIDGE I want to start with a massive thanks to Lucky Bay Brewing for the venue’s consistency with live music. I love having a venue with such a great vibe to work within.

Programming the Fridays and Sundays for March has been tricky, but having something excellent to focus on is keeping me relatively sane. Planned larger events for March and April have been set aside. I still feel an underlying drive to put on something small (in the safest way possible), but I’m not sure if anything will come of that motivation. I’ll see if I can drag myself away from the doldrums for the amount of time that it takes to cook up an event. Open Mic returns to The Cannery on Friday 25 March and Friday 22 April. Outdoors, BYO, all that jazz… They will be fun.

Anyone working within the arts industry will tell you that programming is a bloody tricky task of late. Contending with variations in the border opening, vaccine mandates, and changing capacities is enough to make you want to bury your head in the sand. However, at the end of the

day, we owe it to social wellbeing to push forward and do as much as we can within the rules and regulations laid out. Planning for the most restrictive of scenarios will generally allow things to roll forward. Grand Casual head across to play the South West Craft Beer Festival on March 5 in Busselton.

Good planning on their behalf means they are able to operate comfortably within the latest round of restrictions, so on we roll.

We have a Super Sunday Session kicking in at Lucky Bay Brewing on March 6 for the Labour Day long weekend. Catch Hadyn Ward from 3pm - 6:30pm with quality acoustic vibes followed by Aphrodite and Femme on the decks from 6.30pm - 8.30pm, throwing down some funky beats. Good times guaranteed.

Sally Nevin Photographer Sally Nevin moved to Esperance from Perth 10 years ago, wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. With an interest in taking photos on her little film camera, she joined the local photography club and soon found a passion for landscape photography. A few years down the track, Sally turned her passion into a career, opening White Sands Gallery, Gifts & Uggs, where she displays and sells her popular work to locals and visitors.

What do you enjoy about photography?

Being out in nature, especially enjoying the beautiful sunsets. It’s so relaxing. I love being at the right place at the right time to capture something amazing and being able to share it with everyone through my images.

Tell us the story behind White Sands Gallery.

I used to have a stall at the Museum Village Markets with a few cheap frames, matted prints, postcards, and other small products. This all came about to raise money to participate in the 100’s & 1000’s Women’s Walk, to build a special needs playground at the hospital. In 2014, I held an exhibition at Esperance Community Arts and did well there. Then in 2015, after realising people liked my work, I was able to open a little store in the Museum Village. From there I progressed to a larger premises in the centre of town, five years later.

What do you enjoy about owning your own gallery?

Having full control over my work, and being able to chat with visitors to the gallery about how it all started and how I’ve progressed. There’s nothing better than face to face contact with people. They love to hear the story behind the photograph they are choosing and you just can’t do that online.

Where’s your favourite place to photograph?

11 Mile is my go-to. It’s a stunning location and just perfect for a sunset photo. For a while now I’ve been including stairs in a few of my images and the ones at 11 Mile are a feature as they are facing the right direction to lead into my scene.

What advice do you have for budding photographers?

Find what you love to photograph and nurture that genre.

Strive to learn and get better at your chosen niche and don’t be afraid to get out there and give it a go.

Do you express yourself creatively in other ways?

I love creating my own range of candles and melts. I’ve been doing that for the past year and they’ve been well received in my gallery. I’m also about to receive new equipment to start sublimation printing of our photos and designs onto a range of new products.

When you’re not taking photos, what can we find you doing?

Chilling at home with my partner and fur babies. We love relaxing on the couch, pottering in our veggie garden and heading out for a leisurely bike ride.

ARTS & CULTURE The Bijou Monologues A new performance writing project launches this month, with local writers encouraged to submit their work for a shot at having it performed live later in the year. The Bijou Monologues is an opportunity for authors to pen their stories for performance and aims to bring writers from all walks of life out of the woodwork, regardless of their performance writing experience.

The Bijou Monologues was first produced in 2010, based on a similar competition in Perth, The Maj Monologues. After a long hiatus, the project returns, kicking off with a free monologue writing workshop this month. Therese Edmonds, member of Edge Performance Writers in the South West, will host the workshop, covering the basics of monologue writing.

Attendees don’t need any prior writing or theatre experience to join, just a willingness to put pen to paper and have a bit of fun while doing it.

While entries can be about anything writers like, each monologue must run at 8 – 10 minutes when performed, and include the sentence, “That was the moment I realised...” Once submitted, entries will be presented anonymously to a panel of three expert judges, who will choose six pieces to be performed at the Bijou Theatre in July. As such, The Bijou Monologues is also a rare opportunity for local performers to take to the stage solo. For those writers who prefer to stay behind the safety of a keyboard, never fear. Finalists will not be required to direct or perform their pieces.

Producer Hannah Siemer says the goal of the project is to get people writing, and then bring their stories to life. And with entrants not constrained by a particular theme, genre, or subject, those stories will no doubt be varied. Hannah says she looks forward to seeing what the project brings out of local writers. “It’s so exciting to give local writers the opportunity to have something to write for, and the chance to share their work with an audience,” she says. “We know of many talented writers in town, and I’m sure there are many more that we aren’t aware of. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.”

Sunday Lemonade are without a doubt one of the hardest working duos within the Australian live music scene. Ty and Loz have traversed Oz a number of times over the past three years, with the majority of 2021 spent in Western Australia, racking up an unbelievable number of gigs while living in their trusty home on wheels, Maxi Van. In 2020, Sunday Lemonade won the Nannup Music Festival Emerging Artist Award, alongside MissGenius, cementing their popularity within WA, a rare feat for a Victorianbased act. Their first single ‘Countless Corners’ dropped in early 2021, and I can’t help but feel every audience member who had caught them up until this point already knew the track. Such was the energy that Sunday Lemonade delivered in the live realm the duo are truly captivating. I’m stoked to have Ty and Loz back at Lucky Bay Brewing for their final show before heading back to Victoria on Friday 11 March. Head down to catch them from 5pm.

Thanks for joining me for a classic Esperance Tide Q&A! Can you give us some insight into the conversation that lead to the formation of Sunday Lemonade?

It's always been a dream of ours (separately), wanting to quit our jobs and just play music. From the first moment we sang together it all suddenly seemed like it was possible, then bang! We just jumped in the deep end, investing 90 per cent of our savings in an old van and hoping it would last at least a couple months. That's now three years ago and two of those years pushing through a pandemic.

We’re still pinching ourselves most days and think the best is still yet to come.

Over the past three years you have played alongside some amazing acts. Who of these do you feel have influenced your live performance style?

When was the first time you heard audience members singing your lyrics back to you?

There are so many amazing musicians around the country. I find inspiration mostly from artists who have the ability to transform the energy of a whole venue. Artists who clearly take the time to support others' work and are happy when others succeed, less ego more pride. As for playing style, this comes from our busking roots up in Byron Bay. It's cutthroat up there and you just gotta stand out.

We’d seen it here and there but really started to notice it once we released music late last year. People singing ‘Countless Corners’ but saying it was the first time they’d seen us live blew our minds!

Let’s go back a few years now… Which artists did you have on high rotation at the age of 18?

Ty: Ahh mate, I used be into all sorts of post-hardcore emo vibes. High rotation was The Used, Burden of a Day, Dashboard Confessional, The Sleeping, The Getaway Plan, Dead Letter Circus, AlexisonFire, Closure in Moscow, Led Zepplin, City and Colour. You get the jist…!

Loz: Ooft. Back at 18 I was much more in the dance scene than the music which meant A LOT of top 40 pop hits! Our music background couldn’t be further apart!

Favourite Lucky Bay brew?

Definitely the Sandy Hook Pale or Cyclops, but do I hear rumours of a sour? If not, I’m going to start spreading them around until I see results!

Anything else you’d like to add?

We have a few singles on the horizon early April is the next one and we’ll be announcing that in the coming weeks. We’ll definitely be playing this one down at the brewery on the 11th.

Your favourite live performance to date?

Ooo pretty much any house concert we’ve done. And Nannup of course, and a few big nights of busking we’ve had.

Within the Esperance music scene, you have developed a following off the back of a number of brilliant gigs.

Do you find this is true of other locations within WA?

We feel so lucky to find pockets across WA and Australia where we feel our music just seems to connect. Other places like Exmouth, Margs, Albany, Freo and Dunsborough to name a few have a similar feeling.

KidsFest Returns

The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder is proud to announce the return of KidsFest on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 April from 9am to 3pm. Suitable for kids aged 0-12, this free, action-packed festival brings exciting entertainment, activities and sports to the one place for a whole weekend of fun.

KidsFest is a great opportunity to pack the kids up and head to Kalgoorlie-Boulder for a school holiday minigetaway. Pull the caravan up at the 24-hour free stop at Centennial Park right across from the action, set up at Lake Douglas for the weekend at the 72-hour free stop, or contact the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Visitor Centre for info on accommodation options.

The free two-day event celebrates all things fun, with a full schedule of activities and entertainment.

Science, art, music, and sporting activities will be

presented through stage shows, hands-on workshops, and interactive games. This year’s festival features headline act, rescue dogs in training Chase, Marshall and Ryder from Paw Patrol, who will be performing eight stage shows over the weekend and roving the grounds each day for photo opportunities. A spokesperson for the pups says they are looking forward to meeting kids from Kalgoorlie-Boulder and beyond. “Chase, Marshall and Ryder are excited to be welcoming everyone to Adventure Bay,” they say.

ADVE R TO R IA L A Science Wonderland will be catered by SciTech to engage the kids in the weird and wonderful world of science with interactive exhibits, brainbending challenges and awesome technology.

The SciTech stage shows will present Under Pressure, an exploration of air pressure, and Hot vs Cold, the ultimate showdown in which two temperatures enter and only one leaves.

For the animal lovers, camel rides with the friendly four-legged giants from Calamunda Camel Farm will run throughout the day and a petting zoo full of cuddly farm animals will be catered by Old MacDonald’s Farm. For the action seekers, there will be plenty to do including gokart rides provided by Oz Kidz Kartz, a 9-hole mini golf course, bungee trampolines, a large inflatable soccer pitch and a 35m inflatable obstacle course provided by Perth Bouncy Castle Hire. And for the arty types, the Museum of the Goldfields and Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group will facilitate craft activities, and live sketch artist Ash Von Castel will be set up to capture the little ones, creating an instant memory to take home.

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor John Bowler says he is proud to be bringing this event back to the kids of the Goldfields-Esperance Region.

“Historically this event has attracted 10,000 visitors each year to explore, create and learn,” he says. “The event provides an opportunity for Goldfields-Esperance children to enjoy high quality entertainment and activities not often on offer in the region. I encourage Esperance families to make the trip to Kalgoorlie-Boulder these school holidays.”

Twenty-Seven Years of Walking

It’s Tuesday morning and the sun is shining. It’s perfect walking weather, and the Esperance Walking Group is keen to get going. Armed with sun visors and water bottles and wearing their eye-catching blue shirts, around 25 women gather in the car park behind the RSL building in Memorial Park. They meet here every Tuesday and Thursday morning, leaving for an hour long walk at 9am sharp. Lyn Hamilton, one of the joint facilitators, emphasises “sharp.”

Founded in 1995 by Esperance local Cindy Poole, the group currently has around 40 walkers. Now known for her incredible glass creations, at the time Cindy was working for the Department of Sport and Recreation and Women’s Sport Foundation, creating a range of programs that encouraged and enabled women and young girls to get outdoors and active.

This was the first of many programs she’d come to run. “It’s definitely, to this day, the program I’m still the most proud of,” Cindy says. “I approached it in a way that I wanted it to be non-competitive, supportive, and ultimately not dependent on me.

You could come when you wanted, it was free, and, possibly because of this flexibility and inclusiveness, the group far surpassed any expectations I had.”

The group remains free and requires no membership – you just rock up when you feel like it. Cindy has watched as the walking group has grown and become a huge community success, a lot of which she credits to the core group of women who have been involved. “Over the years, this one community group has had births, deaths, new people come to town - they come and go, but there’s a core group of women who have been there right from the beginning,” Cindy says.

Cindy eventually handed responsibility over, with Lynn Hamilton and Freda Griffith now working together as facilitators. They have a good system. “Lynn works the program out on paper, then I get it all on to the computer and out to the group,” says Freda, who shifted from Kalgoorlie about 27 years ago and became involved in the group after seeing an advert in the paper. “When you’ve got no family, you have to get yourself out there to meet new people, and this is one way I did that. I met a big range of people from different walks of life and with different stories.” Freda says that it’s very much a support group for many of the walkers, especially for the women who have lost their husbands.

This week’s walk was scheduled as the ‘Windich Wander’, a circuit that runs along Dempster, Emily, and Corry Streets.

However, on arrival I’m told the schedule’s gone out the window and we’re walking along the foreshore to the Esperance Jetty because it’s the perfect morning for it. On Tuesdays there is a program with a plan of where they’re going and what they’re doing, and on Thursdays it’s a wander wherever they decide on the day. While most of the walks are along the foreshore and around town, the group sometimes ventures out of town to farming communities and have done several trips away, travelling to the Ravensthorpe Wildflower Festival, Bremer Bay, and Hopetoun. Lynn tells me this is something they’d like to do more of in the future.

We set off, everyone walking at different paces, chatting and yarning as they go. Some shoot off ahead - Freda says we’ll meet them at the end of the Jetty - while others potter along. Lyn, who joined the group 16 years ago, says that one of the best things is that the group encourages and accommodates all levels of fitness. This is something important to Cindy when forming the group – making it inclusive to all. “We’ve got the slow ones, the faster ones, the middle of the range ones,” says Lynn.

“The group’s been going so long, that once we used to be the fast ones, but everyone’s aged a bit now, so we tend to be about middle range.”

As the hour is up, we arrive back at the RSL building, where camp chairs are pulled from car boots and hot brews are poured under the shade of a pine tree. Socially distanced in a circle, of course. The group used to go to Dome after their walks, but since COVID began, they’ve found they really enjoy having a cuppa together outside in the sunshine. Every walker I chat with comments how much more than just a walking group this is - it’s a reason to get out of the house and into the sunshine, a way to meet new people and form friendships, and very much a place of community support for all involved.

Holidaymakers When your home becomes a holiday hotspot, it can be a breath of fresh air to get out of town and become a tourist yourself. As the sun now sets on hot days and balmy nights, we spoke with four locals who beat retreat over the warmer months, to find out where they spent their summer vacay.

My husband and I headed to Denmark, towing our caravan and dinghy. We love it there. We were married there, so it was fun to go back for our anniversary. It's alive with trees, good food, and wine.

What did you enjoy most about Denmark?

We love to take the dingy down to the Rivermouth and cruise up and down the river. We’ll have the beats playing and just relax and take in the scenery.

Where did you stay?

The Rivermouth Caravan Park. We love the location - it's right on the water's edge and a leisurely walking distance to town.

The whole Ricciardo clan and extended family headed to Dunsborough for a family wedding and birthday celebration.

What did you enjoy most about Dunsborough?

We all get together once a year and it’s such a special time for us to catch up and share precious moments. See and compare the growth spurts, let the kids go wild, and enjoy some adult time when the littlies have finally gone to bed. This year we had a family wedding and a special birthday so we had extra fun celebrating!

Your favourite meal while away?

How does Dunsborough compare to Esperance?

Definitely Pepper & Salt Restaurant at Forest Hill Vineyard. This is where we were married, so how could we not go back for a meal? Silas and his team are all amazing and the food is perfection.

You can’t get a beach to yourself but you can grab a great meal with lots of outdoor venues designed for young families and large groups.

Your #1 top tip...

It's definitely a little cooler than Esperance so pack warm clothes, no matter what the weather says. If you want to see Greens Pool (a must) get in early… Really early! It's like Bondi Beach packed out but worth it. The IGA is always full of amazing fresh produce - buy there!

Your favourite meal while away?

Meelup Farmhouse for a basil mojito to help deal with the heat, and I would hit up Yallingup Gugelhupf Bakery for a breakfast treat.

Your #1 top tip...

Do some of the magical Cape to Cape trail. There’s plenty of shorter walks to suit everyone.

Where did you holiday?

I moved to Esperance late last year and spent the first half of summer getting our house in order! We then had a little holiday at Hopetoun and several weekends around Esperance, trips to Wharton Beach and Mt Ridley. We also walked Woody Lake most evenings as it’s protected from the wind and is a great sunset spot.

Bremer Bay. Most summer holidays we try to get away somewhere, usually somewhere closer to Esperance like the Duke. This year we decided to switch it up and head over to Bremer for five days.

Who did you go with?

My family. My mum, dad, and younger sister.

What did you enjoy most about Bremer Bay? The beaches! My favourite spot was Little Boat Harbour. It’s a nice little beach that was crystal clear and super calm!

I did all of my adventuring with my partner James from Esperance Distillery Co. In Hopetoun we ran a pop-up gin bar for the Hopetoun volunteer appreciation evening, then spent the weekend exploring the Fitzgerald National Park.

Bremer Bay Caravan Park.

Exploring Fitzgerald National Park and sussing out some nice fishing spots. We have recently bought some new fishing gear and are enjoying the ‘zen’ experience of the sport. Lazy evenings at the Port Hotel and challenging James to darts… It was the longest game in history!

How does Bremer Bay compare to Esperance?

The beaches are very similar but so different at the same time. The crystal clear water is amazing, though maybe not quite as good as Wharton on a good day! The town itself is very small but has everything you need.

Your favourite meal while away?

The bao buns from the Museum Cafe! Absolutely delish.

Yummy breakfast wraps from the Shipwrecked Gourmet Bakery. Quick and easy on the go breaky that we took to Hopetoun’s own West Beach each morning.

Your #1 top tip...

Do not do the orca tour if you get seasick! I do recommend the orca tour but if you get seasick, I’ll give you the heads up now, have fun…! It is an amazing experience though.

Pack a picnic lunch and sit and enjoy the Hamersley Inlet in the Fitzgerald National Park. It’s a lovely shaded spot, protected from the wind in the afternoons.

The First School of Esperance Educating Esperance in the Early Days

In 1891, the first attempt was made to establish a school in Esperance. At the time, Esperance was a small pastoral settlement. Aside from the area’s First Nations people, the Wudjari Nyungars, there were just a few families living in Esperance. At the time, the Dempster brothers’ station was managed by George Bostock, and the station employed several men as station hands, including Laurence Sinclair, George Doust, John McGlade, and Ben Hannett. These men had 21 children between them, including 12 school aged children. As well as the Dempsters’ homestead, the only other employment in Esperance was provided by the telegraph station and the police station. The concerned parents of Esperance wrote to the Central Board of Education, saying “We the undersigned inhabitants and parents of children at Esperance Bay (WA) do hereby earnestly request that the District and Central Boards of Education will grant us a school for the education of our children.” The Bostocks provided a room for the school in the homestead and John Davis, from Albany, was employed as a teacher.

The families in the area were also interested in Davis setting up a night school for the older children who had not learnt to read or write. School attendance quickly grew to 18 students. Despite this promising start, the Board of Education declined to fund the school, leaving the parents of Esperance to pay the teacher’s wage themselves. Mr Davis did not last very long in the role, leaving town after a few months.

of children up to now have received absolutely no education, and the difficulties in the way of starting a school have taken me three months to overcome.” By the end of October, school attendance had reached 23 and was expected to increase steadily. Some parents, dissatisfied with Baker’s teaching, decided to start a private school, employing Amy Provis, an experienced teacher from Adelaide. Baker resigned in protest at this action, and Miss Provis then applied for the role at the Government school, taking over from Baker.

Within a few years, the town had grown rapidly, as news about gold finds in the Coolgardie area began to spread throughout the colony, attracting fortune hunters to the area. Esperance was gazetted as a town in December 1893. In early 1894, the town’s inhabitants once again wrote to the Education Board, informing them that a man called Vivyan Baker had come to Esperance and was prepared to establish a school. Although Mr Baker was an ‘educated man’, he had no teaching qualifications or experience. Despite this, he was appointed as a temporary teacher, and Esperance’s new school opened on 1 October 1984, with 13 students in attendance. The schoolroom was a rented room that was little more than a tin shed. Baker later wrote in a letter, “The majority

By 1895, the Education Department decided that Esperance warranted a new school, and so 350 pounds was allocated to build a stone school building. The tender for this project was awarded to Charles Layton, the same builder who had constructed the new Post Office in Esperance (now demolished). The building was completed in January 1896. The new school had room for 40 students, but Miss Provis began the school year with 52 students enrolled. By May, the situation had become even worse, with 93 students enrolled in the school.

The Education Department built a temporary building to house some of these students, but with more than 100 students enrolled by July 1896, something more permanent had to be done.

away from the area. By 1908, the town was too small to warrant a Municipal Council, so the council was dissolved and the Esperance Road Board took over the civic duties of the town. The old school building served as the offices of the Road Board right up until the 1960s. Around this time, the town began growing steadily as farms were developed in the district and so, in 1961, the Esperance Road Board transitioned to the Esperance Shire Council. With the Shire Council moving into new, purpose-built offices on Windich Street, the old school was vacated in 1966. The building was used as a library for a short time, before the RSL took up the lease of the building in 1971.

The Education Department swapped the land where the school building was situated with land where the present-day Esperance Primary School is located. A new school building was completed on the new site, and was officially opened in 1897, with Thomas Hart as principal and Miss Provis as assistant teacher. The beautiful stone school building became the offices of the Municipal Council. When it became apparent that the hoped-for railway line through to the Goldfields would not be going ahead, Esperance began to decline as many people moved

During World War I, 78 men from the Esperance district enlisted and of these, 20 were killed in action. In the years following the war, community groups in Esperance raised funds for a memorial to commemorate and honour those who had served.

The Esperance War Memorial was erected in 1925, and since that time, has been the site of ANZAC Day memorial services. Both the RSL Hall and the War Memorial were heritage listed in 2009 and remain a much-loved and meaningful part of Esperance’s heritage today.

While you won’t earn a dime doing it, it will make you a richer person.

Prioritise your long-term wellbeing over short-term indulgences this month. It might be as simple as passing up the polenta chips at the Quarters or booking that overdue appointment as the dentist. Or perhaps you’ve been putting off a more serious evaluation of your health. Deal with this now and your future self will thank you. Learn to adapt to new obligations regarding your health – eating better, boozing less, and getting regular check-ups – and you’ll be all the better for it.

Vegan Dan Dan Noodle After stopping by CG Pinoy Shop this month (see page 14), we were inspired by some of their hard-to-find ingredients. Here’s our vegan version of this classic Sichuan dish.

Ingredients

Method

450g firm tofu 300g dried noodles of choice 1 tbsp vegetable oil 2 celery stalks, finely chopped 1 brown onion, finely chopped 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped 350g pickled mustard greens, roughly chopped 3 spring onions, finely chopped (for serving)

To make the sauce, whisk all the ingredients together in a small bowl and set aside.

Drain the packet of tofu and using a kitchen towel, soak up the extra moisture. Crumble into smaller pieces and set aside.

3.

In a medium pot, cook your noodles according to the packet, drain and set aside.

Meanwhile, in a large wok, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and celery and season with a good pinch of salt. Cook until soft, about 8 - 10 minutes.

Dan Dan Sauce 3cm piece of ginger, finely chopped 3 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp Chinkiang vinegar 3 tbsp natural peanut butter 2 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp chilli oil 1-2 tsp Sichuan peppers, ground 2 tsp sugar Serves 4

Add the garlic and cook for 1 - 2 minutes then add the tofu along with the pickled mustard greens. Season again with another good pinch of salt and a good crack of pepper. Cook for another 5 6 minutes.

Add the noodles to the wok along with the dan dan sauce.

Serve with a garnish of spring onion and some extra chilli if you are feeling game.

Open shrubland with freshwater lakes at Cape Le Grand NP

Discovering New Species Discovering a new plant species is often considered the holy grail of botanical work. And there’s a fairly good chance in the incredibly diverse and poorly studied Esperance sandplains, you might be just lucky enough to be that discoverer. In 2021, there were likely two new species discovered, how amazing! Often these plants can appear unassuming or not unusual to the untrained eye, but tiny details in the fruit and leaves make it different enough from all known species. There

is a very complicated process for the heralded ‘new species’ discovery. Firstly, a specimen is declared by the WA Herbarium to be slightly different and needs further investigation. This is then provided with a phrase name, an informal name linked to a specimen at the WA Herbarium or another formal institution, requiring further research and investigation. It may be decades before taxonomists do the relevant study to formally declare that it is different and a new species, in which case a detailed description will be published and a new name assigned. Alternatively, their studies may show that it is actually a variant of an already existing species, in which case all records will be absorbed into the already named species. It’s amazing to think that new species are still being regularly discovered in Esperance.

Please note: The above refers to a ‘renaming’ and ‘discovery’ process specific to western, botanical science.

The local Wudjari Nuyngar people had a complex understanding of the flora for tens of thousands of years before western science, and these plants were already ‘named’ well before Latin species names were applied.

An archaeology student from Perth was rescued in a joint effort by local police and HeliSpirit, after becoming disorientated while walking back from an archaeological site in Cape Le Grand National Park. The 57-year-old followed the survival advice of television adventurer Bear Grylls, drinking his own urine and burying himself in a sand dune for warmth until he was rescued the following morning.

Two Esperance businesses received Regional Economic Development grants to help drive their projects further. Olive farm Yirri Grove received $60,000 to expand their production area, increase restaurant capacity and plant more olive trees to support future demand, while Esperance Diving and Fishing received $200,000 to renovate its premises, to create two fully accessible customised holiday apartments and office space.

The Rotary Club of Esperance welcomed its first female member since the club was formed in 1962. Corrina Rawlinson’s application was accepted by the club’s 33 members, after she decided to join the club to help serve the community. The Rotary Club of Esperance Bay, another Rotary club in Esperance, has a significant number of female members. Rotary International did not allow women to join Rotary clubs until 1989.

Esperance Speedway dominated their competitors in the Kalgoorlie versus Esperance Challenge, retaining the competition’s shield more than 700 points ahead of Kalgoorlie Speedway.

Leading the charge for Esperance were Jacob Hill in the New Stars juniors feature race, David Boyes in the Late Models feature race, and Linton Dickerson in the Street Stocks final.
