This fortnight has some brilliant options for those scouring the town for things to do and the Tide team has come up with a whole list of ideas. Check it out at esperancetide.com. Worth a special mention is the Cannery Arts Centre’s open mic session, which runs in collaboration with Elements art exhibition, featuring work by local artists Jason Wooldridge, Eiméar O’Connor, Tammy Andrews and Will Creed. Flick to page 7 for more details. Taylor’s Beach Bar, The Traveller’s Inn and the Pier Hotel are also showing live music over the PHOTOGRAPHY CREDIT: LUCY VINCENT weekend. Consider taking the fam to the Museum Village Markets on Easter Sunday too, weather permitting it should be a great day. Lucky Bay Brewing is open over the long weekend, Easter Sunday and Monday included (but closed on Good Friday). The coffee and croissant lovers out there will be pleased to hear Downtown Espresso Bar, the sister store to Coffee Cat, has opened next door to Dempster Street Barber Shop. Perfect when the weekend comes to a close and you realise the tonnes of work you have to get back to can’t be done without a double espresso and a jalapeño pretzel. Lastly, a reminder to slow down (double demerits!), plan ahead and don’t drink and drive. Ingredients • 1 ripe Bosc pear • 1 tsp honey • 1 cinnamon stick • 1 cup sweetened greek yogurt
• 1 tsp cinnamon • 1/2 cup Fare granola
Method 1. Peel pear and cut in half. Remove stem and using a melon baller, core out center of each half. 2. In a small saucepan, bring to a boil 4 cups water, honey, and cinnamon stick. When mixture is boiling, slide in pears and reduce to a simmer. 3. Simmer, covered for 20 minutes or until pears are tender when pierced with fork. Remove pears from poaching liquid and set aside to cool. 4. Mix greek yogurt with 1 tsp cinnamon. Spoon onto plate, top with pears and granola. All ingredients can be found at BJ’s Fruit & Veg

What were you doing before Lucky Bay Brewing? Was and still am, about half time with South East Premium Wheat Growers Association. This job crosses over into brewing particularly in the area of grain quality.

What do you like to do outside of work? Surf, squash and if I’m lucky gardening or camping.
What is something you don’t sell but would consider? A Gluten free product, the common request is a cider, we are looking at a more local focus as there are not many apples around Esperance.
What is your favourite beer on the menu? Well, I find myself changing beers regularly, right now while writing this I have a glass of Sandy Hook and it has hit the spot after brew day :) Just kegged a new batch of the Tanker Dark Ale, might go one of them next.......
What’s next for Lucky Bay Brewing? We still are very much in the learning curve on what actually our little brewery will turn out to be, so while lots of ideas have been considered in our first year or so , nothing radical planned right now.... This may change at anytime however.

By Kyron Smithson Do you ever feel as if everything is changing, though try as you may you have very little control over the eventual outcome, just casually swept along. I guess the goal is to find yourself with the perception that all and any change will be positive. If you look back over the past 5 years of your timeline and pick out the events that you found the most difficult, undoubtedly you will find the positive that has come from them, undoubtedly you will recognize how they have affected your character for the good. And if you cant find some positive I guess you could always write a super depressing song about the event, and slot it into your live performance when people are hardly expecting it. You could make the song so damn ambiguous that the audience is unable to recognize that you’re dealing with subject matter that may make them feel uncomfortable. On the other hand you may find that speaking in the plainest of terms will allow the audience to connect on a deep level with your work, recognizing that which is present in us all, our humanity. In times when you’re feeling you could pour a little blood and ink its grand to have grand characters around you. I could ask for no two better than John Ratcliff and Tim Currie. Two lads who will be joining forces to craft some sweet sweet sounds down at Taylors on Saturday the 8th of April from 7pm. Sunday the 9th April (4pm) sees Steve West and the Billy Baxter Kentet take to the stage at Taylors, for some jumping good times. Easter long weekend is going to be a cracker. Kick off your break on Thursday the 13th of April at The Cannery Arts Centre with the opening of the Elements Art Exhibition, featuring work by locals Eimear O’Connor, Jason Wooldridge, Tammy Andrews and Will Creed. The evening will run in collaboration with an open mic session presented by Forage Community Kitchen Garden and KyzaPresents. Pizzas will be available to purchase and Lucky Bay Brewery will be on site to serve up some refreshing beverages. Saturday the 15th of April sees Estella and Mitch, Simon and Mary, A Simple Array and Djs Chris Pope and Drew Davies throwing down some tasty tunes at Taylors Beach Bar and Cafe from 7pm-late. Sunday the 16th (4pm) features Rachel Vibart, Emily Altieri, Danielle Ratcliff and Annie Flood perform at Taylors from 4pm.

To Drink Tea
It is time to sit down and make yourself a cup of tea. Reach for your cup and feel your fingers wrap around an object of circular shape. Allow the heat from the cup to move slowly through the pottery, plastic or whatever substance you are holding, right through to the contact with your skin. Notice the heat moving further and further into the body, generating a sensation that moves gently up your arm. Observe and compare the difference in temperature throughout the body – the heat focused in one section, but having the ability to flow these sensations throughout. Notice how as the heat from the cup rises it draws a focus to the power in your hands. Use this power to move the cup to your mouth in a slow motion – feel the muscles strengthening and lengthening within your arm; changing the shape to make it possible to lift it towards the soft outlining of your lips. Feel the shock that evolves from the change in temperature as you pour the cup in a downwards motion; allowing the tea to graze

past the lip into the smooth interior of the mouth. Feel your mouth beginning to fill and change shape to allow such space to be filled. Notice how the tongue feels an urge to lifted - lifted ever so slightly to allow a wave of tea to form that moves the substance towards the back of the throat. Feel it glide down the back of the neck. Take another sip. Observe how the temperature of the cup begins to change as it becomes half full or half empty (depending on how you choose to view it). Feel a warmth beginning to grow within the stomach and notice how it can spread throughout the body; generating a sense of calmness and contentment. Now come back to the breath - notice how unless we draw our attention to it, it just moves in and out of the lungs without struggle or force. Feel how you have the power to change this pressure – increasing or decreasing its speed and depth. Reflect on how this is allowing the processes within the body to move at a pace that gives us life; that allows space for change and the ability to adapt to whatever situation we find ourselves in. Feel the appreciation your body has for being able to change the sensations and movements within the body, through the guiding strength of the breath allowing this to be possible. Embrace this sense of trust, a trust in knowing that no matter what changes or adaptions we have to make – the breath will allow it all to be possible and will stand within and around you through it all.

Even though your cat may not have been aware, things changed considerably for him on the 1st of November 2013 – this was the date on which the new State Cat Legislation was implemented.

“What does that mean” I hear you ask, well, apart from requirements to have your cat desexed, microchipped and registered with your local Shire, it also opened the gates for local laws to be introduced which include restricting the number of cats owned per household to two and confining your cat(s) to your own property.

Confining your cat to your property? As any cat owner will know, this is easier said than done but it is now something all cat owners need to think seriously about. The positive benefits of confining your cats is that they are less likely to be killed or injured on the road or attacked by other animals possibly leading to high vet bills; they will not harm or endanger local fauna and at least you will know where they are and that they are safe. Let’s look at the options: you can keep your cat permanently indoors but if he has been used to an outside life he may continually try to escape or yowl at the door. You could build or buy a cat run so that he can still lie in the sunshine and enjoy the fresh air – buying can be expensive but building your own can be basic and relatively cheap but please do check with the Shire whether you need permission to build the structure. If you have a confident cat you could introduce him to a halter and lead – many cats will enjoy a walk outside; why not walk your dog and cat together, you could start a trend? There are products on the market that you attach to your fence to stop your cat jumping over; maybe you could relegate him to a part of the garden to make this more feasible.

Gorgeous Grevilleas
Although there are about 360 different varieties of Grevilleas in Australia, only about 10 are native to Esperance - most growing inland on heavier soils. The Grevilleas that do well in our coastal sands are the Grevillea crithmifolia (ground cover) white flowers and fast speading, Grevillea obtusifolia (small shrub) red flowers and fills a space, Grevillea priessii (small shrub) grey/green foliage and red flower, Grevillea olivacea (large shrub) red flower and a great plant for blocking a fence or creating a screen, Grevillea nudiflora (prostate) red flower with fine leaves and a ridgy didge local plant endemic to our area. All these Grevilleas will do well in our coastal sandy environment, and after a deep water at planting with maybe a few follow up waters - will eventually be able to survive without regular watering.
