Welcome to our final issue of the year, and what a year it’s been! Who would have thought this time last year that our lives would be turned upside down in a few months’ time? This year has been tough but our community is even tougher, and we’ve shown nothing but strength and resilience throughout. Just so none of us forget what went down in 2020, we’ve collated a wrap-up of the year for you. Find it on page 4.

This time of year can be really hard for a lot of people, so if you’re in a position to do so, please have a think about what you can do for others this festive season.

A couple of exciting new ventures took off in Esperance in November.

Helicopter tour company HeliSpirit launched, and we were lucky enough to hitch a ride on one of their amazing flights to Lake Hillier. Not only did we fly over the pink lake, but we landed right next to it, too! An incredible experience and one we highly recommend. Read about our tour on page 6.

Also launching last month was Siam Thai Cuisine, the first Thai restaurant in Esperance in roughly 20 years. We managed to snag a reservation and went along to taste their food. You’ll find our review on page 29.

A Year in Review It goes without saying, this year has been a ride. Our vocabulary grew thanks to words like asymptomatic, toilet paper became a precious commodity, and we weren’t allowed to go to the pub. And that was just in the first quarter of the year. As we lay 2020 to rest, here’s a reminder of how it went down.

After the worst bushfires in Australian history, a Bushfire Relief Concert was held at the Soundshell on January 12, with eight local musicians forming the line-up. Despite being organised by the Shire of Esperance in just four days, the event attracted 1500 people and raised more than $14,000 for BlazeAid, a volunteer-based organisation that helps rural communities rebuild after natural disasters.

Esperance Shire Council resolved to abandon a proposed landfill site in Merivale, citing concerns about potential contamination and damage to the surrounding environment. The proposal was highly contentious, with Esperance Merivale Tip Action Group (EMTAG) forming to fight it. The group said toxins from the tip would endanger wetlands, farms and tourism.

The State Government closed the Shire of Esperance borders on April 5, after mounting pressure from the local community and Shire to do so. To avoid an influx of visitors over the Easter and school holiday period, people were not permitted to enter the region without an exemption. Two check points were set up on the edge of the Shire boundary, with police having the power to enforce restrictions and issue fines of up to $50,000 to people not complying.

The reality of COVID-19 began to sink into the community, prompting the launch of the Esperance, We Need to Talk campaign on March 24. The campaign was created by a group of locals, with the aim of stopping the spread of the virus. A series of videos were made about doing “the right thing,” and the community were encouraged to share these videos on social media.

For the first time in almost 50 years, Esperance went without a local print publication. In April, Australian Community Media closed the Esperance Express, which had been in production since 1973. In May, Esperance Tide followed suit, albeit temporarily, with COVID-19 leaving little choice but to stop press until the lockdown lifted.

Cascade was officially declared water deficient on June 19. The declaration meant the State Government would begin to cart water from the Water Corporation’s scheme in Norseman on a weekly basis. Water would be delivered to mobile tanks on the Cascade Oval, reducing the distance farmers needed to travel to source emergency livestock water.

Ports Football Club took out the local footy grand final on September 19, with a 77-point victory over Esperance.

Undeterred by finishing at the bottom of the ladder last year, and only winning one of four matches against the Bulldogs in the 2020 season, the Blues won every quarter for a 15.10 (100) - 4.9 (33) victory. In netball, United beat Gibson 52-37, in men’s hockey, Sharks defeated Castletown 2-1 and in women’s hockey, Campbell won against Mather, 2-1.

Stage 1 of the Esperance Indoor Sports Stadium Redevelopment Project finished, with the official opening of the Esperance Indoor Stadium on July 17. The facility cost $7.8 million to build and contains four full-sized courts, amongst a host of amenities such as a kiosk, change rooms and retractable grandstand seating.

Feature film Dirt Music premiered locally, almost two years after being shot in Esperance. Based on the novel of the same name by iconic Western Australian author Tim Winton, Dirt Music starred Kelly Macdonald, Garret Hedlund and David Wenham, as well as 70 local extras. A local premiere was held for those who participated in the film at Fenwick 3 Cinemas, with Associate Producer Kate Separovich in attendance.

A documentary about sharks, filmed near Salisbury Island off the coast of Esperance, aired in the United States during the Discovery Channel’s highly popular Shark Week.

Lair of the Great White, presented by American marine biologist Dr Craig O’Connell, was filmed without baiting the sharks, differentiating it from most shark documentaries. Several locals were involved in the project, including Marc Payne, who took on the role of Marine Operations Coordinator.

Western Australia’s hard border came down on November 14, coinciding with an increasing cluster of COVID-19 cases in South Australia. To protect Esperance residents from potential exposure to the virus, travellers who had crossed the state border and driven to Esperance were directed to Newtown Football Oval, which was established as an isolated site where travellers could seek assistance from authorities. Police advised those who could not find a safe place to quarantine for 14 days would be told to turn around and head back to SA.

HeliSpirit Lands in Esperance Rugged dunes melting into white shores, shores swallowed by water that fades from crystal to aquamarine to sapphire. Sometimes calm, often unruly, always striking. Thanks to the rise in the popularity of aerial photography over the last decade, we know what our spectacular coastline looks like from above. But to experience it from the air firsthand is something else entirely. We hitched a ride with HeliSpirit to see it for ourselves.

We meet our pilot Jy at James Street Jetty, HeliSpirit’s base for the next six months. He gives us a brief rundown of the three hours we’ll be spending with him and before we know it, we’re up and away.

Our destination is Lake Hillier, the famously pink lake sitting atop Middle Island. The lake has become a poster child for Esperance in recent years but given its remote location, has been relatively inaccessible until now. It’s a bucket list destination, even for locals, and we couldn’t be more excited to not only fly over it, but land right next to it too.

Up in the helicopter, it feels like we’re floating through an immersive art installation. The drone shots of Esperance sprinkled through our Instagram feeds haven’t prepared us for the otherworldly scenery below. Jy takes us on the scenic route towards Middle Island, tracing the coastline from town towards Cape Le Grand and Cape Arid National Parks, then it’s a quick pit stop to refuel before heading out over the ocean. This is our home, our backyard, but from our continuous gasps and oh-my-gods, you wouldn’t know it. The contrast of sunburnt granite against the milky shoreline and azure sea is nothing short of aweinspiring. Dolphins, seals and even a whale and her calf are spotted lolling about in the water, enjoying the spring weather just as much as we are.

As if the vast landscape didn’t already make us feel small, as we track towards Middle Island, we pass over Cyclops, a heavy and unpredictable wave that has even the most experienced surfers questioning their abilities. Touted as one of the most dangerous breaks in the world, Cyclops was part-legend, partlocal secret until featuring in two surf documentaries in the early 2000s. Billabong Odyssey (2003) and Bra Boys (2007) both showcased the wave, which is argued by surfing pros to have the thickest lip known to man. From the safety of the helicopter, we watch as the infamous wave smashes against the reef with the ferocity that it’s known for. Having heard about this wave for years, it’s incredible to finally see it in action.

It’s not long before we arrive at our destination. As we approach Middle Island, we catch our first glimpse of Lake Hillier in all its glory. Tourism brochures aren’t kidding when they refer to the lake as “bubble gum pink” – it’s just about more Hubba Bubba than Hubba Bubba itself. We land on Mother Nature’s helipad, a natural rock platform, and then exit the helicopter, eager to get up close and personal with the island’s main attraction. It’s surreal to be here, completely alone. We know this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and as we dip our toes in the flamboyant water, we savour every moment. Jy’s knowledge about Middle Island and Lake Hillier is impressive. As we explore the island, he entertains us with stories about Black Jack Anderson, Australia’s only recorded pirate who called the island home in the 19th century. After taking in the sights, we lay a blanket on the lake’s shore and tuck into a gourmet Deli King hamper, champagne and Lucky Bay Brewing beer, all provided as part of the tour. We toast to a morning we won’t soon forget and agree this is one picnic that will be hard to top. ⟶

Our return flight to town takes us over some of the 105 islands that make up the Recherche Archipelago, as well as a few of our favourite beaches, like Wharton Beach and Lucky Bay (hello, sunbathing kangaroos). We touchdown back at James Street and suddenly the past three hours feel like a dream – one we don’t want to wake up from.

Tales from the Bremer Canyon

Dave is certain he wasn’t the first to come across the abundance of marine life inhabiting the Bremer Canyon.

Situated in the middle of a commercial shipping route more than 50 kilometres off the coast of Bremer Bay, he’s adamant that many a sailor has witnessed it firsthand.

Dave was, however, the first to give it attention. He initially noticed something different about the area while working onboard a bluefin tuna research vessel between Esperance and Albany in the 1990s. Large pods of whales, huge flocks of seabirds and splashing off in the distance made it stand out from the rest of the vast ocean. A few years later, while Dave was tagging sharks with the CSIRO, it was discovered that a three-metre great white had been eaten alive by an unknown predator in the same area. Dave’s curiosity went into overdrive. He had to know what was out there.

As an unknown filmmaker, Dave pitched the documentary idea to the ABC. Much to Dave’s disbelief, the broadcaster granted $950,000 towards the film. On the first day of filming, Dave found himself questioning if this biodiversity hotspot actually existed. “How could there possibly be an aggregation of killer whales in the middle of a commercial shipping route, in the middle of

[what was, at the time] an oil and gas prospect, on the edge of an area that used to be heavily hunted for bluefin tuna?” Dave recalled wondering. “How could this area be there without it being known about?” Five nautical miles from their destination, with nothing but rough sea surrounding the boat filled with camera crew, Dave really begun to doubt himself. But as soon as they hit the coordinates, it was on. “We had 60 killer whales charge at us,” he said. “It was outrageous.” The crew spent three weeks filming, capturing the first underwater imagery of Australian killer whales and exploring the canyon system 800 metres below. The Search for the Ocean’s Super Predator was a huge success both at home and overseas. The Bremer Canyon was now on the world stage.

In the last five years alone, Dave has visited the Bremer Canyon close to 400 times with Naturaliste Charters, founders of the killer whale watching tours operating out of Bremer Bay. Despite his many trips, the hairs on the back of his neck still stand up every time the boat nears the area. Tales from his expeditions are reminiscent of nautical folklore and are as fascinating as they are nightmarish. Pods of killer whales snatching giant squid from the mouths of 60-tonne sperm whales; as many as 70 threemetre sharks circling below the surface at any one time; schools of four-metre swordfish, each one a target for squid up to six-metres long. During one particularly memorable expedition, an estimated 2000 dolphins were seen flying through the water, desperately trying to escape a pod of killer whales in hot pursuit. The orcas soon caught up. “They just smashed the dolphins as they went through,” Dave said. But that was just the beginning. The killer whales soon turned on a blue whale and proceeded to make a meal of it. Using its tail as its defence, the blue whale attempted to slap the predators off but as it hit one killer whale away, another would quickly replace it. “People around me were screaming, ‘What sort of tour is this?’” Dave laughed, adding that the tours weren’t always so intense. ⟶

Tales from the Bremer Canyon make maritime legends sound like children’s bedtime stories. Killer whales skinning blue whales alive. Big sharks being eaten by even bigger sharks. Giant squid praying on swordfish more than four metres long. For many, this is the stuff of nightmares. It’s a dark abyss of ocean – up to five kilometres deep – inhabited by some of mankind’s most feared marine predators, none of whom show no mercy to their prey. But as violent and confronting as some of the encounters are, for Esperance-based filmmaker Dave Riggs, the Bremer Canyon is utterly inspiring. Next to nothing was known about the biodiversity hotspot until Dave convinced the ABC to fund a documentary about it ten years ago. Search for the Ocean’s Super Predator, released in 2013, was a hit and more than 10,000 people have visited the area aboard specialist charters in the years since. Dave now plans to livestream direct from the Bremer Canyon, giving those who can’t see it for themselves a chance to get in on the action.

These experiences, Dave believes, are simultaneously confronting, inspirational and mysterious. He now plans to share them with those who can’t experience them in person. From next year, Dave plans to live stream footage from the Bremer Canyon. This is a huge feat, with the edge of the canyon 45 kilometres offshore, on the very edge of mobile coverage. Dave is currently in the process of building a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that is effectively invisible to marine life, to allow him to film without disturbing the peace. Controlled from the surface, the ROV will initially be sent down to around 80 metres. He will then attempt to take it over the canyon edge to 1000 metres, the depth at which killer whales are hunting one of their favourite foods, beaked whales.

Thousands have already visited the Bremer Canyon with Naturaliste Charters and Dave hopes his live streaming will give thousands more the opportunity to explore the area he describes as “mind-boggling fascinating.” While the estimated 300 killer whales that inhabit the area are its main drawcard, Dave said they are just the tip of the iceberg. “There are so many interesting and inspirational things that happen out there,” he said. “We’re just at the forefront of it and I’d love people to be involved in something that showcases this.”

Welcome to December. Whether you’re the kind of person who’s already got your tree up and decorated or the kind who will be hunting through your cupboards for the tinsel on Christmas Eve, it’s certainly the Silly Season. Sometimes, in the rush of parties and presents, planning and decorating, we can forget the real meaning of the season. And I think we can all agree that Christmas is a time for giving, for kindness, for generosity, and for caring about our loved ones and those who are less privileged than us.

So in the midst of all the holiday madness, how can we avoid getting swept up in the consumerism? Here are some suggestions on how you can keep generosity and kindness at the forefront of your mind this Christmas season.

Give a gift to an Esperance child Every year, Esperance Care Services holds a Christmas party for Esperance kids on December 11. This party is for clients of Care Services and anyone who is doing it tough at this time of year.

As part of this wonderful event, Care Services ensures that each child gets a Christmas present.

If you would like to help out, you can purchase a gift for a child and drop it off to Care Services.

Gifts should be in the range of $20 to $30 each. You can also donate towards the costs of the party or towards the wonderful work that Care Services does in supporting the Esperance community. For more information, pop in and see them at the op shop on Gilpin Street.

Buy someone a goat What do you give to your rich uncle who already has everything? Give him a goat, of course! Okay, so he probably wouldn’t thank you for giving him an actual goat. Rather than your money going to support a big multinational company, it will go towards the livelihood of a local person who is invested in our community. Check out the Museum Village Markets, where you can buy lots of handcrafted gifts.

For a wonderful way to give back to the community, why not join one of the service clubs around town? You could join the Lions Club or one of the two Rotary clubs in town.

For other ways to give back, you could join the volunteer fire brigade, or chat to the Volunteer Resource Centre about other opportunities to volunteer.

Give your time and attention

Be patient

It’s a busy time of year, which means that it’s all the more important to slow down and pay attention to the people around you. Maybe you have a friend who isn’t able to be with their family this year – could you invite them for Christmas lunch? Or can you pop in and visit your neighbour who is a bit socially isolated? All of these little acts of kindness go a long way towards building holiday spirit in our community.

This summer, Esperance is going to be filled with holidaymakers and tourists from around our state. While we’re excited to share the little slice of paradise that is Esperance with others, it’s going to be a lot busier in town than usual! Let’s all make an extra effort to be patient with our incredible hospitality and customer service workers. And if you’re visiting Esperance, we’re grateful to have you here, and we hope you have a wonderful Christmas in our little town.

On December 28 is Beach Dazed Acoustic at The Cannery Arts Centre. This will be a chill, casual night (we’ll need it after Saturday Night Vice) featuring James Abberley, Rachel Vibart, Luke Fox, and Bec Schutz. Tickets are flying out the door for both of these.

ARTS & CULTURE Elements ed. III An eclectic selection of artistic talent will take over the Cannery Arts Centre this summer, with a vibrant exhibition not to be missed. Elements ed. III opens this weekend, showcasing some of Esperance’s best artists across a multitude of disciplines. It is the first time Tammy Andrews, Caroline Abbey, Eimear O’Connor, Naomi Stanitzki and Jason Wooldridge have exhibited together, promising a new and exciting collection of local works.

Jason’s work varies from big, bold ships and whales mounted on slabs of timber, to delicate figurines of birds that inhabit the wetlands next to his farmlet, and the chooks in his backyard. He has exhibited internationally, but perhaps Jason’s most well-known work is the iconic Whale Tail on the Esperance Foreshore, a collaboration with local glass artist, Cindy Poole.

Joining Jason for Elements ed. III are four female artists, each established in their own right. They bring colour, texture and shape to the exhibition through painting (Tammy Andrews), graphic design and photography (Caroline Abbey), handmade flameworked and kiln-formed glass (Eimear O’Connor), and pottery and printmaking (Naomi Stanitzki). Jason said there was no theme to the exhibition, with his intention being to simply bring together amazing local artists from different disciplines. “We just want to have a beautiful exhibition with real variety,” he said.

Elements ed. III opens at the Cannery Arts Centre on Sunday 6 December, with a bar and live music from 3pm. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition runs until January 10.

Curating the exhibition is Jason Wooldridge, a steel sculptor who fell into his craft. With a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration and a background in painting, Jason didn’t start working with metal until he emigrated to Australia from Britain in 2009. Previously a high school Art teacher, Jason soon found himself teaching Design and Technology instead. “Having to make things out of metal for a job, I started to see the creative potential of it,” Jason said. “I learnt a lot from being exposed to metalwork all day every day and begun to experiment with what I could do.”

I’m always really motivated and keen to write, and I’m constantly doing so. If anything, learning how to switch off the creativity and finish some of the many already existing projects is the real challenge.

I have actually been writing a song recently that is kind of like having a conversation with yourself about the world we live in. Obviously there has been a lot of very large changes recently and I guess it brings forth a lot of questions. For example, one of the lyrics in the song is, “If a circle is round, then where do you hide?” which is a metaphor for the planet and how it shrunk with COVID.

In many ways, artists have been lucky and unlucky in the same breath. There has been a silver lining, if you will, to spend time on projects that had otherwise been neglected as the cogs of day-to-day life seemed to steal time away from you. But also, the loss of touring and playing live brought with it its own stresses both financially and creatively, and we were the lucky ones here in WA.

I’m definitely no expert here but I do try and keep to a few simple rules. Try not to rush the release, make sure you are happy with the song first and foremost. When you release your new track, go book some shows and play it live to help spread the word and push it out there. Set small goals for yourself and stick to them.

I have really enjoyed getting back to touring. Playing live is definitely my favourite part about music - nothing can make you feel the same as a good gig.

I have a playlist on Spotify called James and the Giant Playlist! I add all my favourite music there. You’ll find everything from folk/ roots to electronic/hip-hop in there. At the moment I have Active Child and Matt Corby on repeat.

I find it really hard to isolate any one moment or experience, as music has taken me on an insane journey. But if I had to pick one it would have to be sitting in the green room at the Gov in Adelaide with Xavier Rudd, discussing the guitar solo on his next release.

When the west of Australia was first settled it was accomplished by sea travel, and safe anchorages were always needed. After Albany was settled, small settlements began springing up on the coastline, and a jetty was usually built to bring ashore supplies in any quantity. The first jetty in Esperance was built by the Dempster brothers in 1876 and since that time, jetties have been vitally important to Esperance. The Dempsters’ small landing allowed ships to be loaded and unloaded.

It was built close to the site of the current day port, opposite the Dempsters’ homestead. In 1877, a trolley line was built from the Dempsters’ jetty to their wool shed, for easy transport of the wool clip.

In 1894, the Newtown Jetty, which later became known as the Castletown Jetty, was built by the Esperance Bay Land Company. This syndicate also owned the Hampton Plains Company and hoped to build a railway from their newly built jetty to Hampton Plains, which is located north of Fraser Range. After some later extensions, this jetty was 300 metres long. In 1900, a tramline was built from the Newtown Jetty to the customs shed on James Street so that imported goods could clear customs. The ambitious plans of the Esperance Bay Land Company did not come to pass, and the jetty fell into disrepair and later was sold to a local who dismantled it and sold off the timber.

Castletown (Newtown) Jetty

Soon after the Newtown Jetty was built, work began on the James Street Jetty, or Town Jetty. Built in 1895, the James Street Jetty was required for the influx of goods coming into town during the time of the gold rush in the Goldfields. Almost as soon as the original jetty was completed, it required extensions, due to the high demand of ships wanting to dock in town. The extensions were delayed, due to a workers’ strike and delays in getting wood. The jetty extensions were opened in 1898.

The Town Jetty was connected by a railway line to the customs shed and the railway yard (where the Museum and Museum Village are now). The Town Jetty was then over a kilometre long. In the late 1920s, concerns were raised about the structure of the Town Jetty, leading to a push for a new jetty to be built. When the Tanker Jetty was built, the Town Jetty was still used for fishing and recreation. Over time, the structure became more unsound and despite a push for it to be preserved, the Town Jetty was demolished in 1979, using explosives to remove the pile stumps. Some of the timber was salvaged and the rest was left on the beach for locals to collect.

In 1970, the jetty was damaged when the oil tanker Hemiglypta drifted after her anchor failed, crashing into the jetty and causing structural damage to 105 feet of the jetty. In 1986, a fire broke out on the jetty, causing damage to a five-metre section about 500 metres from shore. In 1988, a broken section of jetty was removed, leaving a small platform separated from the main

section of the jetty. As early as the 1980s, concerns were raised about the condition of the jetty and in 1987, the Save the Esperance Tanker Jetty Association was formed. This group raised money and lobbied the council, and much needed maintenance work was carried out on a sagging section of the jetty, including driving in new piles. The Save the Jetty Association also carried out busy bees, painting railings and carrying out maintenance. In 2015, the Tanker Jetty was assessed and due to its unsafe condition, it was closed. In 2019, the process of demolishing the jetty began, much to the sadness of many locals who had grown up walking and fishing on the jetty.

In 1977, another small jetty was built at Taylor Street, to serve the needs of the commercial fishing fleet. The commercial fishing boats moved out to Bandy Creek Boat Harbour when it was opened in 1983, and the Taylor Street Jetty is now used by tourist and recreational boats.

In April of this year, construction started on the replacement Jetty which is being built on the same site at Hannett Point, now known as the Jetty Headland. The projected completion date for this jetty, which will be 415 metres long, is February 2021. Tourists and locals alike are looking forward to once again being able to enjoy a jetty in Esperance.

Sailing ship berthed at the old town jetty

Local MP for the Kanowna electorate, Emil Nulsen, was the driving force behind the building of the New Jetty, which was needed as the Town Jetty fell into disrepair. The first pile was driven in during January 1933. The jetty, which came in at just over 870 metres long, cost 70,000 pounds, a lot of money for the time. The New Jetty, which opened in 1935, was located at Hannett Point, named after Ben and Caroline Hannett, some of the earliest settlers in the town. It was officially known as the Esperance Deepwater Jetty, but was referred to by locals as the New Jetty. Later, this jetty became known as the Tanker Jetty because it was used to berth tankers which brought oil to the town up until 1976, when the Port was opened and began to serve as a docking place for ships.

The last tanker to dock at the Tanker Jetty was the BP Enterprise in 1977.

The jetty became a popular place for fishing and recreation. An artificial reef was created at the end of the jetty, becoming a habitat for marine life and a great location for scuba diving.

Siam Thai Cuisine

Siam Thai Cuisine is owned by Esperance resident of 14 years, Sarinee Yingprasert, and her nephew, Danny Yingprasert. Danny is a chef of 20 years, training in Thailand and having worked in both Australia and New Zealand. His resume includes Sydney institution Chat Thai and, most recently, Bangkok Street Thai Grill House in Victoria Park.

He’s arrived in Esperance for a sea change and it doesn’t get much closer to the sea than the old Ocean Blues site on The Esplanade.

The menu is exactly what you’d expect of a good Thai. A plethora of curries, noodle dishes, spicy salads and stir fries. We wanted to order one of everything but managed to show a little restraint. Upon Sarinee’s recommendation, we went for the massaman beef and weren’t disappointed.

Slow cooked to perfection, the beef was melt-in-yourmouth tender. An absolute must. We can’t get enough of Thai curries, so we also tried the red curry with tofu. Mildly spiced but very flavoursome, we all went back for seconds.

The som yum (papaya salad) was also bang on. We opted for medium spice and it definitely had kick, but it’s citrussy flavours were so refreshing paired with the rich and creamy curries. The pad kee mao was a hot highlight and another must, though if you’re sensitive to chilli, perhaps try the pad see ew instead. For our veggie fix, we ordered the pad kratiem prik Thai (garlic and pepper stir fry), which was both fresh and delicious. We washed it all down with a couple of glasses of cheap rosé (booze is BYO) and then rolled home very content.

Our overall thoughts? We’ll be back. Quite possibly weekly.

Siam Thai Cuisine is a very welcome addition to Esperance’s dining scene. Not since the late1990s have we had a Thai restaurant in town and boy oh boy, it’s been a long 20-or-so years without one. When we first heard whisperings of a Thai restaurant opening, we were excited (this is the understatement of 2020). Judging by Siam Thai Cuisine’s bookings, we weren’t the only ones.

Since opening in mid-November, they’ve been fully booked every night.

The Tide Turns Four!

In December 2016, the first issue of Esperance Tide rolled off the home printer and onto the streets of Esperance. What began as a project to kill time between jobs, the Tide took off and soon became a fulltime gig for its founder, Bronte Vincent. This month, the wholly locally owned and operated publication turns four. We wanted to say cheers!

Bronte, who worked as a graphic designer with Community Newspaper Group for almost six years, began Esperance Tide as a guide to what’s on. She planned on publishing just four issues over two months, each of which would contain information about upcoming events, a dining guide and quirky community contributions (some of which remain in the Tide today, like Bush Banter and The Bridge). However, after positive feedback from the community and sufficient advertising to sustain the publication, she scrapped the idea of stopping after four issues and powered on.

In little more than a year, Esperance Tide went from a 12-page black and white publication spat out of a printer Bronte bought on Gumtree, to almost double the size and full colour, printed at a newspaper printing press in Mandurah. This month, the Tide celebrates its biggest issue yet at 40 pages. “The Tide has evolved organically,” Bronte said. “It’s no longer just where to eat and where to see live music but is now also a space to promote small businesses and recognise people doing amazing things in this town.”

Of course, the growth of the Tide could not be possible without the support of the community – those who contribute to it, those who advertise in it, those who distribute it and those who read it. “Esperance is incredibly community-minded,” Bronte said. “This is reflected by the Tide, not just in its content but also by how many people have backed it from the start. It’s only a small team that put the Tide together but keeping it going? That’s a community effort.”

It’s been a hell of a year for regional print publications across Australia. In April, the closure of The Esperance Express, our local rag since 1973, left the community without its only printed source of news, sport and classifieds. Esperance Tide was approached (more than once!) about filling this void. But while we’ve ramped up our local content, introduced Sports Shorts and begun printing classifieds, we’ve concluded that the Tide is not a space for hard news. As stated on the inside cover of each issue, the Tide “shares our community’s most uplifting and inspiring stories. We strive to support small business and community events, and champion the heroes that reside within our region.”

Stanley Paul Starcevich

If you look behind the scenes, you’ll often find selfless, generous people who give their time and energy to great causes. Here is one of our inspiring ‘hidden heroes’ who make this community such a wonderful place.

Last month, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, was Remembrance Day. This special day honours members of our Armed Forces, particularly those who gave their lives in service of their country. In light of that, our Hidden Hero for this month is particularly relevant.

Stanley Paul Starcevich is a veteran of the Korean War. He is a life member of the RSL, and an active community member. He is always on the lookout for ways that he can help Diggers, and he also cuts wood for ‘old people’, although he is a sprightly 89 years old himself!

Stanley grew up on a farm at Grass Patch, before leaving and joining the armed forces. He served in the Korean War and was proud to help those who needed it in their time of need and fight for other people’s freedoms. In 2011, the South Korean Embassy invited Stanley and other Korean veterans back to Korea as a sign of their ongoing gratitude.

Stanley was honoured by the invitation and took them up. Upon arrival in South Korea, he was impressed to see how much the nation had changed, and how prosperous it had become and felt a sense of pride knowing the part he played in that.

After leaving the Army, he lived in New South Wales with his wife for a while, however in 1994, Stanley decided that he would spend his retirement years back in Esperance. He loves the lifestyle here, and is an avid swimmer and snorkeler, and enjoys walking and camping in the beautiful Esperance surrounds.

Stanley is known as a true gentleman and a generous person who cares for others, including his ailing wife, and others in the community. When presented with his Hidden Hero award, Stanley was surprised at the recognition, saying, “I didn’t do anything special, I just do what normal people should do every day.” He is truly an unsung hero and is our very well deserving Hidden Hero of this month.

While cruising the coast of Esperance you might feel the urge to burst into song when viewing the remarkable Melaleuca pentagona, which is bursting with purple pompom like flowers at the moment.

Tis the season to be jolly! With this past year being nothing like we have ever experienced, the line from this old Christmas carol could not be truer. Jolly sounds a little hollow but focusing on what we truly value can help set us up for a much happier and fulfilling festive season. With the pandemic and the shut downs that have affected all of us in some way, it is reported that there has been a decline in consumerism. Who needs new clothes if you have nowhere to go? Those that watch these trends say that as we emerge there is a want to continue with a simpler life. If this is your experience then Christmas is a wonderful time to express what you value by slowing down, simplifying your gift giving and enjoying this time with friends and family in a fuss-free way. May your wish for yourself this holiday season be to share moments of peace, calm, and joy.

This plant will usually grow to about three metres tall but will dwarf itself when growing in exposed conditions along the coast. It loves our gutless sands and can withstand extreme coastal weather. The pentagona is a very compact shrub, so it’s perfect for windbreaks and can be trimmed to be a very neat hedge.

The ‘Little Penta’ has been bred from its larger counterpart to be a smaller version that only grows to about half a metre - great for smaller gardens.

Both varieties are low maintenance, drought-resistant, loved by bees and butterflies and are great for coastal gardens.

Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart When I first saw Shuggie Bain, the first thing I thought was how much I loved the cover. It was a book that I was drawn to immediately. Fast forward and Shuggie Bain won the 2020 Booker Prize.

A debut novel written by Douglas Stuart, Shuggie Bain tells the story of Hugh ‘Shuggie’ Bain, living in 1980’s Glasgow with his glamourous alcoholic mother and older half-brother Leek. Surviving on Agnes Bain’s pension cheques, Shuggie manages to hold back enough money for food before Agnes spends the rest on her poison of choice. While it sounds like a book full of misery, Stuart manages to stuff this book full of vitality, humour and hope, washed down with a good dose of Scottish brogue.

Shuggie is a gentle soul and holds hope that he can somehow save his mother, all the while Agnes believes she is a step up from the other struggling wives on the street, with her tidy house. Shuggie Bain is unashamedly exact about the minutiae of poverty, living in Pithead, a village built to service a coal mine. Stuart takes us into the landscape and Shuggies’s life: “The land had been turned inside out…The black slag hills stretched for miles like the waves of a petrified sea.”

But through all the misery, bullying by snotty nosed children, unemployed broken men and hard women, you always feel that Shuggie will make it. This kind gentle boy, who grew up fast and was made all the stronger for taking care of his mother has become the author of the most fabulous novel.

Summer Terrine This terrine is one of those desserts that is as impressive as it is simple. A frozen treat with all our favourite summer flavours, we guarantee it’ll be a winner at your Christmas table. It only takes ten minutes to whip together (plus freezing), giving you time to focus on more important things. Oh, and we don’t recommend giving this recipe to those who ask – it’s so easy, it’s actually a bit embarrassing.

Method

565g canned lychees in syrup, drained (see tip) 1 fresh mango 1L mango sorbet, slightly softened 270mL coconut cream Toasted coconut flakes, to serve Grated rind of one lime, to serve

1. Line a loaf tin with baking paper, allowing the two long sides to overhang.

2. Roughly chop the mango and half the lychees.

3. Combine the fruit with the softened sorbet and coconut cream in a bowl.

4. Transfer to the loaf tin and smooth the surface. Cover with cling wrap and freeze overnight.

5. Turn the terrine onto a serving platter and top with the remaining lychees, along with the coconut chips and lime rind. Merry Christmas!

Tide Tip: Don’t waste the syrup from the canned lychees. Pour a little into your prosecco and you’ve got yourself a cocktail!

ESHS Girls Academy have had a successful partnership with ENA for five years now, encouraging education through netball. They presented ENA with a framed certificate and photos of the Girls Academy Diamonds teams for the last five years.

Esperance Cycling Club had their final Cloud 11 Challenge on the Kart Club track (thanks Kart Club!) on November 8. Participants ranged from daredevil race enthusiasts to tiny tots in a mix of fun and timed events. November 22 saw the club take to mountain bikes for the Brewery Social Ride, which saw about a dozen riders venture through the lakes then scale up through the quarry, before returning to Lucky Bay Brewing for a few cold ones. December 20 will be a ride up Dempster Road and Christmas event at the brewery. Esperance Badminton Association Badminton will play final games for the year on Monday 14 December at 7pm and Wednesday 16 December at 9:30am. As the golfing calendar drew to a close after a difficult year, it was good to see that some things remained the same. Brad Lewis was named the men’s champion for the third consecutive year. Brad’s wife Chris carried him across the line to win the Camplin sponsored Mixed Fours Championship for the second year, winning from Sharon Southall and Ken Hocking who were also runners up in 2019. Robin Davis broke a 28-year drought in a close contest to be ladies champion for 2020.

Council Connections Shire Wins Volunteer Award

The Shire of Esperance was named as a winner of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ Volunteer Employer Recognition Awards (VERA) for their support of volunteers within the organisation. The VERAs acknowledge the significant contribution made by employers and self-employed volunteers in the delivery of emergency services in Western Australia. Esperance Shire President Ian Mickel said he was thankful the Shire was acknowledged with the award. “Esperance is a town that runs on the good will and hard work of numerous volunteers,” he said. “I thank all of Esperance’s volunteers from the bottom of my heart for all their generosity.”

2020 NAIDOC Week Celebrations The official opening of this year’s NAIDOC week was hosted by the Shire of Esperance and Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Aboriginal Corporation (ETNTAC) on November 9. The opening was followed by a week of celebrations held across Australia celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme was ‘Always Was, Always Will Be.’ ETNTAC Chairperson Gail Reynolds-Adamson said the theme resonated with all traditional owners and their journey to have their native title recognised. “Our spiritual connection and responsibility to care for country is fundamental to who we are as Aboriginal people, it is an obligation that has been passed down to us from our Elders and is what we must gift to the next generation,” she said.

Esperance Business COVID Recovery Program Open The Esperance Business COVID Recovery Program, administered by the Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry and supported by the Shire of Esperance, was officially opened to applications from small businesses last month. The program aims to support the local small business sector by assisting with payments of up to $1000 to help ensure stronger COVID-19 resilience. The initiative draws from a pool of $50,000, with a fifth of the funds to be used for administrative costs, generously donated by mining and exploration company IGO Limited for COVID-19 recovery projects earlier this year. Eligible businesses must fulfil a number of requirements. Applications to the program closed on December 1, however round two of the program is expected to be confirmed later in 2021.

Holiday Retail Days Extended In a win for local business, the Shire of Esperance’s application to extend retail trading hours over the Christmas/New Year period was accepted by the State Government. At the October Ordinary Council Meeting, Council endorsed a request for three additional trading days over the busy holiday period for the whole of the Esperance Shire. Shire of Esperance CEO Shane Burge said the extension was good news for local business operators. “We need to make sure our local businesses can capitalise on the higher-thannormal numbers Esperance is expected to receive over this period,” he said.

Three Indigenous Esperance police officers were recognised for their service to the force with an Aboriginal Service Medal.

Senior Constable Carolyn Petersen, Customer Service Officer Marilyn Jackson and Constable Maddison Ugle, who also received a WA Cadets Medal, were awarded in a ceremony at Twilight Beach on November 6.

Speaking of our police, three Esperance police officers were recognised for acts of bravery at a ceremony in Perth on November 5. Senior Constable John Greenlass, Constable William Wu and Constable Iain Mack Johnston were involved in disarming and arresting a local man in May. Sen. Const. Greenlass was awarded a Cross for Bravery, while Const. Wu and Const.

Johnston were awarded Special Commendations.

Pink Lake Butchers took home six prizes at the Perth Royal Smallgoods Awards, after entering the contest for the first time.

Competing against some big names in the industry, including Mondo Doro and D’Orsogna, the local butchers won three gold and three bronze awards. Receiving highest marks were their coppa, whole pancetta and sliced pancetta.

Esperance was recognised in a report as one of 50 regional towns in Australia with the potential to create its own community-funded and owned renewable power station. The Local Power Plan, developed by Victorian Federal MP Helen Haines, detailed how communities like Esperance could generate economic activity by selling power sourced from wind and/or solar farms. A similar initiative is already in place in Denmark WA.
