This month we headed out to Gibbo for a chat with Wayne at Gibson Soak Water Co. Wayne has been supplying Esperance and surrounds with drinking water for 30 years. We all know how rough the tap water is in town, so we’d like to say a big thanks to Wayne for saving us (and our coffee machines!) from enduring the wretched stuff. From bottling water by hand to using state-of-the-art technology, Gibson Soak Water Co has come a long way over the last few decades. Sit down with a nice cold glass of H20, then check out the story on page 4.

We also caught up with local couple Greg and Tanya Shipley, who are raising much needed funds for Ukrainian refugees. Greg and Tanya spent an extended period in Ukraine back in 2019, describing the country as “staggeringly beautiful.” They’ve remained friends with many of the people they met and are now doing what they can to show them their support. Read the story and find out how to donate on page 8.

Getting away from the hustle and bustle of the thriving metropolis of Esperance for a night under the stars was absolute bliss. Get the lowdown on going out there on page 12. 30 Years of

The town of Gibson has a rich history, one that began with the discovery of a fresh water soak back in the 1890s and led to the establishment of the Gibson Soak Hotel, a popular waterhole for creatures of the human and animal kind alike. The history of the soak lives on, in our pints at the pub and through a local water bottling company – Gibson Soak Water Co.

In the early 1990s, a Gibson local had the bright idea to establish a bottling factory that would enable him to share this pure spring water with the region. And so began Gibson Soak Water Co, named after the soak’s discoverer, William Gibson. The idea was dreamt up - like many good ideas - while Wayne Brennard was sitting on a bulldozer. “The idea rattled around in my head for several years, before I eventually decided to give it a crack,” recalls Wayne. He spent the next few years researching the market, visiting factories over east, investing in equipment, and finding the right water source. Wayne eventually bought the old Gibson Clover Works shed, before bottling his first water in 1993, by hand.

Wayne is passionate about the history of the area. Following the discovery of gold around Norseman in the 1890s, there was huge demand for freight cartage from the port town of Esperance to the Goldfields. The road was a dry and dusty one, scarred with the ruts of the horse and camel teams. There were a lot of thirsty people travelling the road, and water was a precious commodity. One of the families that travelled this route were the Gibsons. During one of their journeys, they set up camp for the night about 10 hours from Esperance. One of the Gibson boys, William, came across a patch of rushes as he was rounding up horses early in the morning. Digging down, he found signs of water. No one back at the camp believed him, until they eventually saw the water for themselves. And so “a little bit of Western Australian history was made,” and this place became known as Gibson’s Soak. ⟶

Back in the factory, the water embarks on a process of filtration and sterilisation, before being bottled into 600ml, 15L and 19L bottles, which are then labelled and loaded onto palettes or into crates, before being distributed throughout the region. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Wayne reflects on how far the factory and business have come. “The process has come a long way, from the days of hand bottling and labelling, to now pumping out hundreds of bottles within an hour thanks to modern technology,” he says. From the factory in Gibson, the water is delivered to Esperance, Hopetoun, Ravensthorpe and Kalgoorlie.

Wayne says that the biggest change in the business was when he went to Kalgoorlie to source more clients. “A few years into it, I jumped in the car with a few cartons of water and began doing the rounds,” he says. “They gave it a taste, and me a go, and I quickly realised there was business out there – I just had to grow to keep up with it.” Wayne established a delivery base and office in Kalgoorlie early on, and 75 per cent of his business is now Kalgoorlie-based.

Wayne says it took a good 10 years of nurturing the business before he could say it was going to work. “I got to a point after a couple of years where I just told myself I couldn’t stop. I’d put too much in, especially as I didn’t get any government funding or any loans,” he says. “It was a slow process, but you’ve just got to keep moving forward, because if you stand still, you get nowhere.”

Talking about the future of Gibson Soak Water Co, Wayne says it may soon be time to hand over the reins.

“This business can go another 100 per cent easily, with someone bigger and better than me,” he says. “I’ve got a dozen ideas on how it can grow still, but I’m running out of steam, and age is catching up with me. It’s nearly time where someone with the resources and steam could come on board to take it to the next step.” Wayne says when he does eventually have a few days off, he’ll probably go and see if the ocean is still blue, and spend some time on his old cars, one of which is a 1929 Model A truck - the same vehicle that Wayne used to deliver water when he started the business all those years ago.

When local farmers Greg and Tanya Shipley visited Ukraine in 2019, they fell in love with the country that they describe as “staggeringly beautiful.” They travelled extensively throughout Ukraine, with the time they spent in the city of Lviv, in the country’s west, a real highlight. Lviv is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is filled with historic buildings, stunning architecture, and welcoming locals.

The same day Greg and Tanya arrived in Lviv, they met a group of young people from the local Resurrection Church, which has a determined focus on helping the disadvantaged in the city and beyond. This strong sense of mission resonated with Greg and Tanya, and they spent time getting to know people from the church. Resurrection Church helps to run an orphanage, homes for the elderly, summer camps for children with disabilities, and preschools for children who don’t fit into the mainstream education system, among other social justice projects. One of the people Greg and Tanya most connected with was an English language interpreter, Solya Petrenko. Since their trip, they have stayed in contact with Solya, and were even invited to attend her wedding. Greg and Tanya have also remained close friends with several other wonderful people they met in Ukraine.

When Russian forces first invaded Ukrainian territory in February, Greg and Tanya reached out to Solya and some of their other Ukrainian friends. “We wanted to know how we could help,” Tanya says. From the beginning of the war, Ukrainians began fleeing the country, many of them travelling through Lviv, near the Polish border.

Resurrection Church was already doing what it could to provide support. Greg and Tanya say the church has taken in 150 refugees, so many that they don’t have the floor space to take any more. They are also working alongside the Red Cross to feed refugees at the Lviv train station, many of whom have had to flee their homes, and are now desperate for a ticket anywhere out of the country. Greg and Tanya immediately sent some money to help with the relief efforts. Since that time, their initial desire to help has grown stronger. Along with their church, Esperance Christian Family, and others who have contributed, Greg and Tanya have already raised over $52,000 for the relief effort in Ukraine – and they want to raise far more than that.

While Ukrainian people have experienced war, invasion, and tragedy many times throughout their country’s history, Greg and Tanya’s friends in Lviv feel a sense of disbelief that this kind of thing could be happening in the 21st Century. Throughout the city, priceless historic statues, stained glass windows, and other artefacts are being removed and wrapped in preparation for the

attacks that they expect. Resurrection Church’s sense of mission is stronger than ever, as they do all they can to help the refugees in their midst. Solya explains that among the most vulnerable are the many traumatised children taking refuge in the church, and the church members are trying to provide them with comfort and some distraction from their awful predicament. Solya’s father-in-law and his brother are also regularly risking their lives by transporting urgent food and medical supplies through the night to towns that have had their food supply cut off as a result of the Russian invasion.

“It’s so good to do something,” Solya says. “We are weeping, but we are still working.”

More than three million refugees have already fled Ukraine into neighbouring countries, almost all women, children, and the elderly. Within Ukraine’s borders, people are also fleeing from the areas hit hardest by the Russian attacks, many of them ending up in Lviv.

As food shortages and interrupted supply chains cause prices to go up across the country, Resurrection Church is spending more than US$1500 a day on food for the refugees. Greg and Tanya have started a Go Fund Me to continue raising money, and they are hoping Esperance locals will contribute, get involved, and come up with creative ways to help raise funds for the cause. As the bombing comes closer to Lviv, Greg and Tanya are deeply concerned for their friends, and are doing all they can to continue sending support and encouragement. Solya explains that while the financial support is incredibly valued, the donations also show that people are standing with them. “Knowing that we are not alone, this is what sustains us,” she says.

Council Connections Tjaltjraak Boodja Park The previously un-named Reserve 41097, inland of the Duke of Orleans Bay, will soon have an official title after Council supported the application to name it Tjaltjraak Boodja Park. The application now heads to Landgate for approval, with signage to be arranged once it has state sanction. The proposed naming was put out for public consultation over summer, with the majority of submissions being supportive. The naming of Reserve 41097 will not affect any existing place names, but it will certainly bring to mind the wealth of knowledge and lived experience held by our local first nations peoples and recognise the cultural significance of the area.

Shire Supports Shark Attack Response Council resolved to support the position of the Esperance Ocean Safety and Support Group and officially invite the Minister for Fisheries and the WA Premier to visit Esperance to witness conditions on the ground and discuss ways to deal with issues of ocean safety. The Ocean Safety and Support Group’s Position on Esperance White Shark Attack Response requests that the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - Fisheries build capacity within the Esperance community to enable an immediate and effective response to white shark imminent threats and attacks, and Council are happy to support the local community by backing this call.

James Street Cultural Precinct takes the next step Realisation of the James Street Cultural Precinct is one step closer after Council endorsed the James Street Cultural Precinct Development Plan. Securing a suitably qualified consultant for delivery of a detailed concept design, business case and costings for the priority development packages is about to get underway. The Cultural and Tourism Hub package of the Development Plan, with the library as the major component, will be delivered first. Esperance’s existing library is coming to the end of its life and it is a Shire priority to deliver a modern replacement facility to the community. The Museum Village is to be retained in its current location, leaving the option to relocate into the Precinct core open for the future and improving connectivity with the rest of the Precinct in the meantime.

On the road to better safety Work has begun on two important road safety projects. Fully funded by the joint State and Federal Government Regional Road Safety Program, completed works are expected to reduce run-off-road and head-on car accidents for Eleven Mile Beach Road and Fisheries Road from Ridgelands Road to the end of the sealed section by between 43 per cent and 67 per cent. With the rate of fatal and serious injury road crashes five times higher in regional WA than the same type of crash in the metropolitan area, the Shire are committed to continuing work on, and investigations into, safer roads for the community. The projects will seal road shoulders where required, provide a wider and more forgiving road environment, install Audio Tactile Line Marking to warn drivers when they are leaving the road, and provide centre and edge line marking where missing.

An Overnight Adventure to

Roughly 170 kilometres north of Esperance is Peak Charles, an ancient granite rock towering 651 metres above the dense scrub of the Great Western Woodlands.

Smack bang in the middle of the mallee trees, it’s pretty spectacular, visible from 50 kilometres away in all directions. It’s a beautiful spot to visit for a decent hike, some real space, and a good old dose of the great outdoors. ⟶

History Peak Charles and Peak Eleanora are the result of a buried bedrock that formed between two and three million years ago, the peaks themselves forming from a single body of magma that was forced into a fault in the granite. About 40 million years ago, both peaks were islands, and you can see wavecut patterns and platforms on the upper slopes.

Karrukarrunya holds a lot of history and cultural significance to the Ngadju people. It is a place where the Ngadju people collect traditional foods and plants for making medicine.

Peak Charles was also a place where the Ngadju people and surrounding tribes would come to meet. In 1849, surveyor and explorer John Septimus Roe explored the region and was responsible for naming Peak Charles and its companion Peak Eleanora after the then Governor and his sister.

Getting there The track into Peak Charles is gravel and a four wheel drive is recommended. The tracks can be muddy and impassable when wet as well, so avoid going during or

after big rains. There are several ways to get there, the main routes being either up along Cascade Road and onto Neds Corner Road, through North Cascade and approaching the Peaks from the south, or along the highway through Salmon Gums, before turning onto the Kumari-Lake King Road, which then hits Peak Charles Road.

This is the route we took, which was only 44 kilometres on gravel and a really pleasant drive. All the roads are clearly marked with good signage.

Camping The campground is located at the base of the peak, with spacious sites suited to tents, swags, rooftop tents, and campervans. The site has all the necessities, including bush toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits with hot pits provided (always check fire restrictions before using). No camping fees apply, and the sites are first come, first served. Bring your own drinking water. The campground is a really nice sheltered base to explore from, with a stunning view of the peak overhead. There were a few jaw dropping moments while we consumed our morning coffee.

Hiking There are three options to get those amazing views and the adrenaline pumping. All walks require enclosed, non-slip footwear, a hat, and a first aid kit. Only undertake sections that suit how fit you are, how well equipped you are, and the weather conditions. Beware! The moss over the rocks becomes extremely slippery when wet, take extreme care near steep slopes and stay away from cliff edges.

M US H R O O M R O C K HEIGH T: 295 metres TOTA L DI STAN CE FR O M C A M P : 600 metres return (allow 45 minutes) This trail takes you through the woodland and across mildly undulating terrain with loose rocks to exposed rock at the base of Peak Charles. From this point, the trail is marked with white-tipped poles. There is some high stepping involved at this point, and you may start to sweat. This section of the trail ends at Mushroom Rock, adequately named for its shape.

C EN T R A L R I D GE HEIGH T: 460 metres TOTA L DI STAN CE FR O M C A M P : Total distance from camp: 2.2 kilometres return (allow two hours) This is a cool climb, up through the bush to big boulders and rock faces. There are a few spots here to perch up out of the wind and take in the view.

Caution: Steep incline, rough and unstable surfaces, slippery when wet, and windy when she’s blowing!

PE AK CH AR L E S S UM M IT HEIGH T: 651 metres TOTA L DI STAN CE FR O M C A M P : 3.4 kilometres (allow three hours) This section requires foot and hand placement in crevices to pull yourself up in places - they say you must be able to lift your own body weight several times.

There are no markers at this point, and coming down, you have to crab crawl on your hands and feet with your back to the rock. Caution: Very steep incline. Rough surfaces and very slippery when wet. Strong winds.

Being a biodiversity hotspot, the bush is filled with a variety of orchids and wildflowers growing on the slopes. The rock is also home to several pairs of majestic wedge tailed eagles, which you may spot circling high in the sky. You might even see a burrell (bush turkey) or gnanumarra (mallee hen).

HOT T IP: Break up the trip back to town by treating yourself to one off the wood at the Gibson Soak Hotel.

THE BRIDGE Late last year, WAM (West Australian Music) rolled into Esperance to undertake its latest regional recording project. The resulting double album is soon to be released, with single ‘Flowers Blooming’ by local Rachel Vibart available now to check out across all platforms. ‘Flowers Blooming’ is a stunning debut single by Vibart, her journey as a singer songwriter reaching new heights thanks to the excellent opportunity provided by WAM. One side of the double album will feature Esperance artists with the other showcasing original compositions from the Ngaanyatjarra lands. Local acts worked with some of WA’s finest producers in Andy Lawson, Dan Carrol, James Newhouse and Sean Lillico, with a portable recording studio installed within Esperance’s historic Bijou Theatre. Working in this stunning local space had a profound impact upon the project overall, with artists commenting on the setting and its impact upon the creative process. WAM’s regional representative Nigel Bird, supported by his regional assistant Izzy Bartlett, have been instrumental in driving the project forward, with a final effort currently in the works to see the completed tracks distributed Australiawide. Stay tuned - the full release date is set for the first week of April.

Car Park Social continue a solid run of singles with their latest offering ‘Over The Counter’ released on March 25.

Dan Seinor’s exceptional vocal and deft lyrics rise to the fore on this one, resulting in a rocking tune with an overall interesting song structure. The lads headed back to Coolgardie to work with Drew Goddard and Brenton Mynell to capture the tracks, with mixing duties taken on

by Andy Lawson. This year is shaping up bloody well for Car Park Social. Head to your favourite platform to check out the latest tune.

I must say, I’m looking forward to some chocolate hot cross buns over the next few weeks (potentially my highlight of the Easter festivities). Delicious treats aside we have a great live music schedule chipping away at Lucky Bay Brewing, with a quality Sunday session in place for Easter Sunday featuring Joe Franzone, Scotty Timmins and yours truly. Head on out and support your locals.

Multi-instrumentalist Shmon’e returns to the brewery later in the month on April 29. I’m yet to catch the lad perform live though by all accounts it is something to behold.

We also have a classic open mic night scheduled for the Cannery Arts Centre on April 22 from 5.30pm. I look forward to catching y’all out and about.

Mylene Speelman van Heijster Mylene Speelman van Heijster, better known locally as Milly, is a Dutch artist who ended up in Esperance with her husband and their two young sons after an advertisement in a medical magazine lured the family into a year-long Australian ‘mediventure’. After 12 months, they returned to Amsterdam, but soon made the decision to emigrate to Australia for good. When Milly’s not upcycling materials to create intricate jewellery or oversized sculptures, you’ll find her behind the counter at Cloud Eleven Coffee + Tea. Tell us about your art.

I create jewellery, mostly made from buttons in combination with other materials: silver, semi-precious stones and freshwater pearls. I source vintage materials and recycled silks from all over the place to make pieces of clothing, drawings, prints and quilts. I have even created lampshades from bottle caps. Anything is possible when you upcycle. Over the last few years, I’ve also created larger works with help of community members in partnership with Esperance Community Arts, including the yarn-bombed wind turbine at the museum for Festival of the Wind, and the Christmas baubles project, in which 255 yarn baubles were hung in the Post Office Square tree.

Why buttons?

When we first came to Esperance, I was looking forward to creating jewellery as I had just finished my gold and silversmithing degree. I brought my toolkit but unfortunately could not get hold of the materials, larger tools, and machinery I needed to work with the metals.

To get over my frustration of not being able to make something, I literally bought a bucket full of buttons from the op-shop and started getting creative with that.

You’ve been involved in the last three Community Sculpture Projects for the Esperance Wildflower Festival. How did you enjoy the process?

I very much enjoyed working with other artists and learning from them, and meeting people from the community and hearing their stories and ideas, then using them to create the end product, so the sculpture could become a community project. I also enjoyed looking for discarded materials to recycle and work with - all the sculptures were made from mostly recycled materials that otherwise would have ended up in landfill.

And I enjoyed dreaming up something large, impressive and inspiring that pushed our boundaries and allowed other creatives to partake in the artistic process. I love that the sculptures are on permanent show for all to see in the Esperance Community Arts building. I’m very excited for this year’s festival and project because the theme is ‘carnivorous plants’ and I have always been intrigued by them.

What does the rest of the year hold?

Finishing off and refining new jewellery designs. I have many loose ends to tie up and numerous new ideas are in my head that need to come to fruition. I am in the process of making upcycled silk winter scarves, quilted jackets from vintage fabrics, and wanting to resume the setup of my eCommerce website. There is also this idea of organising an exhibition of all my work!

ARTS & CULTURE Three Artists Maybe it’s something to do with the natural beauty of this region, or maybe there’s something in the water, but we have always had an abundance of talented artists in Esperance. This month, three unique local artists, all with different but complementary styles, will exhibit their works at the Cannery Arts Centre. This long running exhibition opens on April 7 and runs right through to May 19. Artists Tammy Andrews, Marcia Leonard, and Patrick McCarthy will share the gallery space in this exhibition, Three Artists.

Artist Tammy Andrews’ work will be familiar to many people in Esperance. Tammy describes her work for this exhibition as “broad sumptuous seascapes of the south east region, complemented with intimate petite landscape cameos.” Her work often showcases the beautiful landscapes and wildflowers of Esperance in her distinctive style, a hybrid of realist and abstract approaches. Tammy has not exhibited her work in Esperance for a few years, and is looking forward to showcasing her new work in this exhibition.

Patrick McCarthy’s work also draws inspiration from the sea, but uses an entirely different medium.

His ‘Fish On Fish Skins’ are unique portraits of fish featuring dried fish skins. “I adored the textures, patterns and colours in the skins – an example of beauty in nature,” Patrick says. “I wanted to showcase these and not waste the skins.” Patrick’s fish are drawn around the fish skin, and then covered with a layer of transparent resin, before being mounted on timber, often from the old Tanker Jetty.

While many of the fish are from the Southern Ocean, some are sourced from the north of the state as well.

Marcia Leonard’s work also draws inspiration from the natural environment. Her expressive work often utilises mixed media, and explores the links between reality and imagination. As Marcia states, “My paintings and mixed media work appear as dreamlike images in which fiction and reality meet, meanings shift, past and present fuse.” While Marcia’s work has been featured in exhibitions at the Cannery before, this opportunity will allow her to showcase some of her new work.

As each of these three artists have very different techniques, mediums, and approaches to their art, the exhibition will be vibrant and diverse, demonstrating just how lucky we are in Esperance to have so much inspiration on our doorstep, and so many talented artists in our midst.

Five Minutes With

Perth-based singer songwriter Michael Ward heads to Esperance for the first time this month, off the back of the release of his latest single, SWELL. Michael’s music career has seen him slinging the bass guitar in a number of bands, only recently switching into solo mode. He is wasting little time in hitting the road, with 2021 seeing him perform as far afield as Karratha. If you're into an acoustic, roots, and coastal folk vibe, Michael is an artist to catch, acknowledging Xavier Rudd, John Butler and Rodriguez as his key influences.

Thanks so much for joining us Michael! Can you tell us what drove the departure from bands into solo singer/songwriter format?

There’s parts of playing bass guitar in a band that I will always love, that connection with the drummer, locking down a riff, and being the token extravert on stage. But as far as songwriting goes, and creating your own unique sound, playing bass came with its limitations. To have a solo project has been so incredibly liberating. Being able to canvass opinions and input for songwriting but being the master of the final product is huge.

Can you tell us what’s behind the lyrics of your latest single?

It’s about the relationship between a surfer and the ocean. The surfer craves both the adrenaline and rush of the ride, as well as the peace and balance offered while quietly waiting for the next set of waves to roll in. The ocean, like a new young lover, coaxes and chorales him to her, teasing him, begging him to forget his life on land, forget his possessions and purpose, and simply be consumed by her. Despite growing up in the South West and being a lover of the ocean from a very young age, I only learnt

to surf around eight years ago. It’s been an amazing experience and like young love. I like to think that these themes come through both lyrically and in texture with the single SWELL, emphasised beautifully by Rachelle Kearney’s soaring female vocal lines as the ocean.

What acts are you currently listening to?

Locally, I’m a huge fan of Sash Seabourne, Michael Dunstan, and Brooke Bugeja. I love how they write and how they sing, and I envy their abilities. I always have artists like John Butler, Xavier Rudd, and The Waifs on high rotation on Spotify, too. As a 38 year old (boomer alert), I feel compelled to share how amazing apps like Spotify are, where music aligned with your taste is just handed to you on a platter, day in, day out. I often think how limited my music exposure was as a teen compared to the music accessible now and how I’ve been shaped as a result of what I had access to at the time.

When you throw covers into your live set, who do you feel most comfortable covering?

I often start learning a cover because I like it, only to quickly realise that as a soloist or even as a duo the limited depth doesn’t satisfy. So I tend to learn songs that I enjoy playing, partly from a physical component but also from an enjoyment and emotional component. Do I get into this song? Does it give me energy? Do I play this song with confidence? If I tick those boxes then often the song sticks.

Which WA act has most surprised you when sharing a line-up?

Back in the day I would say Karnivool. I did a few gigs supporting them as they were releasing Themata, and they quickly schooled me on how elite they were as musicians and showmen. To execute their songs the way they did was so impressive. I’m not surprised that they continued on to be as successful as they are. Within the last year though, my favourite would be Mandurah/ Freo local, Brooke Bugeja. We met after an open mic last year and when I saw her live at a gig where she was supporting me, I very quickly realised that it is I who should have been supporting her.

Do you have plans to tour outside of WA? Ooh yes! I’m about to record an EP and have already started booking shows in Adelaide, Darwin and Brisbane as the start of a national tour to promote that release.

Over the years I’ve met many amazing musos and I can’t wait to head round Oz with some of them.

How to Produce a Podcast KARLI FLORRISON

Podcasting has only been around since the early 2000s, with the word ‘podcast’ first used in 2004. In the years since then, the popularity of this medium has skyrocketed.

These days, an astonishing 26 per cent of Australians are regular podcast listeners that’s around 5.6 million people!

If you’ve got something to say and the world needs to hear it, you can start a podcast in the comfort of your own home with fairly basic equipment. However, before launching into this brave new world, there are a few things to consider. The first and most important step is deciding on your topic. What do you want to podcast about? There are podcasts on just about every topic imaginable, from niche topics like pens, and The X Files, to current affairs and general interest topics, such as politics and books. Launching a podcast about a broad topic will mean your podcast has a lot of competition – there are hundreds of podcasts about health and wellness, for example. A narrow focus will help to refine your audience, but make sure that there is still enough for you to talk about!

Choose a topic you’re passionate about, otherwise it’s easy to lose interest. While you’re deciding on a topic, you’ll need to think about a few more things. Will you have a co-host? Will you interview people, or will it be a solo show? How often will you release episodes? And, importantly, what are you going to

call your new podcast? Pick a name that tells your audience exactly what to expect from your podcast.

After you’ve answered these important questions, there’s a few more boxes to tick before you’re ready to officially launch your podcast. Here’s what you’ll need:

1. A recording room and some equipment.

Ideally, you need a small room with lots of soft furnishings to absorb sound – a big empty space will mean your podcast sounds echoey or tinny.

A bedroom or even your walk-in wardrobe will work well. You’ll need a computer, and a podcast mic.

Dick’s Electronics has a selection of microphones in stock, and will be able to help you choose something that suits your needs.

2. Recording software.

There are plenty of recording programs available, but Audacity and Garage Band are both free and fairly simple to use. Watch a few tutorials or get a tech-savvy friend to teach you how to use it.

3. A podcast hosting platform, such as Podbean or BuzzSprout.

This is where you’ll upload and store your episodes. Your podcast hosting platform will send your podcast out to all the podcast apps, like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Pocket Casts.

Some platforms are free, but for more options and features, it’s best to pay a little bit for this service.

4. Podcast artwork.

This is a logo for your podcast that will appear as your icon on the podcast apps. Make sure it’s easy to read and features your podcast name.

5. A theme song or intro.

This is not essential – not all podcasts have a theme or intro – but it functions as part of your podcast brand, so it’s at least worth considering. You can download a royalty-free theme song from an online database like Pixabay, you can pay for music from a site such as Audio Jungle, or you can have someone make you a custom theme or introduction.

6. A first episode.

7. An audience.

This is the fun bit! You get to plan, record and edit your first podcast.

When you’re happy that it is interesting and engaging, and you’ve edited out all the ‘ums’ and awkward pauses, you’re ready to upload the episode to your hosting platform. It’s a really great idea to have a couple of episodes ready to go before you launch your podcast.

Share your upcoming podcast episodes on social media, and ask your friends to spread the word. If you want to eventually make some money from your podcast, you’ll need a good-sized audience. The key to building an audience is consistency!

If you create good quality content regularly, then you’ll build a following.

Whether your passion is recapping The Bachelor episodes, diving into true crime, unpacking political issues, or recounting your adventures as you explore the Esperance region, there’s no time like the present for launching your podcast!

In the early years of Esperance’s settlement, almost all communication with the rest of the world was through the ships that arrived in the bay. Even after the telegraph line gave Esperance a faster way to communicate with people in other parts of the country, the mail ships were a vital lifeline for the town, bringing letters, newspapers, and supplies. Aside from transporting mail, one of the most important features of the coastal shipping run was to take the wool clip from Esperance to Perth or Adelaide for sale. Ships would also make stops at nearby settlements at Bremer Bay, Hopetoun, Israelite Bay, and Eucla to deliver mail and collect the wool clip.

In the 1890s, the SS Flinders had a regular run from Adelaide to several coastal towns in WA. The Flinders regularly transported stock from Adelaide to Albany and Fremantle, and also offered a passenger service. In 1895, after the town jetty was completed in Esperance, the SS Flinders began a fortnightly run between Adelaide and Esperance.

Captain Fred Douglas also had a regular mail run from Albany to Esperance in the early years of the settlement, on his ship the Agnes. Douglas also used the Agnes to ship goods along the coast from Fremantle to Eucla. On one of these journeys, in 1892, Douglas anchored the ship at Bremer Bay overnight. She was loaded with a cargo that included 40 tons of sandalwood. That night, a storm blew in, and the Agnes was blown onto the shore, where she was wrecked. While the crew were all safe, and the cargo was able to be salvaged, the wreck of the Agnes delayed the mail to Esperance by two months.

After this incident, Captain Douglas bought a Hobartbuilt schooner called the Grace Darling. He continued his mail run, as well as transporting cargo along the coast, in the new ship, which soon developed quite a name for herself. The Grace Darling was fast, able to make the journey from Albany in 19 hours. She was also involved in the much-publicised rescue of the passengers of the Rodondo steamship, which hit Pollock Reef and sank in 1894. Captain Douglas continued to travel this coastal route until his retirement in 1910. He was presented with a gold watch for 35 years of service to the coastal communities of the state. After his retirement, Douglas lived in his Esperance house Bayview (now called Fairhaven) until his death in 1916.

SS Kybra

Another ship which made the regular journey to Esperance was an iron steamship called the Eucla. This ship began her life as the Wexford, travelling regularly between Ireland and Liverpool, before she was brought to Western Australia to begin a regular run between Fremantle and Esperance in 1913, and renamed the Eucla. By this stage, the State Shipping Service was running the mail service to the coastal towns in WA. Captained by Ernest Douglas, Fred Douglas’s nephew, the Eucla would also travel to her namesake, the settlement Eucla, once every three months, and once a year, she would stop at Israelite Bay to collect the wool clip. In 1931, the ageing and decommissioned Eucla was scuttled in the ship graveyard located at Rottnest Island.

The State Shipping Service commissioned another ship, built in Scotland and completed in 1926.

This ship was named the Kybra, a Nyungar word used by Aboriginal people in the Albany and Busselton areas meaning ‘little ship’. The Kybra travelled from Fremantle to Esperance fortnightly, stopping at coastal towns such as Busselton, Albany, and Hopetoun along the way. Every three months, the Kybra’s journey was extended from Esperance, and she stopped at settlements in Point Malcolm, Israelite Bay, and Eucla. Along with the mail, the Kybra carried food supplies, beer, building materials, and superphosphate. She also carried passengers. In 1940, the Kybra was commandeered for use by the Royal Australian Navy in the

Second World War. She was used as an escort vessel and a training ship for the duration of the war.

She was decommissioned in 1945, and returned to the State Shipping Service. By that time, however, the railway line to Esperance had been completed, and a regular shipping service to Esperance was no longer required. The Kybra was put on a northern run to Port Hedland, despite protests from Esperance people. She was sold in 1958, and scrapped in 1972. During her lifetime with the State Shipping Service, the Kybra made more than 570 voyages out of Fremantle. She was the last vessel to make the regular mail run to Esperance.

Roast Vegetable & Olive Focaccia Sandwich Ingredients

Method

1 loaf Bread Local focaccia 1 small eggplant, sliced into 1cm pieces 1 zucchini, sliced into 1cm pieces 200g roasted peppers from the jar 2 tbsp good quality mayonnaise 4 - 6 slices Swiss cheese

1.

Preheat the oven to 200°C.

2.

Line a large baking tray with baking paper. Add the eggplant and zucchini and roast for about 20 minutes, until soft and slightly golden.

3.

Meanwhile, make the olive spread using a mortar and pestle to crush the garlic cloves into a fine paste. Add the olives and crush, mixing into the garlic. The consistency should be spreadable but still slightly chunky. Add the shallot, olive oil and red wine vinegar and combine.

4.

Slice the focaccia in half, lengthwise. Spread the olive mixture on one half of the bread, and mayonnaise on the other.

5.

Layer the roast vegetables and top with swiss cheese.

6.

To serve, cut the sandwich into as many pieces as preferred.

Olive oil 1 onion, finely sliced 2 spring onions, sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1 small head broccoli, sliced into bite size pieces 1 medium zucchini, sliced in half moons 1 cup frozen peas 2 cups baby spinach leaves, roughly chopped ½ cup sundried tomatoes, roughly chopped 1 tbsp basil pesto 1/4 tsp chilli flakes 2 tbsp Tuscan herb mix Persian feta 8 eggs Salt & pepper

Preheat the oven to 200°C.

2.

Heat 1 - 2 tbsp olive oil in a medium sized fry pan. Add the garlic and onion and fry over a medium heat until soft (about 5 - 10 minutes). Transfer to a 26cm tart dish.

3.

In the same pan, sauté the broccoli until slightly charred, and transfer to the tart dish.

4.

Sauté the zucchini with 1 tbsp of the Tuscan seasoning and the pesto. When the zucchini is starting to colour but is still firm, add the peas and season with salt and pepper. Cook for a further one minute and then transfer to the tart dish.

5.

Add the spinach, sundried tomatoes, chilli flakes and the remaining Tuscan seasoning to the tart dish. Ensure everything is evenly spread out before adding generous chunks of feta across the vegetables.

6.

Whisk the eggs lightly in a medium bowl and season with salt and pepper. Pour over the top of the tart dish. Top with more feta as desired and bake for 25 - 30 minutes or until the egg has puffed up and the top is golden.

7.

Let cool for five minutes in the dish, then carefully remove and top with your preferred garnishes.

When it rains, it pours. You find yourself repeating this on an almost daily basis. You’ve gone from 0 to 100 over the last few years and while there’s no looking back, you do sometimes sneak a peek at simpler times. Living costs have skyrocketed lately, and you’re feeling the pinch. With a heavy focus on money this month, it’s a great time to rework your budget.

As the moon enters its next phase, you’ll be overcome by a sense of financial responsibility, and want to do everything in your power to set yourself up for the future. Use the next cool autumn day to go over your bank statements, and look at ways to save while still having fun.

You’re stuck in a rut, repeating the same routine day in, day out. Do something different this month to break the monotony. Host an afternoon tea at Aunty Joan’s Dolly Mix, take a Beam scooter for a spin, or go see a movie without reading the synopsis. Anything you haven’t done before! It’s easy to get caught in the trap of doing the same ol’ thing but with a little imagination, it’s just as easy to break out of it.

Camp on a remote beach or book a shack at the Duke - it doesn’t matter where you go so long as you give yourself ample opportunity to inhale fresh air and exhale all the stresses of life.

Don’t be too proud to approach your support network because it’s highly likely that they’re more than willing to lend a hand. Think of the many favours you’ve done for them over the years - now it’s their turn to repay you.

BUSH BANTER The Humble Saltbush While everyone says they don’t have a favorite child, I definitely know which plant is my favorite in the garden!

And to many people’s surprise, it’s the common saltbush.

I have two species of saltbush in my garden, the coastal species Atriplex isadea and the inland species Atriplex nummularia. While most plants are often in the garden for flower displays, these guys definitely win on their year-round incandescent silver foliage. The silver foliage provides contrast in my garden, breaking up the dark green strappy kangaroo paws and deep green leaves of a common daisy. In garden design, consideration of foliage is crucial for a balanced palette and, hey, foliage is what you look at for most of the year. Another great thing about the saltbush is it’s a local native, meaning it’s well adapted for deep draining, highly unfertile sandy soils. Believe it or not, I’ve barely watered my saltbush this summer, and it continues through each sunny day to stand proud and strong, waving in the breeze.

News in Brief

Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest met with farmers at the Condingup Tavern to discuss making the Esperance region a green hydrogen hub. Around 40 farmers met with Forrest, Western Australia’s richest man, to hear about his quest to find places with enough wind and sunlight to allow him to export 15 million tonnes of hydrogen to the world by 2030. To make this happen, Forrest needs local farmers to lease him land for wind turbines, solar panels and other infrastructure.

A 20,000 tonne fertiliser storage facility will open in Esperance this month, as CBH dips its toes in the fertiliser industry, currently dominated by

CSBP. The grain handlers have signed a five year agreement with Qube Bulk to use its existing storage facilities on Sims Street.

CBH received its first shipment of fertiliser in April last year, 7000 tonnes of urea from Oman. At present, WA imports around 1.8 million tonnes of fertiliser every year.

Club players ran from Esperance to Hopetoun on March 19 to raise money for McGrath Breast Care Nurses. Player Remy Tobin presented the idea to the club after his stepmother passed away from breast cancer in February.

The 192 kilometre run operated as a series of two kilometre relays,

with a bus transporting runners between legs. Remy’s initial goal was to raise $10,000 but at the time of printing, the event had raised almost double that.

Seven new emergency vehicles with a combined value of more than $2.1 million were delivered to Esperance on March 11. Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson travelled to Esperance to launch the state-ofthe-art fleet, which includes a 4.4 Broadacre Tanker. Esperance is the first region in WA to receive a 4.4 Broadacre Tanker, which can carry 4,000 litres of water, is highly durable, and has greater capability to travel on soft sand and coastal terrain.
