On Saturday night, after we’d finished grooving to Grand Casual at the Esperance, that First World problem we all dread happened to Jesse. She reached into her bag for her phone, and couldn’t feel it.

She rustled through the bag, removed its entire contents, checked side pockets and front pockets. It was gone. As we looked up its whereabouts via ‘Find My iPhone’, Bronte got a call. By the time she’d even realised she’d lost it, someone had handed Jesse’s phone into Esperance Police who then dropped it off at her house. With no idea of the where or who or how, we’ve been humbled by that little story this week. How affirming of what it means to live in a tight-knit community.

Speaking of community, winter sports are about to start and we couldn’t be keener to shake off that post-Easter sugar high comedown. Autumn is proving itself as the best weathered season in Esperance and this weekend in particular is looking like a stellar opportunity to enjoy our great outdoors. We hope you’re reading this from somewhere sundrenched and breezy.

And to any of the kind people involved in Saturday night’s chain of events, we are sending your way all of the love and good karma we can muster. Thanks, Esperance.

FIVE MINUTES WITH: Grand Casual frontman Kyron Smithson Following the release of their debut single ‘Soldiers’, local three-piece Grand Casual is on target for a meteoric rise in the West Australian music scene.

Congrats on the new single! What’s the song about?

Lyrics for me always come last in the songwriting process, to the vocal melody and feel of the song.

The lyrics talk about all the pressure we put on ourselves, it’s about finding yourself. But I like lyrics to be subjective so people can interpret them however they want.

Was it hard to choose just one song?

Definitely. The decision was based probably on feedback from our good friends, and the fact that people liked the song when we played it live. It was about finding a song to reflect our sound and the direction we’re headed sonically.

How do live local gigs help you grow as a band?

Playing live is possibly even more important than rehearsals, the more we play live the better we get. It’s great to keep performing and improving in front of a local crowd so that by the time we play elsewhere, we’re in a good zone and we’ve worked out all the kinks.

What’s the biggest thing you don’t always agree on as a band?

Probably which photos to use for promo pics— we’ve had some funny arguments over that. But we work really well together.

Do you ever get nervous?

Not anymore. But the real quiet gigs are probably more intimidating than others, they expect you to talk more and things like that.

What do you usually do after gigs?

Just keep drinking normally, it’s great to wind down.

What’s your least favourite band you’ve been compared to?

We say our sound is influenced by The Black Keys and Sticky Fingers, but the least favourite comparison is probably Midnight Oil. I hope it’s not because of my dance moves.

What does each member bring to the band?

I guess I drive the organisation and management side of things. [Guitarist, Matt] Cooper is very driven when it comes to working in the studio, making new material. Joe [Franzone, drummer] is certainly the creative flair—he encourages the weirdness, which is golden. It works well when we all meet in the middle.

Out of the three of you, who’s the best cook?

Joe. He says he’s going to open a food van called ‘Jolivers’, something to do with Jamie Oliver. Joe loves his homemade pizzas.

What’s the game plan for Grand Casual?

We’d like to release an EP by the end of the year, we’ve got a few good tours coming up on the horizon and I’m hoping to get to Perth to do a weekend of shows.

Finally, for the record, what’s your favourite indoor plant?

My girlfriend Esther has got me into Elephant Ears.

Grand Casual will play at Cannery Arts Centre on Thursday, April 12. You can listen to ‘Soldiers’ on the Triple J Unearthed website. The music video will be released next week.

It does seem like the roaring forties are supplying swell though!

...or ‘the crystal ball’ This summer has been a so-so year for surf in Esperance.

In other words, pretty poor. Few offshore days and junky swells have meant only the bold and adventurous have had good waves along our coast.

This is set to change as we head into autumn, normally the best time of year for surf. The high pressure systems have started moving north, though they were so far south this year that we mostly scored easterlies with few true offshore north-easterlies. Hopefully, as they move north their rotational winds will provide many offshores over the next couple of months. This time of year is usually the start of prefrontal offshore winds from the northwest.

The dominance of the highs and troughs off the west coast will prevent the north-westerly from arriving any time soon. Troughs seem like permanent features these days, remaining throughout the year where once they were a

In other news, jet ski towers and paddle-ins clashed during cyclone swell on the west coast. The cyclone pumped a northwest swell, offering up spectacular waves but raised the issue of safety and diplomacy in the waves as skis towed in among paddlers in a crowded environment. Some surf breaks overseas have banned tow surfing.

School holidays are upon us. Groms get their well-deserved break from class and will be frothing for waves. Many families come to town as well, and with many interstate and overseas travellers, line ups could get busy.

Yes, plants sure are pretty, and I haven’t seen such a resurgence in indoor plants since the 90s. But did you know there are many health benefits to that pot plant on your bedside table? NASA’s Clean Air Study discovered plants could remove airborne pollutants back in 1989, and a string of experts have spouted the benefits of plants to reduce stress or ease insomnia. So next time you want some greenery in your bedroom, give these varieties a go.

Snake Plant

English Ivy

Snake Plant, or Mother In Law’s Tongue (depending on who you’re married to), is a popular indoor plant because of it’s funky foliage. But popping a few of these bad boys in your room will also turn it into a bonafide nighttime oxygen factory, as well as filter out chemical nasties.

I admit I associate ivy with evil witches from fairy tales, but this sophisticated plant will look great in your boudoir and can also help to ease asthma.

Research found the English variety can remove 78% of airborne mould in 12 hours. Impressive.

Lavender One good sniff of lavender is usually enough to convince most people of its relaxing properties, but research has also shown it can slow down heart rate and lower blood pressure and levels of stress. It’s a good one for all you trendsetters out there—so rustic.

Aloe Vera If you’re lacking in a green thumb, this is the plant for you. Both hardy and handsome, Aloe Vera releases oxygen throughout the night and purifies the air of chemicals like benzene and formaldehyde. You can snap some off next time you’re sunburnt, too.

Jasmine Easy to keep, Jasmine lives well in pots and will look good on your windowsill with regular watering. Its lovely fragrance will not only neutralise bad smells, but a good whiff of it transmits signals to your limbic system, the region of the brain that regulates emotions.

Peace Lily These girls have pretty leaves and will kindly reward you for your diligence with the occasional white flower. But better yet, Peace Lily absorbs mould spores through its leaves and down to the roots to use as food. You’ve got to love a good looker with an appetite.

For The Carnaby’s Black Cockatoos Have you ever noticed a flock of Carnaby’s Cockatoos in your area? You would know about it as they are a very vocal, gregarious bird and travel in groups that really let you know they are alive and well.

But ‘alive and well’, unfortunately, is not the case.

The species is under threat of extinction, with their population declining 50 per cent in the last 45 years. The last count from Geraldton to Esperance was just over 4000 birds. The loss of their habitat and food source is the main reason for the demise of this amazing bird.

What can we you to help save this endangered species? Creating a Carnaby Cafe in your garden would not only provide food for these birds but other hungry wildlife like bees, who could also pay a visit and dine in. Provide menu options such as Banksias, Hakeas, Grevilleas, Callistemons and Marri seeds. An added feature would be nesting hollows.

Some interesting facts about the Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo • Male Black Cockatoos feed the female at her nest during the incubation period and fly over 12km to ensure she gets the food she needs during nesting.

• The cockatoos rarely use the same hollow to nest in if the previous season’s breeding attempt was unsuccessful.

• The cockatoos can live for 50 years in the wild.

• The cockatoo is endemic to southern WA.

Over my many years, I’ve seen plenty of friendships and relationships spoiled by one thing: people’s tendency to take their unhappiness out on their loved ones. We know it’s not a nice thing to do, but we are all guilty of it sometimes.

Often it is the ones we love the most who we vent our frustrations to, and not in a kind or effective way.

Next time you’re in a pickle, remember to acknowledge your unhappiness and ask yourself why. Are you tired, stressed, angry? The first thing you can try to do, without bringing a single person into your mess, is try to solve the problem for yourself. Get yourself to bed early, eat a big, healthy meal, or perhaps go for a walk to cool off.

If the problem is a less easy fix, you need to consider who the real enemy is. Have you been underperforming or caving to bad habits? Are you the one to blame? Often it’s easier to point the finger than reflect on our own failure. If there is a person who really has done you wrong, make sure you

address them and them alone, and be sure to do so articulately. Yelling will just upset you both.

Of course, sometimes in life things are even more complicated and convoluted.

Conflicts can be deep rooted in history and betrayal can be multifaceted.

Align yourself with allies—bring in your family and friends to help you solve problems, to promote forgiveness and to grant you the wisdom to move on.

Your circle of advisors should never stop expanding.

Most of all, if you do blow up at someone you love, be sure to apologise.

Remember, love is not just a word—it is an action. Demonstrate it.

Oh, man. The weekends just keep getting more amazing. Long weekends see regulars leave town only for event numbers to be filled out by an amazing amount of travelling legends. Tourists, we salute you.

I am hazy after the weekend, really struggling to stay awake. I tried to cook sausages and destroyed them at the defrost stage in the microwave. Quite regularly when I’m struggling to write, I’ll dip into a back catalogue of the random opinion pieces I’ve written for the Tide, though at the moment even that seems a monumental task.

Esperance people continue to absolutely amaze me, rising to the challenge to make this place a cracking location to live. And what a beautiful publication Bronte Vincent and Jesse McCarthyPrice continue to deliver, what an absolutely beautiful way to support all that is good in Esperance. You guys do a killer job and I have to say, thank you so much for allowing me to be a small part of it and for your ongoing support of the local music scene.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

3 cinnamon sticks 3 whole cloves 2 star anise 1 brown onion (quartered) 6 slices of ginger 2 garlic cloves sliced 4 cups vegetable stock 4 cups water 4 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp rice wine vinegar 1 tbsp olive oil Salt & pepper Packet of rice noodles Shiitake mushroom, thinly sliced Firm tofu, cut into 1cm pieces Bean sprouts Fresh basil Fresh mint 4 spring onions, thinly sliced 4 lime wedges 2 chillies, thinly sliced Crushed peanuts

1. To make the broth, warm a medium sized pot on the stove.

Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise and toast until fragrant, stirring occasionally.

2. Add the onion, ginger, vegetable stock, water, soy sauce, vinegar and bring to boil. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer for 30-50 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, prepare the mushrooms and tofu by pan-frying each separately in olive oil. The tofu should be crispy and the mushroom should be tender (this isn’t Sunday breakfast).

4. Prepare your noodles according to the packet. I prefer the thicker kind.

5. Once the broth is finished cooking, strain out the solid ingredients with a kitchen sieve or a strainer. Season it with extra soy sauce and/or salt to your liking.

6. Divide the noodles across 4 bowls. Ladle the broth into each bowl, add the mushroom and tofu. Now the fun part - garnish with bean sprouts, basil, mint, spring peanuts, B o honions, emian h o m e & g ichili f t w and are a boutiq lime wedge. How do you maintain good mental health?

Every individual has their own way of dealing, their own routine.

Mental health is just as important as our physical health.

But before you can learn how to have good mental health, you need to know what good mental health is.

Mental health isn’t just illnesses like depression, it’s the overall health of your mind. Therefore, good mental health is having a balance of peace and challenges. It’s the ability to overcome challenges. It’s being a good student, it’s being an individual who gives their best to everything they do. It’s getting out of bed in the morning, ready to face the day, despite what may have happened the day before. Having good mental health is to just continue each day, facing all those challenges, from homework to relationships to deciding what to do with your life.

Look at the people around you, the people you hang out with. Turn to your friends and ask them how they are doing.

Because at the end of the day, your friends, your true friends, will be the people you laugh with and the people you cry with. The people who will stick by your side through thick and thin. And it’s those people, you might not even realise it, but they are the people who help you overcome the challenges faced day-today. They will motivate you and make mountains feel like molehills. So make friends, talk more, continue being you, and take care of your mental health!

Between a Wolf and a Dog by Georgia Blain This book’s spooky reputation precedes it. The narrative centres around a woman dying of brain cancer, but somewhere during the writing process the author herself was terminally diagnosed with the same illness, dying six months after it was published.

Told over the course of one wet, gloomy day in Sydney, the story itself is not about death so much as the complexity of family and relationships—from unspeakable betrayal to unspeakable love.

Best is the exploration of the relationship between sisters. The dying woman’s daughter, Ester, has not spoken to her sister or husband since their affair ended her marriage. The betrayal and loss of the sisterly relationship is far more heart-wrenching and nuanced than that of the divorce.

Also an interesting plot device is Ester’s daily dealings with her clients as their therapist, all of who are experiencing different phases and forms of middle-class anxiety and grief. There are plenty of talking points, making this book a good one for a book club.

Spend more time at the beach

Blain’s precise and melancholic prose is unbelievable poignant, there is no false sentiment, and it’s remarkable how much depth of character she develops in so few words. Life is short, as the author knew too well, and she wastes no time and holds back no punches in reminding the audience of that.

It should be more depressing but all in all, Between a Wolf and a Dog is an intricate testament to forgiveness and there is warmth in the candour and honesty, and the prevailing of familial love. It’s a great winter weekend read that will likely haunt you long after the last page.

by Karli F lorisson Sometimes small actions can have a big ripple effect throughout history. In 1824, an adventurous 14-year-old boy ran away from his family estate in Scotland. What does this have to do with the history of Esperance? Well, let me tell you!

Drawn to adventure, the young runaway became a sailor. He was a hard worker, and by the time he was 19 years old, James McLean Dempster had become the skipper of the Eagle, owned

by Captain Charles Pratt. James struck up a romance with the daughter of Captain Pratt, and in 1830, he migrated to the fledgling Swan River settlement with the Captain and his family. Even though her parents were against the relationship, he soon after married Anne Ellen Pratt.

James and his new wife settled on Rottnest Island, where they grew hay and bred horses. James also bought a schooner called Mary Ann, which he used for trading between Australia and Mauritius.

During this time, he and an Aboriginal crew used whaleboats to rescue the crew of a Mauritian boat called the Lancier, which was wrecked on Stragglers Reef, off the coast of Fremantle. The rescue was widely publicised at the time, and the Mauritian government rewarded James—even though in the rescue, a chest containing 5000 gold Sovereigns was somehow lost.

James tried his hand at a few different endeavours, such as pearling up near Broome. He eventually moved to Northam, where he managed his father-in-law’s estate, an 8000-acre farm called Buckland. Soon, James and the Captain had a falling out, and he left the estate, going back to trading with Mauritius. After a couple of unsuccessful ventures, James and his family went back to Rottnest Island, where he became the superintendent of the prison facilities there for three years. James and the Captain managed to bury the hatchet, and after his time on Rottnest, James went back to Northam to live and work on Buckland once again.

James and Anne had seven children, and of course, four of these children were the Dempster brothers, James, Andrew, Edward and William, the earliest settlers and pastoralists in Esperance.

They built Dempster Homestead, and many landmarks (and streets!) in town are named after them. James himself lived the rest of his life in Northam, dying at the ripe old age of eighty.
