Alba Triana Alba Triana’s artistic practice focuses on exploring the inherent intelligence of nature. Her artworks,—which include sound and light sculptures, vibrational objects, and resonating spaces—are hybrid and cross the boundaries of a diverse set of fields. Artburst Magazine describes her as a “sound sculptor explor[ing] the interface between natural science and music… she combines rigor and poetic finesse.” Triana received the Civitella Foundation Fellowship (Italy/ US), South Arts State Fellowship (U.S.), and was the winner of awards in Colombia, such as IDCT National Composition Contest, National Electroacoustic Music Contest, “Otto de Greiff” National Contest, and French Alliance Best Exhibition of the Year Award. She has obtained commissions, residences, and grants from Kronos Quartet, Pro Helvetia (Switzerland), American Composers Forum, Oolite Arts (U.S.), GMEB (France), and Ministry of Culture (Colombia). Her work has been featured internationally in Némo— Biennale des Arts Numériques de Paris (France), Sónar+D Festival, Universitat de Barcelona, CCCB—Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (Spain), ISEA— International Symposium of Electronic Arts (Colombia), CMMAS (Mexico). Triana has participated in festivals such as Futura, Synthèse (France), and Zilele Muzicii Noi (Moldova). Her work belongs to art collections in Europe, Latin America, and the U.S., including the Otazu Collection—2020 Arco Prize for Collecting—as well as the Banco de la República de Colombia. Statement My work emerges from a deep interest in how nature intrinsically operates. Universal laws of chance, natural behaviors and phenomena, and fundamental modes of operation frame my approach to art/music making. This is why I engage creative methods that are holistic, complex, and multidimensional. Thus, my oeuvre crosses the boundaries of a diverse set of fields. My artistic production is hybrid and takes a variety of forms, including interactive musical installations, resonating spaces, sound and light sculptures, and vibrational objects. These pieces, expressed in both space and time, are heard, walked through, and seen. Especially in the past 10 years, the fields of the sonic and the visual have become unified in my work. In that time, I have experimented with the properties and behaviors of different types of waves, and the resonance phenomena in acoustic spaces and physical bodies that emit sound and/or light. Most recently, I have explored electromagnetism as a means of observation of non-perceptible entities. As in the universe, my artworks tend to be self-generating and evolving. Statistics and probabilities are used to set the conditions that define the identity and functioning of different parameters in a work. This allows for an infinite amount of outcomes that can be determined and controlled. By promoting a meditative contemplation of nature at a micro, intangible level, my goal is to induce a state of awe, and a feeling of communion with an integrated wholeness that is active, interconnected, and unified, provoking a profound identification with the essential elements that animate and connect us.

Delirious Fields

An ensemble of suspended spheres dances in space. In their choreography, each sphere develops the notion of gesture: a set of displacements, speeds, and figures capable of transmitting an expressive content that demands from the spectator a disposition to feel and contemplate. Each sphere orbits around a coil, in an electromagnetic field that drives or repels it, like a floating choreography that shows the alterations of the field and reveals an intangible material with which the sphere dialogues. Delirious Fields is a contemplation of the relationship between perceptible and non-perceptible realities. Delirious Fields – Nonet

An ensemble of suspended spheres dances in space. In their choreography, each one develops the notion of gesture: a set of displacements capable of transmitting an expressive content that demands from the spectator a disposition to feel and contemplate. Each sphere orbits around a coil, in an electromagnetic field that drives or repels it, showing the alterations of the field and revealing the intangible material with which the sphere dialogues. Eventually, the spheres hit metal rods tuned to slightly different frequencies. This generates periodic alterations in the sonority. Delirious Fields is a contemplation of the relationship between perceptible and non-perceptible realities. The work examines the rules of chance and probabilities in nature. Entropic Ballet Delirious Fields series

This series of works explores the relationship between perceptible and non-perceptible systems in the natural world. Electromagnetic fields stimulate a tangible element —in this case, suspended needles— to make them display intricate gestures, comparable to choreography. The gestures are aleatoric. However, established conditions, like the distance between needles and coils and the strength of the fields, make them predictable in a general sense. Variable degrees of randomness and organization make the choreography remindful of natural systems, like flocks of birds or multitudes in the streets. The work examines how universal laws of chance determine the organization and interaction between tangible and intangible elements in the natural world. Orbits Delirious Fields series

Orbits (2021) is an installation of 10 pendulums suspended above magnetic films. Ten spheres follow different trajectories in space, activated by electromagnetic fields which influence the complexity of both their single movements, and among each other. Every pendulum develops a more or less articulated action according to its position within the whole installation. Music on a Bound String No. 1

Music on a Bound String is a series of works making reference to string musical instruments. The installation includes a sculpture composed of a string held between two points. A loudspeaker emits an audio signal—which is inaudible to the audience—that excites the string, causing it to display a sound wave that transforms constantly. Natural wave behaviors and properties are manipulated in a musically-conceived visual discourse that plays with notions of inaudibility and sonic visualization. Guided by her musical background, in the first work of the series Alba composes complex, abstract narratives that unfold over time. She manipulates the properties of a visible sound wave, to create a well-structured visual discourse, that develops musically-devised phrases and larger structures with a clear beginning and end. The piece is divided in three sections: the first one composed by four phrases that start with discernible wave forms, blurring as they transit to the following phrase. The second section is composed by shorter phrases, gradually accelerating as they lead to the third part, characterized by a complex sound wave that becomes denser and more active as it approaches the end of the piece. Even though the work is musicallyconceived, it manifests in the visual realm.

Luminous Phrase

Luminous Phrase explores the natural phrasing generated by the interactions between sound waves and light waves. This work parts from the observation the artist makes of nature at a fundamental level, which process gives as a result the manifestation of phenomena that can be extrapolated to any scale of existence. The relation generated between these two types of waves — which according to their proprieties enforce, quarrel, or cancel each other—, creates a pattern that repeats itself every certain amount of time. This piece is part of the series Music on a Bound String, which references a string musical instrument in which a discourse is presented, conceived in a musical manner, experimenting with the fact of not being audible and with the visualization of sound. Polyphotony

Polyphotony, though largely conceived as a musical piece, is not audible. Instead of using audible sound as the piece’s main material, it employs light to develop an abstract narrative that unfolds over time (1200 sec). The installation evokes a musical ensemble. It includes three sculptures, which perform the same light composition at different speeds—thus, synchronizing periodically, by groups or all together. Each sculpture is comprised of a string held between two points. A loudspeaker emits an audio signal that activates the string, causing it to display a sound-wave. This visiblesound on the string is used as a canvas on which light is reflected. The composition results from the interactions between the visible-sound and light waves whose properties are manipulated over time. Polyphotony aims to induce a state of contemplation, and a profound identification with the fundamental elements that animate and connect us. POLYPHOTONY | VIDEO 48

Microcosmos

Microcosmos is a vibrational sculpture where energy is used to explore a fundamental notion: all physical bodies are perpetually vibrating, even when they appear to be perfectly still. For the piece, a cymbal is stimulated to activate the natural and characteristic patterns in which it vibrates, which are known as intrinsic resonance modes. Using mechanical energy, the resonance modes of the cymbal are audibly and visually activated, revealing a hidden microcosm of vibration. This becomes the material of the composition. Like many of Triana’s artworks, Microcosmos explores a fundamental physical phenomenon through musical installation. Behind the sculpture, the shadow of the vibrating cymbal is seen on a luminous circle of projected light. This references two-dimensional art, like painting and photography, except it is animated by the cymbal’s vibration. This communicates the multidimensional nature of the piece: it is musical, sculptural, and exists on a flat plane. The work unfolds across the temporal, the visual, and the spatial realms. Harmonic Motion

Harmonic Motion is part of the series of works Resonant Bodies, which explores a fundamental notion: at a microscopic level, all physical bodies vibrate. An object, in this case, a cymbal, is stimulated with energy to activate its modes of vibration –the intrinsic patterns in which it naturally resonates, even when it appears to be perfectly still. When the cymbal is activated with energy, these natural vibrations are amplified to the point they become audible. Furthermore, employing a system that involves lasers, developed specifically for the artwork, these same vibrations become visible as reflections of the emitted waves floating around the space. The cymbal’s vibrations, that are heard and seen, are used as the main material in the composition. Throughout the piece, the cymbal and its surrounding space go through different levels of activation, in an abstract narrative that explores the variations of the sound spectrum and the visual complexity of the waveforms seen in the reflections. This visual and audible vibrating “material” evidences that at a microscale everything is irreducible and internally active. Thus, what is seen and what is heard are inseparable, and play equally important roles in a composition that unfolds in the space-time dimension, conceived to be heard, seen, and walked through. Harmonic Motion contemplates the vibrating essence of our natural world, and how it greatly determines who we are and what emerges from ourselves.
