WHY IT’S NOT A GOOD IDEA TO CREATE A WINE CELLAR IN A GARAGE
C
reating a wine cellar in a residential garage is not a good idea for several reasons, mainly related to environmental conditions that are not ideal for storing and preserving wine. Here are a few reasons why a residential garage may not be the best place to store and preserve wine: Reason 1 | Temperature fluctuations | Your garage may experience significant temperature fluctuations, especially if it is not heated or air-conditioned. Temperature fluctuations can adversely affect the quality of stored wine, accelerating its aging process.
Reason 2 | Exposure to light | Sunlight and light variations can alter the chemical composition of wine and affect its taste. A wine cellar should be a dark place. Reason 3 | Humidity | A wine cellar usually requires a stable level of humidity conducive to wine preservation. Your garage may be subject to variations in humidity, which over time can dry out the corks on your bottles and cause storage problems.
« IT IS GENERALLY PREFERABLE TO CHOOSE A SPACE INSIDE THE HOME THAT OFFERS BETTER ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL TO ENSURE OPTIMAL WINE PRESERVATION. » Reason 4 | Vibration and movement | Various activities in your garage, such as starting your car or using power tools, can cause vibrations that are not conducive to wine conservation, as they can certainly disrupt the wine's aging process. Reason 5 | Insufficient thermal insulation | Your garage may not be as well insulated as your home. Insuffi cient thermal insulation can lead to greater-than-desired temperature variations. Reason 6 | Presence of odors | Your garage may be producing odors from chemicals, gas cans or other materials you store, which can alter the taste of your wine. Reason 7 | Safety | A wine cellar is an important investment. Storing wine in a garage can increase the risk of theft or damage from unsuspected accidents such as water leaks or even fire.
Reason 8 | Limited space | In principle, a wine cellar benefits from precise temperature and humidity control. A residential garage does not necessarily offer adequate space for the addition and installation of an air-conditioning or humidity control system. Reason 9 | Municipal by-laws | Some municipalities have strict fire safety standards for wine cellars that may be diffi cult to meet in a residential garage. In conclusion, creating a wine cellar in a residential garage brings with it challenges related to environmental and safety conditions. If your interior space is limited, you should consider investing in a wine cellar specially designed for restricted spaces.
