2021-2022 ESN Annual Report of Giving

Page 1

A Letter from the Head of School

Dear Friends and Supporters of Episcopal School,

The 2021-22 year was a year of continued growth and impact for Nashville’s only Episcopal School. Now, midway through our seventh year, we gratefully serve 156 students from 25 zip codes across greater Nashville, with two thirds coming from East Nashville and half from 37206.

We have enrolled 55 new students this year and opened up a second section of PreKindergarten because of the demand for our program. We also added a new administrative position this year: PK-8 Principal. Dr. Deatrice Swett has hit the ground running and has already made a big and positive impact on our school community.

As we have grown, we have also increased our commitment to diversity and inclusion. Our racial diversity has increased from 16% in 2021-22 to 23% this year, with a third of our new students identifying as students of color. We are taking the next steps on the Assessment of Inclusivity and Multuralism (AIM) process with the National Association of Independent Schools and working together with faculty, staff, parents, and board members to implement our two year deployment plan around our three main goals. The goals are: Creating & Maintaining a Diverse Community; Understanding & Appreciating Student Learning Differences and Abilities; and Fostering an Inclusive Community for all Constituents.

On Friday, 10/21, we had our first chapel service in the newly renovated commons!. The centerpiece of the Build Our Nest capital campaign, and thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, we now have a space on campus to hold chapels, performances, meetings, and lunch! In fact, having explored several food service options going back to last spring, I am delighted to announce that we will hot lunches up and running by Thanksgiving.

Finally, as many schools around the country respond to the increasing concerns around safety, we have taken meaningful steps to enhance campus security, including a perimeter fence, screen, and key card access, so there is only one point of entry for visitors to campus during the school day. Additionally, the front desk is now staffed from 7:45 AM to 5:30 PM each day.

Despite the challenges, we have persevered and we have excelled because of tremendous support from parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends near and far. The Purple Martin Annual Fund is the backbone of that support. Your gifts sustain us; your gifts are central to our ability to live our mission of nurturing the joy of learning and the spirit of discovery in each of our students.

Understanding Episcopal School's finances is the first step to understanding its need for philanthropic support. The Purple Martin Annual Fund is the most critical source of immediately available and flexible funds. Gifts to the Purple Martin Annual Fund are crucial to the financial health of the School and go towards recruiting and retaining the best possible faculty and staff, and to providing need-based financial assistance to bright and talented students who might not otherwise get the opportunity to attend Episcopal School. Programs, curriculum, technology, and facilities will change over time, but mission-aligned people remain the greatest investment in our efforts to create a life-changing education.

In addition to the generous donors who have made the operation of Episcopal School possible, in January of 2020, we also launched our ambitious “Build Our Nest” capital campaign to raise $2 million towards school renovations, scholarships for need-based financial aid, and upgrades to classroom and schoolwide technology and programming. Both the capital campaign and annual giving are crucial to the success of Episcopal School.

Included within the pages of this report are the names of those dedicated servants of Episcopal School who supported the financial health of this school in a time when our community needed it most. We applaud and thank every donor who continues to make possible an Episcopal School in Nashville and with mind and spirit soaring, let’s keep movin’ on!

WITH GRATEFUL THANKS TO THOSE WHO SUPPORTED THE SCHOOL BETWEEN JULY 1, 2021 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2022

As long-time Nashville residents, it was important that we find a school that mirrored the vibrancy, the diversity, and the spirit of this beautiful city - ESN does just that. From our daughter’s very first day of kindergarten at ESN, we have witnessed a community grow that has brought together students and parents from all parts of this city. Learning happens in the classroom but also in the school’s music rooms and vegetable garden. Educational curiosity and emotional maturity are developed in an environment that is inclusive, compassionate, and determined to bring out the best in each student by meeting them where they are. Students are taught to strive for more - for themselves, for their classmates, and for their cityand they are provided the proper support and guidance needed to achieve those goals. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the ESN community and its students.

We have been proud parents of Purple Martin students since 2017, so we are thrilled to see the school move from a tiny seed to a sapling with roots that continue to grow deeper in our community. Whether your family has journeyed through the school’s recent growth or just became a Purple Martin, everyone shares the same goal: We want our children to be a part of an educational environment reflective of the future we want for them. While we know there is work to be done to fully realize the school’s founding mission, we do see our children thriving. They love to learn, to get curious about their world, and how they can contribute to it. We support Dr. Jordan, and the ESN faculty and staff, to continue leading us toward realizing our mission to be a diverse, urban independent school “nurturing the joy of learning and the spirit of discovery in each of its students.”
