SCHOLARSHIP CATEGORIES Alfrenia Younge-Hampton Scholarship Award
The Alfrenia Younge-Hampton Scholarship Award is awarded to a student in memory of Alfrenia Younge-Hampton who was a member and past president of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter. She was an educator and community leader throughout the State of Illinois. She was also known throughout the world as an outstanding citizen and one who encouraged and influenced the lives of many. She remained active until her death.
Bessie B. Garvin Scholarship Award
The Bessie B. Garvin Educational Scholarship was established in memory of Bessie B. Garvin who was one of the founders and the first president of the East St. Louis chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Wilberforce University and remained active her entire life. She was a veteran teacher, community activist, and an outstanding citizen who influenced the lives of many students, friends, and family members. She possessed an undying concern about many persons in this community and nationwide. Her teaching career began in East St. Louis, at the Garfield School on “The Hill”. She was later transferred to Dunbar Elementary School where the bulk of her career as a teacher was spent. These scholarships given in honor and memory of this outstanding educator will assist four young ladies who have achieved academic excellence and are enrolled in a college or university.
Ruby Allen-Ellis Memorial Scholarship
The Ruby Allen Ellis Economic Empowerment Scholarship was established by the East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and Delta Economic Development Corporation in memory of and partnership with the family of Ruby Allen-Ellis, who was a champion for education and economic development and a member of Delta Sigma Theta. Ruby Allen Ellis was a valiant community leader who made significant strides in the areas of coalition building among major organizations, government agencies and civic leaders, and enhanced project partnerships that included: Community Job Fairs, support to Habitat for Humanity, establishing the first "Youth Entrepreneur Workshops” that enriched the lives of the underserved and disenfranchised in our community. This Scholarship is awarded annually to graduating African-American female seniors in the East St. Louis Metro East community who will attend a 4-year college/university in the fall or immediately upon her graduation
Janet Green-Pegues Memorial Award
The Janet Green-Pegues Memorial Award is presented in memory of Janet Green-Pegues who was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter This award is given to the highest-ranking Delta GEM
Abbie Lou Martin Memorial Scholarship Abbie Lou Hampton Martin worked in School District 189 as a teacher. Abbie's teaching career blossomed; and she was promoted to the Physical Education Supervisor in Dist. 189. Throughout this time, Abbie was busy bonding with other Delta women in theEast St. Louis community. The Sorors decided to charter a chapter in the community. In 1942 these dynamic women formed the Gamma Eta Chapter that would later be re- named East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter. Abbie leaves to keep her light illuminated her Deltas around the world. This scholarship is given to a young woman who exemplifies Abbie’s spirit, tenacity, and determination.
Past Presidents’ Scholarship The Past President’s scholarship recognizes deserving young women who exemplify outstanding educational achievement, a commitment to intellectual development, and a desire to service mankind.
Wise Owl Monetary Award
The Wise Owl Monetary Award is awarded to a graduating senior who exemplifies the role of an achiever in the areas of academics, leadership skills, volunteerism, and community service. The name "Wise Owl" was given by Dr. Katie Harper Wright, who is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter.
