Our Founders’ dream for this School – the mission they very clearly spelled out – is very distinct. I believe our students, faculty and staff live this mission every day. We know there are countless schools that educate and send their graduates off to college but what makes Episcopal different are the values we teach so that our students – your children and grandchildren – learn to live lives of honesty, hard work, responsibility and service to others. 50 by Fifty Society

The 50 by Fifty Society was established in appreciation of supporters whose lifetime giving to Episcopal is or will be $50,000 or more by the School’s 50th Anniversary in 2016. Episcopal is grateful for the dedication of these members whose faithful commitment sustained the vision of the School’s Founders and continues to ensure its future.

Two generations of the Dickinson family are members of the 50 by Fifty Society of lifetime leadership donors. Max and Edna Dickinson are longtime Episcopal supporters who have made consecutive gifts to the School for each of the last 26 years. A former trustee, Max was named an Honorary Trustee in 2013 for his years of generosity to Episcopal. Max and Edna’s three children–Spencer ’80, Forrest ’78, and Wendy ’76—are all Episcopal graduates. Wendy Dickinson Laprade ’76 and her husband Marty are 50 by Fifty Society members whose sons Max ’04 and Charles ’07 are ESJ alumni. Wendy’s two terms of service on the Board of Trustees ended in May of this year.

1966 Society

Beth and Michael Kirwan ’81 have been giving to The Episcopal Fund for 29 years. After Michael’s graduation in 1981, he was a member of the Alumni Board from 1991-1994 and served as President in 1993-1994. Michael also served on the Board of Trustees from 1995-1999. He and Beth are the parents of two Episcopal alumni, Andrew ’10 and Stuart ’14. During their time as parents, Michael and Beth were Episcopal Fund Parent Representatives and Episcopal Fund Chairs.

Great Oak Society The son of one of Episcopal’s founders, Jack Schmidt is a member of the School’s first graduating class of 1970. Jack has served on the Alumni Board and is currently the Alumni Class Representative for his class. Mary Packer Cummings Society The Mary Packer Cummings Society honors individuals who have provided for the School through deferred gifts, such as bequests, life insurance, annuities and trust agreements. The society is named in honor of Mrs. Cummings, who left the property where Episcopal now stands to St. John’s Cathedral upon her death in 1912. These planned gifts may be directed by the donor to provide unrestricted income or to be used for designated purposes such as endowment, capital improvements or program areas.

Episcopal School of Jacksonville Foundation The Episcopal School of Jacksonville Foundation is the corporation which holds the School’s endowment. Managed by the School’s Foundation Board, the endowment’s principal is invested and its earnings provide financial aid, faculty development and program support. With assets of approximately $6 million, the earnings from the endowment, combined with other income to the School, enable Episcopal to provide financial aid to nearly thirty three percent of our students. Scholarship funds and special funds within the Foundation were established in the name of persons or organizations listed on the following pages.

Bank of America Scholarship Fund Established in 2001 by Bank of America, this scholarship fund is established to provide assistance to academically qualified minority students with financial need. As a founder in the Take Stock in Children program, Bank of America established this scholarship at Episcopal to assist Take Stock in Children participants whenever possible. Both Middle School and Upper School students are eligible.

Ashley Danielle Bateh Scholarship Fund This scholarship fund was established in memory of Episcopal alumna Ashley D. Bateh (’03) through gifts from many family members and friends. This scholarship makes it possible for others who demonstrate Ashley’s qualities of integrity, creativity, exuberance, and a genuine love of all humankind to attend the School. A scholarship is awarded from this fund to a deserving student in the Middle or Upper School.

Edith Huddleston Botts Scholarship Fund Established in 1978 through gifts from Guy W. Botts, who was a trustee of the School’s Foundation Board, and other friends and family, this fund awards a scholarship to a deserving student in Upper or Middle School.

James B. and Barbara Russell Bours Scholarship Fund Established through a bequest from the Bours’ estate upon Mrs. Bours’ death in 1996, this fund awards numerous scholarships to academically talented students with financial need. Mr. and Mrs. Bours were communicants of St. John’s Cathedral.

Miller Bower Scholarship Fund Established in 1996 through a gift from the Mary and Bruce Bower family, scholarships are awarded to students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds who could not otherwise attend Episcopal and who demonstrate the highest qualities of leadership, character, academic achievement and artistic or athletic ability.

Jacob F. Bryan III Scholarship Fund Established by the Independent Insurance Group in 1984 in memory of Jacob F. Bryan III, Board Chairman of Independent Insurance and a School founder. This scholarship is offered to students in grades 7 and 8.

Steven de Balmaseda Champion Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1986 through gifts made in memory of 1982 graduate Steven de Balmaseda Champion. In addition to this fund, which awards a scholarship to a deserving middle or upper school student, the “Giving Tree” at the front circle drive was given in Steve’s memory by family, friends and classmates.

James L. Coon Jr. Scholarship Fund Established in 1997 by the Episcopal Student Senate, this fund awards a scholarship in memory of James Coon, a 1993 graduate.The Senate has raised nearly $40,000 toward this fund and continues to work to fully endow the scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to an individual who requires financial assistance in order to attend Episcopal and who exhibits a love for God, family, and community. He or she is expected to maintain a 3.0 grade point average and to contribute to the life of Episcopal.

Cameron Murchison Corse Fund This fund was established in 1980 in memory of Cameron Murchison Corse, a member of the class of 1975, to award a scholarship to a deserving student who displays excellence in academics. In keeping with Cameron’s love of tennis, special consideration is given to students with tennis ability. The fund may also provide for maintenance of the tennis courts.

Neal G., Sr. and BJ Cury Scholarship Fund Established in 2001 through a gift from the estate of Neal G. Cury, Sr. and the memorial gifts of family and friends, awards from this fund are made to students who need financial assistance in order to attend Episcopal.

The EHS Scholars Fund Excellence • Honor • Service The Scholars Fund was established in December 2000 through a gift from A. Dano Davis and his sons, Ben ’92 and Jed ’96. This fund assists students with financial need who possess strong character and who display in their lives and work the traits of excellence, honor and service.

The Episcopal School of Jacksonville Alumni Association Scholarship Fund Established in 1967 soon after the school’s founding, this fund awards a scholarship to a deserving student in middle or upper school. Awards are made in honor of all of Episcopal’s graduates.

Monique M. Grand Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1989 by the Student Senate and the Senior Class in memory of their classmate, Monique “Mokie” Grand. Scholarships from the fund are given as “living” memorials. In this way, future students will have the opportunity to attend Episcopal and enjoy the benefits of a fine education in a loving, Christian atmosphere. A bench in the Senior Courtyard also honors the memory of Mokie and her classmate, Lauren Snyder.

The John Michael Kelly Scholarship Fund Established in 2010 through the estate of Mr. Kelly, this fund awards a scholarship to a deserving student in Middle or Upper School.

The Randall Lane Lastinger ’85 Scholarship Fund Established in 2000 through a gift from Delores and Allen Lastinger, this fund awards a scholarship to assist academically talented students with financial need who would otherwise be unable to attend Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Both Middle School and Upper School students are eligible.

Talona Mae & Fred William Melber Fund Mr. Melber established a scholarship fund, through the Community Foundation, to be awarded to students with financial and/or life-circumstance need, most particularly children who may be orphans, foster children or otherwise from families who do not have the economic means to enable them to attend Episcopal.

The Roberta Mercier Scholarship Fund This scholarship was established in 2000 by Lee Mercier in honor of his wife’s retirement from Episcopal School of Jacksonville after 27 years as a teacher of French and chair of the Foreign Language Department. The Fund is established to assist deserving students with financial need and to help increase the diversity of the student body. Both Middle School and Upper School students are eligible.

The Wellington “Cotton” Paul Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 2000 by Peggy and J.F. Bryan IV in honor of Peggy’s father, Wellington “Cotton” Paul, so that students with financial need may benefit from an Episcopal education in the same way as have Mr. Paul’s grandchildren, Jeff ’89, Cotton ’91 and Josh ’03.

Christina Patricia Powell Scholarship Fund This scholarship fund was established in 1990 by the Class of 1990 in memory of their classmate, Christina “Christi” Powell. A scholarship is awarded to enable a deserving student to enjoy the benefits of an Episcopal education.

The Lindsey Kathleen Lastinger Riggs ’90 Scholarship Fund Established in 2000 through a gift from Delores and Allen Lastinger, a scholarship is awarded to assist academically talented students with financial need who would otherwise be unable to attend Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Both Middle School and Upper School students are eligible.

Katherine & Franklin G. Russell Scholarship Fund Established in 2002 by Katherine Beard and Louise Hardwick, in memory of their parents, and by Franklin and Anne Beard, in memory of his grandparents, scholarships from this fund are awarded to academically deserving students who require financial assistance to attend Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

Lauren K. Snyder Scholarship Fund This fund was established in 1989 by the Student Senate and the Senior Class in memory of their classmate, Lauren Snyder.

Anne Elizabeth Suratt Scholarship Fund This fund awards a scholarship to a deserving student in memory of 1993 graduate Anne Suratt. Gifts from numerous family, friends, and classmates established this scholarship in 1997 to honor this remarkable young woman who added greatly to Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

The Amy Delores Lastinger ’91 Scholarship Fund Established in 2000 through a gift from Delores and Allen Lastinger, a scholarship is awarded to assist academically talented students with financial need who would otherwise be unable to attend Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Both Middle School and Upper School students are eligible.

Shirley Cox Webb Scholarship Fund Established in 1979 by Dr. H. Warner Webb, this fund provides a scholarship for a deserving Middle or Upper School student in memory of Shirley Cox Webb, mother of Dan Webb ’77, Patrick Webb ’79, and Julia Webb Torak ’85.

Bond Science Endowment Fund Established in 2000 by Sandy and Bill Bond and their family, this fund supplements the annual department operating budget, providing extra funds for research projects, special programs and resources to enhance the science curriculum.

The Lucius A. Buck Endowment Fund Established in 1993 in memory of School founder Lucius A. Buck by friends of Mr. Buck and the Episcopal School of Jacksonville Board of Trustees, the objective of this fund is the preservation of papers; books and memorabilia given to the school by Mr. Buck, preservation and maintenance of the Margaret Winters Buck Chapel; preservation of the Lucius A. Buck Student Center; preservation and expansion of the Southern Collection of the Jacob F. Bryan III Library; and preservation, enlargement and beautification of the Episcopal School of Jacksonville grounds.

The Mary Lou and Dan Davis Awards for Excellence in Teaching Established in 1992, the Davis Awards for Excellence in Teaching are presented each year to selected Episcopal School of Jacksonville teachers who personify quality in their teaching and in their influence on student learning; who consistently and unselfishly go above and beyond normal expectation of time, energy and devotion in working with students; who demonstrate the rare ability to motivate students to higher and higher levels of achievement; and who have consistently made use of opportunities for continuing education to improve themselves professionally. The award is intended to inspire all Episcopal teachers to pursue uncompromising excellence and caring in the classroom.

The Delores & Allen Lastinger Summer Scholars Fund Established in 2000 through a gift from Delores and Allen Lastinger, the Lastinger Summer Scholars Fund will provide for professional development opportunities over and above those required, and will benefit not only the faculty members’ educational needs but also the expanded community of Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Some of the most rewarding professional development programs are those extended summer programs offered by numerous universities, agencies and foundations.

The Magevney Family Technology Endowment Fund Established in 2000 by Meta and Hugh Magevney and their sons, Michael ’87, John ’89 and William ’00, this fund provides in perpetuity for enhancement and expansion of the technology program at Episcopal. In this ever-changing arena, this fund will aid the School in staying at the forefront of educational technology.

Charles E. Merrill Fund Established in 1970, this fund awards grants to Episcopal faculty members to pursue continuing education through summer studies, workshops and other special educational programs.

Sarah Elizabeth de Lannoy Morley Towers & Dr. Robert Baldwin Van Cleve Scholarship This scholarship was established in 1988 by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Baldwin Van Cleve in memory of a devout admirer of Episcopal, Sarah Elizabeth de Lannoy Morley Towers. In 2005 Dr. Van Cleve’s family made additional contributions and included his name on this fund. Each year a portion of the interest is used to assist scholarship students with various additional educational expenses that arise.

The Guardian Gift Fund Established in 1999, The Guardian Gift was created by Bill and Theresa Dahl to honor an Episcopal teacher or staff member whose mentoring and positive influence has made a lasting impact on a student. Graduating seniors are invited to write an essay about their “Guardian” teacher and why he or she deserves to be honored. The recipients are not announced until the Senior Honors Convocation, when the student is invited to read the winning essay which reveals who that student’s Guardian is. The winning student and the teacher he or she has nominated split a cash award.

The presentation of The Guardian Gift is a highlight of the awards ceremony. The Dahls endowed a fund for The Guardian Gift in 2003.

The Royal Family Endowed Fund Tom Royal ’78 was a scholar athlete who attended Episcopal with the help of financial aid. A member of the swim team, Tom eventually graduated from Harvard University. Tom was an only child who predeceased his parents, and upon their death, the School was notified that it was one of their estate’s beneficiaries. This fund will support financial aid.

Parent Organizations Parent Organizations Enhance the Episcopal Experience

Parents’ Association President, Robin Virtue The Parents’ Association contributed to many areas of campus life this year for students, faculty and parents.

This year’s uniform recycling program returned labeled uniforms, books and backpacks to their rightful owners as well as providing gently worn uniforms for all.

Parents also benefited from the PA’s collaboration with College Counseling including three information sessions on Finances for College, Athletic Recruitment and making a successful college visit. New parents were welcomed by the PA with Ice Cream Sundae on Sunday as well as parent-led tours. All parents benefited from the new Parent-Student Directories.

The PA supported students by offering Vision Screening, and also Student Government events, including Homecoming, Winter Formal, Prom and Springfest.

Community Service Scholarships of $500 each were given to two graduating seniors by the Parents’ Association as well. The awardees this year were seniors Rachel Kincart and Catherine Yip. In addition, the PA added three more tables and umbrellas at Buck Student Center for The Eagle Café. Students enjoyed Christmas at Episcopal, which featured the PA’s version of the New York City Rockefeller Christmas tree on the Flag Plaza, a decorated campus and donuts and hot chocolate. The PA also funded a portable speaker system with WiFi capabilities, a portion of Great Gatsby Day and Senior Wills.

Faculty appreciated lunches hosted for them by the PA. The PA also provided Angel Awards given to faculty or staff who request funding for a specific project not previously budgeted. Awards this year included materials to create crosses for 80 classrooms, table linens and supplies to stock a maker space in the library.

Parent Organizations Athletic Boosters President, Maureen Diederich Episcopal’s athletic teams, students and coaches benefited in many ways from Boosters’ support this year. Coaches greatly appreciated the annual Coaches’ Luncheon. Boosters also helped with the Eagle 5K in January, a fundraiser for the School. Boosters also put on the annual Senior Athletic Awards Banquet to honor senior athletes in the Spring. In addition Boosters supported Senior Night for each team, which honors seniors during a particular sports’ season, and provided senior banners for display. Boosters this year assisted with the School’s pep rallies in addition to National Signing Day in February, a school-wide event where seniors commit to play at the collegiate level. Students enjoyed tailgating opportunities during football and baseball seasons, and Middle Schoolers enjoyed treats such as snowcones courtesy of the Boosters. Boosters worked collaboratively with Student Government this year to provide what students requested for tailgates, including t-shirts and banners, and worked with the Athletic Office to provide fan buses to important away games so Episcopal students could cheer on the Eagles at other schools around Jacksonville!

Fine Arts Nurturing Students (FANS)

Fine Arts Nurturing Students enhances the fine arts experience for every Episcopal student by providing opportunities to expand their knowledge and build on their talents, while also supporting actual performances behind the scenes. This year FANS sponsored guest musicians and choreographers for students, who benefitted from the additional, professional instruction and perspectives.

For example, Clement Mensah taught dance students in addition to creating choreography

for the Spring Dance Concert. Broadway actor Kevin Covert worked with students for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, drawing on his current Broadway experience in the same musical. FANS also provided support during Fine Arts Week. Behind the scenes FANS provided snacks and meals, as well as receptions, for performances, including the first Tea & Symphony.
