Boldly ESJ Campaign Report

Page 1

The Mission of Episcopal School of Jacksonville is to provide a superior college-preparatory education in an environment marked by high expectation, Christian nurture, and social diversity. Through a balanced program of academics, arts, and athletics, Episcopal’s faculty seeks to instill in each student intellectual growth, character development, responsible leadership and a commitment to community service.

A LETTER FROM THE BOLDLY ESJ CO-CHAIRS:

Thank you, Episcopal community! Because of you, Episcopal has completed the largest capital campaign in the school’s history, and has new facilities, endowments, and renovations that help us fulfill our mission and ensure we can continue to offer the best education in Northeast Florida. No matter the size of your gift, you demonstrated your love for our school and our students and that’s what counts the most.

When The Rev. Adam Greene, Head of School, asked us to lead this project, we eagerly agreed, as we knew that we could count on the generosity of so many current and former families. Yes, we had an ambitious goal, but we knew that by working together we could achieve it. As you will see in this report, this campaign has set the foundation for the next 60 years of Episcopal education.

Our recent capital campaigns have provided our students and faculty with the resources they need to succeed in an ever-changing world of college preparatory education. Your contribution to Boldly ESJ has allowed our school to build new STEM labs, liberal arts and science classrooms, a new riverfront dining hall, an expanded campus store, and more, helping our students to thrive and grow across the Four Pillars.

Thank you again for your participation in this important milestone campaign for Episcopal. We could not have done this without you!

Sincerely,

Amy Harris Wacaster ‘94

BOLDLY ESJ CAPITAL CAMPAIGN OBJECTIVES:

1. A new building with a commercial kitchen and dining hall on the first floor, science and technology classrooms on the second floor, and a large boardroom and event space on the third floor.

2. The alteration, renovation, and repair of the Buck Student Center into a true student commons area, welcome center, and an updated and expanded campus store.

3. The conversion of six original science classrooms in the Foerster Building into 12 new liberal arts classrooms, allowing each faculty member to have his or her own space.

4. Contributions to Episcopal’s endowment fund to support science education and maintenance for the upgraded facilities.

We are pleased to report that the campaign successfully achieved all four objectives and raised more than $20,000,000. This was the largest capital campaign in ESJ’s 60-year history.

HONORING THE HASKELL FAMILY

The newest facility addition to the Munnerlyn Campus, the Haskell Center for Science and Student Life, is named for longtime Episcopal supporters Joan and Preston Haskell. A generous gift to the school from Joan and Preston and their daughters Rushton Haskell Callaghan ‘82 and Sally Haskell Singletary ‘86, for the Boldly ESJ campaign is the Haskell family’s most recent show of support for Episcopal. The family has been instrumental in supporting every capital campaign at the school since 1978.

As longtime and vital supporters of the school, the Haskell family

has earned a place of honor on the Episcopal campus. Rushton and Sally are Episcopal alumnae and their brother Preston attended as a member of the Class of 1984. Sally served on the Board of Trustees from 2014-2020, and Rushton served on the Alumni Board for 10 years and was named Alumna of the Year in 2017. Additionally, several of Joan and Preston’s grandchildren either attended or graduated from Episcopal.

Preston served on the Board of Trustees from 2011-2014, and Joan served as a Trustee from 1980-1984. Both were named Trustees Emeriti in 2015. They are members of The

50 by Fifty Society of Episcopal lifetime leadership donors and served as Honorary Chairs of Lead the Way, the school’s 50th anniversary capital campaign. The Haskells have deep roots in the Jacksonville community and have held leadership roles in nearly every aspect of civic life.

“Supporting Episcopal remains wonderful to us, as the school has no financial worries currently, and facility upgrades are the most important need. You have a smart student body and dedicated faculty that deserves nice, new facilities,” said Preston Haskell.

HONORING CEREE HARDEN AND THE HARDEN FAMILY LEGACY

For over 25 years, the Harden family has played a vital role in the Episcopal community. Their involvement began with Ceree Harden in 1998 and has grown through generations, touching every part of school

life—from academics and athletics to the arts and spiritual life. The family supported key initiatives, capital campaigns, and scholarship funding, and inspired others to do the same.

Their legacy now lives on in Harden Hall, Episcopal’s new dining facility. More than a gathering space, it represents community, connection, and the values the Hardens have long embodied.

Sadly, Ceree passed away just as construction began, but his vision shaped every step. A respected business leader and civic servant, he led his family’s insurance firm from age 26 and served on the boards of Baptist Medical Center, the Jacksonville Port Authority, and Episcopal. His community impact was recognized with his induction into the First Coast Business Hall of Fame.

HONORING IRENE AND DAVID NUNES

Boldly ESJ donors Irene and David Nunes moved to Jacksonville from the Pacific Northwest and never looked back. “We heard about the strong reputation of Episcopal from a number of people when we moved here. That word-of-mouth information from families who had children attending was very important for us as we were deciding on a school for our son. We heard about the passion of the classroom teachers, and that has to come first. We also appreciated how Episcopal supports a balance of interests, be it academics, sports, or the arts. That, coupled with the culture, make the school a pretty special place,” said Irene and David.

The Nunes family supported the Boldly ESJ campaign because they were impressed by the quality of the education their son was receiving. They believe in the value of education as the primary building block for all children and particularly the strength of a strong STEM foundation. David said, “We saw our support of the Boldly ESJ campaign as a way to give back to the community in addition to supporting the mission of the school.”

Irene and David remain excited and confident about the future of Episcopal. They said, “In addition to all the campus improvements from the Boldly ESJ campaign, the incorporation of the Beaches and St. Mark’s Campuses in concert with the expansion of the sixth grade classrooms at the Munnerlyn Campus provide ESJ with a very attractive age 1 to grade 12 offering. ESJ’s proximity to downtown as well as the visibility and attractiveness of the Haskell Center should help to both draw new families into the ESJ community and serve as a reminder of the accessibility of quality education in Jacksonville.”

THANK YOU

Thank you for your support of our school during the construction of this new building. My new classroom is fantastic! We have a running list of the dolphins, eagles, ospreys, and more that we have seen out of the windows, and that is perfect for a Marine Biology class. Being physically closer to the water has encouraged both my students and me to become better stewards of our environment. In my more than 40 years of teaching at Episcopal, this is by far the best thing that has happened for me.

Thank you for the new chemistry classrooms! This space for teaching and learning is fantastic. All of the equipment has been updated, and I can teach deeper and more meaningful chemistry experiments with my students. They have a greater ability to learn on their own, as well, with the additional lab space and equipment. Thanks again!
