During the 2016-2017 school year Episcopal was able to make remarkable improvements in the programming we are able to offer, the professional development, equipment and spaces available for our outstanding faculty to focus on learner-centered teaching, and the facilities in which our students are able to gain essential 21st century skills as they prepare to succeed at our country’s top colleges and universities.

Our life-long community is most certainly Episcopal’s biggest strength. The 1966 Society recognizes the most loyal supporters of The Episcopal Fund, the school’s annual campaign for unrestricted support. Named for the year Episcopal was founded, this giving society recognizes donors who have given to The Episcopal Fund for five or more consecutive years. Faithful support of The Episcopal Fund is a hallmark of the strength of our community.

Sunny Turner Hartigan ’88 and Joseph Hartigan have been members of The 1966 Society for 15 years. Sunny served on the Alumni Board from 2008-2010 serving on the Admissions, Career Day and Homecoming committees. While attending Episcopal, she enjoyed cheerleading and was the Class of 1988 Homecoming Queen. Sunny and Joseph have three sons: Patrick ’23 joined Episcopal this year, Wyatt attends Beaches Episcopal School and Drew attends Jacksonville Beach Elementary. Sunny works in healthcare marketing and is a pet adoption advocate. Joe is a General Surgeon at St. Vincent’s Southside.

Anne and Franklin Beard Sr. ’70 are Episcopal Fund leadership donors, members of The 1966 Society and The Great Oak Society. Franklin was a member of our Board of Trustees in 1984 serving on the Finance, Advancement, Public Relations and Finance committees and was Alumni Board President in 1980. Anne and Franklin were Episcopal Fund Parent of Alumni Chairs in 1996. The couple also established the Katherine & Franklin G. Russell Scholarship Fund in memory of Franklin’s grandparents which offers financial aid to academically deserving students. While at Episcopal, Franklin participated in soccer, track and tennis. Anne and Franklin are parents to Russell ’96 and Cameron ’00. Franklin is a senior vice president at UBS Financial Services, Inc., the firm which manages the assets of the Episcopal School of Jacksonville Foundation.

Holland and Charles Gibbs ’87 are Episcopal Fund leadership donors, members of The Great Oak Society, and The 1966 Society. They have been faithful supporters of Episcopal for the past 26 years. Charles served on the Alumni Board from 2005-2007 and then again as president from 2009-2011. In the fall of 2014, Charles cochaired Episcopal’s annual Golf & Tennis Tournament with fellow alums Michael Magevney ’87 and John Magevney ’89.

Charles is a partner at Driver, McAfee, Peek & Hawthorne.

While an Epsicopal student, Charles participated in cross country, wrestling, and crew and was a member of the Cum Laude Society and Student Government.

Holland and Charles have served as Episcopal Fund parent representatives and are involved in the New Parent Ambassador program. Holland served as a committee chair for Celebration in 2014-2015.

MARY PACKER CUMMINGS SOCIETY

The Mary Packer Cummings Society honors individuals who have provided for the school through deferred gifts such as bequests, life insurance, annuities and trust agreements. The society is named in honor of Mrs. Cummings, who left the property where Episcopal now stands to St. John’s Cathedral upon her death in 1912. These planned gifts may be directed by the donor to provide unrestricted income or to be used for designated purposes such as endowment, capital improvements or program areas.

The Episcopal School of Jacksonville Foundation is the corporation which holds the school’s Endowment. Managed by the school’s Foundation Board, the Endowment’s principal is invested and its earnings provide financial aid, faculty development and program support. With assets of approximately $8 million, the earnings from the Endowment, combined with other income to the school, enable Episcopal to provide financial aid to nearly thirty-three percent of our students.

Established in 1996 through a gift from the Mary and Bruce Bower family, scholarships are awarded to students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds who could not otherwise attend Episcopal and who demonstrate the highest qualities of leadership, character, academic achievement and artistic or athletic ability.

JACOB F. BRYAN III SCHOLARSHIP FUND

BANK OF AMERICA SCHOLARSHIP FUND

EDITH HUDDLESTON BOTTS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 2001 by Bank of America, this scholarship fund is established to provide assistance to academically qualified minority students with financial need. As a founder in the Take Stock in Children program, Bank of America established this scholarship at Episcopal to assist Take Stock in Children participants whenever possible. Both Middle School and Upper School students are eligible.

Established in 1978 through gifts from Guy W. Botts, who was a Trustee of the school’s Foundation Board, and other friends and family, this fund awards a scholarship to a deserving student in Middle or Upper School.

This fund was established by the Independent Insurance Group in 1984 in memory of Jacob F. Bryan III, a Board Chairman of Independent Life Insurance and a school Founder.

This scholarship is offered to students in grades 7 and 8.

This scholarship fund was established in memory of Episcopal alumna Ashley D. Bateh ’03 through gifts from many family members and friends.

This scholarship makes it possible for others who demonstrate Ashley’s qualities of integrity, creativity, exuberance, and a genuine love of all humankind, to attend the school. A scholarship is awarded from this fund to a deserving student in Middle or Upper School.

BOND SCIENCE ENDOWMENT FUND

Established in 2000 by Sandy and Bill Bond and their family, this fund supplements the annual department operating budget, providing extra funds for research projects, special programs, and resources to enhance the science curriculum.

Established through a bequest from the Bours’ estate upon Mrs. Bours’ death in 1996, this fund awards numerous scholarships to academically talented students with financial need.

Mr. and Mrs. Bours were communicant of St. John’s Cathedral.

BOWEN SCHOLARS FUND

Established by a generous planned gift from Buford L. Bowen, a lifelong Episcopalian who loved young people, The Bowen Scholars Fund provides financial aid to deserving students. Students who are selected as Bowen Scholars will continue to receive the scholarship throughout their Episcopal career, provided that the student maintains certain academic standards.

Established in 1993 in memory of school Founder Lucius A. Buck by friends of Mr. Buck and the Episcopal School of Jacksonville Board of Trustees, the objective of this fund is the preservation of papers; books and memorabilia given to the school

by Mr. Buck, preservation and maintenance of the Margaret Winters Buck Chapel; preservation of the Lucius A. Buck Student Center; preservation and expansion of the Southern Collection of the Jacob F. Bryan III Library; and preservation, enlargement and beautification of the Episcopal School of Jacksonville grounds.

LEO C. BURGMAN CHAIR OF ENGLISH

Established in 1997 through a gift from Jim Winston, his late wife Mary, and their daughter McKimmon “Kimmie” Winston Mason, Class of 1975, this chair honors the memory of Kimmie’s grandfather, Leo C. Burgman. As an academic chair, income from this fund will help attract and retain high-quality faculty in the department

of English. Jim Winston has served the school as a member of the Board of Trustees and the Foundation Board, and is a Trustee Emeritus.

STEVEN DE BALMASEDA CHAMPION SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established in 1986 through gifts made in memory of 1982 graduate Steven de Balmaseda Champion. In addition to this fund, which awards a scholarship to a deserving Middle or Upper School student, the “Giving Tree” at the front circle drive was given in Steve’s memory by family, friends, and classmates.

JAMES L. COON JR. SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 1997 by the Episcopal Student Senate, this fund awards a scholarship in memory of James Coon, a 1993 graduate.The Senate has raised nearly $40,000 toward this fund and continues to work to fully endow the scholarship.

This scholarship is awarded to an individual who requires financial assistance in order to attend Episcopal and who exhibits a love for God, family, and community. He or she is expected to maintain a 3.0-grade point average and to contribute to the life of Episcopal.

CAMERON MURCHISON CORSE FUND

This fund was established in 1980 in memory of Cameron Murchison Corse, a member of the Class of 1975, to award a scholarship to a deserving student who displays excellence in academics. In keeping with Cameron’s love of tennis, special consideration is given to students with tennis ability. The fund may also provide for maintenance of the tennis courts.

NEAL G., SR. AND BJ CURY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 2001 through a gift from the estate of Neal G. Cury, Sr. and the memorial gifts of family and friends, awards from this fund are made to students who need financial assistance in order to attend Episcopal.

THE BOBBY DALE ENDOWMENT FOR STUDENT SERVICES

Established in 2015 by Robert Dale, this fund provides additional support over and above the school’s budget for Student Services, a department staffed with professionals dedicated to help students with learning differences and challenges they face in other areas of their lives.

This invaluable support can be the catalyst for a student’s success at Episcopal and beyond.

THE MARY LOU AND DAN DAVIS AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING

Established in 1992, the Davis Awards for Excellence in Teaching are presented each year to selected Episcopal School of Jacksonville teachers who personify quality in their teaching and in their influence on student learning; who consistently and unselfishly go above and beyond normal expectation of time, energy and devotion in working with students; who demonstrate the rare ability to motivate students to higher and higher levels of achievement; and who have consistently made use of opportunities for continuing education to improve themselves professionally.

This award is intended to inspire all Episcopal teachers to pursue uncompromising excellence and caring in the classroom.

EPISCOPAL SCHOOL OF JACKSONVILLE FOUNDATION LINDA AND RIP DUPONT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Longtime Episcopal supporters Linda and Rip duPont are the parents of two Episcopal graduates, Stacy ’88 and Tim ’91. Linda and Rip duPont created a scholarship for students with financial need, with preference given to a student or students coming to Episcopal from Beaches Episcopal School.

ENDOWED FUND FOR HARKNESS TEACHING

Created in 2014 by donors who funded Episcopal’s initial pilot program in the Harkness method, the Endowed Fund for Harkness Teaching provides ongoing funds to ensure the effective integration of the Harkness method in Episcopal’s curriculum.

This fund will provide training, evaluation, and support for teachers using the Harkness method and will spread and maintain the culture of Harkness teaching. This collaborative learning style has invigorated Episcopal’s faculty and this fund will ensure the sustainability of this program at Episcopal.

ENDOWMENT FOR SUPPORT OF ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS

This endowment seeks to ensure the success of economically disadvantaged students who receive substantial financial aid by offering them support services and resources which will increase their opportunity to thrive at Episcopal, in college, and in life. Financial aid pays for tuition, but it does not address the additional expenses which are vital to the complete student experience. The school’s financial aid budget cannot cover these additional expenses, nor are most economically disadvantaged families able to absorb these costs. These expenses include tutoring, counseling services, books, uniforms, technology, among others.

THE EHS SCHOLARS FUND

The Scholars Fund was established in December 2000 through a gift from A. Dano Davis and his sons, Ben ’92 and Jed ’96. This fund assists students with financial need who possess strong character and who display in their lives and work the traits of excellence, honor and service.

THE ESJ ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 1967 soon after the school’s founding, this fund awards a scholarship to a deserving student in middle or Upper School.

Awards are made in honor of all of Episcopal’s graduates.

FORBES SCHOLARS FUND

Created by Marie and John Forbes, the Forbes Scholars Fund will award a scholarship to a student for his or her entire Episcopal career.

Students with financial need will be eligible for the scholarship and will maintain their status as a Forbes Scholar as long as they meet the academic requirements to remain at Episcopal.

MONIQUE M. GRAND SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established in 1989 by the Student Senate and the Senior Class in memory of their classmate, Monique “Mokie” Grand.

Scholarships from the fund are given as “living” memorials. A bench in the Senior Courtyard also honors the memory of Mokie and her classmate, Lauren Snyder.

THE GUARDIAN GIFT FUND

Established in 1999, The Guardian Gift was created by Bill and Theresa Dahl to honor an Episcopal teacher or staff member whose mentoring and positive influence has made a

lasting impact on a student. Graduating seniors are invited to write an essay about their “Guardian” teacher and why he or she deserves to be honored.

The recipients are not announced until the Senior Honors Convocation when the student is invited to read the winning essay which reveals who that student’s Guardian is. The winning student and the teacher he or she has nominated split a cash award. The presentation of The Guardian Gift is a highlight of the awards ceremony. The Dahls endowed a fund for The Guardian Gift in 2003.

THE JOHN MICHAEL KELLY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established in 2010 through the estate of Mr. Kelly. It provides a scholarship to a deserving student in Middle or Upper School.

THE AMY DELORES LASTINGER ’91 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 2000 through a gift from Delores and Allen Lastinger, a scholarship is awarded to assist academically talented students with financial need who would otherwise be unable to attend Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

Both Middle and Upper School students are eligible.

THE RANDALL LANE LASTINGER ’85 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 2000 through a gift from Delores and Allen Lastinger, this fund awards a scholarship to assist academically talented students with financial need who would otherwise be unable to attend Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

Both Middle and Upper School students are eligible.

THE DELORES & ALLEN LASTINGER SUMMER SCHOLARS FUND

Established in 2000 through a gift from Delores and Allen Lastinger, the Lastinger Summer Scholars Fund will provide for professional development opportunities over and above those required, and will benefit not only the faculty members’ educational needs but also the expanded community of Episcopal School of Jacksonville. Some of the most rewarding professional development programs are those extended summer programs offered by numerous universities, agencies, and foundations.

TALONA MAE & FRED WILLIAM MELBER FUND

Mr. Melber established a scholarship fund, through the Community Foundation, to be awarded to students with financial and/or lifecircumstance need, most particularly children who may be orphans, foster children or otherwise from families who do not have the economic means to enable them to attend Episcopal. Mr. Melber was an orphan who grew up on Episcopal’s property when it was a Boys’ Home operated by St. John’s Cathedral. Mr. Melber created the fund to honor the generosity of the church that had raised him.

The orphanage closed in 1953, making way for St. John’s Cathedral to envision a high school on its land. Each year, a deserving student who would not otherwise be able to attend Episcopal receives a generous scholarship provided by Fred Melber’s Fund.

ROBERTA MERCIER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This scholarship was established in 2000 by Lee Mercier in honor of his wife’s retirement from Episcopal School of Jacksonville after 27 years as a teacher of French and chair of the Foreign Language Department. The Fund is established to assist deserving students with financial need and

to help increase the diversity of the student body.

Both Middle and Upper School students are eligible.

THE WELLINGTON “COTTON” PAUL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established in 2000 by Peggy and J.F. Bryan IV in honor of Peggy’s father, Wellington “Cotton” Paul, so that students with financial need may benefit from an Episcopal education in the same way as have Mr. Paul’s grandchildren, Jeff ’89, Cotton ’91 and Josh ’03.

CHRISTINA PATRICIA POWELL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

LAUREN K. SNYDER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

This fund was established in 1989 by the Student Senate and the Senior Class in memory of their classmate, Lauren Snyder.

THE MAGEVNEY FAMILY TECHNOLOGY ENDOWMENT FUND

Established in 2000 by Meta and Hugh Magevney and their sons, Michael ’87, John ’89 and William ’00, this fund provides in perpetuity for enhancement and expansion of the technology program at Episcopal. In this ever-changing arena, this fund will aid the school in staying at the forefront of educational technology.

This scholarship fund was established in 1990 by the Class of 1990 in memory of their classmate, Christina “Christi” Powell. A scholarship is awarded to enable a deserving student to enjoy the benefits of an Episcopal education.

CHARLES E. MERRILL FUND

THE LINDSEY KATHLEEN LASTINGER RIGGS ’90 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

DALE D. REGAN PLAZA REPLACEMENT ENDOWMENT

Established in 2000 through a gift from Delores and Allen Lastinger, a scholarship is awarded to assist academically talented students with financial need who would otherwise be unable to attend Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

Both Middle and Upper School students are eligible.

This special fund was created by Denise Hunt, sister of Dale Regan, to fund the eventual replacement of the beautiful Dale D. Regan Plaza.

The Regan Plaza surrounded the iconic Great Oak tree which stood on Episcopal’s grounds for hundreds of years and was former teacher and Head of School Dale Regan’s favorite place on the campus. After her death in 2012, the community created the Dale D. Regan Plaza to honor her memory of service to the school. To ensure that the Regan Plaza can be replaced without cost to the school, Denise Hunt established this term endowment to honor her sister.

KATHERINE & FRANKLIN G. RUSSELL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 2002 by Katherine Beard and Louise Hardwick, in memory of their parents, and by Franklin and Anne Beard, in memory of his grandparents, scholarships from this fund are awarded to academically deserving students who require financial assistance to attend Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

Established in 1970, this fund awards grants to Episcopal faculty members to pursue continuing education through summer studies, workshops and other special educational programs.

This fund awards a scholarship to a deserving student in memory of 1993 graduate Anne Suratt. Gifts from numerous family, friends, and classmates established this scholarship in 1997 to honor this remarkable young woman who added greatly to Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

THE JACK TARVER ENDOWED FUND FOR COMMUNICATIONS

This fund supports the school’s Department of Communications, which includes journalism, media production, public speaking, yearbook, and psychology. This fund was established by Katie Jason Oldoerp ’96 in memory of her grandfather, the late Jack Tarver, former publisher of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and chair of the Associated Press.

WILLIAM N. VALENTINE SCHOLARSHIP

Former teacher William N. “Bill” Valentine taught English, history, Russian, and Latin in his 43 year career at Episcopal. He received the Davis Award for Excellence in Teaching and was also named the Leo C. Burgman Chair in English before his retirement. He created a scholarship fund which is awarded to students with financial need so that they can benefit from the school he loved and served.

THE EPISCOPAL PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION

This scholarship was established in 1988 by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Baldwin Van Cleve in memory of a devout admirer of Episcopal, Sarah Elizabeth de Lannoy Morley Towers. In 2005 Dr. Van Cleve’s family made additional contributions and included his name on this fund.

Each year a portion of the interest is used to assist scholarship students with various additional educational expenses that arise.

ELIZABETH SIMPSON WALTON ’71 FUND FOR COACHES’ PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Created by the siblings of Elizabeth “Beppy” Simpson Walton ’71 after her death, this unique fund gives an annual distribution to the Athletic Department for the purpose of sending full time and adjunct coaches to professional training sessions and seminars. Beppy Walton was an elite swimmer who also coached swimming for many years, and she knew the impact that good coaching could have on an athlete’s development.

This fund adds additional dollars to the Athletic Department’s existing budget for coaches’ professional development, making Episcopal’s investment in its coaching staff extraordinary.

SHIRLEY COX WEBB SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Established in 1979 by Dr. and Mrs. H. Warner Webb, this fund provides a scholarship for a deserving Middle or Upper School in memory of Shirley Cox Webb, mother of Dan Webb ’77, Patrick Webb ’79, and Julia Claire Webb ’85.

PARENT ORGANIZATIONS

Episcopal is deeply grateful to Linda and Rip duPont, who have endowed a scholarship as part of the Lead the Way campaign goal of building the school’s endowment. The Linda and Rip duPont Endowed Scholarship will support a child whose family’s financial circumstances would otherwise prevent the student from attending Episcopal. If possible, the scholarship will go to a deserving student who went to Beaches Episcopal School, where the duPonts’ children attended elementary school.

• P artnered with FANS and Boosters throughout the year to build community and improve communications across the three parent organizations.

• Decorated the ESJ campus for Christmas.

Provided donuts and hot chocolate for an “ugly Christmas sweater” themed holiday event for students.

Parents gained stronger knowledge and relationships which led to increased support for students, staff and other parents.

• Set up and supported Parent-Teacher conferences.

• Supported the senior class through the Senior Breakfast, the distribution of Senior Wills and awarded two community service scholarships to graduating seniors.

• Hosted three faculty and staff appreciation luncheons.

• G ranted Angel Awards for Middle School Time Timers, Counseling and Student Support Learning Stools, and partnered with FANS to purchase a screen printing press for the Photography Department.

• Supported Upper School Student Government by funding portions of their events during the year such as Homecoming, Winter Dance and Prom.

• H eld Lost and Found and Uniform Recycle events during the year. Partnered with the student Dominican Republic Club to collect all uniforms being phased out and send them to the orphanage supported by the club in the Dominican Republic.

• Held two College Prep 101 workshops open to all ESJ parents and students that focused on financial aid and making the most of college visits.

“Rip and I chose to do this scholarship because both schools provided a sound education within a strong spiritual community,” shared Linda.

Linda and Rip duPont have been a part of the Episcopal community since their children, Stacy ’88 and Tim ’91 - attended. Rip served on the Board of Trustees from 1987 to 1991, and they were parent of alumni chairs of The Episcopal Fund in 2013-2014. Linda and Rip’s son-in-law, Jake Nash, is a longtime member of the Episcopal faculty. Their grandson, William, is in eighth grade.

• Sponsorship of the Christmas Concert and reception at St. John’s Cathedral, Dance Concert reception, Band Concert reception, Middle School Art Show reception, Senior Art Show reception, and Chorus concert reception.

• Meal support for student performance days for all Fine Arts disciplines.

• Partial funding for Global Community Day guest speakers/artists.

• Funding for all banners promoting Fine Arts concerts and performances.

• Provided four scholarships so students could attend the State Thespian Festival.

• Created a new liaison role for team parents to help them navigate thru the many challenges faced as a team parent for the sports teams.

• Created a new liaison role for recruiting parents to get involved in all parent organizations.

• Financially supported many school spirit initiatives and athletic functions, including the Student Government’s “12th Man” group and new activities for the week of Homecoming, the Senior Athletic Banquet and Coaches Luncheon.

• Provided equipment to support the Athletic Department, including a new ice machine for the Walton Boathouse, signage to promote sports activities around the school, and a portable concessions stand to use around campus for different events.

• Organized a joint Boosters, FANS and PA parent volunteer appreciation luncheon including a fashion show.

• Held a breakfast meet and greet together with FANS and PA function to create excitement about the three organizations and grow participation.
