Page 1

I rm

DearEpiscopalCommunity,

I hope you will join me in celebrating the successes of the past yearas you look through our Report ofPhilanthropy. Our school continues to provide excellence across our Four Pillars for the more than 1,400 students we serve, and that is because of your decision to support our mission.

Together we have expandedour Beaches Campus to include a new gym, performing arts center, and library and innovation center, and we have started work on a new library and innovation center forSt. Mark's Campus.

Together we welcomed guests forfour wildlysuccessful community fundraisers that included everything from tacos to race medals. Through your generosity and with the help of our Episcopal Fund chairs and parent representatives, together we were able to raise more than a million dollars last year for The Episcopal Fund.

Together parent volunteers assistedwith Fall Festival and Boo Bash, Christmas at Episcopal, andTeacher AppreciationWeek. Our campuses welcomed hundreds of grandparents for our Grandparents' Day,andour Dads' Clubs offered their support on all three campuses whenever asked.

We welcomed hundreds of our beloved alumni back for Homecoming, class reunions, and othergatheringswhich gave them an opportunity to reconnect and remember their yearsas Episcopal students. We also traveledto visit with our alumni in major cities across the U.S. Seeing our alumni in their careers and communities is truly a source of pride forme.

Together we have accomplishedmore than we could have imaginedas a single campus or volunteer group. What an unbelievable community we have in our Episcopal family.

I am truly thankful for each and every one of you who continues to believe in Episcopal andwhat we do here for our students. There is no greater good than that of educating our children to become young adults who will help make our worlda better place.

Blessings, ALffa--

We arethrilled to beapartoftheEpiscopalSchoolofJacksonville, St. Mark'sCampuscommunity! Even though Eun grew up in Jacksonville, it was a big transition for the family to move to Jacksonville after spending 20 years in New York City.

Choosing ESJ was one of the more significant decisions we had to make as a part of our move, and we feel it was one of the best decisions we made for our family. Everything felt right from the beginning, and the ESJ administrators, faculty, and staff have done a tremendous job welcoming us into the community.

From the minute our oldest son, Ashton '36, enrolled in Pre-K3 last year, our family has had a rewarding experience. It is a true joy to see him thrive and enjoy his time at school.

Our one-year-old son, Pierce '39, joined his big brother and is a current student in ELP 1. Ashton has been anxiously waiting for his brother to join him on the St. Mark's Campus. Now, Ashton is even more motivated to go to school and our carpool time in the morning is even more exciting!

ESJ / 16 I 2022

In my 19 years of Naval service, I’ve had the opportunity to travel the world and experience distinctive communities.

I have never encountered a community with the spirit, generosity, and cohesiveness of Episcopal School of Jacksonville. When my wife, Stephanie, our two daughters Ava ‘32 and Mia ‘34, and I moved to Ortega, we were overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support our family received. It is rare to find a place with the warmth of a small town in a big city. I am reminded of the adage “it takes a village to raise a child,” and feel that Ortega and ESJ St. Mark’s Campus is more than a village – it is an extension of family.

It is because of the way that our community embraced us that we have been so inspired to give back. The Episcopal Fund is especially near and dear to our hearts. Stephanie grew up in the Ortega area and was raised by her single mother. She was able to attend St. Mark’s with assistance from the financial aid program, which is supported by The Episcopal Fund. The opportunity to volunteer for The Episcopal Fund felt like a natural way for us to give back to the school and community that gave our family so much. We served as Grade Level Representatives in 2018, Co-Chaired in 2021, and served as the 2022 Episcopal Fund Chairs in 2022 – a year that the fund raised more than $165,000 for the St. Mark’s Campus.

At the start of the 2021-2022 school year, The Rev. Adam Greene presented me with an opportunity to help grow the fellowship of the dads on the St. Mark’s Campus. Together, with the help of Rev. Greene and Susan Kwartler, I started the Dads’ Club. We had a vision that parents would not only have relationships within our children’s respective grade levels, but across the entire school and campus – ensuring that our “village” would grow and benefit not only our children, but the whole school. Once again, there was overwhelming support from the faculty, staff and parents – resulting in average attendance of more than 50 dads at each event and culminating in volunteering to staff the Ortega River Run Pasta Dinner. I truly believe the enhanced sense of fellowship sets a great example for our children of the necessity of a strong community.

We feel so privileged to be a part of the ESJ family and are passionate about sharing how much this community has to offer. From our personal experience and nearly two decades of military service, we understand how entering a new community and transitioning into a new school, especially with children, can be daunting for a family. When the Director of Enrollment for the St. Mark’s Campus, Kelli Chunn, reached out to Stephanie and me to be Parent Ambassadors, this also seemed like a natural fit. This was and continues to be a great opportunity for us to share our message of love for St. Mark’s Campus, our experiences through the grade levels, and personally connect with new members of the community so they feel the love and support we did.

Recentlycompletedgraphicrenderings of the Steve Williams Library and Learning Center tell the story of a welcoming, inspiring, and flexible space that will provide the St. Mark's Campus community a place to learn, gather, and access electronic and print resources. The design showcases a combination of open areas and dedicated zones with mobile, modular elements to serve a variety of functions from independent reading and study to small group and multi-class collaboration.

"The updated palette celebrates Mr. Williams by emphasizing whimsy throughout the space," said Blake Riley, Interior Designer, Group 4 Design. "Unique, geometric flooring and furniture alludes to one of his chosen subject matters (math) while bright color combinations fill the space to support developing minds and complement the building's origins maintained through the existing 1970s architecture."

The library is connected to the Innovation Lab. The union of these two spaces establishes an uplifting atmosphere that prioritizes childrens' education, community, and innovation while providing an engaging and playful learning environment for children of all ages.

Group 4 Design provided in-kind design services for the Steve Williams Library and Learning Center in memory of Steve Williams, beloved St. Mark's Campus teacher who taught the sons of Karie Kovacocy, architectural design principal, Group 4 Design.

"Group 4 Design has generously donated their time and talents to design a bright, open, and inviting space that will serve students, faculty and staff for years to come," said Beville Anderson, Head of Lower School, St. Mark's Campus. "Their important contribution is a true testament to the impact Steve made on the lives of students and families during his 30 years of teaching on the St. Mark's Campus."

Findingaschoolcommunity after relocating from Washington, D.C. was a top priority for our family. The relocation provided challenges and concerns over not only where we would live but also what school would be a good fit for our son. Based on recommendations, we toured the St. Mark's Campus and ended up enrolling there. As fate would have it, we found ourselves moving out to the Beaches area and transferring to the Beaches Campus. I was impressed by the kindness of Episcopal's teaching staff and administrators, how they incorporated the Orton Gillingham Approach to reading and spelling, and the campus's plans to expand their facilities with the new gym and technology center. So we enrolled our son for the upcoming year in second grade.

We found ourselves connecting with the school community through volunteer opportunities. As a first-time family, we signed up for the Boo Bash and The Parent Social Committee, and volunteered as the Homeroom Parent to help support my son's teacher. Adrien joined the Dads' Club and participated in the socials and meetings. He also offered a "Chef Dinner" as an auction item for The Parent Social event to raise money for the school. The Parent Social surpassed its goal and offered a new casual approach to community fellowship and stewardship.

One of my earliest memories was the first mom's dinner I arranged for our class. Because we had left D.C., after living there for 16 years, it was important to connect and hopefully form friendships with parents, and we did! We love our ESJ community. To any new family, I would recommend familiarizing yourself with our school community, and a great way to do that is to volunteer. It's a great way to connect you with other families and to be a part of your child's educational journey. Working alongside parents who also care about the school allows you to broaden your network of friends. As first-time donors and as new parents, we see how all gifts, large or small, make a difference!

Our son is now entering his second year at Episcopal. When we are not volunteering at school, you can find us at the beach, boating, playing tennis, at Davis Park for soccer, and touring homes and renovating properties. I am a realtor, with a love for design, at Ponte Vedra Club Realty. Adrien is the owner of Mistral Design and Build, and formally a classically French trained chef.

Beaches Campus officially opened its new gym and performing arts center, and state of the art library and learning center, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, September 9, led by The Rev. Adam Greene, Head of School at Episcopal School of Jacksonville, and Jennifer Ketchum, Head of Lower School, Beaches Campus.

The new gym and performing arts center features a varsity sized court and two half courts, retractable basketball goals and bleachers, a performance stage and dressing rooms, curtains and chairs, and theatre lighting system. As part of the expansion, the school created a new library and media and innovation center named for the Cordell family in thanks for their generosity. The campus's playground was moved to the site of the current outdoor basketball court and a school-owned building on an adjacent lot was razed to provide additional parking.

Attendees included members of the Episcopal drumline, Talon the Eagle mascot, Varsity cheerleaders, and the Upper School and Lower School basketball teams, Christine Hoffman, Mayor of Jacksonville Beach; Beaches Campus students in grades Pre-K 3 through fifth grade; Episcopal faculty and staff; and parents, and friends of the school.

"Many donors gave generously to this campaign, and I especially thank the Petway family for sharing our vision for this facility from the very beginning. I also give special thanks to Jennifer Ketchum for her leadership; and thanks to our construction partners, Summit Construction, for the hard work in bringing this vision into reality," said Rev. Greene. "We know that generations to come will benefit from this space for years and years. We are so grateful to so many in our Episcopal community who have made these new facilities possible."

WhenCharlesandRushtonHaskellCallaghan'82 enrolled their son Hampton at Beaches Episcopal School (now Beaches Campus) in Pre-K they knew they had found the right school for their family.

"I'm an Episcopal alumna and we knew we wanted an Episcopal school for our oldest child," said Rushton Haskell Callahan '82. They had no idea their relationship with the school would still be going strong more than 20 years later. But that's exactly what happened and countless students have benefited from their commitment to the Beaches Campus.

TheSamaraFamily quickly became an integral part of the Beaches Campus after enrolling their son David '31 four years ago. They found themselves connecting with the school community by volunteering when Abeer joined The Episcopal Fund Parent Representative Committee and Fine Arts Committee.

"From helping with Episcopal Fund Carpool events to changing out the artwork around campus, there are so many opportunities to get involved and broaden your network of friends," said Abeer.

"Four years ago we visited the school," recounted Abeer. "It was such a good fit for David. We had heard so many wonderful things about Episcopal. I was impressed by the campus and educational philosophy and enrolled him for the upcoming school year in first grade."

David has done everything Episcopal has to offer, exploring athletics and after school activities. Abeer and David have been right there for those big moments.

"It's wonderful to see your child do well and to have that feeling of being part of a family," said Abeer.

David is now engaged in numerous activities like basketball, soccer, flag football and band, creating memories for a lifetime. When the Samaras are not on campus, you can find them enjoying time with friends and family or traveling.

"To new and returning families, I would recommend getting involved with our school community. It's a great way to meet new people and create lifelong friendships," said Abeer. "Volunteering at the Beaches Campus can be as simple as lending a few minutes of your time to help out the Faculty and Staff or help out with large scale events like The Episcopal Fund or Beach Bash. As a campus volunteer,I see how the gift of time can make a difference in the life of our school community."

Episcopalwasapositiveinfluenceonmylife during my six formative years as a student, and I feel fortunate to be able to give back so the school can continue their amazing work. Professionally, in my 25-plus years of working in the not-for-profit sector, I'm well aware of the significance that supporters of all levels can have in allowing charitable organizations to carry out their missions.

I've had the privilege of experiencing Episcopal on many levels as a student, an Alumni Board member, a staff member, and also as a parent. Each of these has contributed to my love for the school, which continues to grow with time. I made lifelong friends as a student, and being able to share the Episcopal experience with my son are just two of my priceless souvenirs the school has given me.

Episcopal is a school that understands the importance of student leadership, providing its students with opportunities and fostering an environment where we are encouraged to be creative. I found many opportunities to lead my peers in areas I was most passionate about, like Eagle Ambassadors and numerous clubs. I will never forget Mrs. Gay in the Office of Admission telling me that the job of Episcopal's teachers, club coordinators, student organization directors, and administrators isn't to lead us. No! It's to guide the students, provide the proper tools, and foster an environment where we are comfortable taking charge, challenging each other, and creating something extraordinary. Few schools give students full creative latitude. That is something invaluable and entirely unique to Episcopal.

I believe each one of us has a passion buried deep inside. Those passions may be a hobby, passing time, or simply something that makes our heart yearn and brain excited. More often than not, to unlock our passions, all it takes is a push in the right direction or a nudge to try something new. I've known since a young age I've wanted to venture into medicine. With physicians in my family, every corner I turn leads me to this field. But, it wasn't until I had the opportunity to join Songbird Music Therapy in eighth grade did I discover my greatest passion-neuroscience. I'd like to say I always had it in me, but Songbird was the key to unlocking what makes me excited.

The five-year experience leading music therapy for Florida elderly living with Alzheimer's Disease helped me witness (and document) the interconnection between music, behavior, and associative memory. Naturally curious, this spark led me to conduct my own behavioral studies, researching and observing a link between the calming or excitement-inducing behavioral byproducts of musical stimulation.

This is what Episcopal does! It gives students the keys, encourages us to try something different, and unlocks the passions hidden within us. Without Episcopal's offerings, I'm unsure if I would've found my greatest passions. After being at Episcopal for six years, surrounded by a diverse, intelligent, compassionate group of peers and teachers, I know they've helped center me on what is most important: a relationship with God, an unwavering love for every person I encounter, and the confidence to make bold decisions.

While in school at Episcopal, I don't think my peers nor I ever truly understood why we give back to our community. We always questioned why we should give to The Episcopal Fund, help the school, or even support an Episcopal event. Looking back and reflecting on my experiences, I want to help provide current and new students, like my little brother Christian '28, with the opportunity to have the same extraordinary time I had at this school.

ESJprovidedmewithastrongfoundationacrossalldisciplines that allowed me to step into the next stages of life with confidence. Through the academic edge and leadership experience I gained at ESJ, I was able to go into college and into my career with the skills, tools, and network to be successful.

Episcopal created a safe space for exploration of my passions. Whether it was academics, sports, the arts, leadership, or other areas, I always felt supported by my Episcopal network to try new things and to not be afraid to fail.

I give back to the school because gifts allow current and future students to have the same incredible opportunities that I had when I was an ESJ student. Giving back will enable ESJ to continue growing and adapting to meet the needs of our ever-changing world.

As we made the decision to move our family to Jacksonville, Grace applied to several schools in the area and we let her make the decision on where to go. She chose Episcopal because it felt right! To us, that was all that mattered.

QWhen you entrust your child to someone, you want them to feel connected, cared for and lifted up. We are happy each morning to leave her at Episcopal.

Grace enjoys tennis and art club, and French and math.

We are modest donors, but we also know that schools need support to bring the best to our children and the school community.

WhenClijfDunnwasintheninthgrade, his family attended Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra. The rector was the Rev. Alexander "Sandy" Juhan, whose father, The Rt. Rev. Frank Juhan, served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Florida in the 1950s, when the idea for creating an Episcopal high school first began. Sandy Juhan asked young Cliff if he'd like to attend Epsicopal.

"My parents valued education, but they didn't have the means to send me to Episcopal, and I was pretty sure I wasn't smart enough," Cliff said, "but Fr. Juhan said if I passed the entrance exam he had some funds he could allocate toward a scholarship for me. That opportunity made a tremendous difference in my life."

Cliff came to Epsicopal as a sophomore and got involved right from the beginning. He ran cross country and track, played soccer, and sang in the chorus led by Mr. Rickard until he graduated. He was a member of the yearbook staff.

The academic work was a rigorous change from his previous school. "I was overwhelmed at first," he said. "I can remember sitting under the Great Oak, and I had all of my school stuff laid out in front of me, and I just had an epiphany about how I was going to succeed."

After Episcopal, Cliff went to Florida State. "Episcopal taught me time management and how to be a good student," he said. "When I took the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests my senior year, I scored well enough to test out of almost two years of introductory courses in college."

Cliff went to FSU to study to become a teacher, as he felt his own education and his teachers at Epsicopal had made a profound difference in his life. He taught math for 25 years before retiring in 2017. "I was the Mel Hazen of James Weldon Johnson," he said.

Because of Cliff's experience at Episcopal, he committed to making the school a part of his estate plans. He says it was a simple process of learning what the options were and getting the documents signed.

Making this planned gift was gratifying for Cliff. "I could never repay what the education that I got at Episcopal meant to me," he says. "I got there on a lucky bet and so I want to make that possible for someone else."

OurSeekBoldlyIIStrategicPlanhasidentifiedthe followingkeyareasasfundingprioritiesfortheschool:

Investing in our teachers. Episcopal's excellent faculty makes our mission possible, and open positions are attracting top candidates locally and from across the country. The ability to retain and attract the best people is paramount to our continued success. Our coaches and fine arts instructors, though their classrooms are on a field, stage, studio, or court, are teachers, too.

Staying on the forefront of technology. Both broadly (in terms of campus infrastructure) and specifically (being known and recognized for technology instruction), our commitment to appropriate use of technology requires careful curation and thought leadership.

Continuing our commitment to learner-centered teaching. Across the Four Pillars, experiential learning, flipped classrooms, Harkness teaching, and differentiated instruction are all key to the best educational outcomes.

Reaching our diversity goals. Led by our Awareness, Inclusion, and Respect (AIR) Committee, we are engaging in diversity initiatives which enrich the entire community while preserving the sense that we all belong to the same community.

Ensuring that our facilities deliver. When our facilities limit our ability to be able to provide the education and value that Episcopal represents, capital projects and campaigns help us solve today's challenges and plan for tomorrow.
