THE POWER OF BEING A GIVING PERSON! Wow! What a fantastic year it’s been!

As I look back and reflect on the year past, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for all those who have played their part in making this paper such a success. The feedback I receive has inspired me onward!

So many people have been involved: delivery volunteers, printers, graphic designers, proof readers, gardeners, sports car buffs, educators, counsellors, historians, our community heroes. But most of all I want to thank and honour our advertisers. Some have had great and measurable returns from their investment in advertising in our paper, and some have had little return. Now here’s the thing, and this is what I have noticed – many of those who have seen little financial return have kept on advertising, just to support the community and keep the paper going – how amazing is that!

Those of us who have lived a little know full well that the majority of people in the big world out there are out to get as much as they can. This is an ugly truth about the world in which we live. But thankfully, not all people are like that. There are others who are givers, and what a lovely endearing character quality this is.

But actually, there is a third type of person – matchers. According to Wharton Professor Adam Grant in his book Give and Take, there are three types of people in the world: givers, takers, and matchers.

Givers focus on other people’s needs.

I’ve met people in HH like this! They are the salt of the earth.

• Takers: take more than they give.

Takers focus on their own needs. They believe that the world is competitive and that to succeed, they need to be better than others. In 2018, I met people in HH like this too, some with a very high community profile.

Or is the matchers, the people who believe firmly in even exchange — “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine?” It will probably be no surprise to you to learn that research shows that it’s givers that are the most successful in the long term – most financially prosperous and emotionally healthy.

So, this is the message I want to leave you with – please support all our advertisers.

4 KEYS TO OVERCOME LONELINESS When I first arrived New Zealand some years ago, I was “lost” for a few months. I felt lonely, unsettled and even fearful. I was once an established teacher in Malaysia with a busy schedule. The change here in terms of culture and life style could be overwhelming. I would like to share how I overcome my loneliness and how I learnt to connect with people.

Key#1 Value our self-worth

It is common for us to feel insignificant at some points in our lives. In a new environment, I felt not only insignificant but also doubted my self-worth. So I enrolled for a college study. This helped me regained my self-worth and I discovered a deeper understanding of myself. We need to stay positive, find ways to discover our potential and trust our creator who does love us.

Key#2 Take initiative.

Be Proactive.

Key#4 Stay Connected

Study has shown that staying connected with others is good for our moods and even physical health. Real connection goes beyond just talking or sharing interest. It involves being open and available to each other. We show our empathy and compassion to others during their challenging time.

Some examples of real connection: • Catching a stranger’s eyes and both smile.

• Sharing an experience with another that involves laughter and goodwill.

• Being listened to and understood during a conversation.

• Taking time to listen to others and showing them empathy.

• Offering sincere gratitude to others and vice versa.

Mother Teresa says, “Loneliness and feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty”. I encourage you to practice these 4 keys - you’ll notice the difference!

It is important to take initiative and move out of our comfort zone. Instead of “mourning” at home, we can step out. The community centre in my area offers classes like yoga, walkers, Zumba, English language, drawing etc. I joined the walkers group and enjoy it. As we walk, we share our cultures and lives with each other. What a wonderful way to make friends.

EFFECTING CHANGE Hi, the section I like most is the Living Well page. I always find it helpful. I have struggled socially all my life. I find these articles give me a lift.

Nikau seeds are first formed in the pods, which John shows in the picture, but before they can be planted, they must form into seeds. When they are red they are ripe for planting. Just wanted to correct what John said. They can’t be planted until they become seeds, and not before.

Highlands has offered 10 such packages - six have been sold so far while two others have been donated to charity - the Halberg Trust

It has a top speed of more than 320 kilometres per hour and a 0-100kmh time of 3 seconds. Fast cars need good stoppers and it has carbon ceramic disc brakes while there is a six-speed sequential gearbox, variable traction control and a fully-adjustable suspension to the power to the track. Buyers also get a detailed driver training programme and car support at tracks around the world, as well as seat time in other Aston Martins.

Buyers can order the car in any colour they like and Spillane said Quinn’s choice is unique.

She started as a check out operator, then became a checkout supervisor, then moved to where she is now - responsible for managing all the Trade Account Managers. Not only is she fun and hard working, but she’s a smart and dedicated team player. The perfect employee, Lisa has established herself as a vital member of the Mega Mitre 10 family here at our Lincoln Road store. Thank you for who you are Lisa!

CAPTAIN CHARLES UPHAM

NZ’s Most Famous Soldier Charles Upham is perhaps NZ’s most famous soldier.

He was only the third person ever to receive the Victoria Cross twice, and the very first combatant to do so.

What is the Victoria Cross? It’s a decoration awarded for conspicuous

Carrying a bag of grenades (his favourite weapon), Upham on his own first attacked a German machine-gun nest, killing eight paratroopers, then destroyed another which had been set up in a house. Finally, he crawled to within 15 yards of a Bofors anti-aircraft gun before knocking it out.

During the retreat from Crete, Upham succumbed to dysentery and could not eat properly. The effect of this and his wounds made him look like a walking skeleton, his commanding officer noted. Nevertheless, he found the strength to climb the side of a 600 ft deep ravine and use a Bren gun on a group of advancing Germans. At a range of 500 yards he killed 22 out of 50.

His subsequent VC citation recorded that he had “performed a series of remarkable exploits, showing outstanding leadership, tactical skill and utter indifference to danger”. Even under the hottest fire, Upham never wore a steel helmet, explaining that he could never find one to fit him.

Why did he receive these distinguished medals - twice?

Upham was awarded his first Victoria Cross on Crete in May 1941, commanding a platoon in the battle for Maleme airfield.

During the course of an advance of 3,000 yards his platoon was held up three times.

When the advance had been completed he helped carry a wounded man to safety in full view of the enemy, and then ran half a mile under fire to save a company from being cut off. Two Germans who tried to stop him were killed.

The next day Upham was wounded in the shoulder by a mortar burst and hit

bravery in the Commonwealth armed services, instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856.

This is why he was awarded his first VC. What he did to receive his second VC is even more amazing. That’s in the next issue!

WIGHT OPTOMETRISTS HOW I LOST MY FEAR OF BULLIES Noe Jr Mancao started Muaythai (a form of kick boxing) when he was 19.

HHCNews: Noe, why did you choose kickboxing?

Noe: You see, I was very weak when I was a kid and I was bullied a lot of the time but I was blessed because my best friend was one of the toughest kid in our school. Most of the time, he was able to protect me from the bullies. When he was not around though, I was terrified. I wanted to join a self defence school but I could not find any in our home area. When I came to New Zealand, I found a Muaythai gym and I joined. I was determined to stop being bullied!

HHCNews: No more bullying now you are a champion?

Noe: That’s right. The bullies now run for cover!

But for me, kickboxing is much more than being a champion fighter. The exciting thing for me is character development. Yes, it is a very hard and tough art but if you remain in it and do not quit, surely you will grow as a person.I have learned self-control, discipline, and how to be healthy emotionally and physically. Jesus Christ is big now in my life as well. He helps me.

Noe: This is a full contact sport and considered dangerous by most people because competitors have only one goal in mindand that is to hit your opponent using your hands, kicks, knees and elbows and not to be hit. I won the North Island title belt twice. Every fight is scary for me and I get really nervous before stepping into the ring with thoughts that I might going to get hurt or get knocked out. Based on my experience with my 23 fights, the only way to overcome fear is to face it. I follow Nike’s slogan to” Just do it” regardless of what I think and feel. H HCNews: Has anyone died kick boxing?

Noe: Yes, a few people have died in the Muaythai competition. But people die from driving a car orfishing. For me, I believe that everything you do has a risk. Yes, people need to be aware of safety. The biggest thing I have overcome is my fear of not able to protect myself and my loved ones from bad people. Kickboxing has solved the “being bullied” problem I once had. Those who once bullied me know now that I could seriously damage them if I wanted to.

As a consequence, they have turned from being bullies to wanting to be my friends.

ALL THE WAY FROM HUNGARY TO HENDERSON HEIGHTS! Now living on Leafield Crescent, George and Kata have come all the way from Hungary to live in HH! “We came here” says George “because friends had visited here and told us how beautiful it was.

Also, we heard that New Zealanders were really friendly, open minded, and helpful.” Kata chips in “But George, people who visit Hungary say that about Hungarians too!” We all laugh. I ask, “Kata, can you give me an example of how New Zealander are open minded?”

“Yes, of course. For example, in New Zealand I am nannying at the moment.

On the way to school one day, one of the children we passed was a boy, and he was dressed like a princess. In NZ it’s fine, and no one judges, but in Hungary, no one would let to dress their boy in the outfit of a princess!”

“And what do you love about HH” I ask.

“Well” says Kata, “I love lake Panorama.”

“It’s absolutely beautiful” Says George “There is a sign beside the lake which says it’s a pond!” I say “No, that can’t be right! It’s called Lake Panorama. Anyway, what is the difference between a pond and a lake? Maybe a pond is a small lake, and a lake is a big pond!” We laugh some more and ponder the question. “I also like the pace of life here in NZ” says Kata “compared with Hungary, New Zealand is very laid back and slow paced. The difference between NZ and Hungary in this respect is huge!” (Maybe she hasn’t

seen Lincoln Road in rush hour?)

George is currently working as a gib fixer, but in Hungary he was a content creative and video editor. Really, he would like to get back to this kind of job in NZ “GIB fixing is work, but film making is my passion!” says George.

I met Terri from Fitzwater Place in person at the beginning of November. We are so lucky to have her in HH! Listen to just a little about what she does and how she helps so many people!

Terri: I started taking Vision Board Workshops in January 2017 to help people become more self aware of how they really want to live their lives.

What’s a Vision Board? It’s a tool used to help clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on specific life goals. It is a collection of a wide variety of inspirational images, a pictorial representation of your vision - a powerful way to make your dreams more tangible and attainable.

I find most people live their days by reacting to their external five senses – what they see, hear, smell, taste and touch. We have become so busy and stretched, disconnected and distracted from ourselves we don’t make or give time to listen to that deep, gentle, wise voice inside us that knows what we really need at any given moment.

The year got underway with news of a visit from the Education Review Office. The visit was a huge success, staff and Board were delighted to get the affirmation that they deserved.

A huge amount of work has been completed in the property area this year. Lots of cleaning up of areas around the School that had not been in use and the old woodwork room becoming our lovely new Whare Waananga. Work of the Board Chairman, Ron Crawford, has seen all these exciting changes in School Property come to pass! “ Ron under estimates just how much work he does to really make things happen here!” Principal Wendy Esera said.

End of year achievement data is pleasing showing again the Year 8 progress over their 2 years here. With intermediates only having 2 year levels, the only true comparison can be

made between achievement end of Year 7 and the achievement at the end of Year 8, a year later. In Reading there was a 14% shift, Writing a 15% shift and Mathematics a 13% shift. In Reading and Writing, Female students are our highest achievers, while in Mathematics, it is the Boys who are the stars!

As we look ahead to 2019, we have a bursting roll! There is now no space left for another class and the Ministry of Education are busy with plans to address our classroom teaching space shortage.
