NEW AND
noteworthy IN 2027
EXPANDED ACADEMIC ELECTIVES In an effort to prepare our learners for a rapidly changing workplace, ensure a rich grounding in creative areas, and allow students to create their own pathways, our academic electives are reviewed each year. This year, our elective offerings expand in the arts, including drama, as well as in Portuguese studies and discussion-based courses in the humanities. As always, students will provide feedback as we continue to grow and refine the program. Final elective offerings will reflect student interest, staffing, and scheduling considerations.
RENEWED PATHWAY GUIDANCE Learners receive guidance on the various diploma pathways in a progressive way throughout high school. Just as the College and Career Counseling program has a “WAKE” program (Wonder, Act, Know, and Execute) in relation to future planning from grades 9 to 12, the high school team guides learners through their academic program. Advisory class is the first forum for broad discussion of pathways and for the beginning of work on their Global Citizen Diploma. As learners enter grade 10, they participate in portfolio building in both Advisory and in Project Mentorship. Grade 10 is also the time when counselors and the College and Career Counseling office give learners advice in one-on-one meetings in relation to pursuing the AP Capstone diploma. All learners also enroll in AP Seminar in order to ensure that everyone is on track. In grade 11 the learners refine their choices, refine their portfolios and embark on projects for the Innovation Diploma.
STRENGTHENED ACADEMIC GUIDANCE In 2027 we are pleased to initiate a clearer structure to academic guidance and course selection. Learners first are familiarized with this Course Catalogue in an advisory class. Their Advisors introduce key points and show grade-level course choices to learners. Over the next week, learners have time to talk to consult educators, talk to other learners, and have conversations with their parents. This period culminates in a student-only “course fair” that gives learners the chance to more formally interact with educators, leaders and selected learners who discuss their experiences in a course. The final guidance comes in a one-on-one meeting with a counselor or leader who will help the learner make final decisions and register their choices.

GENERAL
information
HIGH SCHOOL DAILY SCHEDULE Our high school follows a 6 day block schedule rotation. This means that learners meet with each of their educators/each discipline every other day. Additionally, learners meet with their advisory class every day. Once per week, the schedule allows for an extended advisory period in order to focus on important topics related to wellbeing, social-emotional learning and Habits of Mind.
GUIDED INDEPENDENT STUDY Grade 11 and 12 learners have the (recommended) option of a guided independent study block. This block is time in a learner’s schedule that allows them to access personal, academic, or college application support while also providing opportunities to collaborate with classmates and build connections with their peers. Independent study blocks also offer guided study for external exams such as SAT and Vestibular.
ADVISORY PROGRAM The high school advisory program ensures that every learner feels known, cared for, and valued. Advisory serves as a consistent space for reflection, mentorship, and connection - anchored in the belief that meaningful relationships and purpose-driven learning are essential to growth. Drawing on the Project Wayfinder framework, learners engage in activities that build self-awareness, empathy, adaptability, and agency while exploring questions of identity and purpose. Advisory also provides structured mentorship for learners pursuing the Global Citizen Diploma, supporting them as they document experiences, reflect on impact, and set personal goals aligned with the school’s values. In addition, advisory integrates career and college counseling through the W.A.K.E. framework—Wonder, Act, Know, and Execute - guiding learners from exploration to action as they envision their future pathways. Each advisory group consists of learners in the same grade who work with the same faculty advisory. Advisors every day for 20 minutes with their groups to nurture a sense of belonging and to provide academic, social, and emotional guidance. Once per week Advisory will meet for 40 minutes in order to accommodate longer learning sessions, presentations, assemblies and other activities. Advisory strengthens learners’ sense of identity and connection to the community, helping them navigate the challenges and opportunities of adolescence while preparing them for life beyond school.

TAKING UPPER-GRADE-LEVEL COURSES In exceptional cases, learners may request to take a course at a higher level. These requests are subject to approval by the department and the leadership team and are based on a combination of the following: academic preparation, standardized test results and social-emotional readiness. Course descriptions are subject to change based on learning needs and school discretion.
COURSE SELECTION PROCESS Selecting courses is an important opportunity for learners to shape their learning journey with purpose and reflection. After reviewing the information in this guide, learners should consider available choices that reflect their interests, offer balance, and help to prepare them for the future. Before selecting courses, learners are encouraged to discuss their choices with parents, educators, and academic leaders. Conversations about goals, workload, and future pathways help ensure that selections align with both university aspirations and personal growth. Learners should understand that in early years of high school, the program is mostly common for all learners in order to give everyone a base for future study. Learners will have a choice of electives. At higher grade levels learners will begin to make choices that more closely align with their post high school plans. It is important to note that all pathways offer the opportunity for global study. Course selection will take place face-to-face in individual meetings with a counselor, coach or other leader in the high school. Eighth grade students will discuss their choices and register their choices with a middle school counselor or coach. All educators and members of leadership as well as the College and Career Counseling office are available to answer questions or offer guidance during the process. Once selections are submitted, learners will have a limited opportunity to review or make adjustments before schedules are finalized.
