W

ell it’s been a great year and the leaves have finally turned colors and most of them are down in my yard.

I’m really not looking forward to what comes next but like the rest of you I have no choice, “snow”. I hope your year went by without incident and this finds you in good health.

As usual, the chapter has been busy this year with the handling of the building, everyday business, and different events. Next year looks like it will be busy also. All our events and fundraisers are in the planning stages right now. They are the All-You-Can-Eat, being called Spring Fling, the Buckeye Wheelchair Games, National Veterans Wheelchair Games, Golf Outing and I’m sure there might be one or two I forgot. As always we look for members that want to participate and/or help with any and all of these events. Watch your newsletter and the chapter website, www.buckeyepva.org , or all dates, locations and times for these events. Hope to see a lot of you there.

Please keep in mind that this is an election year of the Board of Directors for the chapter. I urge all of you to at least consider about running for one of the nine positions that will be open. Members can always sit in any regular board meeting they wish to; this would give you a very small idea of what you’re involved in should you decide to run. Should you have any questions please contact myself or any of the other board members. We will be happy to help.

ello everyone! It's Fall and the leaves have fallen off the trees and winter is knocking on the door. It's also the start of the Holiday Season!

We have so many things to be thankful for; being blessed to be living to see another Thanksgiving and Christmas, and be around family. Here's something to think about it comes from Psalms 50: 14. Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the most high, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me. With that being said, Congress averted a government shutdown, by approving temporary funding through the holidays. And will go back to working on a budget at the first of the year in 2024 hopefully being able to pass it. If you would like to read more of the subject I've attached copies of the November Washington updates.

PVA is still advocating for our policy priorities and issues that impact veterans that are living with disabilities. Have a Great Holiday Season and be safe!

Veterans Mortgage Life Insurance When it comes to honoring our veterans, it is crucial to provide them with comprehensive support and protection. One such measure is the Veteran’s Mortgage Life Insurance (VMLI) program, designed to offer financial security to veterans and their families. In this article, we will explore the details of VMLI, its benefits, eligibility criteria, and how it can safeguard veterans and their loved ones.

What is Veteran’s Mortgage Life Insurance (VMLI)?

Veteran’s Mortgage Life Insurance is a unique insurance program offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). It provides mortgage protection coverage to disabled veterans who have received a VA Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant for the purchase, construction, or modification of a home. VMLI ensures that the outstanding mortgage balance on the veteran’s home is paid off in the event of their untimely death.

Benefits of VMLI: Mortgage Protection: The primary benefit of VMLI is that it pays off the remaining mortgage balance on the veteran’s home, thereby relieving the burden from their family members or dependents. 3. Have an outstanding mortgage balance on the property.

4. Be under the age of 70.

Adopt A Turkey

T

his Thanksgiving we did “adopt a Turkey” for the holidays. The owners adopted their turkeys then took them on adventures and posted them on social media. Quite a few turkeys went on some fun adventures. Don’t worry if you didn’t get a chance to get your own turkey. We will have more adoptions in the future!

Buckeye Hero Hunt

n October 13-15,2023 I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Buckeye Hero Hunt Southeastern Ohio. The participants are limited to twenty (20) Hunters per year. We were provided everything we needed except hunting clothes and toiletries.

This was a very welcoming group of individuals that put on this hunt and they were all volunteers.

On Friday, the first day we went out and sited in the crossbows that we would use the following two days.

Saturday and Sunday we were in the woods early to hunt. I was lucky enough to harvest a does first thing Saturday morning. Although I did not see anything else it was a great time in the outdoors.

More Information is provided below if you are interested in participating in this event. The applications will be available in April 2024.

The Buckeye Hero Hunt is a Bow/Crossbow deer hunt in Southeastern Ohio. This hunt provides a *qualified disabled veteran with the opportunity to experience a guided and assisted deer hunt. This opportunity is at no cost to the veteran or sponsor. All meals, lodging, equipment, guides, and deer processing will be provided. *ATTENTION - To be eligible for this hunt, applicants must be qualified disabled veterans that are residents of Ohio and be honorable discharged from the military. In addition all hunters must possess the ODNR Division of Wildlife free hunting license. This can be reviewed in the Division of Wildlife handbook or website; http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/hunting-trapping-andshooting-sports/hunting-trapping-regulations/licenses-and-permits The ODNR Division of Wildlife defines this free license as: Permanently and totally disabled veterans who receive pension or compensation due to their service-related injuries and who are Ohio residents must apply in writing for a free hunting license, fur taker permit, either-sex deer permit, turkey permit, and Ohio Wetlands Habitat Stamp. Applications must be certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

ello Buckeye PVA members, last month I got a phone call from my old coach of the Buckeye Blitz wheelchair rugby team. He asked if I could join them for a tournament in Grand Rapids Michigan. I agreed to play with them, and their newest player Charles Scott who is also a Buckeye PVA member. Playing in his first tournament, I thought I could be some help. I even rode with him and his brother Brandon for the five hour plus drive up to Grand Rapids. It’s a beautiful drive with all the leaves changing colors. I was happy to be a passenger. We played against several teams, even the newly formed University of Michigan team.

For having new players, some playing in their first tournament, we played well as a thrown together team, and won third place.

On December second and third my team the Oscar Mike Militia. The only all veteran team in the country. I will be playing against the official Buckeye Blitz team in Columbus. In the Blitz official tournament at the Cleo Dumaree athletic complex. 276 South Nelson Rd, Columbus. Near Franklin park conservatory, and botanical gardens. It is free of charge to watch, good cheap entertainment. I would love to see members come to watch!

ovember 10th I was at a ball in Chicago, celebrating the Marine Corps birthday, and the creation of Oscar Mike. It’s usually held on November 11th because Oscar Mike was created on 11/11/2011. But this year we shared it with the Marine Corps birthday to keep it in a Friday. It was a great event, everyone in formal clothes, accentuated with red. To Remember Everyone Deployed. The ball was a event that recognized all those that have donated to Oscar Mike. And celebrate the events and athletes, and all that has been accomplished through the year. The ball started with a nice dinner, a ceremony to recognize donors, and a celebration for all the Oscar Mike athletes, including a great dinner, a auction of some great memorabilia and items, a open bar, legal gambling and tattoos in the back of the room.

I’ve been a member of Oscar Mike since they started. And a member of the Militia, Oscar Mike’s rugby team since our first tournament in Milwaukee back in 2012.

OM was started when two Marines Noah Currier, and Tim Vixay we’re talking at the national veterans Wheelchair Games in 2011. About a way to keep veterans active. It started in Noah’s garage by making military theme T-shirts to sell to help the mission. Over the years, it has grown to a thriving nonprofit with partners like Google and Amazon. They have programs near Chicago where you fly a plane, jump out of a plane, fire weapons, drive razors in a course, and other fun stuff. On the last day, you even compete in a mini triathlon using a hand cycle, rugby chair, and a kayak. They also have a program in Estes Park, Colorado that you get to camp inside of the Rocky Mountains where they take you to see some beautiful sites. We took a trail around salamander lake that had only river otters and salamanders living in it.

Yeah, those big salamanders with gills on the sides of their face. Beautiful surroundings everywhere, lots of elk.

We even seen a moose. If any of these programs or activities interest you, please look up oscarmike.org and find some of the programs that might suit you. It is open to any of our PVA members. Oscar Mike will provide your food, lodging, and travel. And if interested, The Militia will be playing rugby in Columbus on December 2nd and third at the Cleo Dumaree athletic complex. New Study Testing How Non-Invasive Pelvic Stimulation May Impact Bowel Function

I

n spinal cord injury, or SCI, nerves that communicate between the brain and body are damaged. In addition to weakness and numbness, other functions are often impacted, including the digestive track. For people living with SCI, bowel control and dysfunction are among their biggest perceived challenges. Despite numerous medications and timeconsuming routines, constipation and incontinence (accidents) are still common. More research and innovative tools are needed.

One such approach is genital nerve stimulation. Genital nerve stimulation involves electrodes (sticky pads) placed on the skin to stimulate the nerves in the pelvis. Other studies have shown that treatments with genital nerve stimulation can help calm and change the reflexes involved in urinating, resulting in fewer bladder accidents. Early data suggests that genital nerve stimulation can also improve bowel function by changing the reflexes used to defecate (pooh). By relaxing the colon, genital nerve stimulation may allow better storage of stool, which then can lead to fewer bowel accidents. An earlier study showed that genital nerve stimulation reduces bowel accidents in persons with unexplained fecal incontinence.

So, it is reasonable to believe that genital nerve stimulation will help improve bowel control after SCI. Researchers in Cleveland recently received funding for a new study to help understand this more. The goal of this study is to evaluate the short-term effect of genital nerve stimulation on the reflexes used to defecate and the practicality of using genital nerve stimulation daily at home to test the long-term effects.

This grant involves 2 separate studies. In the 1st study, which we are currently recruiting for, 52 persons with SCI from trauma (such as car crashes, falls, gunshot wounds, etc.) will be enrolled. During 1 study visit (about 6 hours), each participant will be evaluated using physical exams, interviews, and a test called anorectal manometry. Anorectal manometry is a test that is kind of similar to the urodynamics cystoscopy test for the bladder. During anorectal manometry a catheter is placed a short distance into the rectum and measures the pressures, movements, reflexes, and sensations. This is done first without any stimulation, then their response to low level (sham) and high level (treatment) genital nerve stimulation is tested.

Assistance with transportation is available, if needed, as well as an overnight stay at our wheelchair accessible Zubizarreta House if you live further away. The results from this 1st study will help us understand how brief periods of surface stimulation of the genital nerve changes bowel reflex activity and it will help us predict who will be a responder versus a non-responder for the 2nd study.

In the 2nd study, 12 people who responded well to genital nerve stimulation in the 1st study will be enrolled. This study will not be open for recruitment until late 2024. All participants will maintain their usual bowel routine and nutritional habits while completing a daily diary of their bowel movements. Each participant will be re-evaluated using physical exams, interviews, and anorectal manometry evaluations, and will then be randomly assigned to the treatment stimulation group or the sham stimulation group. All participants will be trained to perform genital nerve stimulation at home, every day for 6-8 hours over four weeks. The sham group will have devices programmed to deliver ineffective stimulation, whereas the treatment group will receive effective stimulation.

After four weeks, both groups will be reevaluated. Each person will not do any stimulation for another two weeks before being re-evaluated a final time. The results from the 2nd study will help us understand if genital nerve stimulation is a feasible option to improve bowel dysfunction, bowel incontinence, and quality of life in persons with SCI. It is a high priority to individuals living with SCI to regain autonomic function such as bowel control. Bowel dysfunction has a significant impact on daily routines, social activities, and occupational activities, all of which impact quality of life. This trial will directly aid in our understanding and ability to treat bowel dysfunction related to spinal cord injuries. People living with SCI have expressed interest in external stimulation to improve fecal continence and overall bowel routine. This trial will help show if GNS is practical for people with SCI. It is low risk (such as skin irritation or constipation, though this is unlikely) with high potential benefits (such as fewer bowel accidents and faster bowel routines). If successful, a larger future study will provide even stronger evidence for genital nerve stimulation to be included in normal clinical practice. Information learned should help us understand how the anorectal manometry evaluation looks in individuals with SCI and how it relates to fecal incontinence.

Caregivers

T

he holidays are quickly approaching, evoking a vast array of emotions. Some are joyful, cheerful, merry, and exuberant. At the other end of the spectrum are sadness, grief, depression, and despair. Caregiver burnout is real, and more is added to our plates as we plan for the holidays. Regardless of our stance in life, we are all affected in one manner or another as we proceed into the holiday season. In the hustle and bustle of life, there is a place for each of us to fit in, and each caregiver, veteran, and loved one deserves to be mentally well at this time of year. Whether we choose to partake in the holiday events and activities or not, this is a great time to focus on being mentally able to do all we propose to do.

Unfortunately, not everyone can see the holidays as the most wonderful time of the year.

For some, the days are stressful and painful, with nostalgia that brings memories of the yesterdays of time gone by. Perhaps this time of year brings thoughts of a life filled with caring for others and not enough time for yourself. It may bring feelings pertaining to the isolation felt when friends of many years no longer call or attempt to check on you and your veteran. On top of caregiving, this time of year may remind you of all you have lost as you have sacrificed your life to ensure your loved ones have a quality of life worth living.

Unfortunately, above all, some are grieving the passing of a loved one. The feelings you have are valid and valued in the caregiving community. We are acquainted with these feelings and the greatest thing we can tell you is you are not alone.

You are a precious person who has stepped up to the plate, paving a path for your veteran to pursue. The journey you are embarking on is magnified by your feelings, emotions, and reasoning of how the holidays affect you. Every caregiver, veteran, and their family deserves to have peace of mind, especially at this time of year. Many organizations have become acquainted with the difficulties associated with caregiving and they seek to provide resources as needed.

There are mental wellness resources available for caregivers. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation in collaboration with Philips and Wounded Warrior Project has created a Military & Veteran Caregiver Mental Wellness Framework. It is a foundational material that has been created by caregivers for caregivers. It is a tool comprised of information that identifies, explains, and discusses dimensions of a caregiver's life that impact their mental wellness with a wealth of coping mechanisms to help caregivers navigate personal identity challenges, combat stress, deal with emotions, establish connections with other caregivers, manage time for your veteran and others, and ways to seek resources that are essential for your well-being https://hiddenheroes.org/caregivermentalwellness/.

There are many caregiver support programs that are comprised of caregivers who have experience with caregiver issues and challenges. There is no shame in seeking support. Some examples of support systems and mental health programs are 1) VA Caregiver Support Program- You may reach out to the VA facility in your community to join other caregivers who are acquainted with what you are experiencing 2) Warmline is a free and anonymous confidential telephone service staffed by experienced professionals of health disorders. They are effective and helpful and are available for anyone in the community. They are not crisis hotlines or substitutes for mental health therapy or counseling. You may contact them 24/7 at (513) 931-9276 or (419) 562-9010. 3) Give an Hour provides free and confidential mental health counseling for military veterans and their loved ones. They have licensed mental health professionals available to serve the community. my name is Levar Davenport and I am a US Army veteran. I LEVAR DAVENPORT Hello, served 8 years in the military until 2006, with tours to Kuwait, Korea, Iraq, and Afghanistan to name a few. I was paralyzed (T3) in 2009 from a motorcycle accident. I became a Buckeye PVA member around 2010 or 2011. The BPVA provides me with advocacy and information for all things spinal cord injury related.

Joining the BPVA also introduced me to other wheelchair vets as well as wheelchair sports. Participating in sports and other events with the BPVA, PVA, and National Veterans Wheelchair Games has provided me with an extended family of wheelchair vets and a feeling of comradery that I look forward to whenever we get together. Also, those interactions gave me the confidence to accept and overcome physical and mental obstacles as I was able to see other wheelchair vets living life and doing things that I didn't think was possible for me anymore. Since joining the BPVA, I have enrolled in and have graduated college with a BS in electrical engineering. I work on an air force base now, so I am still serving in some capacity. In my free time, I like to shoot pool and travel.

Attending the state and national wheelchair games as a BPVA athlete gives me another opportunity for me to accomplish both!

I’m thankful to be a part of the Buckeye PVA and for all that they do for us veterans!!

In 2019, I was admitted to the hospital for a severe neck and spinal injury at the John Cochran Veteran VA Medical Center.

The support of the diverse VA healthcare providers, support staff, family, and friends helped put me at ease, encouraging me to know I would be just fine. Dr. Kuemmel, a Cleveland VA Medical Center SCI Clinic provider, encouraged me to consider contacting the Buckeye PVA to become familiar with the available resources and opportunities to participate in valued social activities with peers. While participating in healthcare groups, I met various friends and BPVA members who shared their excitement and reinforced their encouragement for me to become an active member and explore participating in future wheelchair games. My first exposure to the wheelchair games was the 37th National Veteran Wheelchair Games held in Cincinnati, Ohio, when I worked for the Vet Center. Observing and interacting with the athletes, I was in awe of the competitiveness, fellowship, and sense of family community that shared a common belief that all are inclusive. Reflecting on that time when the “Games were in Cincinnati, I knew I would be part of a wonderful new family! Since joining the BPVA Chapter, I have met many new family friends and participated in two BPVA Wheel Chair Games and two National Veteran Wheel Chair Games. I learned new and old sports activities and competed in adaptive pickleball, boccia, badminton, nine-ball, swimming, ping pong, and tennis. I have the honor of serving as a PVA representative for Columbus, Ohio, and supporting the local Columbus VA Recreational Coordinator in outreach and increasing membership for adaptive sports and PVA athletes. Finally, I am highly grateful to Buckeye Paralyzed Veterans of America for all they do today, tomorrow, and in the future!!!

CONGRESS APPROVES TWO-TIERED FUNDING BILL This week, Congress approved a two-tiered, continuing resolution (CR) that keeps the government running into early next year. The first-tier funds the departments of Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, Energy, Veterans Affairs, and Agriculture through January 19, 2024. The second-tier funds all remaining government agencies through February 2, 2024. It does not include any unpopular spending cuts or policy provisions, which allowed it to clear both chambers in a bipartisan manner.

Meanwhile, the House is now resuming its own efforts to pass FY 2024 funding legislation. The chamber has passed four of the twelve annual appropriations bills, so they have a significant amount of work to do as well.

Significant differences in terms of overall amounts and specific allocation of funds exist between the two chambers. The House and Senate may reach agreement and pass legislation funding part of the government, but Congress will likely need to pass another short-term continuing resolution (CR) to cover the rest. The current CR runs out on November 17.

PVA SUBMITS COMMENTS ON PROPOSED RULE TO UPDATE SECTION 504 AND ACCESSIBLE MDE REQUIREMENTS PVA, in collaboration with the Consortium for Constituents with Disabilities (CCD), submitted a comment in response to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) proposed rule to update an antidiscrimination law and medical treatment access requirements for people with disabilities. The proposed rule amends a 50-year old law, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation

Act, which prohibits disability discrimination by medical facilities and providers that receive HHS-funding, like Medicare. The proposed rule included requirements for accessible medical diagnostic equipment (MDE).

PVA spearheaded the MDE comments. PVA and CCD urged HHS to adopt an enforceable standard requiring MDE to have a 17-inch low transfer height; specific requirements for providers to acquire accessible exam tables, chairs, and weight scales; and mandated staff training on the use of accessible MDE. The CCD comment, submitted November 13, was signed by over 70 national disability rights organizations.

SVAC HOLDS HEARING ON VA RESEARCH On November 1, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee (SVAC) held a hearing titled, “Foundation of Care: Examining Research at the Department of eterans Affairs.”

Representing VA on the single-panel hearing was Dr. Rachel Ramoni, Chief Research and Development Officer from the Office of Research and Development. She was joined by Dr. Patricia Hastings, Chief Consultant for Health Outcomes and Military Exposures, and Dr. Sumitra Muralidhar, Program Director for the Million Veteran Program. Matthew Kuntz, Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Montana, also testified at the hearing.

As the only non-VA witness, Mr. Kuntz offered a unique perspective working with veterans outside of the VA health care system. Key takeaways from Mr. Kuntz’s testimony were the need for VA to prioritize research concerning toxic exposures, spinal cord injuries, prosthetics, and brain health.

x On October 25, the House ended a three-week long period of legislative inactivity with the election of Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) as the chamber’s 56th Speaker.

Prior to the vote, the chamber was essentially paralyzed because existing rules prevented lawmakers from acting on legislation until a new leader was chosen. The lapse in leadership also delayed a pair of House Veteran’s Affairs Committee (HVAC) hearings looking at pending legislation.

WOMEN VETERAN TASK FORCE PUBLISHES FINAL REPORT The House Veterans’ Affairs Committee’s (HVAC) Women Veteran Task Force (WVTF) recently published its final report. Reauthorized earlier this year, the WVTF was an opportunity for various HVAC subcommittees to focus on women veteran issues within each area of jurisdiction.

The WVTF invited participants from several different veterans service organizations, VA, private sector experts, and individual veterans to a series of roundtables on various topics. The topics included women specific cancers and care, security at VA medical centers, access to disability benefits, and underemployment.

The report makes several recommendations to Congress and VA on ways it could better support women veterans. Key recommendations include updated training and guidance for regional office staff when it comes to processing benefits claims for women veterans, updating screening for women veterans who are vulnerable to rare cancers, improving interoperability of sexual harassment and assault reporting at VA facilities, and working to increase GI Bill usage by women veterans.

DAMA SUBCOMMITTEE REVIEWS PENDING LEGISLATION

The House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs (DAMA) recently held a legislative hearing to look at several pieces of pending legislation. The hearing was originally scheduled to take place on October 24, but was delayed roughly two weeks while the House worked to choose a new Speaker. Included among the 10 bills examined by the Subcommittee was H.R. 3790, the Justice for ALS Veterans Act of 2023, which would authorize payment of a higher Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) rate to surviving spouses of veterans who die from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) regardless of whether the veteran had a disability rated as totally disabling for a continuous period of at least eight years immediately preceding death. The additional rate of DIC is commonly known as the “DIC Kicker.”

The Justice for ALS Veterans Act was drafted with PVA’s help and this change is a key part of our efforts to improve VA benefits and services for ALS veterans and their survivors. The current version of the bill asks VA to study and inform Congress on other conditions with high mortality rates that deserve similar consideration from lawmakers. VA recommended incorporating a clearer definition of high mortality rate in the bill to ensure implementation would be consistent with congressional intent.

The Subcommittee also looked at H.R. 5890, the Review Every Veterans Claim Act of 2023, which seeks to limit the VA’s authority to deny a veteran’s claim solely based on the veteran’s failure to appear for a medical examination associated with the claim. Thousands of veterans’ claims for service connection, claims for increase, and for other benefits like Total Disability Individual Unemployability and Aid and Attendance have been denied solely on the basis of missing an examination. There are many legitimate reasons why a veteran may not be able to attend a scheduled exam.

We are also aware of numerous instances where VA contractors have erroneously recorded the veteran as a “no show.” PVA strongly supports passage of this legislation, which would ensure that a missed exam isn’t the only basis for denying a veteran’s claim.

NEWS OF NOTE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY SUBCOMMITTEE HOLDS PENDING LEGISLATION HEARING

On November 2, the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Economic Opportunity Subcommittee held a pending legislation hearing on several pieces of legislation and a few draft bills.

Several of the bills discussed focused on improving the transition process for separating servicemembers and increasing access to commercial drivers’ licenses. Also discussed were a few student veteran bills that would improve the VA work study program, increase the housing allowance for online learning, and reduce barriers to the Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship.

There was also a bill that seeks to reduce veteran suicide and another that would create a fourth administration within VA focused on economic opportunity issues such as education and employment.

One draft bill that caused strong reactions would move the Department of Labor’s (DOL) Veterans’ Employment and Training Service from DOL to the VA. Several Subcommittee members, VA and DOL, and veterans service organizations were staunchly opposed to the legislation.

HVAC OVERSIGHT HEARING ON VETERAN EMPLOYMENT On November 7, the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee (HVAC) held an oversight hearing titled, “Veterans Helping Veterans: The Impact of America’s Business on Veteran Employment and Opportunity.” Several business leaders testified before the Committee and shared how their companies are making veteran employment a priority. These leaders included the directors of veteran employment programs for Walmart,

Verizon, Home Depot, as well as the President of Hiring Our Heroes. Several topics arose during the hearing, such as forced arbitration clauses, gender pay gaps, advancement opportunities, and ways in which Congress can improve the employment landscape for all veterans.

Who is eligible to participate in the program?

Must be a BPVA Member in good standing for a minimum of 90 days to participate. The Committee has the option to make exceptions for extenuating circumstances.

What is the acceptable time period before the program becomes available for use?

The BPVA member must be hospitalized for a minimum of one week.

What is the acceptable distance for mileage reimbursement?

The mileage reimbursement will be given to visitors for travel to a VA hospital in the State of Ohio for the well-being of members who are hospitalized. Beginning and ending travel must be in the State of Ohio.

How much is the reimbursement?

Reimbursement will be at a rate of .20 per mile. Mileage will be determined via MapQuest based on the submission of the visitor of the beginning and ending address. Chapter will reimburse up to 2 trips per month with a $2,000 cap per year.

Reimbursement request containing the name of the member, name and address of the visitor, the date of visitation and the origin of the trip must be submitted by the 20th of the following month, with payment at the end of month. Request for reimbursement will only be valid for one calendar month following travel.

How will reimbursement be paid?

Reimbursements will be via check.

What locations are included in the program?

Reimbursement will be for Ohio VA hospitals only.

VA Emergency Care

n most instances, Veterans are eligible to receive VA authorized emergency care at an in-work facility if the VA is notified of the emergency event within 72 hrs.

Veterans do not need to check with the VA before going to an emergency department in the community or calling an ambulance and, during an emergency, veterans are encouraged to seek medical attention without delay.

To simplify and streamline this emergency care notification process, VA established a national emergency care contact center. This center allows community providers to report instances of a Veteran presenting to a community emergency department and offers simplified access to VA for care co-ordination, eligibility determination, and payment authorization information.
