Here you will find Volcan Baru, the highest point in the republic at almost 3745 meters (12,287 ft.) above sea level. It is a dormant volcano whose last major eruption occurred in 500 AD, but there is also evidence of a minor eruption in about 1550 AD.

There are many other fascinating tourist sites in this province. The thoroughbred horse farms, the flowers, trout fishing in the highlands, sports fishing in the gulf, thermal water baths, trekking and nature itself have converted it into one of the most important ecotourism destinations in the country. pequeño pueblo de Boca Chica en tierra firme, y su muelle, están a tan solo veinte minutos de la Interamericana, y es el punto de embarque para paseos y visitas hacia las islas cercanas. En la zona de Boca Chica encontrará una completa gama de alojamientos, en general hoteles pequeños, con buena atención y para todo tipo de presupuesto. La mayoría de los hoteles cuentan con sus propios muelles para embarcar y conocer las islas. La primera parte del Parque Nacional Marino y la isla grande de Boca Brava, se encuentran a tan solo 10 minutos de Boca Chica; puede llegar en una de las frecuentes lanchas manejadas cariñosamente por la gente del pueblo. A

treinta minutos empezará a encontrar las islas más lejanas, con sus playas blancas y posibilidades de “snorkel”.

Boca Chica es también punto de embarque para los charters a las Islas Secas y sus excelentes paisajes marinos, otra joya del Golfo de Chiriquí. En todo el Golfo hay muchas posibilidades de explorar playas tropicales, y en general un clima más seco y tiempo más fiable que en la costa caribeña.

El Golfo De Chiriquí es también una de las zonas más conocidas para la pesca deportiva en nuestro país, atrayendo a internacionales, “fans fijos”, que vuelven año tras año para llegar a puntos tan legendarios como Isla Montuosa o Hannibal Bank.

Durante la época entre julio y noviembre, las aguas del Golfo de Chiriquí se convierten en residencia de las ballenas jorobadas, acercándose a la costa y brindando oportunidades de excursiones para el visitante. Los hoteles de la zona ofrecen giras a sus clientes para conocer muy de cerca esto que la naturaleza nos ofrece. Al tratarse de zonas poco frecuentadas por turistas, brindan la posibilidad de un extenso y espectacular avistamiento.

Los hoteleros y negocios de la zona, que aún mantienen su encanto, comentan que hoy más gente que nunca combina algunos días de vacaciones entre las montañas de Boquete y el Golfo de Chiriquí, o se detienen un par de noches en su camino a Bocas del Toro y Boquete, desde ciudad de Panamá.

Chiriqui Gulf Occupying the area between Isla Coiba and the border with Costa Rica, the Chiriqui Gulf has always been the unknown and surprising side of the Chiriqui Province. Its marine beauty was reserved for the few who were able to reach its shores. Now, with the improvement of roads, the islands of this tropical archipelago are easily accessed by an increasing amount of privileged tourists. Today, the small town of mainland Boca Chica and its spring are just twenty minutes away via the Interamerican Highway. It is the embarkation point for walks and visits to nearby islands. The Boca Chica area

has an increasing amount of accommodations, usually small hotels with good service, which cater to a range of budgets. In general, these hotels have their own docks from which one can board and explore the islands. The Marine National Park and the large Boca Brava Island can be reached in 10 minutes using the frequent boats that are devotedly handled by local townspeople. Travel to the farthest islands, with white beaches and great snorkeling, takes no less than 30 minutes.

Boca Chica is also the embarkation point for char-

ters to the Secas Islands and excellent seascapes.

It is another Chiriqui Gulf jewel. Throughout the Gulf there are many possibilities to explore tropical beaches and enjoy a generally drier and more reliable climate than on the Caribbean Coast. The Chiriqui Gulf is also one of the most famous sport fishing areas of our country. Areas such as the legendary Hannibal Bank and Montuosa Island attract international fans who return year after year.

During the period between July and November, the Chiriqui Gulf becomes a residence for hump-

back whales. These seasonal inhabitants come very close to the coast and provide visitors an opportunity to visit them on excursion. The hotels in the area offer tours and an opportunity to closely see nature’s reward. Because the area is seldom frequented by tourists, there is the possibility for a spectacular sighting.

Hoteliers and charming local businesses say that more and more people are combining vacation days in the Boquete Mountains with a visit to the Chiriqui Gulf or are spending a couple of nights in Bocas del Toro and Boquete from Panama City.

EL AEROPUERTO INTERNACIONAL ENRIQUE MALEK POTENCIA TURISMO Y EXPORTACIONES La remodelación de la Terminal y la ampliación de la pista del Aeropuerto Internacional Enrique Malek, en la Provincia de Chiriquí, a la que El Estado Panameño destinó una inversión de 27.4 millones de dólares, son ya una realidad.

Esta terminal aérea pasa a manos de la administración del Aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen, cuyo reto será convertir al Aeropuerto de David en un gran polo de desarrollo y fortalecimiento del transporte de carga y el turismo en la provincia de Chiriquí, cumpliendo con los mismos estándares de calidad y seguridad que rigen la navegación aérea internacional.

El aeropuerto Internacional de Tocumen, basado en su experiencia y su modelo de administración exitoso, colaborará con facilitarle al viajero su desplazamiento hacia y desde Chiriquí en el menor tiempo posible, fomentar nuevos vuelos y apoyar con el desarrollo de complejos logísticos, el empleo y el turismo en la activa provincia.

Las adecuaciones que ha realizado el Gobierno Nacional le ha otorgado la categoría de aeropuerto internacional, al extender la pista de aterrizaje, lo que permite la llegada de aviones tipo 757, con capacidad de 200 pasajeros; además de aplicar tecnología de punta como el sistema FITS (Full Integrated Tactical Systems).

Las perspectivas que se tiene para el Aeropuerto Internacional Enrique Malek son las de consolidar un hub para el occidente del país. Y hacia y desde Centroamérica, se espera desarrollar su potencial como terminal de carga y vuelos privados.

El tráfico aéreo genera un gran impacto económico, creando empleos y trayendo el efecto multiplicador del turismo a la provincia de Chiriquí.

David es una de las ciudades más importantes de Panamá y también el punto de partida para visitar las atracciones de la hermosa provincia de Chiriquí.

La nueva estructura del Enrique Malek tiene un área exclusiva para atender la llegada de pasajeros que proceden de vuelos internacionales, y otra área para

Enrique Malek Airport’s new structure has an exclusive area to meet the arrival of passengers coming from international flights and a separate area for domestic flights. It also has spaces for restaurants, shops, conference rooms, and medical and security stations.

Using its vast experience and exemplary administration, Tocumen International Airport will collaborate to provide travelers with transport to and from Chiriqui, in the shortest time possible, to promote new flights; and develop complex logistics, employment and active tourism in the province. The adjustments made by the national government have granted the airport international status. These adjustments include the extension of the runway, allowing the arrival of type 757 aircrafts with a capacity of 200 passengers, in addition to applying FITS (Fully Integrated Tactical Systems) technology.

Similarly, the terminal has new equipment including scanners, X-ray systems and lighting systems for evening flights.

L

a producción de café en las tierras altas de la provincia chiricana tiene su origen a finales del siglo XIX en Boquete. Pero no fue hasta mediados del siglo XX que agricultores boqueteños, empujados por su deseo de conquistar nuevas tierras, emigraron hacia el otro lado del Volcán; y al encontrarse en un ambiente tan similar al que habían dejado atrás, deciden no aventurarse con nuevos cultivos, y producir algo que ya conocían y que estaban seguros no tendría problemas de adaptación, el café.

La producción total no alcanza las dos milésimas de la producción mundial. Pero gracias a las privilegiadas condiciones climatológicas, un manejo adecuado del cultivo y un proceso industrial minucioso, el café panameño atrae hoy en día el interés de los vinculados a la actividad sin excepción. El origen de dicho interés es que en los últimos años nuestro café ha recibido, de forma consecutiva, el galardón al mejor del mundo en los eventos de competición más renombrados.

Con el transcurrir de los años el café ha llegado a convertirse en un importante pilar de la economía agrícola de nuestra nación; pocas actividades económicas generan un efecto multiplicador tan amplio como el café. Además de la generación directa de empleos, actividades como el transporte, el comercio, la industria, la construcción, el turismo, la banca y el fisco, se benefician de la caficultura.

Unlike Colombia, its neighbor to the south, and Costa Rica and Guatemala to the north, Panama did not enter the commercial coffee market in the 19th century.

While the coffee consumed in Panama was still being imported, the bean was already playing an important role in the socioeconomic development of these neighboring countries.

It was at the end of the 19th century that coffee was first planted as a commercial crop in Boquete. However, it wasn’t until the mid20th century that Boquete’s farmers, motivated by their need for more land, emigrated to the other side of the Volcan. Upon finding an environment very similar to Boquete, they decided they would stay with coffee, a crop they were sure would thrive, rather than explore new agricultural options. They stayed with coffee because it was a product they

knew and which they were sure would have no difficulties in adapting to the area. Today, with a production that is less than 2% of the world’s coffee, and thanks to the privilege of climatologically excellent conditions, good cultivation and processing, Panama has drawn the world’s attention to its product.

Their interest was obviously awakened by the fact that Panama’s coffee has consecutively received awards as the best in the world at recognized competitions in the last several years.

Over the years, coffee has become an important pillar of the country’s economy and few business activities have generated as many secondary positive effects. In addition to creating more directly related jobs in the industry, the spin offs of coffee cultivation include increases in transportation, industry, construction, and tourism.

Para esa época Panamá, y más claramente su ciudad capital y Colón, era un mosaico de nacionalidades. Si se considera que la capital tenía apenas 20,000 habitantes en 1904, significa que en algún momento el área de la construcción del Canal estuvo habitada por una mayoría de extranjeros, debido a la creciente inmigración, primordialmente desde las Antillas.

De acuerdo con archivos de la Biblioteca Roberto F. Chiari de la ACP, los antillanos fueron el mayor grupo humano que llegó a Panamá para la construcción del Canal con más de 31,000 personas, y de ellas, unas 19,000 arribaron desde Barbados. Después siguieron los españoles, con más de 8,200 trabajadores.

Diversity as a result of the construction of the canal The construction of the Canal, under the French and Americans, emphasized the identity of Panama as a multicultural and multiethnic country. This was mainly due to the contributions of individual and national groups who settled here after helping unite the world by way of two oceans.

Panama at that time, or at least its capital and Colon, was a mosaic of nationalities. If we consider that the capital had only 20,000 inhabitants in 1904, at some point the area around the Canal´s construction had to be inhabited by a majority of foreigners, due to increased immigration, mostly from the West Indies.

The West Indians were the largest national group both in number and impact that settled here as a result of the Panama Canal construction. This is true for both the French and American periods of construction.

According to archives from the ACP Roberto F. Chiari Library, West Indians were the largest group of people who came to build the Panama Canal with more than 31,000 people, and of these, about 19,000 arrived from Barbados. The Spaniards followed with more than 8,200 workers.

l Quetzal Resplandeciente ha sido considerado como una de las aves más espectaculares del Nuevo Mundo; y era uno de los símbolos sagrados más importantes entre los Mayas y Aztecas. La palabra quetzal proviene del antiguo idioma Azteca Nahuatl y significa "cola larga de plumas brillantes".

El quetzal adulto mide 35cm, con una cola que puede llegar a tener más de 75cm de largo. Su cabeza y plumaje superior son de color verde intenso, y las inferiores, y las que están bajo la cola, son de un rojo profundo. Las hembras tienen un plumaje más sometido y carecen de la cola larga. Su fuente principal de alimento son las frutas, aunque también pueden comer insectos. Son criaturas

tímidas y pueden ser divisadas con mayor facilidad en horas de la madrugada.

The Resplendent Quetzal Pharomachrus mocinno The resplendent quetzal has been called the most spectacular bird of the New World and was one of the most sacred symbols of the Aztecs and Mayans. The word quetzal is from the ancient Aztec language Nahuatl. Translated it means "large brilliant tail feather.”

The Adult quetzal is about 14 inches (35 cm) long with tail feathers that can grow to more than 30 inches (75cm).

Their head and upper plumage are an intense and glittering green, while their lower breast, belly and under tail are usually a deep red or crimson. The females have a much more

subdued plumage and lack the long tail. They are primarily fruit eaters, although they also feed off small insects. They are shy creatures and easiest to see in the early morning.

The resplendent quetzal is found only in the cloud-forests of the Central American highlands. They are usually found at altitudes of 4,000 to 10,500 feet, in oak forests with high canopies. In Panama, they can primarily by found in the cloud forests of Chiriqui around Volcan Baru. We challenge you to explore the Chirqui highlands to catch a glimpse and personally experience this wondrous bird.

Causas Las causas de los divertículos y la diverticulitis no se conocen con precisión, pero es más común en pacientes que consumen dieta baja en fibra, y como ya se mencionó, se cree que tiene fuerte relación con el estreñimiento crónico; después de muchos años, se produce un aumento de la presión que existe dentro del intestino grueso (colon) causando los divertículos.

La diverticulosis afecta principalmente a personas mayores de 50 años.

Clasificación Enfermedad Diverticular no complicada La diverticulitis no complicada es de diagnóstico clínico (sin necesidad de estudios).

Es caracterizado por dolor en fosa iliaca izquierda, fiebre y estreñimiento; también hay síntomas como náuseas, vómitos, diarrea y dificultad al orinar. El proceso inflamatorio se limita al colon. El examen físico puede indicar fiebre, taquicardia y dolor al tocar la parte baja izquierda del abdomen cerca del pubis.

Enfermedad Diverticular complicada Se define como una enfermedad diverticular que se acompaña de estenosis (estrechez) de absceso (inflamación con pus), o una fístula, que es una conexión anormal entre órganos que requieren la rápida intervención quirúrgica para su curación.

La diverticulitis complicada se clasifica en estadios, según la clasificación de HINCHEY: ESTADIO I: Diverticulitis asociada a absceso pericólico.

ESTADIO II: Diverticulitis asociada con absceso distante (retroperitoneal o pélvico).

ESTADIO III: Diverticulitis asocida a peritonitis purulenta.

ESTADIO IV: Diverticulitis asociada a peritonitis fecal.

Sintomatología Alrededor de un 90% de los pacientes con divertículos no presentan síntomas y se diagnostican al realizar exámenes de rutina del colon o intentando conocer las causas de las molestias abdominales. Los síntomas se presentan en la enfermedad complicada incluyendo la diverticulitis y el sangrado. Los divertículos del colon son una causa común del sangrado significativo del colon. Se observan dolores espasmódicos, fiebre, escalofríos, leucositosis, hinchazón y dolor del lado izquierdo del abdomen.

Diagnóstico El médico lo examinará, y también se ordenan exámenes como hemograma completo y urinálisis; otros exámenes que pueden ayudar a diagnosticar son la tomografía axial computarizada simple o con contraste. La endoscopía y otros estudios radiológicos contrastados se realizarán a las 6-8 semanas de pasado el período agudo de inflamación.

CHIRICANOS DE CORAZÓN

Tratamiento La diverticulitis requiere de un manejo diferente; casos leves se tratan con antibióticos orales, restricciones dietéticas, aumentando la ingesta de fibras (granos, verduras, legumbres), bastante agua y ablandadores de las heces. Casos más graves requieren hospitalización, antibióticos intravenosos y restricción dietética.

La mayoría de los ataques agudos se resuelven con este manejo. La cirugía está reservada para aquellos casos con diverticulitis recurrente, complicaciones de ataques severos o cuando no hay respuesta al tratamiento médico (20% de los casos). También requieren de tratamiento quirúrgico aquellos pacientes con episodios de sangrado severo o episodios de sangrado por diverticulosis. El tratamiento quirúrgico consiste en remover el colon enfermo.

Se recomienda a los pacientes buscar atención médica en caso de que aparezcan síntomas tempranos, y así evitar complicaciones de cuadros más agudos e intensos de diverticulitis.

Diverticula (Diverticular Disease) Diverticula are an acquired disease closely related to chronic constipation disease. They are sacks, similar to small pouches, which develop in the wall of the large intestine, usually in the left and sigmoid colon, but can affect the entire colon.

Diverticulosis is the presence of these sacks, while diverticulitis is the inflammation of said sacks.

Causes: The causes of diverticula and diverticulitis are not precisely known, but they are most common in patients with a low-fiber diet, and as already mentioned, are believed to be strongly related with chronic constipation. Over a period of many years, the constipation causes an increase in the pressure existing within the large intestine (colon), causing the diverticula. Diverticulosis mainly affects people over the age of 50.

Presentation: • Uncomplicated diverticular disease Uncomplicated diverticulitis is a clinical diagnosis (frequently an incidental finding during assessment of a patient for another reason). It is characterized by pain in the left iliac fossa, fever and constipation. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and difficulty urinating. The inflammatory process is limited to the colon. Physical examination may indicate fever, tachycardia and tenderness in the left lower abdomen near the pubis. • Complicated diverticular disease It is defined as diverticular disease that is accompanied by stenosis (narrowing) of abscess (pus-filled swelling) or a fistula, which is an abnormal connection between organs, which require prompt surgical intervention.

Complicated diverticulitis is categorized in stages according to the Hinchey Classification: STAGE I: Diverticulitis associated with pericolic abscess.

STAGE II: Diverticulitis associated with distant abscess (retroperitoneal or pelvic).

STAGE III: Diverticulitis associated with purulent peritonitis.

STAGE IV: Diverticulitis associated with fecal peritonitis.

Symptoms: About 90% of patients with diverticula have no symptoms and are diagnosed by performing routine colon examinations or present nonspecific abdominal complaints.

Symptoms occur in complicated diverticular disease which include diverticulis and bleeding. Colonic diverticula are a common cause of significant bleeding from the colon. Spasmodic pains, fever, chills, leukocytosis, swelling, and pain on the left side of the abdomen are observed.

Diagnosis: The doctor will perform an examination and tests including complete blood hematology and urinalysis. Other tests that can help with diagnoses include: single or contrast computed tomography. Endoscopy and other imaging studies are undertaken 6 to 8 weeks after the acute inflammatory period.

Treatment: Diverticulitis requires different management. Mild cases are treated with oral antibiotics, dietary restrictions, increasing fiber intake (grains, vegetables, legumes), plenty of water and stool softeners. More severe cases require hospitalization, intravenous antibiotics and dietary restrictions.

Most acute cases are resolved with this treatment.

Surgery is reserved for cases of recurrent diverticulitis, complications or severe attacks or when there is no response to medical treatment (20% of cases). Surgical treatment is also required for patients with severe bleeding episodes or episodes of bleeding from diverticulosis. Surgical treatment involves removing the diseased colon.

If early symptoms appear, patients are advised to seek medical attention, and prevent complications caused by acute diverticulitis.
