¿C

uál fue el mejor carnaval panameño del siglo XX? Una pregunta que sonará absurda, dado que no se acostumbra hacer este tipo de comparaciones en Panamá. Pero según los historiadores, sí hubo un carnaval capitalino que fue considerado el mejor de todo el siglo XX. ¿A cuál nos referimos? Nada menos que al del año 1946. Luego de terminar la

Segunda Guerra Mundial en 1945, se festejó el año siguiente en Panamá el denominado “Carnaval de la Victoria”. Estas fiestas se celebraron desde el 2 hasta el 6 de marzo, y la reina fue Marcela Cucalón.

Un dato curioso es que en buena parte de la Avenida Central se colocaron réplicas de los líderes aliados que vencieron a las potencias del eje en la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

This question may sound absurd to many, since we are not accustomed to make such comparisons in Panama, but according to historians, one carnival celebration in the city stands out as the best.

To which carnival are we referring to?

No less than the one held in 1946. The

celebration held that year was named the “Carnival of Victory” in commemoration of the end of the Second World War in 1945. These celebrations were held from 2-6 March, and the queen of the event was Marcela Cucalon.

A fun fact is that many replicas of Allied leaders who defeated the Axis powers were placed along Central Avenue.

Los Arrieros Parque

Los “arrieros” se definen como una comunidad de personas que trabajan transportando productos como café, paja, corcho y trigo entre pueblos, sobre el lomo de las mulas; principalmente lo hacen caminando extensos trayectos y van vigilantes de que esas valiosas mercancías o cargas, lleguen de manera confiable y segura a su lugar de destino.

n Colombia, en el departamento del Quindío en Quimbaya, a 40 minutos de Armenia, existe un parque temático dedicado a hacerle honor y mostrar de manera divertida la cultura arriera, sus costumbres y particulares vestimentas.

El Parque Los Arrieros es un lugar tradicional y típico del paisaje cultural cafetero, que se encarga de ofrecer servicios turísticos de recreación y aprendizaje, a través de distintos escenarios.

Allí se aprecian, de manera jocosa, algunas vivencias de la comunidad, con la presentación de emblemáticos personajes como la pitonisa, el cura, el policía, la monja, el parrandero, el embolador, y el cartero, entre otros. Todos mantienen interacción con el público, los involucran en sus historias, cuentos y acontecimientos para que los visitantes disfruten de una agradable experiencia. Cada detalle tiene su historia, las casas y los personajes, los shows que se presentan son únicos durante el día, así que los visitantes generalmente hacen el trayecto en un gran grupo y no de manera dispersa.

El Parque cuenta con espacios como la Casa del Arriero, en donde se exhibe la indumentaria que usaron los primeros colonizadores de la región.

Van a encontrar una zona de comidas, donde hay una variada oferta gastronómica típica y deliciosa. Los visitantes también hallarán diversas cabañas y una capilla con decoraciones de la cultura cafetera; y además podrán divertirse con la atracción del toro mecánico, donde el visitante debe permanecer el mayor tiempo posible sobre el divertido toro sin dejarse caer.

En el Parque los Arrieros se pueden recorrer distintos senderos ecológicos, conocer el proceso artesanal de la molienda de caña y aprender sobre la historia de la arriería y la cultura cafetera de la región.

La arriería es una cultura rica en tradiciones y detalles; cuando se está en el parque lo principal es recorrer estos caminos y senderos para disfrutar de una variedad de experiencias divertidas, altamente enriquecedoras, las cuales están basadas en la filosofía vivencial y en el contacto sensorial. A través de estos senderos los turistas recorren los caminos históricos de la colonización que hicieron los arrieros, y conocen sus aportes al desarrollo del país; además se tiene contacto continuo con la naturaleza.

Este parque tiene muchas áreas verdes y una vista increíble, en sus espacios se realizan presentaciones artísticas, entre las que resaltan las de los trovadores y los espectáculos de danza folclórica.

A los visitantes generalmente se les recibe con el show de bienvenida en la Fonda del Arriero, que viene acompañado de música parrandera a partir de las 10 de las mañana; de allí en adelante se realizan los recorridos y comienza la diversión.

Al entrar al parque el visitante adquiere un “Pasaporte Arriero”, que le incluye el disfrute de 6 presentaciones artísticas y 10 actividades interactivas.

Este parque temático tiene un horario de atención al público de 9 am a 6 pm. En temporada baja abre sus puertas a todos los visitantes de miércoles a domingo, incluyendo días festivos. Es importante llevar ropa y zapatos cómodos.

LOS ARRIEROS PARK The "arrieros”, or mule drivers, in English, are defined as being a community of people who work transporting products such as coffee, straw, cork, and wheat, on the backs of mules. They accomplish this by walking extensive routes and are careful in making sure that those valuable goods, or loads, arrive at their destination in a reliable and safe way.

In Colombia, in the Quindio department in Quimbaya, 40 minutes from Armenia, there is a theme park dedicated to honor and display the mule driving culture, customs, and clothing.

The Arrieros Park is a place of traditional and typical coffee culture landscape. It is responsible for offering recreational and learning tourism services, through different scenarios.

The park offers the opportunity to see some of the community's experiences in a very humorous way, with the presentation of emblematic characters, such as the Pythoness, the priest, the policeman, the nun, the partier, the shoeshine boy, and postman, among others. They interact with the public, involve them in their stories and events, so that visitors enjoy a pleasant experience.

Every detail has its history, the houses and the characters, the shows that are presented are unique, so visitors usually make the journey in a large group and not in a scattered way.

The park has an Arriero House, where clothing used by the region’s first settlers is exhibited.

There is also a food area offering a variety of typical and delicious dishes. Visitors will also find several cabins and a chapel decorated

in the coffee culture style. Another fun attraction is the mechanical bull challenging visitors to hang on if possible.

The Arrieros Park offers different ecological trails, an opportunity to learn about mule driving history and the artisan process of sugar cane milling, and the region’s coffee culture.

Mule driving is an entire culture rich in traditions and details. The main attraction at the park is to walk these paths and enjoy a variety of highly enriching experiences which are based on the experiential philosophy and focused on sensory contact. Through these trails, tourists walk the historical colonization paths made by the muleteers and their contributions to the country’s development. This is also a great opportunity to be in nature.

The park has incredibly greenery and views. Its spaces are often used for performances highlighted by folkloric dances and troubadours.

Visitors are usually welcomed with a show at the Arriero Restaurant which is accompanied by lively music from 10 in the morning. Then, the tours and fun begin.

“Arriero Passports” are given to visitors upon arrival at the park.

With these, visitors acquire access to 6 artistic presentations and 10 interactive activities.

The park is open to the public from 9 am to 6 pm. During low season, it opens its doors to all visitors from Wednesday to Sunday, including holidays. It is important to wear comfortable clothes and shoes.

U

n edificio de dos plantas en el corazón de la Ciudad de Santiago de Veraguas experimenta una remodelación total.

Construido originalmente en 1939 por Juan Demóstenes Arosemena, el inmueble fue el elegido para convertirse en el nuevo Centro de Experiencia del Canal de Panamá.

Este es el primer proyecto en su estilo que el Canal de Panamá lleva a cabo en el interior del país, como parte de su compromiso de estrechar la conexión entre la vía interoceánica y los panameños, además de impulsar su potencial como atractivo turístico.

El nuevo local dispondrá de salas de exhibición interactivas con modernas tecnologías como simuladores, película 4D, maquetas digitales y otros atractivos para de que de una forma entretenida y dinámica, los visitantes conozcan la historia, operación, ampliación e impacto del Canal de Panamá en el comercio mundial.

La remodelación del edificio, ubicado sobre la Avenida Central y Calle Segunda, estará a cargo de la empresa Construcciones y Diseños Estévez S.A. (Codesa), que recibió en diciembre pasado la notificación de adjudicación para iniciar las obras.

“Este paso marca un importante avance para construir el primer centro de experiencia del Canal de Panamá en el interior del país, un proyecto que reafirma nuestro compromiso por seguir aumentando el sentido de pertenencia de los panameños con su Canal”, expresó el administrador Jorge Luis Quijano.

Quijano destacó que el centro será un vehículo para acercar a más panameños, principalmente a los niños y jóvenes, a los múltiples significados que tiene el Canal para el país, como su papel en la formación de la identidad nacional producto del esfuerzo de varias generaciones hasta lograr su reversión en 1999.

También relatará aspectos como el rol de la vía interoceánica en el desarrollo de Panamá como centro logístico y su importante papel como Ruta Verde, producto de su compromiso con la conversación ambiental, los recursos hídricos y la reducción de emisiones de CO2 al ser una ruta más corta para la industria marítima-.

Los contenidos del centro estarán dirigidos a públicos de todas las edades, con énfasis en generar una experiencia educativa y didáctica a los estudiantes, sumado a que la novedad de las tecnologías también generará un atractivo a los turistas nacionales y extranjeros.

Como primer paso, la empresa veragüense Codesa trabajará en la remodelación del edificio, tras ganar la licitación pública para las obras que incluyen el estudio de impacto ambiental, trabajos civiles, estructu-

rales, arquitectónico, además de los eléctricos y mecánicos.

El edificio que albergará al Centro de Experiencia del Canal fue construido en 1939 por Juan Demóstenes Arosemena con los mismos materiales utilizados para la Escuela Normal de Santiago.

La Autoridad del Canal de Panamá suscribió un convenio, firmado entre el administrador Quijano y el alcalde de la ciudad de Santiago, Edward Moley Ibarra, para permitir el uso del inmueble. El

acuerdo a 20 años establece que el Canal de Panamá ocupará el inmueble para el desarrollo del centro de experiencia y se encargará de las mejoras necesarias para su uso, además de los gastos de funcionamiento y mantenimiento.

Este nuevo Centro de Experiencia se enmarca dentro de la plataforma de espacios habilitados por el Canal de Panamá para atraer al público, como los conocidos centros de visitantes de las esclusas de Miraflores en el Pacífico y Agua Clara en el Atlántico.

THE PANAMA CANAL CLOSER TO EVERYONE The new Panama Canal Experience Center, being constructed in Santiago de Veraguas, will feature interactive exhibits, 4D movies and digital renders and models.

other attractions that entertain in a dynamic fashion. Visitors will be immersed in the history, operation, expansion, and the impact the Canal has on world trade.

A two-story building in the heart of Santiago, Veraguas is undergoing a total renovation. Originally constructed in 1939 by Juan Demostenes Arosemena, it was chosen as the location to house the new Panama Canal Experience Center.

It will also educate on the importance the Canal has in the development of Panama as a logistics center, its importance as a Green Route, and its commitment to environmental conservation, water protection, and the reduction of CO2 emissions.

This is the Panama Canal’s first major project in the interior of the country and aims to boost tourism and strengthen the commitment and connection between the canal and the Panamanian people.

The Center will be aimed at visitors of all ages, with an emphasis on delivering an educational experience through technology. It also looks to attract many local and foreign tourists to the area.

The building is located on the corner of Central Avenue and Second Street. The refurbishing of the location is being headed by Construcciones y Diseños Estévez S.A. (Codesa), which was awarded the contract last December.

The building that will house the Panama Canal Experience Center was constructed in 1939 by Juan Demosthenes Arosemena, using the same materials as the Normal School of Santiago.

“This step marks an important advance in the construction of the first Panama Canal Experience Center. This project reaffirms our commitment to continue increasing Panamanians’ sense of belonging with their Canal”, said the Panama Canal Administrator, Jorge Luis Quijano.

The Panama Canal Authority signed an agreement with the mayor of the city of Santiago, Edward Moley Ibarra, to allow the use of the property.

Quijano stressed that the center will work as a vehicle to expand Panamanian awareness, principally children and young people, to the role and importance the Canal has, and how it relates to the national identity.

The new venue will also have interactive showrooms with the latest in technology, such as simulators, 4D films, digital renders, and

This new Experience Center will join the Canal’s other wellknown public attractions such as the visitors’ centers in the Miraflores Locks (in the Pacific) and the Agua Clara Locks (in the Atlantic).

El Teatro Nacional existe en Costa Rica desde la época de la colonia, sin embargo, en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX adquirió mayor atención por parte del Estado, como parte de un grupo de acciones enmarcadas dentro de un proceso de modernización del país.

n el último tercio del siglo XIX se cristalizan los deseos de contar con un gran teatro público de amplias dimensiones y excelsa belleza. Para financiar este edificio se promulgaron tres decretos, de 1890 a 1893; los dos primeros gravaron la exportación del café, mientras que el último impuso una tasa al muellaje sobre mercancías generales importadas. Así, los cafetaleros únicamente cooperaron con cerca de un 4.5%, mientras que la totalidad de los costarricenses aportaron un 95,5% del valor total; desmitificándose de esta manera que el Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica (TNCR) fuera erigido con la contribución única de los oligarcas de la época.

La edificación estuvo a cargo de la Secretaría de Fomento, que actualmente es conocido como el Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes. La mano de obra y materiales, tanto costarricenses como europeos, convergieron para levantar y ornamentar el coliseo.

La elaboración de los planos fue responsabilidad de los ingenieros costarricenses Luis Matamoros -Ingeniero en Jefe-, Guillermo Reitz, y Nicolás Chavarría. Durante la construcción, los planos tuvieron modificaciones y adaptaciones importantes.

El Teatro Nacional, junto a nuevas edificaciones como el Palacio Nacional, el Palacio Presidencial, la Universidad de Santo Tomás, y el Colegio Superior de

Señoritas, entre otros, contribuyó a innovar el paisaje arquitectónico de San José en ese momento finisecular.

En el caso del Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica, su diseño y decoración respondió a una idealización republicana e indiscutiblemente contó con elementos de vanguardia, cuidadosamente detallados y de altísima calidad. El exterior muestra tendencias alemanas, y su estilo y composición encuentran sus formas en el palladianismo, mientras que el modelo teatral es afrancesado.

El monumento, como muy pocos en el mundo, posee una platea móvil que permite crear un extenso salón con el escenario, utilizado por décadas para bailes, cenas, galas y otros eventos.

El 19 de octubre de 1897 se inauguró el Teatro Nacional, con la puesta en escena de la ópera “Fausto”, interpretada por la Compañía Francesa Aubry, para un público “ávido de emociones”. Alrededor de las 7 el himno nacional inaugura oficialmente el Teatro; en medio de la apoteosis del monumento nacional…”

(La República, 20 de octubre, 1897).

El Teatro cuenta con visitas guiadas de martes a domingo de 9:00 a.m. a 5:00 p.m.

La entrada para extranjeros es de $10.

COSTA RICA’S NATIONAL THEATRE By: Lucía Arce Ovares

Costa Rica’s National Theatre has been around since colonial times; however, it was not until the second half of the nineteenth century that it began to get more attention from the state as they began working on modernizing the country.

The last third of the nineteenth century crystallized Costa Rica’s desire to have a large emblematic public theater. To finance this building, three decrees were promulgated from 1890 to 1893.

The first two were imposed on the export of coffee, while the latter imposed an import rate on general goods. Coffee farmers collaborated with 4.5% of the budget, while the rest of the population contributed 95.5%. This demystifies the belief that the National Theater of Costa Rica (TNCR) was constructed with the unique contribution of the oligarchs of the time.

The Secretariat of Development (now known as the Ministry of Public Works and Transport) directed its construction, and the labor and materials came mostly from Costa Rica and Europe.

Costa Rican engineers, Luis Matamoros - Engineer in Chief, Guillermo Reitz, and Nicolás Chavarría drafted the building plans. During the construction, the plans had important modifications and adaptations.

The National Theater, along with buildings such as the National Palace, the Presidential Palace, the University of Santo Tomas, the Higher School of Missions, among others, played a large role in the architectural landscape of San José of the time.

The Theater has guided tours from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Entry for foreigners is $ 10.

The National Theater of Costa Rica’s design and decoration was done with avant-garde and superb detail and quality, which paid homage to the republican era. Its exterior architecture was inspired by German trends, and its composition is borrowed form from Palladianism, while the theatre is French in origin.

This monument, like very few in the world, has a mobile platform that allows it to convert into an extensive hall for dances, dinners, galas, and other events.

“On October 19, 1897, the National Theater was inaugurated in front of an emotional audience, with a performance of the opera "Faust”, by the French Company, Aubry. At around 7PM the national anthem officially inaugurated the Theater during the apotheosis of the national monument ... "(La Republica, October 20, 1897).

The significance of the Theater is based on the ideal that a symbolical project such as this, not only guarantees entertainment and culture, but contributes to the cities modernization and defines the urban space.

Over the decades, it has become an emblem that links the nation with its historical value.

Esta madera fue talada de un árbol de los predios y reposó 6 meses antes de que fuera cortada en tablones de 2 pulgadas.

In 1946, a Swedish couple bought "Hotel Pop Wright" and named it Hotel Panamonte. This family has preserved it for three generations, and continue the same spirit of hospitality.

It is the perfect place for visitors who seek contact with nature, scenic views, birds, flowers and the relaxation that attracted this land’s first pioneers.

This boutique hotel has 17 elegant and cozy rooms, exceptionally luxurious and exquisitely decorated with locally produced teak furniture.

The master-deluxe suite is named after Ingrid Bergman, in honor of the Swedish actress who visited the hotel twice, invited by Doña Vera Elliot. The spacious and historic suite is located on the second floor of the main building. The suite boasts cigua canelo wooden floors and is elegantly furnished. It has a sophisticated marble bathroom with a bathtub and hydro massage shower. The room also has a beautiful terrace that overlooks the surrounding mountains.

The wood that covers the floor of the suite has a lot of history. They were salvaged from Chef Charlie Collins grandparents’ house after a flood in 1969.

¿Qué es la Migraña?

Ni todos los dolores de cabeza son migrañas, ni todas las migrañas cursan con dolores de cabeza. Aunque su causa es desconocida, el dolor que la produce se debe a una dilatación de las arterias situadas en el cráneo.

Una migraña es un dolor pulsátil e intenso que habitualmente afecta a un lado de la cabeza, aunque puede afectar ambos. El dolor empieza repentinamente y puede estar precedido o acompañado de síntomas visuales, neurológicos o gastrointestinales.

Aunque la migraña puede iniciarse a cualquier edad, generalmente empieza entre los 10 y 30 años de edad. A veces desaparece después de los 50, y es más frecuente en mujeres que en varones. El 50 por ciento de las personas con migraña tienen familiares que también las padecen; es de suponer que la tendencia puede ser transmitida genéticamente.

Causas La migraña es un trastorno con base genética y las causas son difíciles de identificar y diferentes en cada persona, pero las más frecuentes son: • Herencia: en algunas formas especiales de migraña ya se ha identificado el gen que la transmite, situado en el cromosoma 9.

• Edad: en la infancia la migraña se presenta por igual en niños y niñas. En la pubertad, y debido a los cambios hormonales, se dispara la incidencia de migraña en mujeres.

• Estrés y ansiedad: es necesario aprender a relajarse, buscar distracción en momentos estresantes.

• Hormonas: empeora con la ovulación y la menstruación, así como con la toma de anticonceptivos orales.

• Ingestión de alcohol y dieta: el alcohol, especialmente el vino tinto; las comidas con glutamato monosódico MSG; productos que contienen tiramina; o las carnes en conserva con nitratos.

• Falta o exceso de sueño: También puede ser un desencadenante de la migraña.

• Factores medioambientales: Los cambios de temperatura, las luces deslumbrantes o fluorescentes, las pantallas de ordenador, los fuertes olores y las elevadas altitudes.

Cronificación de la migraña Una migraña puede reaparecer de manera crónica si el paciente no toma las medidas adecuadas para contrarrestar sus efectos.

SALUD / HEALTH La cronificación puede ser provocada por la automedicación, consumo excesivo de analgésicos, falta de diagnóstico y tratamiento, sobrepeso y obesidad, trastornos respiratorios del sueño -como apnea del sueño-, depresión, estrés y ansiedad.

Síntomas No se dispone de ninguna prueba de laboratorio que sea útil para el diagnóstico de la migraña, aunque debido a su patrón específico del dolor, suele resultar fácil identificarla. En 20 por ciento de las personas, aproximadamente, se manifiestan síntomas de depresión, irritabilidad, inquietud, náuseas o falta de apetito, que aparecen entre 10 y 30 minutos antes de iniciarse el dolor de cabeza (período denominado aura o pródromo).

Un porcentaje similar de personas pierde la visión en un área específica (denominado punto ciego o escotoma), perciben luces dispersas o centelleantes, y con menos frecuencia sufren una distorsión de las imágenes. Otras personas experimentan sensaciones de hormigueo, o debilidad en un brazo o pierna. Es habitual que estos síntomas desaparezcan poco antes de iniciarse la cefalea, pero a veces se mezclan con el dolor.

Prevención Se pueden seguir recomendaciones relacionadas con algunos de los síntomas frecuentes de los pacientes que sufren migraña, de forma que las probabilidades de que aparezca sean más bajas:

• Dieta: algunos pacientes relacionan la ingesta de ciertos alimentos con un episodio de migraña. El alcohol, la comida china, los ahumados, el chocolate, los frutos secos, los cítricos o la cafeína.

Ayunar se asocia igualmente con la aparición de migraña, por lo que es importante comer varias veces a lo largo del día en horarios regulares.

• Higiene del sueño: mantener hábitos de sueño saludables, descansando las suficientes horas y con un horario constante, puede evitar un episodio de migraña.

• Nivel de hormonas: Las variaciones de estrógenos que pueden provocar, por ejemplo, los anticonceptivos, pueden empeorar los episodios de migraña.

Diagnóstico El diagnóstico de la migraña es de difícil identificación. La media de tiempo que se tarda en diagnosticar una migraña es de 28,7 meses, pero de forma general se realizan las siguientes observaciones: • Duración: puede durar de 4 a 72 horas.

• Localización: puede estar en un lado de la cabeza o ambos.

• Cualidad: el dolor es sordo o pulsátil.

• Intensidad: moderada o severa.

• Influencia de la actividad física.

• Otros síntomas: náuseas, vómitos, fotofobia, fonofobia.

Tratamientos Aunque todas las migrañas están asociadas con el dolor, difieren en su severidad y su frecuencia. Por ello es necesario crear un tratamiento a medida, que atienda las necesidades individuales de cada enfermo.

Dentro de estas terapias se encuentran las farmacológicas y las no farmacológicas, como por ejemplo: • Analgésicos: aspirinas, ibuprofeno, paracetamol o metamizol.

No presentan altos índices de eficacia en el tratamiento, por lo que sólo resultan efectivos en migrañas leves o moderadas. Se deben evitar aquellos con barbitúricos, codeína y cafeína.

• Antiinflamatorios: sólo están indicados en episodios de leve o moderada intensidad y deben estar prescritos por un profesional médico. Los antiinflamatorios con eficacia demostrada son ácido acetilsalicílico, naproxeno sódico, ibuprofeno, dexketoprofeno y diclofenaco.

• Antieméticos: se usan para crisis de migraña con náuseas y vómitos.

• Triptanes: efectivos para las migrañas de intensidad moderada o grave. Algunos tratamientos combinan varios agentes, pero su abuso puede agudizar el problema en lugar de aliviarlo.

• Betabloqueantes: para migrañas por hipertensión arterial o embarazo.

• Neuromoduladores: para migrañas con o sin aura, de epilepsia, crónicas o de sobrepeso.

• Calcioantagonistas: para migrañas con o sin aura en casos de intolerancia de betabloqueantes o topiramato.

• Antidepresivos: para migrañas por depresión o cefaleas de tensión.

• Antihipertensivos: para migrañas por hipertensión arterial o por intolerancia a betabloqueantes.

• Bótox: para migrañas crónicas; constituye un nuevo tratamiento preventivo que puede reducir a la mitad los días de migraña y cefalea, donde debe inyectarse al menos en 31 puntos de la cabeza y el cuello con una técnica que sigue la distribución de los nervios pericraneales.

• Terapias alimentarias: Existen algunos componentes de alimentos que, por otro lado, favorecen la no aparición de una migraña, como la Vitamina B12, de la que se recomienda consumir 400 miligramos diarios; el magnesio, con una toma diaria de 500 miligramos mínimo; y la Coenzima Q, en un mínimo de 150 miligramos al día.

• Preparados botánicos: Inhalación de vapores, masajes con lavanda o anís, baños de eucalipto o hierbabuena, y la aplicación de compresas de hierbabuena, jengibre e infusiones.

MIGRAINES What are Migraines?

Not all headaches are migraines, not all migraines are headaches.

Although the cause is unknown, the pain caused by migraines is due to a dilation of the arteries located in the skull.

A migraine is a throbbing and intense pain that usually affects one side of the head, although it can affect both. The pain starts abruptly and may be preceded or accompanied by visual, neurological, or gastrointestinal symptoms.

Although migraines can start at any age, they usually begin between 10 and 30 years of age. They are also more common in women than in men. Fifty percent of people with migraines have a relative who also suffers from them. They are presumed to be genetical.

Causes Migraines are a genetically-based disorder which are difficult to diagnose and different in each person, but the most frequent causes are: • Inherited: In some special cases, the hereditary chromosome for migraines has been found.

• Age: Childhood migraines can occur in boys and girls.

Hormonal changes and puberty has been found to trigger the incidence of migraines in women.

• Stress and anxiety: It is important to learn to relax and seek distraction during stressful moments.

• Hormones: Occurrence can worsen with ovulation and menstruation, as well as taking oral contraceptives.

• Ingestion of alcohol and diet: Alcohol, especially red wine; meals with MSG monosodium glutamate; products containing tyramine; or canned meats with nitrates.

• Lack or excess sleep: Are also known to trigger migraines.

• Environmental factors: Changes in temperature, dazzling lights or fluorescent lights, computer screens, strong odors, and high altitudes.

Chronic migraines A migraine may recur chronically if the patient does not take adequate measures to counteract its effects. Chronical recurrence can be caused by self-medication, excessive consumption of analgesics, lack of diagnosis and treatment, obesity, sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, depression, stress and anxiety.

Symptoms There are no useful tests to diagnose migraines, although, because of their specific pain patterns, they are often easy to identify. About 20 percent of people report symptoms of depression, irritability, restlessness, nausea, or poor 66

appetite, these usually appear about 10 to 30 minutes before the onset of the headache (called the aura or prodrome period).

A similar percentage of people lose vision in a specific area (called a blind spot or scotoma), perceive scattered or scintillating lights; less often they suffer image distortion.

Other people experience tingling sensations, weakness in an arm or leg. It is common for these symptoms to disappear shortly before the onset of the headache, but sometimes they mingle with the pain.

Prevention Recommendations related to some of the common symptoms of migraine patients can be followed so that the chances of them occurring are lower:

Diet: Some patients relate their food intake to migraine episodes. Alcohol, Chinese food, smoked foods, chocolate, nuts, citrus fruits or caffeine. Fasting is also associated with the onset of migraines, so it is important to schedule eating several times throughout the day.

Sleep: maintaining healthy sleep habits, resting enough hours and with a routine schedule, can prevent migraine episodes.

Hormone level: Estrogen variations, for example, birth control can worsen migraine episodes.

Diagnosis Migraines are difficult to diagnose. The average time it takes to diagnose a migraine is 28.7 months, but in general, the following observations are made:

• Duration: can last from 4 to 72 hours.

• Pain Location: can be on one side of the head or both.

• Quality: the pain is dull or throbbing.

• Intensity: moderate or severe.

• Influence of physical activity.

• Other symptoms: nausea, vomiting, photophobia, phonophobia.

Treatments Although all migraines are associated with pain, they differ in severity and frequency. Therefore, it is necessary to create a tailor-made treatment that meets each patient’s individual needs.

These therapies include pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies, such as:

Analgesics: aspirin, ibuprofen, paracetamol or metamizole. They do not present high rates of efficacy, so they are only effective in mild or moderate migraines.

Those with barbiturates, codeine, and caffeine should be avoided.

Anti-inflammatories: they are indicated only in episodes of mild or moderate intensity and must be prescribed by a medical professional. Antiinflammatories with proven effectiveness are acetylsalicylic acid, naproxen sodium, ibuprofen, dexketoprofen and diclofenac.

Antiemetic: used for migraine attacks with nausea and vomiting.

Triptans: effective for moderate to severe migraine headaches. Some treatments combine several agents, but their abuse can worsen the problem rather than alleviate it.

Beta-blockers: for migraines, due to high blood pressure or pregnancy.

Neuromodulators: for migraines with or without aura, epilepsy, chronic or overweight.

• Calcium antagonists: for migraines with or without aura in cases of beta-blocker or topiramate intolerance.

• Antidepressants: for migraines by depression or tension headaches.

• Antihypertensive: for migraines, due to hypertension or for intolerance to beta-blockers.

• Botox: for chronic migraines, it is a new preventive treatment that can halve migraine and headache days. It must be injected into at least 31 points of the head and neck with a technique that follows the distribution of the pericranial nerves.

• Food Therapies: There are some food components that, on the other hand, favor the non-appearance of a migraine, such as a daily dose of 400mg of Vitamin B12, a daily intake of 500 mg of magnesium, Coenzyme Q, at a minimum of 150 milligrams per day.

• Botanical preparations: vapor inhalation, massages with lavender or anise, eucalyptus or peppermint baths, the application of peppermint compresses, ginger and infusions.

-A decir verdad, no lo sé… lo que sí sé es que lo bueno no es una moda, sino que traspasa el tiempo, y la moda misma. ¿Cómo fue el Danny Rivera de los años 70 y cómo es hoy en día?

-¿Cómo era?... Antes no tenía deudas y ahora sí…y antes tenía menos libras que ahora -entre risas-.

¿Cómo se dio ese encuentro con Yomira John y cómo decidieron compartir escenario en esta oportunidad en el concierto “Siempre Amigos”?

Nuestra amistad y la idea de hacer algo juntos surgió hace varias décadas, pero la vida decidió que fuese ahora.

Ya habíamos cantado en Puerto Rico, invitada por mí al concierto “Las Caras Del Amor”, hace veinte años.

través de los años y por su larga trayectoria, Danny Rivera se ha hecho conocido como la voz de Puerto Rico.

This artist, who not only stands out as a singer but also a composer and poet, visited Panama to share the stage with Panamanian singer, Yomira John, at the Siempre Amigos Concert.

Escapes Magazine was proud to have the opportunity to talk with this legend of romantic music, where he shared parts of his life and future projects.

How was your passion for music born?

Well, it's a gift of creation, a gift from God. I live grateful for it.

Of all your songs, which is your favorite?

It’s hard to say … Perhaps it is one of my latest songs, which is “Para Echarme

a Andar”, that is a duet with Pavel Nunez, a Dominican singer-songwriter. You can find it on youtube.

Could you mention something that has influenced your singing style?

Gospel music has greatly influenced my style.

Who washe ? In that time, I wasn’t in debt, and now I am … and I had less extra weight (laughing).

How did you meet Yomira John, and how did you come to share the stage at the Siempre Amigos concert?

Our friendship, and the idea of doing something together, emerged several decades ago, but life decided that now was the time. We had already sung in Puerto Rico, at the "Las Caras Del Amor" concert, twenty years ago.

Of all your performances, are there any that stand outs?

Yes, those that sold out in Carnegie Hall in New York, in 1979, 1989, 1999 and 2010.

Are you currently working on any productions?

Yes … It’s called “Para Echarme a Andar”.

It will also be with singer-songwriter Pavel Nunez.

Destino Roatán Honduras se ha convertido en un destino visitado por aquellos viajeros que buscan recrearse en las exuberantes playas del Caribe. En sus costas también se pueden practicar divertidas actividades acuáticas como jet sky, kayak, barco banana y el snorkel. Para los más aventureros, existen algunos senderos y lugares para hacer ciclismo, canopy, cabalgata, escalada y jugar paintball.

Pero Roatán es mucho más que hoteles y actividades; también tiene para mostrar su hermosa belleza natural. Dentro de la isla existen canales entre los manglares, que unen las distintas poblaciones. En ellos se hacen divertidos paseos recorriendo las áreas llenas de vegetación. Afirman que desde el día en que se casaron soñaron con poder vivir algún día en el pueblo que vio crecer a Jannette, Volcán-Chiriquí. Si decide visitar Finca Ceriana será guiado por sus propios dueños e hijos, quienes le explicarán la historia del pueblo y del majestoso Volcán Barú. En su recorrido le sorprenderá la vista panorámica de las plantaciones de café Geisha, además de información interesante y general sobre el café y sus procesos de cultivo y cosecha.

Una vez llegue a la finca, paseará por los casi 3 kilómetros de hermosos senderos en compañía de su guía, que le hablará sobre todo lo que ve, y especialmente sobre la variedad de especies de aves que habitan el bosque.

A la mitad del camino ascenderá una leve pendiente para llegar a la torre de observación, donde le servirán un excelente café y galletitas. Aquí el tour se detiene por todo el tiempo que usted desee, de tal forma que pueda relajarse mientras admira el bosque nuboso. Cuando esté listo, su tour continuará hacia el mirador panorámico, donde podrá apreciar las tierras bajas de Chiriquí y, si lo permite el clima, el Océano Pacífico, Punta Burica, el Golfo Dulce y la península Ossa de Costa Rica.

A eso de las 12 del mediodía comenzará su descenso hacia la parte baja de la finca, donde generalmente esperan a sus visitantes con un picnic gourmet hecho con productos locales de calidad.

Bajo unos hermosos y frondosos árboles de cedro, disfrutará un almuerzo casero con una deliciosa copa de vino, y podrá relajarse admirando la vista por el tiempo que desee. Cuando haya reposado y esté listo, a unos cuantos metros encontrará el Trapiche, dónde su guía le explicará el proceso del azúcar, y probará un delicioso guarapo con limón y otros productos de la caña.

También podrá contemplar las fabulosas crías de ganado ovino.

El tour completo tiene una duración de 7 horas aproximadamente; si no hay otros visitantes durante el día, el horario puede ser variado de acuerdo a sus necesidades.

Adicionalmente ofrecen tours regulares, que incluyen todo lo anterior salvo la explicación detallada del bosque, aves y mamíferos. Estos tours tienen por lo general una duración de 2 a 4 horas.

FINCA CERIANA Discover Nature at Your Own Pace Finca Ceriana is strategically located between Chiriqui’s coast and highlands. It forms part of the province’s biological corridor and features volcanic lagoons, 10 hectares of land, 3 km of trails, and some of the most beautiful views in the region.

Its proud owners are Luigi González de la Lastra and Jannette Janson. They say that from the day they were married, they dreamed of being able to live in the town where Jannette was raised, Volcan, Chiriqui. This led them to build a place in the mountains where they could organize outdoor activities, picnics, nature trails, and animal watching. The natural corridor of this place shelters a great variety of species of flora and fauna and is an important area for migrating birds. According to studies, there are up to 203 species of birds in the area.

Visitors to Finca Ceriana will be guided by its owners who will explain the history of the town and the majestic Barú Volcano. During the tour, you can expect to be astonished by the amazing views of geisha coffee plantations and receive information on coffee cultivation and harvesting.

At the farm, a guide will lead you through the amazing 3km trail. During the hike, you will have the opportunity to see and learn about a large variety of birds that inhabit the area. At the halfway point of the hike you will reach the observation tower and will be served coffee and snacks. When you are finished with your break, your tour will continue and give you the opportunity to appreciate the amazing panoramic views of the Chiriqui lowlands, Pacific Ocean, Punta Burica, Golfo Dulce and Costa Rica.

At around noon, you will begin your descent towards the lower part of the farm. Here, you will be treated to a gourmet picnic prepared with local ingredients in an area surrounded by beautiful cedar trees and magnificent views.

When you have finished your meal, you can go nearby to Trapiche. Here, your guide will explain the process of sugar making and offer a delicious sugar cane juice called guarapo with lemon. You can also enjoy the nearby sheep farm.

This tour lasts approximately 7 hours, and the schedule can be varied according to your needs.

Feria Internacional de La Ciudad de David todos los años se convierte en escenario de una de las actividades más importantes de la región, la Feria Internacional de San José de David, que año tras año logra reunir a cientos de expositores del área industrial, comercial, artesanal, agropecuaria, folclórica y cultural del país.

Desde el 16 hasta el 26 de marzo, empresas tuvieron la oportunidad de exponer sus productos y servicios, hacer contactos, crear alianzas y generar intercambios de negocios.

sta Feria es una actividad que se ha celebrado a través de muchos años, y en esta oportunidad llegó a su versión número 62, para servir nuevamente de plataforma comercial. Durante la Feria se realizan gran variedad de actividades y presentaciones musicales, que contaron con la participación de talentos como Sandra Sandoval, Emilio Regeira, Oswaldo Ayala, Emsable Latino, Lucho de Sedas, Tavo Flores, Lesly Santamaría, Manuel de Jesús Abrego y Abdiel Núñez, así como presentación de bailes típicos, gastronomía, juegos mecánicos y shows promocionales de las distintas marcas.

El presidente de la República, Juan Carlos Varela, estuvo presente en la inauguración de la Feria; durante el acto protocolar resaltó la importancia del desarrollo de este evento que se realiza todos los años, y la gran relevancia que tiene para impulsar la economía de esta región del país.

La Feria Internacional de David es uno de los acontecimientos más importantes de Panamá en el ámbito comercial, y con el desarrollo de este tipo de eventos se da un fuerte impulso al posicionamiento de Panamá como destino turístico y de negocios.

DAVID INTERNATIONAL FAIR Every year David, Chiriqui, becomes the scene for one of Panama’s most important events, the San Jose de David International Fair. Hundreds of exhibitors from the industrial, commercial, artisanal, agricultural, folklore and cultural sectors gather for this magnificent event.

From March 16th to 26th, brands and services from Panama, and other countries, had the opportunity to interact with visitors, make contacts, create alliances, and generate business.

This year’s fair was the 62nd in its history, and on this occasion, a variety of activities and musical presentations were enjoyed. Some of the artists and activities available were Sandra Sandoval, Emilio Regeira, Oswaldo Ayala, Emsable Latino, Lucho de Sedas, Tavo Flores, Lesly Santamaría, Manuel and Abdiel Nuñez, typical dances, and amusement park rides, among others.

Escapes Magazine had a booth in the Salon Chiriqui to reinforce our brand and strengthen our position as the best tourism

magazine in the country. Air Panama was also able to highlight its local and international routes.

The Escapes Magazine stand was a showcase for some our best clients, among which are Renova Laser Clinic, promoting its health and beauty treatments, Dr. Alejandro Yuil, highlighting his medical specialties, Happy Feet, who gave exfoliation certificates and 30 % discount coupons for their services.

El Festival de Diablos y Congos tuvo sus inicios a finales del año 1999 y busca realzar las tradiciones, los valores étnicos y las raíces.

P

ersonas procedentes de distintos puntos del país se trasladan al pueblo de Portobelo para disfrutar de esta festividad, donde las calles se llenan de las más vistosas y llamativas máscaras de colores, rojas y negras. Los representantes de los Diablos interactúan con la gente y hacen sus tradicionales burlas y mofas. El lugar se llena de alegría, así como de sonidos, colores, cantos y tambores.

Esta celebración alude a la época Colonial, cuando los negros eran esclavos y buscaban liberarse de los españoles. Muchos africanos llegaron al país, pero como no hablaban el mismo idioma, una de las formas de comunicación y expresión era a través de la danza.

Esta expresión cultural es muy colorida, única e impactante, y se aprovecha para presentar al público las mejores interpretaciones de danza y canto. También llama la atención el detalle en la elaboración de los vestuarios y las vistosas máscaras, los cuales requieren de gran trabajo y destreza. Hay diferentes delegaciones representando a los Ángeles y los Diablos. Además están los Congos, otra importante figura de la celebración, que realizan bailes muy peculiares al son de los tambores; una especie de juego, danza y ritual, que no es de carácter religioso.

Esta celebración es la representación de la lucha entre el bien y el mal, y las ruinas del Fuerte San Jerónimo cada año se convierten en el escenario y testigo de esta tradición que se comparte con el resto del mundo.

Como actividad complementaria, al finalizar el festival, se organiza una feria de artesanías, venta de productos agropecuarios, comida típica afroantillana, y todo tipo de exhibiciones relacionadas con las manifestaciones afro-coloniales.

DIABLOS AND CONGOS FESTIVAL People from different parts of the country go to the town of Portobelo to enjoy this festivity, where the streets are filled with the most colorful and striking, red and black masks. The Diablos interact with visitors using their traditional mockery and taunts.

The place is filled with joy, as well as sounds, colors, songs, and drums.

This celebration alludes to Colonial times, when blacks were enslaved and sought liberation from the Spaniards. Many Africans came to this country, but since they did not speak the same language, dancing was a way that they could communicate and express themselves.

This cultural expression is very colorful, unique, and impressive, and is used to demonstrate the best interpretations of song and dance. The amount of detail in the costumes and masks is striking and requires a lot of work and dexterity to create. There are different delegations representing the Angels and the Devils. In addition, there are the Congos, another important figure of the celebration, that have a very peculiar dance performed to the sound of drums. The performance is a kind of game, ritual, and dance, which is not of religious character.

This celebration is the representation of the struggle between good and evil. The Fort San Jeronimo ruins are the stage for this yearly tradition and are the destination for sharing this event with the rest of the world.

As a complementary activity, at the end of the festival, a fair is organized to sell handicrafts, agricultural products, typical AfroAntillean food, and all kinds of exhibitions related to Afro-colonial manifestations.

YOMIRA JOHN Cantante Panameña / Panamanian singer Mi Escape favorito siempre es hacia la Provincia de Chiriquí, al pueblo de Puerto Armuelles. Allí solía vacacionar con mis familiares. Visito el lugar para desconectarme de mi trabajo, cuando necesito tiempo para recargar baterías o cuando busco inspiración como artista.

Al estar allí siento nostalgia de aquellos tiempos en familia. De adolescente solía correr con mis hermanos y primos por la hermosa playa. Luego de nuestras acostumbradas asoleadas y darnos un chapuzón en el mar, volvíamos a casa para tomar un descanso y comer un buen plato de sopa, usualmente preparado por mi abuela.

Ahora que tengo un niño de 10 años me gusta ofrecerle todas esas cosas lindas que a su edad me ofrecieron a mí.

My favorite escape is Puerto Armuelles in the Chiriqui Province. It is where I used to vacation with my family and is the perfect place to disconnect from work and recharge. It is also where I look for inspiration as an artist.

Whenever I go there, I feel nostalgic and remember my days as a teenager running around the beautiful beaches with my brothers and cousins. I also have fond memories of my grandmother’s soup after a long sunny beach day.

Now that I am the mother of a 10-year-old, I feel obligated to allow him to experience these same feelings.

n esta modalidad de trabajo se ofrece una oficina “abierta”, donde profesionales o empresas que se dedican a actividades o sectores diferentes comparten un mismo espacio para desarrollarse de forma independiente.

La idea de compartir un lugar físico puede igualmente permitir que entre ellos se genere, quizá, algún proyecto en común.

El coworking no es nuevo. El concepto tiene más de 10 años en Estados Unidos, pero su crecimiento reciente ha sido exponencial, alcanzando posicionarse también en Europa y algunos países de América Latina. Según datos del portal web www.zonacoworking.com “el número de espacios coworking en todo el mundo se duplica cada año, acercándose ya a más de 1500 sitios a nivel mundial”.

En principio, estos lugares están destinados a emprendedores y trabajadores freelance que generalmente llevan consigo su computadora portátil y sus buenas ideas, y a personas con pequeños negocios.

La mayoría de estos espacios están provistos de todo lo necesario para trabajar; área de impresión, internet, teléfonos, escritorios, salón de reuniones, aire acondicionado, comedor, servicio de limpieza, seguridad, y en algunos casos café y té gratis todo el día. Por lo general, tienen muy buenas instalaciones y se adaptan a las necesidades de trabajo de quien las requiere. Hay posibilidad de alquilar desde pequeñas oficinas privadas, hasta espacios dedicados compuestos por escritorios independientes, o sencillamente se puede trabajar desde los espacios abiertos, donde hay libertad de utilizar el que más te inspire.

El escenario usual que se puede encontrar al visitar alguno de ellos es, por ejemplo, ver a una editora redactando una nota mientras toma un café, un abogado en una videoconferencia desde su laptop con un cliente que está en otra ciudad, o el equipo de ventas de una empresa conversando de sus próximas estrategias en la sala de uso común. A veces hay caras nuevas que van y vienen, ya que estos lugares son alquilados por lapsos de tiempo variables, de un año, meses, o de unas horas al día.

Los espacios suelen tener un diseño agradable, buena iluminación y una decoración bastante particular, y en algunos casos con una excelente vista de la ciudad; todo ello otorga el sello de singularidad a cada sitio coworking. A pesar de que el ambiente es muy dinámico en las áreas compartidas, las personas mantienen un tono de voz moderado, para no incomodar al resto de los que comparten el lugar; cada quien está dedicado a su propia faena.

COWORKING A NEW TREND In recent years, the trend of working in coworking spaces has spread by leaps and bounds. But what is it?

Coworking spaces are open space offices for professionals and companies, from different sectors and backgrounds. These spaces offer people resource sharing and the opportunity to develop independently or create common projects together.

This trend was initiated over 10 years ago, in the United States, and its reach has spread globally. Per data from the web site www.zonacoworking.com, "The number of coworking spaces around the world almost doubles each year, and now have over 1,500 sites worldwide".

These spaces are targeted to small businesses and entrepreneurs, freelancers, armed with their laptops and good ideas.

Most of these places are equipped with all the necessary office amenities, such as printing areas, internet, telephones, desks, meeting rooms, air conditioning, free daily coffee and tea, break rooms, cleaning service and security. The facilities allow their members flexibility, and they usually offer private offices, dedicated desks and open communal spaces.

When visiting a coworking space it is not uncommon to see a publisher writing a story while having coffee, an attorney engaged in a video conference from his laptop, or a sales team discussing strategy. It is common to see new faces constantly, since membership to these offices vary from hours to years.

Coworking offices are usually very aesthetically pleasing and offer trendy interiors with great lighting.

Although their environment is commonly very dynamic, people are very respectful, professional and keep a moderate tone, to avoid disturbing their neighbors.

This trend has flourished in Panama, and some of the people offering these services are: Regus, Panama CoWorking Center, Coworking Pty, CascoStation and Workings, the latter with three locations in the city, located in Obarrio, Costa del Este and Punta Pacifica and two international locations in Bogota, Colombia and a location opening soon in San Jose, Costa Rica.

An added bonus to centers with multiple sites is that they allow members the opportunity to work from any of their locations. Many also offer 24/7 access, which is perfect for those who like working at their own pace.

Coworking spaces have become a practical and viable solution for those looking to work independently but require a place to serve their customers. It is also perfect for those looking to flee the distractions from working at home and for small companies who would like to escape the headache of administrative and operating expenses involved in running a small office.

This new way of working is challenging the status quo of traditional offices and quickly becoming a place that promotes the sharing of knowledge, networking and endless business opportunities.

Centro Integral de Salud Auditiva Regalar sonidos a quienes buscan una solución ante su pérdida auditiva, es por lo que trabaja la Fundación Oír es Vivir desde que inició operaciones en ciudad de Panamá en febrero de 2008.

E

l Centro Integral de Salud Auditiva y su Fundación nacen bajo la motivación de la doctora Cynthia Guy, al percatarse de que el manejo de esta discapacidad era muy difícil para personas con recursos limitados en el país. Actualmente, esta fundación es presidida por la señora Giovanna Troncoso, quien comenzó su labor hace algunos años como colaboradora y voluntaria.

Ambas tienen experiencias cercanas con familiares que han tenido condiciones auditivas, lo que las incentivó a participar activamente y ayudar cada día a más personas.

La Sra. Troncoso nos comenta que “la sordera es una incapacidad invisible para todo el mundo, hasta que te toca de cerca no te conectas con ella; y si la persona que la padece trata de comunicarse y no fue educada para aprender hablar, no habla. Se convierte en una situación triste, porque esa persona se aísla y se limita. Lo ideal es que todo niño con pérdida auditiva tenga la oportunidad de poder hablar y la posibilidad de que sus padres sean educados para saber enfrentar la situación”.

Los principales objetivos en los que se enfoca la Fundación son: • Ofrecer el tamizaje auditivo, que es el primero de los exámenes con que se detecta la pérdida auditiva.

A los niños, en los tres primeros meses de vida, se les debería realizar el examen, y de resultar positivo, entrar en tratamiento antes del año.

• Orientar y guiar a los adultos en la búsqueda de alternativas que les permitan mejorar su condición auditiva, y mantenerse activos en relaciones familiares, laborales y sociales.

• Brindar la posibilidad de una educación que les garantice ser miembros activos de la sociedad, tener una mejor calidad de vida y salir del círculo de pobreza.

Los programas de la Fundación están orientados a ayudar a los pacientes con la pérdida de este sentido, a través de dispositivos auditivos o implantes cocleares.

“Es importante tener un diagnóstico a tiempo y hacer la audiometría. Dentro de la clínica se ofrece la colocación de audífonos a aquellos niños o adultos que califican, de acuerdo a la matriz, para ser recipiente de audífonos; además se les ofrece una terapia de lenguaje”, nos afirma la Sra. Giovanna Troncoso.

ESCAPES RSE Programa Móvil Aprendo Escuchado Con este programa móvil se lleva la oportunidad de realizar exámenes de tamizaje auditivo a escuelas públicas, privadas y a comunidades rurales e indígenas a través de giras que se repiten unas 3 o 4 veces al año, con un equipo integrado por profesionales, fonoaudiólogos, otorrinos y voluntarios.

Luego se gestiona la fase 2 de la gira, que es traer a esos niños al Centro Integral de Salud Auditiva para realizarles estudios más profundos, y tener un mejor diagnóstico.

Cuando se diagnostica la pérdida auditiva, el niño puede ser ayudado con un audífono o dos, dependiendo de su caso.

La familia del paciente entra a un programa de análisis donde deben cumplir con ciertas características que lo hagan candidato para recibir un audífono.

Esas personas a las que se les asigna un audífono, realizan una donación que está muy por debajo de lo que realmente cuesta en el mercado; también se les brinda la posibilidad de hacer pagos escalonados o por cuotas, y lo ideal es que luego comience un proceso de terapias.

La Sra. Troncoso nos explica que “hay una labor enorme de parte de la familia y el entorno del niño, que tiene que aprender, estimular y motivar para hablarle a ese niño; no aceptarle señas, sino que pida las cosas de forma hablada. Es un trabajo conjunto de la familia y del terapista”.

Estadísticas: La Fundación en sus giras ha logrado atender alrededor de 150 niños en las comunidades. Activamente hay una labor de profesionales y voluntarios que suman alrededor de 50 personas.

En cuanto a exámenes, ha logrado realizar 14,900 exámenes entre adultos y niños, y sólo en 2016 se realizaron 5,100.

Datos de interés: • 60 millones de personas en el mundo tienen una pérdida auditiva incapacitante.

• La pérdida auditiva puede ser causada por factores hereditarios, infecciones, uso de medicamentos tóxicos para el oído, meningitis y exposición a ruido.

• La producción de auxiliares auditivos en la actualidad cubre sólo el 10% de la necesidad mundial.

• El oído tiene 25 mil pequeñas células encargadas de la audición.

• La causa principal de pérdida auditiva es la exposición excesiva a los ruidos.

• Los profesionales con mayor riesgo de pérdida auditiva son: bomberos, policías, trabajadores de fábricas, trabajadores de la construcción, músicos y profesionales de la industria del entretenimiento.

La colocación de audífonos es una labor más reciente para la que es necesario contar con ciertos fondos. Ya se han podido entregar 50 audífonos adaptados a niños, adolescentes y adultos.

OÍR ES VIVIR FOUNDATION COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CENTER FOR HEARING Since it began operations in Panama City in February 2008, the Oír es Vivir Foundation has been working to give sound to those who are looking for a solution to their hearing loss.

The Comprehensive Health Center for Hearing and its Foundation were born under the motivation of Dr. Cynthia Guy, understanding that managing this disability was very difficult for people with limited resources in the country. Currently, this foundation is chaired by Mrs. Giovanna Troncoso, who began her work some years ago as a collaborator and volunteer. Both have close experiences with relatives who have had hearing conditions, which encourages them to actively participate and help more people every day.

Mrs. Troncoso tells us that "deafness is an invisible disability.

Without touch, you cannot connect with the individual, and if the affected person doesn’t learn to communicate, then they have no voice. The situation is very sad because the person is isolated. Ideally, every child with hearing loss should have the opportunity to communicate and the opportunity for their parents to be educated to deal with the situation. " The main objectives that the Foundation focuses on are: • Offer auditory screening, which is the first test to detect hearing loss. Children should be tested within the first three months of life, and if results are positive, they should enter treatment before the first year.

• Guiding and orienting adults in search of alternatives.

Allowing them to improve their hearing condition and stay active in family, work and social relationships.

• Provide the possibility of an education that guarantees them the opportunity to be active members of society, to have a better quality of life, and to leave the poverty cycle.

The Foundation’s programs help patients with hearing loss through hearing aids or cochlear implants. "It is important to make a timely diagnosis, and to do the audiometry. The clinic offers to place hearing aids in those children or adults who qualify for them, and also provides language therapy", says Mrs. Giovanna Troncoso.

Aprendo Escuchando Mobil Program This mobile program offers audiological screening tests to public and private schools and rural and indigenous communities. Tours are repeated 3 to 4 times a year, with a team of professionals, speech therapists, ear, nose, and throat specialists, and volunteers.

A second phase of tours takes place to bring children to the Comprehensive Center for Auditory Health to do a more in depth study and reach a more thorough diagnosis.

When hearing loss is diagnosed, children can be administered a hearing aid, or two, depending on the case. The patient's family enters an analysis program where they must meet certain criteria that determine eligibility for a hearing aid.

Hearing aid recipients give a donation that is well below market cost and are also given the option to pay in installments or quotas. Ideally, they will also begin a therapy process.

Ms. Troncoso explains that "there is a lot of work required from families and the child’s environment, which needs to be stimulated and motivated to learn to speak. It’s important that children are encouraged to use language rather than signing.

Families and therapists have to make a big effort".

Statistics: On its tours, the Foundation manages to examine about 150 children per visited community. There around 45 to 55 active professionals and volunteers.

They have performed about 14,900 exams on adults and children. 5,100 of these were in 2016.

Hearing aids have recently become available due to donated funding. 50 hearing aids adapted to children, adolescents and adults have been delivered.

Forms are available on the Oir es Vivir Foundation website for those interested in volunteering or want to collaborate by acquiring equipment, transport or other expenses.

Este insecto, con nombre científico Fulgora laternaria, es una especie de la orden de los insectos verdaderos que habitan bosques húmedos tropicales desde México hasta Sudamérica, donde se alimenta de savia de plantas.

Mide 9 cm de largo, y se caracteriza por su cabeza de forma abombada con aspecto de maní. A pesar de su tamaño y raro aspecto no pica ni muerde, y es inofensivo para otros animales, incluyendo los humanos.

This insect, with scientific name, Fulgora laternaria, is a species in the order of the true bugs that inhabits tropical humid forests from Mexico to South America, where it feeds on plant sap.

It is 3.5 in long and is characterized by a domed, peanut-like head, and despite its size, and unusual appearance, it does not sting or bite, and it’s harmless to other animals, including humans.

FUN FACT DATO CURIOSO En la década de 1970, el reportero colombiano Henry Holguín redactó una crónica sobre este insecto, en la cual narraba que su picadura era mortal si el afectado no tenía una relación sexual antes de 24 horas. El frío de las tierras altas de Chiriquí se combate con bebidas calientes. El cacao, originario de América, fue consumido por los nativos en su dieta habitual. Hoy día es una bebida popular y asequible a toda la población, pero en Chiriquí hubo tiempos durante los cuales los núcleos poblacionales estaban muy diseminados, y las gentes del campo no tenían fácil acceso a productos que no eran de primera necesidad, por lo cual tomar chocolate les resultaba costoso. En su lugar consumían pinol, una bebida caliente a base de maíz tostado y molido, en la que el grano pasa por dos tostados, el claro y el oscuro, cada uno con distinto tiempo de tueste. Usualmente se sirve en el desayuno, en taza o en totuma. Puede servirse también como refresco.

INGREDIENTES:

• ½ taza de maíz tostado oscuro, color caramelo • ½ taza de maíz tostado claro, color caramelo claro • 2 tazas de leche • 2 tazas de agua • ½ taza de raspadura

PROCEDIMIENTO: En una paila o sartén pesada, a fuego medio alto, tueste el maíz y revuelva con frecuencia hasta lograr un tueste color caramelo claro y otro caramelo oscuro. El oscuro le tomará aproximadamente 20 minutos. Retire del fuego, deje refrescar y muela en un molino tipo corona o en un procesador de alimentos hasta pulverizar.

Combine el maíz tostado y molido con la leche. De ser necesario utilice un batidor de globo para diluir bien el maíz, sin que queden grumos.

Aparte, caliente el agua con la raspadura. Cuando se disuelva, agregue la mezcla de maíz y leche y revuelva constantemente para evitar que se formen grumos o se pegue a la olla. Cocine por 1 ó 2 minutos o hasta que la mezcla comience a espesar.

Retire del fuego y sirva el pinol bien caliente en tazas de café.

Esta bebida también se puede servir fría, a modo de refresco.

PINOL 4 a 6 porciones Hot beverages are ideal for battling the cool climate in the Chiriqui highlands.

Cacao, native to the Americas, was consumed by natives as part of their main diet. Today, it is a popular drink that is easily accessible. There were times in Chiriqui during which populations were very scattered, and rural peoples did not have easy access to products outside of their basic needs. Chocolate was considered too costly.

In place of chocolate, people consumed pinol, a hot drink made from roasted and ground corn. In this process, the grain passes through two roasts, the clear and the dark, each with different roasting times. It is usually served at breakfast, in a cup or gourd. It can also be served as a refreshment.

INGREDIENTS: • ½ cup of dark toasted corn, caramel colored • ½ cup of light toasted corn, light caramel color • 2 cups of milk • 2 cups of water • ½ cup of brown cane sugar

PROCEDURE: Toast the corn in a heavy skillet on medium high heat while stirring frequently. You should toast until half the corn is a light caramel color, and the remainder of the corn should stay in the skillet until it reaches a dark caramel color. It will take approximately 20 minutes to get a dark toast on the corn. Remove from heat, let cool, and grind in a food processor or with mortar and pistil until pulverized.

Combine the roasted and ground corn with milk. If necessary, use a balloon whisk to dilute the corn well, without leaving any lumps.

In a separate sauce pan, heat the water and brown cane sugar. When the sugar has dissolved, add the corn and milk mixture, and stir constantly to prevent lumps from forming or sticking to the pot. Cook for 1 or 2 minutes or until the mixture begins to thicken.

Remove from the heat and serve the hot pinol in coffee mugs.

This drink can also be served cold, as a refreshment.

La participación de Perales con Aldeas Infantiles SOS se originó tras una gira por América, a principios de los años 80, donde conoció la historia de uno de los programas. A su regreso a España entró en contacto con Juan Belda, Presidente de la organización en dicho país, quien le explicó la labor que se desarrolla en todo el mundo en favor de la infancia.

One of the celebrities committed to the SOS Aldeas Infantiles Children’s Charity, is Jose Luis Perales. He recently offered a concert in Panama for the benefit of this foundation.

The event was held in Atlapa, and was produced by Gaitan Bros Productions. At the event, the Spanish singer-songwriter electrified the audience with his bestknown hits.

The participation of Perales, and SOS Aldeas Infantiles, originated during his tour of America in the 1980’s. During his visit, he became familiar with the charity, and on his return to Spain, he contacted Juan Belta, president of the organization in Spain, who educated him on their worldwide efforts.

When he asked how he could help the organization, Belka told him he could compose a song to promote the SOS Aldeas Infantiles.

Para los amantes de la fotografía y aquellas personas que quieren perfeccionar este arte, en el mes de mayo tendrán la oportunidad de participar en los siguientes talleres: Iluminar El Desafío de La Fotografía con Gustavo Pomar, que busca introducir a los participantes en la importancia de la iluminación como herramienta fundamental del fotógrafo, así como distintos contenidos donde los fotógrafos descubrirán aplicaciones según sus necesidades. Aprenderán algunas técnicas y trabajarán sobre el criterio de aplicación. Se realizará en dos jornadas, con una duración de 8 horas cada una, en el Parque Natural Metropolitano los días 20 y 21 de mayo.

Así mismo, el próximo 23 de mayo se estará llevando a cabo el taller de Fotografía Gastronómica. El mismo está orientado a resaltar las técnicas de iluminación, componente fundamental y clave para enfatizar distintos platos y que sean atractivos a la vista. La comida se vende en un 90% por los ojos. El taller tiene una duración de 8 horas.

Panamá Diseña: escenario para el talento nacional / Panama Diseña: A stage for national talent Panamá Diseña es un proyecto comercial realizado con la intensión de impulsar a diseñadores panameños, y que sirve de escenario para exponer el talento de artistas, diseñadores y artesanos, dar a conocer sus diseños y confecciones de accesorios, joyería, calzado y textil.

El evento se realizó en los espacios del Hotel Central Panamá ubicado en el Casco Antiguo, desde las 8 de la mañana hasta las 4 de la tarde, y logró reunir a 30 diseñadores locales. La iniciativa se llevó a cabo con la participación de la empresa privada y con el apoyo logístico de algunas instituciones del estado.

Este proyecto, sin fines de lucro, tiene como objetivo principal buscar la comercialización y exportación del sector textil y de la moda, apoyar el sector creativo y también estimular la formación de propias caravanas de trabajo en el país.

El evento finalizó con un desfile de moda que contó con la participación de 12 diseñadores nacionales de alta costura.

Panama Diseña is a project which looks to boost exposure and serve as a stage to promote local designers, artists and craftsmen.

Para celebrar esta histórica fecha se organizó una exposición titulada “Centenario de la Cruz Roja Panameña. Orígenes: 1917”. Esta exposición incluyó antiguas fotografías de Carlos Endara Andrade, varias de ellas inéditas hasta hoy. El lente de Endara, pionero de la fotografía en Panamá, ofrece una mirada fascinante a la Cruz Roja Panameña y a sus protagonistas en los albores del siglo XX. Esta exposición dio testimonio de la admirable labor de la primera institución de asistencia humanitaria en el país, in-

cluyendo valiosas fotografías de época y copias vintage de la colección permanente de la Casa Museo Endara, así como condecoraciones y documentos históricos custodiados por el Museo, Biblioteca y Archivo Ricardo J. Alfaro.

The Red Cross Society of Panama was created in 1917 thanks to the vision, initiative and effort of its founding president, Matilde de Obarrio de Mallet. To celebrate this historic date, there is an exhibition entitled "Centennial of the Panamanian Red Cross. Origins: 1917 ".

This exhibition includes old photographs by Carlos Endara Andrade, several of them unpublished until now. The lens of Endara, a pioneer of photography in Panama, offers a
