A

A seiscientos metros sobre el nivel del mar, situado en el segundo cráter volcánico habitado más grande del mundo, encontrará el pintoresco y pequeño pueblo de El Valle de Antón. A menos de dos horas de la ciudad de Panamá, su fresco clima montañoso hace que sea un lugar ideal para salir de la ciudad y de las cálidas áreas costeras.

Se encuentra en el centro de lo que parece ser un valle, pero realmente se trata del cráter de un extinto volcán que suavemente se inclina hacia fuera y hacia arriba rodeando el “valle” 360°. Una de las formas más conocidas de su geografía es la que parece ser una princesa india durmiendo, “La India Dormida”; inspirándose en una antigua leyenda tan trágica y romántica como nunca William Shakespeare evocó en Romeo y Julieta. La fértil tierra volcánica es la base para bosques exuberantes, prolíferos jardines y flores alineadas en los caminos. La gente va a El Valle para relajarse y disfrutar del aire libre y de la naturaleza, donde puede palparla fácilmente. Es un lugar perfecto para casas de campo y excursiones de 10fin de semana.

Six hundred feet above sea level, nestled in the second largest inhabited volcanic crater in the World, you find the tiny and picturesque town of El Valle de Anton. Less then two hours from the city, it is the perfect place to escape the urban area and coastal heat.

What looks like a valley is indeed the crater of an extinct volcano that gently slopes upwards forming a 360 degree “valley.” Inspiring an ancient legend of romance and tragedy that would rival William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliette is one of the “valley’s” most outstanding geographic features, a formation that appears to be a sleeping Indian princess (“La India Dormida”). Volcanic soil nurtures lush forests, prolific gardens and flower lined lanes. People go to El Valle to relax and enjoy fresh air and Mother Nature. It is the perfect place for country homes and weekend trips.

El único espacio natural en el que se puede ver diferentes especies de animales, incluyendo avestruces y la famosa rana dorada. Al llegar se puede contar con la ayuda de guías que van explicando mientras se recorre el zoológico. El Níspero también cuenta con jardines botánicos y viveros de orquídeas.

Al visitar el Chorro podrá experimentar realmente lo que es estar dentro de un bosque húmedo tropical. Los árboles son tan altos y coposos que apenas dejan pasar la luz del sol.

Mientras recorre el sendero podrá observar diversas clases de plantas y árboles, mariposas e insectos; se respira naturaleza pura. Al final del sendero se puede observar el chorro, el cual se escucha a lo largo de todo el camino.

Aparte de recorrer el sendero, existe también la opción de hacer canopy. Esta actividad tiene un costo extra, pero vale la pena, ya que podrá ascender hasta las copas de los árboles donde observará desde otra perspectiva todo el bosque.

A visit to the Chorro is a way to truly experience the tropical rain forest. The trees are so tall and full that sunlight merely peeks through the canopy. While wandering through the pathways, you can see a wide variety of trees, plants, crawling insects and beautiful butterflies and breathe in the purest air.

At the end of the path, you finally see the Chorro, the waterfall, which you have been hearing the entire way.

Besides hiking there is the canopy tour. There is a fee for this activity, but it is really worth it. Ascending to the top of the canopy lets you see more and gives you a different perspective.

Lo más especial es poder apreciar las ranas doradas, únicas de Panamá y exclusivas de la región de El Valle. Están en peligro de extinción debido a la proliferación de un hongo que las mata. El hongo ha estado esparciéndose rápidamente, ya que los estudios anteriores indicaban que se esparcía un km por año. Hoy día se estima que se esparce 32 km por año.

El Nispero offers a unique opportunity to see an assortment of animals from ostriches to the famous “ranas doradas,” golden frogs. These little frogs are the most special animals at the zoo.

Unique to Panama and El Valle de Anton, they are now threatened with extinction by a fungus that is, sadly, spreading very quickly. The original estimates for the rate of contamination were one kilometer per year and recent studies have modified that to 32 kilometers per year. Al visitar este sitio uno se encuentra con adorables y muy estudiados niños que sirven de guías y cuentan las historias del lugar. Civilizaciones indígenas antiguas que habitaron la región de El Valle dejaron varios legados como lo es La Piedra Pintada. Se trata de una piedra gigante tallada y pintada; las ilustraciones que muestra son mapas de la región. En la ilustración se pueden ubicar el Cerro Campana, Cerro de La India Dormida, Cerro Gaital y otros símbolos y lugares significativos para la etnia en aquella época.

La gran piedra está partida por la mitad, y cuenta la leyenda que fue por la acción de un rayo que cayó sobre ella. Hay muchas otras piedras en los senderos que muestran este tipo de ilustraciones, sin embargo, esta es la más famosa por su gran tamaño.

If you stop at this site you will be met by adorable and vey knowledgeable children who work as guides and tell the stories of this interesting area. Ancient indigenous civilizations left their legacies recorded in places such as the Piedra Pintada. They carved and painted a map of the region on this enormous rock. You can make out Cerro Campana, Cerro de la India Dormida, Cerro Gaital, and other pertinent places and significant symbols of the ancients.

Legend has it that a lightening strike left the great rock split in half. There are many rocks along the trails that have similar illustrations, but because of its size, this is the most famous.

El pueblo está medio dormido durante la semana, pero se despierta en el fin de semana con el colorido mercado público. Se puede encontrar de todo, como plantas, flores frescas y vegetales; ropa de segunda mano, joyería y mercancías de los artesanos locales.

Auténticos sombreros “Panama hats”, cestas tejidas con asas de cada lado y delicados pequeños pájaros y animales hechos con fibras. La “piedra de jabón” y la “tagua” se tallan y se transforman en cualquier cosa, desde armadillos a cualquier otra figura. Tallan y pintan “bateas” de madera, o bandejas con escenas de mariposas, pájaros, flora y fauna.

Su creatividad es infinita y parecen capaces de crear arte a partir de todo lo que les rodea.

El Valle is a sleepy village during the week, but it wakes up on the weekend. At its colorful public market you can find anything and everything from plants, fresh flowers, vegetables, used clothing, jewelry and folk art, as well as the authentic “Panama hats”, baskets, and delicately woven birds and animals. Soapstone and tagua (vegetable ivory) are artistically carved into every imaginable figure from nature.

Hand hewn “bateas,” wooden trays, are painted with tropical woodland scenes including birds and butterflies, flora and fauna. Their creativity is infinite, and they make art of all that surrounds them.

En El Valle también se puede degustar de una exquisita industria gastronómica. Hay gran variedad de restaurantes que ofrecen desde comida típica e internacional hasta lo más gourmet. “La eterna primavera” es como muchos lo conocen, debido a su constante clima fresco. La temperatura varía entre los 20 – 26º C, con ligeras precipitaciones conocidas como bajareque.

Durante la estación seca se sienten más vientos y es muy soleado. De igual forma vale la pena visitar El Valle durante la estación lluviosa, ya que la naturaleza se muestra en su mayor esplendor.

It is commonly considered a place of eternal spring because of its cool climate. The temperatures range between 20 and 26 degrees centigrade (68 – 78 F) with misty rains known locally as bajareques.

During the dry season it is sunny and windy, but perhaps the best time to visit is rainy season when the splendor of nature is at its finest.

La comunidad emberá de Manené es el destino de la expedición de la fundación Albatros Media al Parque Nacional Darién. La llamada “zona roja”, por la presencia de las FARC y del narcotráfico, se ubica en las tierras ancestrales Emberá.

Luego de 8 horas subiendo el río Balsa y de conocer las huellas del más absoluto abandono estatal en los pueblos - de emberás y de afrodescendientes- a lo largo de la ruta fluvial, llegamos a la hospitalaria comunidad de Manené para escuchar de boca de los propios indígenas cuales son sus necesidades, que modelo de desarrollo quieren para sus vidas, y que opinan sobre la apertura del tapón de Darién.

“Es que Manené y los otros poblados de los bosques darienitas requieren atención inmediata, dado que la guerrilla ya ha entrado al pueblo y ha habido amenazas, incluso tiroteos”, me dice el cacique máximo a nivel nacional de los Emberá, Leo Virgilio Doviasa, que me acompaña al corazón del Darién. El cacique me cuenta que están muy preocupados por una militarización en la zona; agrega que en lugar de ésta opción, demandan que el gobierno panameño promueva algún tipo de desarrollo que les permita mejorar la calidad de vida y seguir conservando los bosques y el agua de los ríos.

The Ebera community at Manene in the Darien National Park is The Albatross Foundation’s destination. It is called a “Red Zone” as a result of the presence of the FARC and narco-traffickers who have infiltrated the ancestral ground of the Embera.

Eight hours up the river Balsa, we arrive at the hospitable community of Manene. Along the way we have seen the clear sign of a people, the Embera and the Afro descendents, who have been absolutely abandoned by the state. We have come to hear the opinions of these indigenous residents … what are their necessities, how do they envision their future, what are their developmental needs, and what do they think of the opening of the Darien gap?

Manene and the surrounding woodland villages need immediate attention now that the guerillas have infiltrated. There have been threats and actual shootings, I am told by Leo Virgilio Doviasa, the Embera Chief and representative to the national government who has accompanied me into the heart of Darien. The chief tells me that they are very worried about the militarization of the area and adds that have been insisting that the Panamanian government provide them with developmental options that would improve their quality of life and conserve the forests and the rivers.

“Es que aquí no llega nunca nadie, ningún gobierno, ni periodistas, ni las ONG; lo que más necesitamos es que se nos garanticen una seguridad territorial para estas tierras colectivas que quedaron fuera de la comarca. Pero, definitivamente, no queremos que se abra el tapón de Darién. Sería nuestra muerte. Imagínate con que facilidad se moverían los guerrilleros y los narcotraficantes si no existieran esas barreras de bosques, además que serían deforestados como ha pasado cuando se abrió la carretera a Yaviza. Eso fue una devastación”, dice el cacique máximo antes de ser recibido por Alexis Ortega, el joven jefe del pueblo.

“Here, no one comes, not the government, nor the media, nor the NGOs; what we need most is the guarantee that there is territorial security for these lands that lie outside of the reservation. But, we definitely do not want the Darien gap opened as that would be the death of us. Imagine how easily the guerillas and the narco-traffickers would move about if the forest was not a barrier. In addition to that, there would be the deforestation, as happened when they opened the road to Yavisa. That was devastating,” says Chief Dovisa shortly before he is received by Alexis Ortega, the young chief of the village.

Hacemos ingreso a Manené. Vemos aquí y allá policía militarizada, armada hasta los dientes, recelosos, inquisitivos. “Mira, solo mandan balas y tropas; lo demás, medicinas, cuadernos, alimentos, capacitación y proyectos, brillan por su ausencia. Lo más irónico es que han pasado más de 500 años y todavía no obtenemos titulación para las tierras que por derecho nos pertenecen”, dice Doviasa.

As we explore Manene, we see militarized police here and there … guarded and suspicious, they are armed to their teeth. Doviasa comments, “Look, they only send bullets and troops, the rest of it, medicine, notebooks, food, training, and projects shine in their absence.

The most ironic factor is that 500 years have passed and we still have no title to the land that, by right, belongs to us.”

“Nosotros estamos aquí desde antes que llegara Colón a descubrir América, somos frontera viva que cuida del país, por lo tanto las tierras y los bosques que desde siempre conservamos nos pertenecen”, me dice Manuel Ortega, un enérgico Emberá de Manené que se hace llamar “abogado defensor de la naturaleza”.

“We have been here since before Columbus discovered America. We are the living front line of protection that takes care of the country, the land and forests that we have always cared for are ours,” I am told

by Manuel Ortega an energetic Embera from Manene who is called “Nature’s defense attorney.”

Y sus palabras no podrían ser más certeras. “No podemos permitir que se tumben los bosques del Darién por una carretera que sería nuestra perdición y la del país; porque además de la mala gente vendría la fiebra aftosa y enfermedades”. Ortega no se equivoca, de acuerdo a la oficina regional de UNICEF, enfermedades como malaria, fiebre amarilla, y otras epidemias podrían incrementarse de abrirse selvas como la del Darién, ocasionando pérdidas económicas cuantiosas para el país.

“Y que sería de nuestros árboles, que hoy no abundan y son tan necesitados para el mundo entero por el calentamiento global. O acaso no son valiosísimos, no son pulmones?; si hasta los niños ya saben que los presidentes se están reuniendo para decidir sobre el cambio climático, para ponerse de acuerdo sobre cuanto pagar por mantenerlos en pié. Nosotros deberíamos recibir ese dinero, no los gobiernos que no hacen nada y se llenan los bolsillos a nuestra costa. Es nuestra gran oportunidad para salir de la miseria!” exclama Ortega.

Durante mi visita de cuatro días, en Manené, muchos son los indígenas que se acercan a hablarme, confirmando el sentir de la dirigencia. Las mujeres, sobre todo, exigen mercados para sus bellísimas artesanías; los hombres anhelan proyectos agropecuarios que les permitan alimentos de calidad y oportunidades para comercializar sus excedentes.

And his words can not be truer. “We cannot permit them to destroy a forest that will not only be our perdition, but that of the country as well. Not only will the bad people come, but so will aftosa (foot and mouth disease), fever and sicknesses.” Ortega is not out of order as the regional offices of UNICEF agree. Maladies like Malaria and Yellow Fever, along with other epidemics, could arise as a result of opening a jungle like the Darien, causing enormous economic consequences.

“And … what will happen to our trees? There are few today, and they are so important to the entire world, they guard against global warming … or maybe they are not important ...? Are they no longer valuable; are they not the world’s lungs … ? Even children know about the presidential meetings to resolve the issue of climate change and its relative costs. We should receive the money instead of the governments that do nothing but line their own pockets at our expense, an opportunity for us to climb out of our misery,” exclaims Ortega.

During my four days at Manene, many come to speak to me and confirm their feelings about the direction things are taking. The women want, above all, markets for their beautiful folk art. The men seek agricultural opportunities, projects for quality food production and access to commercial markets for their surpluses.

Sin embargo, sumidos en el más cruel olvido estatal, el pueblo resiste y se niega a entregar los bosques inexpugnables del Darién; la muy necesaria barrera de árboles entre ambos continentes.

Junto a la orilla, el pueblo Emberá se reúne para darnos un hasta pronto. Alexis Ortega, el joven jefe, también se despide.“No se olvide de nosotros, trate de llamar la atención de las autoridades en la capital; porque no tenemos ninguna esperanza para una vida digna para nuestros niños, mucho menos, casi nada, para festejar ésta navidad”, me dice. Y su voz corresponde al clamor de un pueblo abandonado a su propia suerte.

Without a doubt they have suffered cruelly from state neglect but, as a group, they resist and refuse to hand over their impregnable Darien forests; the stalwart barrier of trees standing between two continents.

At the river’s edge, the Embera community comes to bid us farewell, calling out “see you soon.” Alexis Ortega is also there to say good bye as he enjoins, “do not forget us, please try to get the attention of the authorities in the capital because we have no hope for a life of dignity for our children, not to mention nothing to celebrate for this Christmas,” his voice becoming one with the clamor of his people left to fend for themselves.

Por primera vez la República de Panamá cuenta con una red de emprendedores que desarrollan el Turismo Rural en comunidades del Golfo de Chiriquí, se trata de una nueva oferta turística, que trabaja bajo la marca “Aventuras Rurales del Golfo” (ARUG), “Aventuras únicas para gente real”, un grupo de microempresarios capacitados por Fundación MarViva e impulsados por la Asociación ARTURIS Coiba, aliado estratégico que administrará la marca.

En “Aventuras Rurales del Golfo” participan más de 40 microempresarios, entre los que se encuentran 10 proyectos que también forman parte del sub programa de Alternativas Productivas que ejecuta MarViva. Con este programa MarViva impulsa el desarrollo comunitario en las áreas de Malena, Montijo, Santa Catalina hasta Puerto Remedios, lugares donde se fortalecieron las capacidades emprendedoras de los habitantes de estas comunidades ubicadas en zonas costeras.

For the first time in Panama, there is an enterprising network working on rural tourism. “Aventuras Rurales del Golfo” and “Aventuras Unicas Para Gente Real” include a group of small businesses in the Chiriqui Gulf communities trained by the MarViva Foundaton to develop new options in tourism. They are strategically allied with, and directed by, “La Asociacion ARTURIS Coiba.”

“Aventuras Rurales del Golfo” is comprised of 40 small businesses working on 10 projects, and also forms part of a sub program, “Alternativas Productivas” run by MarViva in order to stimulate community development in areas from Malena, Montijo, and Santa Catalina, to Puerto Remedios, and fortify the enterprising skills of the coastal communities.

El trato amable de su gente, conjugado con los atractivos turísticos que ofrecen hacen de la comunidad de Malena, ubicada en la Costa Pacífica del Golfo de Montijo, un sitio especial y diferente en el que impera la conservación y son evidentes las prácticas amigables con el ambiente. Allí encontramos a Raquel, Ana, Florentina, Samuel y a Miguel, quienes forman parte del grupo de emprendedores que Fundación MarViva capacita en esta zona, a través del Programa Alternativas Productivas que dirige Vicente Del Cid. Por ejemplo, Ana ofrece hospedaje a los visitantes en su hostal Iguana Verde, mientras que Florentina, que se ubica frente al hostal tiene un restaurante (Tortugas) donde se ofrecen diversos y exquisitos platillos. La red no termina allí.

Raquel, Samuel y Miguel se encargan de ofrecerles entretenimiento a los visitantes.

Por su parte, Raquel ofrece paseos a caballo hasta caídas de agua y en la playa, mientras que Samuel y Miguel realizan recorridos en lancha en la costa de Playa Reina o Playa Torio, atractivos turísticos que hacen de Malena un paraíso donde impera la tranquilidad. Incluso, Samuel y Miguel llegan más allá y ofrecen viajes hasta las islas Cébaco y Coiba.

The friendly demeanor of its people, combined with its attractive tourist locations, makes Malena, located on the Pacific coast of the Golfo de Montijo, special and distinctive. The fact that this community practices good conservation and is eco- friendly enhances its uniqueness. Raquel, Ana, Florentina and Samuel are all residents and entrepreneurs that MarViva trained in the area using the “Alternativas Productivas” program directed by Vicente Del Cid. For example, Ana offers visitor lodging at her hostal, “Iguana Verde,” while across from the hotel one finds Tortugas, a restaurant where Florentina serves a diverse menu of delicious dishes. The network does not end there; Raquel, Samuel, and Miquel are in charge of entertainment.

While Raquel offers horseback riding to waterfalls and beaches, Samuel and Miquel operate boat tours along the coastal beaches of Playa Reina and Playa Toro, attractive tourist spots that make Malena a paradise where peace and tranquility prevail. Samuel and Miquel extend themselves even further by offering trips to Coiba and Cebaco.

Efraín Camarena ha contagiado a sus hermanos con las iniciativas que emprende al aprovechar el desarrollo de la industria sin chimenea en Santa Catalina. Hoy frente al mar levanta seis cabañas con capacidad para 25 personas y que conforman el Hostal Las Palmeras. Mientras, en el puerto hay una lancha de fibra de vidrio, con dos motores, techo y asientos individuales para 11 pasajeros esperando para acoger a turistas nacionales y extranjeros a su llegada. Muy pronto emprenderán otro negocio que complementará los existentes, ya que construyen en la zona un nuevo restaurante; éste se especializará en mariscos.

En Santa Catalina también encontramos a Oriel Ábrego, un joven microempresario que se dedica al turismo y ofrece paseos en una lancha con capacidad para 12 personas y que tiene como destinos las islas de Cébaco, Santa Catalina y Gobernadora, entre otros paraísos naturales que imperan en la zona. Y es que Oriel, que hace más de 8 años dejó a un lado las redes, aprovecha al máximo cada conocimiento adquirido durante los seminarios, charlas y capacitaciones que MarViva ha dictado en esta zona.

Efrain Camarena has infected his brothers with the bug that has allowed him to establish and develop a non-polluting industry in Santa Catalina where Hostal Palmeras, with six cabañas facing the ocean, can accommodate 25 guests. At the port, they have a covered, 11-passenger, dual motor launch waiting to pick up their visitors. Their near future plans include establishing a restaurant specializing in seafood.

Oriel Abrego, also of Santa Catalina and a small business owner with two years experience, offers tours in his 12-passenger boat around Santa Catalina and to destinations like Cebaco Island, Gobernadora, and other paradisiacal sites in the area. Oriel set his fishing nets aside eight years ago and has taken every opportunity to maximize and utilize all that he has learned during the seminars, conferences, and training offered

by MarViva.

La comunidad del Pilón, en el Golfo de Montijo, en la provincia de Veraguas, tiene un gran tesoro: En casi 20 hectáreas se encuentra el “Sendero Jujuná”, un espacio natural en el que se destaca la presencia de cinco de las siete especies conocidas de manglares (piña, blanco, negro, salado y caballero).

El grupo Avicennia Nítida, (nombre científico del mangle negro o salado), se ha convertido en el guardián del Sendero del Jujuná. Este grupo lo conforman José Alonso Herrera y Rómulo Pineda, quienes son pobladores de la región y conocen cada centímetro del sendero.

Alonso y Rómulo han encontrado la fórmula para impulsar el manglar como un nuevo destino eco-turístico dentro de la provincia de Veraguas. Así, aunque el primero es agricultor y el segundo es ebanista, a la hora de hablar de manglares también lo hacen como los expertos, ya que no han escatimado esfuerzos por aprender y documentarse con los mejores para dictar con propiedad las charlas académicas y realizar los recorridos en el Sendero del Jujuná.

En Montijo también encontramos a un experto en el mar, se llama Juan Serrano, tiene 40 años, es un pescador con más de dos años de experiencia y confiesa que “hoy fuera rico y la historia sería otra” si hace 10 años hubiera recibido las capacitaciones del programa de emprendedores del que forma parte y que ejecuta la Fundación MarViva. Él ofrece transporte marítimo en una embarcación que él mismo construyó con lo que queda de madera en la isla que le vio nacer (Cébaco), y a la que bautizó como la “Emily Lineth” en honor a su hija menor. Serrano zarpa con entusiasmo desde el puerto El Bongo o desde puerto Mutis y ofrece sus servicios a quienes requieren una embarcación grande, segura y confiable, ya que el bote artesanal tiene capacidad para 45 personas.

Pero eso no es todo, si visita la Comunidad de Montijo no puede dejar de conocer a Edilsa Marín y su esposo Carmelo, ellos forman una pareja de emprendedores que no se rinde y ven en los obstáculos oportunidades.

Al elegir su propuesta de negocio a desarrollar apostaron a montar una empresa que ofreciera excursiones turísticas, sin embargo, el sueño tuvo que esperar y ahora ofrecen entretenimiento para grandes y chicos. Así construyeron un anexo en su hogar, lo adecuaron con las necesidades básicas, compraron televisores y video juegos y hoy se han convertido en la alternativa para el entretenimiento de grandes y chicos que antes viajaban desde Montijo hasta Santiago para jugar con las maquinitas.

The community at Pilon, on the Golfo de Montijo in Veraguas, has a great treasure in the Sendero de Jujuna (The Jujuna Trail). Winding through 20 hectares, the trail has five of the seven species that flourish in mangroves.

The Avecennia Nitida Group (Avecennia Nitida is the scientific name of the black and salt varieties of mangrove) has become the guardian of the trail. The group is made up of Jose Alonso Herrera and Romulo Pineda, residents of the district who are familiar with every inch of the trail.

Alonso and Romulo have found a way to promote the trail as a new tourist destination in Veraguas. In spite of the fact that the Alonso is in agriculture and Romulo is a wood worker, they are experts when it comes to speaking about the mangrove. They seize every opportunity to learn and better document all they can in order to give educated lectures and tours of The Sendero de Jujuna.

Juan Serrano, 40, is a fisherman with two years experience as Montijo’s ocean expert and part of the group of entrepreneurs established by MarViva. He confesses that if he had received MarViva’s enterprise training ten years ago he would now be a wealthy man with a very different life story. Juan built his 45-passenger boat himself with wood from his native island, Cebaco, and baptized it Emily Lineth after his youngest daughter. He runs a maritime transport service that offers safe and trustworthy transportation for large shipments to and from the ports of El Bongo and Mutis.

Montijo’s story does not end with Juan; if you visit, you must meet Carmelo and Edilsa Marin, a couple that never gives up, always finding opportunity in adversity. When they wrote their business plan to establish a tour operating business, their dream had to be temporarily set aside. Instead, they built a suitable annex on their house, outfitted it with televisions and video games, offering entertainment for all ages.

En términos generales no existe un origen único del imponente traje nacional de Panamá. Un testimonio de la historia del Istmo, que se remonta a la época colonial, asegura que la cuna de la Pollera está entrelazada con el pueblo panameño y con respecto a esto, la posiciona dándole un homenaje universal. Por definición, “Pollera” significa una larga falda de pliegues, sin embargo, La Pollera es mucho más que eso.

Sus orígenes se basan en un sinnúmero de teorías no documentadas que provienen desde los prominentes salones de la aristocracia europea hasta las más humildes raíces de los primeros esclavos del istmo. Si se pudiera aclarar y documentar su historia, posiblemente incluiría todo esto en conjunto. El primer registro que hace referencia a “La Pollera” fue en el Diario de Madrid en 1815, el cual se refería a una celebración realizada en Panamá conmemorando la restauración de Fernando II al trono español y en el que describe a 30 mujeres vestidas con pollera.

Las primeras mujeres europeas en llegar a Panamá vestían trajes que iban de acuerdo a su status social. Obviamente, aquellas de mayor opulencia preferían los estilos propios de la corte los cuales con frecuencia eran trajes voluminosos y lujosos de denso terciopelo y diferentes sedas. A medida que disminuía la riqueza, así mismo disminuía la suntuosidad de los materiales de los cuales los trajes estaban hechos. Uno de los trajes que estaban representados por las mujeres nativas de una provincia de España se puede apreciar hoy en el Museo del Pueblo en Córdoba, España; su similitud con “la pollera” es claramente notable.

It is generally accepted that there is no singular beginning for the alluring national dress of Panama. A testimony to the history of the isthmus dating back to colonial times, La Pollera’s ancestry is as intertwined as that of the Panamanian people and therein lays its universal reverence. Pollera, by definition, means a long gathered full skirt. La Pollera is much more than that.

Its origins are based on many largely undocumented theories that run from the loftiest provenience of 16th century aristocratic European salons to the lowliest roots in early isthmian slaves. If you could unravel and document its history, it would likely include it all. The first recorded reference to “La Pollera” was in the Diario de Madrid in 1815. The article refers to a celebration held in Panama commemorating Fernando II’s restoration to the Spanish throne which includes a description of thirty women dressed in “polleras.”

The first European women to arrive in Panama would have worn dresses that were equal to their social status. Those of higher affluence obviously preferred the fashions of the nobility which were often voluminous and luxurious court dresses of heavy velvets and silks. As affluence decreased so did the amount of and costliness of the materials the dresses were made of. These were usually representative of the woman’s native province in Spain. One of these dresses can be seen today in the Museo del Pueblo in Cordoba, Spain, and the similarities to “La Pollera” are clearly noticeable.

El concepto de una contribución de los esclavos es también comprensible, primero las mujeres de la nobleza aristocrática vestían trajes muy pesados los cuales seguramente sucumbieron ante el calor del trópico.

Los atuendos de los esclavos se determinaban por su condición social así como también por su herencia Africana, los cuales expresaban la naturaleza, sus colores vivos eran una manera de alegrar su deprimente condición y sus telas eran más livianas y mas apropiadas al clima.

La evolución de “La Pollera” probablemente incluye una mezcla de origen étnico y del clima así como de la inspiración de 500 años de historia; el resultado: un traje o atuendo hecho a mano de lino blanco y de espumilla, cuidadosamente cosido y elaborado con matices de colores y diseños que representan la flora y la fauna de Panamá. Los deseos de las mujeres panameñas de todos los estratos sociales se ven mezclados por la emoción y el orgullo de poseer y vestir su hermosa y única pollera panameña.

Las polleras son elaboradas y vestidas en cada una de las provincias.

Cada provincia tiene variaciones muy sutiles mientras que las de las provincias de Herrera y Los Santos son consideradas las provincias “guardianas” de La Pollera.

En Las Tablas, una ciudad de Los Santos, y pueblos aledaños se pueden ver las mujeres sentadas en los porches cosiendo y tejiendo delicadamente polleras con encajes hechos a mano y soñando con ganar la codiciada medalla “Margarita Lozano”, otorgada en julio durante el Mes Nacional de La Pollera a la pollera mas bella.

Estas mujeres tienen antiguas costumbres, como las de coser solamente a luz del sol y con misteriosas medidas tales como varas, jemes, anchos y cuartos.

The concept of a slave contribution is also very understandable. First, gentrified ladies in heavy dresses would surely have succumbed to the heat of the tropics. The slave’s dress was determined by social circumstance as well as their African heritage. They were drawn to nature and her colors as a way to brighten their otherwise dismal condition, and the fabrics available to them were light and much more appropriate for the climate.

The evolution of “la Pollera” probably includes them all; that is, the assortment of ethnic origin and the weather, as well as the simple inspiration of 500 years of history. The result … a handmade dress of white linen or voile painstakingly needle worked in colorful hues and designs that represent the flora and fauna of Panama. Panamanian women of all social strata are stirred by the thrill and pride of owning and wearing their beautiful, uniquely Panamanian, Pollera.

Polleras are made and worn in every province. Each province has its slight variations while the provinces of Herrera and Los Santos are generally considered the guardians of “la Pollera.”

In Las Tablas, a town in Los Santos, and in the surrounding villages, you can see women sitting on their front porches delicately stitching polleras, weaving mundillo ( handmade lace), and dreaming of winning the coveted Margarita Lozano medal awarded to the most beautiful Pollera every July during the national month of the Pollera.

They have age old customs such as only stitching by the light of the sun, and mysterious measurements such as varas, jemes, anchos and cuartos. It takes approximately one year, 12 yards of fabric and 54 yards of assorted laces to create a Pollera. The average cost, depending on the work, is between $2,000 and $3,000 before adding the expensive jewelry, similarly worked petticoats, tembleques, shawls, shoes, wool, and ribbons. There are, of course, less costly, simpler, yet still beautiful polleras that do not compete for the prize.

Se toma aproximadamente un año, 12 yardas de tela y 54 yardas de encajes variados para elaborar una pollera. El costo aproximado dependiendo del trabajo oscila entre los dos mil y tres mil dólares sin haberle agregado la costosa joyería. Igualmente son trabajadas las enaguas, los tembleques, los pañolones, los zapatos y los lazos.

Hay polleras menos costosas y más simples pero igual de bellas, las cuales no concursan por el premio.

Hay 3 categorías en el concurso: la Pollera de Gala, las Polleras de Gala Regionales y las Polleras Montunas. La Pollera de Gala es una pollera blanca elaborada con un exquisito y brillante bordado en punto de cruz o cosida con una técnica llamada zurcida, la cual es una sobre puntada larga y una aplicación sobre la tela llamada talco; la aplicación común o talco en sombra es una aplicación al inverso. Las versiones de aplicación y de zurcida también son trabajadas con hilos entretejidos haciendo una labor de calado.

La Pollera Montuna es más simple; la falda es hecha de tela estampada como la tela de algodón blanca. La blusa es muy similar y bordada densamente, pero solamente tiene un volante fruncido en lugar de dos. La Pollera Montuna es usada con menos piezas de joyería y con menos tembleques; con frecuencia es usada con un sombrero o flores naturales. La joyería es una parte bastante amplia del traje que comúnmente se pasa de generación en generación. Hay al menos cuatro cadenas de oro, corpiños, brazaletes, hebillas de zapatos, aretes, adornos de la cabeza y peinetas doradas. There are three catagories in the competition: La Pollera de Gala, Regional Polleras de Gala, and Polleras de montuna. The Pollera de Gala is the white pollera, either richly and colorfully embroidered; cross-stitched or stitched in a technique known as zurcida, a long overhand stitch; appliqué, known as talco; regular appliqué or talco en sombra, a white on white reverse appliqué. The appliquéd and zurcida versions are also worked with drawn thread techniques, caladas.

The Pollera montuna is simpler. The skirt is made of a stamped print, such as calico. The blouse is similar and also heavily embroidered but it has one ruffle instead of two.

The Pollera montuna is worn with less jewelry and fewer tembleques.

It is often worn with a hat or natural flowers. The jewelry is a large part of the dress, and it is commonly passed on and added to from one generation to another. There are at least four heavy gold chains, waist pieces, bracelets, shoe buckles, earrings, headache plaques, and golden hair combs. There is a required hairstyle that is finished off with tembleques, hair pins made of silver or gold thread with pearls and/or fish scales. They are made with delicate springs to dance and tremble like flowers in a breeze. Representing flowers, birds or bugs, usually butterflies, they are always made and used in pairs.

Se toma al menos 4 horas y mucha ayuda para poder vestir apropiadamente la pollera. La calificación de la pollera empieza con un valor intrínseco, de un criterio aceptado. Los diseños deben representar la naturaleza; deben ser originales y de proporciones adecuadas; los colores, los matices y los detalles del diseño son muy importantes.

El diseño debe ser interminable y no debe haber cortes en el contorno del patrón. Las costuras tienen que estar perfectas tanto en la parte de adelante como en la parte de atrás. Debe haber integración entre la acentuación de los colores de los lazos, borlas, enaguas y zapatos. Las peinetas y los tembleques deben estar bien situados en el cabello, y las joyas deben ser apropiadas a la mujer que las viste. Ella y su traje debe combinar conjuntamente con una gracia mágica y su apariencia final debe ser deslumbrante.

El gran premio del concurso es la medalla “Margarita Lozano” y una pieza de joyería para la pollera. Todas las categorías tienen premios en joyas pero solamente la Pollera de Gala es apta para llevarse el gran premio. Es un honor llegar a ser reina del carnaval, pero es un honor mucho mayor ser coronada Reina de la Pollera en el Festival de La Pollera en Julio.

It takes at least four hours and a lot of help to properly dress in a Pollera. The judging of a Pollera starts with an intrinsic value, the accepted criterion by which all Polleras are judged. Designs have to represent nature, they must be original and have the proper proportions; colors, shadings, and intricacy of the pattern are very important, and the design has to be endless.

There can be no breaks in the pattern all the way around. The stitching has to be perfect on both the front and back sides. There is the integrity, the accented colors of ribbons, pom poms, pettticoats and shoes, the hair, the placement of the hair combs and tembleques, the proper jewelry and lastly, the dressed woman. She and her dress must meld together and move with magical grace, and the complete picture must be breathtaking.

The grand prize for the competition is the Margarita Lozano medal and a jewelry piece for the Pollera. All the categories have jewelry prizes, and only a Pollera de gala is eligible for the grand prize. It is an honor to become Carnival queen, but the greatest honor of all is to be crowned queen of the Pollera festival in July.

After almost 24 years, Narciso Bastidas has a clean conscience.

Nature has given him a new perspective on life. Coiba has cured him.

Oriundo de la comunidad de Sasardí Mulatupu en Kuna Yala, Mali nos cuenta su historia, cómo fue vivir en un paraíso pero despojado de todo y cómo la vida le jugó como un búmeran, tras regresar y amar el lugar donde una vez estuvo condenado.

A native of Sasardi Mulatupo in Kuna Yala, Mali shares his story of how he came to live in paradise alone, stripped of everything.

He tells how, like a boomerang, life came back and showed him how to love the very place to which he had been condemned.

Tras un incidente en donde lo declararon cómplice de homicidio, Mali, como mejor lo conocen, estuvo preso en el Centro Penitenciario Coiba de aquel entonces. Hoy día sigue en Coiba, pero esta vez como un fiel protector del parque.

He has been on Coiba ever since he was declared guilty as an accomplice in a homicide. He was then sentenced to El Centro Penitenciario Coiba, (The Central Penitentiary at Coiba) and now he lives there as a faithful protector of the park.

¿Cuánto tiempo estuviste en prisión?

Mi caso fue en diciembre de 1986. Primero llegué a la cárcel modelo en la que estuve casi un año. Y después quería saber por qué la gente tenía miedo de ir a Coiba. También lo hice con la intención de buscar mi libertad y de escapar en Coiba, ya que lo veía más fácil y posible una vez estuviera allá.

El tiempo total que estuve preso fueron 13 años con 8 meses. Casi 12 años en el penal de Coiba. La sentencia era de 17 años. Tenía 22 años en ese entonces.

¿Por qué te rebajaron la pena?

Pienso que rebajaron mi sentencia porque cuando la isla de Coiba fue declarada parque nacional el 17 de diciembre de 1991, empecé a trabajar con los investigadores que visitaban la isla. Ellos querían que alguien que siempre estuviera allí los llevara a conocer la isla, y como me había ganado la confianza, la policía me recomendó.

Ahí empezó una nueva etapa de mi vida en Coiba, desde 1993 hasta 1998 cuando estuve acompañando la mayoría del tiempo a los investigadores. ¿Cómo era vivir en Coiba como prisionero?

Llegué el 27 de enero de 1988 a las 3pm en avión, a diferencia de los demás prisioneros que llegaban en barcazas y los recibían a golpes. Era como vivir en un pueblo del interior; había gente por todas partes. El que no trabajaba lo castigaban. El trabajo que se practicaba era la agricultura y ganadería. Trabajar alimentaba más el espíritu a diferencia de estar en la cárcel modelo, donde siempre estabas en la celda a menos que tuvieras un permiso por tiempo limitado para estar en el patio. Pero estar en la celda todo el día enferma.

El 14 de febrero el presidente de la época Belisario Porras establece provisionalmente Coiba como una penitenciaria.

En Coiba no existían celdas específicamente, sólo en el edificio principal de la central. Yo estuve en la celda 21 en el segundo piso del edificio principal por un tiempo. Más bien, había campamentos distribuidos por toda la isla, incluyendo Jicarón.

En la prisión no existen amigos ni hermanos. Quizás existe el compañerismo por conveniencia. Porque a la hora de la verdad nadie te da la mano, hay que defenderse como uno pueda.

En fin, no le deseo la prisión a nadie, ni a mi peor enemigo. Caer preso es perder tu valor, es convertirse en un despojo de la sociedad. Es como vivir muerto, preso.

¿Cuánto tiempo pasabas sin ver a tu familia, ya que no era fácil que les hicieran visitas?

Nunca tuve visitas. Nunca tuve ninguna encomienda. Desde el primer día que caí preso, quedé incomunicado con mi familia.

Y cuando me enviaron a Coiba el pensamiento de mi familia era que nunca iba a regresar. Nunca supieron nada de mí hasta 1994 cuando estaba trabajando con los investigadores españoles y el ingeniero Jiménez hizo el trámite para que mi papá y mi hermano fueran a visitarme. Ahí se dieron cuenta de que estaba vivo.

How long were you in prison?

The sentencing of my case was in 1986. First, I was remanded to La Carcel Modelo (The Model Jail) where I stayed for almost one year.

Later, I asked to be sent to Coiba. I wanted to know why everyone was so afraid of going, and I also wanted to go because my intention was to escape and be free. I thought it would be easy once I was there.

The sentence was 17 years. The total time of my incarceration was 13 years and 8 months. Almost 12 of those years were in Coiba. I was 22 years old at the time.

Why did they reduce your sentence?

I think that they reduced my sentence because when the island was declared a national park on December 17th 1991, I started working with the scientists who came to do research. They wanted to work with someone who could show them the island and because by then I was considered a prisoner of confidence, the guards recommended me. It was then that I started a new chapter of my life. From 19931998, I was mostly with the scientists working on their research.

What was it like to be a prisoner on Coiba?

For me it was different than those who arrived beaten on barges. I arrived on January 27th, 1988 by airplane. It was like living in a village in the interior or out in the country. There were people from everywhere. If you did not work you were punished. Most of the work was with agriculture and cattle. Working fed the spirit, which was a contrast to La Carcel Modelo where you sat in a cell or waited for permission for brief visits to the patio. Being in a cell all day makes you sick.

In Coiba there were few actual cells. They were only in the principal building of the central area. For a time, I was in Cell 21 on the second floor of that building. Mostly, there were camps spread all over the island including Jicaron.

In prison there are no friends or brothers. Perhaps convenient relationships exist, but at the moment of truth nobody gives you a hand, and you have to defend yourself as well as you can.

In the end, I would not wish prison for anyone. Not even my worst enemy. Being incarcerated is to be left stripped from society and worthless. Incarceration is living death.

Since visiting was difficult how long did you go without seeing your family?

I never received a visitor or even a package. I was incommunicado from my family right from my first day in jail. When I was sent to Coiba my family thought I would never come back. They never received word from me until 1994 when I was working with a Spanish investigation, and Mr. Jimenez, an engineer, made arrangements for my father and my brother to visit me. It was only then that they realized I was alive.

¿Qué te hizo apreciar la naturaleza de Coiba o qué te hizo sentir ese interés y te motivó a ser la diferencia?

En primer lugar, antes de llegar a la estación biológica en ese tiempo, yo estaba trabajando en la marina. Ahí era el encargado de repartir el alimento a diferentes playas, y me convertí en alguien de confianza. A veces me daban el timón del bote ya que ellos sabían que yo no me quería escapar. Luego me recomendaron y me mandaron para la estación.

Al estar en la estación, vi las cosas de otra manera, que todo lo que existe en la naturaleza está por algo, incluyendo al hombre. Entonces me acordé de mi niñez en Kuna Yala, cuando mis padres me hablaban de la naturaleza y de amar la naturaleza. Cuando empecé a relacionarme con los investigadores me enseñaron mucho sobre biología y a bucear con tanque. Todo eso en conjunto me motivó.

Después de toda mi vida en el penal, fue por eso que me enamoré de Coiba y mi sueño era que existiera la ley para que se convirtiera en parque. ¿Qué aprendiste estando preso en Coiba?

La prisión es una universidad. Uno aprende de todo. Se aprende malicia, la viveza, la estafa, y a hacer todo tipo de maldades. He tratado de descifrar a las personas y pienso, ¿por qué los policías maltratan a la gente?, o ¿por qué la gente se maltrata entre sí?, ¿qué se gana con eso?; me gustaría abrirle los ojos a esas personas y decirles que la naturaleza esta ahí y está viendo. No dejo de preguntarme, ¿qué busca el hombre en hacer maldades? En cambio, la naturaleza te recibe y te abre los brazos, pero el hombre no lo valora. El hombre llegó allá con el fin de castigar y acabar con la naturaleza. Pero no pudieron con Coiba.

What made you appreciate the nature on Coiba? What happened that you became interested and what motivated you to make a difference?

Initially, before the biological station was set up, I worked at the marina. I was in charge of delivering food to the different beaches, and I became a prisoner of confidence. Sometimes they would give me the wheel of the boat knowing that I would not escape. Later, they sent me to the station.

When I was there I began to see things differently, suddenly everything in nature had a place, even man. Then, I remembered my childhood in Kuna Yala and my parents telling me about nature and loving nature. When I started to develop relationships with the scientists, they taught me a lot about biology, and they also taught me to scuba dive with a tank. All of this together is what motivated me. After a lifetime in a penal colony, I fell in love with Coiba, and my dream became to see laws that would convert it into a park.

What did you learn as a prisoner on Coiba?

Prison itself is a university. You learn something about everything.

You learn about malice and fraud as well as to be crafty and street wise. You learn something about all the evils. I have tried to figure people out, and I wonder why the police mistreat the people? Or why do people mistreat each other? What can be gained from this? I would like to open their eyes and tell them Mother Nature is out there, and she is watching. I can never stop asking myself, what is man looking for when he does these things? On the other hand, Mother Nature is there with her arms opened wide to receive, but man sees no value in that. Man went there to punish and to destroy nature, but he could not do it, not in Coiba.

¿Cómo fue volver a la ciudad?

Salí libre el seis de agosto de 1998. Al llegar a la ciudad, no sabía ni adonde ir ni a quien contactar. Llegué con unos compañeros y traía algunos ahorros, pero lo primero que hice fue celebrar con una cerveza. Fui a Calidonia y busqué el centro de Mulatupu, mi comunidad en Kuna Yala, y así contacté a mi familia. Estaba contento.

Empecé a buscar trabajo, pero siempre me pedían mi record policivo, y al decir que venía de Coiba, la gente fruncía el ceño y me rechazaban. Finalmente, en diciembre de 1998, conseguí trabajo en el hospital San Miguel Arcángel que estaba acabado de inaugurar.

Estuve ahí por dos años. ¿Por qué decidiste volver a Coiba?

Me di cuenta que no me gustaba la ciudad. Y como ya tenía contactos en el parque, me acerqué al director del parque en ese tiempo, Clemente Núñez. El me ayudó y me llevó a ANCON, donde me contrataron como guardaparques hasta el sol de hoy.

Ya conocía todos los sitios en Coiba y ya había trabajado con los investigadores. Estaba familiarizado con los planes de manejo, y eso me motivó para regresar allá. Cuando regresé fue empezar una nueva vida, pero esta vez para proteger y conservar todo lo que existe en la isla.

How did you return to the city?

I was released on August 6th, 1998. I arrived in the city, and I did not know where to go or who to contact. I had arrived with some companions and some savings. The first thing we did was celebrate with a beer. I went looking for the Centro de Mulatupo, my community from Kuna Yala’s center in Calidonia. It was there that I contacted my family, and it was a happy time.

I began looking for work, but they always asked for my police record then frowned and rejected me. Finally, in December of 1998 I got a job at the then newly inaugurated San Miguel Arcángel Hospital. I was there for two years.

What made you decide to return to Coiba?

I realized that I did not like the city, and since I had contacts on the island, I approached the director at that time, Clemente Nuñez. He helped me and took me to ANCON where I was contracted to be a park ranger, a position that I still hold.

I knew all the sites on Coiba. I had worked with the investigations, and I was familiar with there management plans. All of this motivated me to go back. It was when I returned that I started a new life, but this time I was there to protect and conserve all that existed on the island.

¿Cuáles son tus planes futuros?

Escribir un libro de mi vida. También poner una escuela u organización de educación ambiental. Enseñarle al ser humano sobre todas las riquezas naturales, para valorarlas.

Me he dado cuenta de que la mayoría de los extranjeros valoran más Coiba que los mismos panameños. Pienso que es la cultura, y que no hemos terminado de aprender a valorar los recursos naturales que tenemos aquí.

¿Qué mensaje le envías al resto de los ciudadanos con respecto a Coiba?

Coiba no es sólo de los panameños sino también de la humanidad. Es un sitio muy especial. Mi mensaje es que amemos la naturaleza y nos olvidemos de que Coiba es un lugar que recuerda terror. Que empecemos a ver Coiba con una nueva perspectiva y cuidemos todos sus recursos. Coiba esconde muchos secretos.

También me gustaría que el gobierno y las autoridades nos tomaran más en cuenta, a nosotros los guardaparques.

Siento que no nos tienen el respeto debido. Hacemos el mismo trabajo que los policías; somos los policías de la naturaleza, pero para las autoridades no significamos nada.

Cuando uno es ambientalista de verdad, uno es feliz con el trabajo aunque no se gane mucho.

What are your plans for the future?

I want to write my biography. I would also like to establish a school or organization for environmental education. Teach human beings all about nature’s riches, so they can value them. I have noticed that foreigners seem to cherish Coiba more than Panamanians. I think it is culture. We have not yet learned to value the natural resources we have here.

What message would you send to your fellow citizens?

Coiba is not just a domain for Panamanians; it is a domain for all humanity. It is a very special place. My message is love nature and forget that this was once an island of terror.

We need to see Coiba with a new perspective and care for it and its resources. Coiba has many secrets.

I would also like the government and authorities to have more consideration for us, the park rangers. I feel that we do not receive the respect that we deserve. We work just as the police do; only we are nature’s police, and the authorities do not see the significance of this. When you are truly an environmentalist, you are happy with your work in spite of low wages.

Es por eso que hemos tenido la oportunidad de entrevistar al excelentísimo Sr. Richard Austen, embajador de Gran Bretaña, que nos cuenta sobre su vida antes de venir a Panamá y de cómo ha disfrutado del país hasta el momento.

Richard Austen estudió Teología en la Universidad de Bristol. Trabajó en el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores por más de 20 años en donde ejerció en diferentes puestos. Este es su sexto puesto en Panamá. Ha sido embajador de Mongolia, y ha trabajado en Tanzania, Canadá, Gambia y Mauricio. Sin embargo, es su primera vez trabajando en esta parte del mundo. Su periodo de embajador ha sido desde el 2006 hasta principios del 2011. El Sr. Austen también es diácono en la Catedral de San Lucas y le interesan las artes y la música. Le gusta mucho caminar en el Parque Omar. ¿Qué sabía de nuestro país antes de visitarnos?

Sabía poco. Mi padre era capitán de barco y pasó por el Canal muchas veces. Cuando regresaba a casa nos hablaba de Panamá y el Canal, que era una obra fantástica. El falleció, pero estoy seguro que estaría muy orgulloso de saber que ahora soy embajador en Panamá.

At Escapes magazine we are always interested in what people think about Panama, so it was our pleasure to have an opportunity to interview His Excellency Mr. Richard Austen, the Ambassador from Great Britain to Panama. He was kind enough to share some of his life history and his thoughts on Panama.

Richard Austen studied theology at Bristol University in England. He has worked with the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office for more than 20 years, occupying diverse positions during that time. He was the ambassador to Mongolia, and he has been posted in Tanzania, Canada, The Gambia, and Mauritius. He has held his sixth post since 2006, that of ambassador to Panama. This tour will finish at the beginning of 2011. Mr. Austen is a deacon at the Cathedral of St. Luke’s, he is interested in art and music, and he likes to go walking in Parque Omar.

What did you know about our country before coming here?

I knew a little. My father was a ship’s captain, and he went through the canal many times. When he came home he would tell us stories of Panama and of what a great engineering feat the canal was. He has since passed away, but I am sure that he would be very proud of my being ambassador here.

¿Cuáles eran sus expectativas y qué aspectos de Panamá han logrado superarlas?

Cuando llegué aquí, entendí que era un país muy interesante, con muchos comercios británicos y con el Canal de Panamá; con vínculos muy fuertes con el Reino Unido. Espero que trabajemos sobre diferentes asuntos políticos y de comercio junto con otros proyectos como el del cambio climático. Todos nuestros visitantes que han venido salen con una perspectiva diferente de Panamá. Llegan pensando que es un pequeño país, pero se van sabiendo que es un país interesante con muchas cosas por hacer y con gente muy amable, y con una ciudad llena de vida. Lo mismo pensé yo, pero descubrí que estoy muy contento de vivir aquí, hay muchos restaurantes y lugares para visitar en el fin de semana. Estuve en las Sirenas hace poco, en Santa Clara, y después fuimos a El Valle. Hay mucho que hacer para los turistas. He tenido la oportunidad de visitar muchos lugares del país, como Darién, Colón, Kuna Yala, Bocas del Toro, Puerto Armuelles, Chitré, Los Santos, Pedasí, y Boquete. Me gusta mucho viajar por Panamá. ¿Qué es lo que más le ha gustado de Panamá?

Es una pregunta difícil de responder. Me gustan mucho las montañas y playas. Me gustan mucho las fiestas típicas como el Festival de la Mejorana, Corpus Cristi, y el festival de los diablos en Portobelo. La historia de lugares como Portobelo y San Lorenzo es muy interesante.

What were your expectations before coming, and what aspects of Panama might have surpassed them?

When I arrived, I understood that it was an interesting country with a number of British commercial interests and strong ties with the United Kingdom. We work on a variety of political and commercial issues as well as projects on issues like climate change.

All of our visitors leave Panama with a different perspective from the one they arrived with. They arrive not knowing much about Panama. They fall in love with the place while they are here and depart knowing that it is an intriguing land with a lot to do, amiable people, and a lively capital city. I am very happy living here. My work is varied and interesting. There are lots of restaurants and places to go at the weekend. Not so long ago, I was at Las Sirenas in Santa Clara, and then we went up to El Valle. There is a lot for visitors to do.

I have had the occasion to visit a number of places here like Darien, Colon, Kuna Yala, Bocas del Toro, Puerto Armuelles, Chitre, Los Santos, Pedasi and Boquete. I really like travelling around Panama.

What have you most enjoyed in Panama?

This is a difficult question to answer. I love the mountains and the beaches. I really like the folk festivals such as the Mejorana Festival, Corpus Cristi, and the festival of the devils in Portobelo. The histories of sites like Portobelo and San Lorenzo are very intriguing.

¿Qué experiencias o lugares recomendaría tanto a panameños como a turistas?

Hay diferentes experiencias. A mí me gusta mucho el senderismo, montar bicicleta por la Cinta Costera, la observación de aves, hacer canopy, y también me gusta el river rafting. Hay oportunidades para todos los diferentes deportes. Mi prima, que me visitó hace poco, le gustó mucho el buceo en Panamá, especialmente en Bocas del Toro.

What places and experiences would you recommend to tourists and Panamanians alike?

There are so many things to do and different experiences to enjoy such as trail hiking bird watching, river rafting and canopy tours. I really like bicycling and make lots of use of the Cinta Costera and the Amador Causeway. There are a lot of sports options. My cousin, who recently visited, loved scuba diving in Panama, especially in Bocas del Toro.

Pasé unas buenas vacaciones en Sapi Benega, en Kuna Yala. Caminamos por la selva para ver una cascada. Definitivamente, he tenido muchos viajes fantásticos en Panamá.

I had a nice holiday at Sapi Benega in Kuna Yala, where we trekked through the jungle to see a waterfall. I have taken many wonderful trips in Panama.

Panamá es un país muy importante para el mundo, por el Canal.

Para los turistas puede ser un lugar muy diferente, con mucho que ver; es un país muy amable, seguro. Sé que muchos turistas seguirán visitando Panamá porque es una joya secreta.

In your opinion, what is the best asset Panama has to offer the world?

The Canal makes Panama very important to the world and it is fascinating for tourists too. For different people Panama can be many different places. There is a lot to see and discover, it is a very friendly country. I know that tourists will continue to come and visit. Panama is like a secret jewel.

Quiero decirles a los visitantes que Panamá es un lugar muy bueno para sus vacaciones. Es seguro, con gente amable, muchos hoteles y restaurantes buenos con buen servicio. Me parece que es muy interesante viajar de Chiriquí a Bocas del Toro en carro y apreciar las montañas. En Boquete me quedo en el hotel Panamonte, que me parece hermoso y la comida es fantástica. La Casa de Lourdes en El Valle me gusta mucho también. En la ciudad tengo una larga lista de restaurantes favoritos.

I would like to tell visitors that Panama is a good place to vacation with friendly people. There are lots of good hotels and restaurants that offer great customer service. The trip between Bocas del Toro and Chiriqui by car is an enjoyable way to see the mountains. I stayed at the Panamonte Hotel in Boquete and found it to be lovely, and the food was fantastic. I also really like La Casa de Lourdes and Los Capitanes in El Valle. I have a long list of favorite restaurants here in the city.

¿Qué lugar en Panamá no ha conocido y le gustaría conocer?

Quisiera conocer un poco más la costa Atlántica.

Where have you not visited but would like to?

I would like to know more of the Atlantic Coast.

Cuatro de siete especies de tortugas, desde las más grandes hasta las pequeñas, anidan en las playas de Panamá; la tortuga verde, tortuga carey, tortuga baula y la tortuga golfita o del golfo.

Las tortugas carey son las que prevalecen en Panamá y viven alrededor de los corales y ambientes rocosos en donde se alimentan de esponjas. Es una especie casi exclusiva del trópico, crece hasta tres pies de largo y puede llegar a pesar 150 libras. Adquiere su nombre debido a la forma de su hocico. Sus patas y cabeza tienen un patrón similar al de un mosaico, pero su característica más distintiva es su caparazón. El caparazón es su parte más vulnerable y es de varios colores chocolatosos, anaranjados y hasta amarillos, que incluso han servido de inspiración para varios objetos decorativos. Aunque las especies reciben apoyo y protección por parte de varios acuerdos internacionales y de las leyes panameñas, las carey siguen en peligro debido a las amenazas ambientales y por la demanda de su caparazón.

Desde 1989, la pareja de esposos Dra. Four of seven species of turtles, from the largest to the smallest, nest on Panama beaches: the leatherback, green turtle, the hawksbill and the olive ridley.

The hawksbill is Panama’s most prevalent species, living among the coral reefs and rocky environments that provide its main source of food, sponges. Almost exclusively a tropical species, it grows to three feet in length and up to 150 pounds, acquiring its name from the shape of its beak. Its legs and head have a striking mosaic pattern, but its most distinguishing feature, and what makes it most vulnerable, is its multi-hued brown, orange or yellow shell, that humans use to make decorative tortoiseshell items. Though the species receives protections under various international agreements as well as Panamanian law, demand for its shell, along with threats to its habitat, keep the hawksbill’s status critically endangered most everywhere.

Since 1989, the husband and wife team of Dr. Anne Meylan and Dr. Peter Meylan have been conducting a study of the ecology and migrations of hawksbill and green marine turtles of Bocas del Toro Province, Panama, with support from the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Bocas del Toro has a particularly rich sea turtle fauna with four species and several life history stages represented. Investigations have focused on population structure, genetic identity, reproductive biology and migrations. Turtles are captured in traditional tangle nets,

Because this writer’s son attended Eckerd College with Peter, he and his wife stopped by our home one year on their way to Bocas del Toro.

Intrepid travelers, committed researchers, devoted parents, armed with a laptop, they headed up to the remote beaches of Panama and stayed with indigenous Ngobe in primitive lodging. They have continued this for many years with the assistance of the wildlife authority of Panama (Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente) and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

In 2003, the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC) began working to protect and restore the once globally significant sea turtle nesting population at Chiriquí Beach, Panama. The CCC, founded in 1959 and based in Gainesville, Florida, is the oldest and most accomplished sea turtle organization in the world. The CCC’s work in Panama will build upon an ongoing research project carried out since 1989

by Drs. Anne and Peter Meylan. The program consists of intensive monitoring of hawksbill and leatherback sea turtle nesting activity, protection of nesting females and their nests, and public education in the region. The project will involve local students and indigenous Ngöbe leaders in order to build a connection between the community and the project.

Aunque hoy en día el anidamiento es una fracción de lo que una vez fue, hay esperanzas de que las poblaciones de las tortugas carey respondan positivamente a una protección de largo plazo. En los últimos años se ha visto un incremento en los nidos de las tortugas carey en Cayo Zapatilla, Bocas del Toro; probablemente debido a la protección que se les ha dado a las tortugas carey desde que Cayo Zapatilla se volvió parte de un parque nacional marino en 1988. Playa Chiriquí en el Atlántico, también se considera uno de los lugares más importantes para el anidamiento de las tortugas baula, con un rango de entre 7,170 a 14,005 nidos de tortugas baula depositados anualmente entre la frontera de Nicaragua y Costa Rica y la región central de Panamá.

Según Southern Explorations, las dos especies de tortuga que menos oportunidad tendrá de ver en los tours por Panamá, son la tortuga verde y la tortuga caguama. Ambas especies se consideran en peligro de extinción. Las tortugas verdes anidan entre cada dos y cinco años entre junio y agosto, comúnmente en la Península de Azuero en la región central de Panamá. Aunque la gran tortuga caguama se encuentra en diferentes sitios de Panamá, es más probable divisarla en el agua que anidando en alguna playa.

Entre 20 y 30 mil tortugas visitan Panamá para anidar cada año, por lo que verlas se convierte en una actividad nocturna atractiva.

Dos buenos lugares para observarlas son playa Bluff en Isla Colón, provincia de Bocas del Toro, y en el refugio animal de Isla Cañas en la costa de la Península de Azuero, donde anidan las cuatro especies.

Establecidos en el 2001, la Convención Interamericana para la Protección y Preservación de Tortugas Marinas es el único acuerdo internacional diseñado para proteger estas especies y sus hábitats. En enero de 2008, Panamá se convirtió en el 12avo país en firmar el acuerdo.

This program should help protect and recover the hawksbill and leatherback populations of Chiriquí Beach and adjacent nesting sites.

Chiriquí Beach, Panama was once described by Dr. Archie Carr* as the most important nesting beach in the Caribbean for the “critically endangered” hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). However, by the 1980s and 1990s, sporadic aerial and ground surveys suggested that nesting had declined as much as 98%. Although today’s nesting population is only a fraction of what it once was, there is increased optimism that depleted hawksbill populations can respond positively to long-term protection. In Panama, increased hawksbill nesting has been observed at Zapatilla Cays in the last few years, very likely due to the enhanced protection that hawksbills have received since the cays became a part of a new national marine park in 1988. Chiriquí Beach also remains one of the most important sites for leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) nesting in the Atlantic, with as many as 7,170 to 14,005 leatherback nests deposited yearly between the Nicaragua/Costa Rica border and Central Panama.

According to Southern Explorations, the two turtle species you are least likely to see on your Panama tours are the Eastern Pacific green turtle (Chelonia Agassizii), also called the black sea turtle, and the loggerhead turtle. Both are considered endangered. Green turtles nest every two to five years between June and August, most commonly, off the Azuero Peninsula in central Panama. While the large loggerhead turtle is found around Panama, you are more likely to see one in the water than nesting on a Panama beach.

Twenty to thirty thousand turtles come to Panama to nest every year making the observation of Panama’s marine turtles nighttime sightseeing experience. Two great places to observe them are Playa Bluff on Isla Colon in Bocas del Toro Province, and the Isla de Canas Wildlife Refuge off the Azuero Peninsula where four species come to nest.

Established in 2001, the Inter-American Convention for the Protection and Preservation of Sea Turtles is the world’s only international agreement designed to protect these species and their habitat. In January of 2008, Panama became the twelfth country to sign the agreement.

If you are interested in learning more about the marine turtles of Panama, Southern Explorations has some excellent articles on the hawksbills, the olive ridleys and the leatherbacks. *A naturalist the likes of which may never be seen again, Dr. Carr was the founding scientific director of the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC) in Gainesville, Florida, a role he filled until his death in 1987.Through his research, teaching and writing, Dr. Carr is responsible for accumulating and distributing much of what is known about the biology and life cycle of sea turtles. He is credited by many for bringing the first international attention to the plight of marine turtles.

Entre los manjares sublimes que se degustan en nuestra América, dudo que haya uno que inspire tantas cosas como el ceviche.

Aunque no se discute su origen peruano, en donde consumirlo y disfrutarlo es casi una ceremonia, hoy quiero rendir tributo al ceviche panameño, más humilde en su preparación, pero a juicio de muchos, igual de suculento e inspirador. La historia del ceviche en Panamá se pierde, como muchas otras, entre cuentos y fábulas que hablan de lo humano y lo divino, pero que a fin de cuentas se disfruta por igual no importa cuál sea su origen. Prepararlo es mucho más sencillo que el ceviche peruano, pues es simplemente pescado crudo de carne blanca, principalmente corvina, macerado en jugo de limón al que sólo se le agrega cebolla, ají chombo al gusto, sal y pimienta. Si se prepara con mariscos como camarones, conchuelas (vieiras, scallops), calamar o pulpo, todos muy sabrosos también, deben ser cocinados primero y después llevar a cabo la maceración en jugo de limón. Por cierto, este líquido se conoce también como “leche de tigre”.

Hoy día, por el “desarrollo” de la gastronomía, han surgido variantes de ceviche supuestamente glorificado con ingredientes tales como yogurt, mayonesa, frutas, etc… cosa que me parece un crimen abominable. Confieso que prefiero la simplicidad del ceviche tradicional bien picante, acompañado sólo por galletas de soda o canastitas y una cerveza bien fría.

Among all the sublimely delectable foods of America I doubt that you will find one more adulated than ceviche. No one denies that its roots lie in Peru where consuming it and enjoying it is almost ceremonial, but today I am going to make a tribute to our Panamanian ceviche. It is indeed more humble in its preparation, but in the judgment of many equally succulent and worthy. The history of ceviche in Panama is long gone, like so many fables, its tale is lost somewhere between the real and the sublime and so ceviche just passes from generation to generation. In the end what matters is not the history but that it is savored and relished in spite of its lost beginnings. Its preparation is much less elaborate than that of its Peruvian cousin. It is simply raw, white fleshed fish, like corvina, soaked in lime juice to which is added onion, hot peppers, like aji chombo, salt and pepper. If you prepare it with other forms of seafood like shrimp, scallops, squid or octopus, although equally delicious, they must be cooked before they are soaked in the lime juice. Fish or shellfish the juice is also known as “leche de tigre”, tiger’s milk.

Today, as part of a gastronomic development movement, new variations of ceviche have emerged. It is now “glorified” with ingedients such as yogurt, mayonnaise, and fruit. I must confess I find these variations somewhat criminal aberrations, I still prefer the simplicity of traditional ceviche, spicy hot, and accompanied with soda crackers, and an ice cold beer.

Ceviche de Corvina al estilo Panameño Panamanian style Ceviche de Corvina Ingredientes: 2 libras de filete de corvina cortado en cuadritos pequeños. ¾ de taza de cebolla picadita.

2 ½ tazas de jugo de limón.

Ají chombo (chile habanero) al gusto.

C/n de sal y pimienta negra recién molida.

Procedimiento: Sazonar el pescado cortado con sal y pimienta y dejar descansar por 10 minutos. Añadir las cebollas y el jugo de limón (que cubra ligeramente el pescado) y mezclar muy bien. Tapar y refrigerar por lo menos 5 horas. Servir con galletas de soda o canastitas.

Nota importante: Este procedimiento también es válido para preparar ceviche con otros mariscos, sólo que, como en el caso de camarones, conchuelas, calamares y pulpo, estos deben primero cocinarse.

Ingredients: 2 lbs. Corvina fillets cubed in small pieces ¾ cup finely chopped onion 2 ½ cups fresh lime juice Aji chombo, (habanero chilies) to taste Salt and freshly ground pepper Procedure: Season the cubed fish with salt and pepper, leave to rest for 10 minutes. Add the onion and the lime juice insuring that it slightly covers the fish. Cover and refrigerate for at least 5 hours Serve with little pastry shells or soda crackers.

Important notes: Always use non reactive utensils and glass receptacles Remember that when using any seafood other than a fleshy white fish, like shrimp, scallops, squid, and octopus you must precook it.
