Destino

A poca distancia del Canal de Panamá y conformada por una gruesa capa de selva, Darién se convierte en una espesa frontera natural entre Panamá y la hermana República de Colombia. Al igual que El Amazonas, Darién es considerada uno de los pulmones naturales más importantes del mundo. Para el más osado y entusiasta amante de la naturaleza, es una gran aventura.

Aquí la naturaleza es la más hermosa.

Sus ríos son las carreteras; y las montañas y cerros son selva virgen. Los coloridos nativos Wounan y Emberá, tranquilos guardianes de la naturaleza, quienes aman orgullosamente su tierra, habitan esta selva.Los hombres trabajan y tallan la madera de manera hermosa.

Entre sus trabajos de tallado sobresale la tagua, una semilla que después de ser trabajada parece cobrar vida en pequeñas serpientes, monos, ranas, entre otras figuras que sorprenden al ojo más exigente. Mientras, las mujeres tejen exquisitas canastas. Todo el trabajo, sin duda, se hace a mano.

This is Panama’s largest and least populated province.

Darien consists of thickly layered dense rain forest just beyond the Panama Canal and between the Colombian border, the Darien, like the Amazon, is one of the world’s important green lungs. It is an adventure for the hardiest and most nature loving enthusiast.

Nature here is at its finest. The rivers are the roads, the hills and mountains are virginal forest. The rain forest is inhabited by the colorful Wounan and Embera natives who are peaceful, nature loving people who proudly love their land.

The men do beautiful wood and tagua (a large seed) carvings and the women weave exquisite baskets.

There are several towns with airstrips and scheduled service, but this adventure can be dangerous. It is recommended that a visitor engages an experienced guide.

Tucked along the Pacific coast, near the town of Jaque, you will find one of the most famous and renowned fishing villages in the world.

Un paraje donde no hay grandes árboles, ni muchos animales; un páramo de Azuero donde la vida es escasa y crece a duras penas.

Cada tronco de Sarigua nos recuerda que la tala y las quemas son sinónimos de muerte.

Donde alguna vez hubo abundancia y vida, se extiende un desierto llamado Sarigua. Un raje donde no hay grandes árboles, ni muchos animales; un páramos de Azuero donde la vida es escasa y crece a duras penas.

Aprovechando las primeras luces del día, exploro la antítesis del clásico parque nacional panameño. Podría decir que estoy en la analogía en pequeña escaladle desierto de Arizona.

Taking advantage of the early morning light, I explore the antithesis of a classic Panamanian national park. It could be a scaled down version of the Arizona desert.

A medida que me interno en estas tierras resquebrajadas por la sal y el viento se hace más fuerte la sensación de que camino por una suerte de cuerpo maltratado, senil arrugado por las inclemencias de la vida.

Que es un capricho de la naturaleza, no hay duda. Además de estar ubicado en la zona más árida y seca de Panamá, la provincia de Herrera, sus suelos han venido sufriendo un proceso de salinidad permanente.

Pero no solo la naturaleza y el clima causaron su desgaste dramático. Más de 11 mil años de ocupación human, la tala intensiva y la quema de pastizales para potreros han convertido al Parque Nacional Sarigua en el símbolo de lo que podría ser la devastación de los ecosistemas.

Al pie de un mirador que se eleva sobre el desierto, Juan Aguilar, lugareño y ex jefe del parque, no oculta su orgullo por Sarigua. Acostumbrado a educar a los escolares que llegan a su tierra, sabe muy bien cómo definir al área protegida.

“El Parque Nacional Sarigua es único, ya que fue creado para la educación ambiental -me explica el ex jefe del parque-para demostrar lo que no debemos hacer y para entender cuáles son los efectos de los malos manejos de los recursos, en este caso la deforestación”.

Aún así, la piel cuarteada de Sarigua posee una belleza surrealista. Hoy, se extiende sobre un terreno llano y polvoriento, matizado por escasas agrupaciones de arbustos, suculentas y cactus propios del bosque seco tropical que han sobrevivido gracias a los cuidados de la Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente.

Sin embargo, de sus bosques costeros, más de 8 mil hectáreas verdes que llegaban hasta los manglares del Pacífico, queda muy poco. Durante el último siglo, la tala y la quema hicieron estragos. Esta peligrosa realidad no ha cambiado mucho en la actualidad.

Con la llegada de cada verano, el humo y el fuego anuncian el comienzo de quemas irracionales que continúan destruyendo el escaso bosque seco que alberga la región, con objeto de transformarlos en potreros y pastizales.

Juan Aguilar me guía por los senderos de la devastación. Señala unos montículos que muestran las huellas de la erosión. Cerca al joven funcionario, algunos troncos exentos de vida exponen sus raíces indicando lo que en un tiempo fue el nivel normal del suelo. Hacia donde miro, son palpables las huellas del hombre como verdugo de una frágil naturaleza agonizante, doblegada.

As I trek further into this parched land, abused by salty winds, I get the feeling that I am treading upon an old and mistreated body, senile and wrinkled by the inclemency of life itself.

It is a whim of nature, there is no doubt. Located in Herrera, the driest, most arid province of Panama, it also must deal with a permanently saline saturated soil base.

Yet nature alone did not cause the dramatic ruin. More than 11,000 years of human occupation, intensive cutting, burning and clearing pastures, has taken its toll. The Sarigua National Park is a symbol of the results of devastation and foreshadows the possible effects on all eco-systems.

Juan Aguilar, the ex-park keeper, does not hide his pride. Accustomed to educating visiting school children, he talks about this protected area.

“Sarigua National Park is unique and it was created for environmental education, to demonstrate what we should not do and what the effects of bad resource management are, in this case, deforestation.”

Yet, few of the 8,000 hectares of green coastal forests that once stretched down to the Pacific mangroves still exist. Over the last century, cutting, slashing, and burning have disfigured the land and these dangerous activities continue.

Every dry season is announced by the smoke and fire of the irrational burn offs that continue to destroy the region’s ever dwindling forests in search of more farm and pasture lands.

Juan Aguilar guides me through the trails of devastation. He points out mounds that earmark erosion. Close by, the exposed root system of some tree trunks indicate where, at one time, the normal soil levels used to be.

Wherever I look I can see and feel the footprint of an assassin … man. Nature is fragile and twisted in agony.

In spite of it all, this cracked land possesses a surreal beauty.

Today it spreads over a flat and dusty plain randomly dotted with occasional clusters of bushes, succulents, and tropical cactuses that have survived thanks to the Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente (the national environmental authority).

Estudios hechos por antropólogos desde la década del 60 han determinado que los aborígenes de Azuero practicaron la tala desde tiempos inmemoriales. La actividad se acrecienta con la llegada de la Corona española que se establece en Parita a mediados del siglo XV. Las llamas desgastan los suelos, hacen perder sus nutrientes, acaban con los hongos, con los musgos, con valiosas plantas y animales. Así mueren especies que forman una riquísima cadena de vida que nos brinda importantes servicios ambientales, como son la retención de agua y la filtración de gases nocivos para los humanos.

No sólo la naturaleza y el clima causaron su desgaste dramático.

Más de 11 mil años de ocupación humana y y la quema de pastizales para potreros han convertido al Parque Nacional Sarigua en el símbolo de lo que podría ser la devastación de los ecosistemas.

Hacia donde miro, son palpables las huellas del hombre como verdugo de una frágil naturaleza.

Anthropological studies conducted in the 1960s indicate that the aboriginal people of Azuero were slashing and cutting in the area from the beginning of time. The activity increased with the arrival of the Spanish crown when they established the town of Parita in the 15th century.

Besides annihilating fungus, moss, and other valuable plants and animals, fire debilitates soil causing it to lose its nutrients.

Nature alone did not cause the dramatic ruin. More than 11 thousand years of human occupation, intensive cutting, burning and clearing pastures has taken its toll.

Es el pez más grande del mundo y a la vez uno de los más amigables. Pero esa inocencia del animal puede tornarse en su propia amenaza.

Es por eso que en esta entrevista al Dr. Héctor Guzmán junto con la colaboración de MarViva, informan sobre la importancia del pez en nuestros mares y de la adecuada forma de interactuar con el animal para protegerlo debidamente.

Héctor M. Guzmán, biólogo marino, trabaja en Panamá desde 1987 y es científico permanente del Instituto Smithsonian de Investigaciones Tropicales. ¿Cuál es la importancia de esta especie?

Es el pez más grande que existe.

¿Es esta especie agresiva?

En absoluto, es dócil e inofensiva; por eso es acosada por los turistas, convirtiéndose en una especie vulnerable al turismo y la pesca.

Según los reportes, ¿cuánto midió el espécimen más grande?

Es normal encontrarlos de unos 14 metros, aunque la mayoría son juveniles de entre 4 y 6 metros, pero existen registros de algunos de hasta 23 metros de largo.

Hector M.Guzman, marine biologist, has worked in Panama since 1987 and is a permanent scientist for the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

A gentle giant threatened by its very innocence. Whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean, are endangered by their friendly nature.

Mar Viva and Dr. Hector Guzman have collaborated in this interview to share important information about appropriate interaction with these magnificent and gentle creatures.

Why are they important?

The Whale Shark is the largest fish in existence.

Is the species aggressive?

Absolutely not, Whale Sharks are docile and inoffensive creatures and, as such, are often harassed by tourists, making them vulnerable to man in general and to the fishing industry.

How large are they?

Whale Sharks have been reported to measure up to 23 meters in length. The young are four to six meters and it is normal to see adults at around 14 meters.

¿Está en peligro de extinción esta especie?

La especie está catalogada como vulnerable y en riesgo de extinción futuro en la Lista Roja de Especies Amenazadas de la Unión Mundial para la Naturaleza (UICN), de la cual la República de Panamá es miembro al aprobar sus Estatutos mediante Ley Nº 26 de 10 de diciembre de 1993.

Está protegido internacionalmente y está listado en el Apéndice II de la Convención Internacional sobre el Comercio de Especies Amenazadas de Flora y Fauna Silvestre (CITES) y la Convención sobre la Conservación de las Especies Migratorias de Animales Silvestres (CMS), ambas ratificadas por Panamá mediante Ley Nº 14 de 28 de octubre de 1977 y Ley Nº 5 de 3 de enero de 1989, respectivamente. Además, el tiburón ballena está considerado como especie altamente migratoria y se debe asegurar su conservación según el artículo 64 y el Anexo I de la Convención de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Derecho del Mar (CONVEMAR), ratificada por la República de Panamá mediante Ley Nº 38 de 4 de junio de 1996.

Are they endangered?

The species is registered as vulnerable and at risk of future extinction. It appears on the Red List of Threatened Species maintained by the world conservation organization, UICN. (By law passed in 1993, 1977 and 1989 respectively, the Republic of Panama is a member of the UNIC and several other world conservation groups for wildlife and migratory animals such as CITES, CMS.) Whale sharks are also protected internationally by the United Nation’s convention, CONVEMAR, ratified by Panama in 1996 and by executive order, no. 9 of April 21, 2009.

¿Se puede avistar en Panamá, en qué época y en qué lugares?

Se encuentran en Panamá en ambos lados del istmo, más comúnmente en el Pacifico y cualquier lugar cerca de la costa. Se destacan zonas cercanas de Coiba y Las Perlas. Todo el año se pueden observar solitarios o en grupos. Hemos visto hasta 23 animales juntos. En la mayoría de los casos los grupos están formados por individuos de un mismo sexo.

¿Qué cosas debemos tener presentes al nadar con esta especie?

Lo más importante es no tocarlos, ni montarse sobre ellos; sólo debemos nadar a la par y disfrutarlos. No acercar los botes muy rápido y colocárseles al frente, ellos son curiosos y se acercan solos. Ser un buen operario turístico y turista responsable. Según el Decreto No 9 del 2009, le corresponde a la Autoridad de los Recursos Acuáticos de Panamá reglamentar la participación de esta especie en actividades turísticas de avistamiento.

Le hemos solicitado a la ARAP que reglamente de forma urgente esta actividad en conjunto con la Autoridad de Turismo de Panamá y la Autoridad Nacional del Ambiente, debido al incremento en el acoso a estos animales en la zona de Cebaco-Coiba en particular.

¿Para qué se les coloca el transmisor satelital? ¿Qué quiere estudiar la ciencia al colocarles este dispositivo?

Nos permite darle seguimiento al animal y estudiar su comportamiento y patrones de movimiento diario y estacional; nos permite establecer rutas migratorias y la conectividad entre países, además de comportamiento de buceo diurno y nocturno y darnos información sobre la temperatura del agua donde se encuentra.

When and where can they be seen in Panama?

Though they are more common in the coastal areas of the Pacific, Whale Sharks can be seen on both sides of the isthmus. They often congregate near Coiba and the Las Perlas islands, and are seen in groups or on their own, usually congregating in same sex groups. We have seen a gathering of 23 whale sharks.

What should we be aware of while swimming with them?

The most important thing is to not touch them or try to ride them but, instead, swim alongside peacefully and enjoy them. Do not approach Whale Sharks in speeding boats and face them; they are curious and will approach you. Be good tour operators and responsible tourists.

According to the laws passed in 2009, the regulation of this activity corresponds to ARAP the authority that governs the aquatic resources of the country.

Due to increased incidences of harassment, we have requested, with some urgency, that they work in conjunction with the tourism authorities and the environmental authorities, especially in the Cebaco-Coiba zone.

Why are they fitted with satellite transmitters and what does science expect to learn from this?

This allows us to follow the animal and study its habits and patterns of daily and seasonal movement. We can trace its migratory routes and inter- country connections. We can learn about its daily and nocturnal diving routines and measure the water temperatures wherever it is found.

¿Cómo podemos ayudar a conservar esta especie? Prohibiendo su pesca, como ya se ha hecho a nivel internacional.

Regulando el comportamiento de operarios turísticos y turistas, quienes los acosan y se les montan encima sujetándose de la aleta dorsal. Debe prohibirse tocarlos.

Por otro lado, apoyando a los científicos; los turistas les están removiendo los transmisores a los animales afectando años de investigación y conocimientos necesarios para su conservación.

Si les preguntan a la mayoría de los surfistas sobre los mejores destinos alrededor del mundo, muchos estarían de acuerdo en incluir en la lista Hawaii, Australia, Fiji, Tavarua, Indo, y Costa Rica. Estos lugares reciben la mejor atención de parte de la industria del surf, y como resultado, también son los destinos más visitados.

La República de Panamá es conocida por su canal, su moderna ciudad, su distrito financiero y zona libre, pero como destino para surf es usualmente ignorada. Lo que la gente no sabe es que las condiciones de surf en Panamá pueden ser tan buenas o mejor que cualquier otro lugar del mundo.

If you ask most surf travelers about the best surf destinations around the world, the majority would likely agree on a list that includes Hawaii, Australia, Fiji, Tavarua, Indo, and Costa Rica. These locations receive the greatest attention by the surf industry and, as a result, they are the spots most traveled to.

The Republic of Panama is well known for its canal, modern city, banking district and free zone, but is often overlooked as a surfing destination. What people don’t know is that surfing conditions in Panama can be as good as or better than anywhere else in the world.

Gracias a la geografía única de Panamá, y sus 2,490 km de costa con aguas puras, hay playas en donde el surf siempre está presente y es adaptable para todo surfista.

En Panamá hay surf todo el año debido a consistentes olas que alcanzan tamaños de 2 a 12 pies, y dependiendo de la temporada pueden llegar a los 20 pies. Cada año de diciembre hasta abril, donde las olas derechas e izquierdas rompen en su mejor punto, las playas en el Pacífico atraen un significativo número de surfistas.

There is year round surf in Panama due to consistent waves averaging from 2 ft to 12 ft and, depending on the season, as much as 20 feet. Every year from December to April, when the right and left breaking waves are at their best, the Pacific beaches attract international surfers in significant numbers.

In the past, all but the most adventurous surf travelers were restricted by difficulties in access and available accommodations in many of the most remote surf spots; these challenges have been reduced dramatically with the recent growth in Panama’s tourism industry. You can find surfing less than an hour away by land or by air on both coasts.

¿Qué es el Biomuseo?

El Biomuseo, otra extraordinaria creación del insigne arquitecto Frank Gehry, es un proyecto impulsado por la Fundación Amador, con el fin de crear un enlace entre Panamá y el mundo, para contar la historia del surgimiento del Istmo de Panamá hace tres millones de años, acontecimiento que cambió la vida en la Tierra.

Cuenta con el apoyo del Gobierno de Panamá, del Instituto Científico Smithsonian y la Universidad de Panamá.

What is The Biodiversity Museum?

Another extraordinary creation of the notable architect Frank Gehry, the museum was propelled by the Fundación Amador to create a liaison between the Panamanian people and the world. With the cooperation of the Panamanian Government, the Smithsonian Institute, and the University of Panama, it will relate the story of the isthmus’ raising out of the ocean three million years ago, an event that changed the earth.

The mission of the museum will be to change perspectives on how people see things, how they interact, and how they care for the environment. It is, indeed, an educational instrument with the objective of illustrating the value of the country’s biodiversity.

Design and construction From the moment that Frank Gerhy agreed to collaborate on the project, he made it clear that the project had to have an impact on society. The building is not simply an edifice to be admired from an architectural perspective, but also as a guardian of invaluable knowledge for Panama and the rest of the world.

Ciertamente, Gehry dejará su firma inconfundible, y con ella quiere dejar una huella marcada en la historia de la cultura panameña. El Biomuseo será la primera incursión de Gehry en América Latina, lo cual genera una gran expectativa e impacto en el aspecto turístico y cultural.

Contará con ocho galerías con exhibiciones interactivas que narran cada paso en la historia de la creación del Istmo, diseñadas por Bruce Mau. Habrá también otras salas diseñadas para albergar exhibiciones temporales, cafeterías, tiendas y un parque botánico diseñado por la paisajista Edwina von Gal.

El reto será que el visitante se lleve consigo más que un recuerdo, una experiencia de vida al entrar y recorrer las salas de exhibición.

El museo de la biodiversidad le propone al visitante un papel protagónico en la búsqueda de respuestas, a través de modelos funcionales conocidos como mecanismos de asombro. Este formato de exhibición facilita el aprendizaje de una manera más activa, gracias al impacto visual y físico que transmite el concepto de cada sala, provocando así diferentes sensaciones al visitante.

Actualmente, el Museo de la Biodiversidad está en construcción y su apertura está programada para el primer cuatrimestre del 2011.

En la actualidad, cuenta con el programa de visitas “Conoce el Biomuseo”, dándole la oportunidad a la comunidad de conocer las instalaciones y entender cómo funcionarán sus exhibiciones. También existe el programa de membresías “Amigos del Biomuseo”, que le permite a sus afiliados colaborar junto con Amigos Fundadores, apoyando todos los programas educativos y culturales. Esta ubicado estratégicamente en el área de Fuerte Amador a la entrada del Pacífico al Canal de Panamá.

Surely, Gerhy will leave his undeniable mark and, with it, his footprint in the cultural history of Panama. The museum, Gerhy’s first in Latin America, has generated great expectations for an impact on culture and tourism.

There will be eight large galleries of interactive exhibitions, designed

by Bruce Mau, narrating each step in the history of the isthmus’ creation; salons for temporary exhibitions; cafeterias and stores; and a botanical park designed by the landscape artist Edwina von Gal. The goal is that visitors leave with more than just a memory and that wandering through the exhibits will change their lives. Each visitor will be a protagonist in search of answers waiting for them in the amazing working models throughout the museum. Thanks to the visual and physical concept of each exhibition, this format allows the visitor to play an active role and provoke a variety of sensations.

The museum is presently under construction and programmed to be completed in the first quarter of 2011. The visitor program, “Conoce el Biomuseo” (get to know the Biodiversity Museum), gives the community an opportunity to learn about and understand the function of the exhibits. The membership program, Amigos de Biomuseo” (Friends of The Biodiversity Museum), allows its affiliates to collaborate with the “Amigos Fundadores” (Founding Friends), and support all the educational and cultural programs. The museum is strategically located in Fort Amador at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal.

Mi gran amigo, Ángel Revilla Argüeso, decía que … “el lenguaje produce el efecto del poder creativo. Esta creatividad es, a la vez, actividad social y producto de una cultura”.

No cabe duda que es así. El panameño, en lo que respecta al proceso de comunicación es altamente creativo, quizá por la gran variedad de identidades culturales que transitan por nuestro país.

Pedro Altamiranda, cantante popular, en varios de sus calipsos narra la existencia de una pluralidad de conceptos para hacer referencia a una sola cosa; este es el caso de la parte sexual femenina… Si no me creen ubiquen la canción en “youtube”.

¿A qué viene lo anterior?

Todos los pueblos y culturas del planeta desarrollaron y desarrollan formas particulares de transmisión de información vía lenguaje, sea éste verbal, mímico, matemático, musical o corporal (si existe otro… se me escapó).

En el caso de Hispanoamérica, la mezcla de esos lenguajes produjo y produce (y seguirá produciendo) una especie de “ZOMBIE” para la intercomunicación o para la interacción mensaje-receptor (¡Chuletas!… y este término sí es académico).

¿Cómo es ese ZOMBIE comunicador en Panamá?

A ver si recuerdo… La fusión de tantos pueblos y culturas nos lleva a expresarnos de manera particular: hablamos con gestos, cortamos e invertimos palabras, somos onomatopéyicos, utilizamos

Professor Kam’s article on “Panamanisms” in language is largely dedicated to interesting aspects of cultural creativity on the Spanish language spoken in Panama.

As happens in every culture, diversity affects the development of all areas of communication albeit spoken, mimicry, musical or body language.

Professor Kam explains many of the results that this impact has had on Panama, a country with a long history of cultural diversity. The fusion of so many cultures has produced a unique manner of expression and communication that includes speaking with gestures, cutting off words or inverting syllables, inverting word meanings, sound effects or just inventing when one just does not have the right word for the situation. In English there is, “whoosh” “yikes”, “gee wiz”, “crikey”, “splat” and “kaboom” and in Panama there are words like “zaaasss” , “puuuquiti”, and “chuummpluun.”

Getting street directions can be a whole lesson in confusion. Professor Kam’s example of someone asking directions to a mall is classically Panamanian and would go something like this: __ “Where is the “whatever shopping center?” __”Let me help you. Take this street until you arrive, in two streets, at the X pharmacy, then to your right you will see a green building, keep going right for three streets more until you arrive at the X restaurant, there you are pretty close to the mall, you will see three yellow houses but you still are not there, take a left and you can see the top of the mall in the distance, keep walking straight until you

No pasó nada; todos sucios, golpeados y “mojaos”.

¿Alguna más?

Pregunte una dirección en Panamá y alístese para lo que viene: -- ¿Dónde queda el Centro Comercial Tal? -- Cómo no Señor, yo le ayudo. Coja por esta calle hasta llegar a la intersección, luego siga dos calles más hasta la farmacia el capricho, luego ahí mismo coja a la derecha, verá un edificio verde clarito, que está como desteñido; siga por la derecha tres calles más hasta llegar al restaurante rincón de Nico, de allí al Centro Comercial no queda poco, verá tres casas amarillas, ahí no es, tome a la izquierda y a lo lejos verá la parte de arriba del Centro Comercial, como unos techitos rojos; camine derecho hasta llegar al semáforo, frente al almacén burbuja. Puede seguir recto o mejor toma el callejón hasta la casita de bloques. Justo en frente está el lugar que busca.

Professor Kam suggests you take a taxi or ask again in three streets, if you dare…

“Spanglish” plays a big role in Panamanian Spanish, the years of North American and Caribbean influence created linguistic mutations that have endured. There are actual conjugations of words like flat, as in flat tire. “Se me flateo la llanta” “my tire went flat”, flatear being a verb you will not find in any dictionary, makes perfect sense in a country that has creatively incorporated Anglicism’s for more than 150 years but it might possibly confuse a Spanish speaker anywhere else in the world. There are many fun and interesting examples, a neighborhood in the downtown area known as Perejil, the Spanish for parsley actually has its origins with a farmer named Perry who immigrated here and had his farm, Perry’s Hill, on a small hill where the neighborhood now stands. A “likibuy” is an endearment for a little boy on the Atlantic coast, a “tinaco” is a trash basket, early imported trash receptacles were made by a company named Tin&Co. and there you go……the list is long and flavorful, keep your ears open and you will hear them everywhere.

Advertencia: cuando esté escuchando las indicaciones no le mire las manos al que le da la dirección, porque seguro se pierde. Sino, le recomiendo que tome un taxi… eso sí, a ver si lo quiere llevar. Si no lo llevan, camine tres calles adelante y pregunte nuevamente. ¡Ah!, por cierto, hablamos “espanglish”. Si va a visitar el Canal le recomendamos un breve “stop” en Balboa, para que compre “souvenires”, los cuales tendrá que pagar “cash” porque no se aceptan tarjetas de crédito. Cerca puede tomar un “bus” que de un solo “rai” lo dejará bien “closs” de las esclusas de Mira�lores.

Qué le digo, hablamos hasta con el cuerpo; gesticulamos como si estuviéramos declamando. Agárrele las manos a un panameño mientras habla y pierde el hilo de la conversación, o no puede siquiera iniciarla. Damos información con las cejas, los ojos y la boca. Por ejemplo, una chica con los ojos le indica que los papeles que necesita los tienen allá, del otro lado, y para reforzar ese “allá” usa los labios como si estuviera besando.

Bueno, podemos decir muchas cosas del hablar del panameño, pero ya existen libros como Panameñismos y Claves para entender a los panameños, escrito por Ángel Revilla.

Ya para terminar, les ofrezco algunos panameñismos que inician con la letra A. “Aguaita, Braulio está achotado de llevar aguachinche al abejorro agelivioso ese. Se ve que Braulio anda algarete y con la abuelazón y la aguevazón”.

Bueno laope, como decía mi aguelito… esto está �inito.

Con un peso apenas superior a una libra, el mono Titi, o Tamarin (como le suelen llamar en inglés), es uno de los primates más pequeños de Centroamérica. Con sus entre 9 y 9.5 pulgadas, y una cola de entre 11.5 y 15 pulgadas, la hembra es ligeramente más grande que los machos. Con frecuencia son confundidos con otras especies de mono, como por ejemplo, el mono ardilla. Los Titis son pequeñas criaturas coloridas con las piernas y la parte baja del vientre pálidos, y las partes posteriores peludas y abigarradas con colores negros y amarillos. Su cola, excepcionalmente larga, es rojiza con una pequeña punta negra; otro distintivo es su cara libre de pelos. Pueden ser distinguidos de otras especies similares por sus cabezas rojas peludas marcadas en el centro con un remiendo triangular blanco.

Pueden encontrarse tanto en Panamá como en Colombia, más comúnmente en el litoral Pací�ico. Viven usualmente en la jungla, entre los árboles donde suelen encontrar y satisfacer su dieta de frutas, insectos y plantas. Estas ocupadas y juguetonas criaturas se comunican con un distintivo charloteo de silbidos, sonidos y tecleos; viven en grupos familiares donde ambos padres participan en la crianza de los más jóvenes.

Estas criaturas son sin duda habitantes de los árboles, sin embargo, bajan de la cima con más frecuencia que otros primates. Entre sus enemigos en la selva se pueden contar aves rapaces, gatos y serpientes. No están considerados entre las especies en peligro de extinción por la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de

Weighing in at just over a pound, the mono titi, or Geoffreys Tamarin (Saguinus geoffroyi), is the smallest of the Central American primates. Measuring a mere 9-9.5 inches, with a tail of 11.5-15 inches, the females are slightly larger than the males. They are often confused with marmosets and squirrel monkeys. Titis are colorful little creatures with pale legs and underbellies, and black and yellow variegated furry backs. Their exceptionally long tail is reddish brown with a black tip, and they have bare faces. They can be distinguished from other similar tamarins by their furry red heads marked in the center with a white triangular patch.

Found in Panama and Colombia, the mono titi is more likely to be found on the Paci�ic Rim than the Atlantic. They live proli�ically in the jungle in tree canopy communities where they forage for their diet of fruits, insects, and greens. These busy, playful creatures communicate with a distinct chatter of whistles, trills and clicks, and live in family groups where both parents participate in the raising of the young.

These tamarins are tree dwellers, but do come down from the treetops more frequently than many other primates. Their enemies in the jungle range from raptor birds, to cats and snakes. Not considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), they are classi�ied in the category of “Least Concern”, a testament to their hardiness and adaptability. While not endangered, they have the protections that all wild animals are afforded in Panama. Unfortunately, their endearing appearance is a liabil-

Bajo en calorías, rico en vitaminas y antioxidantes, fácil de conseguir y preparar…muy económico. Este increíble fruto con forma de pera, originario de la mezo América, ya era conocido y consumido por los mayas y los aztecas y también en toda la zona de América Central y el norte de Sudamérica.

El nombre chayote en náhuatl (chayotli) quiere decir calabaza espinosa; en Venezuela se conoce como chayota; en Perú se le llama cayota y calabacilla; en Guatemala y El Salvador se le conoce como güisquil; en Panamá, Nicaragua y Costa Rica se llama chayote; en Honduras pataste, en Colombia guatila y en Brasil se le llama xuxú. También en los Estados Unidos es consumido gracias a la gran cantidad de inmigrantes de Centro América, y es conocido como chow chow.

Para prepararlos basta con hervirlos y agregarles un poco de mantequilla y queso. Pero también ha demostrado ser versátil en la preparación de sopas, guisos, rellenos y hasta ensaladas. La próxima vez que vea un chayote en el supermercado, sonríale, llévelo a casa y disfrútelo. Su cuerpo, su paladar y su bolsillo se lo agradecerán.

Chayote is low in calories, but rich in vitamins and antioxidants.

It is readily available, inexpensive, and easy to prepare. This incredible pear shaped vegetable originated in indigenous America and was cooked and consumed by the Mayas, the Aztecs, and all the indigenous people throughout Central America and upper South America.

The name chayote comes from náhuatl i (chayotli) and means “spiny squash.” In Venezula, Panama, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, it is called chayote; in Peru, cayota or cabecilla; in Guatemala and El Salvador, güisquil; in Honduras, pataste; guatila in Colombia; and in Brazil, it is called xuxú. Chayote was introduced by the Central American immigrants to the U.S and is known there as chow chow.

Boiling it and adding butter and cheese is really enough preparation but this versatile fruit can be prepared many different ways. It is delicious in soups, stews, stuffed or in salads. The next time you see a chayote at the market, smile at it, pick it up, take it home, and enjoy it. Your body, your taste buds and your wallet will be grateful.

Ingredients:

2 chayotes grandes pelados, cocidos (tiernas pero firme) y picados en tiras.

3 huevos duros picados en cuartos, a lo largo.

1 pimiento rojo picado en cuadritos. ¼ lb. de queso nacional en tiras delgadas. ½ cebolla roja picada en cuadritos finos.

1 taza de aceite de oliva.

1 macito de perejil picadito. ¼ taza de vinagre de vino blanco.

1 pizca de azúcar. c/n de sal y pimienta negra recién molida.

2 large chayotes, peeled and boiled until firm but tender, then cut into ¼ x 2 inch strips 3 hard boiled eggs cut lengthwise into eighths 1 sweet red pepper chopped ¼ lb. national cheese (farmer’s cheese) cut in strips equal in size to the chayote strips ½ red onion finely julienned A handful of parsley finely chopped 1 cup olive oil A dash of sugar Salt and freshly ground pepper

Procedimiento: Preparar una vinagreta mezclando el aceite de oliva, vinagre, azúcar, sal y pimienta. Emulsionar y agregar los pimientos, la cebolla y el perejil. Reservar.

En un envase colocar el chayote y el queso y mezclar con cuidado.

Viértale la vinagreta e integre bien. Sirva en una fuente bonita, decorada con los huevos. Guarnición de varios palitos enjaretados con jamón serrano. Servir frío.
