Bajan, suben y el crucero parte hacia las Antillas Holandesas. La primera es Aruba, pequeña, arenosa, llena de cactus que le dan un ambiente exótico. Playas, hoteles, la isla vive del turismo y tiene una población que habla inglés, español y papiamento.

Las noches en el barco son alegres, puede cenar en un salón de gala o en un restaurante más casual, las discotecas y los espectáculos ofrecen artistas y música en vivo.

Al amanecer la emoción de llegar a Curazao sacude todo el crucero. Es la isla mayor y se puede caminar al puerto de Willemstad y cruzar el puente movible con un boulevard de rica arquitectura colonial, que al igual que Cartagena es patrimonio de la humanidad.

La última isla es Bonaire. Es un paraíso para el buceo; desde los muelles de su calle principal salen giras a diferentes puntos. 2,500 passengers enjoying the many restaurants, discos, ballrooms, casinos and pools. Nights on the ship are exciting occasions where one can dine in a fancy dining hall or in a more casual restaurant, followed up by going to a disco or a show featuring live artists and musicians.

On its return, the cruise ship visits the Dutch Antilles. The first stop is Aruba, small, sandy and full of cacti, which gives it an exotic feel.

At dawn, excitement for the arrival to Curacao resonates throughout the cruise ship. This is the largest island. One can walk to the Willemstad port and cross the swing bridge which boasts a boulevard rich in colonial architecture. Similar to Cartagena, it is a World Heritage site.

The last island is Bonaire. It is a diver’s paradise with tours to diving spots departing from its main street. On the way to the beach there are wild goats and pink flamencos, and later, beaches with turquoise-colored water and bathers from all over the world battling the sun’s rays with ice cold beers.

The 7 day journey concludes with passengers returning to Panama, visiting the Canal, traveling by train from one ocean to another and shopping in huge malls. WOW! In less that one hour tourists can be at the Pacific Ocean thanks to a super new highway that runs through the isthmus. A cruise this fun can only be found in Panama.

Surcada por 15 ríos puros que riegan valles y quebradas, Coiba es la mayor, la más virgen, despoblada e intacta isla de la región centroamericana; atributos que sumados a los tesoros ocultos en el archipiélago hicieron posible su denominación, en el año 2005, como sitio de Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO. En la actualidad, luego de haberse logrado este prestigioso status, el nivel de conservación ha mejorado considerablemente con la elaboración de un serio plan de manejo, el cual es liderado por el Instituto Smithsonian de Investigaciones Tropicales con sede en Panamá.

El área marina tiene la tasa más alta de endemismo; más que ningún otro lugar equivalente en los mares del planetaseñala Juan Maté, biólogo del Instituto Smithsonian a cargo de elaborar el plan de manejo. “Es fascinante, aquí el 90% de los moluscos y al menos el 80% de los peces son únicos.

Hemos censado 18 especies de corales, de los cuales, el 17% son endémicos”, afirma el científico panameño.

Grandes extensiones de mar turquesa, espléndido y productivo, hospedan al tiburón ballena, la manta raya, el merlín, el pez vela, la tuna de aleta amarilla, más de sesenta especies de peces, además de la ballena jorobada, la orca, el delfín moteado tropical y el delfín mular.

Parte de la fama de Coiba ha sido generada en pasadas décadas por sus tiburones, principalmente por los temidos tiburón tigre y tiburón toro, entre otros de estos seres magníficos, los mayores depredadores y reguladores ecológicos por excelencia, que han mantenido el equilibrio y la salud de los mares por más de 400 millones de años; incluso antes de la desaparición de los dinosaurios.

Virgin, unpopulated, intact, and boasting a trove of hidden treasures, Coiba is the largest island in the Central American region.

In recognition of its uniqueness, UNESCO declared it a World Patrimony Site in 2005. After achieving this prestigious position, a serious and aggressive conservation management plan for Coiba was developed, to be managed by the Smithsonian’s Tropical Research Institute (STRI) in Panama and, as a result, the island’s level of conservation has considerably improved.

No other sea on earth has the level of endemic creatures as those found in the waters of Coiba. “It is fascinating. Here, 90% of the mollusks and at least 80% of the fish are unique.

Our census includes 18 species of coral of which 17% are endemic,” says Juan Mate, a Panamanian biologist charged with the development and management of the area.

Vast turquoise seas, splendid and productive, are a refuge for sharks, whales, rays, marlin, sailfish, and yellow finned tuna; actually, 70 species of fish are found in Coiba’s waters, as well as Orcas, Humpbacked whales, brindled dolphin, and bottle nosed dolphin.

Part of Coiba’s fame in the last few decades can be attributed to its shark population, principally the fearsome tiger and bull varieties which, with magnificent others of their kind, have maintained the health and equilibrium of the seas for 400 million years. Ecological regulators, they have excelled at their task since before the dinosaurs disappeared.

Durante la época en que Coiba fue un penal los tiburones abundaban, hecho que hacía casi imposible huir de la isla. Pero en los últimos tiempos la merma ha sido grave y su supervivencia nunca había estado en peligro como hasta ahora.

La acción de las pesquerías también se ha dejado sentir en Coiba.

Marcos Ostrander de la Fundación CONAMAR ha visto la evolución de esta crisis.

-Yo realicé buceos en la época en que el mar de Coiba tenía muchos tiburones; hoy se ven pero con dificultad. Es triste, porque un tiburón nadando en un arrecife panameño es mucho más valioso que muerto, ya que ofrece un atractivo importante para el negocio del buceo recreativo- señala Ostrander.

A pesar de la crisis de los tiburones, Héctor Guzmán del Instituto Smithsonian de Investigaciones Tropicales, considera que la Reserva Marina de Coiba sigue siendo la joya de la región. “Los datos que hemos obtenido confirman que posee la mayor biodiversidad del Pacífico centroamericano, con 1700 hectáreas de arrecifes coralinos, y con un altísimo nivel de endemismo. Mi equipo descubrió el año pasado 12 especies de corales nuevos para la ciencia, en la Bahía de las Damas, uno de los más espectaculares arrecifes coralinos del archipiélago”, dice Guzmán.

Los corales cumplen una función elemental dentro de la zona costera, hacen las veces de un enorme vivero con gran cantidad de especies comerciales; son como una vivienda.

“Allí es donde básicamente se asientan las larvas, crecen, se desarrollan; posteriormente, algunas de estas especies se transforman en especies pelágicas y van a mar abierto. Por otro lado tienen una importancia de tipo medicinal, ya que gran cantidad de productos se extraen de los corales o de la fauna y flora asociada a los arrecifes coralinos, y estos compuestos tienen una gran utilidad para el desarrollo de medicinas con potencial para curar enfermedades que nos afectan, cómo el cáncer”, explica el biólogo marino del Smithsonian.

Sharks abounded during the period that Coiba served as a penal colony, making escape from the island almost impossible. In recent years, their population has markedly diminished and their survival has never been in such grave danger. Commercial fishing has also taken its toll in Coiba. Marcos Ostrander has watched the evolution of this crisis.

“I dove in Coiba’s waters when there were many sharks; today they can still be seen, but with great difficulty,” he says.

In spite of the shark crisis, Hector Guzman of STRI, still considers the marine reserve at Coiba to be one of the area’s precious jewels. “Our data confirms that, with 1700 hectares of coral and a high endemic level, it possesses the greatest biodiversity in the Central American Pacific. Last year my team discovered 12 new species of coral in the Bahia de las Damas (Damas Bay) at one of the most spectacular coral reefs in the archipelago.

Coral has an elementary function in the coastal zone; it acts as a giant underwater nursery, housing great quantities of commercial fish. “It is here where the larvae abide, grow and transform into pelagic species that finally head out to open sea. They also have an importance in medicine as a great number of products are extracted from coral or the flora and fauna associated with coral reefs. These compounds are widely utilized for the development of medicines with the potential to cure diseases like cancer,” explains the Smithsonian’s marine biologist.

“You must take into account that in the Golfo de Chiriqui (Gulf of Chiriqui) there are upwards of 75 species of hard and soft coral and, of these, at least 60 are in the protected area of Coiba; this gives it an intrinsic value in the Golfo de Chiriqui,” adds Guzman.

George Hanily, media director of the Albatross Foundation, believes that “these coral reefs act as reproduction centers for gametes and coral larvae that are then dispersed into the marine currents. Like a powerful underwater river, the Panama current that runs southwest veers off to the Galapagos Islands located 100km off the continent in Ecuador.”

El Parque Nacional Coiba y su Reserva Marina Especial, que suman un total de 430.800 hectáreas salvajes, poseen tres de los ecosistemas más productivos del planeta: manglar, arrecife coralino y selva tropical. Parte de su extraordinaria riqueza natural consiste en que está cubierta por un 80 por ciento de bosques primarios, hogar de especies en peligro de extinción.

Además de la guacamaya escarlata, el parque hospeda una fauna endémica muy especial, cómo el águila encrestada, el ñeque -o aguti- de Coiba, y una especie única de mono aullador. En total se han registrado 36 especies de mamíferos, 147 de aves y 39 especies de anfibios y reptiles.

Mucho antes de que los primeros faraones construyeran las pirámides de Egipto ya existían estos arrecifes coralinos en Coiba. Son tan antiguos que se han convertido en los más grandes en extensión de todo el Pacífico Tropical Oriental. Con poblaciones verticales de 10 a 12 metros y edades máximas de 5,600 años, se asemejan a una ciudad submarina.

The Parque Nacional de Coiba and Reserva Marina Especial (The Coiba National Park and Special Marine Reserve) is a primitive area of 430,800 hectares which encompass three of the most productive ecosystems on the planet -- mangroves, coral reefs and tropical jungles. Its virgin forests, home to endangered species, cover 80% of the island and are an important component of its natural wealth.

The park shelters many endemic species such as the crested eagle, a Coiba ñequi or aguti, and a specie of howler monkey exclusive to the island, as well as the beautiful scarlet macaw All together, 36 species of mammals, 147 species of birds, and 39 species of amphibians and reptiles have been registered on the island.

The ancient coral reefs of Coiba existed long before the pharaohs built the pyramids of Egypt and, resembling a submerged city, they date back 5,600 years. With vertical populations of 10 to 12 meters, they are the largest in the eastern tropical Pacific.

“Hay que señalar que en el golfo de Chiriquí tenemos aproximadamente más de 75 especies de corales duros y corales blandos, y de esas, al menos 60 especies están dentro del área protegida de Coiba; eso le da un valor intrínseco dentro del golfo de Chiriquí”, agrega Guzmán.

Para George Hanily, Director Ejecutivo de la Fundación Albatros Media, “estos arrecifes coralinos actúan como sitios de reproducción de gametos y larvas coralinas que se dispersan con las corrientes marinas, como la Corriente de Panamá, que corre como un poderoso río submarino hacia el sudoeste y luego toma rumbo hacia las lejanas islas Galápagos, ubicadas a más de 1000 kilómetros del continente, en Ecuador”.

Sumado al efecto de ésta corriente milagrosa, la temperatura estable del golfo de Chiriquí, donde se sitúa Coiba, propicia la supervivencia coralina y garantiza la producción de larvas, como una fuente permanente de vida para el repoblamiento de otros arrecifes coralinos, como los de las islas Galápagos, o de otros archipiélagos del Corredor Marino del Pacífico Tropical Orientalafirma Hanily Se sabe que tres especies de corales, Porites lobata, Pavona clavus y Pavona gigantea, existen tanto en Galápagos como en el Golfo de Chiriquí, lo que hace suponer la milagrosa conectividad. Durante el fenómeno del Niño, en 1983, en las Galápagos, las temperaturas subieron 3°C, o más, y la mortalidad coralina fue mayor al 90%. Mientras tanto, en el golfo de Chiriquí, la temperatura subió menos y la mortalidad coralina fue del 70 %, la más baja de la región del Pacífico Tropical Oriental. Esto lleva a la conclusión de que Coiba viene a hacer las veces de sala de maternidad, una fuente permanente de vida que beneficia a otras islas -conectadas entre sí- por las corrientes marinas.

Por ello, Coiba es considerada la pieza fundamental del corredor marino que conecta ecosistemas insulares de Centroamérica y Sudamérica. Los mares que rodean el archipiélago son un laboratorio viviente, y sus especies, una suerte de bibliotecas vivas que poseen compuestos químicos útiles para la cura de enfermedades como la malaria y el cáncer.

He also affirms that “as well as this miraculous current, the stable water temperature of the Golfo de Chiriqui, where Coiba is situated, propagates the survivorship of the coral and guarantees the production of larva. It is a permanent fountain of life for the repopulation of other coral reefs such as those in the Galapagos and other islands in the tropical eastern Pacific.”

In support of the miraculous concept of connectivity, it is known that three species of coral, Porites lobata, Pavona clavus, and Pavona gigantean exist in the Galapagos, as well as in the Golfo de Chiriqui. During the 1983 El Niño weather phenomena, water temperatures in the Galapagos warmed three degrees centigrade and the coral mortality was above 90% , while the temperature rise in Golfo de Chiriqui was less with a coral mortality of 70%, the lowest in the eastern tropical Pacific region. The conclusion?

Coiba is the maternity ward, a permanent source of life that benefits the islands connected to each other by marine currents.

As such, Coiba is considered the fundamental piece of the marine highway that joins insular eco-systems of Central and South America. The seas that surround it are a living laboratory, a library of useful chemical compounds that cure sicknesses such as cancer and malaria.

Durante siglos, los mamíferos marinos, al igual que otras especies, han sido utilizados desmedidamente por el hombre para usar su piel, su carne y su aceite. Tal fue el daño causado a estos grupos, que actualmente un buen número de ellas se encuentran protegidas por convenios internacionales y leyes nacionales para evitar su extinción en el planeta.

Uno de los mamíferos marinos son las ballenas, que pertenecen al orden Cetácea, palabra proveniente del griego ketos (ballena) y del latín cetus (monstruo marino). Son consideradas los mamíferos más grandes del mundo capacitados para vivir en el mar. La mayoría de las formas modernas de ballenas y delfines están presentes desde hace unos 12 millones de años, y las mas antiguas como los cachalotes existen desde hace 23 millones de años.

For centuries marine mammals, like other species, have been indiscriminately used by man for their skins, meat and oil. Because of the abuse on these animals, many of them are now protected with international law agreements set to prevent their final extinction from the planet.

Whales are one of the protected marine groups. They belong to the scientific order Cetacean, a word derived from the Greek word ketos (whale), and the Latin cetus, meaning marine monster. They are the largest mammals in the world. Most modern whales and dolphins have been around for about 12 million years. The more ancient, like sperm whales, have been around for about 23 million years.

Las aguas del Parque Nacional Coiba periódicamente reciben la visita de mamíferos marinos, las especies más frecuentes son: delfín moteado tropical, orca y ballena jorobada.

La ballena jorobada (Megaptera novaeangliae) es considerada una especie migratoria, es decir, que viaja miles de kilómetros hasta las regiones tropicales para parir y criar a sus ballenatos.

En el Parque de Coiba llegan poblaciones de jorobadas procedentes del hemisferio norte y del hemisferio sur. Esta migración la realizan individualmente o en grupos de 2 a 3 individuos, pero en áreas de alimentación o reproducción se pueden apreciar grupos de hasta 15 individuos. Una forma de distinguir la hembra del macho es por su tamaño, generalmente ellas son mas grandes.

La ballena jorobada se puede distinguir por su comportamiento característico, su “salto acrobático” sobre el agua, levantando la aleta caudal (cola) y las pectorales (aletas laterales) fuera del agua, para luego caer de espaldas golpeando las pectorales contra el agua.

No obstante, debemos conocer que las ballenas tienen una función importante en el ecosistema marino, ellas se ubican en la parte final de la cadena alimenticia, siendo uno de los depredadores más grandes en el mar. Contribuyen de esta manera a mantener el equilibrio entre las poblaciones que allí viven, pues al alimentarse de otros peces ayudan a eliminar peces enfermos o con limitaciones, que ponen en riesgo a su especie.

Actualmente se está educando a la población para que sean protectores de estos animales marinos. Realmente el beneficio que pueden aportar al ecosistema marino es invaluable, y para la economía de las comunidades costeras representa un ingreso. El avistamiento de ballenas es una actividad que se desarrolla desde hace años; hoy en día en Panamá contamos con la orientación de expertos que nos explican como otras comunidades han sabido desarrollar esta actividad y reciben un ingreso adicional. Los turistas prefieren disfrutar al observar estos enormes animales en su hábitat natural, conocer sobre ellas, lo que da lugar al desarrollo sostenible donde el hombre se beneficia de los recursos que ofrece la naturaleza sin afectar su ambiente.

The waters surrounding Coiba Island are periodically visited by whales and dolphins. The most frequent visitors are the tropical brindled dolphin, the orca and the humpback whale.

The humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a migratory species that travels thousands of kilometers to tropical waters in order to give birth and tend to their calves. The humpbacks that migrate to the Coiba Marine Park arrive here from North and South America, and they come both individually or in pods of two or three. In feeding beds you might find groups of up to fifteen.

Males and females differ in size, the female generally being the larger.

Humpbacks are recognizable by their characteristic signature act, an acrobatic jump where they leap completely out of the water and then fall back and slap it with their pectoral fins.

Whales serve an important function in the marine eco-system. Because they are the largest animal in the sea and at the end of the food chain, they help maintain the equilibrium by consuming weak specimens that endanger their species. Their contribution to the system is invaluable.

We now educate people to be protectors of these marine creatures.

They can be hugely beneficial to the ecosystem, and in turn, whales help the economies of coastal communities. Whale watching has become increasingly popular over the years. Currently, there is a group of experts here educating and training communities to properly develop whale watching programs. The financial successes of other communities in the world have served as an example.

Tourists prefer to enjoy and observe these magnificent beasts where they live. Here, they can watch and learn about them in their natural habitat. From this beginning, a sustainable relationship can grow where man can reap rewards from nature without harming it.

La ballena jorobada carece de dientes, en su lugar posee unas “barbas” que son láminas flexibles por las cuales filtra su alimento que consiste en crustáceos, arenques, cardúmenes de peces, camarones y plancton.

In place of teeth, humpbacks have baleen. These are comb-like, flexible plates that serve as a filter to trap their food. They feed on crustaceans, herring, shrimp, fish and plankton.

Es una especie que se encuentra en todos los mares tanto en zonas tropicales como zonas polares. Podemos observar estas ballenas en aguas muy cercanas a las costas, insulares y oceánicas, siempre y cuando sean aguas limpias.

This species is found in all the seas and oceans of the world. From the tropics to the polar regions, these whales can be seen in clean, shallow coastal waters.

Una ballena jorobada adulta puede medir hasta 17 metros de longitud y pesar desde 24 hasta 40 toneladas.

An adult can measure up to 17 meters long and weigh from 24 to 40 tons. Its body is black or gray, with the exception of the underside area between its throat and belly, which is lighter.

La velocidad que puede alcanzar una de estas ballenas es de aproximadamente 12 km/h y realiza inmersiones de hasta 20 minutos. Cuando se ha sumergido durante mucho tiempo, al emerger a la superficie, emite una exhalación, un enorme y potente soplo de aire y vapor de agua que sale de los pulmones a través del espiráculo o nariz (orificio que tiene sobre la cabeza); este soplo de agua puede alcanzar hasta 3 metros de altura. También cuando se alimenta puede emitir estas exhalaciones de agua que forman un chorro más alto y angosto.

Su cuerpo es de color negro o gris, a excepción de la región entre la garganta y el vientre, que es clara. Su cabeza es aplanada y en el extremo de la misma tiene unas protuberancias o verrugas donde se alojan parásitos como piojos de ballena (cirrípedos) y crustáceos.

Su aleta dorsal es pequeña, ubicada en el tercio posterior del cuerpo e incluye una joroba (de allí su nombre común). Las aletas pectorales son grandes y representan una tercera parte de la longitud del cuerpo. La aleta caudal es delgada, con forma triangular y aserrada en el borde posterior. La forma de la cola y la aleta es única de cada individuo, es como el ADN de cada persona.

They travel at approximately 12km per hour and can stay underwater for up to 20 minutes. When surfacing, after being submerged for an extensive period, they exhale dramatically through the orifice on top of their head that serves as a nose. This exhalation, a combination of water, vapor and air, serves to clean the water out of their lungs and can reach 3 meters high.

The head is flat, and its edges have wart-like protrusions that shelter parasites and crustaceans. In the last third of the body there is a small dorsal fin and a hump, from which it derives its name. The pectoral fins are about equal to one third of the whale’s length.

The caudal fin is thin, triangular shaped and has a serrated edge.

The shape of the tail and the fin are unique to each individual whale, similar to DNA in humans.

En los sitios de reproducción generalmente se congregan varias ballenas, muy activas, con alguna frecuencia pueden tener comportamientos agresivos. También es común que realicen cantos y maniobras acrobáticas como saltos, aletazos y coletazos; estas son maneras de atraerse entre ellas.

La hembra alcanza la madurez sexual a los 6 años de edad, generalmente cada dos años tiene sus crías y su periodo de gestación dura 12 meses. Pare una sola cría (ballenato) que al nacer mide 3.5 metros y pesa 1.5 toneladas aproximadamente, y se desteta a los 1012 meses. Los periodos en los cuales se pueden observar ballenas en Panamá son durante los meses de febrero y marzo, y desde julio hasta septiembre. Posiblemente, las primeras sean provenientes del norte y durante el segundo periodo nos visiten poblaciones del sur. La migración inicia cuando las aguas de su hábitat natural se enfrian demasiado, lo que las obliga a buscar aguas cálidas donde puedan realizar sus procesos biológicos como copular, parir sus crías y enseñarles a alimentarse y protegerse.

Las yubartas o ballenas Jorobadas son longevas, alcanzan a vivir entre 50 y 60 años. La causa de mortandad de la ballena jorobada puede ser por muerte natural, predación por tiburones u otras ballenas como la orca, por efecto de grandes embarcaciones que les causan laceraciones y mutilaciones, y en otros países son capturadas por los barcos balleneros. Otra de las causas son las aguas contaminadas, principalmente para las ballenas filtradoras, quienes abren su boca para capturar agua e ingerir lo que queda atrapado en las fibras de su boca. Esto pone en peligro sus vidas, pues ellas durante el proceso de alimentación pueden ingerir latas, bolsas plásticas y otros desperdicios que se encuentren en el mar.

When these whales gather to reproduce they become very active at the reproduction sights, and it is not uncommon for them to become aggressive. In order to attract one another, they often sing and perform acrobatics, like jumps, tail slapping and fin slapping.

Females reach sexual maturity at six years, gestation lasts 12 months and they generally produce offspring every two years.

They give birth to single calves that weigh approximately 1.5 tons and measure 3.5 meters. The calves are weaned at around 10-12 months.

Whales can be seen in Panama during the months of February and March then again from July to September. The first cycle appears to come from the north and the second from the south. They migrate here when the waters of their natural habitats cool. They seek warmer waters where they fulfill their biological instincts such as copulation, birth, and raising their young, while also protecting them and teaching them how to feed.

Humpbacks have a life span of 50 to 60 years. Old age, disease, shark or orca predators and lacerations caused by ship’s propellers, are among the causes often responsible for their mortality.

Contaminated waters are also a great danger to baleen whales.

Those that filter water through their mouths sometimes ingest cans, plastic bags and other trash found in the sea.

La fotografía de aves es una actividad que muchas personas en Panamá han empezado a practicar, ya sea por el aprecio que le tienen a estos animales y promover su conservación, al igual que sentirse en paz con la naturaleza. Panamá y su riqueza de fauna invitan tanto a los mismos panameños como a extranjeros a explorar sus bosques y apreciar las exóticas especies de aves que sólo aquí se encuentran.

La sociedad Audubon en Panamá promueve muchas actividades relacionadas con la observación de aves y la fotografía de estas.

Dentro de las tantas actividades que organizan está el concurso de fotografía digital, del cual tuvimos la oportunidad de entrevistar a uno de sus ganadores, el señor Rafael Luck.

Bird photography is becoming popular in Panama. It is a hobby enjoyed by conservationists and bird enthusiasts, as well as those who simply find peace in nature. Panama, with its rich fauna, lures Panamanians and foreigners to explore its forests and admire all the exotic species of birds found here.

The Audubon Society in Panama promotes many bird related activities for bird photography. Among these is the digital photo contest where we had the opportunity to interview Mr. Rafael Luck.

¿Cómo empezó en esto? ¿Qué lo llevo a meterse en este hobbie?

Hace 4 años vino un primo de España que era fotógrafo de aves. Tenía un equipo muy sofisticado de fotografía y me pidió que lo llevara a tomar fotos de aves. Yo no tenía la más mínima idea de lo que era un ave o fotografiar un ave, así que me las ingenié para llevarlo a un par de lugares muy básicos. En realidad fue ahí cuando me di cuenta de la cantidad y variedad de aves tan bonitas que hay en Panamá.

Cuando empecé con este hobbie me di cuenta de lo bellas que son algunas y que nunca les había prestado atención. Servir de guía a mi primo fue lo que hizo que me iniciara en este hobbie.

El hobby lo empecé de cero. Para fotografiar aves hay que aprender sobre aves, identificarlas, a ellas y sus hábitats. Yo no sabía absolutamente nada, jamás tomé un curso de aves, pero leí mucho sobre gente que las fotografía. El otro problema con el que me enfrenté fue la falta de conocimiento de cámaras. Obtuve ayuda de muchos amigos fotógrafos. Cuando empecé me resultó un poco difícil; fui aprendiendo rápidamente porque me vinculé a Audubon. A la vez que iba creciendo como observador de aves, iba creciendo como fotógrafo. Aún me falta mucho por aprender, hay que aprender sobre ellas viéndoles y escuchándoles. ¿Hasta el momento qué le parece el hobbie?¿Ha aprendido sobre otras cosas relacionadas?

Este hobbie es muy completo ya que involucra muchas facetas. Es un hobby que te lleva a conocer toda la república. Todos los puntos más escondidos, montañas y playas, todos los lugares donde se pueden encontrar bellas aves.

La exploración, el hiking, el camping, todo forma parte de fotografiar aves. Es un hobbie muy completo que te lleva a mantener un estrecho vinculo con la naturaleza y conocer a fondo todos los lugares de Panamá.

Serían como cuatro hobbies en uno solo: observación de aves, manejo de fotografía, contacto con la naturaleza, y el manejo de los programas de computadora para editar las fotos. En este último tampoco tenía instrucción de cómo usar este tipo de programas.

When did you start, and what led you to this hobby?

Four years ago, a cousin who is a bird photographer came to visit from Spain. He brought a lot of sophisticated equipment, and he wanted to go out and take photos. I had no idea about birds and fewer ideas about bird photography, so I took him along to the most basic places. This was the moment when I realized how many beautiful birds we have in Panama. There are over 1000 different species, and I began to be more conscious of how many pretty birds I had never noticed before. I started as my cousin’s guide. Four years ago, I got underway by buying the basic equipment. My first photos … were terrible.

I started from zero. To photograph birds you have to know something about them, identify them and know about their habitats. I knew absolutely nothing. I had never taken a course about birds, but I did read a lot about those who photograph them. My other problem … I had a lack of knowledge about cameras.

My start up was difficult, but I joined Audubon and I quickly began to learn a lot. As I began to grow as a bird watcher, I also grew as a bird photographer. Although I still have much to learn, I know where to learn it … watching and listening to my subjects.

Are you content with your hobby, and have you learned anything additional from it?

This is a very complete and multifaceted hobby. Besides learning about birds and photography, it has taken me all over the country.

I have been everywhere, and I intimately know the most remote spots, mountains, beaches and anywhere that beautiful birds can be found. There is an important relationship between nature and my hobby. It has also taught me about hiking, camping and exploring. These are all important facets. It is like having four hobbies in one: bird watching, photography, nature, and photo editing on the computer, a subject in which I previously had no instruction.

¿Qué nivel de complejidad tiene la fotografías de aves?

Específicamente la fotografía de aves es un tema que requiere de muchísima paciencia. Uno, las aves no son fáciles de ver.

Dos, no posan, son muy rápidas y algunas son extremadamente difíciles de fotografiar, y como en todo hobbie una dosis de suerte es necesaria para tomar la foto de un buen ave.

También es necesario tener el equipo necesario. Las aves son criaturas muy sensibles, en el sentido de que uno no puede acercarse demasiado. Son muy celosas, tímidas, y al menor movimiento se escapan y esconden. También es necesario tener buena luz y buena distancia. Se debe tener lentes con buen alcance.

Panamá es un país privilegiado en aves, no hay que ir muy lejos; desde el Parque Metropolitano donde hay cerca de 250 especies de aves, Punta Culebra, Summit, los lagos de Summit, Cerro Azul. La mayoría de mis fotos las tomo en excursiones de un solo día. Salgo en la mañana temprano entre las 5 y 5.30; ése es el único sacrificio que hay que hacer, levantarse temprano. La mayoría de las aves salen temprano en la mañana. Si vives en la capital, tienes lugares muy cercanos que visitar para fotografiar. ¿Cuál es tu ave favorito? ¿Cuál has disfrutado más fotografiar?

En general las rapaces son mis favoritas. Es muy difícil decidir, todas tienen su belleza y sus características. En particular la clorofonia de tierras altas de Chiriquí. Entre las rapaces que más me gustan está el caracara crestada. También me gustan el hormiguero ocelado y el rabijunco coliblanco.

How complex was it to take the award winning photographs?

Specifically, bird photography requires a lot of patience.

First of all, birds are not easy to see. Second, they do not pose. They are very quick, and some are very difficult to catch on film. Similar to many hobbies, a certain amount of luck is required to take a good bird photograph. Having the right equipment is also a must. Birds are very sensitive creatures, and it is difficult to get close. They are shy, jealous and ready to fly away and hide with minimal provocation. You also need good light, and good, relatively close range to capture all the details. Proximity is also an issue.

Panama is privileged because you do not have to go far to go birding. In the Parque Metropolitano (Metropolitan Park) there are around 250 species. Also near the city are Punta Culebra, Summit, the Summit lakes and Cerro Azul.

Most of my photos have been taken on one day excursions.

The only sacrifice I have to make is getting up early. I leave between 5 and 5.30 a.m. because birds are up early. If you live in the city, there are neighboring areas to see and photograph them.

Which is your favorite and which have you enjoyed photographing the most?

In general, the raptors are my favorites. It is difficult to decide … they are all beautiful and have their own characteristics. In particular, I like the clorophonia in the Chiriqui highlands. Among the raptors, the one I like most is the crested caracara. I also like the ocellated antbird and redbilled tropicbird.

¿Cuál es la próxima ave que quisieras fotografiar y que aún no encuentras?

Hay muchas que me gustaría fotografiar, sobre todo aquellas que se encuentran en la zona del Darién. Aunque he visitado la zona antes, es la zona que más me falta por explorar. Me gustaría fotografiar una especie de carpintero en Darién. Hay alrededor de 12 aves endémicas en Panamá, y de esas 12, tengo fotografiadas 8.

What bird would you like to find and photograph next?

There are many that I would like to photograph, especially those in the Darien. Although I have been there, it is the area that I have least explored. Exploring it is one of my objectives for 2010 and 2011. I would like to photograph a species of woodpecker found in Darien. There are twelve species of birds endemic to Panama. I have photographed eight.

Kinkajou La Martilla

El sol se oculta y unos ojos nocturnos aparecen desde un recóndito rincón de la selva. Dejando atrás las horas de sueño, la martilla comienza su aventura. La luz de la luna acaricia su densa piel bronce. La martilla es conocida también como cuchumbí o kinkajú, y ha sido visto por muy pocos.

Mientras colaboraba con National Geographic en el 2003, Mattias Klum preguntó a los panameños acerca del kinkajú. Muchos respondieron, “¿qué?…¿kinkajú?” Como la mayoría de las personas, ellos no sabían de qué animal estaba hablando. Se sabe muy poco sobre el kinkajú, y son pocas las personas que han logrado fotografiarlo en su hábitat natural; Klum aportó increíbles investigaciones y fotografías.

Al leer los apuntes de Klum queda claro que estaba completamente cautivado por la martilla, el cual calificó como “totalmente encantador”. Klum se preguntaba por qué había tan poco interés en investigar la martilla, aparte del increíble trabajo de Roland Kays de 1996. El artículo de Kays y su coautor J.L. Gittleman, “La organización social de la martilla Potos flavus (Procyonidae)”, publicado en el Journal of Zoology en el 2001, es el resultado de sus estudios en el Parque Nacional Soberanía en Panamá; vale la pena leerlo.

Forma parte del grupo Potos flavus, familia Procyonidae (como los mapaches y sus parientes); la martilla tiene unas características muy distintivas, y por un tiempo fueron considerados primates como los lémures, Lemur flavus. La martilla habita en los árboles y posee varias características de adaptación comunes de especies arbóreas, como una cola larga y flexible, garras y patas reversibles. Parecen carnívoros, pero se alimentan principalmente de néctar, higos e insectos pequeños. Su curiosa y larga lengua funciona como la herramienta perfecta para adquirir néctar.

Usando ADN y rastreo por radiofrecuencia - y siguiendo las “pistas” por horas de horas junto con una linterna y binoculares-, Kays descubrió una inusual estructura social. Una hembra, dos machos, un sub-adulto y un joven que típicamente componen una

While on assignment for National Geographic in 2003, Mattias Klum asked Panamanians about Kinkajous. Most replied, “what …

Kinkajous?” Like most people, they didn’t know what he was talking about. Very little is known about Kinkajous, and hardly anyone has ever photographed them in the wild. Klum provided groundbreaking research and photographs.

It is clear from Klum’s notes that he was completely captivated by the Kinkajou which he classified as “utterly charming.” He wondered why there has been so little research interest in the Kinkajou, apart from the groundbreaking work done by Roland Kays in 1996. Kays’ article in the Journal of Zoology, The Social Organization of the Kinkajou Potos flavus (Procyonidae), coauthored with J.L. Gittleman in 2001, is well worth the read, the result of his study in Panama’s Parque Nacional Soberania.

Part of the Potos flavus family Procyonidae (raccoons, coatis, and their relatives), Kinkajous have distinctive features that, at one time, were used to place them in the order primates as Lemur flavus.

Kinkajous are arboreal and possess many adaptations common to arboreal species, such as a long, fully prehensile tail, nimble clawed fingers, and fully reversible hind feet. They look like carnivores, but feed primarily on nectar, wild figs and small insects. There curi-

A diferencia de otros mamíferos, es la hembra la que abandona el hogar cuando alcanza la madurez sexual, alrededor de los dos años y medio. El territorio pasa de padres a hijos, y los machos desarrollan vínculos más fuertes y estables que las hembras. No viven en comunidades como los primates, pero sí se reúnen para pequeños encuentros que incluye asearse y acicalarse.

Vi mi primer martilla en 1985. Mi timbre sonó y cuando respondí estaba la hija pequeña de un vecino cargando una extraña criatura peluda. Mi respuesta inmediata fue, “¿qué es eso, puedo cargarlo?” Pensé, realmente existe el amor a primera vista; me emocioné un poco cuando lo cargué. Me quedé asombrada con su dorada piel, sus grandes ojos redondos, y sus redondas orejas que parecen conchas de mar. Enrolló su larga cola en mi cuello y acto seguido sacó su larga lengua.

Nuevamente pregunté, “¿qué es este animal y de dónde lo sacaste?” La niña respondió, “es una martilla y lo encontramos en Darién. A su madre la mataron y estaba siendo cuidada por una familia misionera”. Mis vecinos estaban ya abrumados por esta criatura nocturna, y así comenzó mi vida con el kinkajú. Le llamé Mo-Mo. Mi hijo mayor le construyó una casita, pero ella pasaba la mayor parte del tiempo fuera de la jaula, destruyendo mis adornos, bienes y aterrorizando a mi esposo e hijos. Using DNA and radiotracking—and following the “kinks” for neckcraning hours with flashlight and binoculars—Kays discovered an unusual social structure. A female, two males, a subadult, and a juvenile typically make up a family, sleeping together and grooming one another while usually foraging separately. Unlike most mammals, it is the female that leaves home when sexually mature, at about two and a half years. The turf passes from father to sons, and males develop stronger bonds than females. They don’t live in social groups like primates, but do meet up for brief encounters that include grooming.

I saw my first Kinkajou in 1985. My doorbell rang and, when I answered, there stood a neighbor’s little girl holding a strange looking bundle of fur. My immediate response -- “What is it and may I hold it?” There really is such a thing as love at first sight. I experienced a quiet thrill as I held her. I gazed at her golden fur, her big round eyes, and her rounded ears that looked like ridged sea shells inside.

She wrapped her long tail around my neck and promptly stuck out her very long tongue.

Again I asked, “what is this and where did you get her?” The little girl answered, “a Kinkajou and we got her in the Darien. Her mother was killed and she was being cared for by a missionary family.” My neighbors were already overwhelmed by this nocturnal creature and so began my life with a Kinkajou. I named her Mo-Mo. My oldest son built her a walk-in cage, but she spent a great deal of time indoors, destroying my household goods and terrorizing my hus-

band and sons. She was a rough little thing. I have often read that Kinkajous make good pets. I did not find that to be the case. They are wild and should live free, high in the treetops of rain forests.

I eventually moved her to a jungle teaching zoo with two other Kinkajous. When they escaped and Mo stayed I had to find another home for her when I left Panama. I hold the hope that she is well and happy on an island in Gatun Lake.

¿Quiénes fueron tus mentores y qué te llevo a escoger el jazz?

Soy una ensalada de influencias. Mi papá es el primero. El profesor Edgardo Quintero, Cecilia Núñez, lo máximo. También Alexis Castillo, Pipo Navarro, Víctor Boa, Arístides Valderrama, Papo Lucca, Bud Powell, Wayne Shorter. No quiero dejar por fuera a mi madre que también me ha ayudado mucho.

Algo que marcó mi inicio en el jazz fue cuando tenía 7 años; mientras jugábamos baseball, un vecino puso un disco de Louis Armstrong y sentí una esencia personal, como una persona hablando a través de un instrumento, “y le pregunto ¿qué es eso?, y me dice eso es jazz, jazz es improvisación”. Ese día también escuché a Papo Lucca; después descubrí a grandes jazzistas panameños.

Danilo Perez, composer, musician, philanthropist, cultural ambassador and dream generator for many aspiring musicians, pillar of the foundation which carries his name, spoke to us not only about the Jazz Festival, but also about his goals, values and dreams.

Who were your mentors, and what lead you to jazz?

I have been influenced by many; most importantly my father, but also, professor Edgardo Quintero and Cecilia Núñez … the “best”. I would like to mention Alexis Castillo, Pipo Navarro, Víctor Boa, Arístides Valderrama, Papo Lucca, Bud Powell, and Wayne Shorter. Of course, I can’t leave my mother out. She’s helped me a lot.

My interest in jazz probably started when I was seven years old. I was playing baseball, and a neighbor was listening to a Louis Armstrong record that went to my core. I asked myself, how can somebody speak through an instrument? And then I asked my neighbor, “What is that?” He answered, “Its jazz. Jazz is improvisation.” That same day, I listened to Papo Lucca and later discovered great Panamanian jazz musicians. “What I most like about jazz is abandoning the norm … saying ‘no’ to routine.”

¿Cuáles son tus influencias musicales?

Influencias de música clásica como Bach, Beethoven, y todo lo que es improvisación, nada planeado.

Who are your musical influences?

Classical music greats like Bach, Beethoven and all improvisers. ¿Qué resultados has visto a través de los años de estar organizando el PJF? ¿Hacia dónde más se dirige esta iniciativa?

nace una necesidad más elevada, el gusto del público es mucho más refinado, por una música que no es fácil de escuchar a veces.

Mucha gente lo asimila de esa manera, tiene que ver más con la música como terapia.

En cuanto a las becas, ya hay resultados de muchachos que hace 7 años venían de un largo proceso. Este proyecto para mí es un bebé que está aprendiendo a caminar solo, y a hacerse auto sostenible, lo que simboliza que los muchachos que han salido de aquí sigan con el deseo de ser responsables. El público existe, como se ha probado desde los primeros eventos donde ya asistían 8000 personas, hasta las más de 20,000 que asisten ahora.

Esta es la pregunta que yo lanzo de vuelta, ¿qué creemos en realidad que está ocurriendo en el país, qué tan importante es para el panameño el evento? Quiero que crean que es posible que algo de esta magnitud esté pasando, que gente y estudiantes de otros países vengan a estudiar. Son muchos años de iniciativas independientes, que con persistencia se realizaron y ahora en retrospectiva parece un proceso más corto. Siempre pensé que había un público ávido por el jazz, Panamá como país tiene más jazzistas en la historia que cualquier otro país latinoamericano. ¿Qué crees que hace falta en el país para que la gente aprecie más este tipo de eventos?

Más educación y más historia. El problema es que la música sólo se percibe en la parte de entretenimiento, lo sensacionalista. Lo más importante es empezar con los niños, desde muy temprano crear programas de folclore y música, trabajar con ellos su autoestima y generar programas de cambio social, siempre apoyados en la música.

¿Qué cree que se debe mejorar en las escuelas con respecto a las clases de música? ¿Qué se debe implementar?

Al final del día, la Fundación no sólo busca crear grandes músicos que sean líderes, sino que encuentren valores para que se conviertan en personas relevantes en la sociedad, y a través de la música busquen el trabajo en equipo, la disciplina y todos los demás valores. Para mí, que eliminen una clase de música de la vida temprana de un niño es empezar con el pie torcido. Es curioso, porque lo primero que hace una madre para calmar a un niño es cantarle, practicando el valor de la tranquilidad. Sacando esto de la enseñanza escolar lo único que les queda a los niños es la rutina. ¿Por qué no usar la música como estrategia para aprender matemáticas, por ejemplo? Todo se puede integrar, desde promover valores hasta usar la música como recurso, cuidando siempre que no se convierta en una obligación.

¿Cuáles son algunos de tus futuros proyectos?

No sé cómo lo voy a hacer, pero uno de los proyectos y retos más lindos que tenemos es estar dirigiendo el Global Jazz Institute en Boston. A raíz de cómo estamos dirigiendo el proyecto en Panamá, Berklee ha visto una manera diferente de hacer las cosas y han abierto un Instituto para que se implementen y practiquen de igual manera. Éste es el próximo reto de mi vida. He logrado convencerlos de que hagan la apertura internacional aquí en Panamá. Este proceso tuvo una semana intensa de audiciones, 80 aplicaciones a nivel internacional; yo las escuché todas y de ahí salió Jahaziel Arrocha, por ejemplo. A través del Festival se ganó una Beca Presidencial, un cuarto de millón de dólares para ir a estudiar y ahora está en su tercer año. Así como él, hay muchos becarios, todos tienen historias conmovedoras; es tremendo honor.

of background events that have helped create it. Now, we have to raise the bar. Our public has become much more refined. They listen to music pieces that are not always easy listening, but now we need to move on to music as therapy.

Scholarships … It has been a long road, but after seven years, we are seeing the results. For me … this project is like a baby who is starting to walk by himself. The kids who have passed through the system have maintained their desire to be responsible. It is becoming sustainable.

What do we really believe is happening here? How important is this event for the average Panamanian? I know what I want. I want them to believe that something of this magnitude is happening, that foreign people and students want to come here to study.

Persistence is important; there have been many independent initiatives over the years that have been achieved through persistence. I always knew that Panama had an avid Jazz audience; Panama has produced more Jazz musicians than any other Latin-American country.

What do you think is needed to get more people interested in these kinds of events?

More early education and history; the problem is that music is only perceived as entertainment. It is very important to start at a young age, and create awareness through educational programs that focus on folklore and music. We must work on self esteem, and through this, generate social change.

How do you think that school based music programs can be improved, and how could change implemented?

At the end of the day, one of the foundation’s goals is not only to produce important musicians, leaders in the field, but also to raise value awareness. Music helps society find relevant values, especially teamwork and discipline. For me, the elimination of music in the classroom is like starting to walk with a twisted ankle. I find it curious, the first thing a mother does to calm a fretful child is sing, experiencing tranquility. If you remove music from the classroom, children are left with nothing but routine. Why not use music as a strategy for learning mathematics? Everything can be integrated, from promoting a value based society, to using music as a resource, but it should never be an obligation.

What projects do you have for the future?

I do not know how I am going to do it, but one of the most appealing projects is to direct the Global Jazz Institute in Boston. Much like we are doing here; Berklee sees and does things differently, and they have opened an institute where programs will be implemented and carried out. This is the next big goal in my life. I convinced them to do the international opening here in Panama.

It was an intense week of auditions. There were 80 international applications, and I listened to all of them. Jahziel Arrocha started this way. Through the festival he earned a Presidential scholarship of $250,000; he is now in his third year. Just like him, there are many scholarship students, all with touching stories; it is a tremendous honor.

En la ciudad de Panamá, el 2010 inició con las cálidas notas del jazz, que recorrieron desde el Centro Ascanio Arosemena de la ACP, el Teatro Anayansi de ATLAPA, hasta la legendaria Plaza Catedral en el barrio de San Felipe. Grandes y chicos, músicos y profesionales de todas las artes, turistas nacionales y extranjeros, artistas, participantes y público de más de veinte países se unieron para celebrar el Séptimo Panama Jazz Festival, el máximo evento cultural de la región.

2010 was ushered into Panama City with warm notes of jazz that resounded throughout the town, from the ACP’s Ascanio Arosemena Center and the Anayansi Theater at Atlapa, to the legendary Plaza Catedral in San Felipe. The VII annual Panama Jazz Festival, the region’s premier cultural event, was celebrated by young and old professionals and amateurs, musicians, artists, locals and foreigners alike, who gathered here from more than 20 countries to participate and enjoy the festival.

Con un total de 80 Clínicas Musicales, 40 Conciertos y seis días de intensas actividades musicales y culturales para todas las audiencias, el Panama Jazz Festival 2010 superó las expectativas.

Este año, Panamá fue testigo y protagonista de importantes acontecimientos en el marco del Festival: el anuncio oficial del inicio del Berklee Global Jazz Institute para la formación integral de músicos profesionales, con sede en Boston, MA, con Danilo Pérez como su director artístico; una sorpresiva condecoración con la orden Vasco Núñez de Balboa a Danilo Pérez por la Primera Dama de la República; un Concierto en la Plaza Catedral con la representación artística de siete países y un público de más de 22,000 personas; la participación de las más importantes escuelas de música de Estados Unidos y de Puerto Rico; y la entrega de 17 becas internacionales a jóvenes músicos panameños. Todo esto con un importante impacto para la economía del país a través del turismo, la cultura y la educación. ¿Y cuál será el siguiente paso? Según su fundador y presidente, Danilo Pérez “…este Festival nos ha dejado muchas satisfacciones, ha quedado demostrado que la música es capaz de cambiar positivamente a nuestra sociedad. Ahora nos queda una mayor responsabilidad, seguir adelante con este proyecto que cada año crece más, pero necesita el compromiso de todos…” Y es que el jazz y el desarrollo cultural no quedan allí, el resto del año empieza a germinar el talento, las obras sociales, los programas de becas, los programas infantiles y eventos que desarrolla la Fundación Danilo Pérez, organización a cargo del Panama Jazz Festival. El jazz en Panamá no es sólo un Festival, el jazz es música capaz de cambiar vidas, de enriquecer y unir las artes, de inspirar a profesionales de todas las áreas y es música que abre la mente a los sueños, y más aún, da la posibilidad de realizarlos.

With 80 music clinics, 40 concerts and six days of intense musical and cultural activity designed for all audiences, the jazz festival exceeded all expectations.

This year Panama was witness to some surprising and thrilling official announcements; the opening of The Berklee Global Jazz Institute, founded for the shaping of integrated professional musicians, and the naming of Danilo Perez as its artistic director. He was honored with the Vasco Nuñez de Balboa Award by the first lady which was a proud, but unexpected event. The concert, held in the Plaza Catedral, played to an audience of more than 22,000 and had seven countries represented, including groups from the most prestigious music schools in the USA and Puerto Rico. It was here that 17 young Panamanians received international scholarships. Altogether, it made a cultural and educational impact on tourism and the economy.

What is the next step? ... According to the founder and president, Danilo Perez, “…this festival has given us a lot of satisfaction. It has shown that music has the capacity to promote positive change in society. Now we have a more sizable responsibility, to go forth with this project, which grows larger every year, but needs the commitment of all…” Jazz and cultural developments do not stop here. The rest of the year must be spent cultivating talent, doing social work, working on scholarship and children’s programs, and staging the events developed by the Danilo Perez Foundation, the organizers of the Panama Jazz Festival.

Jazz in Panama is not just a festival. Jazz is music that changes lives, enriches and creates artistic solidarity, and inspires all musical professionals. It is music that opens minds and makes dreams come true, and more than that, it provides the opportunity for one to realize his dream.

100 years of history and then some…

By Dr. Rolando Espino V. Historiador Este año se cumplen cien años de celebrarse en la capital del país el carnaval con reinas oficiales; pero antes de 1910, desde la época colonial, el carnaval se celebró en todo el país.

Nuestro carnaval es una herencia de España que tomó su propia identidad en Panamá.

En el interior del país los carnavales se celebran también desde hace mucho tiempo. Por ejemplo, en Las Tablas se realiza un carnaval muy particular. Allí el pueblo se divide en dos bandos: Calle Arriba y Calle Abajo.

Esta tradición de dos tunas rivales se remonta al siglo XIX, y a través del tiempo, su celebración ha variado en algunos aspectos.

En Las Tablas, por ejemplo, las Tunas y tamboritos eran fundamentales. Hoy la Murga ha desplazado a la cantalante y son ellos los que ponen la alegría a la Tuna; son indispensables.

Los fuegos artificiales fueron siempre un elemento necesario en las Tunas tableñas, hoy le siguen dando esa importancia.

El agua siempre se usó en los carnavales capitalinos y en Las Tablas. Las mojaderas o culecos es lo que más gusta dentro del carnaval. En Las Tablas son grandiosos y en la capital también se han incorporado.

Carnival on the isthmus, a tradition inherited from Spain, has its own Panamanian identity. Panama marks the 100th anniversary of Carnival celebrations in Panama City this year. Carnival with official queens began in the city in 1910, but carnival itself has been celebrated throughout the country since colonial times.

It has long been enjoyed in the interior provinces with the town of Las Tablas celebrating the occasion in a special way. The town is divided into two rival bands or tunas -- Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo (High Street and Low Street)-- in a custom which dates back to the 1800’s. Tunas and tamboritos (typical music) have always

Las tonadas o coplas, hirientes unas y graciosas otras, fueron precisos en el carnaval de antaño y actualmente también son de gran importancia pues son las que le dan el toque de rivalidad.

Actualmente el Carnaval Tableño se distingue por sus bellísimos carros alegóricos, que suelen ser representaciones artísticas de historias, mitos y leyendas. Los mismos son confeccionados por talleres especializados.

been a fundamental part of the activities but, over the years, Las Murgas (brass bands) have also become an indispensible facet of the Tunas’ merrymaking.

Likewise, fireworks have always played an essential role and continue to do so. Water is vital to celebrations in Las Tablas, as well as in Panama City and other towns. Known as mojaderas or culecos*, water activities are an enormously popular part of the celebration.

Traditionally, the tunas were symbolized by their brightly colored festive flags; today they are symbolized by queens dressed in costly and luxurious costumes and dresses. Candles and perfumes, historically used in the celebrations, have all but disappeared in both Las Tablas and the capital.

The tonadas or coplas**, some fiery and some amusing, were the origins of the rivalry in times past and are still the sparks that rouse the spirit of competition today.

The Tableño Carnival in Las Tablas is well known for its beautifully decorated parade floats. Specialized shops in the area magically bring to life artistic renditions of history, myths, and legends. The floats and all the decorations are secretly worked on all year and are part of the contest between Calle Abajo and Calle Arriba.

Carnival 2010 promises to be a big success in the entire Republic of Panama.

*Mojaderas or culecos are daytime activities where people jump and sing in groups while large tank trucks of water cool off delighted crowds in huge soaking sprays of water. **Tonaladas or coplas are groups who dance and chant original, cleverly worded songs that taunt the rival groups. They are always quick witted and entertaining.

INBOCA, un sueño que camina: construcción de alternativas financieras para la conservación ambiental, caso Bocas del Toro.

El financiamiento a largo plazo para la conservación de los recursos naturales y el manejo de las áreas protegidas ha sido y continúa siendo un desafío. Con el proyecto Implementación de una estrategia de fortalecimiento de gestión, generación y administración de recursos financieros para el manejo y conservación de las áreas protegidas de la provincia de Bocas del Toro, ejecutado por la Fundación NATURA y financiado por USAID, en el marco del Programa de Conservación de Cuencas Centroamericanas, desarrollado por Chemonics, se generaron una serie de alternativas que apuntalan la mejora de los sistemas actuales de recaudación de recursos para las áreas protegidas de Bocas del Toro y proponen nuevos mecanismos de recaudación.

Luego de talleres de consulta en el área, entrevistas y análisis de los datos económicos y considerando que las actividades económicas principales en el área de Bocas del Toro giran en torno al turismo, la Fundación NATURA propone y acciona la creación de un Fondo Ambiental. La idea comienza a evolucionar desde un fondo local para un área Protegida, pasando luego a ampliar el espacio de acción al archipiélago de Bocas del Toro, para finalmente consensuar con los pobladores que, el Fondo debía ser para la provincia y salvar sus paisajes, naturaleza y cultura. De esta forma nace el nombre del Fondo como la “Iniciativa Bocatoreña para la Cultura y el Ambiente”, INBOCA.

El Fondo INBOCA es una alternativa de gestión financiera construida con los bocatoreños para los bocatoreños, que pretende atender las demandas de conservación de ese valioso patrimonio natural y cultural. Y siendo que la conservación es un asunto de todos, se ha identificado el desarrollar de buenas prácticas amigables con el ambiente para los servicios turísticos y otros, proveyendo herramientas necesarias para que las actividades productivas en la provincia sean socialmente viables e incluyentes, ambientalmente sostenibles y económicamente rentables; apostando a un desarrollo integral de las personas, grupos sociales y comunidad en general.

Sustainable financing for nature conservation and maintaining protected areas has always been, and continues to be, a challenge. The project, Implementación de una estrategia de fortalecimiento de gestión, generación y administración de recursos financieros para el manejo y conservación de las áreas protegidas de la provincia de Bocas del Toro (strategy implementations for initiating, generating and administering financial resources for the management and conservation of protected areas in Bocas del Toro) started by La Fundación NATURA (Nature Foundation) and financed by USAID encompasses the Programa de Conservación de Cuencas Centroamericanas (program for the conservation of Central American water sheds). Developed by Chemonics, it is generating a series of alternatives to meet the challenge and establish the best system to accumulate financial resourses for Bocas’ protected areas while proposing new alternatives for collection.

After workshops, and interviews, while keeping in mind that the principal economic activities of Bocas are all related to tourism, NATURA took the decision to create the Fondo Ambietal (Environment Fund). The name INBOCA is an acronym for “Iniciativa Bocatoreña para la Cultura y el Ambiente” (Bocatorean initiative for culture and environment) based on the concept that in order to save the province’s landscape, nature and culture, a fund would be initially fixed for a protected area, then be amplified to include the entire archipelago, and finally involve the entire province.

The INBOCA fund is a financial gesture constructed by Bocatoreans for Bocatoreans that intends to meet nature’s needs for this valuable natural and cultural patrimony. Because that conservation is everyone’s responsibility, they have developed a practical and environmentally friendly program for the tourist industry. It provides the province with the necessary tools to offer a socially viable, environmentally sustainable, and economically productive system that depends on the integration of individuals, social groups, and the community in general.

INBOCA acaba de nacer y necesita tu apoyo. Ayúdanos a divulgarlo. Inicialmente incluye la participación del sector privado que presta servicios turísticos, a través de donaciones voluntarias, alcancías y otros medios. Sin embargo, el Fondo INBOCA se ha concebido como una iniciativa abierta, no sólo para captar recursos del sector privado, sino para incluir otros mecanismos opcionales atractivos para la participación de los Gobiernos Locales, Instituciones y organismos financieros bilaterales.

INBOCA contará con un Consejo Directivo mixto, conformado mayoritariamente por representantes de la sociedad civil, incluyendo al Sector Privado, ONGs Locales, Comunidades, Autoridades Locales e Instituciones. Contará también con la fortaleza de la experiencia y prestigio de la Fundación NATURA como administrador del mismo, rol que incluye los procesos de recaudación de recursos, administración del fondo, diseño de cartera de proyectos, financiamiento y seguimiento de los mismos, todo en el marco de los planes de manejo, planes municipales o de sitio para la provincia.

La próxima ocasión que viajes a Bocas del Toro y escuches o leas el nombre de INBOCA, sabrás que hay hombres y mujeres trabajando por conservar este paraíso tropical, hogar de las impresionantes Tortugas marinas, el sorprendente y escurridizo Manatí, los juguetones Delfines y donde la tradición y la cultura de su gente ponen el acento de Biodiversidad. Y por qué no, tú también puedes ser parte de este sueño que camina.

INBOCA is in its infancy and it needs your help. We need to spread the news. Initially this will include the participation of the tourism sector with grassroots donations. But INBOCA was conceived to be an all inclusive operation with an intention to include all available mechanisms far beyond the private sector, such as governments, institutions, and bilateral financial organs.

INBOCA will have a directive council that will include participants from all areas, the private sector, local ONGs, and communities, as well as local institutions and authorities. It will also have the backing of NATURA fortifying it with the strength of the foundation’s experience and the prestige. As administrators, NATURA will handle the collection process and administration of funds, project design, financing, and management, all within the established plans and the management frameworks of the pertinent municipalities or provincial areas.

The next time you travel to Bocas or you hear the name INBOCA, know that there are men and women working to preserve this tropical paradise. The tradition and culture of the inhabitants themselves adds an accent of biodiversity to this home of impressive sea turtles, shy manatees, and playful dolphins.

Los frutos del mar tienen dentro del mundo gastronómico un sitial de honor por su versatilidad, excelente sabor, precio accesible y la facilidad con que se pueden cocinar, haciendo de cualquier receta una verdadera protagonista.

En esta oportunidad quiero destacar la conveniencia de utilizar estos manjares que nos regala la naturaleza, gracias a que particularmente en Panamá fuimos bendecidos con kilómetros de costas en ambos océanos; y esto no sólo nos brinda un atractivo turístico inigualable sino que además nos proporciona una fácil y deliciosa alternativa a la hora de cocinar.

Because of its versatility, wonderful flavors, affordability, and easy preparation, the “fruit of the sea” has always held a special place of honor in the gastronomic world. It is truly a star in any recipe.

Panama is blessed with endless kilometers of coastline on two oceans making it easy and convenient to enjoy seafood. Seafood is always a popular choice among Panamanians.

“Always be careful while telling lies and eating fish,” warned my wise grandmother, Maria. She was taking about fish bones which, luckily, one does not need to worry as much about today because the process of filleting has become so refined.

Para decir mentiras y comer pescado…¡Hay que tener cuidado! decía sabiamente mi abuelita María, sin embargo, el protagonista de hoy tiene características tan especiales que no hay que preocuparse tanto de molestas espinas.

La corvina es un pez de carne blanca y suculenta que abunda en nuestras costas y que se presta para un sin número de preparaciones, desde el tradicional y delicioso cebiche de corvina al estilo panameño (preparado sólo con jugo de limón, cebolla y sal), pasando por muchísimas preparaciones “gourmet”, o bien simplemente frito o a la plancha, entero o en filetes, rociado con unas gotas de limón.

Les ofrezco mi versión del Panameñísimo “Filete de corvina al ajillo”, espectacular por donde se le mire, por lo fácil, rápido y económico de su preparación. Que lo disfruten.

Corvina, a succulent white fish that abounds in Panamanian waters, lends itself to a variety of preparations -- from the traditional and delightful ceviche to the typical Panamanian style corvina prepared only with lime juice, onion and salt and the many diverse “gourmet” concoctions in between. Fried, grilled, whole, or filleted and just sprinkled with lime juice, Corvina is always simply scrumptious.

I offer you my very Panamanian version of “corvina al ajillo” (corvina fillet in garlic sauce). It is spectacular however you look at it … easy, quick, economical and delectable. Enjoy!

Corvina al Ajillo

(4 porciones)

Ingredientes:

- 4 filetes de corvina (sea bass) de aproximadamente 6 onzas.

- 2 cucharadas de aceite de oliva (para el pescado) - ¼ taza de aceite de oliva (para la salsa).

- 1 cucharada de semillas de achiote (onoto, annatto seed).

- 2 cucharadas de ajo picadito.

- 2 cucharadas de cebolla picadita.

- 2 cucharadas de perejil picadito.

- 2 cucharadas de pimiento rojo picadito.

- ½ taza de vino blanco - 1 taza de caldo de pescado.

- 2 cucharadas de jugo de limón fresco.

- 2 cucharadas de maicena para espesar.

C/n de sal y pimienta negra recién molida.

Preparación:

En una sartén calentar el aceite de oliva con las semillas de achiote, hasta que éste se tiña completamente. Colar y devolver a la sartén. Agregar la cebolla, el ajo y el pimiento y cocinar a fuego medio por un par de minutos. Añadir el vino y el caldo y dejar reducir un poco. Espesar con la maicena disuelta en un poco de agua y por último agregarle el perejil y jugo de limón. Reservar.

Sazonar con sal y pimienta los filetes. Calentar en una sartén a fuego medio las dos cucharadas de aceite de oliva y cocinar con cuidado los filetes, unos tres minutos por cada lado, hasta que estén totalmente cocidos. Servir los filetes bañados con la salsa acompañados con puré de papas o arroz blanco.

Corvina al Ajillo ( 4 portions)

Ingredients: 4 fillets of corvina (approx. 6 oz. each) 2 tblsp. olive oil (for fish) ¼ cup olive oil ( for sauce) 1 tbsp. achiote (onoto, annatto seed)** 2 tbsp. minced garlic 2 tbsp. chopped onion 2 tbsp. chopped parsley 2 tbsp. lime juice 2 tbsp. chopped red pepper (sweet) ½ cup white wine 1 cup fish broth 2 tbsp. cornstarch for thickening Salt and freshly ground pepper

Preparation:

Heat the ¼ cup of olive oil in a large skillet with the achiote seeds and cook until the oil is completely tinted by the seeds. Strain and return the oil to the skillet. Add the onion, garlic, and pepper, cooking on medium until tender. Add the wine and fish broth, and allow it to slightly reduce. Dissolve the cornstarch in a little bit of water, and add it to the broth and thicken. Add the parsley and lime juice, and set aside.

Season the fillets with salt and pepper. Heat the 2 tblsp. olive oil in a skillet and cook on medium, three minutes per side or until fully but not overcooked. Serve with sauce and accompany with pureed potatoes or white rice
