Ascenso a la cima del Volcán Barú / Scaling Vocan Baru

Existen diferentes maneras de llegar a la cima del Volcán Barú a 3,475 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Se puede llegar escalando, en tours de “4 wheels” y algunos se atreven a subir en vehículos 4x4, pero deben ser autos realmente potentes para llegar; sea cual sea su elección, ésta es la máxima aventura que puede vivir en Chiriquí. Para alcanzar la meta se requiere de un nivel físico y mental óptimo, por lo cual, si no ha entrenado nunca, debe prepararse al menos 2 meses antes de la expedición. También es importante contar con el equipo adecuado e ir en un tour con un guía especializado (nunca debe ir solo).

There are many ways to get to the summit of Vocan Baru 3,475 meters (11,401 ft.) above sea level. You can climb, go by ATV or 4x4 vehicle. No matter how you get there Baru’s summit is the ultimate adventure to be had in Chiriqui. It is an adventure that requires you to be in shape both mentally and physically so if you are not an exercise enthusiast you should train for at least a couple of months before attempting this expedition which also requires some special gear. It is best to go on a tour with a specialized guide… do not attempt this one on your own. A unique and very special reward for summiting the Baru is that on a clear day you can see both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean.

En Chiriquí hay diferentes senderos con diversos niveles de dificultad. Aunque puede parecer una actividad relativamente suave, en realidad hay rutas que gracias a su dificultad y rica vida silvestre presentan un desafío para cualquiera que se atreva a transitarlas. El sendero de los Quetzales (Cerro Punta – Boquete) es el más conocido a nivel nacional e internacional; está dentro del Parque Nacional Volcán Barú. También se encuentran el Sendero del Cráter y Sendero La Nevera. Además hay varios senderos en el Parque Nacional de la Amistad.

There are all kinds and all levels of hiking trails in Chiriqui. At first this might appear to be a rather passive activity in reality there are trails that whose difficulty and total immersion into wildlife inhabited areas are challenging to any adventurer. The most nationally and internationally well known of these is the Quetzal Trail inside the national park, Parque Nacional Volcan Baru. Also popular are the Crater Trail and the La Nevera Trail, and various others found inside the national park, Parque Nacional de la Amistad.

Parque Nacional Marino Golfo De Chiriquí / Parque Nacional Marino, Golfo de Chiriqui. (the national marine park at the Paridas Islands in the Gulf of Chiriqui)

Con una extensión de 14,740 hectáreas, el Parque Marino protege una parte de la costa del Golfo y las islas Secas y Paridas, donde es posible observar (en temporada), ballenas jorobadas y piloto, orcas, tiburones, mantarrayas y delfines; en fin, todo un paraíso ecológico.

This marine park runs along the coast and includes the Paridas and Secas islands, it is a protected ecological paradise of 14,740 hectares (36,423 acres). Here you can enjoy marine life, watching whales, humpbacks, pilot and orcas during their season, as well as exciting species such as sharks, manta rays, and dolphins.

10.Escalada en Roca / Rock Climbing

La estación seca es el momento perfecto para escalar en Boquete, donde hay más de 35 rutas calificadas según su grado de dificultad, desde 5.0 a 5.15, sólo para expertos escaladores. La pared de roca más famosa es “El Gunko” (ladrillos en Nöbe Buglé), y está formada de roca basáltica de origen volcánico.

Esta pared con forma de ladrillos se encuentra en el área de Bajo Mono conocida como “Los Ladrillos”, a 10 minutos de Boquete en auto. En el pueblo existen personas calificadas tanto para entrenarlo, como para llevarlo y proveerle del equipo y seguridad necesarios.

Dry season is the perfect time for rock climbing in Boquete. The climbing is great and 35 of the climbs rate between 5.0 and 5.15, only for expert climbers. Formed of basaltic volcanic rock, the most famous of the rock faces is the “El Gunko” (bricks in the indigenous dialect of the Nobe Bugle). This face, with its bricklike formation, is in the Bajo Mono area known as “Los Ladrillos,” about ten minutes from Boquete by car. Certified guides, trainers and the necessary safety equipment can be found in Boquete.

Nuestra empresa reconoce la importancia de la biodiversidad del área del proyecto y por ello ha adoptado el compromiso de obtener un impacto neto positivo de su gestión. Como primera iniciativa de este compromiso, elaboramos un Plan de Acción para la Biodiversidad que contiene las actividades que desarrollaremos para contribuir a asegurar la sostenibilidad de nuestras operaciones y la viabilidad del ecosistema y de las poblaciones de vida silvestre que alberga.

Entre las iniciativas más destacadas podemos citar: A escala de paisaje hemos comprometido el apoyo necesario para fortalecer la administración de dos áreas protegidas, los parques nacionales Santa Fe y Omar Torrijos, así como el Distrito de Donoso. Esto permitirá fortalecer las oportunidades para la conservación de un área significativa del Corredor Biológico Mesoamericano. Los estudios de línea base y complementarios que desarrolla Minera Panamá desde el 2007, han permitido dar a conocer hasta la fecha la presencia de 55 probables nuevas especies de flora y fauna (4 ya han sido publicadas), así como a documentar la presencia de varias especies cuya existencia en la zona no había sido evidenciada antes (Oso hormiguero).

Esta visión de gestión integral y a largo plazo, incluye en particular los proyectos de reforestación que Minera Panamá está desarrollando desde el 2008 en diferentes regiones del país.

Además de proponer la conservación de 250,000 hectáreas del Corredor Biológico Mesoamericano y la reforestación de 10,475 hectáreas con especies nativas a nivel nacional, el proyecto Cobre Panamá permitirá que por cada dólar generado, el 53% permanezca en Panamá. Proyecto Cobre Panamá es la inversión privada más grande en las historia del país, 5.000 millones de dólares que traen beneficios económicos y sociales para el país.

Conserving 250,000 hectares in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor Our company recognizes the importance of conservation; and therefore, we have made the commitment to achieve a positive impact. As a first initiative, we have developed a Biodiversity Action Plan that contains the activities that we will develop to ensure sustainability in our operations and the protection of the surrounding ecosystem and wildlife population.

The following are among the most important initiatives: For the conservation of the environment as a whole, we have committed the necessary support to strengthen the management of two protected areas, Omar Torrijos and Santa Fe National Parks and the Donoso District. This will strengthen the opportunities for conserving a significant area of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. Baseline and complementary studies that Minera Panama have developed since 2007, have allowed the discovery of 55 likely new species of flora and fauna (4 have already been published), and to document the presence of several species whose existence in the area had not been verified before (anteater).

This vision of integral and long-term management specifically includes reforestation projects that Minera Panama has been developing since 2008 in different regions of the country.

In addition to proposing the conservation of 250,000 hectares of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor and 10.475 hectares of reforestation with native species at the national level, the Cobre (Copper) Panama Project will allow for 53% of every dollar generated to stay in Panama. The Cobre Panama Project is the largest private investment in the history of the country. This means 5,000 million dollars that convey economic and social benefits for the country.

Por más de 70 años, Dulces Córdoba ha representado una de las tradiciones más populares de la provincia de Chiriquí, fabricando los manjares más gustados de la región, entre los que se encuentran los populares “huevitos de leche”, favoritos de muchos. Uno de los secretos de este creciente negocio familiar fue el hecho de respetar la receta original y de esta manera conservar la calidad de sus productos, reconocida tanto por nacionales como por extranjeros.

Desde 1927 estas golosinas eran ya conocidas en las festividades que se celebraban en la provincia y para Navidad, épocas en que estos dulces caseros eran vendidos en mesitas afuera de las casas y en pequeñas cantidades. A partir de 1937, las hijas de Doña Nieve (Q.E.P.D) y Cástulo Córdoba (Q.E.P.D): Doña Margarita y Doña Carmen, emprenden una pequeña fábrica a partir de la venta de las golosinas domésticas.

For more than 70 years, Dulces Cordoba has represented one of the Chiriqui Province’s most popular traditions, the confection of delicacies from the region.

Amongst them are the popular milk eggs (huevitos de leche). One of the secrets of this growing family business is to stay true to the original recipe, thereby preserving the quality of the products that are recognized by both locals and foreigners alike.

Since 1927 these goodies have been part of the festivities held in the province and during Christmas, where these homemade sweets were sold in small quantities at tables outside of homes. However; in 1937, the daughters of Doña Margarita (RIP) and Castulo Cordoba (RIP), Doña Margarita and Carmen, develop a small factory from the sale of domestic sweets.

En la actualidad la Sra. Dilian Frago de Secchi, esposa del único hijo de Doña Carmen -el Lic Carlos Gmo Secchi Córdoba-, es la administradora del negocio en compañía de 5 empleados.

Esta microempresa, además de preparar los “huevitos de leche” o “huevitos de faltriquera”, como también se conocen, elabora cocaditas de coco, cocaditas de leche, merengues, suspiros, bocadillos de plátano y manjar blanco.

La leche, el coco y el plátano son los ingredientes principales e imprescindibles para la elaboración de estos dulces, además de contar con una variedad de pailas, revolvedores y hornillas de tipo industrial, los cuales forman parte del utensilio cotidiano.

Milk, coconut and bananas are the main ingredients essential for the development of these sweets. The everyday tools that are needed are a variety of pots, stirrers and industrial type burners.

Currently, Mrs. Secchi Dilian Frago, wife of the only son of Doña Carmen, Carlos Gmo Secchi Cordoba, is the company’s business manager along with 5 employees.

El éxito de estos dulces es innegable, al punto que el INAC y Relaciones Exteriores los han llevado a diversas ferias alrededor del mundo, entre ellas Japón y Alemania. Además, cabe mencionar que los turistas que llegan a la provincia provenientes de Argentina, España, Puerto Rico, Estados Unidos, por mencionar algunos países, han promovido estos dulces mediante la compra ya sea de pequeñas o grandes cantidades, y luego dándolos a conocer en sus países.

“En una ocasión un señor que venía de Panamá le dijo a la muchacha que atendía en ese momento que le vendiera tantas cajas de dulces como tuviera disponibles, ya que en su viaje anterior unas compañeras de trabajo le habían pedido que les llevara los dulces y a él se le olvidó; cuando iba por el camino de regreso se acordó y compró en otro lugar. Cuando llegó a Panamá entregó los dulces a las muchachas, pero ellas supieron que esos no eran de Córdoba, así que mejor se aseguraba y esta vez los compraba acabando de llegar, y así evitaba que se le olvidara nuevamente”.

The success of this candy is undeniable, so much so that INAC and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have taken them to various fairs around the world, including Japan and Germany. Also noteworthy are the many tourists who come to the province from Argentina, Spain, Puerto Rico and the United States, among others, to purchase these sweets either in small or large quantities. They have been significant in promoting these treats by introducing them to their own countries.

“Once a man from Panama came and told the girl that was serving that he would like as many small boxes of candy as he could buy because on his last trip he had forgotten. When he finally remembered, he bought some sweets at a random stand. Upon delivering the treats to the ladies in his office, they knew immediately that they had not come from Dulces Cordoba, so this time he wanted to buy them immediately for fear that he might forget again.”

Julio Zachrisson nace en la Ciudad de Panamá (1928).

Se formó en el Instituto de Bellas Artes de la Ciudad de México (1953 - 1959), y es en esta ciudad donde realiza sus primeras exposiciones y vive las polémicas entre los muralistas y los abanderados de una búsqueda de formas nuevas. Su postura conciliadora le permite asimilar lo positivo de cada visión, estimulado por el movimiento creativo renovador que empezaba a surgir entonces.

Julio Zachrisson was born in Panama in 1928. He was educated at the Instituto de Bellas Artes in Mexico City (1953 - 1959). This is where his first expositions were held and where he experienced the controversy between the muralists and the champions for a new creative form. His conciliatory stance allowed him to assimilate the positive in every vision, spurred by the renewed creative movement that had begun to emerge.

Zachrisson arribó al viejo continente motivado, en buena parte, por su admiración por los expresionistas alemanes y por los grandes maestros españoles como Velázquez, Goya y Picasso. Llega a España en 1961, empujado por la curiosidad que habían despertado en él unas reproducciones de la Tauromaquia de Goya. Tras visitar el Museo Nacional del Prado y ver la obra del gran pintor español decide quedarse en Madrid, donde vive desde entonces, vinculado al mundo literario y artístico español.

Zachrisson arrived to the old continent motivated largely by the German expressionists and by the great Spanish masters such as Velázquez, Goya, and Picasso.

He arrived in Spain in 1961, driven forward by a curiosity that had been awakened in him through reproductions of Goya’s Tauromaquia. After visiting the Prado Museum and seeing the work of the Spanish master, he decides to stay in Madrid, where he now lives, linked to the Spanish literary and artistic world.

Se matricula en la Escuela de San Fernando con el fin de poder trabajar en la Calcografía Nacional, donde un buen número de artistas aprovecha su experiencia en el grabado. Es a partir de esa época cuando el arte occidental elige a nuestro artista para fundirse con sus fuertes raíces figurativas, hundidas en el indigenismo y las pinturas precolombinas. He enrolled in the San Fernando School (Escuela de San Fernando) in order to work at the National Engraving (Calcografía Nacional), where a number of artists gained from his engraving expertise. During this time, Western art chooses our artist in order to merge with his strong figurative roots, deep with indigenous themes and Pre-Colombian paintings.

Zachrisson is an artist committed to his era and to the expression of art. This is evident in his works where he portrays the social reality of Latin America, rescuing the idiosyncrasies of our towns, where history and myth are blurred.

Innumerables son los premios que reconocen su valía, entre los que figuran el Primer Premio de Dibujo del Salón de Arte Hispanoamericano, 1962, o el Premio de Grabado “Aragón Goya”, 1996. Por su posición geográfica, Panamá ha sido un lugar fascinante para los científicos desde siempre. Durante la construcción del canal francés, habían ya paleontólogos estudiando el suelo panameño.

Panama, because of its geographic position, has always fascinated scientists. During the French attempt at constructing a canal, paleontologists were there studying the Panamanian soil.

Luego, motivado por el inventario biológico de la zona del canal, el Instituto Smithsonian estableció en 1910, en Panamá, una sede dedicada a estudiar los cambios ocasionados en su flora y fauna como consecuencia de la construcción del Canal.

Later, in 1910, motivated by a growing biological inventory in the Canal Zone, the Smithsonian Institute established itself in Panama. Their original task was to study the effects of canal construction on the flora and fauna of the isthmus.

Desde entonces paleontólogos, biólogos y geólogos han estudiado los ambientes naturales del país. Entre ellos, mentes brillantes como Joseph Cushman, Wendel Woodring y Tony Coates han recogido datos que ayudan a entender como era Panamá cuando no había personas en ella. Estos datos explicaban un pasado crucial en la formación del mundo como lo conocemos..

Since then, paleontologists, biologists, and geologists have studied the nature of the country. Among them brilliant minds like Joseph Cushman, Wendel Woodring, and Tony Coates who gathered data to understand what Panama was like before it was inhabited by humans. This data explained a past that had been crucial in the formation of the world we know.

Un pasado en el que se presumía que la franja de Panamá era una jovencita de 3.5 millones de años con el poder de congelar el Ártico y desviar corrientes oceánicas. Sin embargo, descubrimientos hechos en las excavaciones del Programa de Ampliación han dado lugar a una nueva hipótesis. Panamá pudo haber surgido del fondo del mar hace 22 millones de años con una serie de islas que lentamente se fueron uniendo.

Los científicos del Smithsonian, Carlos Jaramillo, Camilo Montes y David Farris, están al frente de esta nueva teoría. Recientemente publicaron en la revista Geology el artículo “Fracturación del istmo de Panamá durante la colisión inicial con Suramérica” donde exponen una nueva teoría sobre la edad del istmo de Panamá. Localmente, en la sexta conferencia de la celebración de 100 años de ciencia del STRI en Panamá, Jaramillo explicó que esta nueva teoría se apoya en las excavaciones de la ampliación del canal y en nuevas tecnologías de investigación.

Entre los hallazgos se cuentan fósiles de troncos de árboles, huesos de un caballo que midió 40 centímetros de altura, camellos de 20 centímetros, caparazones de tortugas y hasta restos de rinocerontes.

“Panamá está llena de fósiles” Mientras las enormes máquinas excavadoras abren la roca, van apareciendo restos de vidas anteriores. En medio de esta actividad, los paleontólogos de STRI caminan recolectando pedacitos de cosas en Gatún y Cocolí. En ocasiones, los científicos se llevan enormes sacos de sedimentos que luego son tamizados para encontrar pequeños huesos y fósiles.

“Se necesita la roca fresca que sólo una excavación como la del Canal de Panamá puede ofrecer. La excavación de la ampliación es como un regalo de navidad para nosotros, y una oportunidad para que la ciencia crezca…

Panamá está llena de fósiles” acota Jaramillo.

Camilo Montes explica cómo llegaron a esta conclusión.

“Lo que hicimos nosotros fue utilizar herramientas nuevas, que se han desarrollado en los últimos 10-15 años, que nos dicen, esta roca estuvo a tal profundidad en tal época”.

Las muestras recolectadas permitirán abrir el debate de nuevas explicaciones del paso de animales y plantas entre el norte y el sur, ya que es posible que la relación se haya dado mucho antes de lo que se pensaba. En lugar de un escenario de olas, la tierra del istmo pudo haber estado expuesta, llena de plantas y animales. Así, los científicos tendrán un espacio potencial donde hacer nuevas preguntas sobre especies hermanas en Norte y Sur América.

It presumed that the isthmus was young, about 3.5 million years old, and had the power to freeze the arctic and reroute the oceans currents. However discoveries in the recent excavations are presenting a new hypothesis. Panama may have risen from the depths of the ocean 22 million years ago in a series of islands that gradually grew together.

Smithsonian scientists Carlos Jaramillo, Camilo Montes, and David Farris are at the forefront this new theory.

Not long ago, the Geology magazine published an article “Fracturing of the Panamanian Isthmus During Initial Collision With South America” that proposed the new theory about the age of the isthmus of Panama. Locally, at the sixth conference celebrating the hundred years of STRI (Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute), Jaramillo explained that this theory is supported by evidence found in the canal expansion excavation and modern investigative technology. Among the discoveries, there are fossilized tree trunks, bones of a horse measuring 40 centimeters (approx.15 ½ in.), camels of 20cm (approx. 7 ¾ in.), tortoise shells, and the remains of a rhinoceros.

“Panama is full of fossils” As the enormous machinery breaks the rock sign of previous life reveals itself. In the middle of this activity at Gatun and Cocoli, STRI’s scientists collect pieces to study, often filling their bags with sediment that they later sieve in search of small bones and fossils. “We need freshly dug rock that only a project like the excavation can offer. The excavation is like Christmas for us, an opportunity for science to flourish…Panama is full of fossils,” states Jaramillo.

Camilo Montes explains how they arrived at their conclusion. “What we did was use new tools, which have been developed in the last 10-15 years and tell us that a rock was a particular density in a particular period.”

The collected specimens open a discussion of new explications of the migrations of plants and animals between the north and south and the possibility that this relationship began long before previously thought.

In place of scenes of waves the earth might have already been established, full of plant and animal life.

Scientists have a fresh potential expanse to propose new questions about kindred species in North and South America.

Además de generar nuevas preguntas sobre el intercambio de fauna y flora entre las dos masas continentales de América, también se abre un nuevo debate sobre el clima.

Tradicionalmente el surgimiento del istmo señalaba en la historia el congelamiento del Ártico hace 3.5 millones de años, pero si el puente de tierra surgió hace 22 millones de años, habrá que revisar muchas conclusiones sobre el clima actual.

Besides generating new questions about the exchange of flora and fauna in the two American continental masses it also has opened a new discussion about weather. Traditionally the creation of the isthmus 3.5 million years ago historically marked the freezing of the Arctic. But if land appeared 22 million years ago many previously held conclusions about the weather will need revision.

La ciencia de la paleoclimatología viene al rescate de las nuevas preguntas, tal vez no para resolverlas del todo si no para ampliarlas más. Ella estudia las variaciones del clima en la historia de la Tierra, sus causas y el impacto de eventos pasados en el clima que conocemos hoy y las extinciones de animales por ejemplo.

The science of Paleo-climatology comes to the rescue and what new questions it is unable to completely resolve, it can at least further explain. It studies the climatic variations in the history of the earth, their causes and impact on past events and the relationship between the weather as we know it today. It also addresses animal extinction.

Pero para saber más detalles hay que esperar un poco. Los nuevos modelos geológicos de Jaramillo, Farris y Montes fueron enviados al Centro Nacional de Investigación Científica en París para la elaboración de un nuevo modelo climático. Para finales de este año se sabrá de que manera pudo haber influenciado el istmo de Panamá en el clima del mundo hace 22 millones de años. Luego entonces empezará el verdadero debate.

La conexión pasado presente futuro Además de los incontables beneficios de un Canal ampliado, el Programa también impulsa la ciencia en Panamá. Al menos una decena de panameños están involucrados en las investigaciones del STRI, entre ellos Oris Rodríguez, quien se encuentra estudiando un doctorado en el Royal Holloway de Londres y Carlos de Gracia, un joven científico de gran potencial. Futuros especialistas se preparan en la nueva licenciatura de ingeniería geológica que abrió la Universidad de Panamá, una disciplina que tiene un campo enorme en un país como el nuestro.

La ampliación del Canal de Panamá es un hilo que enlaza presente, pasado y futuro.

For more details the wait must continue. Jaramillo, Montes and Farris’ new geological models have been sent to The National Center of Scientific Investigation in Paris where a new climatic model will be drawn up. Not until the end of this year will we know how the world’s climate was influenced by Panama 22 million years ago.

Only then will the real debate begin.

The connection, past, present, and future In addition to all the benefits of the canal expansion the project is also giving a boost to science. At least a dozen Panamanians are involved in STRI’s research; among those is Oris Rodriquez, studying for a PHD at Royal Holloway in London, and Carlos De Gracia, a young scientist with great potential. Future specialists are studying at the University of Panama in a recently opened program of Geological Engineering, a major with a wide field in a country like ours.

The canal expansion is a thread that weaves together the past, the present, and the future. The massive excavations are revealing prehistoric truths that would have otherwise remained hidden. Each of the multifaceted projects generates thousands of jobs. The complexity and relevance of the task gives Panama international notoriety.

Jaramillo’s, Montes’ and Farris’ discovery opens many scientific possibilities and giving new meaning to the popular slogan “Panama, Bridge of the World”.

Es difícil visitar cualquier supermercado en Panamá y no ver esos vegetales verdes arrugados con forma de pera. Los panameños le dirán que son chayotes, y si pregunta cómo prepararlos, las respuestas serán tan variadas como la cantidad de personas a las que usted consulte. En la cocina panameña el chayote ocupa un lugar muy importante, y discretamente es así en la cocina de todos.

It is difficult to go to any market in Panama and not see “those” wrinkled green, pear- shaped vegetables.

The locals they will tell you that they are chayotes; if you ask the how to prepare them the answers will be as varied as the number of people you ask. In Panamanian cuisine, the chayote is like an important, but quiet, relative; it unobtrusively occupies an important position in everyone’s kitchen.

El chayote tiene múltiples usos, es una planta que al igual que el pepino, calabacín y el melón pertenece a la familia de las Cucurbitáceas. Cada parte de esta planta, desde la raíz hasta la fruta, puede comerse.

La fruta se puede disfrutar cruda, cocinada, en conserva, pelada o sin pelar. Las hojas tiernas pueden usarse en ensaladas, así como los tubérculos jóvenes.

Preparación:he Hierva el chayote en 2 tazas de agua con sal. Mezcle el chayote con una taza de agua en la que fue hervido en una licuadora hasta que quede como puré y reserve. Saltear las cebollas y el ajo en la mantequilla y el aceite de oliva hasta que la cebolla se ponga transparente, agregar la yuca cruda rallada y remover durante 2 minutos. Añadir el caldo y cocinar a fuego medio hasta que comience a espesar. Agregar el puré de chayote, bajar la llama y cocer durante 15 minutos. Añada sal y pimienta.

Procedure: Boil the chayote in about 2 cups of salted water until tender Blend the tender chayote and about a cup of the cooking water in a blender until pureed, set aside.

Sauté the onions and garlic in butter and olive oil until transparent, add the grated raw yucca, and stir for two minutes. Add the broth and cook on medium until it begins to thicken. Add the pureed chayote lower the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper.

Combine the culantro, parsley and green onion.

Serve the soup and top with a spoonful of culantro, parsley, green onion and a squeeze of lime juice.

Cada año muchos son los panameños que deciden emprender una aventura realmente única, ascender hasta la cima del Volcán Barú. Aunque no es una montaña tan alta como otras de Suramérica y Europa, es un atractivo centroamericano difícil de evadir para muchos montañistas de otras naciones que viajan hasta nuestro país para experimentar la conquista de esta montaña panameña, capaz de exponer al máximo las condiciones físicas y psicológicas de algunos; y esto último ha incluido a excursionistas experimentados.

Every year, many Panamanians decide to embark on a really unique adventure, climb the Volcan Baru. Although not as high as many of the mountains of South America or Europe, it is a Central American attraction and has enticed international mountain climbers to come and experience the conquest of this Panamanian challenge with a capacity to physically and mentally drain even experienced climbers.

6:30 a.m. Partiendo desde las faldas del “Gran Barú” emprendimos una caminata de cinco compañeros que posteriormente, alcanzada la cima, nos llevaría a conocer otra cara de nuestro Panamá y su naturaleza viva. Aún sin salir el sol se lograba escuchar a lo lejos la fuerza del rugido de un puma, que posteriormente al encontrar sus huellas causó algo de temor en algunos, hasta nuestra primera parada al entrar en el ya conocido “Bosque de las Brujas”; un lugar tenebroso para el que cree y ha escuchado las leyendas de extravíos de personas en este tramo del recorrido, pero son sólo leyendas, porque en realidad está lleno de vida para el que experimenta la aventura con responsabilidad.

8:00 a.m. Nos detenemos para prepararnos un rápido café y nos encontramos junto a otros grupos que van por la misma ruta; compartimos fotografías y realizamos comentarios de ánimo y apoyo. Todos los grupos emprendimos la partida casi al mismo tiempo, separándose cada puñado de aventureros posteriormente en el camino, por el agotamiento y dificultades que el trayecto exige, hasta llegar a “El Claro”, una saliente bañada por la luz de la mañana permitiendo ver las primeras vistas de nuestro objetivo a la distancia, y dejando atrás la imagen de algunos poblados y civilización.

6:30 a.m. Leaving the slopes of the “Great Baru,” we start our hike; five friends who will eventually reach the summit and discover a new face of Panama and her nature. The sun is not yet up and we hear the far off growl of a puma. We eventually see its paw prints, causing some fear among a few in our party. Our next stop is the”Bosque de Las Brujas” ( The Witches’ Woods), a sinister place for those who believe in such things, and have heard the stories of those that have mysteriously gone missing there. These are, after all, just legends. The place is actually full of life for responsible adventurers.

8:00 a.m. We stop to have coffee and find ourselves with other groups on the same trail; we share photos and part with words of encouragement and support.

Parting at almost the same time, we seem to separate into handfuls of adventurers divided into groups by our abilities and the degrees of difficulties we are faced with. We stay like this until we arrive at “El Claro,” where, in the distance, we get the first glimpse of our objective and leave the image of civilization behind us.

12:00 p.m. Posterior a un almuerzo rápido en “El Ojo de Agua” nos topamos en el camino a excursionistas japoneses que descendían y llevaban amarradas a sus mochilas las bolsas llenas de basura, que no pretendían dejar atrás, lo que me causó satisfacción, turistas que se preocupan por nuestra montaña como si fuera de ellos, un ejemplo a seguir para muchos y un recordatorio para nosotros.

12:00 noon After a quick lunch at “El Ojo de Agua”(the springs), we get tangled on the trail with some Japanese climbers who are descending. They are carrying all their garbage tied to their backpacks and they would never think of leaving it behind. It made me happy to see how these tourists took care of our mountain as though it was theirs, a good example for all to follow and a reminder to us.

3:00 p.m. El tiempo pasaba, el cansancio cada vez mayor se manifestaba por la altitud y el terreno que se tornaba más difícil. Seguíamos cruzándonos con más grupos del día anterior que descendían por la ladera del volcán, que en algunos puntos era casi literalmente una escalada por las paredes de roca. El peso del equipo y la arenisca de otros trayectos exigían algo de precaución para no caer en un doloroso descenso sin frenos.

3:00 p.m. As time passes, the altitude and the increasingly difficult terrain is is taking its toll. We continue to encounter yesterday’s groups of climbers who are descending the mountainside. At some points the climb seems literally straight up rock faces. The weight of the equipment and the sandstone trajectories demand some caution, the only other option being a painful descent without brakes.

6:00 p.m En los último cien metros, volteabas a un costado y te podías percatar de que estabas sobre las nubes que cubrían completamente la Cordillera Central de Panamá y con la cruz de cima a escasos metros. El fondo del momento que se nos proyectaba nos pedía un esfuerzo final, avanzando los últimos tramos hasta que conseguimos llegar a la cumbre, de frente al atardecer, en donde un tono de luz perfecto adornaba “La Cruz” con un fondo celestial.

Se nos consumió gran parte del tiempo en una siesta que decidimos tomar hasta que nos pusimos en marcha y llegamos a “El Cable” (tan odiado por algunos); es señal de que estamos cerca de “La Boca”, entrada al cráter principal y desde donde se puede avistar las antenas de transmisión, llenando de fuerza el espíritu para conseguir la cima. Por mi parte, no recomiendo utilizar el mencionado cable; es más conveniente pasar por el costado izquierdo, que es igualmente un terreno frágil, pero un poco más firme y menos agotador.

A medida que avanzábamos los paisajes se volvían un paraíso terrenal. Pudimos ver como el viento llevaba las nubes a abrazar la montaña, y como el reflejo de la luz del sol en la roca mostraba el talento único de la dama naturaleza como artista de la creación.

We have used up too much time on a nap we decided to take; now we are on the way to a dreaded place called “El Cable.” It is a sign that we are close to “La Boca,” the entrance to the principal crater. It is from here that we will start to see the antennas. It is time to pump up energy and spirit to achieve the summit. I do not recommend using the cable at “El Cable,” I think it is better and more convenient to go to the left, the soil is also unstable but it is a bit firmer than the other option and less exhausting.

As we advance the scenery converts to paradise on Earth. We watch how the wind lifts the clouds to hug the mountain. We see the sun’s reflection on the rocks, painting images and proving that Mother Earth is nature’s most talented artist.

6:00 p.m. The last 100 meters. We turn around and see that we are perched above the clouds that cover the Cordillera Central de Panama (Panama’s central mountain range); ahead of us, the cross at the summit is just meters away. The moment we planned for is upon us, we call up the last of our energy to sustain us and then we are there, at the summit, “La Cruz,” the cross is perfectly lit, celestially defined, in the sunset.

Nos mantuvimos en la cima hasta llegadas las siete, y no puedo decir de la noche porque aún había buena luz de día. El frío empezaba a descender y nos recordaba que había que acampar. Llenos de satisfacción, el grupo de los cinco completó sin contratiempos, ni complicaciones los 3,475mts de altura máxima de nuestro país.

Una experiencia que todo panameño debe realizar, no sólo en escalada, también existen otras rutas creadas por donde se puede llegar en vehículo 4x4 (advertencia - no cualquier 4x4) hasta la cima, donde se pueden apreciar completamente Bocas del Toro y Chiriquí con sus archipiélagos, y nuestros dos océanos. Cabe destacar los espectáculos de la aparición de la luna y el amanecer, a los cuales recomiendo prestar especial atención.

We stayed on the summit until 7 p.m. It was still daylight and then it began to get cold, we remembered that we still had to set up camp. Filled with satisfaction we were, “the group of five,” we made it without delays or complications, we were at the highest point of our country, at 3,475 meters (11,401 ft.) It is something that every Panamanian ought to do; you do not have to climb, you can use alternate routes, by 4x4, to reach the summit and appreciate seeing both Bocas del Toro and Chiriqui and their archipelagos in our two oceans. Just imagine what the moon and the sunrise were like.

Boquete Jazz & Blues Festival 1 - 4 de Marzo / March 1 - 4 El Festival promete ser el evento más grande de música que se ha realizado en Chiriquí. Esta velada tendrá como escenario Valle Escondido y contará con un anfiteatro que remonta el estilo y diseño griego, en dónde los asistentes podrán acomodarse en cualquiera de los 500 asientos dentro de un entorno tropical.

Entre los músicos y bandas que se presentarán podemos destacar a Mitch Woods, Johnny Sansone, Andy Egert con Bob Stroger, Carlos Ubarte cuarteto con Idania, Saskia Laroo con Salsa de BP, Betty Bryant y Rigoberto Coba Big Band.

Además asistirá al festival un grupo de los mejores músicos de Chiriquí.

The first Jazz and Blues Festival will be held from the 1 – 4, March in Boquete, Chiriqui. This festival promises to be the biggest music event Chiriqui has ever seen, and the first of its kind in Panama.

The festival will be held at Valle Escondido’s Greek inspired, 500-seat amphitheatre. Attendees will be delighted with the tropical ambiance.

Among the musicians and bands that will be performing are Mitch Woods, Johnny Sansone, Andy Egert with Bob Stroger, the Carlos Ubarte Quartet with Idania, Saskia Laroo with Salsa de BP, Betty Bryant and Rigoberto Coba Big Band. The best local jazz and blues groups will also be performing.
