We closed the month of June on a hot and dry note. We finished the month off with only two inches of rain and plenty of heat advisories We hope the trend changes soon, but then again, it is summer in southeast Texas

With the heat and lack of rainfall, the courses have been holding up very well We had two successful closures for our small, hollow tine aerifications to relieve soil compaction During these closures, we also vertically mowed and lightly top dressed all greens We also vertically mowed all tees, collars, and approaches to remove a good amount of organic material and grain in the turfgrass Grain in turfgrass refers to the direction the turf is growing or laying, and vertically mowing the surface helps remove the grain and provide a mow upright growth and better quality of cut

We unfortunately had a major wind damaging storm move through our area during the middle of last month, which resulted in several downed large trees, limbs of various sizes, and tons of small debris. Our team handled the cleanup very well and had a little help from Cypress Tree Company and Dallas Tree Company with the larger tree cleanups. We even had help from several of the clubhouse staff in the cleanup efforts and we are very thankful for all who helped during this time.

More sod was added to North 18 fairway, South 10 fairway, and South 14 approach Our plan is to continue performing these small sod projects for the remainder of the growing season, as they make a big difference to the courses Please continue to take free relief from all areas of new sod Once we have it mowed out and remove the stakes, you are free to play from it

Our staff size has remained the same this month and is allowing us to really keep up with the routine mowing and detail work, more so than in years past. We hope you can notice it, as we really can. Moving on to July, we feel the heat and lack of rain will unfortunately continue. We will be closed four days per course in July to perform our major greens aerification. July 10 – 13 is the North course and July 24 – 27 is the South course, so please mark your calendars accordingly. All of these dates are posted on the Member only website calendar.

I will have another monthly maintenance update in August, so stay tuned My email address is dfranks@blackhorsegolfclub com and feel free to contact me with any questions Thank you for your membership and dedication to BlackHorse Golf Club

I have to give a shout out to Mark Skawronski! He had me sweating in the latest episode of the ProDown! If you have not seen it, be sure to check out our social media pages because Mark made a great Birdie to tie!

More fun programs are on the calendar for July We are working on increasing our communication efforts for all programming with a hope of continued increases in participation As Neil said, these events are fun and even more fun when we have lots of members out there

Erin had a great idea to take feedback in the form of birdies and bogeys I will do the same! If there is something or someone that is making your experiences remarkable (birdies), please let me know! If we are making some bogeys, please let me know as well so that we can make some adjustments to improve

We had a great Member tournament in June, the Modified Alternate Shot Stableford. This event was played over two days and the pace of play was great Thank you to our Members for stepping up the pace to make the event more fun for all! You can see the results on this page on the right

More complimentary Member clinics are on the books for this month Members that have been coming are learning and enjoying, so come find out for yourself We have some great topics to cover this month that you can view on the next page.
