FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Tulip has touched your hearts with soulful content. Fortnightly was a less time to keep a track on the same. Therefore, according to readers’ demand, Tulip is now a monthly magazine, with new designs and categories like Wellbeing (talking about the significance of modern day’s health and fitness) and other sub-categories like Books, Music, Movies, Star Icon, Success Story. Tulip now captures every aspect of what viewers love to read, irrespective of age group. Summer days are the best days of the year for students, a run on for office goers and a big tip for vacationers! Here we have a tantamount savor of savvy talk as Tulip’s other issues, but this time with a lot more spice churning up newfangled talks and ideas. The cover story runs the big talk with the King of all Khans - Salman Khan, his life and upcoming movies which are as uncanny as his Bollywood blockbuster Dabangg. The travel section is all about the terrific and fantabulous bounty of the rainbow country – South Africa! Perfect summers treat for every holiday maker. Here we have a rundown on Amitabh Bachchan’s life in the Film Industry from his blossom steps till he became the Shahanshah of Bollywood, coverage on celebrities holding for homeless children by adopting them, a thorough tutelage on how to keep our eyes pretty and safe this summer and an article stemmed under the motto ‘Go Green’ for the forthcoming environment day. A naughty spicy turnover, a girly exclusive in this issue is the ten different ways to make a guy like you which formulate all the how’s and why’s that a girl needs in her love life. Apart from our usual trend of presenting a unique story under Special Bonding and Piece of Life every issue, we have added extensive scope for our readers in our lifestyle column such as the list of latest worth reading books in the market, a personal choice list of the most famous DJs under music, on the intricacy of a famous painting style, Cubism and a tallied movie review on the Reel of the month – Pirates of Caribbean-on stranger tides. With the summer still looming over our heads for about another month till the downpour takes over, here we wish our readers a happy summer before the final adieu. Things I have learnt from this issue : The modus operandi to keep a happy and safe environment is entirely in our hands and as the saying goes, ‘drops of water makes an ocean’, similarly we should stand together in our fight against the breakdown of Earth by complying with the simple steps suggested. The life history of Amitabh Bachchan from prime years in the film industry to his breakthrough in Bollywood super hit of all times, Sholay and till date, his charisma and powerful approach has changed the face of Indian cinema. ‘Love is blind’, goes the saying. But is it? In this superfast world where women are pacing alongside men, here are ten awesome ways to make a guy fall for you. Just be yourself and the rest of the act is right on your fingertips!

DEOL TRIO AND PC At IIFA 2011 - Toronto Bollywood’s famous Deols veteran actor Dharmendra and his sons Sunny and Bobby are set to enthrall fans in Toronto with their signature dance steps at the 12th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards to be held next month. Actress Priyanka Chopra will add glamour to the event too. “Dad is celebrating his 50 years in the industry. It’s a great moment for all of us. So we are going to be all together and looking forward to it,” said actor Bobby Deol. Even at 75, the evergreen Dharmendra is quite excited to take to the stage to celebrate five decades of his contribution to the film industry. “I am loving it! Wherever we go we are going to enjoy because we all love you and you all love us’’ said Dharmendra. The three-day IIFA weekend will be in June. Actress Priyanka Chopra said she has not yet decided on the numbers she would be performing to at the IIFA event, but she hopes to do something unique.

Who dosen’t know Brett Lee the ace Aussie speedster. We also know him as a musician who plays bass guitar and also sings. But what many of us do not know is that this Oz hunk is a die hard fan of Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone. At a party hosted by Shah Rukh Khan at his residence Mannat, Deepika grabbed a lot of attention, the foremost being of Brett Lee who sang songs through out the night and dedicated them to the beautiful leggy lass, which left Shah Rukh amused. Though Deepika was embarrassed, she took his flirtations in a sportive way. The cricketers from Deccan Chargers and Pune Warriors including Sourav Ganguly were invited to the party, but sadly Dada did not turn up. All spotted were Sonali Bendre and Goldie Bhel who were accompanied by Priyanka Chopra. Wonder, how Siddhart Mallya is going to react to this. Will he do the same? And will she be embarassed by him also?

‘TONY CHANGED MY LIFE’ Imran on adopting pets

Brett Lee Embarasses Deepika!

Bollywood actor Imran Khan, who is getting rave reviews for the trailer of his forthcoming movie “Delhi Belly”, has urged people to follow his lead and adopt dogs instead of buying them through a new ad for animal welfare organization - People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The ad features Imran with his adopted dog, who passed away recently. The message on this ad (left) reads – ‘Tony changed my life. You can change a homeless dog’s life. Please Adopt’. Very often people buy dogs, cats - they see them as toys. They get bored of them and they throw them out of the house. That’s a very horrible thing to do,” said Imran. He adopted his dog Tony, after his friend found him wandering in the streets. Imran filed a complaint to the police and learned that the person Tony had been living with, had thrown him out of the house. “Ultimately it boils down to how much you care. I care a lot about animals. If I see an injured animal, sick animal and essentially any animal I feel I could help in some way, I do that,” added the actor, who hopes to open his own animal shelter some day.

Northern Ireland duo Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell also won. McIlroy defeated South African Retief Goosen on the last hole and US Open holder McDowell beat Open champion Louis Oosthuizen 3&1. BLATTER WON’T RULE OUT Rerunning 2022 World Cup sports

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has refused to rule out the possibility of rerunning the vote for the 2022 World Cup if bribery allegations surrounding the original ballot are proven. An unidentified source alleged that FIFA members Issa Hayatou and Jacques Anouma received $1.5 million to vote for Qatar, according to evidence that was handed to a British parliamentary inquiry in London. Both men deny the claims. When asked by reporters if the vote for 2022 could be re-run, the UK Press Association quoted Blatter as saying : ‘This is an idea circulating already around the world which is alarming. We are anxiously waiting for these evidences or non-evidences in order that we can take the adequate steps. The newspaper has agreed that we will bring this whistle blower here to Zurich and then we will have an investigation of this’.

The Silent Monument By Shobha Ni-

halani

‘The Silent Monument’- the name sure is intriguing and so is the book jacket cover. The Silent Monument is a thrilling tale of an age-old scroll discovered in the hidden chambers of the Taj Mahal - one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The journalist (Parag Saxena) who finds the ancient artifact is murdered. His feisty widow Manzil is suddenly burdened with the deadly secret, the contents of which could rock the nation. She becomes the most wanted person in the country. The plot is not physically very deep. Metaphorically, yes. ‘The Silent Monument’ is not the Indian version of ‘The Da Vinci Code’ or ‘Angels & Demons’, nor is Shobha Nihalani India’s answer to Dan Brown. The plots differ, yet there are echoes. It is a very good read. Exciting, riveting, thought provoking.

Flip By Martyn Bedford One December night, 14-year-old Alex goes to bed. He wakes up to find himself in the wrong bedroom, in an unfamiliar house, in a different part of the country, and it’s the middle of June. Six months have disappeared overnight. The family at the breakfast table is total strangers. And when he looks in the mirror, another boy’s face stares back at him. A boy named Flip. Unless Alex finds out what’s happened and how to get back to his own life, he may be trapped forever inside a body that belongs to someone else. Questions of identity, the will to survive, and what you’re willing to sacrifice to be alive make this extraordinary book impossible to put down. The characterisation in this book is amazing. Flip is a fantastic body swap book but with a huge twist. Bedford’s language and descriptions draw you in and make you feel like you are right there next to Alex, experiencing everything that he is. An amazing book and a must read!

PICK OF THE MONTH Ian Fleming’s James Bond series Everybody at a point of time or the other, or may be still, have been fans of the James Bond series. The movies are worth watching a million times, so are reading the novels. The series consists of 14 novels (written by Fleming) namely - Casino Royale (1953), Live and Let Die (1954), Moonraker (1955), Diamonds Forever (1956), From Russia, with Love (1957), Dr. No (1958), Goldfinger (1959), For Your Eyes Only (1960), Thunderball (1961), The Spy Who Loved Me (1962), On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1963), You Only Live Twice (1964), The Man with the Golden Gun (1965), and Octopussy and The Living Daylights (1966). This novel marks the entrance of James Bond into the world. As the prototype novel of the Bond series “Casino Royale” has less action and more concentrated violence than the future books. Its mood is claustrophobic but its grasp of defined character is somewhat airy. Bond is not quite fully fleshed out - what we can grasp is that he believes himself a professional but often loses or comes close in both love and business. The other characters are also compelling - Leiter and Mathis are agreeable national stereotypes, while LeChiffre is the first of Fleming’s great villains - subtly monstrous and grotesque to the point of being king devils, not people. Fleming never wrote a convincing female character until he spoke in first person for the heroine of “The Spy Who Loved Me”. Fleming’s master stroke was his realization that a convincing adventure tale in the spy genre could not arise from the conflict between the ideologies of the Soviets and the West. It was too much of a gray area and Fleming did not want to be a political writer - he wanted to create myths and fairy tales for adults, and he turned out to be the best writer of the century in doing so. So Fleming decided that Bond would not fight against Communist spies but rather the organization of terror that made them spy - evil fantasy villains - so he created Smersh as Bond’s opponent. He would use them as villains until the lessening of cold war tension enabled him to create an even less political replacement - Spectre.

CUBISM

lifestyle

The revolutionary style of modern art

By Shalini Jena

Cubism is the first abstract style of modern art which came into the panorama of notable painting styles as an attempt to bring a new vision. Artists needed a more radical approach - a ‘new way of seeing’ that expanded the possibilities of art in the same way that technology was extending the boundaries of communication and travel. So Cubism is that art started by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braques in 1907 as an endeavour to revitalise the tired traditions of western art which they believed had run their course.

art

Although many times this form is reckoned as being a move away from reality, it was in fact made to present realism more precisely. If you can notice the patterns in which they are painted, you will see they are disarrayed in a peculiar fashion that many times is indecipherable and this is where its speciality lies. By showing different sides or facets, as if you are walking around an object the multi-faceted images make the subject more plausible. What made Picasso’s paintings so exceptional remained a mystery for a long time, until the pros declared his forte on expressing human emotions in the most elaborate manner. Some of his famous works are Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, Three Musicians, Ambroise Voilard (1910) and Girl Before a Mirror (1932). In 1937, Nazi bombers destroyed the Spanish Basque town of Guernica, mercilessly killing 1600 unprotected citizens. The Spanish general, Francisco Franco agreed to let the Nazis do this in exchange for military aid in the Spanish Civil War. Picasso’s reaction of horror to the brutal event stimulated his symbolic depiction of “Guernica”. In Cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analysed and re-assembled in an abstracted form. Instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist limns the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent them in a greater context. Often the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles, removing a coherent sense of depth. The background and object planes interpenetrate one another to create the shallow ambiguous space, one of cubism’s distinct characteristics. The invention of Cubism was a joint effort between Pablo Picasso and Braque, then residents of Montmartre, Paris. These artists were the move-

ment’s main innovators. A later active participant was Charlie Juan Gris, who made a very famous cubist painting of Picasso in 1912. Picasso was initially a force and influence that persuaded Braque by 1908 to move away from Fauvism, yet another form of modern art. The two artists began working closely together in late 1908–early 1909 until the outbreak of World War I in 1914, from when the movement spread quickly throughout Paris and Europe and now their work is spread in the best museums and art galleries all over the world.

Angelica reveals to Jack that the fountain’s water must be drunk from chalices once belonging to Juan Ponce de León and that one chalice must contain a mermaid’s tear. Whoever drinks the fountain’s water with the tear will absorb the previous and remaining years of the person drinking from the second cup. Knowing this, Blackbeard heads to Whitecap Bay, where he traps a mermaid. A captive missionary, Philip later falls in love with her and names her Syrena. Barbossa meets Jack in de León’s ship while searching for the chalice and he, then admits that he only wants to kill Blackbeard for capturing the Black Pearl and causing him to amputate his own leg. He and Jack devise a plan to defeat Blackbeard and steal the chalices from the Spanish camp nearby. Meanwhile, Blackbeard tricks Syrena, who has fallen in love with Philip, to shed a tear, which he collects then, leaves her to die while forcing Philip to go with him. Jack meets up with them and at reaching the fountain, Blackbeard and his crew are attacked by Barbosa and the Spanish, who have

Jack foxes Blackbeard into drinking from the wrong cup while Angelica drinks from the other, killing Blackbeard and saving Angelica. However, suspecting she may try to avenge her father’s death, he strands her on an island, intending for a passing ship to find her. After much bantering they both declare their love for each other, but Jack still leaves her on the island knowing she is untrustworthy. He then meets up with Gibbs, who had used Jack’s compass to find and take the shrunken Black Pearl where they set forth, hoping to revamp the pearl back to its shape. The fantastic graphics featured during the mermaid attack, electrifying background music whenever Jack is involved in an action sequence, his signature dawdling walk and rib tickling expressions are going to make this watch, a memorable one! During the post-credits scene, Blackbeard’s voodoo doll of Jack was washed ashore on the island that Angelica was left on, where she finds it and this might open for another thrilling adventure, hopefully the fifth part of The Pirates of Caribbean.

review

According to a prediction, Blackbeard was going to be killed by a one-legged man and apparently it was Barbosa. So he set a sail, forcing Jack into his crew to the fountain where he can circumvent the prediction.

been sent by the king to destroy the fountain, believing it an abomination against God. Barbosa stabs Blackbeard with a sword laced with poison, but Angelica is also wounded by it. Barbosa then steals Blackbeard’s sword, which allows him to telepathically control the Queen Anne’s revenge and escapes alongside Blackbeard’s former crew. Philip, who is wounded, escapes and returns to Syrena and frees her. Syrena finds the chalices, gives them to Jack saying that her tear should not go wasted and returns back to take the dying Phillip underwater, to heal him.

he infamous Captain Jack Sparrow is and will always be perhaps the most excellent pirate ever. And in this thrilling fourth part of action packed adventure - On Stranger Tides, Johnny Depp is back to his iconic role. The movie starts with Captain Jack Sparrow’s sojourn in London where he has to locate his imposter, who was recruiting a crew in London to search for the legendary Fountain of Youth. Jack escapes from the hands of King George II who wants him to guide an expedition to the fountain and Captain Hector. Soon Jack discovers that the imposter he had been looking for was his own former lover Angelica, who was also the daughter of a ruthless pirate Blackbeard.

Who is going to ride the horse?

pets

If you’re purchasing a horse that will be of use to the whole family then you need to take into account the riding level, size and weight of all possible riders. You need to select a horse that can easily accommodate the biggest rider among you but won’t be inclined to throw off an inexperienced rider off his back.

How old should the horse be? A slightly older horse for instance may be used to being able to graze free in a large area and being handled by competent riders. If you only have a small stable and little riding skills to be speak of, such a horse is obviously not the ideal choice for you. A foal, on the other hand, may not have any such considerations but it will however require efficient care and professional training from its owner.

Fact :

Thumbelina is the world’s smallest horse, she was born in the Goose C reek Farms in Missouri on May 1st, 2001 and is only 17 ½ inches tall.

What difference does gender make? Owning a mare will allow you greater rights in all future offspring. Having a stud is mostly suitable for experienced riders. Geldings on the other hand are ideal for riders with skills at the beginner level.

What color horse would you like? The skin color of horses is generally any of the three: black, brown or white.

How much are you willing to spend?

Expect to spend a considerable amount of money whether you wish to purchase a horse for riding or working purposes. Make sure that you consider the costs of feeding, caring and grooming as well. If you don’t have a suffi-

cient budget and space at home to build a stable for your horse, you will have no choice but to use the services of a boarding stable. 30 JUNE, 2011

Tugela Waterfalls in KwaZulu-Natal

Is the world’s second highest waterfalls where the water tumbles down 2,789 feet. The most spectacular trail is to the top of Mount-Aux-Sources, which starts at the Sentinel car park at Witsieshoek via Phuthadjhaba from where it is a relatively easy climb to the top of the Amphitheatre. However it does take about 4.5 to 8 hours round trip depending on fitness level. You can gain easy access to the summit via two chain ladders which is the only day hiking trail which will take you to the top of the Drakensberg escarpment and to the head of the Tugela Falls. The last part of the hike to the Tugela Falls is a boulder hop. A little chain ladder takes you over the final stretch from where you have a stunning view of the falls rushing down the Amphitheater in a series of five spectacular cascades.

Safari At Kruger National Park

One of the largest game reserves in Africa and perhaps the best Safari destination! This National Park has the rarest wildlife species, viewing which is more rewarding, as the vegetation is sparse and animals are drawn to the waterholes to drink every morning and evening. The park is a part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere, an area designated by the UNESCO, as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve. The is one of the most multi-cultured places in the world and is famous for its harbor and its natural setting in the cape floral kingdom, which include well known landmarks like Table Mountain and Cape Point. There are over 70 peaks above 1,000 feet (300 m) within Cape Town’s official city limits. An often quoted fact is that there are more indigenous plant species just on Table Mountain than there are in the whole of the British Isles. The weather is always good with natural setting and well-developed infrastructure. Many tourists also drive along Chapman’s Peak Drive, a narrow road that links Noordhoek with Hout Bay, for the views of the Atlantic Ocean and nearby mountains. It is possible to either drive or hike up for closer views of the City Bowl and Table

Mountain. Reaching the top of the mountain can be achieved either by hiking up or by taking the Table Mountain Cableway. Due to the city’s unique geography, it is possible to visit several different beaches of the city, in the same day, each with a different setting and atmosphere. Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is known for its colony of African Penguins. The Atlantic coasts are well equipped with a vibrant strip of modern restaurants, cafes and bars, which are accessible to the beach at Campus Bay. 32 JUNE, 2011

Flora constitutes 1982 species. Out of the 517 species of birds found at Kruger, 253 are residents, 117 are non-breeding migrants, and 147 are nomads. All the Big Five game animals are found at Kruger National Park, which has more species of mammals than any other African Game Reserve (at 147 species). The Park holds over 48 tons of Ivory in storage. Rare species like African Buffalo, Wild Dogs, Black and White Rhinos, Bushbacks, Impalas, spotted Hyenas, Waterbucks, Bushbucks, Greater Kudus are found in high numbers here apart from many reptiles and fish. To have a safer and memorable Safari and avoid any probable chaos, its suggestible to hire a guide to this park as they would know how the animals behave and how we have to respond back. The Park has 21 rest camps, two private lodge concessions and 15 designated private safari lodges. The concessions are parcels of land operated by private companies in partnership with communities, who outsource the operation of private lodges.

‘’Take care of what you eat and what you eat will take care of you’’. Following a diet you also exercise for a healthy body. Similarly, eyes also require simple exercise.

Eye exercise • One of the simple and natural ways of exercise is to blink! Blinking gives rest and relaxes your eyes. While gazing, your eyes are continuously at work and are stressed. To distress, just blink your eyes. • Similarly, if you have tired eyes you can close your eyes for three to five minutes. It soothes and reduces the pain. • When you are getting through time, follow the below mentioned steps to bring radiance and vivacity to your eyes. • Roll your eyes clockwise then counter clockwise, blinking in between each time. • Hold your thumb in front of you at arm’s length. Move your arm towards right and then bring back to center. Try the same towards left side with left hand thumb. Repeat it 5 times. Now, move your arm slowly to your nose and then back to the arm’s distance. Repeat it for 5 times. Follow your thumb with eyes until you can keep it in focus. If it goes out of focus, blink your eyes and refocus. Don’t stress your eyes. If they seem to be stressed then close your eyes for a minute and stop the exercise. If you are trying the exercise for the first time then repeat it for 2 times. Once habituated, you can repeat it for five to eight times. • Make up to down movements, left to right movements and vice-versa. Be sure not force your eyes further than they want to go in any particular direction (or you risk making your vision worse) • Always finish by palming. Join your hands and rub them together until they feel warm. Close your eyes and cover them lightly with your cupped palm. Avoid applying pressure. You can repeat the palming three times and also close your eyes for five minutes, lie down and relax. These exercises keep your eyes healthy and minimize eyestrain.

He has received many accolades in the fitness industry.

What is health? Health is all about being positive and strong in your mind and body. The mind and body are both interrelated and keeping both strong is essential to health.

What do you mean by exercises? Exercise is physical activity that is planned, structured and repetitive for the purpose of conditioning any part of the body. Exercise is used to improve health, maintain fitness and is important as a means of physical rehabilitation.

What is the basic purpose of exercises? A well-balanced exercise program can improve general health, build endurance and slow many of the effects of aging. The benefits of exercise not only improve physical health, but also enhance emotional well-being

What is warm-up? Warming up prior to any physical activity does a number of beneficial things, but primarily its main purpose is to prepare the body and mind for more strenuous activity. An effective warm up also has the effect of increasing both your heart rate and your respiratory rate. This increases blood flow, which in turn increases the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the working muscles.

Which exercises are done for warm-up? 1) General warm up The general warm up should consist of a light physical activity, like walking, jogging, easy swimming, stationary bike, skipping or easy aerobics.

oppose the force generated by muscles. Weight training uses a variety of specialized equipment to target specific muscle groups and types of movement. Weight training strengthens bones, helping to prevent bone loss and osteoporosis. By increasing muscular strength and improving balance, weight training can reduce falls by elderly persons as well

Which exercises are done for abs? 1) Bicycle The bicycle was ranked as the best ab exercise by the American Council on Exercise because it uses every muscle in your abs to create a strong, lean torso. Make sure you pull your abs in (draw your navel towards your spine) and keep them contracted throughout the movement to protect your back. Don’t hold your breath and go slowly so you can really feel it! Do 10-16 reps.

What is cool-down? Cool down consists of the following • 5 to 10 minutes jogging/walking - decrease body temperature and remove waste products from the working muscles • 5 to 10 minutes static stretching exercises Static stretches are more appropriate to the cool down as they help muscles to relax, realign muscle fibers and re-establish their normal range of movement. These stretches should be held for approximately 10 seconds. An appropriate cool down will:

2) Static stretching

• Aid in the dissipation of waste products - including lactic acid

This is a very safe and effective form of basic stretching.

• Reduce the potential for DOMS

3) Dynamic stretching

• Reduce the chances of dizziness or fainting caused by the pooling of venous blood at the extremities

Finally, a correct warm up should finish with a series of dynamic stretches. However, this form of stretching carries with it a high risk of injury if used incorrectly. It should really only be used under the supervision of a professional sports coach or trainer. Dynamic stretching is more for muscular conditioning than flexibility and is really only suited for professional, well trained, highly conditioned athletes. Dynamic stretching should only be used after a high level of general flexibility has been established.

What is weight training? What is its main purpose? Weight training and resistance training are essentially the same. Weight training is a common type of strength training. It uses the force of gravity in the form of weighted bars, dumbbells or weight stacks to 36 JUNE, 2011

Jolie-Pitt & their six children

Why did they adopt?

S

By Shalini Jena

ushmita Sen embraced Renee and now Alisah, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt adopted three out of their six children, Madonna matted herself into a big time trouble and court cases, but her decision to adopt two kids did not falter under any circumstances. So what is it about the adoption fever? Celebrity Couples and mostly single women desiring to raise the child alone‌ Whether it is altruism, love or just self-interest that influences their decision? But first let’s talk about the upshots of the celebrity decisiveness to raise babies. Because no matter how many litigations they have gotten themselves into, it is all about bringing up a new life, a life that was uncared about and a life which was going to be worth living from then. Actress and Humanitarian Angelina Jolie has mounted an impressive record of personal commitment, travel, financial contributions and resources on behalf of the millions of people being torn from their homes worldwide, in the face of war, conflict and oppression. She applied for adopting Maddox in 2002 when she had visited Cambodia for the shooting of Tomb Raider. In 2005, six month old Zahara too was taken in by Jolie. In the early 2006, Brad Pitt adopted both of them and in 2007, three year old Pax, who was abandoned at birth in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam joined the Jolie-Pitt clan. When asked about her family, she acknowledges with pride that the love for her three biological kids is no more than that for her adopted ones. She is confident about her decision and has managed to outwit all the legal issues which seemed to come around. In fact people from Ethopia had claimed the parenthood of her daughter Zahara but that did not shake her off and they were anyways proved bogus. She and Pitt also apprised Madonna with legal issues when the 52 year old Hollywood heartthrob went into trouble during the adoption of one year old David Banda of Malawi. The court raised doubts in the process of adoption as the child’s father was alive, but too poor to keep him. In 2009, she decided to adopt yet another Malawian baby girl, Mercy James and again landed into trouble when Mercy’s 24 year old biological father who had abandoned her 15 year old deceased mother in fear of disgrace, claimed that he wanted to be a part of his daughter’s life. Despite being a mother of two children, Madonna was adamant to have both the adoptions legalized. All our favourite celebrities have all in all more reasons than just being enrapturing on screen, to be respected about. Hugh Jackman, Liz Taylor, Meg Ryan, Ewan Mcgregor, Sheryl Crow, Sandra Bullock and Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman are some of the renowned, queuing up the long list. For those who take the celebrity altruism sceptically, they must know that the adoption spree is not any new Hollywood trend. The late actress Elizabeth Taylor was a mother of three healthy children when she adopted two year old Maria of Germany in 1964. Actress, singer and author, Julie Andrews adopted two orphaned Vietnamese girls, Amy and Joanna, with husband Blake Edwards in 1974. The kids were victims of the Vietnam War who were brought to the United States for medical attention. The moment the couple laid their eyes on the little ones, they said they were enchanted. Despite their busy schedule, they make sure to spend as much time as they can, with their children. After all, Julie Andrews got it right, ‘Children are children, no matter what their background is’. And of course, love is love, it can only be shared. But the most hexing story is that of Mia Farrow’s adoption chronicles. The actress, Humanitarian and singer has altogether 15 children, out of which 11 are adopted. And she had had five of them when she was a single mother. She is an exemplar for many who have the pas-

sion to do something for the society, the greatest contribution of being capable of sharing love, tender touch and quintessential care. These celebrities whose work is worldly applauded tell us that they do not take the responsibility of another life because they have conception problems or they don’t want to go through the phase of pregnancy. These decisions come from the cognitive processes of thinking and not any random whims. They take this big step because if they have the potentiality, both on the financial and emotional backdrop, then why not conjure up a life that has been forsaken and left in the lurch… And it is not just celeb couples we are talking about. Angelina Jolie has adopted Maddox and Zahara as a single mother and so did Meg Ryan in 2006. Singer Sheryl Crow also embraced Wyatt in 2007 and Levi James in 2010 as a single parent. Following her was Sandra Bullock who brought Louis home in 2010, but before the adoption process was over she had already divorced Jesse James and now says that, ‘Louis is the only man in her life’. But when it comes to the talk on single mothers, there is an exquisite Indian celeb who deserves more than just mention. In 2000, when Sushmita Sen was 24 year old, she brought Renee home. Now that has mellifluous story behind it. She had decided on the name

But the Paediatricians said that Renee was not fit and might have mental disabilities after the age of one. And this is when her decision to have Renee fortified further. She visited hospitals, ran errands with adoption papers for months, called her family down to Mumbai for mental support, to take care of her child when she was away shooting and assayed to spend all her free time with her. Soon she became Renee’s Mom instead of a foster mom. As the doctors had advised, there were people who were always around Renee. ‘The standard rule was that as soon as she woke up everybody would chat with her nonstop.’ She now speaks fluent Marathi, English, Bengali and Tamil. Really, Renee did take another birth in the form of Sush’s daughter. And now, after ten years, she wished to be a baby’s mother all over again and adopted three month old Alisah in 2010. A child is the most wondrous speed breaker in a person’s life. Raising a life, feeding him or her, nurturing their present, dreaming of their future, working, earning and living so that they can live a happy and content life, is all in all a wonderful feeling. But in our country, being a single mother is always a big deal which is clearly depicted in the most recent Bollywood feature ‘I am’ under Afia’s story played beautifully by Nandita Das. Her role tries to explicate that if a woman wants to be a mother

her responsibility. ‘The horrors of foeticide and rampant child abuse are not just screaming news headlines for me. They’re voices which scream from inside me’, says Preity when asked that why did she exclusively chose girls and says that she would adopt even more every year on her birthday and take care of them till they are of age. More celebrities are coming up with ideas of adoption and Celina Jaitley would also want to be a part of it after her marriage with Peter Haag in September, 2011. It is a dream come true for her as she has always wanted to adopt a child from North-east of India. Even Tollywood is not very far from the growing list. Pawan Kalyan, the telugu cinema Power star is planning to adopt two orphan kids as his wife took his biological kids away from

him after their fiasco and ultimate divorce. then she need not get married for the wrong reason. There is always an option. Adoption or artificial insemination, the life that becomes entirely dependent on us is all that matters. Filmmaker Steven Spielberg who gave us Schindler’s List, adopted African-American children, Theo and Mikaela, through the public child welfare system with wife Kate. For a long time now, they have been actively involved in a campaign to find permanent homes for adoptable children in foster care. Actress Diane Keaton became a single mother in 1988 when she adopted a ten day old baby, Liam. American actress and singer, Michelle Pfeiffer adopted Claudia whose mother was a young nurse in New York and could not afford to raise her, and this was just before she married Kelly with who she gave birth to a baby boy. But who else other than the dimple queen of Bollywood, Preity Zinta broke all bars and adopted 34 orphan girls from mother miracle school in Rishikesh. She doesn’t intend to be a sleeping parent and promises to meet them at Rishikesh two times a year, because they were now

Children might be of any race, any bloodline or any nation; they all have a life that breathes, sees and dreams of living it, fabricated with love, care and basic necessities and not just few means of survival. These people whose work we adore and many others, tell that there is nothing more beauty than being a parent, nothing more than enduring for someone else and nothing more than making a life worth living.

HOW TO MAKE A GUY LIKE

YOU!

Glossy lips and uber-hotness might get you a guy’s attention, but when it comes to the hit- by- the- truck feeling (in a good way) there are less obvious factors that play around the part. Guys tend to have deep seated fears about commitment that might stop them from pursuing a woman any further and so they are instantly attracted to her who has personality traits that put away the fear in him. Now here are some tantalizing traits in a woman, such that the only thing your ideal man has to be afraid of is falling in love with you too fast. Ignore Him

By Shalini Jena

After Five Minutes

You have just met this implausible awesome guy who doesn’t have that vexing ego that others bother you with. At this time, you start showering your attention to him and eventually scaring him a bit. Don’t be deceived by his everlasting smile please! You are better than that. So what is the smarter move? Don’t act impressed. Now doing this you not only assure him of not pressurising him, but also makes you slightly out of reach. PAY AS MUCH ATTENTION TO HIM AS OTHERS AROUND YOU. Now if he tells you that he is from oxford or has won the Grand Slam (you are so lucky!) don’t start wowing or raising big eyebrows. Play it cool, maintaining a low key tone and ask him questions like, ‘So, why did you decide to go there if you had to come back after all?’ This triggers his competitive instincts.

Be Comfortable With What You Are Trust me! You might be the hottest chic he has ever met, but if you are uncomfortable in your skin, with your body or style I mean, then it can be big time turn off! Your confidence and sensuality will hold him off from using that who-is-your-daddy-look but also give him an eye that you are no less dominating than him. If someone told you little games like playing with strands of your hair, or brushing fingers on your collarbone doesn’t work, then they are wrong. It totally does!

Talk About Your Passion Now let me tell you this. You don’t make any impression by showing something that you are not. Or by never letting him know what you exactly are. So, the moment you start talking, start with you what you love. At the first go he must know that you are not a woman who he calls up to ask ‘wassupsweety’ and gets the reply, ‘as usual.. Bored..’. If there is something you love so much that you can miss your best friend’s wedding for that. Then don’t hesitate, just spill it out. Guys love passionate women and yes, you don’t have to invent new mania for that. Let us say you like to cook a lot these days, or watching classic movies for a change or just love playing It Girlon facebook, then just tell him. So you see, he takes you as a girl who loves to have fun and do interesting things every weekend which keeps the dopamine flowing.

Show Off Your Blithe Attitude You don’t want to go on a few dates and end up ignored or avoided, right? Well, you see, guys go gaga over fun loving girls who smile a lot, but they are also afraid that the second the commit to the girl, they turn into one of those bickering couples. SENSE OF HUMOUR WITH PLAYFUL ATTITUDE is important! Even if you don’t have a humour sense, no worries, just don’t give him the serious come-get-me-I-will-break-jaws-look. They would like a girl who laughs easily and appreciates common sense. It gives them the impression that you have a positive spirit around you. Lets say, you spill the juice over your lap while getting up for washroom. No need to freeze and avoid his gaze, look into his eyes and just laugh it off.

He is so sweet.. listens to everything I say...

Most of the lovely couples we see around us, tell us the story of how she got him hooked at the very first sight. It is like, takes hardly few minutes to like someone or not and everything you say tends to be based on that light. You are at a good health. So stop slouching and stand tall. But that includes keeping your head slightly lowered so that you seem approachable and MAKE LOTS OF EYE CONTACT. Because eye contact can create intimacy with someone we barely know.

First Impressions

Get Flirty

Seductive and flirty are not synonyms, if you know what I mean. Lick your lips once in a while, because if you do it frequently he might catch your move and the last thing you want is him to be amused for this reason. Pull back if he tries to touch you, nit abruptly but with a smile on your face. A guy’s light touch does not mean anything except that he might be hitting on you, which in this case is a good thing. If he suggests a date on Tuesday, then turn him down because you are busy. You don’t have to make him run after you and fix a date two days later instead and make him feel you changed your plans around to spend time with him.

why can’t she shut up for a while!

Confide In Him Please don’t mind, but the cliché I-don’t –know-why-I-am-telling-you –this - secret is not happening. It is true that by sharing your deepest feelings, insecurities and fear, you tend to get super close super quickly. But then avoid talking about past relationships by spilling all your secrets at once. Take some time to confide in him and wait for him to give something back. But then, funny secrets like ‘I never told anyone this but I just love eating peas when I am at work’. There is nothing to worry about this one, but you make him promise never to let this out of him. Without letting out your feelings, you somehow trust him and that makes him feel good.

Please Listen

Walk This Way

Movies show, how a quiet, down-to-earth guy falls in love with this crazy girl who never stops talking. Talking is a good thing, but please let him talk too. Ask him about himself and his life. Do not be uncomfy to ask him basic questions that you do not know about his work. He will love the fact that you are not embarrassed by ignorance and are keen to learn more. Shy girls- a guy does not want to do all the talking. In fact he loves asking questions and making a girl feel wanted and listened to. So chat with about your life, making him feel good that he does keep you engaged.

Women have developed ways to get and keep a man’s attention as we’ve evolved, and this walk is one of them. How to explain the right proud stiff pompous gait? Well, here it goes. Heads up, shoulders pulled back and chest takes the lead. Arms swinging loosely back and forth, while your hips swivel from side to side such that your weight is more in your heels. The whole thing is like a mantra and once you get it the stride pays off big time! This is no seduction technique, but sends a subliminal message to onlookers that you are in control of your body as well as your life. Put this confident walk everywhere you go and trust me, its gonna make a killer impression!

Allow Him To Know It All Himself When he asks you about your life just talk about your life. Tell him what honours you studied but tell him your college’s name only when he asks, no matter how excellent it is. If he asks you about hobbies, tell him if you like to play Tennis, but don’t tell him that you have played in the state level. Don’t give him a chance to raise his eyebrows. If you have already wooed him, then he will definitely want to know more about you, and by any rate will research, by talking to mutual friends or by Google-ing your name. And when he learns about your achievements or talent, it will impress him more than it would have done before if you had told him all, because now he thinks you are down to earth and modest. TALK GREEN, LIVE GREEN, GO GREEN! By Khushboo Choudhary

‘It was beautiful of course, I couldn’t deny that. Everything is green - the trees, their trunks covered with moss, their branches hanging with a canopy of it, the ground covered with ferns. Even the air filtered down greenly through the leaves. It was too green - an alien planet’, describes Bella Swann about her living place, in the book Twilight. Having such greenery around, in your habitat must be a pipe dream. 48 JUNE, 2011

ho wouldn’t like to be covered with the shades of the trees? Just imagine! A new sunrise after a depressingly dark night, the first rays of a promising sun penetrating through your windows, the sun beam sprawling all over in the air, the melodious whooshing of the leaves, the birds singing in their most joyful mood, the fresh air to inhale while jogging, reinvigorating us through the day with its simple presence and freshness. Well, all this seems wonderful when we dream about it. We wish our residential place to be the same. But why forget that this demands population of trees. We beg for a change, nag about our surroundings, but not a speck of help for change do we apply. We grimace seeing the streets with garbage, avert faces to foul smell, look at mosquitoes breeding over the stagnant water. We reside in concrete forest, sacrificing the nature’s sylvan and lushy greenery. And still we desire to live in provident and life giving environment. Today’s environment best suits our desires. It’s totally turned into a business-like, cluttered and daringly acceptable by anyone. There are few changes which must be made in today’s time. The foremost being, bringing back the nature, to it’s beautiful self. With this vision, young nature enthusiasts from various colleges in Hyderabad started an NGO named Planet 3 Protection Alliance (P3PA). The brain behind the idea of starting an NGO with Green as primary agenda has come to Mr. Ravadi Kantha Rao. The love towards nature made him start this. Getting idea is as simple as going to Dominos and buying a pizza, he says.

er and better place to live in. He added, ‘There are many International Organizations, which have been working for green globally. But I didn’t find any NGO which was active in Hyderabad. This led to the emergence of P3PA.’ It’s amazing to see the youngsters taking keen interest in the protection of environment apart from their fun times. This strengthened the basic formation of the NGO and helped them in various plantation drives in Hyderabad. One of the active members of P3PA, a college student Mr. Krishna Chaitanya says, ‘It is a non-government non-profitable organization started by a group of engineering students of Hyderabad in December 2009. So far we are done with 7 plantation programs through which we have planted thousands of saplings involving hundreds of volunteers. We are proud to announce that the first green run in Hyderabad called ‘HARITHON’ (5k run) which had been organized by us and we are looking forward to extend our services in all possible ways.’ A small step for a greener Hyderabad - Harithon is a green run organized by Planet 3 Protection Alliance on February 20th, 2011 to promote eco-friendly ways for a better living. Harithon aimed to make people involve in fulfilling their social objectives and owning responsibilities in society by making them take initiatives required at their level in saving the environment. Moreover running alone isn’t enough for good health, running in today’s traffic would do more damage than help. So having greener surroundings is important as well. And this green run aims to protect the environment for giving the world a better tomorrow. Kantha Rao shares - ‘Make your contribution count! Go green! Save environment! Come leave your green footprint for a greener Hyderabad. Do little from your side and see a bigger change.’ When quizzed on the name of the event Harithon, he said, Harithon was derived from Sanskrit. ‘As soon as this idea came to my mind, I have shared it with all my folks, most of them responded positively. Then I realized that I can go with the idea. Initial step towards starting an NGO is coming up with a nice, unique name. At last, we have finalized Planet 3 Protection Alliance.’ This is one inspirational story of a college-goer, who stands for a green-

In Sanskrit , Harith means Green, in Hindi, Hara and Hari means Green, in Telugu Haritham means Green. And other three meanings are Harith + On = Green On, Hari + Thon = Green Run, Har + ith + on = Everyone + this + Shuru Karo (everyone start this). JUNE, 2011 49

He also says, the name of the organization is unique. It was suggested by an IIITian Mr. Bandi Chaitanya. It comes from the fact that in Solar System there are eight planets. Among those, Earth is considered as 3rd planet based on the distance from sun. P3PA is an alternative name to Earth Protection Alliance and also this name does not object from taking up any issue universally acceptable.

not take an oath when you cannot stick to it. With the drastic climatic changes, I feel this should be a sign of warning about the forthcoming disasters due to Global Warming. So do take an oath to serve mother earth on WED and please stick to it’, Chaitanya concludes. At a basic level, you can compost by simply burying kitchen scraps in your garden. Secondly, have greenery at your home. In a simple way, you can have plants housed in the balcony or have a compound. It not only is beneficial for health and environment, but also doubles the look of your house.

For once, we had corporate world joining hands for natural world. TATA projects, Brandstrategy, Cricketrevolt, etc were the official partners of this event. The Govt. of Andhra Pradesh was not behind in lending their support. AP Pollution Control Board and AP Tourism along with others were the sponsors. Any process that causes adjustments to a climate system from a volcanic eruption to a cyclical change in solar activity could be described as creating ‘climate change’. Affecting the climate is through the release of heat-trapping Greenhouse gases into the air. China, USA and India are the main nations responsible for such climatic changes through the reckless fossil fuel burning, such as CO2 which causes warming by adding to the greenhouse effect. Yes, the world is getting warmer! One can experience less warm climates at greener areas unlike at concrete forests, where pollution is being caused by emitting carbon dioxide from automobiles, industrial processing, by burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. According to the recently conducted survey, living in Hyderabad is equal to smoking 15 cigarettes per day and 70% of pollution is due to vehicles only. Ignoring climatic changes will certainly affect GDP Growth rate in near future. Each country should spend every year, at least 0.5% of their annual GDP to ensure smooth GDP growth or else we would have to pay a heavy price in near future, if ignored. Save green, reduce carbon foot prints and minimize the amount of resources you consume. Wonder what is on June 5th? It is World Environment Day (WED). What are you contributing to planet Earth on this day? Helping hand or a nagging mouth? Chaitanya states, ‘In the present era no one cares about the Environment and it’s sad to know that people hardly know when the World Environmental Day is. So, I want to take up the initiative of educating people about WED. I want to educate people about what they can do to the environment and also get associated with an NGO to get the pleasure of serving mother earth”. Kantha Rao continued, “P3PA may organize a plantation drive on the occasion of WED, it is still on the drawing board’. ‘My humble request to everyone - please do

Other smart ways :

When nature gives you enormous light then avoid the artificial ones. Turn off lights and fans when not needed.

Tell your friends and colleagues the importance of green. Contribute your inspirational stories with others. Every minute is right for a new beginning. Make your and your next generation proud of you.

Try borrowing books instead of buying them, unless it’s required. Save water! This is as important as breathing. To maintain a proper balance of nature and for surviving of humans this is a must.

Flowers are presumed to be the divine gifts. The soothing fragrances of the flowers mesmerize the senses of one and all! And it is evident to all, that girls love flowers. And I’m sure, even if you aren’t a girl there definitely must be some kind or variety of flowers that you adore. Apart from looking beautiful and drawing people’s attention, these amazing gifts of nature have several benefits which most of us may not be aware of. What do you know of your favourite flower(s) or the precious-potted flowers in your garden? Well, I have for you a list of them which bloom well this season, some basic facts you should know and their uses. Aster - Aster flowers, also known as the frost flowers are one of the preferred choices for the flower arrangements in summer, fall and winter. DID YOU KNOW? The root of the Aster flower can be used to make a wine and is also good for treating Sciatica. The blossom itself also has a number of medicinal properties, one of which, according to classical medicine, is as a treatment for snakebite. Carnation - These pretty flowers in shades of red, maroon, pink and magenta bloom atop compact mounds of foliage usually grey-green, blue-green or deep green. Flowers bloom prolifically in early summer, but some may re-bloom in fall if the spent flowers are removed. They make a terrific border or edging plant and also look great planted in mass. DID YOU KNOW? Carnations, when given in flower arrangements, can be used as the main flower or as an accent flower. Carnation oil is used in aromatherapy and scented candles. The petals can be dried and used in potpourri. Frangipani - The flowers of the Frangipani come in gorgeous rose-pink color brushed with bronze. Frangipani flowers are highly scented during nights and often used in bouquets. They have wonderful tropical essence and are propeller shaped, with a delicate yellow center melting into the creamy white outer petals. DID YOU KNOW? The umbel like clusters of Frangipani at the end of terminal branches open over several weeks and each day the ground is carpeted with fresh frangipani flowers which are gathered for preparing the concrete. Garden Roses - With almost 120 varieties, roses are a classic favorite. Roses span the color spectrum with varieties available in all shades of reds, pinks, purples, oranges, corals, peaches and whites. Roses are found in almost all the parts of India. They are widely grown in the Valley of Flowers and Mahim Nature Park. DID YOU KNOW? Rose perfumes are made from attar of roses or rose oil, which is a mixture of volatile essential oils obtained by steam distilling the crushed petals of roses. An associated product is rose water which is used for cooking, cosmetics, medicine and in religious practices. Gulkand which is made by the mixture of rose petals and white sugar in equal proportion acts as a laxative. Dried Rose petals called Pankhuri are used during the hot weather for preparing cool drinks. Many roses have been used in herbal and folk medicines. Roses are a favored subject in art and therefore used in various artistic disciplines. They appear in portraits, illustrations, on stamps, as ornaments or as architectural elements. JUNE, 2011 51

Jasmine - Endowed with exotic perfumes, Jasmine flower is one of the most beautiful and fragrant amongst all the 15,000 flowering plant species in India. Majorly used as decorative flowers, these are also used for medical motives and religious purposes. DID YOU KNOW? The Jasmine flower forms a vital ingredient of almost all Ayurvedic medicines, owing to its diverse curing qualities. Specifically, it is used to remove intestinal worms. It is considered to be an apt and biological cure for Jaundice and other venereal diseases. The flower buds help in treatment of ulcers, vesicles, boils, skin diseases and eye disorders, the leaves extracts against breast tumours. Drinking Jasmine tea regularly helps in curing Cancer. Its oil is very effective in calming and relaxing. Sunflowers - These large field-grown flowers have 2 - 8inch diameter. Short petals surround a large disc. Petal colors are pale or golden yellow, orange, red or bronze; discs are brown, black, or green. Thick stems support single and double flower varieties. DID YOU KNOW? Sunflower oil, extracted from the seeds, is used for cooking, as carrier oil and to produce margarine and biodiesel, as it is cheaper than olive oil. A range of sunflower varieties exist with differing fatty acid compositions; some ‘high oleic’ types contain a higher level of monounsaturated fats in their oil than even olive oil. Sunflowers can remove toxic waste from the environment. Sunflowers absorb toxic metals such as arsenic, zinc, lead, uranium and strontium-90.They have extensive root systems, and so they can reach deeply into polluted water and extract large amounts of toxic metals.

Ikebana

Ever wondered what this art of flower arrangement is, how it came about and how sophisticated an art form it is? Everybody loves flowers and we often gift bouquets to friends on several occasions, but you would be mistaken if you thought that Ikebana was merely putting flowers together in a container. Often, it is seen that the leaves and the thorny stem or branch are discarded and the flowers are put neatly and symmetrically in a vase, but in Ikebana such a thing would be a blasphemy. It is the art of beautifully arranging cut stems, leaves and flowers in vases and other containers (evolved in Japan over seven centuries). It is an art, in the same sense as painting and sculpture are. To say that Ikebana is a full-fledged art does not mean that it is esoteric. The greatest creations in the field are apt to be made by highly skilled experts, but, as in painting and sculpture, there is plenty of room for amateurs. Almost anyone with a little time and inclination can acquire sufficient skill to make beautiful arrangements. Still, as in the other arts, it is necessary to master certain fundamental techniques before proceeding to free creation.

Koyo Sharmila Agarwal best known for her accomplishment in traditional Ikebana is practicing it more than nine years. Recently she had a solo ikebana exhibition with thirty one ikebana arrangements at State Art Gallery which got a whelming response from friends and media. She has participated in various national and international exhibitions and this deepening interest took her to Taipei, to attend the Asian Regional Conference in the year 2004, to Tokyo to attend the World Ikebana Conference in 2006, followed by a trip to Paris to attend the European Regional Conference. Currently, she’s the secretary of the “Ohara School”of Ikebana, Hyderabad Chapter and working as joint treasurer of “Ikebana International” Hyderabad Chapter. She has taken workshops at various places like schools, organizations and at Public Gardens. She takes the fragrance of Ikebana through flowers to children of all ages. She enjoys teaching children for, “they are keen and quick learners and their enthusiasm is gratifying.” She also did a four day workshop with a group of under privileged children and hopes to do some more classes with them.

Me and My Family…

kinship

By Aditya Tej

From Tata service providers to the proud dealers of Mercedez and Skoda Mahindra in the whole of Andhra Pradesh, her family has come a long way! On a candid talk with Tulip Magazine, Babita Jhabakh mentions about how it all started, on attaining success, family significance and her approach towards life… ME AND MY FAMILY…

I live in a joint family, something which I always dreamed about, before marriage. I got married when I was just 18. I am blessed with two sons, Jeet (who is pursuing his BBM at Boston University) and Lalit, who is in his schooling days. I always find immense support from all the family members in any aspect of life. My kids support me a lot for my ideas or if I want to achieve something new in life, irrespective of its outcome. I share a wonderful relation with my in-laws, who are more like my own parents. My entire life revolves around my family’s success and happiness. Both my husband (Mr. Parsva Kumar) and I do not have many friends, so all the family members are like friends for each other. I do not attend many social parties, so my husband and I spend more time sitting together and invite home our friends and relatives. In office, I look after the General Administration. While at work, my husband and I do not interfere with each other and back home, we do not prefer talking anything about work. I am a very practical person and take things the way they come. Every morning, I wait for my husband to wake up and have breakfast together. More than just a passion or what I love to do, I take it seriously! I love to cook for family, friends and guests. Be it eat-

ing or cooking for others, I love Italian cuisine. Husband and kids are not too particular about food and they eat anything which is nutritious and tasty. But I make sure to cook the best dishes keeping in mind, their daily routine. There is no particular place which I love to hangout. Restaurants with peaceful and calm ambience appeal. There is a magic in togetherness. Therefore, more than where I hangout, the company I have matters. I do not watch movies outside often as I rather prefer relaxing at home.

BEST TIMES OF MY LIFE…

The days I welcomed both my kids into this world were memorable. I consider myself blessed and lucky to have found a caring husband and family, to whom I owe all my success and happiness. 54 JUNE, 2011

MY PASSION TO TRAVEL…

Lucky to have visited many beautiful places in the world and Europe in particular. Every place I had been to, was with my family. Venice, Italy, Germany, Australia and Switzerland are holiday destinations anytime in a year. I love New Zealand’s nature, raw beauty and adventure sports they have. Istanbul (Turkey) will always remain one of my all time favourite places for its historical monuments and mosques. Visiting Barbados just to watch one of the matches of India, during 2007 Cricket World Cup, was memorable. I am a travel enthusiast and I tend to like any place which is serene and peaceful. We own a tea estate in Ooty which is of 100 acres. I holiday there often with brother and mom. Visit to Tirupathi once or even twice a year is a must, which is more like a ritual. Vaidhnodevi is one such place as well. I would love to make a trip to Andaman Islands as well.

LOVE FOR MY FRIENDS…

I like making new friends at weddings and social gatherings and believe in eternal friendship. But somehow it does not happen frequently, because of my busy schedule. I turn my acquaintances to lifelong friends.

5 THINGS YOU DID NOT KNOW ABOUT BABITA – 1)

I treat all the kids as one and show equal love.

2)

I am talkative and I do not hide things to people who are close to me.

3)

I am a gadget freak and have around 150 pairs of footwear. Aldo, Mochi and Inc.5 are my favourite brands. I have a huge collection of Saris and apparel too.

4)

I hate being alone. I love to be surrounded by crowd.

5)

If I do something good to someone, I do not expect them to do the same to me. I believe in giving more than taking.

FUNNIEST THING I DID…

It was 10 years back. My brother caught me driving the sports car Mazda on top speed it was sold the next day. (successfully!).

INTERESTS FOR AUTOMOBILES…

It may sound crazy, but I love driving cars fast and one day, want to try bungee jumping in New Zealand. My passion towards cars developed post my marriage and the whole family has interests for automobiles. Someday, I would like to participate in a car rally, though it’s a small one.

If I have to buy a car, it will always be either Mercedes or Skoda (not because we are the dealers of them). I always admired the manufacturing way of these brands, right from the beginning. They have unmatched style, looks, capability, design and comfort.

MY MANTRA FOR SUCCESS…

Believe in yourself. Give more, but expect less. If you do, you are sure that you would what you want, sooner or later in life. When you give something good to someone, you will certainly get it back in the same amount. My husband and I are not much into fitness because we believe in attaining happiness, which itself makes us feel good inside.

ON SPIRITUALITY… I am less religious but more spiritual. I believe in Karma and destiny. I can pray to any God and all Gods are equal to me. Waking up listening to Bhaktambar Stotra daily feels so good. It helps us to have a great start for the day and also is a source for eternal peace. It’s such a lively, fresh feeling which stays within us all through the day. I love classic old songs of Kishore Kumar, Mohd. Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. 56 JUNE, 2011

By Shalini Jena

hen the toys look boring, the stories too long and books a nightmare, here is the chance to do something out of the file! Create your own miniature garden with the help of all the kit present right at your home or garden (your neighbor’s if you don’t have your own!). Follow the simple steps below and design a beautiful creation with your own hands! YOU WILL NEED • • • • • • • •

Fishbowl or glass jar of any size Small stones Horticultural charcoal Potting soil Plants of your choice (see ideas at bottom) Scissors Water Decorative rocks and figurines

HERE’S HOW • • • • • •

Wash the glass container in hot and soapy water. Rinse and dry completely. Create a one-inch (2.5-centimeter) layer of stones on the bottom of the jar. Add a half-inch (1.3-centimeter) of charcoal. Spoon in a two- to three-inch (5.1- to 7.6-centimeter) layer of potting soil. (Pile soil higher on one side to make plants visible from a side view.) Dig small holes for the roots. Take plants out of their pots, remove extra soil from the roots and trim damaged leaves. While the roots are still moist, place the plants in the holes and pat soil over the roots. Place taller plants in the back. Dampen the soil. Do not overwater. Decorate with pretty rocks, animal figurines or a garden gnome. Place in indirect sunlight. Add water when your terrarium gets dry.

DO HEED THE TIPS • • •

If your terrarium has a small opening, use chopsticks to position your plants. Prune fast-growing plants, so they don’t outgrow the terrarium. Pick the right plants. Almost any houseplant will grow inside a terrarium. For best results, use plants which need about the same amount of water and sunlight, such as :

The city of Hyderabad was founded by Quli Qutub Shah V on the banks of the river Musi. A fact many are not aware of is that the city was earlier known as Bhagyanagar, named after the ruler’s beloved, Bhagyamati. During the rule of Mir Qutub Uddin Khan, Hyderabad was declared as the capital of the Deccan territory. The love for jewellery in Hyderabad synchronizes with the founding of the city. And the old city is the only place in our city where ornament and clothing stores have been put up for over a century! Exploring the pulchritude of this wondrous city for, of course, what it is noted for - ensemble and ornaments is amusing. And out of the hundreds of lanes and by-lanes, Lad Bazar is well known to all. This compact, colourful and lively (calling it so because of the crowd presence) street has a nuclear establishment of shops in every shape and size – literally! As soon as you walk in, you would find the shopkeepers requesting you to have a look inside their respective shops. The bangle stores have a marvelous set up. The collections and the range are tremendous! There are bangles in every size, right from the extremely thin ones to the thick ones. They are sparkled and studded on glass or metal base, or even simple ones are available in the stores for you. They are available in every colour! The range varies from Rs.100 – Rs.2000. “If someone wants a separate design or wants the bangle set to be above Rs.2000, they are suppose to place an order with their specifications.” is what Mr. Sattar, Owner of Diamond Bangles, had to say.

This street also has terrific artificial jewellery stores! The jewellery sets are grand and have a realistic look to them. They are crafted with fineness and the range varies from Rs.500 to anything! You can find both light and heavy weighed jewellery, which also includes the funky chains, bracelets, rings and earrings for toddlers and teens. There are also stores which have been put up for over a century, likeA-H Zariwala, this store has been put up for over 150 years and currently the 4th generation is taking good care of this splendid store. This store is famous all-over for raw materials in cottons, silks, banarsi, zardosi, net and brocade. They have a wide variety to pick from. Apart from the raw materials they also deal with readymade salwars, lehngas, sarees, khadda dupattas and dress materials. They are also known for their kamdani works. Suliman, owner, proudly says, “We are obliged and proud to have regular customers not only from the city but from all over the country!” And, the 108 year old Ram Chandra Mohan Lal Ladda- Don’t go on the size of this shop because you would be surprised to know that this is the only shop in our country that sells kinari made of real and pure Gold and Silver. This pocket-size store has a variety in gota, lace and lampi, and is also famous for mukesh ke haar (garlands). The price of the kinari varies according to the market rate of Silver and Gold. Also, stores famous for the variety of borders are instituted. You can find borders ranging from as little as Rs.50 to as much as Rs.25000. Apart from simple to fashionable and light to heavy border you can also purchase clothing decorative. Currently the Parsi borders are in and look elegant on plain coloured sarees. Mr. Yazakkaroon Al Khadir, owner of Afzal Miyan, tells, ‘People mostly buy according to their budget, because we have all the colours available in every range.’ This is what is there in the closet for you and I am sure by now you might have started making plans for some worthy shopping and if you haven’t as yet, plan out now! It definitely is worth the buy.

RISE IN FUEL PRICE! SHOULD THERE BE A RISE IN POCKET MONEY TOO?

hen the salary augments, prices rise and so, the sixth pay commission was a fairer option. But when the fuel price heightens, why doesn’t the size of our pockets? But amongst all this, if there is a hike in the McDonald menu we are asked to cut off our daily diet, where do we go when the our power source, the fuel prices go for a raise and that too every month. The hike is no doubt a vexing concern among the citizens. The sporadic drop down in our lunch money is nowhere in comparison to the steady hike in the petrol and diesel prices, all over the country. So, here is what a few people of the city have to tell us regarding the rise and the hole forging in their pockets Vikas Gupta of Badruka College says - “There is no need of hike in our pocket money. Instead of using fuel extravagantly, we should use fuel efficiently without wasting it much, as it is one of the scare resources on our planet .We should learn to save fuel and make a difference.” Pooja Jain student of St.Francis says “Start freaking out less to avoid pocket money problem”

Vikitha Naidu student of CBIT with a true spirit says “Save more... to spend properly... every rupee matters” Azmi Mohammed of Lords Institute of Engineering and Technology says – ‘’Obviously! There should be hike in pocket money also. Else our whole pocket money will go only in our vehicles.’’

Yashi Gupta student of Nasr School says - “Pocket Money should increase...... Warna toh waat lagegi’’ Tarz Rabbani of St. Francis says – ‘’For hike in petrol you need not do anything because it’s not what we wish for, but for the rise in pocket money you need to work hard and I do not think many will opt for this and wait till the higher authorities look into the matter’’

68 JUNE, 2011

Sunny Manghnani student of St. Mary’s Secbad says – ‘’Shift to diesel and feel the difference as it won’t pinch your pocket money and in fact, you will only save as it’s almost half the petrol price at this point of time. And regarding the hike in pocket money, there is no other substitute for hard work, which is channelized into the right direction, where your interest lies in. So the hike will be directly proportional to the hard work you put in.’’

Ishan Daredia working at DELL says - ‘’Increase in the prices is not proportional to increase in pocket money. There should not be a hike in the pocket money. This would make the students avoid loafing around and concentrate more on sports and education. Good for parents.’’ We should follow certain measures to keep our environment clean. Support for Green Revolution because we live in a highly polluted city. Before we make a comparison with other countries we must also learn how to contribute to our land. Effective ways to save fuel – Aditya Shenoy of Aurora Degree says – ‘’It’s simple! The amount our parents will earn would still be the same. I suggest people who haven’t bought two wheelers yet, to save some money and opt for a diesel car. Because as far as I know, the prices of diesel cannot be de-regulated as frequently and vigorously when compared to that of petrol. For the people who already have two wheelers, vehicle pooling, cycling short distances and usage of public transport (there are a/c buses now too) are suitable solutions.’’

Turn off your car in slow traffic and at traffic signals. It is estimated that you can save about 20% of fuel in this process. Minimize the use of brakes. The more frequently you apply brakes, the more fuel you spend. You can avoid braking by maintaining a constant speed of your vehicle. Encourage car pooling. It’s an effective way of saving fuel as well as reducing traffic on the roads. If possible, use electric-powered cars. Do not ride the clutch. Depress it only to change gears or when at a standstill. If you know you’re going to be stationary for an appreciable amount of time at a stoplight, switch the engine off. The amount of energy it takes to start the engine up is roughly three seconds worth of idling time, so anything more than that is a waste of fuel. Under-inflated tires can increase fuel consumption by 5%. Check your air pressure once a week. Changing the spark plugs regularly can keep your engine’s efficiency at its optimum. Take advantage of rolling resistance rather than heavy braking to help slow you down. This technique is one of the best for saving fuel – simply increase your braking distance. Regular engine checkups are a must – a poorly tuned engine can consume up to 50% more fuel than an engine in good condition. Avoid using the air-con at lower speeds, but roll the windows up and turn it on when cruising at high speeds.
