PIECE OF LIFE

If one reads down the history lane, one can notice that from every clan to every aristocra t family, they all had distin ct styles of dressing. This also includes they way they tattooed themselve s or even adorned their hair or their style of wear ing a skirt or a dress. And this has been running throughout history. Believe it or not, if one just look s into the history books, you’ll only be surprised as to the importance that was give to dress fashion. The Kings and Queens of erstwhile periods woul d often go to any extent to get their dresses seam ed in a way that is new in the eyes of the world. Looking at these instances , one can only agree to the fact that fashion is one of the oldest elements of history that never dies.

“It was my son’s dream and I had to support him. We knew it would be a little difficult because this has never been a part of our stream. There are no shortcuts to any place worth going. I still remember the joy when I held a copy of the first issue. The journey has been excellent! I am over-whelmed as Tulip turned one. Time flew by fast, as the magazine turned a year old now. It’s a special feeling! I am all excited and looking forward for more success and productive outcome for the time to come in future. HOLLYWOOD

EVEN RACHEL WOOD

E

Finally Admits

Evan Rachel Wood confirms in a magazine, what many have suspected for a long time that she’s a bisexual. “I was always into very androgynous things. Guys and girls, I’m into androgyny in general,” the actress tells the ublication, adding this trait attracted her to ex Marilyn Manson.”I think one of the things that freaked people out so much is that we looked so different.” On True Blood, Wood’s character is also into both genders. Then again, she’s also a vampire. “I’m opening the doors, I’m buying dinner. Yeah, I’m romantic.” Does Wood care with whom she ends up? Nope, she just wants to be happy, saying she’s up for anything with a nice guy, or a nice girl.

BROOKE MUELLER: Back in Rehab

B

Brooke Mueller has gone back to rehab, according to reports. The socialite refused her drug test on a particular day, that she was required to take as part of her custody settlement with ex-husband Charlie Sheen. This followed a week in which she allegedly went off the rails. There’s no hard proof of her binging on drugs, but that pawn shop sighting is sketchy to say the least, and Sheen’s lawyers are going to court, to raise the issue. A source close to Mueller tells a news channel somewhat vaguely that: “Brooke is doing fine, she is continuing with the rehab program she has always done.” That doesn’t mean all is well with her and her ex-hubby Sheen. “Brooke will not take a drug test until Charlie takes a drug test,” the source said. Brooke will comply with the deal until he stops talking about her in public. He’s been violating their agreement from day one and she’s had enough.”

LINDSAY LOHAN

L

Still on Guilty Plea

Lindsay Lohan’s lawyer is steadfast that her client will win in court. A recent report suggests her confidence level may be more moderate. Shawn Chapman Holley has asked the judge in her grand theft case how much time Lindsay Lohan will get by agreeing to a guilty or no contest plea. The eventual sentence was discussed last week in a secret meeting between Holley, Judge Stephanie Sautner and Deputy D.A. Danette Meyers. A source close to the case tells us the judge told both attorneys how much time she would serve, although word of any precise sentence hasn’t leaked. At worst, Lohan faces three years in a state slammer. She nixed a plea deal that would have gotten her just three months, but with probation as well. We all know how Lindsay does with probation.

A source present at the Star Hotel in Juhu where the shoot took place said, “Rensil needed Shah Rukh for three days, but the actor, who is busy with the post-production of Ra-One, took a look at Rensil’s script and said, ‘We’ll complete it on saturday night’. The ad was action-packed and had to be shot in different locations. It was accomplished in one night.” When contacted D’Silva he said he was still in a surprise. “I have shot ads with every other star in Bollywood, but this was an experience of a lifetime. His energy level is at the highest at night.” “The ad has a lot of action with stunts and speeding cars and Shah Rukh just breezed through it. PAKISTAN PLAN

P

IPL Equivalent

Pakistan’s players have not been a part of the IPL since its inaugural season due to the cold war between the two countries, but the PCB has plans to launch their own equivalent of the Twenty20 tournament, though they have admitted it will not be possible to host it in Pakistan. Instead, they want to host the tournament in Dubai, where Pakistan have played oneday internationals against Australia and South Africa, and the latter in a Test match. Sultan Rana, the chief of PCB’s domestic cricket department, told the plans had been in the pipeline for the last two years but the board had to delay it because of the attack on Sri Lanka’s cricketers during their tour of Pakistan in March 2009. We have first considered the idea a couple of years ago,” he said. “The documents were complete and we were all set to go, but the attack on the Sri Lankan team meant that we had to shelve all of our plans at that time. But the plans shall execute soon enough.

MCILROY REDISCOVER His range in Kuala Lumpur

R

Rory McIlroy unleashed one of the longest drives of his career as he made a good start to the rest of his golfing life with a first round, three-underpar 69 at the Malaysian Open yesterday. McIlroy was again the centre of attention after his nightmare final round in Augusta, but he coped with that and sweltering temperatures in Kuala Lumpur to finish five shots behind the leader Alexander Noren. It was not such a good day for Masters champion Charl Schwartzel. The South African bemoaned jet-lag and lost clubs as he carded a 73 after an early tee-time. McIlroy showed no ill-affects from a 25-hour journey to Malaysia and his clubs arriving late as he birdied three of his opening five holes. Playing alongside world No 1 Martin Kaymer (70), his drive on the fifth hole passed the 400-yard mark thanks to a favourable bounce.

T

BCCI Request on IPL Players

The relations between the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket, the Lankan government and SLC have decided to stick to their decision of calling back national cricketers, playing in the IPL, by May 5th . Early this month they had ordered the players to return to the country to prepare for the upcoming England tour. No meeting took place between the BCCI and SLC but Indian officials did speak to their Lankan counterparts on the matter and requested them to let their players play in the Twenty20 event at-least till May 15. But sports minister Mahindanada Aluthgamage and the Cricket Board (SLC) have decided to ignore the Indian request. A Sri Lankan Cricket source said on Wednesday that Aluthgamage, Sri Lanka Cricket and the national selection committee had lengthy planning on Tuesday on the matter. Accordingly some 11 Sri Lankans including the star players Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and the newly appointed Sri Lankan captain Tillakaratne Dilshan would have to take by the Sri Lankan decision.Aluthgamage has said that interests of Sri Lankan cricket was his priority and Sri Lankans would be sending a respectful explanation on the decision to the Indian Board. NARENDER PAL SINGH & PRIYA They tied knots for eight years now. They look still much in love and come out as a charming couple. Narender is a manager at Liquids pub and wife Priya a school teacher. There love story excites us and is a dream story for many. There love is the same even after their two cute children. Young as parents, young at heart and young as lovers!!

SANDEEP AHUJA & SUCHITA AHUJA

VIREN AGARWAL & SHIKHA AGARWAL

Marriages are made in heaven and the best couple who could define this is them. With an understanding to match their trust, they are a new couple who personally and professionally just click. They leave you feeling warm and enriched with their apparent love for the other.

SANJAY & RUCHITA SONI

It’s not about you or me it’s about US. After marriage, two individuals lead one life. They are just the same. They are truly made for each other. They are the main proprietor along with their elder brother of DREAMZ a well known brand of a diamond jewelry firm SAINATH JEWELERS. Though not blessed with kids; they believe they are blessed being with each other. Love is what they say in unison is the best gift they have give to each other.

Marriages has for ages been considered a very blessed bond. It is a precious relationship. They have definitely had a steady start with amazing compability to go with. Both of them are of the same zodiac sign Pisces, so parallel temperament and like-mindedness is bound to exist. It simply proves that God makes your partner the BETTER-HALF of you.

NAVDEEP & SONALI AHUJA You laugh you cry you share and he is right there – childhood friend! But wait; think if this friend of yours becomes your PERFECT LIFE PARTNER. Could there be any other gift one could ask for from God? With true smile and heart coupled with pure love for the each other which will remain forever is this couple. When the destiny is the same then the TWO strike the same path for a wonderful journey waiting to be walked by someone together.

MOGHNY & MOBINA KHAN When your love is new and true everyday then definitely the first impression one gets is of a newly married couple. They tied their knot six years ago but still love to fall in love with each other every day. They seem to be newly married couple just returned from their honeymoon. CHAITANYA & NEETA KUMAR Opposites attract!! Yes in relationship too as going by them. Neeta is calm and reserved whereas chaitanya is the social one who loves to make a lot of friends and parties a lot. There is an equivalent bond temperament bond between the two as they say. The story of bonding of two souls for lifetime makes for a perfect relationship. Trust and love is the mantra for them to keep their bond alive!

MOHANLAL GUPTA & RITU GUPTA

JAIDEEP & ALKA

When a girl is married all she desires is truthful and caring husband, is all what we know. But deep in her heart she tries finding her parents in her IN-LAWS. She longs for a fatherly love and misses being pampered. A relationship with special bonding of father in law and daughter in law is rare and exceptional. Mohanlal gupta, owner of mussadilal jewelers share one such delightful relation with her daughter in law, RITU GUPTA.

The strong bond and the maturity in a relation grow with the passing time. Through white and blacks, ups and downs 29 years of knowing each other and 25 of which were spent bonded in matrimony they have come a long way with a strong bond. Indeed, this has brought them closer together in love. Their beautiful journey can be described as joy and love. Currently Mr. Jaideep is the General Manager ISTA Hotel.

So is the case of the twins born to MOHAMMED KHALEEL, a civil engineer and TANVEER KHALEEL, a microbiologist are soon to be doctors, have high aims, they are concerned about the other but wait above all they are full of fun and social people. Someone has rightly said – “It’s double the giggles and double the grins and double the trouble if you are blessed with twins! “

NATASHA KHAN & KARISHMA BAGGA Every relation does have one connection- FRIENDSHIP. What more an individual can ask for when his family supports him like a friend and his friend turns out to be a sharing-world. The amazing friendship shared by them needs a mention here who have been friends for about two years but they describe their friendship as “FRIENDS FOR LIFE”. 34 TULIP MAY 01-15, 2011

LAVRAJ BHALERAO & ANIL KUMAR YADAV Life is partly what we make it and partly what it is made by the friends we choose. You are just what you are with friends. All your emotions are justified. Li’F’e without friends becomes such a LIE and yes this apart they’re the best secret-keepers and they just personify the aforesaid. Though busy with their respective lives, they resume from where they had left the last time.

METHOD Preheat an oven to 170 degrees C. Apply a light coat of butter to one baking dish with a capacity of two litres. Put the chocolate in a microwave-safe glass or ceramic bowl and allow it to melt inside the microwave, stirring after every half a minute interval; this might require you to stop the microwave and start it again at least three to six times. Take care not to overheat or chocolate will begin to scorch. In another large baking dish, that has been greased and dusted with flour, place the pieces of prepared brownie. In another large bowl, beat the eggs. Slowly add the melted chocolate, milk, brown sugar, caster sugar, eggs, vanilla essence and half the portion of almonds, whisking all the while. Take out the brownies when done, pour the milk and chocolate mixture over them and sprinkle with the remaining almonds. Bake until it passes the toothpick test, which will take about forty five minutes.

The best lipstick to use depends on the tone of our skin. You may also want to pick a lipstick for daytime use another one for nighttime. To further define the lips, apply a lip liner that matches the color of your lipstick. Another tip to try is to use a lip brush instead of applying the lipstick directly. This would keep the lipstick from smearing and the color from bleeding as well. Fair-skinned women would look great with lips touched with pinks, peaches and mauves.

INTERIORS The way we design interiors, define the place where you live or work. It does play a role in our professional and personal lives. Below given are a few handpicked, unique accessories which can be a part of interiors.

CUSHIONS Cushions make couches look attractive apart from giving support. Choosing the right cushion is important because if it does not match the color of the couch it pops out and looks gaudy. The number of cushions placed also makes a statement, while one cushion makes it look modern, two or three are more traditional.

CURTAINS This summer brighten your house with loads of sunlight streaming in. Use light colors for the curtains as this will block the sunlight and lets in only the needed amount. Choose the color for curtain as per the color of the wall and the placing of the window.

Buddha in Padmasana

A 2nd Century Masterpiece

Still a magnificent Beauty! By Shruti Mathur

History: Ajanta caves are said to be constructed in the 2nd century B.C. These beautiful caves are located in the state of Maharastra and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. There are in total 31caves and are ‘rock-cut caves’. There has always been a controversy on the issue of ‘which period were the caves built in?’ Some historians say that they were built during the reign of the Satavahana Dynasty while the other researchers say that they were built during the reign of Emperor Harishena of the Vakataka dynasty, who was a great patron of Buddhist architecture, art and sculpture. It is said that on 28 April 1819, a British officer of the Madras Presidency, John Smith, while hunting tigers, accidentally discovered the entrance to one of the cave temples (Cave No. 9) deep within the tangled undergrowth. Exploring that first cave, long since a home to nothing more than birds and bats and a flair for other, larger, animals, Captain Smith wrote his name in pencil on one of the walls, which is still faintly visible, it records his name and the date, April 1819. Shortly after this discovery, the Ajanta Caves became renowned for their exotic setting, impressive architecture, historic artwork, and long-forgotten history. 62 TULIP MAY 01-15, 2011

Cave 10- Stupa

ART

Architecture and Sculptures: The caves include paintings and sculptures considered to be masterpieces of both Buddhist religious arts, mainly consisting of Frescos. Frescoes are paintings which are done on wet plaster in which colours become fixed as the plaster dries. The Ajanta Frescoes have a special importance of their own. They are found on the walls and ceilings at Ajanta. The paintings reflect different phases of Indian Culture from Buddha’s birth to his Mahaparinirvana (death if the body of someone who has attained spirituality). The first cave was built on the eastern end of the horse-shoe shaped scarp. This cave has one of the most elaborate carvings on its facade. There are scenes carved from the life of the Buddha as well as a number of decorative motifs. There are three doorways: a central doorway and two side doorways. Two square windows were carved between the doorways to brighten the interiors. The walls are covered with paintings in a fair state of preservation. The scenes depicted are mostly informative, devotional, and ornamental. The themes are from the

Caves 2 - Wall Paintings medallion is skillfully carved, but the medallion itself is conventional. The painting of Bhikshu in this cave in the middle is done about in the 5th century. There is the rhythmic vitality in the line and boldness of drawing. The painting is almost like a sculpture. The folds of the garment, the rounded belly, and the calm on the face suggest a devote worshipper. The painting in the tenth cave shows the King with his Retinue, worshiping the Buddha tree. On the right wall are the series of large wall paintings. One scene portrays Elephants in the jungle while another One shows Buddha in his elephant incarnation. The Buddha in shrine of the eleventh cave is one of the earliest images at Ajanta. The important fact about this Buddha is that it is attached to a stupa. This means a compromise between stupa worship and image worship.

Pillar Sculptures Jataka stories (the stories of the Buddha’s former existences as Bodhisattva), the life of the Gautama Buddha, and those of his veneration.

In the seventeenth cave are the seven Buddha’s of the past with maitreya it seems the left side of the door was painted by different artists, using different colors from the painter of the right half of the door. The famous paintings of Indra and the Apsaras,

The second cave, adjacent to first cave, is known for the paintings that have been preserved on its walls, ceilings, and pillars. The cave is supported by robust pillars, ornamented with designs. The paintings on the walls and ceiling are similar to those of the first cave as they too depict the stories from the Jataka and life of Buddha. Paintings appear on almost every surface of the cave except for the floor. At various places the art work has become eroded due to decay and human interference. Therefore, many areas of the painted walls, ceilings, and pillars are fragmentary. They are didactic in nature, meant to inform the community about the Buddha’s teachings and life through successive births. Cave six was the first important cave of the Mahayana phase. The sculptors were probably copying wooden prototypes, or wanted stable supports, so they included one central pillar in their lower story. The simple octagonal pillars are bare, unlike the pillars of other caves, which have capitals and bases. There extensions at the end of the front and the rear aisles to enable pilgrims to circumambulate the Buddha’s throne. There is a Buddha image in the lower part of the cave. He is sitting with his feet squat on the base, in a rigid pose, only enlivened by the gestures of his hand and the flying couples above him. There could be circumambulation around the Buddha’s shrine. The porch doorway is simple with not much carved decoration except attached female figures. There is a medallion in this cave in the colonnade of the shrine vestibule. The couple in the

Scene from the Jatakas in the panel above the doorway of the cave are a lovely fantasy. The left wall of the twenty first cave, by the verandah, is the large statue of dead Buddha. The Buddhist calls this sleeping figure the Buddha in parinirvana. On the same wall, further ahead is a relief sculpture of Temptation of Buddha by the demon mara. And the list of the beautiful sculptures and paintings in these caves are never ending! If you are an art lover, you definitely must make at least one trip to this amazing place, it’s definitely worth it! MAY 01-15, 2011 TULIP 63

Sonakshi Sinha

After winning raves for Dabangg, Sonakshi Sinha ha s the pick of the lot -- Shiri sh Kunder’s Joker and Kick , Abba s-Mustan’s Race 2 and a Tamil film opposite Kamal Ha ssan.

sizzling damsel! Earlier, you were known as daughter of Shatrughan Sinha but after Dabangg you are known for your own work. How does that feel? It always feels great; I’m proud to be my father’s daughter and will always be. But people now know me for my work and the kind of person I am; and that makes me happy. Is success at your young age difficult to handle? It would have been difficult, if I didn’t have anything else to do. But I’m blessed with work in the form of films and endorsements. I’m the kind of person who loves to live in the present. Even six months after the release of Dabangg, you are one of the most talked about debutantes. It is a wonderful feeling to have been accepted in such a big way. I hope I can carry on and people are still interested in me, many more years down the line. You are paired with big stars like Akshay Kumar (Joker), reuniting with Salman for Kick and you also have a film with Kamal Hassan. Is it difficult to negotiate the pressure? Definitely, it is difficult. But personally, I work well under pressure. This is just a boost, it is an encouragement for me of sorts and it pushes me to work harder. When do we see you paired opposite younger stars? I am not complaining, you shouldn’t either. But again that opportunity hasn’t come along because everyone is busy doing something or the other this year. Hopefully, soon. These days, an actor’s success is evaluated by the number of endorsement one does. You have already totted up three brands -- Dabur Fem, Dyna soaps and now Provogue… I’m not complaining at all. I’m really getting good brands to endorse and I think this is the way forward. Is there any product that you won’t ever endorse? Actually, the media itself has made a not–to-do list for me, for example the bikini or the item song. You have already performed on stage at a film function. So is it true that you are scared of doing item numbers? I’m not scared of doing item numbers; I really like the songs that are being released. I wore what I was comfortable wearing on the stage show, and I do the moves that I am comfortable in … so I’ll do it if I’m comfortable. 64 TULIP MAY 01-15, 2011

What is your style statement?

COVER STORY

My first film projected me as a very Indian village girl, but that won’t happen in most of my forthcoming films. I have been born and brought up in Mumbai so I’m a very urban, cool, casual person. I love to wear my torn jeans whenever I get a chance. In which outfit are you most comfortable? I’m comfortable in both worlds -- I love wearing sarees, Anarkalis and my casual clothes as well. What is the maddest thing you have ever done? I did fashion designing for three years and then I became an actress. You have worked with Salman and are now working with Akshay in Joker. Have you given either of them any fashion tips? Both of them have been style and fashion icons in their own rights, so there was no need to give any kind of tips to them. But I did style Salman for one photo-shoot -- it was for (glamour photographer) Dabboo Ratnani’s calendar shoot where he was shirtless, but was carrying a shirt on his shoulder. The shirt was my idea. Who do you think is a bigger style icon -- Salman or Akshay? I think it would be Salman. Right now, both the masses and the classes follow whatever he does -- even things like keeping his glasses on the collar has caught on really well. Have you ever imitated anyone? Sridevi!!! Is your film with Kamal Haasan on? Yes I’m doing a film with Mr. Kamal Haasan, it is an honor for me that a talent like him has chosen me to work with him. We are going to start very soon and it will be a very good experience as it is a new language and a very interesting subject.

MAY 01-15, 2011 TULIP 65

COVER STORY

How has it been working with Akshay Kumar? He is a complete prankster; it is a lot of fun shooting with him. He moves around with plastic or rubber rats and pulls out a chair from under your feet. Are you going to miss Abhinav on the sets of Dabangg 2? Of course we all will miss him; he became a very dear friend in the process of the shooting. But I wish him all the luck. Dabangg2 is going to be directed by Arbaaz and I’m sure Arbaaz will also make a very good film. What about your career as fashion designer? That, unfortunately, has taken a back seat. Designing is a very demanding job; and so is acting. If I try doing both, I will be nowhere, so it’s better I stick to one. While speaking to your mom (Poonam Sinha), she said you will be launching your own label. My mom really wants me to launch a brand, but not anytime soon. I have studied designing and invested so much of time, but no education goes to waste. I will definitely do so some time in the future. Will you do small-budget concept driven films or are you scared they will affect your career? How does it affect your stardom? When hits and flops don’t affect your stardom after you reach a certain point, I don’t think a concept oriented film would. If I like the story and script, I would go ahead and do it. It has to suit my sensibilities. I have not been in that situation yet. As and when that time comes you will find out. Look at Aamir -- he has worked on Dhobi Ghat and he is still Aamir Khan and always will be. Since you belong to the film fraternity, did you have to go through fewer struggles? For me, the whole struggle was when people would ask ‘Oh she is Shatrughan Sinha’s daughter, what is she going to do? How is she going to perform? Is she going to perform?’ After the release of the film, they got the answer. It’s been a great journey for me. Everybody has their share of struggle, so have I. Everyday you learn something new. 66 TULIP MAY 01-15, 2011

Fashion is Ageless PIECE OF LIFE

By Deepa S K

If one reads down the history lane, one can notice that from every clan to every aristocrat family, they all had distinct styles of dressing. This also includes they way they tattooed themselves or even adorned their hair or their style of wearing a skirt or a dress. And this has been running throughout history. Believe it or not, if one just looks into the history books, you’ll only be surprised as to the importance that was give to dress fashion. The Kings and Queens of erstwhile periods would often go to any extent to get their dresses seamed in a way that is new in the eyes of the world. Looking at these instances, one can only agree to the fact that fashion is one of the oldest elements of history that never dies. MAY 01-15, 2011 TULIP 67

PIECE OF LIFE

In this world there are quite a many things than never die. Take for example traditions, religions, cultures, cuisines, natural disasters and many more. There is a famous saying that goes, “history always repeats”. And every time they reappear, they always fascinate people of that century. Such is the case of ‘Fashion’. What is fashion? Thesaurus defines it as style or trend. Fashion is one such world that speaks volumes more than just the clothes. It talks about the color, the quality, the texture, the shape, size and underneath them all, it talks volumes about your stature, your pride and prestige and most definitely your lineage. Coming to the present world, thanks to the ‘customer is the King/Queen attitude”, that common person can afford brands that once upon a time was a dream to our forefathers. Those bellbottoms and miniskirts in the pre modern age often made people wonder whether they would be able to get to wear. This made life challenging to all the tailors, to research up their sleeves and stitch the most ‘in thing’ of the year. So whoever thinks, a tailor’s job is of no importance, may need to twice about it. Imagine if there was no professional, then we would all be living the literal sense of Adam and Eve story, in the naked truth. Moving on to the fact the importance of Fashion, this has taken the whole world (at least most part of it!) by a storm. Take in the case of India; we have almost all international brands from a Gucci to a Versace to Armani making a handsome place in Hindustan. The good news is we get to be a global audience and the sad news is they cater only to a selected lot. Nevertheless, fashion has had its root in India, with its vibrant color and every corner of the country having a different tale to say, the Indian Fashion designers and making hay with this knowledge. The Bal’s, The Bhels’s, Rathore’s Malhotra’s can’t get enough of the rich culture of our land, that we such amazing piece of art, adorning our film Gods and Goddesses’. Post Independence, India has changed in leaps and bounds. And not to mention with the dawn of liberalization, the Indian market has been consumer focused. This has given scope to new rise of demands and this applies to the fashion industry as well. We now see a great platform of both traditional and western wears on the domain. Both youth and the elder one’s are comfortable to dabble away with both cultures. This is an amazing factor. On the contrary, we have heard many instances, very much in our land, where fashion has turned out to be a result of provocation and distaste. It’s strange how this very boon has another face to it. There have been places in our very own country that does not allow women wearing a particular kind of clothing or jeans 68 TULIP MAY 01-15, 2011

to be more specific. And the restrictions are even more, when we hear society crying in the name of traditions and certain religious beliefs, fashion gets the blow. Why does this happen? There is just too much that happens in society that sometimes, the society herself is in confusion. But we still need the very sense of fashion to drive us. It’s such a fascinating world in itself or may be another universe. There are many galaxies to this universe and so are many dreams woven. Heard once a fashion designer say, fashion exists even in the heavens, can’t us see the angels in shimmering white, the color of all purity, even that has a language to it. True to every word, the very sense and rhythm of what a human person will look is induced within each one of us and we our exterior selves is the visual version of what we are. You don’t believe me! Think of your DNA structure, from what the color of your hair is to the color of your eye is all well defined in a manner beyond human imagination. Therefore each one of us is created in a very distinct fashion, where our DNA, does all the permutations and combinations and hence all look the way we look now, and thankfully, we have clothes that add up our beauty. Imagine a life without these beautiful colors adorning our body. One of the first impression signals we send out is the way we dress. It speaks volumes about us. From the very colour we choose, to the accessories and the footwear we pull on. It’s an amazing fact as to how every piece that we wear is like a distinct language or dialect. And the beauty is how it all weaves in beautifully when we mix and match styles. An Indian kurta combined with denim jeans, speaks of a kind of carefree attitude of a person. This existed long time back and still is in fashion. Or take the way we beautifully mix and match a skirt with a shirt. It’s amazing how we infuse various cultural traditions into the life of a fabric to make it unique and stunning. The very colors of the whole universe can be found in the strings of our fabrics. And it’s also amazing how every color has a distinct nature and meaning and that every culture has a meaning of its own. For example black is mostly everyone’s favorite, black is sexy, powerful and portrays a very strange enigmatic attraction. The same black is also considered to be a color of mourning. Color like red defines love and also friction. But when these threads weave themselves into a garment, they tell a whole different story. It’s amazing how most of the population understand the language of dressing. There are people who dress well, there are people who dress over well, they are people those who dress clumsily and there are people who care a damn. And the amazing part is each one of them has a fashion sense of their own. To look good is just not about the good looks, but what you wear also defines. Yes, there is a fashion in every one of us. But maybe they do not go by the present trends. But still that is what we believe and that is what we love to wear and love to be. So does it really matter if we don’t follow the trends, like we know some sect of people, how they idealize and live every breath of the present trends? I’m not quite sure of that. So, is that a fashion trend at all? Even I’m not quite sure of that as well. So, here I am not suggesting anything at all. You decide what you want to wear. But let your fashion talk the language of your persona and not anyone else’s. You are capable to think and judge, so I’m not quite sure which Fashion guru you need follow, as planet earth has quite a many. Be your fashion guru and breathe within each fabric that embraces.

Campus BuZzz... Are reality shows Defaming the Youth?

I

watch Roadies just to see how Indian youth are being plundered of their talent in search for a virtual reality on TV. Truth is that the youth are wasting their energy for some quick money and some fame that they think would get by being on the TV. It is a totally prodigal attempt and I do not feel that this is the way anyone in their young age behaves. What the Roadies reality show is looking for is just TRPs (Television Rating Point(s) and making money by letting people watch their show. True, it’s a great stunt by MTV but it can be used to bring out the pluck and valiance in today’s Indian youth. The example of youth creating a lot of change in most Arab countries stands exemplary to the world that is mostly constituted by youth. I wish Indian youth focus their skills in the right direction and use them for a noble purpose rather than wasting their talent in the TV shows that have surfaced recently. India can see the end of corruption if the youth take an initiative and have the courage to enter politics. We need dynamic people who can take good care of our country and not the ones who care more about their pockets. “The Shows like Roadies, Splits Villa are Prodigal activities which are setting negative vibes on our youth Life which leads to waste of Time. We must realize that the owners of the shows who are earning TRP get whole credits are ruing our career .Television channels should also take some measures and stop promoting such shows and focus on Knowledge, health, which can make a change in our youngistaan society” says Vikas Gupta student of Badruka College of Commerce.

It would be a great deal if the TV is used as a medium to inculcate sound body-building skills and exercises for a fit and healthy body development of youth, sound rational thinking skills and tactics for survival as suggested by the great Leader of Modern Age Swami Vivekananda and many other monks like Nithya Shanti (check facebook page: His quotes will surely empower us in Positive way to life). Zainub Malik, Student of St. Francis says, “Reality TV shows are a Black Eye in the entertainment industry. Boys and girls get into the limelight for fame and money. The obscene language used in these shows does not affect not only youth but also the school children. The use of *BEEP* and release of uncensored versions of these shows have defamed the youth while chances of fame is less.” Apeksha Kothari exclaims, “Youth is drawn away by bribing for overnight fame!” If the kind of youth depicted in shows like Roadies (especially) is the role model of our country, then it’s high time we change the scenario and grow up! If the kind of passion depicted by the so called ‘Roadies’ exists in the youth for the betterment of their country and not for some fame or money, we would then surpass all the evils that are hindering India’s development. How to get it ‘Right’ for the ‘Night’

“O

omph”! Get that word right, imbibe it in your persona, and you’re all set for clubbing.

As for girls it’s always been about the dressing. It takes much to conclude upon what to wear for the much awaited fun night at the club. Dress or Jeans? Black or White? Hair tied up or let lose? I’ll help!

There are no compulsions, hence you should opt for a revealing, tough to handle dress if you’re not much of a dancer. Just enough to look tempting, drink pretty and stand sexy. Whereas, if you really like to shake a leg and sizzle the dance floor, a well fit pair of jeans that compliments your body type, teamed with a sexy yet comfortable top should be your safe bet. A dress could be a hindrance often if you want to be the ‘dancing queen’, since it could restrict your leg movements and keep you occupied with thoughts of taking care of your revealing attire. As far as color is concerned black is the least risky choice. Makes you look slim, sexy, is classic, sophisticated yet bold. Still if you want to experiment, go ahead with bright colors according to your skin tones. Electric pinks and fluorescent shades are head turners for the fair ladies. Reds, maroons burgundies, emerald green and wine shades would enhance the dusky beauties. For the hair styles suit your comfort. If you think you can handle the heat in this weather and plus your hair can stand the suffocating humidity at a club without getting frizzy then flaunt your locks. If not then keep them tied. Yet the best idea if you’re not sure would be to carry some clip or hair grip and tie them later once you realize your hair is bothering you. Accessorizing should not be heavy at all, unless you want to end up looking like you had been collecting junk since ages just for that club night! Stay away if you’re not sure. Bottom-line: Get up; get Dressed, Flaunt and Make heads turn. And if they don’t then make them regret it! Cheers to that club night you’re ready to hit now! Nikita Dixit MAY 01-15, 2011 TULIP 79

RELATION

By C Radhika

The word ‘relationship’ has originated from the word relation which in turn is connected to the word relatives. Today this word has lot of meaning and significance attached to it. We talk of relationship not only in relation to relatives but also family, friends and colleagues. But then maintaining relationship with relatives and friends who are of the inquisitive kind is a difficult assignment. They want to know the in and out of our lives. And when we do not disclose they get upset. They try to snoop and even go to the extent of stalking. They feel they should be the first to know everything and only they have the right to give first hand information about our lives to others. 80 TULIP MAY 01-15, 2011

Beware of such relatives who make it a pastime to peep into other people’s lives to gather information. Then they dissect the information to either ridicule the person or to make fun of him. We also are to blame for encouraging the gossip mongers among friends and relatives. Whenever somebody discloses some personal information about others, we drop whatever we are doing and listen with utmost interest even if it is a trivial matter. Why is it so? Even after we have so many sources of entertainment why does this gossip about other people’s lives rate first? And when the audience is ‘all ears’, the person who is releasing the news whether it is a rumor or a report feels as if on top of the world.

Last year I asked my sister to get a particular sari. After she got it, there was a slight disagreement on the color of the sari. After a year when I wore the same sari to a function, one of cousin asked me how come I wore a sari which I rejected. I was

shocked. It took me few seconds to recollect the connection between her statement and the sari. When I asked my sister she said she made a casual remark about my choice of colors and she haven’t even mentioned about the sari which she bought for me. I gave hats off to this cousin of mine who did a painstaking research about my choice, the new sari and then remembering it until she happen to chance upon me wearing the same sari. I think she enjoyed my predicament when I was unable to answer for few seconds. This was only about a sari. If there would have been a fight in my family, I don’t know how much mileage my cousin would have made out of it.

der special scanner to dig out news about their love affairs and elopement. If somebody has made losses in business or lost his job, it is again big news. The more depressing and more appalling is the news, it is more attentiongrabbing. We feel happy comparing ourselves with the unlucky person. But then if the news is about achievements and success, we feel jealous. If somebody’s son got into IIT, or someone has a promotion, built a house, got an ornament made, the news make everyone go green with envy. After there is a postmortem of the news, some related information is dug out to discredit the achievements. The comparisons keep taking place for which there is no end. Either we have to feel superior or inferior comparing our own lives with known people either friends, relatives or even neighbors. Being relatives give greater freedom to ask, prod or make remark in each others affairs. Friendship has boundaries and we can cross them only if we have a very close interpersonal relationship.

Fortunately as relatives we have moved away in search of living thus giving fewer opportunities to gossip mongers within the family. A visit, a social get-together, marriages etc are places where the information about relatives is exchanged, to which a little more spice is added and then carried forward through phones and emails. When it comes to friends and neighbors we

In the olden days there were joint families or most of the relatives lived in the same house or same village or town. So everybody knew about everyone. There were no secrets to be talked about. But as families moved out to different places, the natural urge to know what is happening within a family is not getting satisfied. But then when families come together to attend marriages or any other functions, the talk about personal matters take a forefront. A person who is in touch with many families and knows the latest happenings takes the centre stage. Others who are less fortunate fan him or her to get the cat out of the bag.

The topics mostly revolve around couples who are not getting on well, fights between in-laws, relations gone sour, divorce etc. Then come topics about health as who is not keeping well, who has so and so ailment, who suffered an accident etc. The girls and boys of marriageable age are unMAY 01-15, 2011 TULIP 81

RELATION

are more in touch and know about happenings in each other’s lives. We tend to share our happiness and sorrows with our friends. But then we never know there can be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A person in garb of friendship can gather intimate details of our lives and reveal it to the wrong persons. This can be a pessimistic person who celebrates at our sorrows and mourns at our happiness.

Some are obsessed with others’ lives and lifestyles that they go to any extent to copy them whether it suits them or not. For this reason they keep their eyes and ears open to collect what the other person eats, drinks and wears. Where he is planning to go for holiday and what he is buying. Again this obsession is to compare himself and to satisfy his ego that he is no less equal. There was this neighbor in our flats who never ventured out. But then she would be seated at the window and keep a tab on when her neighbor goes out returns and who are her visitors. When her husband returns from office, she will update him with the information whether he likes it or not. So small is her world that she has nothing else to talk about.

Can this person who always trespass into others lives and keep comparing be happy? Even if he or she derives pleasure out of others’ failures and misfortunes, can he be content? Ups and downs are part of life and a person who spends his lifetime comparing others lifestyles, fortunes and miseries is an unhappy person himself without realizing. How much valuable time is lost in judging other’s lives when we should seize opportunities to better our own lives. From others’ achievements instead of feeling envious we should take it as a model for our own improvement. From others’ failures we should learn a lesson as not to make the same mistakes. Let us try to curb our curiosity and not waste time listening to and discussing lives of other people and then comparing to our own lives. Let us preserve our sanity and peace of mind. 82 TULIP MAY 01-15, 2011
