Aerobics Aerobic exercise is physical exercise of relatively low intensity that depends primarily on the aerobic energygenerating process. Aerobic literally means “living in air”, and refers to the use of oxygen to adequately meet energy demands during exercise using the large muscle groups of the body such as the legs, back, gluteus, arms, etc. Aerobics includes strengthening of the muscles involved in respiration, strengthens the heart muscles, improves circulation efficiency and reduces blood pressure. It also improves mental health including reducing the stress and lowering the incidence of depression. You can burn up to 500 calories in an hour’s session. Whether you like to jump or jive, tap or tango, shake your belly or your booty, dancing is one of the most enjoyable ways to workout. Contemporary dancing is great for losing weight, maintaining strong bones, improving posture and muscle strength, increasing balance and co-ordination and beating stress. Practicing contemporary dance exercises can be fun and add a new twist to your workout. Dancing can be a good form of exercise to help your body warm up before strength training, it can also be a good option for cardiovascular exercise. Performing contemporary dance moves can help warm up your body before vigorous exercise. Warming up with a dance routine of at least 20 minutes can prevent injury during your workout. A lively dance routine can be a fun change from run-of-the-mill cardiovascular exercise. Dance moves work your body in multiple directions, providing more benefits to more muscle groups at once. You can burn up to 200- 500 calories in an hour’s workout. Contemporary dance is just not a workout but it is dance forms which will help you set free, express your emotions and relieve from all the stress of the modern lifestyle. Aqua Therapy A swim in the pool is always a great workout for the body especially during the summers. But Aqua therapy is an excellent low impact way of strengthening and toning your muscles while burning calories. Working out in water is also a lot of fun, and a variety of different routines can keep you motivated and enjoying yourself so you won’t dread the daily workout. Water therapy exercise programs consist of a variety of treatments and exercises that are done in a pool and may be specifically designed to provide relief of low back pain or neck pain. These exercises also serve to condition and strengthen muscles to help avoid future recurrences of back pain. Water creates natural resistance, which allows pressure on the joints and muscles to be displaced by the water. While the resistance of water makes this a low-impact exercise activity, resistance also helps to strengthen and build muscle. Because muscle naturally burns fat, this is the key elements to an aquatic exercise .You can burn up to 300- 500 calories per session depending upon the time and the intensity of your workout.

Contemporary Dancing

wellbeing

‘I have been into contemporary dancing since the past 8 years and it’s wonderful being a part of it. Contemporary dancing has very strong defined lines and is more like ballet. Contemporary dancing helps me set free, it’s a very expressive dance form which helps me express all my emotions. This form involves lot of extensions and this helps relieve all my stress. Most of all it helps me embrace my feminine side and teaches me to let go!’ Shravya Verma, Fashion Designer

Coach Vinay of Secunderabad Club says ‘In water the bouncing level is more and the pressure is less and this helps in vanishing all the pains in the body and helps in excellent toning. Aqua therapy is particularly helpful if you have severe pains and can’t work out easily on ground. Best forms of Aqua therapy include water walking, bending, arm rotation and leg beating exercise. These exercises help you relieve back pains, strengthen your legs and also tone your waist arms and legs.” Contact - Greater Family Indoor Club- 04066047622, 9032881304

FULLY FOOLED!!

You plan to be extremely careful when you’re friends discuss about different ways of making a joke of each other, yet when the day comes, you can’t help but squeak when they yell “cockroach”, or forget everything when someone suddenly faints in front of you, and when you get calls and messages from unknown numbers declaring your crush likes you back, or your friend’s life is in danger, you immediately react to these things. Only in the end of all this, when a session of laughter follows among all the people who were either involved in these pranks or just witness them happening to you, do you realize that you have indeed been fooled on April Fools Day.

The first day of April, as it is named is the April fools day and like the various days celebrated in honor of something or the other, this special day is in honor of the fools. However, like the women and men can be easily identified from each other, you cannot easily categorize or judge someone to be a fool or not because a person who has always outdone everyone by their wit can sometimes be the easiest prey to pranks on this day while

the easy targets turn out to be hard nuts to crack. This day is celebrated by everyone, the school going fresh pranksters, to the experienced college students and sometimes even the award winning pranksters of employees and housewives end up having their share of fun on this day. But, the bottom-line rule to April fools is “Pranks are to be enjoyed and laughed over. And the one who was the fool has an entire year to come back with a bigger prank. 20 APRIL, NOVEMBER, 2013 2012

When it comes to April Fools Day, I’m the one who dreads it the most. From the transparent tape trick to untimely alarms, from balls falling all over me from my closet to papads on my bed. I’ve had it all. The last time I decided to take revenge on my sister. I attacked the bathroom, her favorite spot. I took a clear plastic and wrapped over the toilet, between the bowl and the seat and ‘voila’ I was yelled at a million times and grounded by my parents for a month but it was all worth it. Reema Khimani, Dentistry Student

April fools is one of those days I really look forward to. I’ve been quite a prankster. One of my best memories was when I had offered my aunt an Oreo cookie by removing the cream and putting Colgate in between the cookie. She actually believed it was a new flavor of cookies launched by the company till she got to know she was fooled and the expression on her face after the realization was priceless. Sunny Manghnani, Student

Since school , I always ended up getting fooled by either someone at home or by friends. When I was in my 7th standard, I had my science exam on April 1st, and since it was my favorite, I prepared well. On reaching school early in the morning, I found my friends reading Social Studies. I was terrified. I snatched a book from a friend and read whatever I could in 10 minutes, just before I entered the exam hall, my friends burst out laughing. It was science indeed, I was totally mad at them, but then I still laugh over it, even now. Nidhi Gonnakutti, MBBS student

It was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life. My friend had come by and we had just begun talking when he suddenly complained of chest pain and fainted. I was completely shocked and had no idea as to what had to be done. Tensed as I was, I began pumping his heart with my hands, almost in tears telling him to keep calm and everything would be fine. As I was about to scream and ask for help, my friend began laughing, and that is when I realized, it was the first day of the memorable April. It was one of the most scary moments of my life, mad as I was, I was pretty sure that I would yell at my friend, but the spirit of celebrating fools day took over and within seconds I was laughing as well. It was a funny day. Tejas Agarwal, student, HPS Around 5-6 years ago, while I was coming back home, I got a plastic lizard and was searching to fool someone with it. I saw my mom working. I went and put it on her shoulder. For half an hour she was so engrossed in her work that she did not even realize. So I yelled, “Mom, lizard” and she freaked out and threw it away only to see me laughing. After that I had a great deal of scolding from her warning me to never repeat it again and that was my first and last prank on anyone. Sanjana Gulecha, Working professional

I had played a prank on my English lecturer. I texted all my friends saying she was expecting a baby and everyone were supposed to congratulate her and if possible get flowers or chocolates, perplexed, she came to our class to teach in the last hour and asked what all the flowers where for, we told her she was expecting. She got furious and yelled I am not married! I couldn’t help but laugh my heart off thinking about her reaction. The beauty of this day is that you can get away with all your pranks and frankly, the sole reason for the existence of this day. This makes me think, do we need a specific day dedicated to making pranks? Frankly, I wouldn’t wait for an ‘excuse’ to trick my friends. Well, that’s what friends are for! Ravit Kumar, student

I feel summer camps and events are fun places for kids to learn, explore and use time in a enjoyable way as they are busy in studies the whole year. I sent my daughter to Gurukul and Art of Living classes last year where she presented moral stories in form of drama which made a positive impact on her mind for lifetime. She is eagerly waiting to join this year. Today’s children are so energetic and enthusiastic that they enjoy learning new things. So I feel summer schools are a must. A nice vacation and half day free playtime is also a must. Karishma Manglani, Businesswoman and homemaker

More than simply putting flowers in a container, ikebana is a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. Contrary to the idea of floral arrangement as a collection of parti-colored or multicolored arrangement of blooms, ikebana often emphasizes other areas of the plant, such as its stems and leaves, and draws emphasis toward shape, line, form. Though ikebana is a creative expression, it has certain rules governing its form. The artist’s intention behind each arrangement is shown through a piece’s color combinations, natural shapes, graceful lines, and the usually implied meaning of the arrangement. Love Yourself First So Everything Else Falls Into Line

The season of love, romance, togetherness is always in air for those who know the true meaning of love. While love and being in a relationship are real special feelings and everyone wishes to experience it in their lifetime, being single is something that is highly underrated in our society. Before you could have a good relationship with anyone else, you must first have cultivated a good one with yourself. It’s essential to have a solid foundation of knowing and understanding who you are, and what matters most to you. The hard part for most people is getting to know that person when you don’t even know who you are yet. Yet, like a puzzle, it is something that takes time, patience and a lot of willingness to unravel the layers through trial and error. Things that will help you know yourself better: •

Look up the meanings of words that you’ve designated as your weaknesses and strengths

Learn to be humble

Keep it real, and try and be the person you want to be

Stop telling yourself negative stuff

Make peace with yourself

Keep learning and allowing yourself to change

Benefits of being single

NO EXPLANATION NEEDED: The first and the best thing about being all by yourself is you don’t have to answer anyone, not even yourself if you’re not in the mood. Whether you feel like shutting yourself in your room or having the back to back weekend parties, no one will ask you or stop you from doing what you like. You don’t have to answer anyone for eating, drinking, sleeping or even breathing. You get your dose of ‘fresh air’ minus the suffocation of being answerable for every minute of your life. PAMPER YOURSELF: Since you are single and in love with your own self, you can pamper yourself first. Girls, you don’t need to wait for a guy to surprise you with a gift every second day (that eventually stops after the first few months in the relationship) to make you happy. You can do that for yourself. And guys will not need their girls to make sure they’ve eaten, be their wake up alarms which after a point gets annoying when the girl starts ruling over your life.

26 APRIL, MARCH,2013 2013

FRIENDS REMAIN FRIENDS: Being single means no matter how ugly or clumsy or pathetic your friends are, they are still your friends and remain to be so, forever. You won’t have your girlfriend come and tell you not to be friends with a guy, she does not like to keep company for no specific reason, nor will you have your over possessive boyfriend come and tell you not to hang around with your childhood friend because he’s a guy and he makes your partner insecure. Without all the insecurity and tantrums, you can have a laugh with them and cherish your friends always. DRESS TO IMPRESS? Naah!: Your girlfriend will not pester you to cut your hair short or not get out in those extremely comfy shorts of yours, nor will your boyfriend interfere when you decide to wear a short dress to your best friend’s birthday. When you are all by yourself you can remain as you are, and be in your comfort zone without bothering about how much you need to dress to impress your partner especially when it’s a lazy day and you want to chill in your most comfortable trousers.

Warnings

Self love is not to be confused with self absorption, the narcissistic insistence on getting your own way through manipulating others and still feeling rotten about yourself deep down. Self love is whole and healthy - you treat others as equals, you do not use people as a means to your own ends and you feel good about yourself about 80 percent of the time. Reality suggests that you will feel rotten sometimes but a person capable of loving themselves well will bounce back a lot faster than someone who has little more than self-loathing as life’s guiding force.

Tulip brings you singletons from the city sharing their views on ‘Being single’! The best part about single life is the ‘freedom’ I have. In a lot of relationships, teenagers suffer from the insecurity and possessiveness of their partner which simply means, we are not mature enough to handle such a relation at this age. And even though these relationships help you learn about yourself, being single is more liberating in the process of self-growth. For me, singlehood makes me love myself first, be careeroriented and most importantly manage my most valuable assets-my family and friends. Truptika Kanjani, Student

Everyone has heard that you have to love yourself before someone else can love you. The reason for this is simple - our ideal partner is a reflection of us. I am a working professional who seeks in growing up the ladder as quickly as possible. And giving my best at work is a priority to me. I personally believe that if you are in a relationship, you can’t give your best at work. You are obliged to deviate from work quite often, either to talk about the way the day went or just to check on how things are going, what they had for lunch or what they are going to have. And as far as I have experienced, the best part of being single is that even when you are sick, you can concentrate on your health rather than giving hourly updates to another person. Care from someone really makes a person feel special, however too much of music to the ears becomes unpleasant after a certain point. It’s all about giving space to each other which mostly doesn’t happen in a relationship as you are expected to give or take frequent updates in a relationship and which is not the case when you are single. 11 Tips For Hunting

Antiques

Satpreet Kaur shares her tricks of the trades to show you how to survive the antiques jungle. When buying antiques the buyer has a multitude of ways to buy, including online internet auctions, local auction houses, newspaper and classified ads, antique dealers, etc. But there’s only one way not to buy your antiques and that’s, “Do not buy antiques unless you know what you are buying.” However, there is one Golden Rule when buying antiques. ’Only Buy The Things You Like’. Buy the best antiques you can afford and if it’s for your own personal use or collection. Always, buy the things that appeal to you directly. If something appeals to your sense of style or your idea of beauty, you will develop a passion for it. If you buy something you don’t like, it will sit and gather dust for generations, and you or your children will eventually sell it for pennies. 1.

When buying Antiques, always ask for discounts. No matter where you buy from, many professional dealers will have a code marked somewhere on the item that you’re interested in and this will tell them exactly how low they can go. Use your own judgment and always ask.

2.

Ask about damage and/or restoration. If you don’t ask, they won’t let you know. This information will help you keep your antique presentable, after all its old and need some care. You don’t want to get up one day and see it damaged.

3.

28 APRIL, 2013

Always handle the item. Get touchy feely, pick it up, put it down,

and pick it up again. Look at the bottom, the top, and the sides. Look from odd angles and use a magnifier to look close. Never be afraid to pick anything up in a shop, at an auction, on a dealers stall or at any other sales event. It’s your money you’re spending and you’ll only kick yourself if you miss a flaw, when you look again at home. 4.

Never offer cash when buying antiques. Until you’ve agreed a price for paying by cheque or credit card. Once you’ve got your maximum discount, get your cheque book or credit card out, then pause and ask if there’s any further discount for cash. You’ll never know, until you ask.

Always get a receipt. Even if you pay cash, make sure your receipt lists the items age, the material, any damage or restoration and its value.

6.

Look for the odd one out. The odd ones are usually the best bargains. Look for items that don’t belong, such as ceramics in a jewelers shop or stall, bronze in a silver dealers display. More likely than not the antique dealer or seller will discount the unsuitable item to move it on.

7.

Buying antiques from your local auction house. The profit is here. Get to know your antique marks and your local auction house. The bargains are there and in all categories. Increase your knowledge about auction procedures and become an auction bargain hunter.

8.

Buy antiques from auction houses and markets abroad. But know the local rules before you do. You may have to deal with customs and formalities, so know rules and your rights. Always make sure

5.

the seller or supplier marks the age on the receipt when you’re buying antiques. 9.

BEWARE of reproductions, fakes and forgeries. They are very good and they are out there. If you don’t have a collector’s eye, then you can be fooled with replicas and stories. People all around sell replicas of antiques and make a story around them so that buyers believe them. Usually people even shell out huge value for it, but it is only matter of time until you realize the difference between fake and originals and regret all of it.

10. Go for quality. Many antiques are all ready to fall apart, they might have all best look of old, but what’s the use of spending so much when it won’t even reach home safely, so go for things that can be maintained and are of good quality. 11. Pick off stragglers. Dealers always like to sell chairs in sets of four, six, or eight. And they charge a premium for supplying the whole

set. Individual chairs, though, go for much lower prices, and if you carry around a reference photo of the chairs you want, you may be able to build up a cut-price collection, chair by chair.

Once I regained consciousness, the young African- American station master came over with a bottle of water, went down on one knee and sang the first Para of a bollywood song called “Hey Shona”. When all of my baffled friends asked him how he even knew the song, he told us that he had a step mother in Yemen who once happened to be seeing this movie when he was around, and he remembered the song, and sang it for me when he realized my name was Shona. This is one of the freakiest things that has ever happened to me...not to mention flattering!

Morning: My morning starts at 7:30 with a light early morning breakfast of some fruits and milk. I workout for an hour at the Gym in my home. I usually do a mix of stretches, cardio and strength training. Then I get ready for the day, have my breakfast (thank God for soggy cornflakes!) and then by 9:30 I am off to work.

Travel: My job requires me to travel quite extensively with my senior colleagues. I have been attending the animation and entertainment markets, known as MIP TV and MIPCOM twice a year, for past 3 years in the months of April and October respectively. Both of these take place in Cannes, a beautiful city in the South of France. I also attended the Kid screen Summit that takes place in New York, every February. This gives me an immense amount of exposure to the Global Animation and Entertainment Market, not to forget the opportunity to discover new locations, cultures, and my favourite-food! When I do get the time, I try to do a short getaway to Goa or some other domestic locale with my friends (provided there is a long weekend of course!)

Work: I got done with my under-graduation two years ago and joined DQ Entertainment, which was founded by my father. DQ is an animation, gaming, live action entertainment - production and distribution company, which has one of the largest animation production capacity for Television, Feature Films, Home Video, Online Game Art, Visual Effects, mobile and next generation console games, in the world. I started off with 2 months of intensive training in various departments of the company. After that I started working on the International Editorial and Scripting team of Jungle Book Season 2, and Suraj- the rising star (currently playing on Colors), both of which are animated television series. I am also currently handling two big projects, one of which is being developed for a leading Chidren’s Network in India, and the other for one of India’s largest Film Production Houses. I work in close correspondence with extremely talented colleagues, under the guidance of highly experienced mentors. The Development Process for an animated series includes the conception of an idea, having this idea transformed into solid scripts, voices recorded, characters and Art concepts developed, content animation, music designed, etc. I am truly blessed for having gotten such a wonderful platform to gain experience and grow.

Evenings: It’s almost 7.30pm by the time I get back home and the long streesful day just makes me crave for some me-time. I do yoga for 45 minutes, especially a lot of breathing exercises, which helps me keep calm and keep the stress at bay. I have my dinner soon after, and then spend some quality time with family. My dad and I watch the news, discuss current affairs, market scenarios and what’s happening around in general. If my mood permits I take up a new book to read every couple of weeks or just sit by my pool and write my own content, derived from hours of pensive contemplation of my own experiences and observations.

Weekends: My weekend starts from Friday evenings and I make the most out of it. Like they say- work hard party harder! I love partying, hanging out with friends and spending time with my mum & dad over the weekend. I utilise one Saturday every alternate month, to visit the Home for the Disabled (Jeera) to spend some time with the inmates there. I also look forward to visiting the Birla Temple once a month, usually on a Sunday, after 7 pm. There is no place in Hyderabad that is more peaceful that the highest point of this temple, and no view of the Hussain Sagar and the Buddha, that is better!

Me and My Bestie: Nothing beats the stress and the monotony of a long day at work than talking to your best friend. I end my day, every night, after a 1-hour long conversation with my best friend of ten-years- Alekhya. Nothing beats some nonsensical jokes, loads of giggling, and a little bit of gossiping! I am truly blessed to have her stand by me through my thick and thin...She is my very own Power puff girl!

Instead of lunches out and cab rides, you might be wasting money on coffee and happy hours. After two weeks are up, review the list and see what jumps out at you.

Recycle and reuse : The plastic bags for your groceries make good trash bags too. If you really want to become efficient, consider things like covering your food while cooking, it will not only save your time but gas or electricity used for it. Reheat that half-full pot of coffee, if you want two cups of hot tea, one bag or spoon is probably sufficient. And most important don’t waste. Consider investing in reusable items. Pack up a third of your clothes, store them in bins or in a secondary closet, and after a few months rotate them back in to your wardrobe and swap out a new batch. This keeps your closet fresh with “new” outfits without ever going shopping. You will have more than enough to watch, without the headache of a massive cable bill each month Don’t Overstore: Avoid buying bulk quantities of fresh vegetables and fruits, buy in small quantities and store fresh. Don’t stock up unnecessary packaged food and always see the expiry date before use. Address your insurance costs: The fastest way for some people to reduce monthly expenses will be in the area of health, auto and life insurance. Companies that sell those are incredibly competitive. Growing prices have taken a toll on everyone’s life, be it petrol prices, auto fares, hangouts and food joints. So spending carefully is the key I follow. If you want to reach your desired goals of attaining a healthy and functional ‘you’ then you must most importantly focus on - not getting hurt or over working out, falling in a trap of injuries and being de motivated. Be functional at work, home and gym. For that one has to have a larger picture in mind and remember that it’s time to work smart, dont push the limit, that come with age, stress levels and work schedules. To attain a well-toned body, one does not

have to slog in gym. The body that does even 25-30 minutes of workout which is not hardcore and that which fetches results is called the body for life and it will remain thankful to you for not hurting it. Functional fitness can be described as basic moves, moderate intensity, that fits your daily routine, like sitting, climbing stairs, walking to your car and all this without panting and sweating like a pig. I do not believe in the theory - No pain No gain. Something is always better than nothing provided it suits your lifestyle, as the saying goes: We are what we eat. I may be wrong but this is my experience and after training a hundred people I now believe that each individual is made different.

Well talking about my most beloved and dedicated student which I had been training for more than 12 years is an example for holistic fitness and I would proudly like to add that he has the desire and the will to achieve whatever he wants to be. Training Rohit like student (which is hard to get like) is a bliss as he is committed and has become an example for many, he walks the talk and his attitude is like “Never say Never”, I am saying this because many students want quick fix results and want to achieve body of their desire in no time, which is a ‘Big No’ for me, as a teacher, I believe in building a proper form of workout and then push hard from there!! I make him train in different patterns so that his body is always shocked and responds faster. Touch wood, he never got an injury as he is any trainers delight to work with. We do Boot camp training, HIIT Training(High Intense Interval Training), Kettle bell for Core, cardio in a week, I also make him do outdoor running and biking for a change from the machine cardio, which doesn’t make his routine monotonous. Beauty

Look Summer Fresh!!

Harmful UV rays is the most obvious culprit in causing wrinkles & brown spots, they also make your skin & hair appear oily. Summer means to lighten your beauty routine, to ditch your foundation & blush for a simple swipe of bronzer.

Here are a few skin & hair tips to be followed in summer. •

Exfoliate your body: It is very important to exfoliate your skin. If you don’t do this, they make your skin look dull & dry. No matter how much lotion you use, you are never going to have a glowing skin if you don’t exfoliate. You can also go in for Skin Polishing for an instant glow & Ex-foliation.

Hydrate your skin with summer lotion: Don’t forget to hydrate your skin with a good summer lotion. Use a fast absorbing lotion. You can use cucumber juice or mint juice as a natural summer cooling lotion.

Don’t forget you’re feet: Pack away winter boots, its sandal season now. Either get a professional pedicure done or go for a home pedicure. Scrub off the dead – dry cells to reveal your sandal ready feet. Scrub your feet few times a week & see the difference.

Find a new summer polish: Try to use light colour or nude shades in summer.

Use a Sunscreen: Use a sunscreen lotion regularly 2 – 3 times a day to protect your skin from tan. Make sure you apply sun screen at least half an hour before you step out of your house.

Lip Care: Never forget to dab a good lip

46 APRIL, 2013

gloss on your lips ass it helps them to look soft & pink. •

Natural Skin Cooler: Feeling hot? Rub a peeled cucumber or an ice cube to your skin for a soft skin with all the internal heat soaked up.

De-Tan : De–Tan bleach is an excellent option to remove the tan from your skin. You can either go for a professional De Tan pack or bleach or use homemade De-Tan pack, Blend some curd into gram flour (besan) till it forms a smooth paste. Add a spoon of sugar to it & use it as a pack. Leave it for 15 mins & rinse.

Make Up Tips: Try to avoid foundation as much as possible in summers as it can be harsh on your skin. And if you have to don’t forget to Use a Sun Screen first.

Deep Conditioning: Wash your hair at least 3 to 4 times a week to avoid dandruff, hair fall & many other skin problems. Also use a deep conditioner once a week & avoid too much of blow drying.

Wash your face several times a day with running tap water. Drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water every day. Try to add sufficient quantity of fruits, butter milk, curd & other natural coolers to your diet.

Summer Weddings Sure, summer can be hot. But don’t let that get you down. Satpreet Kaur says, ’If you know there’s a decent chance it will be especially hot on your wedding day, make plans to avert any weatherrelated disasters. Summer weddings have of late become quite common and many people now deliberately plan a summer wedding. It can be fun and enjoyable if planned properly and with some precautions. Summers in several Indian cities can get quite hot and humid with day temperatures rising beyond 45 deg C at its peak.’ However, here are few things that you should keep in mind for a summer wedding Outdoor Venue - If you have chosen an outdoor venue like a garden or a farmhouse, make sure there are several pedestal fans and greenery around so that the temperature remains cool.

Wedding

Indoor Venue - If you have decided to book a wedding hall then make sure it is well ventilated and has proper air conditioning since having hundreds of guest in a single hall, how so very big, can make it quite stuffy and suffocating. Size of the venue - Choose a big enough venue so that there is ample moving space and make sure that food is served somewhere away from the stage where the bride and the groom will be seated. Decoration - Use seasonal flowers only because they are easily available and look pretty also. Do not select flowers which dry up easily in summer. Another option is using artificial flowers theme to create a cool ambience

Do provide heat relief - No matter how much you love the sun, your guests will probably want a few ways to escape the heat. Instead of having guests sweat it out through the ceremony, just before it starts have an usher pass out small ice-cold hand towels across the guests. Scatter decorative baskets filled with bottles of water close proximity to the guests. And don’t forget your vendors: Set up an area where they can grab cold beverages as well. Clothes - Avoid wearing heavy clothing for a summer wedding, especially when it comes to bride’s dress. A heavy ‘lehenga’ only adds to the discomfort which a hot and humid weather causes. Try finding a wedding dress which is made from fabrics like Chiffon or Georgette or something that’s made from cotton. Same goes for the groom, avoid wearing heavy dresses and go for something light and not made out of synthetic fabrics. Jewellery - Just like clothing, even jewellery can be quite a pain in the neck (pun intended) during a summer wedding. Wear something that will not cause rashes, if you start sweating due to the temperature. Exertion - Avoid exertion during a summer wedding, this goes specially for the bride and the groom who will have to stay awake till late in the night during their wedding day to complete all the rituals and the ‘pheras’. Heavy Food - Summers are a time when people usually lose their appetite for heavy and oily foods. However, everyone enjoys lots of snacks and ‘chaats’, especially something like ‘golgappas’ or ‘paani-puris’ and ‘dahi-bhalla’ (curd based ‘chaats’). Also, have ample cold juices, soft drinks etc. to help your guests beat the heat. Don’t overlook sun and bug protection - Sunburn can give the term “blushing bride” a whole new meaning. Prior to getting dressed, the bride, groom, and attendants should apply sunscreen to skin that will be exposed. Consider wearing a moisturizer and foundation or powder that contains SPF (just give it a test-drive for allergies weeks beforehand). In the guest bathroom, include a basket with sun block wipes as well as bug spray (which should also be available at the ceremony site). 52 APRIL, 2013

Fast forward ten years and they are happily married now. Neha and Vishal, the proud owners of exclusive store –Neha’s, have been working together for almost past 10 years now since its launch in 2003. Vishal says “I was involved in my dad’s business initially, and I always wanted Neha to be involved in something, she has her qualities and so we started a boutique for her in Banjara Hills, and within a short span of time it saw immense success and amazing feedback from customers. So I decided to join her and make it a fully fledged business. With our hard work together we have reached a successful place, but there is still a long way to go.” The couple share an excellent chemistry, together they 58 APRIL, 2013

make a picture perfect couple. They make up for each other in every possible way. Vishal is more practical and Neha is patient and understanding. One completing the other or I would rather say that the couple compliments each other. Two very different individuals, who believe in oneness, have respect for each others decisions joined by the thread of love, appreciation and trust for each other. They have a cute 5 year old son named Sidhanth, their life revolves around him. In spite of their busy work schedule they make sure they spend good time with their son too. Fridays and Saturdays are totally dedicated to him, ‘he sleeps with us, spends the day with us, we go out for movies, or dinners whatever he wishes to do’. Their story is all lovey - dovey with no twists and turns, but they sure have their own hiccups on their way. Neha says “When Sidhanth was born it was difficult for me to manage both home and work, but I am blessed to have a mother-in-law who wanted me to pursue my dreams without any stress. She stepped in and took care of our son like her own son, even today she is the one who takes care of him, and spend immense time with him, than any of us. I really love and respect my motherin-law, she is an inspiration write to me, and it’s

When asked about what they both love doing together, pat comes the reply “holiday”. BMW i8 Concept Sports Car - Born Electric

Sometimes it is time to leave the city. Escape the restrictions of everyday life. The BMW i8 is an icon of progress. It combines the energizing performance of a sports car with benchmark efficiency. The emotional design of the BMW i8 Concept ensures its qualities are clear for all to see. Its dynamic proportions give the BMW i8 Concept the appearance of surging forward before it even turns a wheel and lend visual form to its extraordinary performance. The BMW i8 Concept is not only fast and extremely fuel efficient, it also leads the way in innovative vehicle light technology. For the first time BMW introduces as part of the BMW i8 Concept the newly developed Laser Light. Headlights that is more efficient than LED lights, highly flexible, ten times smaller, pleasant to the eye and absolutely safe. The i8 Concept combines the advantages of two different drive systems. As a plug-in hybrid it reaps the benefits of an electric motor and an internal combustion engine for maximum efficiency with maximum dynamics. At the front axle is the electric motor adopted from the BMW i3 Concept and modified for use in the BMW i8 Concept's hybrid power train, while a 164 kW/220 hp turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine developing up to 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque drives the rear axle. Together, the two drive units take the vehicle to a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Like the electric motor, the 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine was developed entirely in-house by the BMW Group and represents the latest state of the art in conventional engine design. Acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under five seconds combined with fuel consumption in the European cycle of 2.7 liters per 100 kilometers (approx. 104 mpg imp) are figures currently beyond the capability of any vehicle powered by a combustion engine of comparable performance. Depending on charging habits and the nature of the route, it is even possible to improve on these figures.

60 APRIL, 2013

The hybrid concept means that the BMW i8 Concept can also run purely on electric power. The energy supplied by the application-designed battery system installed between the front and rear axle modules to the electric motor at the front axle gives the BMW i8 Concept an allelectric driving range of approximately 35 kilometers (20 miles). The battery can be fully recharged in two hours at a standard power socket. It has got Dynamic Side view with Striking front end and a sporty rear end. It’s definitely a future sports car.

Miley and Liam still engaged. Are young celeb marriages doomed from the start?

Reports have been swirling for weeks that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have been going through a rough patch - and now, the New York Post is reporting that the two have called off their engagement. Cyrus took to Twitter last week to assure her fans that she and Hemsworth are still going strong and they have not called off their wedding, but we’re left to wonder: Is there any bit of truth to the rumors? After all, not many Hollywood starlets as young as 19-year-old Cyrus find themselves in long-term wedded bliss.

Lady Gaga recovers from hip surgery in gold wheelchair Leave it to Lady Gaga to refuse to let an injury cramp her style! After undergoing hip surgery last month, the singer turned to designer Ken Borochov of luxury label Mordekai to create a custom wheelchair. And Borochov certainly didn’t disappoint, creating a head-turning 24-karat gold plated chair that will have Gaga riding out her recovery in style! So what exactly went into creating this pop queen’s new ride? For an edgy yet durable look, Burachov styled the tufted leather seats to look like a motorcycle jacket and added some seriously stylish spoke rims that are sure to mesmerize onlookers, it features a removable canopy should mother monster require a little shade, and even reclines should she start to feel fatigued. She is recovering after all!

Has Taylor Swift’s Bubble Burst? While Swift, 23, could do no wrong a year ago – and the accolades poured in both from industry folks at award shows and the public by way of soaring purchases of whatever it was she was peddling (from her music to perfume) – that perception seems to have shifted after a series of recent public missteps and she’s received a slew of bad press. The most recent blowback comes from her fan mail dumping scandal. Though a crisis-PR consultant agreed that it’s not time for her management team to hit the panic button just yet, saying, “I don’t think the backlash right now is that strong because you don’t see it in sales – her album has been strong and her concerts are selling well – and there’s still a lot of interest in her. She really has a well-run business side. She’s a marketing machine. So I don’t think she needs the distraction from this other stuff. She needs to work on that – to not let her private life get in the way. That’s what I would try to do if I was trying to work with her.” Though it is a tad difficult when her songs and her private life are so intertwined. 64 APRIL, 2013

movies Movie Reviews

The Attacks of 26/11 Director: Ram Gopal Varma, Cast: Nana Patekar, Atul Kulkarni and Sanjeev Jaiswal The Attacks Of 26/11 is classic RGV material. It’s raw to the extent that its untamed violence makes it a tad repulsive. But it also reminds you of the ugly truth. The build up shows how the terrorists made their way to Mumbai via the sea route. The band of terrorists which includes Ajmal Kasab (Sanjeev Jaiswal), are depicted as evil-looking young men. No sooner, the terror attacks are launched on Café Leopold, The Taj Hotel, CST Station and Cama Hospital. The film makes no effort in sensitizing its subject or the proceedings. RGV splatters blood with gusto and has the menacing terrorist’s rain bullets on innocents, children, toddlers and dogs. Yes these visuals are true, but they’re also disturbing. Whether RGV should’ve been more sensitive in portraying reality is a matter of opinion. But watching the terrorists kill innocent people with clinical indifference evokes deep emotions in the viewer. Mere Dad Ki Maruti Director: Ashima Chibber, Cast: Saqib Saleem, Ram Kapoor, Rhea Chakraborty, Prabal Punjabi and Ravi Kissen Ashima Chibber’s ‘Mere Dad Ki Maruti’ is a cute little film that makes you laugh and gives you all the important lessons in life without trying too hard. Sameer (Saqib Saleem) is an irritating, nitwit college boy who screws up everything in life. That keeps his dad Tejpal (Ram Kapoor) on a perpetual boil. Sameer’s sister is about to get married and Tejpal has bought her a brand new Maruti Ertiga as a wedding gift. Sameer has other ideas as he sneaks out with the brand new car to impress the town’s hottest chick Jasleen (Rhea Chakraborty). Sameer manages to lose the car on the night out and you have a ready premise that accommodates some great comedy of errors. The situational humour in MDKM is as good as any you’ve seen in Hindi films. Writers have done a fabulous job. The narrative keeps surprising you with one hilarious scene after another. MDKM is a short film, but it has so much packed into a small time frame that you get more than your money’s worth. Oz The Great And Powerful Director: Sam Raimi, Cast: James Franco, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz James Franco plays the magician Oz, who defines himself in the film as the greatest con artist alive. Like Dorothy from 1939, he’s accidentally caught in a storm and ends up reaching the magical world of Oz. This is when the film kicks into modern colored and vivid 3D mode. From there on he meets the witches Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glenda (Michelle Williams). And his task is to save the world of Oz from the wicked witch. This prequel to The Wizard Of Oz, is really an interpretation to a backstory. Raimi’s canvas is infinite and open and while he adheres to most laws of the Oz world he does make his own additions. In spite of its narrative inconsistencies the new Oz film worth a watch. It’s not every day that 3D in movies lives up to its expectation. The experience can reaffirm your faith in magic at the movies.

Gone Girl : A Novel

By Gillian Flynn Marriage can be a real killer. On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter— but is he really a killer? As the cops close in,

Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead By Sheryl Sandberg Thirty years after women became 50 percent of the college graduates in the United States, men still hold the vast majority of leadership positions in government and industry. This means that women’s voices are still not heard equally in the decisions that most affect our lives. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg examines why women’s progress in achieving leadership roles has stalled, explains the root causes, and offers compelling, common sense solutions that can empower women to achieve their full potential. Sandberg is the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook and is ranked on Fortune’s list of the 50 Most Powerful Women in Business and as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. In 2010, she gave an electrifying TEDTalk in which she described how women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers. Her talk, which became a phenomenon and has been viewed more than two million times, encouraged women to “sit at the table,” seek challenges, take risks, and pursue their goals with gusto.

every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet? Know Your Fortune

fortune

- Tarot reading by Nupur Heda

Aries

(Mar. 21 - April 19)

A great love is about to come your way, whether you’re already attached and quite happy, or single and looking for a whole new relationship. Either way, someone will inspire you to open up your whole heart to them, and once you’ve done that, you’ll find a new side of yourself - the side of you that’s willing to say “I do.” That may mean marriage or simply a profession of love. You may not be aware of it, but you’re about to make a change this month - a big one - in the department of work and career. You may already be bored and restless - unhappy with the type of work you’re doing, and positively craving something new. The good news is that it’s about to happen, most likely through the last person you’d ever expect to make you an offer. Don’t worry about losing your friends or those closest to you. After you’ve come up with your own answers to pressing questions, you’ll be back, renewed and revitalized.

Taurus

Cancer

If you’re happily attached, the month will bring you two into a wonderful period of “togetherness” that will be brought on by one simple event - an event that will prove that you’re truly meant to be together. If you’re single, you’re probably in the mood to stay that way, especially if you’ve just regained your freedom. Don’t let anyone make you feel as if you owe them anything. You don’t! Your attitude has absolutely everything to do with the end result of the problem or dilemma. For that reason, it’s time for you to take control of what’s going on - so grab the steering wheel and do not let go. It’s time to reach a clear and objective understanding with the world around us - a “deal” of sorts. Justice demands that we do what we can so that we get exactly what we deserve, and in the process, we learn to understand that everything we do is affected by what everyone else does. That doesn’t mean we should sit still and wait.

The World brings unity and strength. It’s to let you know that you’re at the very end of long journey. When it pertains to love, it likely means that you’re about to make a major move - to cohabitate, marry, or have a child with someone you adore. If you’re not yet romantically entangled, it may also mean that you’re about to either ask or answer such a question. Prepare yourself - happily! You’ll want to rush now in all matters, and that may be the best course of action. That’s only going to work if you have everything in place. Act with confidence and let everyone around you know that you have no fear of moving forward at your own speed. Listen to the advice that dear ones offer, but also pay attention to yourself - to your dreams, your feelings of déjà vu, and to the voice of your intuition. You have spirit guides and angels guiding you. Pay heed.

( April 20 - May 20)

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

Something is definitely coming to an end. The good news is that while most folks see this and fear that their life, or someone else’s, is what’s coming to an end, that’s not at all what this card signifies. Contrary to popular opinion, what Death truly indicates is simply change. Granted, it will be a tremendous change - but change, after all, is what life is all about. Don’t be scared. Be invigorated. There’s something going on at work that isn’t quite right, and you haven’t been sure about what to do. Now that the time has appeared, however, the month’s path has become very clear. You know exactly what’s required of you, both by your conscience and by the trust that co-workers and superiors have placed in you. Don’t destroy that trust, no matter how tough it is to do the right thing. No matter what you hope or fear, if you aim at the end result with all your energy, you’ll do just fine. 82 APRIL, 2013

(June 21 - July 22)

Leo

(July 23 - August 22) Emotions are a funny thing. They can aid us, acting like “antennae” when we’re uncertain about the outcome of a situation (in the intellectual sense), and end up guiding us toward the most positive outcome. On the other hand, they can sway us, that is, if we let our hearts rule our minds when we really know they shouldn’t. The appearance of some cards, however, means that it’s your heart you should heed. Trust it above all else. The card in this position indicates that you’ve been feeling stuck, delayed, and overdue for the praise you deserve due to the quality of the job you’ve been doing. The good news is that you’ll only have to deal with this for a month. Afterward, your superiors will see just how hard you’ve been working at your task. Basically, this card is asking you to have just a little more patience. A project that’s been nothing more than a dream lately could well be about to come to fruition. Just try not to go overboard and become rigid or nit-picky.

(August 23 - September 22) The month will turn you into a veritable romantic magnet now, so if you’re attached, be very careful about who you flirt with, even playfully, because your partner won’t take kindly to how receptive just about everyone will be to you. If you’re single, however, have a self-choice time. If you’ve got the feeling that someone is working behind the scenes to undermine your authority or to make you look like you’re less valuable than you are - well, you’re not crazy. In fact, you’re probably about to uncover something you need to see, especially if you’re about to be promoted, which is likely. Don’t let this person or persons get to you. Stand your ground and let them know you’re not going anywhere! Magic is in the air. You’re about to be touched by the exquisite hand of fate - the kind of fate that’s on your side. Don’t waste this wonderful gift. If you need something, ask the Universe for it - and do be specific.

Libra

(September 23 - October 22) When it comes to relationships, the card indicates the arrival of a person who will absolutely fascinate you in every possible way. They may seem to be everything you’ve ever wanted in a partner, and that could actually be true. But you really need to take your time getting to know them before you make any serious decisions. Be led by your mind, as well as your heart. The appearance of some cards says that you’ve received a very important indication that you’ve done the right thing, been in the right place at the right time, and chosen the right occupation. If you’re not satisfied, don’t despair. Something you never expected will come along, when you least expect it. You’ll righteously stand up for anyone who needs you, keep your promises, and look for the deeper meaning in all situations.

Scorpio

(October 23 - November 21) Life and love go together as naturally as imagination and creation. All of these qualities are inspired by the cards, who’ll bestow you with those traits and many more over the coming month. You’re already feeling the urge to create something with a loved one. Appreciate the process as well as the lovely end result. The cards in this position absolutely demand that you dedicate yourself completely to the task at hand. Now, that may mean that you need to cancel all your social plans and get down to business, or it may mean that you need to delegate with an eye toward the success of the entire project. Regardless, keep your eye on the prize! The Karma doesn’t take kindly to anyone who slacks off, becomes lazy or decides not to take responsibility for their own actions.

Sagittarius

(November 22 - December 21)

Someone who has been very dear to you for a very long time has recently touched your heart in an even more tender way - and this month, through the doings, you two may even end up discussing a way to take your relationship to a higher level. In short, you may suddenly decide that it’s time to ‘take a knee’ - to either propose or to accept a proposal. The cards represent skill, wisdom, and the ability to use those qualities to get what you want. This month, then, go after whatever it is that you know you deserve. You have a knack for something, and you

TULIP

fortune

love to do it. If you’re already working in that field, you can expect all good things to come your way now - recognition, for starters. If you’re still searching, don’t be shy about it. If you want to feel good about yourself this month, take care of what needs to be done, and don’t procrastinate.

Capricorn

(December 22 - January 19)

The cards certainly can indicate a month full of romance, or that you’ll meet the love of your life, or that a decision having to do with a relationship will come to a very happy end. However, to have that deep love, you must be prepared to take a risk - to open up your heart and make a decision. Stop worrying about the past. The future looks not just bright, but happy in a calm and peaceful way. Whatever the “higher-ups” toss your way, you’ll be able to handle it with grace, poise, and calm dignity. This attitude may well mean that you’re about to finally receive the raise, promotion, or bonus you’ve been waiting for especially if you don’t rush it. And why would you want to, with things going so well? Remember having nightmares when you were little, and only being reassured by climbing into your parents’ bed? Well, no matter what age you are, it indicates that you’re feeling the same thing - but in “grown-up terms.” Your mission now is to find someone or something that makes you feel safe. The thing is, it will only come from within. Dig deep!

Aquarius

(January 20 - February 18) You’re going to be quite popular this month. The cards indicate an easy-going, social, and friendly time full of hugs, understanding, and harmony with others. Obviously, if you’re attached, you two will become much closer. If you’re single, you may be about to meet someone new - not someone who’ll storm into your life, but a person who’ll make their way into your inner circle gently and stay there. You’ll want to rush now in all matters, and that may be the best course of action. That’s only going to work if you have everything in place. If everything you want to do has already been set into motion, then by all means, go for it! Act with confidence and let everyone around you know that you have no fear of moving forward at your own speed. Over the coming month, you’ll come to realize that there are certain requirements in life that you can’t do without - hence, the reason they’ve been named “necessities.” You’ll also see that patience is necessary to get along. Talk about personal growth!

Pisces

(February 19 - March 20) It’s all too easy to talk someone into doing exactly what you want them to do. It’s a given that you’ll get exactly what you want from them - you’re quite powerful now. The question, however, is this: Do you want what you want so much that you’re willing to lose your principles to have it? Think that over before you begin manipulating someone whose respect you really cherish. In this moment in time, you can righteously spend many a happy moment enjoying the fruits of your success - whether or not they’ve actually arrived. You know that what you’ve done is about to bring you rewards, so why wait? Plan the parties, send out the invitations, and be sure to stay in contact with the influential people who’ve already agreed to help you announce your name.
