Over the Cappucino with Likhita Yalamanchili

AUGUST

There's a line in this month's cover story that stayed with me long after I turned the page: jewellery, it says, is more than adornment

it's a story you wear. It struck me that the very same could be said of almost everything we've gathered in this August issue Every page, in its own way, is about how we choose to show up in the world, and how we stay rooted while we do it

Our cover feature, Jewellery as Expression, moves through the season's most coveted collections from the pearl-strung poetry of Shayagrams to the fearless colour of Aditi Bhatt and the Mediterranean romance of Zariin Each piece is an invitation to wear your individuality out loud, to let a single detail say something true about who you are

That spirit of self-expression threads quietly through the rest of the issue too We sit down Over a Cappuccino with Likhita Yalamanchili the Hyderabad girl who became a doctor and made her acting debut in the same breathless year and find someone entirely unafraid to be many things at once On the wellness front, Pilates instructor Rishi Sree reminds us that real strength is built with intention, while dietitian K Soumya Kumar takes us deep into the quiet conversation between our gut and our mind

Closer to home, we wander the opulent halls of the Nizams' Museum, reimagine the modern living room with a touch of Indian soul, and climb to the city's chicest new rooftops for a night beneath the Hyderabad skyline And when it all begins to feel like a little too much, our closing story offers the gentlest remedy of all wrapping your arms around a tree and letting the earth hold you for a while

Adorn yourself. Ground yourself. Wear your story.

Here's to a beautiful August

LIKHITA YALAMANCHILI

Likhita Yalamanchili is the Hyderabad girl who won the Femina Miss India Andhra Pradesh crown in 2022, graduated MBBS the very same week, and made her acting debut in Gunasekhar's Euphoria. Grounded in her Telugu roots yet forever chasing the next leap, she moves between the operating theatre, the runway, and the film set with the same fearless curiosity.

You wear so many hats — doctor, actor, and a Miss India crown. What does a typical day in your life actually look like? Honestly, right now my life is refreshingly singleminded as my NEET PG exam is just a month away, so everything is built around that. My day starts at 8 AM, and I study in three-hour blocks with an hour break in between. And it repeats through the week. Saturday evening and Sunday, I switch gears I meet friends, step out, catch up on my Instagram commitments, basically let myself breathe It’s intense, I won’t lie, but I actually love this phase There’s something clarifying about having one big goal to chase after chasing to be in a movie for the past 1 and half year, this is a nice change.

You're an MBBS graduate who fell in love with fashion and the camera early on. How did you find the courage to step in front of the lens while you were still studying medicine? Honestly, the camera has always pulled me in. I think it started way back in fourth standard, when I won Miss YMCA at a summer camp in West Marredpally That was probably the first spark But for years after that, I didn’t have the courage to actually pursue it I kept it on the back burner. It slowly crept back in through Musical.ly and TikTok, just for fun. Then during COVID, while I was still in my MBBS, I suddenly had time on my hands and that’s when Instagram happened I remember thinking, if I don’t explore this now, I probably never will It felt like the right age, the right moment and COVID, strangely, gave me the space to finally act on it

You won the Femina Miss India AP crown in 2022 — the same year you graduated. What was that whirlwind like, and what did the pageant teach you about yourself? 2022 was one of the biggest years of my life. I took a real leap toward my dreams and won Femina Miss India Andhra Pradesh 2022 And I’d never really stayed away from home before that! It was as a whole new experience in itself Then, within a week of coming back, I graduated MBBS and officially became a doctor. Looking back, it still feels magical like a movie montage. I was on cloud nine, living two completely different dreams almost back to back What it really taught me is that anything we set our mind to, we can achieve

Acting was a leap you chose to take — you've said you can never be the same age again, so you decided to explore it. Where does that fearless, jump-first spirit come from? I think it comes from the same place that pushed me toward Miss India that same curiosity What if I just explore this and see how far it takes me? For me, it’s also about constantly testing myself putting myself in uncomfortable, unfamiliar situations, because that’s where real growth happens. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. So with acting, I told myself I’d just try it for fun and see where it goes for 1-2 years

And within 8 to 10 months of trying, I landed a film which, I’ll admit, i consider a little lucky as well, because things usually move painfully slowly in this industry. I’m just really grateful

Your debut film Euphoria, directed by Gunasekhar, was a big milestone. How was your very first experience on a film set, and what surprised you the most?

Working with a director as meticulous and fast-paced as Gunasekhar sir on my very first set was honestly a masterclass in itself And working alongside such an experienced cast, taught me more than acting. What surprised me most was the sheer scale of it all . the work, the money, the time that goes into making a film, literally from pre-production to making to the release. I have so much more respect for the industry and the art of storytelling

Medicine demands discipline and precision; fashion and film demand spontaneity and glamour. How do you balance those two very different worlds inside one person?

I think every person is multifaceted. Just that, not everyone always get the chance to explore every sides. I’m glad I chose to tap into them Both personalities have always lived in me. That balance still plays out weekly. And weekends are when I switch I meet friends, step out, catch up on my Instagram world It reminds me I’m still all the other things too, not just a girl buried in a textbook it keeps me going

You're a proud Hyderabad girl with a strong love for your Telugu roots. What does this city mean to you, and how does it show up in who you are? It shows up in the little things the way I stay close to family, the way I value warmth and togetherness over anything glamorous, the way I never let the work pull me too far from home. Even my discipline, I think, comes from that upbringing . watching my parents work really hard the value they placed on consistency and discipline And showing up no matter what Hyderabad taught me to stay grounded, no matter how big the stage gets And yes my Telugu roots come from growing up / spending time with my grandparents at a young age, celebrating festivals and holidays in Vijayawada with my extended family

What inspires and motivates you to keep pushing into new spaces?

Curiosity And to test my potential

What's currently on your bucket list something you're dying to do or achieve?

Currently my NEET PG exam I’m aiming for a good rank that’s it.

Rapid Fire

If you were handed a genie and could make just 2 wishes, what would you wish for?

A beautiful bigger home for my parents and grandparents to stay together with 2 house helps for mom. That’s enough.

Left alone in a supermarket and allowed to grab only 3 things — what makes the cut?

Some chicken, pasta and dark chocolate.

An alternate occupation — if you weren't a doctor-turned-actor, what would you have become?

PILATES POISE

HYDERABAD’S CORE OF MINDFUL ELEGANCE

In the realm of wellness, Pilates emerges as a symphony of precision and poise, a method pioneered by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century that harmonizes breath, core fortitude, and fluid articulation to sculpt the physique from within. Far from mere calisthenics, it unfurls as an alchemical practice, low impact yet profoundly transformative, igniting a global fervor for its capacity to elongate sinews, fortify the lumbar sanctum, and bestow an ethereal suppleness. In Hyderabad’s pulsating tapestry of mindful living, Pilates transcends the gym’s confines, evolving into a luminous beacon for those seeking equilibrium amid urban whirlwinds; its devotees extol its virtues in ameliorating postural elegance, mitigating chronic ennui, and nurturing a meditative communion with one’s corporeal vessel.

Let us now attune to the sagacity of Rishi Sree, a certified Pilates savant ensconced in Hyderabad’s vibrant wellness echelons, whose atelier beckons the city’s luminaries toward corporeal enlightenment. With credentials honed through rigorous pedagogy and an intuitive grasp of somatic alchemy, Rishi demystifies Pilates as more than exertion, it’s a reverie of resilience.

Could you give a brief intro about yourself and What inspired you to launch Ananta Studio in Hyderabad, and how has the local fitness landscape evolved to embrace Pilates.

I’m a certified Pilates instructor and Director of Pilates at Ananta. For me, Pilates isn't just a workout it’s about discovering what your body is truly capable of. In Hyderabad, we've seen a massive shift lately. People are moving away from just 'crushing it' in the gym and are now looking for sustainable, intentional movement. The city has really embraced Pilates as the go-to for building real strength and better posture for the long haul.

As a certified Pilates trainer, what’s one common myth about Pilates that you debunk for your clients right away?

I always hear that Pilates is "just fancy stretching" or "only for women." I debunk that on day one! It’s actually a killer strength workout that hits muscles you never knew you had. It’s challenging for everyone, even the toughest gym-goers.The biggest one is that Pilates is "easy" or "just stretching." I love seeing the look on a client's face when they realize how hard their core is working! . It’s definitely not a nap on a mat.

Brief us through a signature session at Ananta—how do you customize it for beginners versus elite athletes?

At Ananta, no two sessions look the same. For beginners, we focus on breath, alignment, and slow, controlled movements. The focus is on the foundations learning to breathe and find their center. With elite athletes, we increase complexity, resistance, and precision. The foundation remains the same, but intensity and intent change. It's about meeting the body where it is.

Pilates is all about core strength; which three exercises do you swear by for busy professionals juggling work and wellness?

For busy protessionals, I swear by the Hundred for circulation, Plank variations for total core engagement, and Spine Stretch for mobility. These three together improve posture, reduce stiffness from long sitting hours, and activate the core efficiently.

What role does breathwork play in your sessions, and how has it helped clients manage stress in our high-pressure city life?

Breath is the center of the movement. It’s about calming the nervous system. In a fast paced city like ours, that focused breathing helps clients "switch off" the work stress and actually connect with their bodies. They walk out feeling taller and much calmer. Many clients tell me Pilates is the only hour in their day where their mind truly slows down.

Looking ahead, trends you’re excited to bring to Hyderabad’s fitness elite?

Hyderabad's fitness elite is moving beyond aesthetics toward longevity and injury prevention.Smart training is becoming aspirational, and I want to be at the forefront of that shift. I’m really excited about Athletic Pilates mixing traditional moves with more dynamic, sports specific training. I want to show people that Pilates is the secret weapon for better golf, better running, and a more resilient body overall.

What is the ideal wear for Pilates?

Go for form-fitting gear—think leggings and a snug tank so I can check your alignment and form easily. But the real must-have? Grip socks! They keep you safe on the Reformer and make sure you’re not slipping during those tricky moves.

A THREE VARIATION PILATES ROUTINE, FOR CORE STRENGTH IS HERE: TO YOUR HEAD START PILATES CLASS

Pilates Reformer exercises offer precise, controlled movements that enhance strength, flexibility, and core stability using the Reformer’s springs and carriage

1. Reformer Warrior 2 Lunges

Stand facing the long edge of the Reformer with your right foot on the platform and left foot on the carriage, toes toward the shoulder blocks. Lunge into the left leg while keeping the knee aligned with your toes, extending arms out to the sides in a Warrior 2 yoga pose for upper body engagement. Straighten the left leg while sweeping arms overhead, flowing dynamically between lunge and extension to build lower body power, balance, and hip mobility; switch sides after 6-8 reps.

2.Reformer Arm Exchange

Sit tall on the carriage facing the footbar with feet flexed on it, holding straps in both hands at shoulder height with elbows bent. Extend one arm forward while pulling the opposite strap back in a scissor-like exchange, keeping shoulders stable and core engaged to alternate smoothly. This isolates the upper back, shoulders, and arms for improved posture and scapular control, performing 8-10 exchanges per side with controlled breath.

3.Pilates Reformer Pike

Lie supine on the carriage with hands strapped into long loops overhead and feet on the footbar in parallel. Press the bar to roll the hips up into an inverted pike, lifting the carriage while keeping legs straight and core scooped to form a V-shape. Lower with control to strengthen the entire posterior chain, shoulders, and deep abs, aiming for 5-8 reps to boost inversion strength and spinal articulation.

What is the ideal wear for Pilates?

In the luminous arc of mindful living, Pilates emerges not merely as exercise but as a Hyderabad symphony of somatic grace, elongating the frame, fortifying the core, and harmonizing breath with intention amid the city’s kinetic pulse.

YOURMANE Monsoon-Proof Monsoon-Proof

THEULTIMATEGUIDETO HEALTHYHAIRDURING THERAINYSEASON

TheSeasonofRain,Romance…andHairTroubles

The arrival of the monsoon is often met with excitement. The scorching summer gives way to cool breezes, lush greenery, and the comforting sound of rain tapping against windows. It's the season of warm beverages, long drives, cozy evenings, and nature at its most vibrant. Yet, while the rains breathe new life into the environment, they often leave our hair struggling to keep up.

One day your hair is silky smooth, and the next it's frizzy, limp, oily, or shedding more than usual. Sound familiar? You're not imagining it. The rainy season brings a unique set of challenges that affect hair health, regardless of hair type. Increased humidity, fluctuating temperatures, pollution, rainwater, and excessive moisture create the perfect conditions for scalp concerns and damaged strands.

Many people mistakenly believe that because the weather is cooler, their hair requires less attention. In reality, the monsoon is one of the most demanding seasons for hair care. Fortunately, with the right routine and a little consistency, you can keep your hair healthy, manageable, and beautiful throughout the season.

Let's explore why your hair behaves differently during the monsoon and discover practical ways to protect it.

WHYDOESTHEMONSOONAFFECT YOURHAIR?

Hair responds directly to changes in the environment. During the rainy season, humidity levels often exceed 80 percent, causing the outer layer of the hair shaft the cuticle to absorb excess moisture from the air This swelling leads to frizz, loss of shine, tangles, and reduced manageability

Meanwhile, the scalp experiences its own set of issues. Sweat, oil production, pollution, and rainwater accumulate on the scalp, creating an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi. This can trigger dandruff, itchiness, clogged follicles, and even increased hair fall.

Frequent changes between air-conditioned spaces and humid outdoor weather can further weaken hair, leaving it dry at the ends and greasy at the roots These environmental shifts explain why your regular hair care routine may suddenly stop delivering the same results during the monsoon

One of the most common complaints during the monsoon is excessive hair shedding While losing 50 to 100 strands a day is considered normal, many people notice a temporary increase during this season

Humidity weakens the hair roots, while damp conditions make hair strands more elastic and prone to breakage Poor scalp hygiene can further aggravate the problem by clogging hair follicles

02 02 OilyRootsandStickyHair

FrizzThatRefusesto Behave

Have you ever stepped out after styling your hair, only to watch it become puffy within minutes? Humidity causes hair to absorb moisture unevenly, lifting the cuticle and creating the dreaded frizz. People with curly, wavy, or chemically treated hair often experience this more intensely.

The scalp naturally produces sebum, an oil that protects the hair During humid weather, sweat mixes with this oil much faster, making hair appear greasy even shortly after washing Ironically, overwashing can worsen the issue by encouraging the scalp to produce even more oil 03

A warm, damp scalp provides the perfect environment for fungal growth This often leads to dandruff, itchiness, redness, and irritation

Ignoring persistent scalp discomfort can eventually weaken hair follicles and contribute to hair fall

Although the air feels moist, the ends of the hair often become dry because natural oils struggle to travel down the hair shaft especially in long hair. Without proper conditioning, split ends become more noticeable during the rainy season 05 05

BUILDING THE PERFECT MONSOON HAIRCARE ROUTINE

StartwithaHealthyScalp

Healthy hair always begins with a healthy scalp

Choose a gentle shampoo suited to your scalp type and wash your hair two to three times a week or more often if you sweat excessively

The goal isn't frequent washing but keeping the scalp free from dirt, pollution, and product buildup

If dandruff is a recurring issue, consider alternating with a mild anti-dandruff shampoo.

ConditionWithoutWeighingHairDown

Many people skip conditioner during the rainy season because they worry it will make their hair oily. In reality, conditioner is essential for protecting the hair shaft

Apply conditioner only from the mid-lengths to the ends, avoiding the scalp. This helps maintain softness while preventing excess oiliness

For finer hair, choose lightweight conditioners instead of rich, buttery formulas. 03 03 DryHairtheRightWay

Never leave your hair wet for long periods

Avoid rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel, as this roughens the cuticle and causes breakage Instead, gently squeeze out excess water using a microfiber towel or a soft cotton T-shirt

If you use a hair dryer, select a cool or low-heat setting

OilSmart,NotHeavy

Hair oiling remains beneficial during the monsoon but moderation is key Massage warm coconut, almond, or argan oil into the scalp about an hour before washing your hair Extended overnight oiling may attract more dust and humidity, leaving the scalp greasy

A short pre-shampoo oil treatment nourishes the scalp without clogging pores 04 05 AvoidOver-Styling

Frequent straightening, curling, and heat styling weaken already fragile hair Whenever possible, embrace your natural texture and use protective hairstyles like loose braids, buns, or ponytails that reduce friction and tangling

Nutrition:HealthyHairStartsonYourPlate

Hair is made primarily of protein, which means your diet directly influences its strength and growth

A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients helps nourish hair from within

Include These Hair-Friendly Foods

· Eggs for protein and biotin

· Spinach and leafy greens for iron

· Lentils and legumes for plant protein

· Almonds and walnuts for healthy fats

· Salmon and other fatty fish for Omega-3 fatty acids

· Citrus fruits for Vitamin C

· Pumpkin and sunflower seeds for zinc

· Greek yogurt for protein and probiotics

Hydration is equally important. Even though you may not feel as thirsty during cooler weather, your body—and your hair—still needs enough water to stay healthy.

SIMPLE DIY HAIR TREATMENTS

Natural remedies can complement your regular routine when used occasionally

AloeVera ScalpMask

Fresh aloe vera gel cools the scalp, reduces irritation, and provides lightweight hydration without making hair greasy

Fenugreek HairPack

Soaked fenugreek seeds blended into a smooth paste can help reduce dandruff while strengthening the roots.

Yogurtand HoneyMask

A mixture of yogurt and honey deeply conditions dry hair while improving softness and shine

CoconutOil withCurry Leaves

Gently heating curry leaves in coconut oil creates a nourishing treatment that supports stronger-looking hair and adds natural shine

HAIRCAREHABITSWORTHADOPTING

Small daily habits often have the biggest impact

· Clean your hairbrush regularly

Wash pillowcases every few days to reduce oil and bacteria buildup

· Trim split ends every six to eight weeks

Use a wide-tooth comb instead of brushing aggressively

· Avoid tying your hair tightly when it's damp

Wear a scarf or carry an umbrella to protect your hair during unexpected showers

· If you get caught in the rain, rinse your hair with clean water as soon as you return home

QUICK MONSOON HAIR RESCUE TIPS

· Keep a lightweight anti-frizz serum in your handbag.

· Choose breathable hairstyles over tight buns.

· Avoid sharing combs and brushes.

· Limit the use of heavy styling creams.

· Protect chemically treated hair with leave-in conditioners.

· Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction.

· Don't ignore persistent dandruff, scalp pain, or excessive hair fall—consult a dermatologist if symptoms continue.

THE FINAL WORD

Monsoon hair care isn't about chasing miracle products or following complicated beauty trends it's about understanding what your hair needs during a season of constant environmental change. A clean scalp, gentle cleansing, proper conditioning, balanced nutrition, and mindful styling can make all the difference.

Remember, healthy hair is built through consistent care rather than occasional treatments. By embracing a simple yet effective routine, you'll spend less time battling frizz and hair fall and more time enjoying everything the monsoon has to offer

So, as the rain paints the world in shades of green, let your hair reflect the same vitality With a little extra care and the right habits, every day can be a good hair day even in the heart of the rainy season

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP?

While seasonal hair concerns are common, certain symptoms shouldn't be overlooked. If you're experiencing severe hair shedding for several weeks, bald patches, persistent scalp irritation, or intense itching that doesn't improve with regular care, it's best to consult a dermatologist or trichologist. Early diagnosis can prevent minor issues from becoming long-term concerns.

What is the gut-brain axis? What is the gut-brain axis?

Think of the gut-brain axis as a superhighway connecting your brain and your digestive system They are constantly talking to each other through the vagus nerve, chemical messengers, and immune signals. When you're stressed, your brain sends "alert" signals that slow down digestion or cause stomach cramps Conversely, when your gut is inflamed or out of balance, it sends distress signals right back up to the brain, affecting your mood, sleep, and energy levels

How does this impact women's health

For women, the gut plays a critical, often overlooked role in hormonal balance:

Periods & The "Estrobolome": A specific group of gut bacteria (called the estrobolome) produces an enzyme that helps metabolize and clear used estrogen from the body. If your gut flora is imbalanced, estrogen isn't excreted properly and gets reabsorbed into the bloodstream This estrogen dominance can worsen PMS symptoms, cause heavy or painful periods, and trigger hormonal acne.

Fertility & Conditions like PCOS: Gut dysbiosis triggers low-grade, systemic inflammation. In women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), this chronic inflammation exacerbates insulin resistance, which directly interferes with ovulation and egg quality Furthermore, stress-induced gut changes alter cortisol levels, which can disrupt the delicate hormonal signals needed for regular menstrual cycles and conception

Common Signs Your Gut Needs Attention Common Signs Your Gut Needs Attention

When your gut is out of balance, it usually speaks to you through clear symptoms Rather than treating these as minor inconveniences, think of them as your body's check-engine light

Digestive Warning Signs

Persistent Bloating & Gas: Feeling uncomfortably full or swollen shortly after eating

Irregular Bowel Movements: Chronic constipation (passing hard stools less than three times a week) or frequent loose stools/diarrhea.

Acid Reflux & Indigestion: Frequent heartburn or a feeling of heavy food sitting in your stomach for hours

Non-Digestive (Systemic) Warning Signs

Brain Fog & Unexplained Fatigue: Waking up tired even after 8 hours of sleep.

Stubborn Skin Issues: Sudden adult acne, eczema, or skin redness linked to gut-driven systemic inflammation

Constant Sugar Cravings: Opportunistic yeasts (like Candida) or bad bacteria feeding on refined carbs can alter signaling pathways to make you crave sugar 01 01 02 02

Limit

Daily Foods to Include & Foods to Limit Daily Foods Include & F

Nutrition shouldn't be about fear; it's about making smart, tolerable choices that nourish your gut bacteria while keeping you comfortable

Foods to Enjoy (And how to make them tolerable!) Foods to Enjoy (And how to make them tolerable!)

Legumes & Beans (Rajma, Chana, Dal): Many people avoid these because they cause gas The bloating comes from oligosaccharides (complex sugars) that human enzymes can't break down, so gut bacteria ferment them The fix: Soak legumes for 8–12 hours, discard the soaking water, and cook them with carminative spices (hing, jeera, ajwain, ginger). Soaking breaks down those gas-producing sugars!

Bananas: A gut-health powerhouse Slightly green (unripe) bananas are packed with resistant starch, a potent prebiotic that feeds good bacteria and forms short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) like butyrate to heal the gut lining. Yellow bananas are gentler on sensitive stomachs and easy to digest

Polyphenol-Rich Foods: Amla (Indian gooseberry), turmeric, green tea, pomegranates, and dark leafy greens. Polyphenols act as fuel for beneficial strains like Akkermansia

Foods to Specifically Limit Foods to Specifically Limit

Ultra-Processed Foods & Emulsifiers: Packaged snacks, instant noodles, and processed meats containing carboxymethylcellulose or polysorbate 80, which can strip the gut's protective mucus layer.

Excess Refined Maida & White Sugars: These lack fiber and rapidly feed pathogenic bacteria, causing rapid spikes in blood glucose and bacterial dysbiosis.

Excess Deep-Fried Foods: Reheated, oxidized cooking oils slow down stomach emptying, leading to acid reflux and altered bacterial compositions

04

Probiotics vs. Prebiotics & Probiotics vs. Prebiotics & The Truth About Supplements The Truth About Supplements

The Difference: Probiotics vs. Prebiotics

Probiotics: These are live, beneficial microorganisms (primarily specific strains of bacteria and yeast) that, when consumed in adequate amounts, offer health benefits. Think of them as the beneficial "guests" you invite into your digestive ecosystem.

Natural Sources: Fresh homemade curd (dahi), buttermilk (chaas), fermented vegetables, and traditional fermented beverages like kanji

Prebiotics: These are non-digestible dietary fibers and complex carbohydrates that pass through the upper digestive tract intact. They act as specialized "food" or fuel that selectively nourishes the beneficial bacteria already living in your large intestine

Natural Sources: Garlic, onions, slightly green bananas, oats, flaxseeds, apples, legumes, and whole grains

When Are When Are Probiotic Probiotic Supplements Supplements ACTUALLY ACTUALLY Recommended? Recommended?

For a healthy individual eating a balanced, diverse diet, daily probiotic pills are generally unnecessary food sources are more than enough However, clinical dietetic guidelines do recommend targeted probiotic supplementation under specific circumstances:

1.Post-Antibiotic Recovery: Antibiotics kill both harmful and beneficial bacteria indiscriminately. Clinical strains (such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or the beneficial yeast Saccharomyces boulardii) are recommended during and after a course of antibiotics to prevent antibiotic-associated diarrhea and help restore microbial diversity

2.Specific Gastrointestinal Conditions: Strains matter significantly in clinical nutrition. Specific multi-strain probiotics or targeted formulations are evidence-backed to manage symptoms like chronic bloating, pain, and irregular motility in conditions like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

3.High Consumption of Artificial Sweeteners: Non-nutritive sweeteners (such as sucralose or saccharin) have been shown in research to alter the gut microbiota composition and impair glucose tolerance When reducing these additives, targeted prebiotic fiber and probiotic support can help reverse sweetener-induced dysbiosis

Lifestyle & Gut Health: Lifestyle & Gut Health:

You cannot out-eat a lifestyle that constantly stresses your nervous system Your gut microbes react in real time to your daily routine:

Stress & Cortisol: When you are chronically stressed, your "fight-or-flight" system diverts blood flow away from the digestive tract. This slows digestion, weakens the mucosal barrier, and makes the gut wall more permeable ("leaky gut")

Sleep Deprivation: Your gut microbiome has its own circadian rhythm. Sleeping less than 7 hours disrupts the normal metabolic cycles of your microbes, reducing species diversity and promoting insulin resistance

Physical Movement: Regular, low-to-moderate exercise (like brisk walking or yoga) stimulates peristalsis the natural muscular contractions of your intestines preventing sluggish digestion and constipation.

Why do we say "listen to your gut"? Because your digestive system contains the Enteric Nervous System (ENS) - over 100 million nerve cells embedded in the lining of your gastrointestinal tract!

Mood & Mental Well-being: Up to 90% of your body's serotonin (the "happy" neurotransmitter) is produced in the gut, facilitated by gut bacteria An inflamed gut often leads to anxiety and low mood due to altered neurotransmitter production

Immune System Base Camp: Nearly 70–80% of your body’s immune cells live in the Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (GALT). Your gut microbes essentially "train" these immune cells to recognize real threats (viruses, bad bacteria) while preventing the body from overreacting to harmless foods or attacking its own tissues (autoimmunity)

Common Trend / Myth

Gut Health Myths Debunked Gut Health Myths Debunked

The Scientific Reality

"Drinking ghee on an empty stomach melts fat and fixes the gut."

"Everyone should take a daily probiotic supplement."

"Raw, extreme salad diets heal the gut."

"Juice cleanses flush out toxins."

Myth / Misinterpreted. While ghee contains butyric acid (which supports colon cell health), drinking raw ghee on an empty stomach adds dense calories and can trigger severe acid reflux or diarrhea in people with sluggish gallbladders or IBS. Eat ghee in moderation cooked with your food!

Myth. Over-the-counter probiotic pills can cause temporary bloating or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) if taken unnecessarily. Food-first is best for healthy adults Probiotics should be taken only if recommended.

Myth. Raw vegetables are heavy in insoluble fiber and tough cell walls. For an inflamed or weak digestive system, raw salads often cause extreme bloating and pain Cooked, warm meals are much easier to break down.

Myth. Juicing discards the insoluble fiber that feeds your gut microbes and creates a high-fructose spike in your bloodstream. Your liver and kidneys handle detoxing naturally

Five Sustainable Daily Habits for a Healthy Gut Five Sustainable Daily Habits Healthy Gut

To make real, long-term progress, focus on simple routines you can stick with for years:

1 Prioritize Water & Hydration: Water is required to mix with dietary fiber to form smooth stools Aim for 2 5 to 3 liters daily Lack of water is the #1 cause of routine constipation!

2 Eat Whole Fruits, Don't Juice Them: Eat fruits with their skin on when edible (like apples, pears, and guavas). The skins contain pectin and insoluble fiber that sweep the digestive tract and feed good bacteria.

3 Aim for 30 Different Plants a Week: It sounds like a lot, but spices, herbs, seeds, nuts, lentils, and vegetables all count! Diversity in plant foods equals diversity in your gut microbiome

4 Chew Your Food 20–30 Times: Digestion starts in the mouth Amylase in your saliva begins breaking down carbs, and smaller food particles mean less strain on your stomach acid and enzymes

5.Honor a 12-Hour Overnight Fast: Finish dinner by 8:00 PM and eat breakfast at 8:00 AM. This 12-hour break allows the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC) your gut's internal sweeping mechanism to clear out undigested food debris and bacteria.

Traditional Indian Foods and Practices Traditional Indian Foods and Practices That Deserve Attention That Deserve Attention

The traditional Indian meal structure particularly when viewed through the lens of a balanced thali is naturally aligned with modern microbiome science It incorporates an optimal balance of soluble fiber, insoluble fiber, resistant starch, and live fermented cultures Specific Gut-Boosting Thali Elements:

Fiber Diversity Beyond Wheat & Rice: Incorporating traditional millets like Ragi (finger millet), Jowar (sorghum), or Bajra (pearl millet), as well as unpolished red or brown rice, provides complex prebiotic fibers that slow down digestion and feed beneficial colon bacteria.

Carminative Tempering (Tadka): The traditional practice of tempering cooked dals and vegetables with hing (asafoetida), jeera (cumin), ajwain (carom seeds), and ginger isn't just for flavor. These culinary spices possess scientifically validated carminative properties they relax gastrointestinal smooth muscle, reduce intestinal gas formation, and accelerate digestive enzyme activity

Fermented Dairy & Condiments: Fresh, home-set dahi (curd) or chaas (spiced buttermilk) introduced alongside cooked meals provides lactic acid bacteria that aid overall digestion.

Lacto-Fermented Specialties: Traditional seasonal preparations like kanji (a fermented beverage made from black carrots or beetroot, mustard seeds, and water) and oil-free, salt-fermented homemade pickles (amla or green chili) serve as rich, natural sources of wild probiotics that promote gut diversity.

The One Takeaway for Readers-

"Your gut isn't a passive food processor it's a living garden You don't need expensive supplements or extreme cleanses to care for it; you just need to feed it a diverse diet, give it rest overnight, and protect it from chronic stress. Nourish your microbes, and they will protect your health for a lifetime "
