FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Two prominent festivals this month! A retentive stretch of delight, as one may expect. And time just seems to goes by so fast when one is involved in any activity, which yields joy and peace. But living it up is all that matters, isn’t it? While in the midst of making articles, I realized how these two festivals had a transforming influence on Indian history and people and changed the way we look at mythology. Tulip therefore wishes all the readers, a prosperous Dussehra, followed by the most awaited fete of Diwali with showers of benevolence. Put your faith in what you most believe in. Versatile Bollywood actor Imran Khan sports on the cover this issue. He talks about his success on his recent flick Delhi Belly and of course about his different role in his latest – Meri Brother Ki Dulhan and how it was like, acting next to Katrina Kaif. Tulip Special also features an article on how tough it is for kids, if their parents live separately and how much it affects the kids’ lives. Notable fitness expert of Hyderabad, Anukriti Sharma highlights the importance of staying fit in today’s world and also on how Boot-Camp workout can help one burn those extra calories. Mexico was picked out as one of the ten countries in the world, with wonderful beaches and tourist locations and hence, a coverage on the best places to visit there. There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one among them. It is the mother of all languages! Bina Mehta, a renowned classical dancer teaching the socialites in Hyderabad, graces in A Day From Her Diary. The other day, I had quite an unusual conversation with a stranger, while I was on my way to home, after work. Though I do not remember how and where did it all start but I ended up hearing from him, ‘the path towards bad is always near and easy but towards good is always tough initially, but eventually, one will achieve success and righteousness if chosen good.’ Though I was aware of this moral, it was not something one would expect to hear from a stranger, but I realized I learned a lesson from him, as I left him and made my way. A lesson I can remember forever! THREE THINGS I LEARNED FROM THIS ISSUE – 19th century illusionistic art of Realism and the way it conveyed a truthful and an objective vision of contemporary life. Elegant fashion statements of India – the history and beauty of unembellished ethnic attire. India is the land of festivals and the immeasurable happiness that we share with family and friends, during festivals.

TAYLOR LAUTNER

Blown Away, After Watching Breaking Dawn!

H O L L Y W O O D

Taylor Lautner has laid eyes on something Twi-hards are dying to see - The Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn – Part 1. ‘I have seen it!’ Taylor told Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson at the junket for his latest movie, Abduction, in Los Angeles. ‘To be honest, I was blown away!’ 19-year-old star, who plays werewolf Jacob Black, said of the latest movie in the wildly popular vampire series. It’s going to be very exciting for the fans to see this one. It’s the same characters, but in a completely different light. One character that will definitely look different when she steps into the light and that will be Kristen Stewart’s role as Bella Swann. ‘Bella is pretty hot as a vampire’ Taylor said with a smile. ‘Pretty hot, I’ve got to admit it.’ Abduction debuts on September 23 and Breaking Dawn – Part 1 will hit the theaters on November 18, 2011.

LINDSAY PULSIPHER

The Story of Bonnie And Clyde Lindsay Pulsipher will replace Hilary Duff in The Story of Bonnie and Clyde. Pulsipher is currently filming the History Channel miniseries The Hatfields and McCoys opposite Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton. She also played Crystal Norris on HBO’s True Blood and starred in The Oregonian, which premiered at the Sundance Film Fest in January. Her movie, Meth Head, co-starring Lukas Haas, will be released this year. ‘We are thrilled to welcome Lindsay Pulsipher as Bonnie Parker in The Story of Bonnie and Clyde. Lindsay will undoubtedly bring many layers to this critical role,’ says producer Tonya S. Holly of Cypress Moon Productions in a statement. ‘This is a gripping story about two of the most legendary fugitives in history.’ Pulsipher is represented by Mathews Management and The Gersh Agency. Holly wrote the script and will direct. Filming will take place in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Missouri. Producers Holly and Tom Rogers denied that Duff was not selected for the movie in August because she announced she was expecting her first child with husband Mike Comrie, a hockey player.

TWO AND A HALF MEN Or Charlie Sheen?

As far as Two and a Half Men went, well, judging by the enormous amount of cheers when Ashton’s character, Walden Schmidt, appeared onscreen after a sentimental conversation between Alan and the cremated Charlie, people were happy to see his face regardless of his performance. But that, of course, was not lacking! Who doesn’t have a soft spot for a heartbroken billionaire who is extremely handsome (and hung according to Jon Cryer’s character) and also has a way with the ladies? And as promised, Kutcher bared it all a couple of times! And it looks like Sheen was watching the show, as well. He also tweeted saying – ‘Watching my funeral as my party gets rolling’ while thanking his friend for a great food. He also said – ‘Surrounded by friends and watching the premier of Two And A Half Men... Odd! But cool! So far a lot of laughs!’ There was obviously a lot more that happened in the premiere, but seeing Ashton naked pretty much took the cake. 14 OCTOBER, 2011

No sooner Madhuri Dixit announced her comeback news on twitter, she was flooded with offers. The makers of Bigg Boss decided to cash on the opportunity and approach Madhuri to be a part of the show. SONAKSHI SINHA

Professionalism Over Personal Life! A fresh pair in making! We are talking about Shahid Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha here. Reportedly the two will be seen in Sabbir Khan’s next untitled romantic flick. It is heard that Sonakshi Sinha has given a miss to a Yash Raj Film venture with Ranveer Singh and has now opted to work with Shahid Kapoor instead. The actress does not want to mix her professional life with personal. According to a trusted source, Sonakshi was offered a film opposite to Ranveer singh by YRF, but has now decided to take on Sajid Nadiadwala’s project instead. The latest buzz doing the rounds is that Sonakshi and Ranveer may maintain their ‘Just friends’ tag. However the fact is that duo are dating each other, adds the sources. However, when it came to her career, Sonakshi decided to opt for shahid over Ranveer. She has given the same dates to Sajid which were required by YRF for the Ranveer starrer.

ASH SHOOTS Despite Pregnancy

Bollywood Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is six months pregnant but this doesn’t prevent the beauty from fulfilling her commitments. She seems to be enjoying her pre-motherhood phase. She has been sincerely associated with Lux soap for several years and she kept her words by shooting for the brand recently in Bangkok. The actress shoots for Lux ad in Bangkok. Dressed in a peach grown, she looked elegant and stunning. Her baby bump was quite evident. She was glowing and was full of energy. She was snapped on the sets and was wearing an off-shoulder peachcoloured gown. The mommy-to-be reached the sets on time and was extremely professional. ‘Ash looked amazing as usual during the shoot in Bangkok. She was glowing and full of energy and excitement,’ quoted Mickey Contractor. Soon after the shoot, she flew over to London with husband Abhishek Bachchan. But her pregnancy has been creating problems in her film career. She had to leave Madhur Bhandarkar’s film Heroine which demanded a perfect figure for the actress in the lead role. OCTOBER, 2011 15

ENTERTAINMENT

Djokovic conquers Nadal Historic seasons are usually hard to come by, but not as much in the last decade. However, Novak Djokovic’s run to his first US Open title in a year when he also won the Australian Open again and grabbed his first Wimbledon crown is right up there with John McEnroe’s incredible 1984 season, Roger Federer’s whirlwind 2004-07 seasons (the Swiss won three Slams in 2004, 2006 and 2007) and slightly better than the three-Slam 2010 season put together by the man he vanquished, 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, in the 2011 final, Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard did not see radical differences in his game but important ones. ‘He’s having fewer mistakes than before’ Nadal said. ‘He’s enough confident in every moment to keep believing in one more ball, one more ball. So that’s why, I think his forehand is not more painful than before; his backhand is not more painful than before; he serve the same. Don’t know if he’s bringing tennis to another level.’ Djokovic said – ‘I had an amazing year so far and it keeps going.’

LPGA TOUR

Thompson Seals Alabama Win

S P O R T S

American Lexi Thompson became the youngest winner in the 61-year history of the LPGA Tour with a commanding victory in the Navistar LPGA Classic. Thompson, who is 16 years, seven months and eight days old, shot a closing 70 to finish 17 under par and win by five shots from compatriot Tiffany Joh. Before Thompson’s win, Marlene Hagge been the youngest winner on tour, although the 1952 Sarasota Open was just an 18-hole event when she won it aged 18 years and 14 days. Thompson’s father Scott was her caddie this week and she said – ‘Just being there with my dad. He was like - Lexi, just enjoy that walk (up the 18th). He told me, ‘I am going off to the side because I might cry.’ I definitely cried after I finished. ‘Just finishing that with my dad on the bag, it was the best experience. I wouldn’t be out here without my dad and my mom, of course,’ she said.

SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX Hamilton’s Take On It!

Lewis Hamilton is looking forward to the Singapore Grand Prix and hopes to repeat the success he enjoyed, two seasons ago. The McLaren driver, who was the reigning world champion then, beat Timo Glock and Fernando Alonso at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in 2009. Looking ahead to the highly-anticipated night race in Singapore, Hamilton revealed the circuit is one of his favourite due to the challenges it pose to the drivers. ‘I love street circuits and I really enjoy this place - it’s almost two tracks in one - there are quite a few fast corners, which require good set-up and a bit of commitment, but there are also lots of tighter 90-degree bends, which are slower and more technical,’ he was quoted as saying in the official F1 website. Hamilton, who has had his fair share of critics this season for his dangerous style of driving, believes he can afford to be more patient in Singapore - but that doesn’t mean he will compromise on his desire to win. THE DANCING QUEEN ‘My passion for dancing started way back, when I was 5 years old. Being born and brought up in Kolkata, I also learned Bharatnatyam there. I love and teach other genres of dances like – ethnic, cultural, Gajiyo and Marwari. I do this all as a passion and nothing beyond that. A dancer should have sheer patience, continuous training and perseverance and in order to make it big, one has to carry the same intensity of love for that art. One of the most important aspects about dancing is to feel every beat in the music and to have fun and enjoy every step. The true colours of a person appear in dancing!’

TOY DOGS

The Maltese is a breed of small dogs in toy group. Characteristics include slightly rounded skulls, with a finger-wide dome and black nose that is two fingerwidths long. The body is compact with the length equalling the height. The drop ears with long hair and dark eyes, surrounded by darker skin pigmentation halo, gives Maltese their expressive look. Their noses can fade and become pink or light brown in color without exposure to sunlight. This is often referred to as a winter-nose and many times will become black again with increased exposure to the sun. old. They should be then fed two times a day for the rest of their lives. If you are feeding a dry kibble, you may wish to soak the kibble in water to soften this for younger puppies. By the time they are three to four months old they should be eating the kibble dry or with a little canned food mixed in. Look for a kibble that comes in small bites. Feeding a dry kibble will help with teeth and gum problems.

CARE

P E T S

Maltese have no undercoat and have little to no shedding if cared for properly. Like their relatives Poodles and Bichon Frisé, they are considered to be largely hypoallergenic and many people who are allergic to dogs may not be allergic to the Maltese. Daily cleaning is required to prevent the risk of tear-staining. Regular grooming is also required to prevent the coats of non-shedding dogs from matting. Dark staining in the hair around the eyes, can be a problem in this breed and is mostly a function of how much the dog’s eyes water and the size of the tear ducts. Tear stain can be readily removed if a fine-toothed metal comb, moistened with lukewarm water, is carefully drawn through the snout hair, just below the eyes. This maintenance activity must be performed every two or three days, as a layer of sticky film is quick to redevelop. If the face is kept dry and cleaned daily, the staining can be minimized. Many veterinarians recommend avoiding food treated with food colouring and serving distilled water to reduce tear staining. There are also a few products on the market, for preventing tear stains.

FEEDING YOUR MALTESE Puppies should be fed three times a day until they are three months

FEEDING OLDER MALTESE As Maltese becomes older, nutritional requirements may change! As they turn older, they will naturally become less active than they were puppies and young adults and therefore may need less energy from the diet. A special diet is needed as they grow older. Adjustment in the content of protein they get might be needed as organs can become less efficient in dealing with food. Many of the major brands of dog food have formulae available for the elderly dogs.

EAT STREET @ NECKLACE ROAD Eat Street is a lovely place to hang out with family or friends. There is a play area for children as well, with lovely multi-hued flowers around growing abundantly. There is a merry-goround and baby cars for kids to play. They also have boating on the lake originating from the premises. The seating is partly open air and partly under a cover which is still open to the lake on one side. But if all you want is a place to sip a coffee and relax with your book or friends, then take your coffee and head upstairs. The feeling there is even more relaxed! One can find famous eating out places like - Pizza Hut, Minerva Coffee Shop, Baskin Robbins and other outlets serving exotic cuisines as well. Rest assured there are enough choices whether you are looking for a coffee, ice-cream, snacks, chaat or even a proper meal. The Chinese served at Wok of the Town is quite good. The combos are affordable, which include some noodles / rice, a main dish and a starter. Really worth it and quite filling! Take a walk around the place to digest all that you have just eaten and enjoy the view some more. Quite a romantic place too! If you want to take your date out to a place, which won’t burn a hole in your wallet, then Eat Street is the place!

The movie also stars the popular villain and character actor Pran.

1961

The movie stars Shammi Kapoor, Lalita Pawar, Shashikala and Asit Sen. Saira Banu, in her debut film, earned a Filmfare nomination as Best Actress and became a star. The movie was a light hearted musical that further enhanced Shammi Kapoor’s stature as the youth icon of the times. The Yahoo song became a symbol of Shammi’s wild (Junglee) lover boy image of the times. The movie became a super hit at the box office.

Wealthy and pampered Rajiv Lal (Shammi Kapoor) is the only son of widowed Rani Maa. She would like him to get married and starts receiving proposals from all over the country. 1964

The movie brought together Shammi Kapoor and the legendary beauty Sadhana. Rajkumar was a fun tale about palace intrigues and mystery and Shammi Kapoor was perfectly cast in the role of the modern prince. The success of the movie was an indication that Shammi Kapoor’s distinct style was something that Bollywood audiences were beginning to like. His character was called Prince Bhanu Pratap Singh. The movie is set in a kingdom ruled over by Prince Bhanu Pratap Singh’s father.

Mr. Srivastava lives a very wealthy lifestyle with his wife and two sons, Mahendra and Sunder. He plans to get both his sons married to women from equally wealthy backgrounds. This does not happen, as Mahendra falls in love with Seema, who is poor and lives with her stepmother. This creates considerable acrimony in the family and Seema is not accepted as a daughter-in-law. Unable to find a solution, Mahendra takes to alcohol and falls in the bewitching clutches of a beautiful courtesan by the name of Bahaar. While vacationing in Srinagar, Sunder meets with Sapna, who also comes from a poor family, falls in love with her and wants to marry her. She too falls in love with him! She and Anil fall in love, but he doesn’t know how to tell her that he and Rocky are the same.

The Bhappi Sonie-Shammi Kapoor pairing gave us Janwar, Preetam and this movie. A fourth one is Jawan Mohabbat. Shammi’s performance in this heart warming tale of a penniless bachelor who has opened up his heart and his house to a bunch of (equally irrepressible) homeless orphans won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor. Brahmachari (Shammi Kapoor) lives with his servant Choti (Mohan Choti), twelve children whom he’s picked up from the street and a dog. His house is mortgaged to the hilt and if he doesn’t pay up at least some of the interest soon, they will all be out on the street.

She eventually gives birth to a baby boy Deepu (Master Alankar). Sheetal then seeks employment and gets a job as a teacher. One of her students is a child named Muni, whose dad is a widower, Ravi (Shammi Kapoor). Since their circumstances are similar, they become very close and eventually decide to marry.

Ranbir Kapoor finally had a chance to share screen space with the legendary actor Shammi Kapoor in Rockstar. Though Shammi ji did many cameos on request for various Bollywood movies, his grand-nephew Ranbir only had the great and rare opportunity to act with him when his movie Rockstar happened. Director Imtiaz Ali is still in awe of this jubilant man, who in spite of being on dialysis for the last ten years, agreed to do his film Rockstar. Imtiaz reminisces about Shammi ji and says – ‘We all knew that the Rockstar was on sets and all of us including Ranbir were just his attendants.’

ealism rejects imaginative idealization in favour of a close observation of outward appearances. It sets as a goal not imitating past artistic achievements, but the truthful and accurate depiction of the models, which nature and contemporary life offer to the artist. In a broader sense, Realism comprised many artistic currents in different civilizations. In the visual arts, it can be found in ancient Hellenistic Greek sculptures accurately portraying boxers and decrepit old women. The works of such 17th-century painters as - Caravaggio, the Dutch genre painters, the Spanish painters José de Ribera, Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Zurbarán and the Le Nain brothers in France were realistic in their approaches. The works of the 18th-century English novelists Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding and Tobias Smollett were also realistic. Realism emerged in the aftermath of the Revolution of 1848 overturned the monarchy of Louis-Philippe and developed during the period of the Second Empire, under Napoleon III. In France, Realism expresses a taste for democracy. At the

Three Women In Church - WILHELM LEIBL same time, in England artists - Realists came before the public with the reaction against the Victorian Materialism and the conventions of the Royal Academy in London. In spite of its social inclinations, Realism produces no new style in architecture and few valuable sculptures. It was the time of introduction of new technologies in constructions. The revolutionary modular construction and largest spans in structural skeleton which could then be mass-produced - used on exhibition halls, railway stations; the use of cast iron as building material and invention of twisted-wire cable extended main spans of bridges in Europe and United States. Less positive attitude toward technological progress can be seen in the first attempts, to incorporate structural iron into architecture proper.

‘Realism in relation to art is when the subject of the artist is shown in a realistic manner, as close to ‘reality’ as possible - the way the subject actually looked.’ Artists of the Realism period focused on the study of science and the optical effects of light within everyday world and as such rejected the use of the imagination as a direct subject for their art. It was their belief that science held the key to all of the problems humans face in day-to-day lives. As a result, a tendency flourished among Realists to produce paintings which reflected the everyday mental experiences of contemporary life. This included abstract concepts such as cultures, problems and customs which tended to focus specifically on the immediate surrounds of the artist and thusly include objects and people, traditionally not considered of any artistic merit. Naturally, this pointed the focus away from the pristine idyll of imagination and perception that had its basis in academic art and focused on those individuals who were ignored, such as the everyday man in his usual environment. It is because of those principles that Realism extended well into the sociopolitical environment and formed branches such as social Realism and to a further extreme, socialist Realism.

n So Much Pretty, Cara Hoffman weaves three main story lines together while juggling more than half a dozen other characters’ voices and perspectives and slowly revealing what exactly Alice Piper did and why she did it. Hoffman digs into the tension between ideology and reality and she keeps readers on the edge of their seats while helping them step into the roles of detective and social commentator. Hoffman’s characters are riveting, but only her readers know the whole story and she succeeds in making the gritty work of putting the pieces together feel exciting and fresh. This book is more than a page-turner. It is a haunting, thought-provoking important novel in disguise as a thriller. Hoffman presents violence against women and explores what happens when communities allow men to become perpetrators and to go unpunished. Through Alice Piper, she examines the consequences of raising children who are book-smart but naive to how the world really works. And she does it all with terrific pacing and the kind of pitch-perfect writing that makes your heart race and keeps you up at night.

But the real beauty of The Fates Will Find Their Way does not lie in Pittard’s skillfully crafted narrative (undeniably influenced by Jeffrey Eugenides’s phenomenal The Virgin Suicides) or the way in which she weaves the six boys’ fantasies about Nora into their collective voice, but in the fact that she pulls off the neat trick of making us think that the book is ever really about Nora at all. Pittard pulls us in with a familiar plotline - this is hardly the first time a novel has opened with the apparent tragedy of a teenage girl gone missing - and she makes us feel comfortable just long enough to get us to let our guard down. DJ Vijay

started as DJ almost seven years back. I took this as my part time job but then it became my career. And since then I never looked back. I performed at Hard Rock café (Mumbai and Pune), Firangi Panni (Mumbai and Pune), Marine Plaza (Mumbai), 21 F (Mumbai). Now I am at Hyderabad to rock people over here.

M U S I C

I was doing my Engineering in Mumbai. But I never wanted to be an engineer. I was following my parents’ dream. Here in Mumbai too I was following my hobby of listening to and collecting international music albums. I got access to different international albums because of Mumbai. And a result of which I failed in second year exams. I had to leave my hostel. I took up a part time job as I did not want to give burden of staying with my parents. Considering my hobby my best friend suggested me to take up job which will allow me to persue my hobby. So I worked in music store where I got access to whole new world of music. Here I got my first break as an assistant DJ and that too at Hard Rock Café just because of my passion and knowledge in rock music. I learned so much at this club! It made me understand the profession of DJ. It’s like producing a new music and I found what I wanted to be. I decided to make career as DJ and it was against my parents dream. I continued working during the day and simultaneously performed at night in the clubs. I started making my music sets, searched for new music on internet, collected new albums and for that I used to work till early mornings. It was so tiring sometimes but I was knowing I am following my dream. I didn’t restrict myself to only rock, I worked hard on other genres of music too! I faced lot of obstacles many times in life. But my best friend, Geeta always supported me to stand up in life and go further and made me tough. This is just the beginning of my dream, I still have to go further and I know Hyderabad people will also enjoy my music. Cuba Libre will be one of the milestones.

TOP TEN CLUB TRACKS -

Hyderabad crowd is very much music loving. This is a very happening city and I find it similar to Mumbai. I have seen them enjoying all kind of music, amazing people! At Cuba Libre,

we have different nights on week days. It includes video night on Sunday and Hyderabad

crowd really appreciated this new trend. Also here we have Karaoke nights, Bollywood specials and Salsa night. And we are getting amazing response for all of them. Looking at the success of these new trends we will be coming up with new exciting things further. So Hyderabad, keep rocking! 36 OCTOBER, 2011

he word Guadalajara comes from the Arab word Wadi-al-Hajara, which means Valley of stones. This second largest city in the world is considered as a colonial city, though much of its architecture dates from the independence period. Tlaquepaque offers an old town area with a Mexican village setting. It has an important shopping district as it is a main arts and crafts center within Mexico. This old town offers many interesting restaurants, galleries, a regional ceramics museum and a Premio Nacional de la Ceramica (National Ceramics Awards) museum. Plaza de Armas, south of the cathedral offers one of the best views of the cathedral and the Palacio de Gobierno. It features a French ironwork bandstand bought by former Mexican president Porfirio Diaz during 1885 and four States on the corners of the place, symbolizing the four seasons. Guadalajara is the birthplace of Mariachi music and the city hosts an annual Mariachi bash in September. Besides Mariachi music, there is a vibrant music scene in the city. The city is also a birth place of Tequilas. In February the foundation of the city is celebrated in March - International Cinema Festival, in May - the International Cultural Festival, in September - the International Festival of Mariachi and Charreria, the October fairy and in December - the International Fairy Book, which is the most important in the entire American continent.

It is the largest ball court in ancient Mesoamerica. Outside the Ossario Platform is this recently restored temple which overlooks the other large cenote at Chichen Itza, named after the Maya word for iguana, Xtoloc. The temple contains a series of pilasters carved with images of people, as well as representations of plants, birds and mythological scenes. to the hotel’s bird refuge and extensive nature trails. If one sits at the bottom of the stairs, the sound of footsteps from people above you is like raindrops falling into a water-filled bucket rather than footsteps. The effect is caused by sound skimming the surface of the staircase. The sound reflects off the regular pattern of the stairs, creating a very distinctive effect. There are other archaeological and historical sites like Temple of the Bearded Man, Temples of the Jaguar, Platform of Eagles and Jaguars and Platform of Venus.

ACAPULCO One of Mexico’s main tourist attractions is the beautiful coastline. Acapulco delivers one of the most pristine beach experiences in the country, with a variety of sun-filled adventures just waiting to be discovered. Fishing for sailfish, scuba diving, jet skiing and other water sports are a few of the water activities available. At night, Acapulco’s massive nightclubs fill to capacity with partygoers from across the globe. Party until sunrise and then recover from your night of dancing by relaxing on one of the many warm, sandy Mexican beaches. The city is best known as one of Mexico’s oldest and most well-known beach resorts, which came into prominence by the 1950s as a getaway for Hollywood stars. Another enigmatic attraction at Acapulco is the La Quebrada Cliff Divers. The tradition started in the 1930s when young men casually competed against each other to see who could dive from the highest point into the sea below. In the old part of the city, there is a traditional main square called the Zócalo with shade trees and lined with cafes and shops. At the north end of the Nuestra Senora de la Soledad, cathedral with blue onion-shaped domes and Byzantine towers is seen.

CANCUN Cancun is definitely Mexico’s showcase resort. Cancun offers a plethora of activities so much so that, it is impossible to do everything in one vacation. Just one of many things to do it to take a trip to Rio Secreto, a secret underground river that, until now, has remained unexplored for thousands of years. Interactive Aquarium - right in the middle of the hotel zone, this small but modern aquarium lets you get up close and personal with aquatic life. You can pet Rays, nurse Sharks, touch Star-

COZUMEL The most beautiful and luscious tropical getaway destinations in the world! Another fun activity that many people choose to participate, while in Cozumel is - charter fishing. This is a viable tourist trade in Cozumel and often provides outsiders with the chance to catch fish they wouldn’t normally be able to hook. It’s a place, which once visited, can never be forgotten. Its wealth of perfect waters, wonderful climate and truly hospitable people will make this destination a regular on your list of Caribbean island must-dos.

fish, etc. There is also a chance to swim with dolphins in a large pool. Cancun is possibly best known for its beautiful turquoise waters and powdery white beaches. Isla Contoy, is about 30 km (19 mi) north of Isla Mujeres and apart from its natural beauty it is considered to be the most important nesting place for sea birds in the Mexican Caribbean with more than 150 different species. At Punta Este Marina, one can drive a boat through the lagoon in the Jungle and snorkel through the reef. Spas in Cancun offer treatments combining native, ancient mayan healing rituals and modern stress-reducing techniques. Coba - a beautiful site; it was one the largest Maya cities in ancient times, but much is still hidden under lush jungle. It boasts the tallest pyramid of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Nohoch Mul. Muyil boasts a lake surrounded by many Maya constructions. El Castillo, which is at Tulum, is a large pyramid that sits on a forty-foot cliff. El Castillo is thought to be a part of a series of lighthouses.

CEROCAHUI Up in the high Sierra Tarahumara, far from where the large tours stop, one will find a peaceful little town surrounding a former mission. Nearby are two small hotels which are even more peaceful - no phones, no crowds, no traffic, just beautiful mountains and canyons clothed in pine forests. OCTOBER, 2011 39

BEAUTY

BE BEAUTIFUL

FOREVER!

We all like to have young, radiant and supple skin forever. That’s why it comes as something of a shock when we look in the mirror one day and see the appearance of the first fine line or wrinkle, which then seems to rapidly spread across the face. There are many things which can contribute the appearance of wrinkles, lines, blotches and other blemishes.

Primarily, it is a natural process for aging skin because as we grow older, elasticity of skin gets weaker so it is harder for the skin to spring back into place. Other factors can include - Smoking, unprotected Sun exposure (UV rays), Stress, Poor facial/skin care and many others. No matter how old we are, we all want to enjoy the benefits of healthy skin - that’s why the anti aging skincare industry has become a multi-billion dollar one. The good news is that you can use natural skin care combined with a change in lifestyle to improve the texture, tone and feel of your skin and to reduce lines and wrinkles which can make your skin look aged. Home remedies and a healthy lifestyle can help you feel and look younger We have heard of old wives tales and many people treat them with severe scepticism. But, as the saying goes, there is no smoke without fire and many of the home remedies which are regarded as old wives tales really do have substance to them. You can look young without having to refinance your home, by using some of these incredibly simple methods -

PINEAPPLE APPLE JUICE You can treat fine lines, fine wrinkles and cracked skin by applying the juice of green apples to your face each day. You should leave the juice on for around ten to fifteen minutes each day before rinsing off. This is one of those home remedies that can help you to look younger and add a real zing to your day. The aroma and zest of the apples will put a spring in your step while the juices get to work on your skin.

CUCUMBER If you are having problems with discolored age spots, you may find that cucumber juice is very effective in bleaching out these age spots. Simply combine cucumber juice with water (one tbsp of juice to two tbsp of water) and apply to the affected areas twice daily. Dab the solution on in the morning and at night and allow to dry on the affected area.

If you want another fruity way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, you can use the juice or the core of a fresh pineapple. Apply the juice either by hand or by rubbing the core over your face and leave it on for ten to fifteen minutes. You can enjoy the tropical aroma of this home remedy while the pineapple juice helps to improve the tone and texture of your skin, enabling you to feel fresh and look younger.

PAPAYA JUICE This fruit contains an enzyme that can remove dead surface skin. So, if you have rough skin or blemishes, fresh papaya juice rubbed into the skin can remove the affected skin and leave you with softer, smoother skin.

NOURISHING FACE MASK If you want to enjoy a more luxurious home remedy, you can make up your own face mask. This will leave your skin feeling supple and revitalized and can help you look younger by replenishing your skin. Combine a couple of tablespoons of natural whole yogurt with a tablespoon of pure liquid honey. Squeeze in some cucumber juice and give the whole mixture a good stir. Chill the mixture in the fridge for a short while (you don’t want to get it too cold, but refrigerating it for a short while will help to set it so that it won’t slide off your face). Apply the mixture to your face liberally, lie back, pop a couple of cucumber slices onto your eyes to soothe them and simply relax for about fifteen minutes. Afterwards, rinse the facemask off your face and pat dry. You can then moisturize your face and you should be left with smoother, softer and suppler skin. You can do this once or twice a week to help keep your skin nourished and replenished.

When talking about home remedies in relation to skin care, many people instantly imagine creams, potions and lotions. However, part of helping your skin to look younger is combining remedies like the ones above with an improved lifestyle and some other simple procedures. By following the steps below you can enjoy younger looking skin for longer -

Other home remedies to help your skin look younger -

DIET

WATER

Your diet can have a surprising effect upon the condition of your skin. Most people associate rich, fatty foods with weight gain and sluggishness, but these foods can also result in poor skin condition. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and vitamin-E rich foods can help to keep your skin in good condition and help keep signs of aging at bay.

If you start to dehydrate on the inside, the effects will also show on the outside and dehydrated skin can experience all sorts of problems, from dryness and roughness to loss of elasticity and increased wrinkling. It is vital to drink around eight glasses of water a day to keep your skin in top condition.

PROTECTION FROM THE SUN The UV rays from the Sun can have a very harmful effect on the skin and not only do unprotected sun worshippers risk cancer, but they are also likely to see their skin wrinkle and age very prematurely (depending on the amount of time spent in the sun). You should try and avoid being out in the intense midday sun at all, as this is when the heat and rays are at their worst. However, whatever time of day you go out, you should wear an appropriate SFP sunscreen or moisturizer to stop your skin from burning and losing its elasticity.

MASSAGE A five minute facial massage each day can help to keep your skin looking younger and wrinkle-free for longer. You should take off all make-up, wash your face and remove any excess oils by using a suitable cleanser or use the juice from a fresh lime to do this. Starting from your neck up, gently yet firmly, massage in an upward motion right up to your hairline. Once you have done this, rinse your face and apply a suitable moisturizing cream or lotion. When you apply your cream or lotion, apply it in using the same upward motion so that it is massaged into the skin.

REDUCE STRESS QUIT SMOKING If you smoke, you’ve probably heard many reasons why you should give up this habit. One of them is that smoking can age your skin prematurely and leave you with deep and numerous wrinkles. Quitting smoking can help you enjoy younger looking skin for longer, as well as help you with your health.

Stress is another factor that can affect our skin and leaves us looking and feeling old before our time. In order to try and enjoy younger looking skin, you need to take the time to relax and de-stress. Make sure that you put a little time aside each day to really relax and get things into perspective. Whether your idea of pure relaxation is a long, luxurious bubble bath or curling up with a good book, take the time to try and relax each and every day.

USE THESE TIPS TO ENJOY YOUNGER, FRESHER AND MORE REJUVENATED SKIN The tips above are designed to help you make the most of your precious skin and to look and feel good for as long as possible. By combining this simple skin treatments, you could enjoy more resilient, supple and fresher looking skin. These steps are really simple to follow and will cost next to nothing to try. Taking five or ten minutes a day to look after your skin can make a real difference to the appearance of your skin. By keeping your skin clean, well nourished, hydrated and moisturized you should be able to make it look and feel softer, smoother and younger than ever. OCTOBER, 2011 41

BOOT-CAMP STYLE WORKOUTS

Boot camp-style workouts are effective for weight loss and toning, as they offer both cardiovascular and strength training benefits, provide a flexible work-out that prevents boredom from setting in and are rigorous enough to provide visible results in a short time.

A 30-MINUTE SERIOUS CARDIO BOOT-CAMP

Shoot the Hoop

Have plenty of water during and after this workout!

Shoot the hoop starts in a standing position with your arms by your sides and your knees slightly bent. You then jump straight up as high as you can and simultaneously reach your arms straight up above you. When you land, you should immediately crouch down and touch the floor. From the crouched position you should immediately spring into the next repetition. This exercise is repeated as many times as possible in a 30 or 60 second period.

WARM UP Basic March - Use this march for 2 minutes to warm up your body and to increase your core body temperature. Step-Touch Exercise - Step to the right with your right foot; bring your left foot and touch. Reverse. Take your left foot, step to the left and bring your right foot over and touch. It’s more a standing in place movement. Power Squats - Squat, with your bottom out to the rear and your legs apart. Then jump from the squatting position into the air, landing on the same squat position as before. If you are already in good form, hold dumbbells by your side. Heel Press - Pressing the heels gently into the floor, one by one. Stretch - Hamstrings, Calf and flat back stretch over. Wide Squat Tap - Going into a wide squat position and tapping toes alternately.

Walking Lunges Walking lunges elevate your heart rate and work the legs and core during your boot camp workout. Lunges build the muscles in the legs including the glutes, hamstrings, quads and calves and helps improve the body’s ability to run, jump and lift according, to American Fitness. They can be done outside or inside and require no equipment. Take a large step forward. Bend straight down, creating a right angle at the front knee as well as the back knee and lower the back knee toward the floor. Make sure the front knee is aligned with the ankle and not forward because this can put strain on the knee. Pause for a breath in the lunge, then step forward and bring the opposite leg into a lunge.

Side Kick To Plié The side kick to plié begins in a second position plié with your feet a little more than shoulder width apart, your legs turned out at the hips and your knees bent. When you are in the plié position, hold your hands up in front of your face with your elbows bent. Begin the workout by transferring your weight onto your right foot and placing your left foot next to your right, slightly shifting your hips to the right. Next, transfer your weight onto the left foot as you pick up the right foot, internally rotating it from the hip and kicking at hip height. As the right leg returns to the starting position, slide the left leg out and return to the original plié position. This movement should be repeated for 10 to 15 repetitions and then performed with the opposite leg.

Squat Thrusts A squat thrust is a series of movements performed in rapid succession. It’s a full-body integrated cardiovascular and strength-training exercise. Start in a standing position. Squat down, place your hands on the floor shoulderwidth apart and kick back to extend your legs behind you and place your body in plank position. Jump your knees back between your hands to a squat and jump up. As you land, crouch down into your next squat and repeat the sequence. As a modification, you can do one or more pushups when you are down in plank position. Perform squat thrusts according to directions from your boot camp instructor. Since squat thrusts are considered a cardiovascular activity, it’s common to do squat thrusts for a given time period, say one or two minutes in a boot camp workout. 42 OCTOBER, 2011

Classic Push Ups This longtime exercise standard starts down in a plank or push up position with your hands planted firmly on the floor, underneath your shoulders. When performing the exercise, you should inhale as you lower down and bend your shoulders out to a 90 degree angle; then you exhale as you extend your arms and return to a plank position. You should prevent your shoulders or hips from sinking down as you do the workout by engaging your core muscles and creating width between your shoulder blades. It’s recommended that you perform 10 to 15 repetitions of this exercise while maintaining correct form. This is one of the most natural ways to develop chest muscles. This exercise has to be performed with immense patience and concentration skills.

TULIP

WELLBEING

Burpees This exercise starts in a standing position. The sequence begins as you quickly crouch down into a ball with your hands on the floor below your shoulders. You then rapidly kick your legs out behind you into a plank or push up position. Just as quickly, you draw your legs back into a crouched position before jumping straight up into the air as high as you can. When you return to a standing position, you’ve completed one burpee. This sequence should be repeated as many times as you can in 30 or 60 seconds while maintaining correct form.

Supermans Supermans work the back, glutes, abs, shoulders and hamstrings, are performed from a face-down position on the floor. To begin, extend your arms in front of your head and move your legs together. Steadily lift your arms and legs at the same time and balance on your lower stomach. Hold for a second, lower yourself back down and repeat.

Science of Havan at Taj Krishna

n what may be called as a date with the divine, audience were left enthralled as students of Yogi Ashwini performed an authentic Vedic-style havan at the Taj Krishna. There was no smoke, no soot, the chants were vibrant, the atmosphere fragrant and serene and many reported Divine visitations. No, the hotel’s smoke alarm was working but did not ring, sounds strange, isn’t it? Well, it was not strange, but reminiscent of our rich Vedic heritage. ‘Just as human being feast on foods, havans are a means of nourishment for the devaloka. A real havan has the power to purify not just the envirenment but also each one witnessing it, ridding them of all the imblances - physical, emotional, financial and beyond’ said the mystical Yogi Ashwani, while explaning the vedic science of havans on his recent visit to Hyderabad to teach the Sanatan Kriya - Ashtanga Yoga as was given by sage Patanjali. Yogi Ashwani has authored many texts on Yoga, past-life and healing sciences, including the bestseller ‘Sanatan Kriya-51 Miracles and Haunting.’ The book is a must read for the non-believers as it comes with medical validations. Even the IMA has accepted the supernatural abilities of this yogi who is completely sanitised of commerce and charges nothing for his teachings. Rather he runs schools for street children and devotes most of his life in service and charity at the Dhyan Ashram.

As the master says, ‘we are all divine beings going through a human experience. All need an anchor to give us the experience and to make us aware of the divinity and hidden powers in us.’ So find your anchor and get your experience. Lest you waste this life as well. INTIMATE SOFAS

I N T E R I O R

As a piece of furniture, sofas are probably the number ones in the list. These versatile lounging pieces tend to offer more comfort and function to the entire room than a standard chair would! For this reason, there is much more in the area of time and space put into the purchase of a sofa than a person would, with the chairs they own. A sofa tends to be an extension of the person and most often one will find that, the people who sits on the sofa are the ones who made the purchase. While they are known to be rather stylish, sofas provide so much more in the way of function than the rest of the groupings. They are used for sleeping, particularly when a person is ill or maybe for curling up with a loved one to enjoy a television program... There are many different types of sofa sets available - classic, country, contemporary, ethnic, modern and many more. Also this piece of furniture comes in different colours and fabrics. The most popular fabrics are leather, suede, micro fibre and polyester giving the flexibility to match different kind of decors. A few important things to consider are the space, decor, colour and your budget.

T

hough sofas may seem to be the easiest things to buy, actually you may have to give consideration to many aspects of your house and future sofa usage while deciding on the best piece. Thus, take a good look around your house and think about the inhabitants of the house before moving towards a furniture store. You should measure your existing space where you want to introduce the furniture. Exact measurement is the key that can prove useful in the longer run. The existing colour and decor of the place are also equally important, if you are trying to match with existing furniture. This is not that important if you are planning from scratch and have an empty living room.

Y

ou will also have to buy a sofa that does not look incongruous in the decor of your house. A funky, pink coloured sofa will definitely not look good in a very formally decorated

living room. Similarly, a heavy Oak wood handcrafted sofa set will look awkward with modern living room furniture. Thus, keep the overall look in mind while purchasing the sofa. Also, give due importance to the colour of the sofa. A neutral colour like black, cream, brown or gray can look good anywhere. However a colour like bright orange might cry out for attention in an elegant room.

N

ext is the fabric of the sofa set. In most cases people keep their sofas in the living room and use it very often. For any family gathering or even simple reclining, the sofa is singled out for use. Moreover, if you have kids in your house, the sofa will be used perpetually. Thus, choosing white satin sofas in such cases will not be wise.

F

or sofas which will have to see umpteen accidents in the form of spilled drinks, mashed foods or rubbed soil, it is best to select fabrics that are dark in colour. Also, you could buy fabrics with busy prints so that the stains are not visible. You also need to consider the kind of comfort level you expect from your sofa. Sofas may be very firm or very fluffy. The back side could be tight or fitted with removable pillows.

ably. So, if you want more mind while deciding your piece.

Y

ou can make you living home an exception from others by selecting bold colour fabric for sofa. Not only do they stand out due to their not-socommon hues, but you will find a variety of shapes which you probably wouldn’t find anywhere else. These sofas can bring about an air opulence to any room and thanks to their unconventional looks, they can easily serve as a room focus. The only thing you need to be a bit careful about is ensuring that they don’t completely overpower your room.

F

unky sofa looks good in kids room, You can even go for unique sofa designs for you balcony and even for your bedroom. Just keep in mind that the decore of the room matches with your sofa selection. Colour, design, fabric, utility everything should be decided in advance to keep the miss match away.

IMRAN’S CRY OF SUCCESS Fresh from the success of Delhi Belly, his honeymoon and latest release Mere Brother Ki Dulhan Imran Khan is busy with other projects. TULIP spoke to the actor about the movie, his co-stars and also about his love for the three Khans! Imran, firstly heartiest congratulations on the success of MBKD, what kind of feedback have you been getting Thank you very much! Honestly the ultimate feedback for any actor is the response from the audience and the box office. This movie has really done a lot for me in the heartland of India. Places like U.P., Bihar, and Punjab etc have not really been big in terms of collections of my earlier movies but with this movie working so well in these areas, I am happy that my market is now expanding. That’s a very good sign (smiles).

The movie has some really funny moments, which one is your favourite scene For me it’s the entire post interval sequence when Katrina kidnaps me and I wake up in the middle of the highway. She thinks I am dead and starts crying and that’s when I wake up all dazed. If you notice carefully, she is sitting next to the sign post which says Marghatpur. Thought the whole sequence was hilarious.

So you fall for your brother’s fiancée in the film It is a sticky situation! What appealed to me is that these characters don’t run away, they try to find the best possible solution to this problem. In most of our films, one hero is left without a girl and I really feel bad for him. In other terms he’s called... well let that language remain just for Delhi Belly!

with both of them and I don’t care whatever is happening between both of them. It is none of my business.

A lot of rumours keep on coming out about you, how do you handle them You cannot pay attention to them, today someone will say something good about you, tomorrow someone will say bad about you.

What is your equation with Ranbir Kapoor? At times you are best of friends at times you are enemies We always have had a cool relationship, whenever we have time we hang out together, we hosted Filmfare twice and both the times we got in the best TRPs for the show. But to his credit, if he has to clear something that the press is saying he calls and clears it and so do I. I think if you go through layers like via people-via people then Chinese whispers happen and the true message gets changed.

But do you feel there is more pressure on you Today there is pressure on everyone, be it me or be it Aamir Khan. Everyone is sitting and watching if the other hero’s film is working or not. It is scary that such a responsibility has fallen into our laps.

Coming to your future projects, your next movie is Dharma Productions’ Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (EMAET) where you are paired opposite Kareena Kapoor, one of your favourite actresses. How has that experience been It’s been the best possible experience. I have always been a huge admirer of Kareena’s work. Working with Kareena, you get to see the sheer magic she creates on screen up, close and personal. When the camera rolls and the director says ‘Action’, she is electric. It is like a light bulb which has been switched on. You simply can’t take your eyes off her. And when the director says ‘Cut’, she is back to her normal self, chilled out, speaking on her phone or just hanging out on the sets. Off-screen, she is like any one of your friends. It’s simply incredible the way she switches on and off with such amazing ease. When you are doing a scene with someone like her, you can actually get lost in that moment. 48 OCTOBER, 2011

IF DIVORCE IS A NEGATION, WHO IS THE VICTIM?

ULIP TU LIP T

SPECIAL

By Shalini Jena

While a little girl, I once read an article about a socialite and a Fashion Designer who was divorced happily. I was strangely curious because, divorce in Hollywood was so tragic and was confused on how could something tragic, be happy? I asked my Mom details on this, so she just handed me over a newspaper. The length of the article was too long and I did not like to read such lengthy write-ups. So I furtively approached my Dad, who very sweetly read and explained the whole thing to me. It said that, the aforesaid woman mentioned had divorced her husband a few years back due to incompatibility issues but to that day, they were actually great friends and her children met him regularly, not only on the grounds of weekly schedule provided by the government, but anytime he wanted to. My dad peered at me from above his spectacles, the newspaper splayed open in front of him with a smile and pride on his face - his 10 year old daughter has started reading newspapers! When he asked me if I had liked the story, I said I didn’t. He asked me why, to whom I asked - ‘were her children boys or girls?’

A

decade later to that day, I understand the significance of my question. I understand that when parents are separated, somehow their children are divorced within them too. Most divorces are not happy, or is it what you think? But yes, peaceful separations usually have a less impact on children than the conflicted ones. But then when I talk about impact, what is that impact? When I was a ten year old and had read that article, I always wondered who would come to my rescue if Dad leaves me. Who will cook good food if Mom abandons me!

Whenever asked about children in divorced families, people talk of how harmful it is for children, their lives and eventually career, but I guess it is time to understand more imperative issues than just harmful effects. It is time to drink in the factors which rule the contribution to the growth, development and adaptation of a child with separated parent. There have been scientific studies on this topic and one of them was made by Amato and Keith who examined studies involving 13,000 children from preschool to young adulthood. This research in 1991 found out the overall result concluding that most of the children from divorced families have behavioral problems, in school, with parents, acquiring bad habits under peer pressure. They tend to develop negative self-concepts around them and have problems, complaints or live in distress with their parents. It is to be understood that the aforesaid survey did not give a word that children from intact families are better off than their counterparts from divorced families. It merely wants to state that as a group of children whose parents are separated, have more predicaments and issues to handle. To comprehend the situation and plight of a young OCTOBER, 2011 49

developing mind, the factors first have to be explored. To think of it like this, what exactly are the differences between children in divorced and intact families? When divorce papers are signed, it is a myth that children are divided with them (I said divided, not divorced). Somehow or the other, in many cases, they lose the grip of one of their parents. And the loss is unspeakable! It is like losing a hand, but slowly, everyday, in slow torture. Is it only emotion? In many cases, financially, the child is usually secured because parents can never ever fall out of love for their children, so they try to fill in equally. But when one of them gets married and has a whole another family who is depended on him/her, there comes the stress in financial conditions as well as relationships. But what we miss here, which is actually and mostly snubbed under the list of all the consequences is - knowledge. The knowledge of that one parent they lose. Skills, capabilities, exploration, ideas, views, intellect and knowledge of their forte, or what they lose. Let alone skills, simple acquirements matter! For instance, in one of the episodes of How I Met Your Mother, when Barney finally meets his father and in retribution to eke out all the years of fatherliness, he tries breaking the basketball hoop in the man’s house and realizes that he couldn’t take it out because he had never learnt how to use a screw-driver.

When I was in my high school, my classmates had performed an art wherein my friend was playing the role of a beautiful girl with auburn hair cascading below her waist with a spotless visage added to her beauty. And another friend was posed as a simple, clairvoyant girl with plaited, oiled hair and pockmarked skin. Skipping the intro and first impressions, in the plot, the beautiful girl reveals how unhappy and precarious her life was with her parents divorced and family unstable. While the simply unpopular girl, who was satisfied and happy with a well-being family, comes to her aid, teaches her how to live a better life. But that is another story. Well, the point is that in those days, we talked about how predictable the idea was and were probably fooling when the play was on; only viewers who could relate watched it with apt attention. Now we realize why! According to a survey, the amount of contact between the non-residential father and their children is not the determining factor; it is the quality of the father-child relationship that matters. There is a growing body of evidence illustrating, how non-residential fathers affect their children. First, when a non-residential father has frequent contact and there is minimal conflict, children are faring better. In a study that looked at results across a broad range of factors, Amato and Gilbreth (1999) found that when fathers helped with homework, set appropriate limits and expectations and demonstrated warmth, children fared better. In other words, good parenting by noncustodial parents matters. In short, children benefit from continued relationships with non-residential parents. There are myriad references and research evidences which indicate parenting skills and types of relationships between individual parent and child influence the nature, stages and understanding for the child’s well-being. In Hollywood movies, there are stories which relate to children of divorced parents either drop out of school or get pregnant during their teens or are greatly ironed under peer pressure. There are multiple reasons for the same and they vary with situations. For instance, when a child reaches the complexity of a teen; mind sets, views, attitude and ideas develop and it is then that they most need the guided guidance of the parents. Guided is used because parents themselves have to learn the art of understanding and level-heading with them. But since 50 OCTOBER, 2011

SPECIAL a family that is separated has all the responsibilities on a single parent, emotional and physical absence increases, leaving the child confused, leading to all the escape routes, definition of happiness, pleasure, right and wrong changes. This is quite obvious! Sometimes, a relationship outside family of the single parent can worsen the condition; especially when the child is in her/his developmental stage. Divorced is not same as abandoned, is it? In a divorce, the child has both the parents; they are just separated by incompatibility. They are people who understood that they have a life which is better outside the marriage. True! But it is equally important to consider what they are keeping closer and what they are leaving behind. A child is a guiltless and the most pure form of innocence. When a couple decide to have a family, it is no more just about to be or to be not with each other. A child has every right to live a life which is bestowed upon by both the parents. Separated couples should definitely learn parental skills and make sure that the child does not feel neglected by any one of them. In the incubation period of conflict which eventually leads to divorce, there is usually a lot of commotion, misunderstandings, shouting, sometimes even abusing. A child witnessing such ruckus is the worst what parents can do. When born, a child does not only require their support and love but also needs to see, feel and step into the understanding of love that they, as parents and couple have for each other and if they cannot afford to do that, they must let the child know from an early stage that, even if they have gone separate ways, he or she will not be affected by the distance. Boys undergo a development in their childhood; it is called the Oedipus complex, during which they acquire a deeper connection towards their mothers. This bond is actually the first step wherein the most formidable bond in this world is recrudesced. At the same time there is fear, a fear that pulls them a little away from the deep emotions for their mothers. Similarly, in their childhood days, girls develop something called the Electra complex. This is just the other way round for the aforesaid and refers to their bonding towards their fathers more. They like the strength their fathers possess and want to be with them, because they know they are safe in their hands. A bond of a girl with her mother grows more during adolescence, when they need to be understood more than, to be taken care of. I hope we now understand how much a child needs the emotional, financial and social help and physical presence of both the parents and that too, equally. While planting a seed, we water it with great care. When it springs up, we nurture it with manure and when it is fully grown, we look at the beauty of our creation and an unexplainable happiness builds within us. Just like a plant needs water, sunlight and manure for its growth in our compound, a child needs care, love, presence and sagacity of both the parents.

ON PREVAILING

DIVINITY OVER DEMONISM Treatises about how Indians observe Dussehra…

Goddess Durga – All the deities have created Her only for one purpose – to annihilate

Mahishasura, demon with infernal powers and who can change his form into both buffalo and human. He invaded Heavens, defeating the Indra also. The Gods then went into conclave to decide what could be done with this invincible monster. Since he was invincible to people on earth, they created his nemesis in the form of a young woman Durga (a Goddess with eight arms, riding a lion, carrying weapons, a lotus flower and maintaining a meditative smile). She combined the powers of all the deities in a beautiful form. She created an army to fight against the forces of this demon-king Mahishasura, who was terrorizing Heaven and Earth. After nine days of battle, during which Mahishasura’s army was decimated, she finally killed him on the tenth day of the waxing moon. Durga is therefore called Mahishasuramardini (which literally means - the slayer of the buffalo demon). She was beautiful, yet to powerful! People offer prayers to massive statues of Goddess Durga with utter belief and felicity. The event is celebrated in various versions in all parts of India. This festival is more important for women, as they involve in fasting for nine consecutive days for their respective husbands and welfare of their families and break their fasts on the tenth day. Dandiya Raas holds an important place in navratri celebrations. This dance is dedicated in the honour of Goddess Durga, beyond celebrating togetherness and sharing happiness with families and friends. She destroys obstacles, wards off ill-health, cleanses the sins and eliminates fear. The symbol of the Goddess depicts mental strength, prosperity and spiritual wealth. It not only heightens devotion towards Goddess but also bonds the societies. The special characteristic of the dance is the colorful costume worn by the dancers and the colorful sticks carried by them. Both men and women love to be seen dressed in their best traditional attires.

We pray to someone we did not even see with our eyes in real. We hear stories said by our elders at home, with sheer ardour, concentration and eyes wide open. And we end up believing it all soon after! What drives us to seek God’s favour during bad times or perhaps more during festivals? What did it take from an Almighty in the form of Ram, eldest son to the valorous king Dashrath; who was ordered to abandon his own kingdom with Goddess wife Sita and brother Lakshman, to stay in woods and groves for fourteen years with minimal requirements, living on mere fruits to satiate hungers? People offer prayers with an intense belief that Almighty can create miracles. Besides, we believe that every Goddess or God possess the power to predict the future and visualize what would happen in time to come. Since Ram is a deity himself (but in the form of an ordinary looking man, during his stay in the forests), why didn’t He predict all those ill incidents which happened to Himself, His family and to His kingdom, during this epic? Or did He? (But only wanted to evangelize people a moral that decisively, though much delayed, good always wins over evil, no matter what). I am sure many around have got this doubt. Well, no ancient scripture or epic has all the principles and prophesies accepted by modern world. While many of them are abided with thick belief, a few are disavowed. However, hope persists in good! Hope is the element, which inspires us to attain success and win any war with any evil. It was strong hope which Lord Ram, his brother Lakshman, Lord Hanuman and their army had, to annihilate the demon Ravan in a battle which lasted for ten days and Vibheeshan was given the responsibility to rule Lanka ever after. Since then, the day of Vijaya Dashmi is considered auspicious by Indians. Today, all which is good in mankind is concentrated in the deeds of Lord Ram.

Chef Venkat Naidu, Executive Sous Chef at Hyderabad Marriott Hotel and Convention Centre, shares with the readers of Tulip, a traditional festive dish of Pongadalu. Ingredients – Rice Flour – 1 kg., Jaggery – 750 gms., Rice Water – 4 cups, Oil for deep fry. When the rice water starts boiling, add jaggery to it, stir continuously and cook on slow flame till it turns into thick syrup. Now add rice flour to it and make a thick smooth batter. (Stir continuously while adding rice flour to avoid lumps). Heat oil in a deep bottomed wok, take a table spoon full of batter and gently drop it into the oil. Deep fry the Pongadalu in slow flame. FESTIVITY OF

By Aditya Tej

There is no better affair in the Indian calendar, which gives more ecstasy and bliss than the festival of DIWALI does. ‘Oh, what a great Dussehra we had again this year. But hey, Diwali is right up next and is not too far away from today’ - is what we feel, as the excitement starts mounting. It’s almost like a countdown after Dussehra! It’s a fact that these two festivals are actually connected, having a few stories and beliefs in common. Ever thought what is it about this festival, which makes us feel so exited within? Well, people celebrate Diwali for many other reasons. We call / mail / message our dear ones who are away from us and wish them with great pleasure and happiness…

D

iwali also marks the end of a legend demon, Narakasur on the hands of Lord Krishna. It is said that Lord Krishna had an oil bath to rid of himself from the blood which spattered on his body when Narakasur was killed. The tradition is followed and people offer prayers on the previous day of the Naraka Chaturdashi to the vessel in which water is being heated for having bath. People light fireworks, which are considered as the effigies of Narakasura. Diwali, in a true sense, is the festival of unity in diversity. It is as exciting as celebrating New Year! It actually is considered as a new beginning because (like I mentioned above that it is closely connected to Dussehra, - it marks the arrival of Lord Ram to Ayodhya with his brother Lakshman and Goddess wife Sita and taking over his kingdom for good, after a fourteen year exile. As the citizens of Ayodhya eagerly awaited their return, they lit thousands of lamps all across the city. The darkest night of the year gave way to a glorious morning as they returned home. It also marks the onset of good occurrences in one’s life. Many myths, legends, incidents and rituals, but nationwide celebrations! It is one such day in the whole year, when the children volunteer to leave their homes, way too earlier to burst crackers. It is also a popular belief that the fireworks which add magnificence to the

festival, actually reduces the evil to ashes. The traditional oil bath just before sunrise is the only chore that stands between them and the pre-dawn adventures. Lots of sweets and desserts along with homemade delicacies are relished and people shop a lot during this festival. Every home is enlightened with clay lamps all over, which signifies the presence of divine brightness and light in the lives of people in their homes. It is also a celebration of illuminating one’s own soul with the light of hope and positive energy. The way of celebrating Diwali transformed over a period of time. It brings people together! Among today’s generation, this festival is associated with giving away gifts (in the form of chocolates sometimes) and greeting cards. The first day of the five day festival of Diwali, Dhanteras is well identified and is a ritual well followed, across India. This also marks the beginning of Diwali celebrations. The Owl form of Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped to attain prosperity and wellbeing. We pray for good health and wealth for our families. It is advised to purchase gold or silver for ourselves or for just home and is believed to bring good luck in the form of wealth. Lighting of lamps at homes is a way of paying obeisance to god for attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace and fame. OCTOBER, 2011 53

SOUTH INDIAN CUSTOM The custom of celebrating Diwali in South India is unique. People wake up before sunrise prepare blood by mixing Kumkum in oil and after breaking a bitter fruit that represents the head of the demon King that was smashed by Krishna, apply that mixture on their foreheads. Then they have an oil bath using sandalwood paste. The Jains celebrate this day in the honour of attaining ‘Nirvana’ (or Eternal Bliss) of Lord Mahavira. The Sikhs celebrate Diwali to celebrate the release of the sixth Guru Hargobind Sahib. For them, Diwali means worshipping the religious freedom of Sikhs. Rangolis are done to decorate the houses to capture the festive mood. People spend a lot of money on fireworks. According to one belief, the sound of fire-crackers is an indication of the joy of the people living on earth, making the gods aware of their plentiful state. The fumes produced by the crackers kill a lot of insects too!

THE TRADITION OF FIREWORKS Acclaimed as the festival of lights, Diwali is associated with sweets and liveliness as well. As it is celebrated on the new-moon (Amavasya) night, lights and fireworks have a significant role to play in this festival. This is why, when we hear the name Diwali, the first impression that flashes through our minds is the multicolored, impressive fireworks sprinkling various sorts of bright colored lights in the night sky. Although the tradition of fireworks on Diwali is not very old, still they have succeeded in becoming ‘Diwali is the most awaiting festival for me, my family and friends. We enjoy decorating house, doing puja, distributing sweets and gifts till the evening. Lighting lamps is the best part! The fun and cherishing moments start in the night from 9 onwards as my close friends and cousins come to my home and we all start bursting sky shooters and flower pots. But as there is a threat to global warming we started cutting down on crackers. Still Diwali is most important as it’s the liveliest festival among all’

such a vital part of this festival that we can’t even imagine a wonderful Diwali without them.

THE TRADITION OF PLAYING CARDS Playing cards is one of the oldest traditions of Diwali. According to the legends, Goddess Parvati was playing dice with her spouse Lord Shiva on this day. She enjoyed herself so much that she said that whoever would gamble on Diwali night, would remain prosperous throughout the year. These days, playing with dice has been replaced by cards. However, many people put a limit to the stakes that can be played.

THE TRADITION OF EXCHANGING GIFTS AND SWEETS Exchange of gifts and sweets is a good old tradition of Diwali. The festival is a golden opportunity for the people to revive their personal relationships and social ties, through the exchange of gifts and sweets. During the festive season, almost all the kitchens of the Indian household are filled with the enticing aroma of sweets, which are prepared to exchange with the acquaintances. Exchange of attractive gifts is a way to strengthen the bond of the relationships. The 5th day or the last day of this festival is called Bhai Duj. On this day, sisters invite their brothers and their family to their homes and treat them with delicacies. In turn, brothers offer them with gifts and sweets. ‘Diwali! We wait for this festival eagerly. It’s all about lights and brightness around, all across the nation. Also, according to me it is more about the Durga puja than bursting crackers and bombs’

Padma Reddy

‘I celebrate all the festivals. I’ve a lot of friends who invite me for dinner and make me eat lots of sweets. We play cards till late in the night and enjoy a lot with friends’

Sirisha Mulpuru ‘We are indeed privileged to be born as Indians with so many festivals to celebrate. Out diverse cultures ensures that boredom never enters our lives. It’s the festival of lights and sweets, bringing people together. With the onset of October, begins the mood and spirit of the festive season of Diwali, whishing each other with loads of happiness’

Sarita Lohiya 54 OCTOBER, 2011

Shazia Bakal Shariff

‘It’s the festival of prosperity. The whole India celebrates like a New Year. It’s like the beginning of a new era altogether. We share joy and happiness with friends and even with the society around’

My five all time favourite dishes are – Baigan Bharta, Karda do Pyaza, Dal Tadka, Natu Kodi and Galouti Kebab. But while at home, I prefer simple, yet healthy food like Parathas. My Mom is a great cook and she has been the greatest source of motivation for me, all through. I owe my success to her!

Achievements – 1) A written letter of appreciation from Rajeev Chaudhry, a great chef and a mentor! I still have it safe with me. 2) Recommendation by the Michelin Guide, the oldest and the best known European restaurant and hotel guide, which awards Michelin Stars. 3) I opened a restaurant, with the name – 360. LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!

by Aditya Tej

There is no long distance in love. It always finds a way to bring hearts together no matter how many miles there are between them. Shazia Bakal Shariff with her beloved husband, Naushad Shariff talks to Tulip and explains this how…

Shazia – I was born in the northern city of natural beauty – Srinagar in Kashmir. I am a graduate in Information Technology and Management. Mr. AR Bakal and Nasreen Bakal are my parents. I have two sisters – Nevida, settled in America with her family and the youngest one – Hafsa, is in her schooling days now. We own renowned star hotels – an active business in Srinagar and the elder members of my family are taking care of it. The other half of my family lives in USA (Los Angeles and San Francisco). I had spent quite some time at these places too. But for the last six years, I am living in Hyderabad. It’s strange the way Hyderabad happened to me. My husband Naushad saw me and liked me instantly and spoke to my cousins in USA, about his wish to get married to me. My family in states liked him and they told me about him. Naushad is from Chennai and is from an IT background (Engineer). At 21, soon after my graduation, I got married in year 2003 and we shifted to San Francisco where my husband’s family lives. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I will get married to someone from south India. Perhaps, it was in my destiny that I have to get married to him. In 2005, we came to Hyderabad and this was the first place for me to visit in south India. One can learn and imbibe a lot from marriages. I made some good friends in Hyderabad. The people here are very warm and friendly. The Haleem we get here is something which one doesn’t find elsewhere. I like this place a lot! I did my studies in Delhi and it was real fun! During my four year stay there, I made lots of friends, studied, partied and did modeling for some time. And also won the title Miss Glamorous in Year 2000, which will always remain memorable! and more crowded. But there is nothing like settling in this small, cute city of Hyderabad! During my schooling days, I used to participate a lot in debates, was a good dancer and a basketball player too, representing national level, when I was in 12th standard.

My Family - My mom got married at very young age (when she was just 16). I am a proud daughter of my parents. As I am the eldest daughter of my family, I was more pampered and they treated me more like a son! They gave me freedom to do things which I loved to. My Mom is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Though a bit sensitive yet so strong! I love cooking and I have learned it from my mother and I find her an amazing cook. My mother taught me good values, how to live life and take care of the family after marriage, by being a good wife, a good mother and an allrounder. She is my role model and one day I want to be like her. I love my dad so much and haven’t met any person like him in my life. He is very sophisticated and always ready to help people and doesn’t expect much in return. I lived my childhood like a princess and my dad advised me always to be bold and brave. I was in my standard eight, when my father insisted that I should learn to drive a car. I still remember my dad told me if I pass my 10 class with good numbers, he will gift me a car and that’s what he did. He always encouraged me to do things I always wanted to. Therefore, I am grateful to my parents in many ways. I have a beautiful daughter - Sarah. She is an apple of my eye, my weakness and my strength also! My life changed a lot after giving birth to her. If God had blessed me with anything, then it would be Sarah. Whenever I am upset, I just look at her and I smile. Though she is just four years, she helps me in doing things at home. I would be happy if I have another child. Being a mother is the most beautiful gift by God. Naushad – I was born and did my education (Electronics and Communications) in Vellore, Chennai. My family lives in America (Mom, elder brother and a sister). I am a bit reserved! Life before marriage was totally different. I was free like a bird with an unorganized lifestyle and a devil may care attitude. After college, I joined Indian Air Force and worked there for six years as an Aeronautical Engineer. The path to becoming an Aerospace Engineer is a rigorous one. The job involved a combination of problem solving, routine scientific work, travelling to airfields, maintenance shops and creativity in solving problems, which were common within the industry. After working in Indian Air Force for six years, I shifted my base to America (SFO). Life in America was hectic and monotonous. Though I travelled to almost all the states in America I was missing my country. After some time, I planned to get married and my mother introduced me to a lot of girls, but when I met Shazia, I thought she is the one and only. First time when I met her with her cousin and her father, she looked very beautiful and charming and for me it was love at first sight. I remember second time I met her at Ansal Plaza in Delhi, I gifted her chocolates and red roses and she was really impressed. We discussed each other’s likes and dislikes. Those memories are still afresh! Being a south Indian I never thought my life partner will be from Kashmir. When I went to Kashmir for the first time on my engageOCTOBER, 2011 57

KINSHIP ment, I loved the Kashmiri culture and tradition. The people are really good at preserving their heritage. My marriage to Shazia was the best thing that happened to me in my life. Being married is a wonderful feeling and it changed my life to better. So the bonding between each other has been incredible and I want to thank God for bringing Shazia into my life. She is a bit impulsive, she gets what she wants. Whatever comes in her mind, she does it. A bit short-tempered at times, but on the other hand, she is adorable, very understanding and has a positive attitude towards life. She likes to experiment with cooking and is very good at that. Now that we are a family, we eat Kashmiri, Mughlai and South Indian at home. I make good sea-food at home, sometimes. Shazia – Our first trip after marriage was to Malaysia, in 2003. We did a lot of shopping there. One of the best things was, reaching the top of Petronas Twin Towers and we got to see an amazing view of things around. We had spent good time together and that’s when a deeper bond developed for each other. But in India, Pahalgam and Gulmarg in Kashmir were the places we had visited together after marriage. Naushad – Both these places are equally beautiful, but I loved Gulmarg more for its lush greenery. It was also low-polluted and very picturesque with snow capped mountains. Pahalgam was more like a large meadow. And of course, in America also, we had been to San Francisco and visited places like – Golden Gate and Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf which were so beautiful with natural surroundings. MAKE GEL CANDLES

TULIP

KINSHIP

Do you love burning beautiful, scented candles? And do you know that you can easily make them yourself? It is exciting and not at all difficult. Here are 12 easy steps to creating unique candles that you can burn at home, give as gifts or even sell. MATERIALS FOR GEL CANDLE MAKING You will need Gel Zinc wicks (do not use cotton wicks because they absorb too much gel) Essential oil for fragrance Liquid color dye Glass (wine glass or any other) Embeds (use anything non-flammable - colored aquarium gravel, marbles, glitter, sand, sea shells, crystals, polished stones or pearls.)

STEPS TO MAKING A GEL CANDLE 1. Place a little bit of hot glue in the center of the container bottom. Stick the wick in it and let the glue set. 2. Cut the gel into small pieces so it melts faster and more evenly. Melt it in a stainless steel pot over a medium heat. 3. The trickiest part is the temperature - you should get it to exactly 200°F, because overheated gel loses its clarity. For that, you will need a suitable thermometer. 4. Maintain the temperature at 200°; all the gel should melt and become smooth, like syrup. 5. Add color dye to the melted gel, a little bit at a time, until you get the desired color - remember, you can always add more dye to make the color stronger, but you can not take dye away. For a candle with embedded objects, you should use only a little color, so the objects remain visible 6. Add the fragrance - 1/3 teaspoon for each glass of melted gel will give it a nice scent. For a stronger scent, add a bit more fragrance. 7. Heat the container in the oven or microwave to about 150-160°F. This will help to reduce the appearance of bubbles. 8. If you want to use embeds, dip them in hot gel first and then arrange them in the container as you like. It is better to keep the objects closer to the sides of the container - they will be easier to see, this way. 9. Now it is time to pour your gel into the container. Place your container on a level surface and pour the gel slowly and carefully down the side. If it is your first time, you will probably get a few bubbles; to avoid that, the gel should be still very hot. 10. Pull the wick up. Roll it on a pencil to keep it straight. 11. Let the candle cool. Trim the wick and you are done! You have a beautiful, unique gel candle, made by yourself.

FULL THROTTLE! Machines a la mode...

MERCEDES BENZ SLK55 AMG

M

ercedes-Benz’s AMG performance arm has worked its magic on the automaker’s latest SLK, itself is a more performance-minded drop top, than its predecessors. Dubbed the SLK55 AMG, the new car boasts a 5.5-liter V8 that cranks out 415 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 398 lb-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm, good enough to help the little drop top scoot to 60 mph in a mere 4.5 seconds before topping out at an electronically limited 155 mph. The M152 5.5-liter V8 is a new naturallyaspirated version of the M157 5.5-liter bi-turbo used in larger AMG products like the E63 AMG, CLS63 AMG and S63 AMG. Like its big brother, it features a start/stop system to save fuel. It features an ultra high-pressure direct injection system capable of injecting fuel at 2,900 psi. The new M152 version of the V8 also features cylinder management that cuts off half the cylinders – two, three, five and eight – between 800 and 3,800 rpm if the driver has selected the controlled efficiency mode on the car’s automatic transmission. The cylinder shutoff is said to be transparent and still offers plenty of power to keep the car moving unless the driver calls for more power with the skinny pedal. AMG’s speed shift plus seven-speed automatic is standard and it includes both paddles and a touch-shift mode. Larger 14.2 inch front and 13 inch rear disc brakes are standard, as is a special exhaust system. While the suspension has been tuned for more performance-oriented driving, those who plan to make the most out of their SLK55s will want to select the optional AMG handling package for its stiffer tuning, rear differential lock, two-piece front disc brakes and leather/Alcantara-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel. The SLK55 will stand out from other SLKs with a unique body kit and a special badge. Taking even more cues from the range-topping SLS AMG than the standard SLK does, the AMG features extra vents and louvers for added cooling. Xenon headlamps will be optional, although all models get LED running lamps. Inside, the car gets its own IWC-badged AMG clock, a performance steering wheel, aluminum trim pieces and sports seats with standard air scarf neck heating for chilly top-down motoring. The car is the perfect embodiment of the new AMG brand claim of driving performance - in the compact high-performance roadster segment there is nothing to compare to its combination of tangible driving dynamics, superior sportiness, unique high-technology and low fuel consumption. The SLK55 AMG accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). 60 OCTOBER, 2011

FERRARI 458 - SPIDER

T

TULIP

AUTOMOBILES

he 458 Spider, as it is called, is the first-ever mid-engine supercar with a retractable hardtop. As the convertible version of the 458 Italia, it is the successor to the F430 Spider. Unlike F430 Spider, the 458 Spider has a folding aluminum hardtop. Although more attractive than the a cloth roof, the more complex mechanics operating the hard cover means that the 4.5-liter direct-injected V8 is now hidden instead of displayed. But that’s a minor sacrifice for more air in the cabin. While the 458 Spider has the same engine and power train as the coupe - 670HP 4.5-liter V8 with a dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift transmission and Ferrari’s E-Diff - Ferrari’s engineers recalibrated certain features such as its accelerator pedal mapping, the multilink suspension and the exhaust to improve driving feel with the top down. The rear of the car is characterized by innovative forms with the buttresses designed to optimize the flow of air to the engine intakes and the clutch and gearbox oil radiators. For maximum comfort whilst driving top down, the 458 Spider features a generously-sized adjustable electric wind stop. The design was perfected to slow and diffuse the air in the cockpit, enabling normal conversation to be held even at speeds over 200 km/h. New technical solutions adopted for the chassis guarantee identical levels of structural rigidity with the roof up or down. The result is a car that is truly exciting to drive, blending extreme performance with the responsiveness that has always characterized Ferrari’s open-top berlinettas. Certain of the car’s features, such as its accelerator pedal mapping and the damping of the multilink suspension, have been calibrated to guarantee maximum sportiness and absolute driving pleasure with the top down, in line with Maranello’s exclusive spider tradition. Even the engine soundtrack has been honed to ensure that the car’s occupants are completely captivated by the drop-top driving experience. The 458 Spider is powered by Ferrari’s naturallyaspirated, direct-injection 4.5 litre V8 which was nominated as the 2011 International Engine of the Year, for its engineering excellence in terms of drivability, performance, economy and refinement. The power is transferred to the road by Ferrari’s class-leading dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift transmission through the sophisticated E-Diff, itself integrated with the F1-Trac traction control and high-performance ABS for maximum handling dynamics. Specifications : Dimensions and Weight – length - 4257 mm (178.2 in), width – 1937 mm (76.3 in), height – 1213 mm (47.8 in), wheelbase – 2650 mm (104.3 in), dry weight – 1380 kg (3042 lbs), weight distribution fr/r – 42% / 58%. ake way for the touchbook - Acer’s new dual touch screen laptop. The device has two touch screens and no physical keyboard whatsoever. In fact, apart from the power button and the display keyboard button, there are no physical buttons on the device. Put simply, the device looks like two 14-inch tablets glued together on a hinge. Both the displays have a resolution of 1366x768. The upper display is a standard touch screen where as the lower display has gorilla glass making it scratch resistant. The bottom touch screen, however, is an entirely different story. Its response is fabulous, much better than expected. A nifty feature - put all 10 fingers on the display to launch the keyboard, put 5 fingers on the display to launch the Acer ring. Typing on the keyboard takes some getting used to. The keys are well spaced out and one can get an audio feedback for every key pressed, but the experience isn’t the same as a regular keyboard. Gesture Editor is a cool feature. One can customize and assign specific gestures to launch certain programs or applications. For instance, one swipe of the finger and the browser pops up or draw the symbol D to show the desktop. You also have certain essential options such as screen brightness, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, screen saver, hibernate, sleep, shut down, etc. on one click of the Acer ring. Although this feature isn’t a game changer, the availability of the option is nice. Specifications - Windows 7 home premium 64-bit OS, Intel core i5-480m 2.67 GHz processor, dual 14-ich Acer CineCrystal display with a resolution of 1366x768, bluetooth 3.0, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and 4GB DDR3 RAM.

BOWERS & WILKINS - ZEPPELIN AIR

T

he simplest way to describe the product would be to compare it to an abnormally elongated egg. The same holds true for the Zeppelin Air. The original chrome finish at the rear has been replaced by a more classy glossy black plastic finish. All ports are housed in the rear. As always, the dock connector is in the front. In keeping with the design of the dock, B&W also provides an egg-shaped remote control which looks cute. Build quality is exemplary even by B&W standards, with the Zeppelin being constructed of a mesh like fabric and having a rock sold plastic covering in the rear. The Zeppelin Air is a modern B&W marvel - it incorporates the best sonic technologies developed by the company in their iconic nautilus line of speakers and combines them with mid-range drivers and tweeters used in their award winning MM-1 desktop speakers. The most impressive thing about Airplay has to be the potential for wireless playback, which is extremely convenient and it even works with other iOS based hardware. The DSP sound processing found in the MM-1 converts to superior sound quality, if one bypasses the PC sound card and takes the sound output directly through USB. It accommodates iPods and iPhones of differing depth through a spring loaded docking port that flexes to accommodate each model. Zeppelin Air’s dock connector works with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone, iPod touch. Syncing contacts, apps, bookmarks, calendars and playlists couldn’t be easier. We live in the times of evolving technologies which is influencing how brands communicate with their customers. Digital Signage Medium, an out of home advertising medium that was struggling to create an identity, is now gaining acceptance after being powered by an innovative technology platform – Kiosk Mint. Digital Signage powered by online technology, is gaining acceptance among retailers and brands as a powerful medium of internal branding, point of sale promotion and advertising. An Online Digital Signage Network with LCD / LED displays showcasing moving digital content are eye catching and are an excellent medium of branding and promotion, without causing any annoyance to the patrons at a public location (no distracting sounds) and most importantly they bring aesthetic value to the ambiance of the premises. Digital Signage is about Brand Recall – to register a brand in the minds of people. Its USP is its ability to reach out to audience when they are shopping. When powered by a technology platform such as Kiosk Mint, Digital Signage can present businesses an opportunity to capitalize on the footfall at a public location. The advertiser is billed for the ad, only when the screen is live and playing that particular ad. The platform has three components - Web based user interface for content / screen management, Servers which store the content and Player software that is installed on the LCD /LED unit. Kiosk Mint’s website www. kioskmint.com accessible on the internet acts as a centralized user interface that can be conveniently used for the complete management of the signage network. Each user (Advertiser, Premises Owner, Enterprise owning a private network, etc) is given a unique login that gives them access to their respective online interfaces. The content management, screen management, billing, real-time ad impression reporting and tracking systems are completely online and are accessible through the website. Along with its innovative technology platform, Kiosk Mint also provides an excellent mix of knowledge and expertise on digital signage networking, infrastructure and quality deployment. Kiosk Mint’s online digital signage platform is deployed at Prasads IMAX, Mebaz Fashion Stores, Beam Fiber offices, Kalamandir Stores and even inside GMR Aaeroexpress buses apart from other locations. Aesthetically installed digital signages, at strategic locations, powered by technology are changing the way companies communicate and influence their internal and external audience. Kiosk Mint’s Digital Signage Technology Platform presents unparalleled opportunities to companies to capture the audiences’ attention, educate and inform customers and to build brands.

SUCCESS STORY

IN OUR SUCCESS STORY WE HAVE KALAMANDIR KALYAN THE C.E.O OF KALAMANDIR. HE TALKS TO TULIP ABOUT HIS JOURNEY, REASON BEHIND HIS SUCCESS, HIS FUTURE PLAN AND HIS MOTTO IN LIFE. HOW AND WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS In early 2005, a young Telugu business school graduate wanted to put Andhra Pradesh – a state known for its rich textile tapestry with Pochampalli, Gadwal, Mangalagiri and Uppada on the textile map of India. His dream turned into a vision and transformed into action in the form of Kalamandir. Chalavadi Naga Kanaka Durga Prasad - Chairman and Managing Director of Kalamandir, is the young man who realized his dream of a world-class sari mall through Kalamandir. The company started as a retailer of saris in Hyderabad in August 2005 at a very modest scale with a retail outlet of 2000 square feet. In 2005, the store hired a retail space in Ameerpet in Hyderabad and displayed exclusive traditional sarees like silk, handlooms and fancy saris at quality that Hyderabad had never seen and at prices that Hyderabad could never believe.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE HYDERABAD - AND HOW THE CITY IS NOW, IN TERMS OF FASHION AND STYLE Hyderabad city is growing in leaps and bounds seemed like the best business step we could take. It was a good decision. Today, we have four branches in Hyderabad – Ameerpet, Disukhnagar, Kukatpally and Patny center. We also have branches in Vijayawada, Guntur and Benguluru.

HOW EASY WAS IT FOR YOU TO REACH THE PLACE WHERE YOU STAND TODAY -

Each one of us at Kalamandir treats the brand as their own. We work together and enjoy the fruits of success together.

THE BUSINESS JOURNEY TEACHES AND CHANGES EVERYONE. SO HOW DO YOU THINK IT HAS CHANGED YOU It has changed us for the better. Today, we are more positive than ever before. Despite the talk about recession and economy slowing down, Kalamandir has stuck to its guns and proved a success. Our belief that good business will always lead to success has reiterated our believes in core values of life.

HOW DO YOU LOOK AT YOUR FUTURE The wish list comprises more showrooms, more expansion to other cities, better quality and more variety.

AN OPEN SECRET AND A TOP SECRET ABOUT YOU Kalamandir is the number one - that is an open secret. We tasted success not because of some good time, good karma or good vastu, but because of good work. That is the top secret!

YOUR PASS TIME ACTIVITIES Corporate social responsibility. Both personally and professionally, I am involved with causes such as girl child, enviGOOD KARMA ronment and fight against drugs and corruption.

NOT GOOD TIME, OR GOOD VASTU, BUT GOOD WORK IS THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

We have opened eleven branches in six years. The numbers should speak for themselves. At Kalamandir, we work with passion and therefore, it never felt like work. It was all in the game! We had to take some tough decisions when it came to retaining quality and those decisions have paid off.

YOUR TAKE ON YOUR SUCCESS The good old fashioned values of hard work, honesty and quality will always lead you to the destination called success.

THE THING WHICH KEPT YOU GOING THROUGH THE STRUGGLE The belief that good values will always help one succeed. In the beginning it may seem like it is a tough road and you may be even tempted to take the easy way out. But we stuck to our core values of quality, honesty and affordability and that is what contributed to our success.

DESCRIBE YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR Eventful and with milestones which brought smiles on our faces. We never really intended to compete with anyone or garner numbers and branches. Our only aim was to have a garment showroom which will attract customers – regardless of ads, discounts, sales etc. Kalamandir is today a brand that is associated with clients who want quality and variety.

YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS AS A SUPPORT -

Our clients who have been able to appreciate our products and our services. Without them, we are nothing! Of course, God has always been with us.

ANY SUCH INCIDENT, WHICH HAS AFFECTED YOU THE MOST? We have always been associated with right cause and that makes us feel very proud. Anti-drug campagian surely made a difference in the society, but of course due to some miscommunication, things were portrayed a bit differently in the media. we are now coming up with Miss Hyderabad. we want young girl to come ahead and make a place for themselves at national and international level we are just trying to give them the right platform.
