Confession-O-Mania!!

If you haven’t done it, then you haven’t had your share of fun, idiocy and not to forget fights and melodrama. Confession pages have become a rage in every college, school and even some of the companies. Girls admitting their crushes, guys complementing the girls, students talking about their college and faculty. And a lot of drama where people come forward talking about their dislike about a person, a situation or just hitting the rock bottom by disclosing secrets and shocking everyone. Follow Your

DREAM

It is said that “A dream is not something that you see while sleeping, a dream is something that does not let you sleep”. Dreams leave you restless until you achieve them. They make you want to go and get what you really need from life; they instill the energy, confidence and constantly motivate you to live your life the way you picture it. People give up their super successful careers to live their dreams. Because they know that a successful career will fetch everything, money, status, respect and a luxurious lifestyle. But only a dream career will do, what’s most needed in life; keep you happy and satisfied. Everyone wants to lead a happy life, and everyone has a dream. Komal Sirwani, provides a simple solution to all your problems-listen to the voice of your heart, follow your dream and lead a happy life. Most people might also think that its stupid chasing a dream forever when you know it is not even possible to achieve it or even get close to it. But the only reason someone is not able to pursue his/her dream is not lack of skill, it’s the lack of passion and determination to do what your heart asks you to do. When you choose a difficult-to-attain dream over an easy-to-obtain job, life will obviously, get tough. But it is only through these challenges; you get to realize your true worth which would not be really happening in a convenient job. However, though all these words sound philosophical and motivating, in reality, a lot of people may argue that life is not a cakewalk and to add on to the troubles, if one goes running behind dreams, it would only be a disaster in the end. But there have been real life examples of people who have taken all the struggles in life and have reached a stage where they are completely satisfied with it. Former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who went from being a boy of the streets, to a doctor and then to the president of a country. Tennis star Sania Mirza, who listened to her heart against all odds of her community and become a sensation, an inspiration for several women. A lot more people like them dared to follow their heart and succeeded in making a mark. Motivation from friends and family is an underlying element in a person’s choice of following his heart and dreams. When you get unconditional support from family to choose what you desire, you are bound to succeed in whatever you might opt for. Someone who understands your dreams, reinforces the confidence in you and helps you reach your goal is a true friend. However, the initial push needs to be from your end if you want to achieve your dream whether there are supporters or not. Listen to your heart, pursue your passion and see how life becomes challenging, surprising and fulfilling. Tulip gets you Hyderabadi’s who have followed their passion, and their experience of sailing through the boat of their dreams.

I am doing my graduation, but the energy to do something has always pushed me forward. And because I am still studying, I prefer taking up something small, which turned out really great for me. Chocolate is a perfect food, as wholesome as it is delicious, a beneficent restorer of exhausted power. It is the best friend of everyone. And so what better than making chocolates and getting them to people who love them, which are many! The chocolates that melts in your mouth so you can savor the taste and ingredients bit by bit are what I prefer giving my clients which makes them come back for orders again and again. Apart from gifting it to others, you can have them for yourself- that’s how tasty they are. And now with holidays I have decided to share it with other chocolate lovers by conducting workshops, so anyone interested can email me on sheenakaur004@gmail.com. Sheena Saluja, Villa Marie College For Girls I gave up my job for the sole reason that I wanted to do something on my own and teaching was not my dream career but has become one. It’s my only passion now. I run a full-fledged school now and I am prepared that probably I might not make money as such for the first few years, but yes, it gives tremendous job satisfaction and in the end that’s what really matters, the term called- Job satisfaction. HPS Kids Paradise has been more than a dream come true for me, as I get my independence yet the challenge of working with young teachers and handling kids. Its been the most wonderful experience and I’m glad the school is running successfully. Lavina Dixit, Director/Principal, HPS Kids Paradise

As per the records go, I was a Software Engineer by Profession, and an electronics graduate by the degree I hold in my hand. However, I had this bad habit of seeing the world differently than most others. I often imagine sequences running, have day-dreams about how would it appear through my words. What would be the details I would focus on? That’s the reason I stepped into Filmmaking and became a Director, Actor, and Writer. So if you are out there, and if you are passionate for anything. Then stand up, get out of that door and run towards your destination because it is obvious that it will not come to you by itself. Only thing one can and should do is to try. Get up, and Do what you want to do. Akshat Sharma, Student, Annapurna International School of Film and Media.

Hardik has been interested in music since his childhood, he loved to listen and even dance on music. Day by day his interest grew and he even used to sing songs, even he used to say movie and cartoon dialogues. One day we were taking nap and suddenly I asked him whether he would like to learn Dj’ing. He said yes and the same moment we started for Panache DJ School where after talking and observing Hardik’s skills for 3 days, Dj Navi told that he would personally like to build his career in Dj and he would pay personal attention to Hardik. And we enrolled him in Panache Dj School. At his age it’s difficult but not impossible. I personally have to spend 4 hrs daily to attend his classes with him and after classes I get his homework and even his practice done. I am confident about his work and ambitions. Me and my wife, both have faith in him. We hope to make him achieve his every dream. Jiten karani, Father of Hardik Karani (5 years), youngest DJ student at Panache Dj School.

I’d always love baking as a kid, but I never took it as a possibility for it to be my career. My ambition was to join my father’s business and do well for our company, but with time, I realized my passion for baking and the importance to follow that passion. I started to believe to be different and do things differently. ‘There is nothing like doing what you love and of course, loving what you do’ ‘Work doesn’t seem like work a single day, because, well, it’s not just work, it’s something close to my heart, just like one of those dreams which come true. ‘I would suggest everyone out there to first know what they are good at, and second pursue the same, because it is the only way you can succeed. Divjoth Chawla, Founder/ Owner, La Crosta.

It takes courage and very strong conviction to follow the dreams of the hat. It is one thing to dream under the sun and another to dream under the stars I have always had a dream I dreamt without knowing that my passion and inclination lay towards cooking, till people told me that everything I cooked had Midas touch. Today I stand at the threshold of realizing it and that insubstantial feeling is going to take a form. The form of course is nothing but the apron and toque. There have been many hurdles in the way of achieving this dream but now I realize that they were only meant to make my faith stronger. Being able to pursue a hotel management degree and live my dream is a great feeling and I hope to reach high and take in every step towards my dream slowly, steadily and perfectly. Niki Khanuja, Pursuing Hotel Management.

Dancing is my passion probably from when I didn’t even know its meaning. I always believed express to impress, after training for years , I started choreographing and taking classes at an early age. Started from a few kids in my area, which later lead me to doing wedding sangeets on a great scale. I balance my studies and my passion together. The immense happiness of my work come from the end result, and it is not their final performance, but the satisfaction and smile on the family as well as the performers, their feedback adds on to my moral support and helps me move forward confidently. Each wedding sangeet, comes with a new experience, meeting new people, sharing emotions and a lot more, in the end I just feel a part of their family. I aspire to keep spreading happiness through my dance, and never let my dream die. Jasleen Kaur Marwa, Student MAY, 2013 23

give it a try and surprise her. you can surprise her by buying her a diamond ring that she couldn’t buy being short of money, you can perform extra-ordinarily in your exams, you can embellish her bedroom without letting if you realize how much your mother has to put up with taking care of everything around the house you will know what gret deal it is. You must be busy with your work, school or college but if you really want to give her a break, give her a day leave and od all the house chores yourself. Take care of kitchen, cleaning, attending phones and doorbells, watering plants, mowing garden and all other stuff she does as a part of her daily regime, and she will be glad than ever. THE DAZZLING PERFORMERS The otherwise calm and quite Westin buzzed with people gearing for a rocking musical experience as the internationally acclaimed Manasi Scott and Ash Chandler were all set to groove the audience to their tunes. Manasi and Ash, who were in the city to support and raise funds for a noble cause called Heal-a-Child and were performing at Westin for the same. The beautiful and charming Manasi Scott and live wire Ash Chandler redefined the definition of stage performances in our country. As I am lost in these thoughts, Manasi walks in dressed in a beautiful red gown along with Ash who perfectly complimented Manasi dressed in a stylish black suit. In Conversation With Manasi Scott She comes from a family of engineers and doctors and she herself was a topper in her Engineering. When everybody thought she would either be an engineer or doctor, she amazed everybody by choosing to pursue her career in entertainment. “My dad is a paediatrician and I had to choose either engineering or medicine and I chose engineering. I topped it. I was good at studies but during my school and college days I did a lot of amateur theatre and singing. I got married right after my Post Graduate. I had two albums released in Australia. My first big gig happened when Amit Trivedi made me host in his fashion show. Since then, there was no looking back.” From being a singer to actress to compering and much more she has all of it, with success. “Spectacular and in fact a very easy job. God has been really kind to me. I always believe that the best happens to you. I think whomever I have met in the industry says that I am a case study. I did 1400 shows without doing a single playback. In fact I am doing my playback now in a film called Aadi Bhagwan. I have always been like this, “I like it, so I do it.” So whatever comes to me I do it. In fact you would find it funny, until my son was born, I never took singing as my profession. (Ash interrupts, “She was doing more shows like an amateur than most of the professionals do. It was like one fine day she decided to call it as her profession though she has been doing so many concerts and has been prolific for so many years.) I sing for the joy of it and leave it to God. It has been a wonderful journey. I could have not been in any other profession. I feel really blessed as I get to travel across the globe, meet so many people and get so much love. For me being on stage is what matters. When I am on stage it is singing, dancing, interacting and acting because stage is that dream place where you can play or be anything,” says the content and happy Manasi when asked about the journey of stardom. When asked about her experience performing at Hyderabad and the most memorable moments in her life she with a glitter in her eyes says, “I am very jealous. The temperature is 26 degrees in day time and

I tweeted this morning saying, “what are we not doing that Hyderabad does. It has always been great to be in Hyderabad. Weather is beautiful and the city is clean. My most memorable moments with Hyderabad would be the 4 or 5 concerts that I did here which all happened at the Falaknuma palace which is a perfect place to perform. Another get experience was performing at the opening ceremony of “The World Military games.” I went into the audience and grooved with them and had so much fun.” Saying this she signs off leaving me mesmerised of her bold yet humble attitude.

Conversation with Ash Chandler He is a fabulous singer, terrific stand up artist and wonderful writer. He is a live wire and has superb comic timing and can make the audience split into laughter. When asked about his journey to this versatile stature he says, “My journey has been quite different. I left home when I was 15 and so now it has been like 26 years. The journey has not been easy but I feel I am blessed. Blessed because I get to do what I like to do. As a kid the classic Indian thought of what will fall back, haunted me. I never had a plan B and sometimes I feel it worked for me because the amazing part of not having Plan B has made my life easy. I don’t see what I do as my profession but I see it as my purpose, purpose of life. I could do other things but I knew whatever I do I would be a performer. It was just like embracing my purpose and sticking with it. That hasn’t been an easy journey but discovering it was the biggest blessing. I never thought of competition as I compete with myself.” As much as he is a fabulous singer, Ash is a terrific writer, when asked about this aspect of him and how much does his writing inspire him, Ash says, “Lot of what I do stems from writing. Be it music or stand up happens because of my writing. However, acting does not come from my writing as others write but one day I hope my acting too comes from my writing.” Ash also is a perfect example of versatility with various facets like writing, acting and singing. When asked how does he manage so many skills he smiles and with a sense of his typical witty humour says, “As a kid I always use to hear people around me saying channelize and I always use to feel that one day I would land up as a cable TV guy. Channelize LOL. However, coming to skills I feel all of writing, singing and acting are woven together.” On his experience with Hyderabad and the most memorable moment as a performer he says, “I love coming to Hyderabad. It’s my 3rd year in a row that I am attending this concert and supporting this cause. It is a cause that is close to my heart. On another note I have loads of friends here and that’s also a reason for me to love Hyderabad. I am gonna stay back and relish some yummy Andhra food at Spicy Venue. (Smiles) Coming to memorable experiences, it is always fabulous to perform at Westin, it is a beautiful infrastructure and every experience in the city has been memorable. Another memorable experience was performing at the Barcelona Stadium at Camp Nou. It was amazing as it is one the best stadiums. I felt humbling.” On that note Ash signs off saying that the audience will be grooving to some of the latest Bollywood numbers. - As told to Swarnalata Pothapragada

I can’t think of just a memory because there are many. Each moment we live there is a memory so there are too many that I cherish. 28 MAY, 2013

Morning - I start my day with some yoga and pranayama, as I think exercising is necessary for healthy living. I am bent towards spirituality so I have been practicing meditation everyday. Spend some time with my dog. Sipping vegetable juice while reading newspaper is another thing I do every morning before heading-out to work.

Work - I had finished my Post-graduation in Marketing from UK before I started working with my dad. I have also started my own construction company, as I was always interested in the construction line, I had a platform and achieved my goal, but there is still long way to go. During some free time I did a few part time courses related to the same, which helped me brush my skills and increase my knowledge about it. My journey so far has been good, with all the learning, experiences of course I had my own share of ups & downs and the stand still moments where you are confused about where you are placed, but over all it has been a good journey so far…(touchwood).

Family & Friends - Both my Family and Friends are the biggest asset in my life. I grew up in a joint family set up, where I learnt a lot of family values for which I am very thankful for, it always shows in a person and helps in turning point of our lives. We are marwari’s and we are originally from Rajasthan

Where do you see yourself in next 2 yearsI really don’t know about next 2 years, 5 years or 10 years, but yes, I definitely have a vision of expanding my existing work and diversifying into different fields and making a ‘Mark’ in all. And I don’t believe in making 5 year plans. I believe in working ‘Today’.

Evenings - I try to finish work early and head to KBR park for a walk, I think that’s the best part of my day, spending time with nature, mother Earth, I try and do some spiritual reading too before I end my day. Weekends - I can’t stay home on weekends, I am a party person, I can dance all night long, or I just catch up with friends or cousins over a swim, poker or dinners. I love watching the American series, ‘Friends’ and my favorite character in that is Ross after whom I have named my Golden Retriever (Dog). I love pets, if it wasn’t for my dad I would have had many more pets in the house. Ross is the most pampered and lazy one in our house and we all dote over him. At least an hour of my day is spent with him. Travel - Both my wife and I love travelling, a break every 6 months is a must, let that be Goa, Amsterdam, or Istanbul. Our latest travel has been to Turkey, where we partied in Istanbul and enjoyed scenic beauty of Cappadocia and Pamukale. Travelling is a good way to spend time bonding, or just relax and explore and experience new and wonderful things. My next trip would be a 7 days course of scuba diving in Andaman.

and we moved to Hyderabad in the early 70’s. My Family has been my support system where they have always been there during my ups and downs. I am a very family guy & we spend a lot of time together, be it over coffee, clubbing or some activities to. I have always had a fantastic bunch of friends who I would call ‘my extended family’, as I have mentioned earlier for me Hyderabad is about my Family & Friends.

Pranav Pingle who is the latest buzz in the city with his documentary “Handle with care” -making everyone fascinated about his work and idea. He says “I have been inclined to this creative work from a very young age. I was a complete outdoor child and my interest in this field began with my father’s influence. My mind was made up when I saw “Life is Beautiful” for the very first time.” Pranav Pingle did his schooling from Hyderabad Public School, and then did his Bachelors in Mass Communication from St. Mary’s College, Yousufguda. For his Masters, he studied Film and Television Production at the University of Bristol in England. “I have developed eight short films during my year at Bristol, ranging from drama to documentary to comedy, and two in Hyderabad that revolved around social causes. In Bristol, my role in these eight films varied from Cinematographer, Producer, Director, Assistant Director and Actor. For my films in Hyderabad, I played the roles of the Director, Cinematographer and Actor. My aim now is to develop the feature film for the Indian Diaspora and make it a success. I look forward to the response and eagerly await the day it is completed. “ I even won best Cinematographer. I met many people from around the world who gave me a vast range of perspectives and ways to look at things. I was given the opportunity to understand various filmmakers and their approaches. I interacted with professional actors, gaining different responses and suggestions to scripts. I was exposed to world-class equipment and knowledge which just added on and help me purse my dream.” But he says his journey has just begun. He came back to Hyderabad and started Mirage Media. “Abeer: A Fatal Nuance” was his first film under Mirage Media and “Handle With Care” is his second which has been gaining a great response from, people, media and online too. He adds “There’s not much of a difference between England and Hyderabad. The creative process is the same, but it is a little harder here in India, for a youngster to break into this industry and make a mark. The response has been brilliant so far. I received great feedback from a lot of people about the story of faith, hope and perseverance. I was told that “Handle with Care” was a mind changing experience and that it had the power to change the behavior of the society. I was congratulated for bringing such a noble cause out in the open. What Next? Five years from now I hope to have made a few ad films to gain more experience and knowledge. I also hope to have developed a feature film for the Indian Diaspora, for which I have already begun work. People are becoming more accepting. Patience is now more prominent among the youth, for they understand that to make it big in industries such as this, one requires immense patience. Success is not defined by the amount of money you make but by the amount of people you touch.

God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers.

Jewish Proverb

An ode to mothers! They have toiled, they have sacrificed, they have given more than we can ever imagine. Satpreet Kaur gets a special collection of Mother’s Day Messages from their son/daughter’s for our boldest and gentlest mothers, and a take on their journey of motherhood.

Karan & Kunal on their Mother Sangeeta Srinivasan Karan - My mother obviously has been an extremely important part of my life. From academics to my social circle, she has immersed herself completely, and is the first person I go to with any problem or concern I have. We do spend as much time together as we can, catch a movie once in a while maybe, but we make it a point to go out for dinner every week to catch and keep up with each other’s lives. She is probably the most understanding and hardworking person I’ve ever seen, her modesty and humility I think are her best traits and that’s probably the biggest thing I’ve learnt from her. To work hard and be humble no matter what. She isn’t perfect, and she might not be the easy going mother around, and I know our relationship has been strained at times and we have had our ups and downs but I love her and I know she loves me. So to all you teens out there, I know our parents get on our nerves some times, but whatever they do, they do it for our own good, so don’t take them for granted and make them proud! Kunal - My mom has only one dream in life, she hopes her children make it big in this world, earn a name for themselves and stand on their feet with pride. She has always put her children’s first, she’s sacrificed a lot, she tells me what’s right and what’s wrong, guides me to the right path. I couldn’t have wished for a better mom, she’s always there for me and 100% behind me all the time. All I wish to do is make her proud and make her wish come true. Sangeeta - Every woman wants to be a proud mother and I surely am. I am mother of two amazing sons Karan & Kunal. We are a small and close knit family. My journey of motherhood had its own ups and down but a wonderful experience. There were times were I use to struggle on my own with two small kids especially when my husband had to travel for work most of the time and I had to manage everything all by myself especially the times when kids fell sick taking them to the doctor. But those were the challenging days. But now it’s a different phase where children are in their teens and now my role of a mother changes to a friend. I am proud to be their friend and they share all their problems with me. I think God couldn’t have given me a better gift than my wonderful family.

Kushal Saraf For His Mother Saakshi Saraf My mom Saakshi Saraf is a Fashion Designer, she lives her dream and balances her life beautifully. She has always stood by me and for me. I still remember those days when I was young and my dad use to scold me and she would immediately step in and stop him. She is always there like a shield to protect me from everyone in this world, she loves me more than anyone and would never want to see me crying or hurt. When my dad was out on business trips we use to party hard go out for dinners and would have lots of fun. Even today she guides me and no matter what I never take any major decision without talking about it to her. What I am today is totally because of her. I can never forget the things and all the compromises she has done for me, and I’m sure when she is going to read this she will have tears in her eyes. Mom are a living legend in everyone’s life. It’s the first word a child speaks, she is the first person a child knows in this world, and first one he is connected too. From a child’s birth, to his upbringing, his education & the values taught to him, is all done by the beautiful lady in his life- his mom. A small story goes like, once a boy came home and his mom left a note for him saying, please heat the food and eat and also do the gardening today as I am attending a kitty party. The son does so and while leaving for school leaves a note for mom, as I have done your work of heating the food and doing the gardening job I take compensation for this and writes some amount for both the jobs. When he returns from school he receives another note saying, very true that you have done my work but my dear son what about the work I do for you every day- I make your bed every day, polish your school shoes, iron your clothes, help you in home work, make your lunch box, but I don’t expect any compensation because my dear son I love you and always will. The moral here is you will always get love from your mom, even if she isn’t behaving good with you. There is a reason behind everything and even if u dont treat her well she will still love you the way she always did. Hats off to every mom!! She is really a living legend.

Vedica Bajaj For Her Mother Vinny Bajaj As clichéd as it gets, every person believes that they love their mother more than anybody ever can. To say that my mom is the most important person in my life would be an understatement. Because she is much more than that. She is nothing less than a superhero to me. A person I look up to in everything I do and everything I aspire to be. Her courage to be able to carry so much weight on her shoulders, at times when everything seems so impossible, it is she who inspires me to face up to the otherwise smaller problems I face. But that one thing that will always be so close to my heart, no matter where life takes me is the sacrifices my mom makes only to see me smile. It is beyond me how a person can be so selfless in giving love and compassion, maybe that is why a mother’s presence in your life is irreplaceable. My mother is my best friend, to say the least. Our relationship is not based on only sense of responsibility and respect but also trust and freedom. Because I know that she is the only person who will ever truly love me for who I really am. Words will never be enough, or maybe even actions to be able to show her how thankful I am for all that she has given me. The lessons, the love, the learning and most of all the faith. The faith, that no matter what, there is that one person who will catch you when you fall, every time. Vinny Bajaj: A minute ago you were pregnant and then suddenly the next you are holding your an infant who breathes, cries, squirms, watches. She is cute and cuddly full of charm, custom made to fit your arms. It’s was a Kodak moment just like this when Vedica was born. Since that day all days spent with her have been magical I want to slow them down and hold on to it forever. I know that once upon a time I had a life without her but I can’t quite remember it. Time flies, I can write a book on Vedica and still have more to say. She’s seventeen now and she’s my buddy my whole life revolves around her. She’s the center of my universe.

Harita Singh For Her Mother Navjot Sudan My mother is the most beautiful woman in the world for me. She is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She is loving, caring, and giving. She is smart and funny and I love her more than anything in this world. She is a gifted woman with a bundle of talents. My mother is a homemaker, an artist and the world’s best cook. One of the most creative people I’ve ever known. She is my idol, my superhero, and I can’t imagine my life without her. She is my everything, my friend, my teacher, my guide and of-course a sister I never had. We have constant arguments over the silliest of things but can’t stay mad at each other for more than 5 minutes. I am like the younger sister who raids her closet all the time. She is one of the coolest mums ever. But she, like any other parent can get super annoying. She is a cleanliness freak. And if anything is out of its place then I’ve had it. She has taught me how to love, forgive and believe in good. She always says that good things happen to good people so be a better person each day. And each day when I look at her I wish that I could be more like her.. Cause for me she is perfect. MAY, 2013 33

SPECIAL Rushit Mehta For His Mother Bina Mehta It’s a saying that because God couldn’t reach us all and take care of us personally he made a mother. Mom is the first person we start learning from, it’s difficult to imagine a life without her, she stands by you, and fights for you. My mom scolds me when I am wrong, I even end up crying, but in the end she is the one who lifts my mood and makes me smile. She’s the one who takes the pain, and guides us rightly through, there is no better listener and will always keep her children as her top priority. Me and my mom are an outstanding combination, I am shy but my mom can make friends as soon as she enters the place. She is the only one who can take our melodrama over and over again which upset’s her at times but she always loved and care for me in the same way, my mom is the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The best memory – I really cherish all our pillow fight, no matter how tiring the day was or where we were, we used to have our pillow fights, both of us acting totally childish and acting like we were best friends. One other memory would be, when I used to act stubborn to eat food, so she used to hand feed me and we used to sit in the veranda so whenever I saw a butterfly I started running behind it and just went it stopped somewhere I would be quietly looking at it with an open mouth and my mother would grab that opportunity and would quickly put food inside my mouth. I used to make her run all around the house and sometimes get into our neighbours house with a plate in my mother’s hand. The best thing about her is she does what she wants to no matter how, she always manages to make herself happy and laugh at little things. JOURNEY TO

MOTHERHOOD Being a mother is a different life in itself it is considered the most experiencing journey that is a pleasure but comes with its perks which is totally worth the end result - a new life to cherish! In this article we take you through different stages, problems, situations you will be facing with or during your pregnancy, so you are well prepared and well aware of everything you will be needing and also experts advice to help you overcome those jitters. Trying to conceive- Fertility awareness The menstrual cycle Being aware of your menstrual cycle and the changes in your body that happen during this time can help you know when you are most likely to get pregnant. The average menstrual cycle lasts 28 days. The amount of time before ovulation occurs is different in every woman and even can be different from month to month in the same woman, varying from 13 to 20 days long. Learning about this part of the cycle is important because it is when ovulation pregnancy can occur. After ovulation, every woman (unless she has a health problem that affects her periods or becomes pregnant) will have a period within 14 to 16 days. Knowing when you're most fertile will help you plan pregnancy. There are three ways you can keep track of your fertile times. They are: Basal body temperature method Basal body temperature is your temperature at rest as soon as you awake in the morning. A woman's basal body temperature rises slightly with ovulation. So by recording this temperature daily for several months, you'll be able to predict your most fertile days. Many things can affect basal body temperature. For your chart to be useful, make sure to take your temperature every morning at about the same time. Things that can alter your temperature include: Drinking alcohol or smoking the night before, getting a poor night's sleep, having a fever ,doing anything in the morning before you take your temperature — including going to the bathroom and talking on the phone. Calendar method This involves recording your menstrual cycle 36 MAY, 2013

on a calendar for eight to 12 months. The first day of your period is Day 1. Circle Day 1 on the calendar. The length of your cycle may vary from month to month. So write down the total number of days it lasts each time. To find out the first day when you are most fertile, subtract 18 from the total number of days in your shortest cycle. Take this new number and count ahead that many days from the first day of your next period. Draw an X through this date on your calendar. The X marks the first day you're likely to be fertile. Causes of infertility Some women want children but either cannot conceive or keep miscarrying. This is called infertility. Lots of couples have infertility problems. Some common reasons for infertility in women include: Age Women generally have some decrease in fertility starting in their early 30s. As a woman ages, normal changes that occur in her ovaries and eggs make it harder to become pregnant. As a woman nears menopause, the ovaries may not release an egg each month, which also can make it harder to get pregnant. Health problems Some women have diseases or conditions that affect their hormone levels, which can cause infertility. Most common problems are polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) , primary ovarian insufficiency (POI),and luteal phase defect (LPD0. Lifestyle factors Certain lifestyle factors also can have a negative effect on a woman's fertility. Examples include smoking, alcohol use, weighing much more or much less than an ideal body weight, a lot of strenuous exercise, and having an eat-

ing disorder. Stress also can affect fertility. Lifestyle choices also can affect the number and quality of a man's sperm. Alcohol and drugs can temporarily reduce sperm quality. Men also can have health problems that affect their sexual and reproductive function. These can include sexually transmitted infections (STIs), diabetes, surgery on the prostate gland, or a severe testicle injury or problem. When to see your doctor You should talk to your doctor about your fertility if: • You are younger than 35 and have not been able to conceive after one year of frequent sex without birth control. •

You are age 35 or older and have not been able to conceive after six months of frequent sex without birth control.

Happily, doctors are able to help many infertile couples go on to have babies.

Prenatal care and tests Medical checkups and screening tests help keep you and your baby healthy during pregnancy. This is called prenatal care. It also involves education and counseling about how to handle different aspects of your pregnancy. During your visits, your doctor may discuss many issues, such as healthy eating and physical activity, screening tests you might need, and what to expect during labor and delivery. Ask your primary care doctor, friends, and family members for provider recommendations. When making your choice, think about: • Reputation •

Personality and bedside manner

The provider's gender and age

Office location and hours

Whether you always will be seen by the same provider during office checkups

Who covers for the provider when she or he is not available

Where you want to deliver

How the provider handles phone consultations and after-hour calls

Place to deliver your baby Hospitals are a good choice for women with health problems, pregnancy complications, or those who are at risk for problems during labor and delivery. Hospitals offer the most advanced medical equipment and highly trained doctors for pregnant women and their babies. In a hospital, doctors can do a cesarean delivery if you or your baby is in danger during labor. Women can get epidurals or many other pain relief options. Also, more and more hospitals now offer on-site birth centers, which aim to offer a style of care similar to standalone birth centers. Questions to ask when choosing a hospital: o Is it close to your home? o Is a doctor who can give pain relief, such as an epidural, at the hospital 24-hours a day? o

Do you like the feel of the labor and delivery rooms?

o

Are private rooms available?

o

How many support people can you invite into the room with you?

o Does it have a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in case of serious problems with the baby? o

Can the baby stay in the room with you?

o Does the hospital have the staff and setup to support successful breastfeeding? Prenatal checkups During pregnancy, regular checkups are very important. This consistent care can help keep you and your baby healthy, spot problems if they occur, and prevent problems during delivery. Typically, routine checkups occur: • Once each month for weeks four through 28 •

Twice a month for weeks 28 through 36

Weekly for weeks 36 to birth

Women with high-risk pregnancies need to see their doctors more often. Become a partner with your doctor to manage your care. Keep all of your appointments everyone is important! Ask questions and read to educate yourself about this exciting time. Monitor your baby’s activity After 28 weeks, keep track of your baby’s movement. This will help you to notice if your baby is moving less than normal, which could be a sign that your baby is in distress

and needs a doctor’s care. An easy way to do this is the “count-to-10” approach. Count your baby’s movements in the evening — the time of day when the fetus tends to be most active. Lie down if you have trouble feeling your baby move. After 32 weeks the fetal movement can be tracked by BFMC (baby fetal movement count). There are 2 ways to track BFMC. 1. Cardiff Count to 10 – The pregnant women should be able to record 10 movements in 10 hrs. 2. After each meal the pregnant women should lie on the side for an hour and count the fetal movements. She should be able to feel 3 movements. If the movements are adequate its reassuring and if the movements are inadequate then it needs to be reported to the doctor immediately. High-risk pregnancy Pregnancies with a greater chance of complications are called “high-risk.” But this doesn’t mean there will be problems. The following factors may increase the risk of problems during pregnancy: • Very young age or older than 35 •

Overweight or underweight

Problems in previous pregnancy

Health conditions you have before you become pregnant, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, cancer, and HIV

Pregnancy with twins or other multiples

Women with high-risk pregnancies need prenatal care more often and sometimes from a specially trained doctor. Stages of pregnancy Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, counting from the first day of your last normal period. The weeks are grouped into three trimesters. First trimester (week 1-week 12) For some women, body image is a huge concern during pregnancy. During the first trimester your body undergoes many changes. Hormonal changes affect almost every organ system in your body. These changes can trigger symptoms even in the very first weeks of pregnancy. Your period stopping is a clear sign that you are pregnant. Other changes may include: Extreme tiredness ,Upset stomach with or without throwing up (morning sickness) , Cravings or distaste for certain foods, Mood swings, Constipation (trouble having bowel movements),Need to pass urine more often, Headache, Heartburn, Weight gain or loss. As your body changes, you might need to make changes to your daily routine, such as going to bed earlier or eating frequent, small meals. Fortunately, most of these discomforts will go away as your pregnancy progresses.

and delivery

Second trimester (week 13-week 28) Most women find the second trimester of pregnancy easier than the first. But it is just as important to stay informed about your pregnancy during these months. You might notice that symptoms like nausea and fatigue are going away. But other new, more noticeable changes to your body are now happening. Your abdomen will expand as the baby continues to grow. And before this trimester is over, you will feel your baby beginning to move! As your body changes to make room for your growing baby, you may have: Body aches, such as back, abdomen, groin, or thigh pain, Stretch marks on your abdomen, breasts, thighs, or buttocks, A line on the skin running from belly button to pubic hairline, Patches of darker skin, usually over the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip. Patches often match on both sides of the face. This is sometimes called the mask of pregnancy. Numb or tingling hands, called carpal tunnel syndrome, Itching on the abdomen, palms, and soles of the feet.(Call your doctor if you have nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice or fatigue combined with itching. These can be signs of a serious liver problem). Swelling of the ankles, fingers, and face. (If you notice any sudden or extreme swelling or if you gain a lot of weight really quickly, call your doctor right away. This could be a sign of preeclampsia.) Third trimester (week 29-week 40) You’re in the home stretch! Some of the same discomforts you had in your second trimester will continue. Plus, many women find breathing difficult and notice they have to go to the bathroom even more often. This is because the baby is getting bigger and it is putting more pressure on your organs. Don’t worry, your baby is fine and these problems will lessen once you give birth. Some new body changes you might notice in the third trimester include: Shortness of breath, Heartburn, Swelling of the ankles, fingers, and face. (If you notice any sudden or extreme swelling or if you gain a lot of weight really quickly, call your doctor right away. This could be a sign of preeclampsia). Your belly button may stick out, trouble sleeping, the baby “dropping”, or moving lower in your abdomen, contractions, which can be a sign of real or false labor. As you near your due date, your cervix becomes thinner and softer (called effacing). This is a normal, natural process that helps the birth canal (vagina) to open during the birthing process. SPECIAL progress with a vaginal exam as you near your due date. Get excited — the final countdown has begun! Body changes and discomforts Everyone expects pregnancy to bring an expanding waistline. But many women are surprised by the other body changes that pop up. Women may suffer with various problems like body aches, constipation, dizziness, fatigue, sleep problems, heartburn and indigestion, hemorrhoids, itching, leg cramps, morning sickness, nasal problems, numb or tingling hands, stretch marks, skin changes, swelling, urinary frequency and leaking. Consult doctor to know right way to deal or control with your pain. Screening tests for different trimesters: First Trimester- In the first visit the treating doctor takes a detailed medical and surgical history of the pregnant woman which also includes a family history, genetic history, drug history and her past obstetric history. The pregnant woman is investigated for a complete blood picture, virology screening and thyroid profile and sugar testing. Between the 5th to 7th week a scan is advised to localize the pregnancy in the uterus and viability along with this a Double Marker blood test is also done. In case of Recurrent pregnancy losses she is screened for viral illnesses (TORCH Test - An Acronym for Toxoplasma, Rubella, Cytomegalo Virus, and Herpes virus), Thyroid disturbances and Immunological causes of pregnancy loses are also ruled out with blood checks. Second Trimester- In the subsequent visits a very crucial NT scan (Nuchal Transluscency scan) is together done with Quadruple Marker test in blood between 11 weeks to 13 week & 6 days. This is the first level of screening for Down syndrome. A Glucose Challenge test along with a urine examination is done between 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. An anomaly scan TIFFA scan which is a detail scan of the fetus is done to pick up any abnormalities. This scan is done between 19 weeks to 24 weeks. Third Trimester – For the screening of the fetus growth scan and Dopplers is done at 32 and 37 weeks. Screening test for diabetes is specially done after 32 weeks in high risk cases. Urine exam is done in the 3rd trimester to check for protein and infections at each visit. Options for Painless delivery: The ecstasy of being pregnant is often marred with apprehension, anxiety and fear of labor pains. Labor pains are one of the most painful processes and is rated 2nd after terminal cancer pains and limb amputation pains. The earlier adage “No Pain No Gain” no longer holds true. If you deliver at a hospital where your baby’s doctor normally sees patients, she will see the baby right after the delivery. If not, a pediatrician on staff at the hospital should see your baby right after the birth. Then you can call your baby’s doctor to schedule a visit a few days after birth. Remember to get your baby’s medical records before leaving the hospital. Your baby’s doctor will need them. Paying for your baby’s health care To get regular checkups and important vaccines, your baby will need health insurance. Mrs. S- a 31 years delightful lady conceived after treatment for infertility. The routine ultrasound examination of the fetus at 20 weeks by a sonologist found abnormality of the heart. The couple was very disappointed and clueless about the fate of their unborn child. They came to us in a dilemma, whether to continue the pregnancy or go for termination? A complete fetal echocardiogram was done and fetus was found to have ‘D- Transposition of great vessels’ – a condition in which both the major vessels are arising from the wrong chambers of the heart. Amniocentesis was done and found normal chromosomes. Baby was delivered normally and underwent corrective surgery at two weeks after birth. Child is now 5 years old stood 1st in the class and regularly goes to swimming.

MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY

Nearly 10 out of 1000 are born with congenital heart disease every day. Twenty percent of them are critical heart diseases which need immediate attention within the first month of life. Most of the untreated cases do not celebrate their first birthday. Normal life expectancy with good quality of life is expected in these children with early treatment. Fetal Echocardiography Fetal echocardiography is an accurate, safe and simple method to diagnose congenital heart disease. This ultrasound examination allows detailed diagnosis of congenital heart disease during pregnancy. It is a general screening tool for the detection of heart disease when baby is in womb. Goals of fetal echocardiogram: i) Fetal echocardiography can delineate the anatomy of the heart and thus development of congenital heart disease ii) The prognosis and outcomes of the heart disease can be predicted iii) The delivery can be planned in a tertiary care centre for timely neonatal management iv) Allows prompt evaluation of genetic syndromes and fetal karyotype v) Navigator for the management of fetal heart rhythm disturbance either low heart rate (bradycardia)or high heart rate (tachycardia) Indications for the fetal Echocardiogram: l Suspected abnormality of the heart during routine ultrasound examination l Any other abnormalities of the fetus e.g. skeletal (bone) abnormalities, lung abnormalities l Suspected genetic abnormality in first three months of pregnancy. Increased first trimester nuchal translucency measurement (thickening of cervical subcutaneous tissue) l Elderly primi (first pregnancy above 30 years of age) l Gestational Diabetes ( first time diagnosed during pregnancy) l Exposure to radiation, poisonous gases and medications l Fever with rash during pregnancy l History of Congenital heart disease in the family

Previous abortions and miscarriages

l

Advantages of Fetal echocardiography: l Provides potential benefits for the both baby and family by early diagnosing heart disease l Specific family counseling can be done l Arrangements for delivery at a tertiary care centre providing neonatal care can be made l The timing of cardiac surgery can be planned in the babies with heart disease l Fetal echocardiogram is useful in diagnosing and managing the heart rate problems of the baby What is the ideal time? Fetal heart can be completely visualized by the end of 16 weeks. This test ideally should be done between 18 to 22 weeks of gestational age. Imaging is sometimes difficult beyond 28 weeks because of rib shadowing, fetal position and mother’s body habitus.

What are the heart Diseases cannot be diagnosed during pregnancy? • Small holes in the heart which usually don’t affect baby’s heart (small ASD and VSD) • PDA : This is a part of normal fetal circulation and hence can’t be diagnosed be-

• •

fore birth Minor valve leaks and blocks Abnormal drainage of one or two pulmonary veins

Limitations of fetal echocardiogram: • This test is an operator dependent and hence should be done by the trained pediatric cardiologist or fetal medicine specialist • Poor fetal positioning may be a difficulty in obtaining the good images • Less image penetration leading to inadequate fetal heart information in obese pregnant woman • Multiple pregnancies at times may cause difficulty Treatment during pregnancy: The major advantage of fetal echocardiogram is diagnosing the complex heart disease during pregnancy. The heart disease which are not amenable for the treatment after birth like: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (main chamber of the heart is underdeveloped), Heterotaxy syndrome (abnormal position of the heart and other visceral organs) and severe valve leaks (Ebstein’s anomaly) can be terminated sometimes based on the family decision within the medico-legal limits. Heart diseases like critical aortic obstruction (major vessel of heart) can be treated during pregnancy. This treatment is available only in the selected centers in the world, we are one of them. The heart rhythm disorders like tachycardia (high heart rate) should be treated whenever diagnosis is made during pregnancy. Untreated cases may develop fetal heart failure called ‘Hydrops’ – a condition where water accumulates in the baby’s abdomen, chest and around heart. These fetuses succumb unless and until we treat them effectively. Mother will be given oral medications based on the type of tachycardia. These medications will MAY, 2013 39

SPECIAL cross the barrier (placenta) between mother and fetus and control the heart rate. The non-responders to the maternal treatment will be given direct injection to the fetus. One of the happiest mothers in the recent times is Mrs. Begum; her fetus suffered with extremely fast high heart rate and didn’t respond to any medications. Baby started deteriorating day by day. Fetus was too small for early delivery due to immature lungs the Fetus was given intra-muscular injection as a last resort. The heart rate was controlled after six hours of injection. She gave birth to a healthy girl child. Both mother and baby were healthy and went home happily.

Myths and facts about fetal Echocardiography Sonography is harmful for any unborn child. Ultrasound waves are safe. There are no harmful effects of these waves on developing fetus contrary to the general belief. Every pregnant lady should go for this scan? Routine fetal heart evaluation can be performed during the anomaly scan however, a complete fetal echocardiogram will be done with suspected heart anomaly, women with diabetes, previous baby or sibling or any of the parents was born with a heart defect or assisted fertilization are some of the indications.

Dr. Nageswara Rao Koneti

Chief Pediatric cardiologist, Care Hospital, Banjara Hills

All the baby parts will be scanned during scan? No, this is special test, most of the times done by pediatric cardiologist i.e. one expert in baby’s heart problems hence only heart will be examined. Should I come empty stomach before the scan? Absoulutly no need, you should have food also some liquids before coming for the scan.

Weight Issues during Managing acne Pregnancy during pregnancy Eating a healthy, balanced diet will help your baby get the nutrients he or she needs and grow at a healthy rate. Though you do need some extra calories, it’s not necessary to ‘’eat for two.’’ Ask your health care provider how much weight you should gain. Gaining a healthy amount of weight during pregnancy can help your baby have a healthy start. It reduces your risk of complications in pregnancy and at delivery. It also improves your long-term health. What kind of diet should I follow? Diet should be nutritious with a good balance of Proteins, Fats and Carbohydrates with plenty of fruits and vegetables. It should be particularly rich in protein, folic acid, vitamin B2, iron and calcium and these can be obtained from whole grain cereals, legumes, low fat dairy products, poultry, fish, leafy greens and citrus fruits. Special attention should also be given to Fiber which is essential for healthy digestion and bowel movement. Up your fiber intake by eating lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grain cereals, brown rice and pulses. At the same time keep a check on consumption of empty calories such as carbonated drinks, solid fats and sweets. Remember that the foetus needs nutrients for growth and health and not just calories.

which are essential for the healthy growth of the fetus.

How much weight gain is normal? One should gain enough weight to ensure optimum weight, health and nutrition for the baby, but not so much that you get complications and are left with lots to lose after pregnancy. The amount of weight you should gain also depends on how heavy you were before you got pregnant. If your Body Mass Index (Weight in Kg / (Height in meters) is between 20 to 25.9, a weight gain of 11 to 14 Kg is normal. Women with a higher BMI should try to limit the amount of weight they gain as it would lead to complications like gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, backache etc.

• Talk to your health care provider before increasing your activity level or before starting an exercise program.

Is it safe to Lose Weight When Pregnant? Going on a weight loss diet is not advised during pregnancy. If you were overweight before you got pregnant, cutting down on empty calories, keeping up a moderate exercise schedule and eating healthy food might make you lose weight, especially during the first few months. It is safe as long as you don’t cut down on the important nutrients

What can you do to gain a healthy amount of weight during pregnancy? • Talk to your health care provider early in your pregnancy about what you can expect and to set a weight gain goal.

Acne can occur at any stages of pregnancy more so in people who are already suffered from acne in teen years. Even in pregnancy acne can erupt in various grades of severity and might not be restricted to only face. Fluctuating hormone levels are the prime reason for these breakouts. Managing acne during pregnancy is quite tricky. One cannot use OTC products blindly without second opinion from doctors as they carry risk to the growing baby.

• Eat "twice as healthy", not "twice as much". In most cases, just a little more food is enough. • Add up activities in periods of at least 10 minutes, for a total of 30 minutes of activity each day. • Activities such as walking, gardening, housework, and swimming can be done safely during pregnancy.

Two things conspire to cause breakouts: hormone surges, of course (in this case, progesterone, which causes your glands to increase acne-causing secretions) and an increase in the amount of fluids your body retains (these fluids contain toxins, which lead to zits). need. Using a mild cleanser, washing hair everyday, avoiding long-stay on cosmetics and using water based, noncomedogenic products is recommended. What solutions are off-limits? During pregnancy use of regular acne medications like antibiotics, retinoids or hormones is a strict no no as it harms developing foetus. Even OTC products should not be used without consulting your dermatologist. Only if the acne is severe, the doctor will take a call on which antibiotic gel to be prescribed keeping the safety and pregnancy trimester in mind. What preventive steps one can take? Medications is not the first line of management for mild acne during pregnancy. Correction of diet is very important. Especially with PREGNANCY CRAVINGS one should be careful in the quality of food they consume. Be doubly cautious in avoiding high caloric, high glycemic index foods. Eat lots of fruits , green leafy vegetables and hydrate well which is good even for the growing foetus. More smart strategies for treating acne during pregnancy? Maintain a good personal hygiene. Always use a clean pillow case as well as gadgets which comes in close contact with skin. If the acne is very severe then the dermatologist will take a call about further need of chemical peels along with topical gels. Hair Care During Pregnancy Pregnancy affects the entire body, including hair, skin and nails. Often, there are undesirable changes that can leave a pregnant woman worried or frightened. However, hair loss in particular is very common during pregnancy and should not cause undue concern. Hair loss is especially common just after pregnancy. Hair loss during and after pregnancy can be due to hormonal problems. An overactive or underactive thyroid can cause hair to fall out. If this is the case, your physician can treat the hair loss by treating the thyroid disease. Other hormonal changes that cause hair loss during pregnancy will often resolve themselves as the body returns to pre-pregnancy hormone levels and the normal cycle of hair growth and loss starts again. Hair loss during pregnancy may also be a sign of a vitamin or mineral deficiency. There are a number of things that you can do to have a healthier head of hair and/or reduce the extent of some of the hair loss during pregnancy or after delivery: -

A New Beginnin g!

Indian Weddings are known for their elaborate and opulent celebration. With a beautiful wedding comes several blissful and wonderful ceremonies, the engagement ceremony is one such ceremony that marks the beginning of the wedding concord- also known as ‘sagai’ or ring ceremony. It is one such ceremony that marks the beginning of the beautiful and blissful journey of marriage. The engagement ceremony is considered as the most elated and essential pre- wedding ceremony in India. Being a country of diverse cultures the engagement ceremony is called by different names, such as ‘aashirwad’, ‘chunni chadana’ ‘Sagan ceremony’, ‘mangani’, Roka , etc. However the essence on the ceremony would remain as divine and pure as it is. Every individual prefers their engagement ceremony to be different, it could be just a personal proposal by the boy, proposing to his sweetheart in a unique way with a diamond ring, a separate ring ceremony held by the families a month or so before the wedding date, some families even like to keep it very simple by keeping a small ceremony involving only the two families at the brides place. The latest in trend is where the family opts to club the ring or ‘sagai ’ceremony along with the sangeet, just one day before the wedding. If you wish to do your engagement the grand way you can hire a wedding planner who would look after everything and manage everything relating to the ceremony, from the decoration to food to organizing and setting up the place to guest relations and sending invites. Today decorations and themes are profusely available in the market and you could choose from the theme that you could relate the most to. In order to make the day most enticing, beautiful and memorable you have to choose the most unique and exquisite diamond rings. A diamond is said to be forever not just because of its durability but also because a love worthy of marriage is said to last forever, and that is the significance of a diamond engagement ring. Rings are available in different varieties, depending upon your budget rings are available in different sizes and styles, gothic rings, antique styled diamond rings, diamond solitaire rings, princess cut diamond engagement ring and the list goes on. And today it’s not just about the ring, but how the rings are presented as well. Rashmi Sanghi of Om Creations specializes in beautiful engagement platters and adorable customized ring boxes. It’s not just how the diamond sparkles but how well you present the sparkling diamonds! No matter which ring you choose or how well you organize your ring ceremony, the period between engagement to marriage is considered as the most momentous, special and wonderful time in a couple’s life. The engagement marks as the first step towards the sacred bond of the 46 MAY, 2013

wedding. The courtship period is the time when the bride and groom get to know each other and a bond of sharing and understanding each other is formed between them. The courtship period is especially very helpful in arranged marriages it helps the couple from becoming

Wedding strangers, to friends, to partners to soul mates for life. This is the time when the bride and groom devote maximum time to understand each other, the time spent brings the couple emotionally closer. And thus from engagement begins the blissful journey of the wedding and life ahead and a future togetherness.

As an event manager I would say that any event related to wedding whether it is ring ceremony or sangeet or reception it has to be planned in advance. It requires a budget, venue and a theme selection. As far as this season is concerned I think I will lay more emphasis on the color and creative elements, taste of the client is also important as it gives me ideas for creativity. Resorts and star hotels are favorites these days when it comes to venue and decor for sagai. Sagai is usually clubbed with the sangeet ceremony so I use a bit of bollywood and filmy elements because of the Indian naach gaana. I started my career as a choreographer so it’s an added advantage when I plan decor for my client. Contemporary, traditional and fusion works good for ring ceremony. In short I design the dreams seen by most couples when it comes to their wedding. Shruti, Wedding Planner

Nagarjuna Sagar, or Vijayapuri, as it was earlier called is a small town located between Guntur and Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. The biggest attraction of this place is Nagarjuna-Sagar dam. The dam, with a height of 124 metres, is the world’s tallest masonry dam. Steam boat rides are available to the dam where the turbines can be seen in action. Apart from the dam, there is the island of Nagarjuna Konda to see here. It is a scenic town on an artificial lake. Nagarjunasagar is one of the largest concrete dams in India. It has 26 crust gates. It is not only used for agricultural purpose but also for hydro electric & drinking purpose. I think I’m lucky to see this place. Food provided at hotel was wonderful from there I went to Yethipthala water falls which was on the macharla road. When you go to sagar you must see nandikonda which was built by Acharya Nagarjuna & we have a Dharmasala nearby Nagarjuna University also.It is best to travel by bus & it is just 150 kilometers away from city which takes 4 hrs to go. Harsh driving on sagar roads lead to accidents because it is single track road. All in all, it was a wonderful journey. Shruti Agarwal, Graduate.

WAYS TO

EAT HEALTHY IN PREGNANCY

A

pregnant woman needs to ensure that her diet provides enough nutrients and energy for her baby to develop and grow properly. Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean that you’ll automatically put on weight. Maintaining a healthy weight during pregnancy means it’s easier for you to carry your baby, eating healthily while you are pregnant can help keep you well and give your baby the best possible start in life. You don’t need to go on a special diet and there is no need to eat for two – even if you are expecting twins or triplets. But you should make sure that you eat a variety of foods so that you get the full range of nutrients that you and your baby need. It’s only in the final three months of your pregnancy that you need an extra 200 calories a day.

During pregnancy, a woman’s body needs more iron than usual to produce all the blood needed to supply nutrition to the placenta. Good sources of iron are green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach, strawberries, muesli and whole meal bread.

Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. These are a great source of vitamins, minerals and fiber. try to eat at least five portions of a variety of different fruit and vegetables every day.

Include milk, cheese and yoghurt in your diet. These contain calcium, essential for healthy bones.

Consider cutting back or skipping caffeinated beverages. That may be a snap if you’re suddenly revolted by the stuff during your first trimester. If you’re still craving it, cut back very gradually to avoid side effects such as headaches.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause physical defects, learning disabilities, and emotional problems in children, so many experts recommend that you give up alcohol for your entire pregnancy.

Steer clear of raw seafood, unpasteurized milk and cheese made from unpasteurized milk and raw and undercooked meat and poultry. All are possible sources of bacteria that can harm an unborn child. Eat potatoes, bread, rice, pasta, these are good sources of energy and should make up the main part of every meal. Eat wholegrain varieties.

Important Health Tip You should always make sure that you follow good hygiene practices and prepare food safely – especially when you are pregnant.

A BOND BY

Y

ou have seen her in parties, events and organizing shows, you have seen her as the pretty lady turning every face around but Tulip explores her side of an impeccable mother and best friend of her son, we get you a special bond of mother and son- Sushila and Ronak Bokadia.

Sushila Bokadia - I was born in Mumbai, and pursued my education there too. I got married to Mr. Milap Bokadia in 1988 and moved to my new home in Hyderabad as he was settled

my hubby, and discovering new places are just something I love. Many wouldn’t believe but cricket is a sport I love to watch, especially watching Dhoni bat, but I wouldn’t consider him as my favorite, Kapil Dev is the cricketer whom I believe to be best. I like keeping myself busy and presently I am planning to start a new club for ladies, where we could train them and encourage them for their passion. I always believed that service to humanity is the work of life. Ronak Bokadia - I was born in Mumbai too, but was brought up in Hyderabad, I pursed my graduation from St. Marys College (Yousufguda), during my school times I was a very good soccer player, and was part of the team which played many tournaments. As I

here. I am a very passionate person and do things I believe in. I love reading novels, especially the one’s written by Ved Prakash Sharma, his thrilling suspense and stories are just amazing. I always liked to design my home, people always complimented my work and said, I could be a good interior designer. I spend a lot of my time with my family, we go on long drives, I like to go shopping with 54 MAY, 2013

grew up, I became more of an outdoor person, going on vacations, travelling, performing adventurous activities and lot more. Football, cricket, hanging out with friends, rock music are just what I love and are major part of my life. I am a very big foodie, especially food made by mom. Shopping with my mom is a thing, which I can do it for a whole day, I always enjoy my mom’s company, for everything we do. I just finished my studies and have joined our family business and planning for MBA in near future. How has the journey of motherhood been? My journey as a mother has always been very beautiful, there are always ups and downs in one’s life, it was the same with my life, there were times when Ronak was a kid and I had to leave all my work for him and come running back to him, he has always been the most important part of my life, when he grew up he stood beside me in every possible way and my other son Vidhan Bokadia is a darling to me, he keeps making me smile with his

The moments you cherish with your son - I would say I have many wonderful memories with my elder son, but the most adorable one was, when he was born, I still remember when I got to hold him in my arms for first time, he was like an angel in our lives. During my childhood my father was very strict with us, but when I saw him playing with my son just like a child, It was very emotional but happy moment. One special memory with your mom - I spend most of my time with mom, she has always supported me in everything and I make sure I never let her down. It was during 2010 when I was the Chairperson of an organization called JCI, I was just 17 or 18 that time, it wasn’t easy for a person of such an age to handle members, who are very much older and mature than you, she just told me one thing- Be strong in what you think, be strong at what you say, be strong in what you do. These words were engraved in my mind and has helped me again and aging at different situations in my life. One other time was when I was having my 12th boards and our national president of JCI was coming to Hyderabad on his visit to city, I had exam pressure so decided not to organize the event but then on the event day my friend called me up and asked me to come to a nearby hotel for ‘Our’ event, I was shocked because I didn’t organize any event. I rushed to the hotel and found my mom there who organized a wonderful event called “Go Green”. With her great support I was awarded as the outstanding Chairperson of India. When I was in 7th or 8th standard I had a bet with my siblings that when I have a son / daughter, and when he is grown up, I will look as young and energetic as I could and today I am happy because everyone congratulates me on achieving that goal, today me and my son hangout and are just like friends, and I am sure when people look at us, they would see friends and not a mother and son. Ronak - All my life I have been pampered and

We take a lot of vacations, we go for shopping, watch movies ,cricket together, the best part about watching movies with her is, she enjoys action movies, so it’s a great company to watch movies with. She understands me more than I do myself, I believe to share each and every part of my life with her, she always stands with me in my ups and downs, and I don’t feel even a bit panicky to say, I’ve been more of a mama’s boy. One lesson your mom has taught you - My mom not only taught me how to live, but also how to deal with life, she always told me life will always knock you down but it’s for you to decide whether to get up and fight back or stay down and give up, but I never gave up. She always gives me a positive energy when she is around and that positive attitude has become a part of me now. I can share a lot of stuff, my problems, my happiness, my sadness. I would say if I get a chance to have a re-birth I would happily want her to be mom. Being Mothers Day her son proudly shares everything his mother has achieved till date. In the year 2010 she was the outstanding new Jaycee nationally and she was awarded by national president of JCI India, she was one of the founder members of club called JIYO ZINDAGI. The aim of the club was to support down trodden students and provide them education. She was also in the board of directors of Sthanak Vasi Jain Sanstha. In the year 2011 she was awarded in beauty contest of JCI Zone 12.

In 2012 she was elected as the 1st lady president of JCI HYDERABD DECCAN. She has constructed an old age home at Karwan in the year 2012 and she takes care of it very well. She has been awarded many awards by Jain Seva Sangh too.

Adele named Richest Musician under 30 in The UK and Ireland Adele is rolling in the dough! The 24-year-old mom is officially the richest musician under 30 in UK and Ireland, according to the Sunday Times Rich List. The “Skyfall” singer beat out the likes of fellow multi-millionaires Cheryl Cole, Leona Lewis, Florence Welch, Jessie J and others. She leads the pack with a fortune of £30 million, up from £20 million in 2012. And she’s in the lead by a long shot. Cheryl Cole is the second richest of that age bracket in the region, with £14 million to her name, and Leona Lewis— who launched her career by winning the third series of The X Factor— came in third place with £12 million, the same amount she had last year. Following the success of Adele’s second album, 21, which sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, we can’t say we’re surprised about the star’s major money boost in just 12 months. Now that Adele is busy juggling her career and motherhood, we’re eager to see if she can continue her success and top the chart next year!

Also making the cut this year are The Voice judge Christina Aguilera, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston, and Justin Timberlake. As is the custom, each celeb on the list has a laudatory blurb written about them by another celeb. Jennifer Lawrence’s description was written by Oscar winner Jodie Foster, who praises J-Law for being a “hoot” and a “gem with a killer stare.” That stare certainly comes in handy when she fights people to the death as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games films. Girls star and creator Lena Dunham made the cut this year, as did Lincoln director Steven Spielberg, sitcom star Mindy Kaling, and President Obama. 60 MAY, 2013

Claire Danes Spends $6.8 Million on GORGEOUS West Village Home!! Claire Danes, leading lady of the Showtime hit Homeland, recently made a HUGE purchase — a new home for her new family of three. Claire and her husband, Hugh Dancy, decided that a $6.8 million townhouse in Manhattan’s West Village was the perfect nesting ground to raise their newborn son, Cyrus Michael Christopher. The fivebedroom home is four-stories high and features a bright, stylish living area with plenty of outdoor space. The place also includes a courtyard, a terrace, a library, a roof garden, stunning views, an open plan kitchen, and pretty much everything a dream home would EVER contain. Claire sold her Soho home in November to make way for this bigger-and-better model. We’re so happy for Danes and her family and hope she’s enjoying the new place!

Avril Lavigne Talks All-Out Wedding On ‘Chelsea Lately’

Avril Lavigne is gearing up for her second wedding, and this time around she plans to do it right. The 28-year-old singer told Chelsea Handler that she’s going to have an over-the-top wedding for her trip back down the aisle with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger. “I know you were married once, and that didn’t work out, obviously,” Handler said on Chelsea Lately. It didn’t work out, Lavigne agreed, referring to her marriage to Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley from 2006 to 2010. But it was great . Apparently I’m the marrying kind. And she’s also the wedding planning kind. I’m gonna go all out this time, Lavigne told Handler. There’s going to be a theme. I want to have a lot of fun with it and go kinda nuts this time. What kind of theme? The late-night host asked. The theme is the wedding. What other theme do you need? Like crazy attire and colors, the Complicated singer explained, without wanting to give too much away. Lavigne and Kroeger, 38, met in the recording studio last summer and bonded over the fact that they’re both Canadian and love drinking beer. Lavigne joked, we have a lot in common, she said.

Tanuj Virwani, new boy in B-town

Priyanka Chopra is one angry woman these days. Buzz is that the actress was not on the ‘Gunday’ directors mind and that she was recommended for the lead role by none other than her cousin Parineeti Chopra. According to sources, “Parineeti, was the one who recommended Priyanka for the lead role in the production house’s next, Gunday, opposite Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh.” The source added, “Parineeti is like the baby at YRF. Everyone there loves her and she’s like family. She has worked there even before YRF launched her in Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl (2011).”This didn’t go down well with the former Miss World, considering the fact that she is already a big star in Bollywood and that she needs no recommendation for films. The source explains further, “When they began searching for the female lead in Gunday, a lot of discussions took place at the YRF office. They wanted a girl who could pull off a tough role with a lot of ease. That’s when Parineeti stepped in and suggested that they should consider Priyanka for the role.”Adds the source, “When Parineeti suggested Priyanka’s name, there was no second thought. In fact, everyone at YRF was happy that Priyanka was selected as she suits the role perfectly. They were also glad that Parineeti suggested it.”

The promotional campaign is already being planned and promises to create buzz around the romantic film. In his first film, Tanuj Virwani, Rati Agnihotri’s son will be seen romancing the former beauty queen Neha Hinge.

Ranbir Kapoor’s pranks Kalki Koechlin

Salman Khan’s Wardrobe Malfunction

Most of our Bollywood actors are known to be mischievous and are quite good at playing pranks on the sets of their movies. And our Ranbir Kapoor is no exception. He is known to be pain for the co-stars with the pranks that he plays. But recently his pranks have been facing ire of everybody. “A song sequence required Kalki and Aditya Roy Kapoor to drink from shot glasses. As is the usual norm, water was poured into the glasses. But Ranbir decided to replace the water with actual vodka. Both his co-stars were left quite shocked.” said one of our sources. All of the actors laughed about it but the director Ayan Mukherjee was left annoyed. The things went really bad went, when Ranbir had to apply a small amount of turmeric paste on Kalki’s face. But instead of applying a little paste on her face for the shot , he went on covered her whole face with turmeric paste. To which Kalki’s sensitive skin reacted very badly. She had rashes all over her face for 2 days. The whole unit had to wait for 3 days for the rashes to go away and resume the shoot.

B-town’s Dabangg superstar, Salman Khan, had an awkward moment on the sets of Sohail Khan’s ‘Mental’ recently. The actor was shooting an action sequence at the ND studio, when he suffered a wardrobe malfunction. However, Salman, being the man he is, continued with the job at hand without stopping the shoot. It is understood that, a huge set was created, which looked like a busy road, and the scene involved many bikes and cars. Salman had an action scene where he was on a bike, and while doing this action scene his trousers accidently nipped, exposing his thigh. He initially didn’t realize what had happened. There were more than 300 people on the sets, and it was rather awkward for them—no one knew how to tell Salman about the wardrobe malfunction. However, when the actor was told about this, his handling of the situation took everybody by surprise. He refused to waste time by calling for a break to change into a pair of trousers and instead shot in the torn one till the pack-up was announced. Sohail Khan’s ‘Mental’ along with Salman Khan features Yash Tonk, Ashmit Patel, Sana Khan and Daisy Shah. MAY, 2013 61

Force India are a better team now: Vijay Mallya Shanghai: Sahara Force India do not depend now just on wet weather conditions to upset the big teams as the car is competitive enough in all conditions, team principal Vijay Mallya asserted. Going into Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix, Force India are fifth in the constructors standings, behind Mercedes and ahead of Sauber and McLaren. Mallya said his team’s assessment in comparison with the rivals can be done better after races in China and Bahrain. “China has always produced spectacular races and its not uncommon to experience some wet weather, but we know that both our drivers and the VJM06 are comfortable in all conditions. In the past we used to hope for rain as our only chance to upset the front-runners, but now we are more competitive in all conditions,” Mallya said. “The next two weekends, with races in China and Bahrain, will put us in a position to see where we really stand in comparison with our rivals, he added. Paul di Resta said it is still early part of the season, so team’s evaluation should be delayed. “It is important not to get carried away and to keep doing our job at each race. We appear to be in a good position at the moment, but no one can say where we will be compared to our rivals after the next two races,” the Scot said. ”We know McLaren is a very strong team and they will develop well, so all we can do is continue pushing hard to try and stay ahead of them. We have been doing a good job so far, better than many people expected but there s a long way to go,” he added. Adrian Sutil, the second driver, was hopeful of delivering a good result on Sunday. “The layout is not too different to Sepang, so it should suit us again and I hope we can be strong there. The other teams will not stand still so we need to keep pushing hard and keep up this momentum,” the German said.

Britain’s most successful FIFA set for $5 billion World Cup windfall Olympian Hoy to retire EDINBURGH - Britain’s six time Olympic gold medalist Chris Hoy on Thursday announced his retirement from cycling at the age of 37. Hoy, who was born in Edinburgh, won two events at London 2012 Olympic Games and also secured 11 world titles during a glittering 19-year career. Hoy made the announcement at Murrayfield Stadium in the capital of Scotland, noting that he would not attend the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow although the motivation was still there for him to go on to compete.”It is not a decision that I took easily or lightly but I know it is the right decision. Being objective, I got every last drop out in London,” said Hoy. He noted that the decision was made literally down to whether I can do it or not and did not want to just make up numbers at the Commonwealth Games next year. Hoy will act as an ambassador for the Commonwealth Games, where the track cycling will take place at a velodrome named after him. Commenting on Hoy’s retirement, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond said “Sir Chris Hoy is Scotland’s greatest ever Olympian and one of the best sportsmen these islands have ever seen. He is a true sporting legend of whom the whole of Scotland is justifiably proud and whose achievements are unparalleled. As well as his six Olympic gold medals and numerous other championships, the impact he has had on the sport of cycling is immense.”

Rio de Janeiro, March 25 (IANS) The 2014 World Cup in Brazil is set to provide a record $5 billion windfall for FIFA, according to audit and consultancy firm BDO. The figure represents a 36 percent rise on the $3.655 billion made at the last World Cup in South Africa and is 110 percent higher than the $2.345 billion earned at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. According to BDO, revenue from television rights and soaring sponsorship demand based on the tournament’s exclusivity provided the catalyst for the World Cup’s rise in profitability. “The World Cup market continues to grow and the likelihood is that the trend will continue at the following World Cups in Russia (2018) and Qatar (2022),” BDO spokesperson Pedro Daniel said. “Television networks that win the rights to broadcast the event, pay a fortune but it is very good business due to the money they make from publicity.” Daniel estimates the event will contribute to a one percent rise in Brazil’s 2014 Gross Domestic Product. Prize money for the tournament has also risen by a third since 2010, with the 2014 champions set to take home $40 million, according to FIFA.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

‘Ek Thi Daayan’ ‘Ek Thi Daayan’ revolves round the life of Bobo (Emraan Hashmi), a renowned magician, whose only support system is his ladylove Tamara (Huma Qureshi). They make a blissful couple who decide to adopt an orphan – Zuben. Bobo’s life is almost close to perfect, until he is haunted by a Daayan. He seeks the help of a hypnotist, Dr Palit, to help himself unravel mysteries of his past and to have a rendezvous with the eerie side of his life. And that is when he is reminded of his sister, father (Pawan Malhotra) and step-mother Diana (Konkona Sen Sharma). In a state of hypnosis, Bobo remembers his passion for witchcraft and various other incidents that lead to a spooky revelation. The Art Direction team has done a commendable job by giving a visual representation to their eerie side of their creativity. However, the story fails to substantiate the emergence of a Daayan in Bobo’s life and the subsequent happenings. The film could have been a lot different had the makers opted for an unconventional way of recreating witchcraft and supernatural presence on celluloid. Though certain sequences send shivers down your spine, the rest fail to grip your senses. The Lunar eclipse, the leap year, the screeching sounds of the daayan and the constant projection of a lizard are all too jumbled up and intend to forcefully create a sense of claustrophobia. Overall, the film hasn’t been able to live up to the hype that had been created all along. Olympus Has Fallen Olympus Has Fallen is a rough, tough but tension-free gun fest. Around halfway through the action film Olympus Has Fallen, Gerard Butler’s all-American secret service agent beats a North Korean terrorist to death with an iron bust of Abraham Lincoln. The film does not have a light touch with the geopolitical symbolism, or indeed much else: foes of freedom are sworn at, gunned down and knifed in the skull, while we sporadically cut away to a bullet-riddled Old Glory, flapping proudly in slow motion film. The premise: a mob of Korean goons storms the White House and kidnaps the US President, played by the far-too-young Aaron Eckhart. The bad guys are led by a man called Kang (Rick Yune), who demands that all Western forces withdraw from the Korean peninsula, and also has big plans for the US nuclear arsenal. Enter Butler as the President’s faithful servant, who scampers through the front door and raises starspangled hell.

NH4 NH4 is a Telugu,Tamil bilingual romantic thriller film directed by debutant Manimaran. The film features Siddharth and newcomer Ashrita Shetty in the lead roles. The story takes place in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The film’s soundtrack and background score were composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar. The film is a love entertainer with thrilling action elements. The story revolves around a thrilling incident that happened on a national highway and the film will have many twists The female lead of the film, Ashritha Shetty looks beautiful.
