WHATS NEW

SLY TECH A bust workspace remodeled into a Speakeasy Bar by three young entrepreneurs turned risk takers/dreamers. Throbbing and thriving behind a nondescript looking reception area – a space to give that devil may care attitude and letting loose the inner sly in you. The interiors are full of urban graffiti, brick walls and unmissable God Father Movie inspired high Chair, it’s like an IT guy’s dream of turning office into bar. It’s a perfect place for techies (and others) who needs to let loose from their stressful workday. A table tennis board, a section with comic books, ranging from Archie Comics, Asterix series, games such as Monopoly and Jenga make your waiting for food and drinks worthwhile. Opening with ‘Mr.Miyagi’- an orange marmalade with triple sec, and shaken served in a martini glass top above a glass full if dry ice, giving bit a Smokey effect, for starters it was impressive, next came Lychee Rose Martini where typical martini vodka was mixed with lychee juice and also with dash of rose petals and syrup. Coming to food, prices are very pocket friendly and options are endless. The menu has an array of grubs to enjoy with drinks. However our favorites were, ‘Fish pointing Fingers’ served with chili garlic mayo was a crispy delight, ‘C80s Jalapeno & Cheese peppers’ was mouthwateringly cheesy, ‘Dharamsala Chicken Momos’ with tangy chili sauce was on point with flavors. The ‘Trainee’s Kolkata Jhal Muri ‘ was close to authentic, amidst trying all the dishes, this particular dish was by my side till the very end. ‘SF BBQ chicken Wings’ were glazed to perfection, a definite must try. Last but not the least‘Chili Cheese Toast’ crisp and you just cannot go wrong on this simple yet delicious dish. Ending on a sweet note- spoiler, they have only one dessert on the menu- ‘Sly Sundae’ which is alcohol infused’ Vodka soaked brownie served with vanilla ice cream and coffee sauce. Location: Ground Floor, Western Pearl Building, Kondapur, Ph: 040 33194183

Genuine Broaster Chicken Broasting is a unique cooking method that takes in the principles of a pressure cooker and a deep fryer into one process. The result? Great in quality, flavor and cooking. Besides their chicken retains more meat moisture and utilizes much lesser oil than open fryer. 36 countries and counting, it has now come to Hyderabad and is definitely a place that doesn’t need a weekend to visit. The old school charm, warm exteriors, excellent attention to detailing- from lamps in biker helmets to quirky cartoons & quotes on the wall, gunny bags placed along the ceiling to old school seating arrangements which comprises of comfortable couches, wooden chairs, this place is all fun and food. The menu has ample options for vegetarians too, apart from their signature Boasters Chicken, which we found interesting. Star in starters are ‘Firangi Palak Paneer Dip’ cheesy dip with crispy toast and ‘Boasters Platter’ a 6 Piece platter that includes ‘The Legendary Broaster Chicken’, ‘The Happy Fried Chicken’ and ‘The Hot Masala Chicken’ that tasted incredible with the curry mango jalepeno dip, harissa and Thai sweet chilli dip, the chicken was juicy with an absolutely dry and non-oily coating. ‘Thai Paneer Cigars’‘Thai Chicken Strips’ and ‘Pepper Chicken Sticks’ served with dips are great conversation partners. In beverages the highlight are definitely ‘Chul Bul’ and ‘Bul Bul’ both soda based drinks with masala mixed in it. For caffeine lovers ‘Palang Tod’ is a must try, it is the virgin avatar of Jager Bomb. ‘Smoked BBQ Franchos’ i.e. crispy fries deliciously mixed with BBQ glaze, onions, and jalapenos. The ‘Lamb Rogan Josh Burger’ that looks beautiful for its red buns, is messy but a MUST TRY. The non-veg ‘Ghotala Khichdi’ the lamb chunks, chicken keema and fried egg pieces really took that khichdi to another level, and it was unexpectedly good. The ‘Chocolate Samosa with Mango Ice Cream’ servedwas good for the nutty feel and of course the chocolate filling. ‘Gulkand Muffin is Chef’s’ is Moist Mawa Cake with Gulkand bang in the middle. This is a dessert even for those who are naturally not attracted to sweet dishes. Location: Road No. 10, Co - op House Building Society, Jubilee Hills. Ph: 040 23550049 16 MARCH, 2017 - TULIP

Something about a person that really catches your eye, which is really distinct and attracts you. Not only the physical beauty but inner too, that reflects from your persona. That is beauty to me. Share your first ever experience with makeup? I was 14 years old and my first ever experience was when I did a photoshoot and Bharat Godambe had done my makeup, I could not recognize myself because I had no clue so many products go into applying makeup. I felt I have become a different person all together. The second shoot was with Mickey Contractor, these two were the first people I ever worked with. What do you do in your leisure time to unwind yourself? Music is something that really helps me to unwind. SPECIAL

tells us everything!

Undoubtedly, the best makeup artist in the business! We talk to our most favorite Elton Fernandez and he tells us all that you want to know about makeup, techniques, products and life.

T

Tell us how do you describe yourself as an individual? Not something what people have been seeing but how would you describe yourself? I am very hard working and ambitious, they call me gutter mouth because I have a very bad sense of humor and I have a skill which is to take anything, be it anything about mom, dad, hope, lunch, dinner be it anything I can make it about sex, that’s why they call me that. And I live that, I don’t fight it and I like style and grooming. So how many years has it been, in this field? It’s been about fourteen and a half years. If you just had to conclude it very briefly, how would you say that the journey has been so far? Worthwhile, incredible, life has been great. Are you single? I am dating a wonderful man since 9 months, but I am still availableit’s a consensual non monogamous relationship, so we agree that love doesn’t have to be that you constantly need to protect. It just stays anyway. What do you enjoy the most about your work? Do you enjoy the fashion show? Do u enjoy styling people? It’s a known fact that the entertainment or the beauty of this industry matures you at a pace that is 10 times faster than regular, because you interact with different kinds of people and these are all people fluctuating at a higher frequency, they are just more evolved in the way they live, they work so that experience and exchange of knowledge and idea is what I enjoy. We personally call you something who is more than a makeup icon, an influencer, you have your own social media, youtube channel and like you said you are very open about topics, so what do you say about being an influencer as I feel you kind of motivate people, you were there like an idol, where people can actually look up to you. I think like a child, You know I have said this in some interview also that the two things that I wished for where I would really kneel down and pray; one would be have a daughter, I don’t know why but as a child I knew that I would want to grow up and have a daughter and not a son and I knew that I would want her to be the women that would be inspirational and strong. And the second thing that I wanted was to be

fairer and taller that’s because people made me feel that brown is not nice and I was the darkest member of my family and my grandmother for some reason couldn’t take it. She used to call me blacky, which I thought was so rude. You know when you are a child it may be funny but when you grow up with that insecurity where all my cousins had light skin, light hair and I am dark but today I feel like I need to be the champion of my own cause because I have learned a lot myself. Especially, being in south India, I may have spent only my adult life here as a post teenage life but I still feel like I am a south Indian than anything else because of the enthnicity and also because of being gay and being open about it. I had a time when it was very difficult. I had straight friends in college and saw them clear befriending me, breaking friendship because they didn’t want to be friends with a gay guy. So, it’s important for me to be the champion I am today. Do you think that peer pressure with time has increased for the kinds today? No! It’s gotten easier I say. My gay friends Bombay, of course these are more urban evolved cities, make no mistake that we are a minority and larger part of this country takes it as a harder truth, I don’t know what but they have to live but for the urban crowd that I am exposed to, my friends and their life is so much easier than I had. They have supporting straight friends; they have friends who work with them with pride so I never had that. The choice to wear makeup and be happy, wear what make you happy, wear a color that makes you happy, wear shoes that make you happy. TULIP - MARCH, 2017 25

SPECIAL Do you believe in following trends? No! I believe in merging which means, I take what appeals to me of a certain trend and apply it in some form. The application doesn’t need to be in some form of exact visual replica, it can be an aesthetic application like Sabyasachi has aesthetical; I don’t have to take his embroidery and put on my clothes to get the Sabyasachi vibe. The moment I am sophisticated and it’s very dignified and is very minimalistic while still being in touch indulgent - that. That for me is aesthetic. But do you think that sometimes it’s very bizarre for common people to follow the trends? Like there are some trends that they follow on the ramp, on the magazine cover but for a common person don’t you think it’s get a little bizarre to follow? I don’t think that trends are meant to be applied blindly and they are not meant to be followed because these are somebody else’s ideas. You should have your own. For example, people in the South India love bling and kitsch stuff, it’s not my personal aesthetic but I like it when laxmi Manchu wears it; she is so kitsch because that’s who she is and you see her shinning only when you see her in that bling studded phone and everything; its beautiful. There is more inclusion of everything that you understand and there is no sort of judgment. If you are going to come up with blue lips I am not going to judge you because I won’t wear blue or maybe I would, I don’t know. So, if makes you happy and is not getting into other peoples way then it’s okay. What is the biggest challenge you faced so far? We live in a number driven world and I find it hard accumulating these numbers being out and proud as a gay in a country like India. So, every time I post something that’s homosexual or even remotely sexual for that matter, I will lose about 100 followers. For example, this morning, I posted a pride picture on instagram supporting gay pride as the pride is today and I am sad that I can’t attend the pride. My followers dropped from 36.7 to 36.6. So, I know that people are just close minded and even on YouTube for that matter getting numbers is bit difficult because I think I am a man. I am not somebody sitting in my bedroom and painting my face, I am doing it in a professional way so, I think it’s difficult. If I was a pretty girl, I would have more followers. Now, that is something I don’t understand. What inspired you to start your own youtube channel? I was actually shooting with my friends Miss Malini and for a little video thing that she wanted me to do for and then she said you are so nice on video why don’t you it and I was like okay let me think and because I love teaching, sharing my knowledge and I don’t feel the need to hide and I like to share everything because I love teaching and I started to enjoy from past three years being on camera. Again it comes from owning who you are and being confident and showing that it’s your greatest way of influencing others. 26 MARCH, 2017 - TULIP

Today social media has given platform to so many others like we see today. People who are not even professional artists have their presence on this kind of platform. What is your opinion, do you think it’s good? Yeah absolutely, at the end of the day everybody either it is a aam aadmi at the streets, sitting in some hut in village or Aishwariya Rai, everybody wants to be noticed and heard and opinions are important and if this gives somebody purpose and makes them feel heard it’s great. All opinions matter not just the nice ones. Today’s women are busier than ever. So, what according to you is the way from going from morning to evening? The beauty of Indian women is brown skin and a brown canvas goes with anything, any color. Be it brown eyes, black hair, dark brows, dark lashes so any color would go well. We can put brown eye shadow or blue eye shadow, anything goes well. We are not limited as how black skin may be limited and many things won’t show up. Black people can wear bold end colors - they can wear solid pigments and look incredible. But, we can wear any color so I recommend Indian women to ditch their black kajal and go for colored kajal in the day; like you wear purple, brown, and plum and in the evening load up a bit. Like you have done wing liner and you have done it in black which is great but what if you did it with a blue going into a black or vice-versa or a blue under a black and in the night follow it on the underside and you can add color, a kajal- a thick Shenaz Hussain like line - this is the easiest way. Some trends are a bit too much for an average women like age wise, especially style conscious women but also women who want to be tip top. So, what’s that one makeup tip you would want to give to such kind of women? My style of working is “the lesser they need the better”. Now, it’s not even a question about needing, it’s about wanting. They don’t need anything. I can walk out of my room in a bathrobe and still be the same person because I worked on me from the inside essentially. So, from the outside try taking as little as support you need because that is empowerment. A women doesn’t need to be a pretty Barbie to be liked. She doesn’t need that. She can just have a great attitude but having said that, nothing brightens the eyes nor makes them alert than a mascara, so, a lash curler before mascara is the catch. Own what you have. Do you think Indians today are being more open to experimenting? As you travel so much more, do you think people are ready to experiment? Yes, people like the logic behind hearing something. So, ideally give them the reason why you want it and if they like it, great, if it doesn’t then it doesn’t.

Tips & Tricks Tell us few things that every girl or woman should have, like a go-to kit. I would say get a great skin care as your ultimate makeup is more to do with your prep and hydration that your skin receives than just foundation or concealer. So, I would say a hydrating gel by organic harvest. It is a moisturizer in gel form, it also is a little sticky which works for me and helps me stick my make up better. I also like the sunscreen gel again from organic harvest. The other would be a SPF15 which is good for dark skin. in SPF people think that the higher the number the more the protection, that’s false. The lighter the number the more it applies to darker skin. An SPF15 or 20 is really perfect for someone who is really dark. If you are light skinned like a Kashmiri, then, you would need a SPF 20. Then, I would use a foundation that is quick and economical like Maybelline fits me, or something that I don’t think is launched here that is dream velvet, the texture is cooling but has a nice velvety texture. It’s not powdery and then I would say get a lip and cheek stain; any company brings the rawness under the eyes and then an eyelash curler and a mascara and if you like something light then use a light one but if you want something dramatic then lash sensational mascara by Maybelline is nice and then use a brow pencil or a powder, just to fill in the gaps. I would like to keep one or two colored lipsticks which are long wearing, so, that you don’t have to give the touch up and one that is boom pop-up color like a bold red or a bold pink or orange, on darker skin orange looks good and I love Maybelline. A gloss maybe, I like glosses it’s fun and not to forget a bronzer and a highlighter. Use a bronzer to take in sun and shadow. People don’t understand that shadow is as important as light. So, get shadow and get highlighter and push in certain areas of your face. Highlighter adds the glow for instagram, as we are the insta generation!

SPECIAL I love New York, Bombay and Rajasthan. I like Rajasthan the most. I just think it’s so India, I love ethnic oxidized jewellery. If you would like to collaborate with someone to come with your own make up line who would it be? I would love to collaborate with Maybelline, I love the team. They are young and driving. They take my feedback on different products. The foreign team is also nice. But, I would like to build a brand of my own and see my name on the box. So, what would be your signature for that say? A bronzer that works as a highlighter for our skin. For me highlighter shouldn’t be something of whitish color; it can be pinky bronze stoned highlighter bronzer. Glow while you contour...! What is that one experience that has been really great; the one from that you learned the most from? I am really quick with my work, which is why I have people come back to me, respecting my craft more. They put a lot of intellect into me. I am like a painter background, I like having mistakes like on a bag there is embroidery that is machine done and hand done. Do you know the difference? Hand done embroidery has an era in it; the essence and I like my work to be like that hand done and not machine down; not so perfect. If two brows are different, I like it. If my lip liner is out of the line, I like it. I just don’t think women needs to be perfect, that’s my opinion. Everyone don’t need to be like this. Who is your all time favourite muse ? Kate Beckinsale, because I think she is a strong woman and her personality is so elastic. Look at the various hats she is wearing. She could be so many people while she is just Kate.

Tell us the brands that are good for Indian skin? Also how important is it to get the right shade of foundation? Women should try the foundation first on her jaw line, apply it there, rub it back and forth for few times and if it disappears, then it is the right one. If it is making you look fairer and you really have to make it rub hard then it is the wrong color. Don’t go for any unnecessary lighter shades lighter. All brands make shades now-a-days. You have worked with so many people, celebs so have you ever had that bizarre moment or any kind of moment when you were like - this needs to be fixed? Brows mostly because most of them are over grown or over scissors or over plucked that I would say to little grow up and add a little softness. I would say stop over grooming and open up the gap in between and don’t let it join. What is your personal style? It is definitely comfortable and a little out of place and I like no point when I am unsure of what I am wearing. I just like being bold and not being shy. You travel so much, what is your favorite vacation spot? TULIP - MARCH, 2017 27

CUISINE

Chef Picasso

Chef Olaf Niemeier- A master craftsman whose work is compared to Picasso’s paintings world-over. Owing to last year’s success, he’s back to Fusion 9 with new masterpieces for the connoisseurs of the art of FineDining. Chef Olaf is a master of fusion food, and intends for Hyderabadi’s to taste a class of international cuisine that will make you love world food as much as he does. ‘I always like being here, I like Indian food and my personal favorite is spicy food, chilies. Some people don’t understand that there is a difference between spicy food and food with right spice. It should not be burnt; it has to add to the taste instead of overpowering the flavors. Even at home when I cook for my wife and the food is not spicy, she thinks I am sick! She loves spicy food as well’ He likes to fuse ingredients but not his thought process; he might mince his food but not his words about any cuisine or recipe. Having travelled far and wide, his repertoire in fusion food makes diners wait in anticipation of what would come to the table. Talking about his affinity to fusion, Olaf goes to describe the journey of his travels, his discovery of ingredients and the constant wish to fuse varying ingredients with each other. Discovering a love for and an instant connect with spices made his culinary journey a remarkable one, “When I like two ingredients, my first thought is on the method and technique to mix them. However, I am cautious of not spoiling it, so I cook them separately in the flavors of my choice and then work to integrate them,” he describes. How would Olaf describe love for good cooking? It is like the way you love your partner. Patience, understanding, gentleness and eagerness to be with him/her. If a relationship is like a duty, the experience isn’t worth talking about; the same goes with the heart and soul in the kitchen. How is it coming back? I am here for the third time now; first time I was here for their 10th anniversary, that’s where we started the relationship. The chef who happens to be a friend as well called me and asked If I could come to fusion 9 and do a fusion promotion. As I have specialized in fusion cuisine in Germany, I said, why not and that’s when I came for the first time. I was here in 2012 for the second time and then 2013. Now, it’s nice to be back with some new items. What according to you is the best of Fusion food? Fusion is to mix spices or food of different countries, like i have ravioli on the menu which is Italian and the source is Japanese; so this is fusion for me. It has mix and match, it’s like a marriage; it has to combine together, you cannot mix everything just because of fusion. Sometimes, there can be confusion too. So, you have to think about it and have to taste it and see if it fits in or doesn’t fit. Like Bali risotto is a German thing but the meat is Korean but they fit in together. You keep travelling so much with your work and workshops, which according to you is the most underrated city in terms of food? Singapore is very good; India is great because of its various spices as I don’t see any other country where you have so many spices. It depends on what you are looking for. What is your favorite? Japanese, because they have different spices and that’s what I like. There is so much we can do with Japanese; we can add Indian and Chinese spices. I always take inspiration from chefs I work with and give it a twist with my own skills. I always say there is nothing new in the world, it’s already been there and if somebody tells me that I have designed this, I say it’s not right as it has been there before, you only put your own touch to it, and present it. That is what fusion is to me, when I see something and I think about 34 MARCH, 2017 - TULIP

it, what you can do with it, how you can change it a little bit. I see something from other chef’s what are they doing and think it is a good idea and you can introduce this in some other dishes. I would not like to say that I designed the plate myself because it has been there before, just in some other way. You have always described your food as a piece of art; and even named as Chef Picasso, tell us more on that. I got this title form a food channel, chef Picasso is an artist and my food is art that you can eat- I got this from an American food writer in Taiwan. So, one night, we were eating and having few drinks. He asked me ‘what do you call your food?’ We tried a lot of names, but Picasso found perfectly suited. Picasso is modern and crazy, he agreed because he saw my place, it’s all colorful and some items you don’t expect are on the plate. He said, it fits you and then the next day he puts it in the paper that Chef Olaf is being called Chef Picasso, so this is how it got together. As you travel so much, how do u balance with the taste palette of the people with the city that you are working in? The good part is that I have lived in all these countries for 2-3 years, so, I know the palette of the people there and if I go for the first time, I have to go to the restaurants and see what are they cooking there and what they are doing. As I lived in China, Taiwan and India, I know all the tastes and the good part is we are doing something new from what we did few years ago. There is a cooking school too and that’s one of the reasons why I am here. We are starting form the next week on ‘F9 Test Kitchen’. Do you cook at home as well? I cook every day, my wife has nothing to do with the kitchen, she is only allowed in the kitchen to pick up the food and then she has to go. What do you like to cook? Anything Asian food- Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese because in Germany you don’t get very nice Asian food.

- As told to Satpreet Kaur

WELLNESS

Correlation with Diabetes and Obesity

Dr. Priyanka Bakshi chats with us about diabetes and obesity. The single best predictor of type 2 diabetes is overweight or obesity. Almost 90% of people living with type 2 diabetes are overweight or have obesity. People who are overweight or have obesity have added pressure on their body’s ability to use insulin to properly control blood sugar levels, and are therefore more likely to develop diabetes. The number of diabetes cases among adults increased by a third during the 1990s, and additional increases are expected. This rapid increase in the occurrence of diabetes is mostly attributed to the growing prevalence of obesity in the United States Sugar is brown due to the addition of molasses during processing or may be brown following the first phase of processing before the refining process. Brown sugar containing molasses has higher water content than white sugar. 1 tablespoon of brown sugar contains 52 calories. 1 tablespoon of sugar contains 59.7 calories; in jaggery 57.45 calories and 1 tablespoon of honey contain 47.85 calories. Generally sweeteners, which are available in the market, contain zero calories. Are you diabetic or obese? For a diabetic person, it is better to avoid brown sugar, white sugar, honey, jaggery, maple syrup and corn syrupas well. For non- diabetic and obese people, honey is most preferable especially for weight loss.

It’s that time of the year again where you can turn into Avatar, Hulk, Gamora, Umbridge, Mystique or even a tropical bird. Nope, not time for comic con but Holi! Pick your favorite color and drench yourself in it, arm up with Holi ammo to get a playful twist of a comic avatar. Though it’ll sure be the first time you see Hulk with a Pichkari. But avengers or not it’s time for the ultimate color mania. This means there’ll be a dhol if you want the ‘rang barse’ feels and EMD music for the more contemporary souls. Flowers for the alternate hippies and good old gulal for those who want a rosy red blush from hairline to toes. There is something to suit everyone’s taste. Just let there be color. A kaleidoscope of color.

A

A Peek Into The Past About 5236 years ago, legend has it that a boy had once complained to his mother in jealousy of his dark complexion compared to that of a beautiful fair girl. Upon hearing this, the mother playfully suggested him to smear color on the girl’s face to change her complexion to any color he wanted. Of course this action is not advised in the present day but there was nothing that the charming Krishna couldn’t get away with. However you think Radha didn’t do anything? Girl power isn’t only recently popular! The Gopi’s of Barsana took it upon them to chase out Krishna and his friends with sticks; a playful tradition still followed in Barsana called Lathmar Holi. Smearing color on Radha’s cheeks is what commenced the long standing Holi festivities. And as tradition has it, Holi in Vraj starts on Vasant Panchmi and lasts for forty days! That’s right folks. No two-day bleak celebration like the rest of the world. It starts with tiny amounts of color sprinkled on each other, graduating into a constant color crescendo until the day of Holi where the streets are carpeted with color.

When we don’t settle for just one potato chip to make us happy, why stick to one type of Holi to make it happening? Albeit potato chips are bae, Holi does come only once a year! So, here are a few options to pick from, for this year – •

Good old gulal Holi – this Holi has colors, water, pink gulal, pichkari, rain dance, music and the works. With pedas and thandai of course. This is a Holi we’ve been playing since our childhood and although repeated each year by the majority, it is a fool proof way to have fun. So, nothing wrong with monotony and tradition, but those looking to try something new, read on.

Dry Holi – this is a Holi for those who don’t like to get too messy. Dry Holi can mean only Gulal or even just a myriad of plucked flower petals. Its pros include – easy to clean afterwards (place, thyself and thy clothes), water conservation and the advantage of not looking like a red faced baboon in all the pictures; which means picking an Instagram worthy Holi picture becomes easier.

One color Holi – if you’re playing Holi this year with a small group of family and friends at a private residence, it is more achievable. Playing only with one color will primarily mean it’s just more visually appealing amidst all the cacophony of customary colorful faces. This sure is one way of standing out.

Gaming Holi – bored of traditionally playing Holi? Or just plain too lazy to chase about and avenge your drenched self? And group of people just like you? We’ve got just the right amount of sit down fun for you. Give the traditional games a Holi spin like - Play a game of ‘never have i ever’ with thandai for a change. Charades with Holi song titles (no need to look further than Bollywood).

Organic Holi – while Holi is all fun and games, it is always good to

FEATURE

remember to take care of your skin, hair and the environment. It is easy to purchase organic/herbal colors within the city (Hyderabad goes Green) and can also be ordered online (Amazon.in). •

Paint balloon Holi – while most of us see to our Holi cravings via paintball the rest of the year, it’s a way to celebrate Holi too. You don’t need the Paintball guns and uniform for this – only balloon bombs filled with concentrated color mixtures. Armor is recommended for the easy to bruise.

Travel

You can make travel plans to the north and experience Barsana ki Holi, or Holi at Mathura and Vrindavan. Or venture to Goa to witness their Holi traditions called – Shigmo. Holi is one of the grandest festivals celebrated in Delhi as well. TULIP - MARCH, 2017 37

Holi Fashion

Shraddha Das wearing the perfect braid and accessories for holi celebration

What to wear this Holi? There is always an option of going with the traditional look, a white dress. But why go with the same old stuff when there is so much more to explore and try out? Outfit trends will bring a complete guide in this post as how to dress up for the Holi festival, what outfits to wear. We also recommend you to see how to dress up for carnival festival you can also get many ideas from that. If you are still keen on keeping the tradition and wearing white, how about mixing it up with your favorite color? Almost every color looks good with white, especially the bright ones like red, orange, blue, shocking pink. One of the most popular ones this year has been the combination of white and plum color. Apart from that, floral dresses also create a different and yet beautiful look for Holi. Obviously considering the occasion, avoid dresses you can get caught up in or which are hard to manage and go for the one you will be most comfortable in. The no brainer – This is a go to Holi attire, something you cannot go wrong with. A white shirt or kurta with denim bottoms or a colorful legging. Slip on some rubber chappals and silver or oxidized junk jewelry to give you some style while keeping it simple. Fashion savvy – One of the latest spring trends is stripes. But we can easily incorporate that with something lehariya in your outfit. An easy option would be to add a lehariya dupatta. And since most lehariyas come with a white combination, it’ll be easy to match it with the white kurta.

Island paradise – One of the pantone colors trending this year is light paradise blue. Sticking to light colored clothes, helps set off the Holi colors more brightly and hence an alternate option to white, is this blue. A light denim shirt dress for example incorporates the color blue and the dress shape lending the wearer comfort and style at the same time. Lazy-busy – If you’re too busy or mostly lazy to put together any of the above, it’s ok. It’s Holi, not the Grammy’s. I’m sure there are clothes you don’t love; it’s the time to show them the light of day. And don’t worry about not looking your trendiest, because at the end of the day everyone is going to look the same! Perfect Footwear for Holi Totally avoid wearing heals and find some comfortable waterproof shoes. The shoes can be in any style that you are comfortable in like slippers or sneakers as long as there isn’t a chance of slipping in them. If you are carrying a western look then obviously go for sneakers or pumps and for an eastern dress, go for slippers. Holi Make-up Idea Though there is a widely held concept that there’s no need for make-up on Holi since it gets spoiled anyway, this is not true. Make-up is more important on this day than any other function as it will help protect your skin from the dangerous chemicals in the colors. So, use water proof make-up, specially as a base and eye make-up, and don’t forget to apply sunscreen on your face and all visible body parts. Bold eyes will enhance your looks even after you have been covered in colors. It is also the perfect occasion to go for nail art, or if you don’t have time for that, how about wearing a different colored nail color on each nail for a change? Cute Hairstyle for Holi The best hairstyle for this occasion is definitely the ponytail. But if you are daring enough, try combining it with a braid. Also remember to apply some moisturizer or other products available in the market to protect your hair. If you want to be extra careful about your hair, you can even find a scarf or bandanna that goes with your dress. Accessories to Wear on Holi Don’t ever wear your precious or expensive jewelry on Holi as it might get ruined. Instead try going for the cheaper and yet funky jewelry available almost everywhere. If you are wearing a traditional dress, try some jhumkas as they seem to be made for the occasion and are available in so many eye catching designs and colors. For a western look you could go for bracelets, ear cuffs, rings or necklaces.

Recipe Your Favorite Thandai recipe: In a decade where our pace has to match to that of a snap story and our idea of health fits into a smoothie, it is hard to make time for authentic time consuming dishes and in this case beverages. While packet mixes for thandai are available locally, for those who like to indulge, here is a threestep-thandai recipe. Step 1 Grind together almonds, cashew nuts, pistachios, melon seeds and poppy seeds with a little milk to a fine paste. Bring milk to a boil in a pan. Add saffron and mix. Step 2 When the milk begins to boil, add sugar and simmer till the sugar melts. Grind green cardamoms, dried rose petals, cinnamon and black peppercorns to a fine powder. Step 3 Add the paste to the milk and mix well. Simmer for three to four minutes. Add the powdered masala to the milk and mix well. Chill the milk and serve. TULIP - MARCH, 2017 39

THEATRE IN HYDERABAD Drama is the specific mode of fiction represented in performance. INDIA is one of the few countries which can boast of an indigenous drama, unaffected by any foreign influence. Most critics agree that Hindu drama was neither a borrowing nor an imitation, but the product of native genius. Theatre, in dramatic arts, is an art concerned almost exclusively with live performances in which the action is precisely planned to create a coherent and significant sense of drama. Theatre stands alive and can never die; that experience cannot be replaced by anything viewed on a screen, in 3-D, or interactively. Here are few famous Drama theatres in Hyderabad you surely don’t want to miss.

SRI VENKATESWARA NATYA MANDALI (SURABHI)

Surabhi is a rare institution of family groups that leads nomadic life by performing dramas in villages. Surabhi has a track record of 127years. Most of the Surabhi plays are the compendiums from the Indian epics and mythologies like the Ramayana, Mahabharatha and Bhagavatha . There was a time that Surabhi troupes could tremendously survive all over Andhra Pradesh. The Surabhi theatre is unique in its style when compared to other theatre companies. It’s a genre on its own. Its visual and special effects makes it stand out from the rest. A lot of importance is given to the sets, lighting and special effects. How was this started? The legacy of Sri Venkateswara Natya Mandali (Surabhi) began in 1937 on Vinayakachaviti (Ganesh Chaturthi-the festival of Lord Ganesh), in a village called “GimidiPeta” of Srikakulam Dist., Andhra Pradesh. The couple, Smt. and Sri Rekandar Subhadramma and Chinna Venkat Rao founded the Venkateswara Natya Mandali. After the first generation, the organization was led by their sons Rekandar Dasaradhi Rao, then by Bhojaraju. And now, R.Nageswara Rao(Babji) is leading the organization. List of Dramas they perform Sri Krishna Leelalu : The exploits of little Krishna Jai PathalaBhairavi : The story of the folk legend ‘ThotaRamudu’ Lavakusa : The exploits of the twin princes – sons of Sri Rama BhaktaPrahlada : The story of great devotee Prahlada Maya Bazar : The tale of Gatotkacha, the demon king VeeraBrahmamgaricharitra : The story of the prophet and Astrologer VeeraBrahmam Balanagamma : The story of a wicked sorcerer ChandiPriya : The story of folk legend ChandiPriya Bheeshma : The Story of the Bheeshma from the epic Mahabharatha BasthiDevathaYadamma: The story of a woman with great virtue.

SUTRADHAR

FEATURE

Formally launched in 1996 with its Casting wing, we have seen many a milestones. Sutradhar, as it stands today - a Theatre Group, a Casting House and a Voice and Acting School all rolled into one – is an umbrella of numerous initiatives. Sutradhar is driven by the motivation of making sure that deserving talents are rightly recognized, nurtured & manifested. Having created a strong database of talented artists and counting, Sutradhar has become a hub of Actors, Voice Artistes, Scriptwriters, Translators, Directorial Crew, Technical Crew and many other portfolios. These associations have allowed Sutradhar to venture into production.

What is Sutradhar all about? Sutradhar is a Theatre group, Casting House, Production Company and a Voice & Acting School. It believes in honing and promoting Home-grown talent through workshops and theatre productions How did it all start? It started off as a company in 1996, and we had our first production in 1998. The workshops started in 1999. If there were no challenges we wouldn’t be what we are today. There weren’t proper spaces then, there aren’t many today also . But we persisted in the face of a lot of odds. Hyderabad was a growing city then, and not many were inclined towards theatre. There were of course a few committed to the craft, but the attendance of the audience was very, very poor. The press wasn’t very forthcoming for the kinds of plays we would do. They would focus more on the English plays or those that were played in a couple of 5-star hotels then. As the media monopoly slowly started to demolish with the advent of some more newspapers, theatre began to get noticed. Friends in the press too realized our never-say-die attitude, as we kept performing one good script after another. Our bane perhaps also was that our language would be either Hindi or Urdu, and thus it was all the more a challenge. Theater is a socialistic medium, and as far as we are concerned, there’s no VIP culture. No seat numbers either, first come first served. So, obviously, this didn’t make us any popular either. But people slowly started realizing the discipline that is required for theatre. Just around the same time, the city spread its arms to a huge workforce from all over the country, thanks to the blooming it sector; theatre has now got a completely new audience. What is Sutradhar specialist in? Theatre is what we do best, but sustaining that also results from our intensive acting workshops. The prospect here is trained not for acting but for imbibing life skills and behavioral aspects. A comprehensive Man cannot be a comprehensive Actor. Therefore our workshops are aimed at inculcating discipline, realizing the importance of time and team, how sensitive one needs to be to our surroundings to reflect that in

presenting the scripts through a performance – in short one is made aware of his Humane side. There are strenuous physical exercises, theatre games, imagination exercises, breathing exercises and endurance exercises too. We’ve a huge database of actors from all over, and cast regularly for feature films, television serials, ad films, documentaries etc. We also specialize in voice coaching and voice casting. What are the places where Sutradhar performs often? In Hyderabad, we’ve performed at every available and possible – even impossible – venues. We’ve learnt to adapt to our surroundings rather than be finicky about the space. RavindraBharati, Telugu University, SundarayyaVignana Kendra, Our Sacred Space, NIFT, The Gallery Cafe, and not to forget Lamakaan and so on. Across India, we’ve performed in centers like Prithvi – Mumbai, Bangalore, Bharat Bhavan - Bhopal, Jagriti – Bangalore, Padatik – Kolkata, Sriram Centre, Little Theatre Group – New Delhi, NCZCC – Allahabad, Natarani – Ahmedabad; and cities like Indore, Pune, Chennai, Udaipur. I even had the privilege of being invited by the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, and to London by another group for a performance there. We’ve been a part of Prestigious Festivals like Bharat Rang Mahotsav of the National School of Drama, BhilwaraNatyaPuraskar, RangSutra Festival of Performing Arts, Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Yatri, many more. Upcoming events Play: KanJoos MAKKHI CHOOSE, a hyderabadi adaptation of French playwright Moliere’s THE MISER Date: 24th March Venue: Lamakaan Date: 25th and 26th March Venue: Phoenix Arena

A Trip From Delhi to Corbett Tiger Reserve The “PLAN” was in the making for over two months. Ideally, it was to do something different, have a different experience -Set off as early as possible towards Binsar and find a suitable place to pitch tent and camp out for the night next to a roaring fire. The ghat section driving will leave you mesmerized, that’s a promise. As we journeyed, it looked certain that we will not be making it to Binsar that night. So, we started to lookout for a place to halt. We were in Uttaranchal which is a mountainous region and almost all available land by the roadsides was being terrace-farmed. Then, finally, we found a place by 6pm; it was getting dark already. We quickly set about gathering firewood and pitching the tent. Waking up in the hills to the crisp cheery chirpy morning is something one needs to experience. We came across beautiful valleys and pristine rivers, and what’s better than going and splashing around in those icy cold waters. Hence, we found a spot where we could all, (almost) safely; descend to the river, bathed followed by some tomfoolery. We reached Munsiyari by dusk and checked into the Uttaranchal Tourist Hotel; reasonably clean rooms and bathrooms. We had breakfast and headed off to meet another fixer; our primary reason for being here - The Khalia Top trek. We hired some quilts, a mule driver with two mules and came back to the hotel to pack some essentials for the trek. The trek started from Balati Bend which is at a distance of 8 KM from the Munsiyari town. The climb was adventurous and we reached a 20x20 piece of flat ground where we pitched our tent. In the meantime, our guide – Jinping, went about gathering firewood and had a roaring fire going in no time. This rejuvenated us. We were then off to Ramnagar and an awesome surprise awaited us. We got our accommodation inside the CORBETT TIGER RESERVE. Before that, we visited my hero and the legendary Man-eater Hunter, Jim Corbett’s Kaladhungi Winter home (which is now converted into a Museum dedicated to Corbett). The FRH we have booked into is called Mailani and is my favorite place to stay. It has only two rooms and built during the pre-independence times. We have to cook our food and a kitchen is provided for this. Our provisions bag was crying to be opened and looted again. We did a beautiful day-safari in our open top gypsy and reached Mailani by noon. We drove in the jeep for more safari time. An amazing trip thus came to an end. We were off to Delhi and then to our Home sweet Home – Secunderabad. Traveling to a new place every year is what keeps you going - New people… New tastes and Our Beautiful Country…! From a very young age Shubham Singhania has been attracted towards all that appealed to his senses, in terms of the beauty of creativeness and the application of the human mind in deciphering the correct spot to be hit in the minds of the people. “I have always been an admirer of good stationery, especially the diaries and books. This interest was the reason I designed four books with lined pages for myself. In my design school at Pune, I was taken by surprise after receiving unexpected reactions of appreciation for the design, quality and feel. Part of them from my classmates who insisted on buying one after learning that they would not get the same ones at any shop. After a while, there was a staggering amount of demand for it with offered prices that were unlooked-for. The design and working styles of MUJI and Moleskin, a Japanese and Italian brand respectively, have added to my inspiration. We are very excited for the times ahead as we have lot of new products in the pipeline and our customers would love to see MOOCH in categories they never expected. We have grown strong through Product design and we would like to showcase our immense hard work in different categories, let’s say ‘Home decor’. Who would have thought that a simple wooden stand would also be a show piece and a utility stand for sunglasses at the same time. Taking cues from those ideas, we work to provide utility to customers through design. Down the line, we are expanding tremendously at different stores all over the country. We are working hard to build a presence at major cities in our country. You will even find MOOCH products at the HOOZINC store at Hyderabad. We have a vision to change the way people approach to designs and sustaining that in the next few years would be our goal”, Shubham explains. Instagram @my.mooch Facebook : www.facebook.com/mymooch/

ENTERTAINMENT The reason for Surya’s Downfall

The last time Suriya film opened to shockingly poor numbers was 24. Now, Singam 3 too has opened to below par numbers. There is clearly no genre excuse. Also one can’t talk about release period as there has been no real big release in Tamil cinema for a long time now. One can again give lots of excuses, like delays and other issues, but at the core of it all is Telugu Film Industry the reason behind it? Suriya started planning films keeping Telugu market in the back of mind. Soon his subjects and release timings had to meet the TFI requirement. All of these meant Suriya kept losing ground locally. Today, he has reached a place where newer stars are replacing him locally. It might be difficult at this point but the solution to bounce back is simple. Make strong mass films rooted in Tamil. It would be ideal if they have universal appeal but that is not a necessary requirement. Or take a drastic approach and do a direct big mass movie in Telugu with Telugu director that can be released in Tamil. Whatever it may be the focus has to be to make films for one rooted community rather than for everyone and end up being neither here nor there.

Dimitrov, who captured his second title of the season on home ground in Sofia, had to dig deep, however, to see off Zverev who stunned world number one Andy Murray at the Australian Open last month. The 25-year-old Dimitrov improved to 15-1 on the season and will next face Denis Istomin, who beat Novak Djokovic in the second round in Melbourne at the season’s opening Grand Slam. Dimitrov, the fifth seed, took victory in just under two hours, firing his 11th ace for a match point and breaking on four of nine occasions.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

Jolly LLB Cast – Akshay Kumar, Annu Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Saurabh Shukla Just like most of Akshay Kumar’s recent movies, Jolly LLB was yet another success. Portrayed as the lawyer, more by succession than nature, Jolly is a novice who engages in petty crimes because he knows the loopholes of the law. His perky wife played by Huma Qureshi does justice to the character of Pushpa, the fashion savvy, wine loving wife. Subhash Kapoors knowledge and the team’s research shows through fantastically in the courtroom drama which is mainly highlighted in the second half of the movie. While Akshay Kumar shines, Annu Kapoor’s role becomes the perfect nemesis for him. The movie factually throws light on corruption and terrorism while getting the balance just right with timely comic reliefs; be it the underlying dark humor or outright hilarity. All in all, it is movie definitely worth watching.

The space between us Cast – Gary Oldman, Asa Butterfield, Carla Gugino, Britt Robertson The trailer gave hopes to many appearing to be the perfect science fiction-romance movie; however the movie failed to satisfy the science fiction quota and played to the tunes of the same old boy meets girl track. This could have been taken in stride had there been strong narratives, gripping plot and action and over all brilliant performances. However, this was not the case and the story of the first human born on Mars travelling to earth for the first time, could have been utilized in a far more sophisticated way. However, its main target seemed to be the romantic aspect to catch the teens and young adults on Valentine’s Day and proved to be predictable enough.

Singham 3 Singham 3 has been facing all sorts of troubles to see its release light. After being postponed for over three months now, the action entertainer has finally hit the screens. Narasimha (Suriya), who is quite popular as an aggressive cop is deputed to Mangalore to deal with a special case involving the murder of a police commissioner. Upon landing in Karnataka, Narasimha easily cracks the murder case but finds out that there is a dreaded mafia don called Vittal (Anoop Singh Thakur) behind all this. At the same time, Narasimha also finds out that Vittal is managing his nexus from Australia and is creating huge problems all over. Rest of the story is as to how Narasimha manages to nab the international criminal Vittal and where do Shruthi Haasan and Anushka feature in this entire set up. As always, one of the biggest assets of Singham series is the man Suriya himself. Even in the third installment, Suriya packs a punch and his performance will be loved by the fans and masses. Be it his fights, aggressive dialogue delivery and electrifying screen presence, Suriya holds the entire film with his impressive performance.

TAROT

Forecast For

March 2017

ARIES

March 21 - April 19 The Moon is about all that is unseen, all that is felt and in the shadows and unclear. It is about our intuition and our knowing. This is not the easiest of place for you action oriented, like to be in control Aries. Last month was much more do, do, do, which is your natural go to place. This month however is going to be about living in the feelings place. There are things that are or will be coming up that you may not want to deal with emotional tides that have been low, but now are picking up momentum and may come crashing in. It’s all okay. Remember life is an ebb and flow.

TAURUS

April 20 - May 20 The first hit I got when I saw the Justice card for you Taureans is that its time to let go of judging yourself and everyone around you so harshly. Justice is about checking all the facts and making a decision. Its not about being judge and jury. There is a call here to open mind your mind and expand out of seeing the world in black and white, aka good

or bad, right or wrong. There are so many points to stories we do not consider because we never inquire. We neglect to ask questions, see all sides of the story, get curious about what or why something happened.

GEMINI

May 21 - June 20 As if there were not already 500 things changing in your life my dear Gemini. Last month we had the Tower card which meant your whole world was turning upside down and you needed to go with the flow or hang on for dear life. The Death Card represents things needing to literally die. A lot of times those endings can feel pretty dramatic. There is a finality here, and I feel it is happening in probably more than one area of your life. The drama does not have to be of soap opera proportions however. What it does require is the acceptance that your old way of being, whether in relationship, with your work, or even just how you show up in the world, is no longer accessible. But sometimes we hang on to something way longer than we should putting that shit on life support and extending its life out however we can, when it really needs to just be dead and gone. Be gentle with yourself in this process.

TULIP - MARCH, 2017 77

78 MARCH, 2017 - TULIP

CANCER

June 21 - July 22 Being strong is not about being tough. Somewhere along the way dear Cancer you thought you had to have your guard up all of the time, that you had to fight in order to get what you really wanted. This card reminds us that vulnerability, softness, trusting that everything will be okay, is the most powerful way to get what we want actually. It may feel counter-intuitive to drop the walls in order to win the war, because you would be exposing yourself, however, you can influence someone much more by HOW you show up and not WHAT you do or WHAT you say. You have so much creativity and passion and purpose coursing through your veins, (HELLO you are one of the most creative signs in the zodiac!), that you need to express it.

LEO

July 23 - August 22 The Fool, my dear Leo, is the epitome of a new journey. He is the first of the Major Arcana and starts off the story of our lives, which ends with us finally creating our ideal world. He is about to set off on a new adventure and where the wind blows no one knows. This is exactly what I feel is needed for you in November. It’s almost like you have to go to the very beginning again. Ground zero. So much has changed and shifted and turned upside down for you this past month that the Fool energy makes a lot of sense. You actually kind of are starting over. I imagine you are saying screw it and throwing whatever was before you away and beginning again. You’ve been in a funky and at times sad or depressed place which is time to shift out of and pronto.

VIRGO

August 23 - September 22 My first hit for you my dear Virgo is that this month is about falling in love with life again for you. You were in such a head down, do your work place last month, as you had The Emperor card, that I feel it may have had you become a bit disconnected from your vision of your ideal life. You were forging forward with your ideas and strongly in action, yet that may create a polarizing energy. I feel it has been a bit tough to create your ideal world, when things have felt so challenging and even ugly at times. People can definitely be unaware of how their actions impact other people. But it’s because they do not even realize the impact on themselves.

LIBRA

September 23 - October 22 This is the time to, no shit, build your empire. Less thinking, more doing! No more pretending you don’t know what you are doing. You do. It may be easier to stick your head in the sand and act like you don’t know how powerful you are, but that isn’t doing anything for your success in the world. You have what it takes. You spent last month in that dream place with the Star Card. This month is the time to pick an idea or two that came from allowing yourself to vision and begin to build it. You are on the right path! Things may change and morph over time but that’s okay. The Emperor is the symbol for leadership and authority, it is also the card of structure and wisdom.

SCORPIO

October 23 - November 21 I am not going to sugarcoat anything sexy Scorpio especially because your spidey senses pick that stuff up like a bloodhound! Last month was

TAROT

freaking hard for you, I know that. When someone gets the Devil card, it usually means there is a strong struggle that’s happening around old ways of thinking, or patterns, or feeling stuck in situations that leave you feeling constrained and helpless. As hard as it may be, it’s time to turn the tide for yourself. This month you have the Lovers card. What this represents is all things love, and beauty, and romance. The butterflies in your stomach are twittering away.

SAGITTARIUS

November 22 - December 21 How are you feeling my dear Sag? Last month may have been a bit challenging for you in that you needed to practice restraint in sharing your infinite wisdom. The practice was getting all sides of the story before deciding your verdict. This month you have the Hierophant as your lesson to learn. This card is all about society, traditions, wisdom, knowledge, structures, systems, etc. The Hierophant has us looking at the places in which we are better served within that structure and knowledge passed down through times. On the flip side, we also get to inquire into where we need to trust our own wisdom and knowing.

CAPRICORN

December 22 - January 19 If you recall last month’s pull my dear Capricorn, the card pulled for you was the Hierophant. This was about figuring out for yourself what you need to do to finally let go of judgment and tradition/ societal expectation and the should as/could as/would as. With those realizations you probably had, I feel the Emperor is the perfect card for you this month. The Emperor is the symbol for leadership and authority, it is also the card of structure and wisdom. He is well respected and grounded in his approach to building his empire. It is time to get into action and methodically build your solid foundation!

AQUARIUS

January 20 - February 18 To me, this card means some focus in the direction you are moving in, but also making the hard decisions you need to make in order for you to keep on that track. You are definitely doing it Aquarius don’t forget you just came out a busy month in building your empire and taking care of business! Things will most likely get busier and crazier as the seeds you planted start to strongly grow, which is why the focus is needed more than ever. You will have a lot of things competing for your time and priorities bubbling up constantly, but what The Chariot reminds you of is that YOU are ultimately in the driver’s seat.

PISCES

February 19 - March 20 So, my precious Pisces, are you still floating from spending most of February in dreamland If you recall, last month you had the Star card, which is full permission for us to really dream up and envision our ideal life, in every area. Whether it was your love life, your career, your community/family, or your home, you got to really revel in that picturesque view. Now that you’re crystal clear, it’s time to get into action. Which for Pisces usually looks more like sitting back and making magic happen out of thin air. Think High Priestess. However this month’s card for you is the Empress. What you are being called to do is more of the structural work: strategy, plans, systems, building of the framework. The key here is sustainability. It’s easy to get ideas and start full blast, expending all of your energy there, but then you fade out in a month or two. TULIP - MARCH, 2017 79
