FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK what you give is what you get I have been adhering to and living upon this principle for long now. If not always; but mostly, it rendered me the same of what I gave to people of my life. A word of wisdom to most needed, a gift of time to the one who always wished to have or a moment of love to the one we deeply care for. Karma is a premonitory science which guides our senses to feel and understand what and how we relate ourselves to people who co-exist, who live in harmony and who are destined to have your time in their lives. I believe it is nature’s own parallel which abets in rediscovering yourself. Essentially, still a quality of thought or purpose to someone; may result in reflecting the same on you, sooner or later. Human mind is such that, what you see is also what you contain deep down inside, eventually impacting on your speech. I wish to channel this message out to every reader, insisting to be aware of this natural potential phenomenon. Because, what you give is what you get in return. The motif for this issue is - luxury. So get an informative access to the most expensive and classy automobiles, gadgets, watches and the most expensive movies of all times. THREE THINGS I LEARNED FROM THIS ISSUE – Woman is a word that conjures up a lot of images in our minds and brings out varied emotions as selfless love, nurturing and caring attitude. Celebrating Women’s Day is an opportunity to appreciate the remarkable contribution of women to our society. Ranging from socio-cultural, religious to biological; there is every reason why we must heartily enjoy the festival of Holi and cherish the reasons for its celebrations. We all have one life to live and to bring the best out of it. Therefore, live it king size.

KIM KARDASHIAN

Back in spotlight

Slams back critics!

There have been sources which found out that Kim Kardashian is fighting back at suggestions over her marriage to Kris Humphries, which was not real. She told sources – ‘If they really think about it, if this was a business decision and I really made all that money that everyone is claiming that we made off of the wedding and if the wedding was fake or just for television purposes, then I am a smart business woman and I would have stayed married longer! This was a bad decision’ she told sources. The wedding should never have happened in the first place. She told sources that if you really thought about it, then it doesn’t make any sense that everyone thinks that. She admitted that she has been watching how her marriage fell apart on the most recent season of the show on E. She says she watches it back, because she thinks it is kind of good for her, after everything that has been said and done. The reality star said it has been a hard couple of months since her breakup, but she doesn’t blame herself for falling in love so fast. Kim said her mom married Bruce Jenner after only 5 months and it worked out. She claims she is a hopeless romantic and knows that someday she will find the right man. Her marriage was authentic to Kris but things just didn’t work out as she planned. Now, she will move forward and remains optimistic.

Monica Lewinsky had tried to keep a low profile after her role in President Bill Clinton’s impeachment scandal, but she has become a trending topic of discussion again. All thanks to PBS’ two-part, fourhour documentary, titled Clinton. The documentary sheds new light on Clinton’s Oval Office affair with his then23-year-old intern through interviews with some of Clinton’s closest advisers - some of whom had never spoken publicly about the affair until now. Among the former White House staffers appearing on film are Secretary of Labor Robert Reich and Clinton’s former re-election campaign manager, Dick Morris. In the film, Morris reveals, ‘When the Lewinsky scandal broke, the President paged me and I returned the call. And he said to me, - ‘Ever since I got here to the White House I’ve had to shut my body down, sexually I mean. But I screwed up with this girl. I didn’t do what they said I did, but I may have done so much that I can’t prove my innocence.’ Though she plays a huge role in the story of Bill Clinton’s presidency, Monica Lewinsky herself was not interviewed for the movie.’ Producer Barak Goodman said that – ‘We felt it would tilt [the documentary] toward sensationalism.’

BEYONCE KNOWLES’ New Album

Beyonce’s only job right now is mom to one-month-old baby girl Blue Ivy Carter. But she’s already plotting a return to the recording studio sometime soon. She’s got plenty of new inspirational material, after all. Singer/songwriter Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic, who has helped produce big time hits with Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Beyonce herself says, he’s working with B again and has already sent the superstar songs about motherhood. The conversations about her next album literally just started and there are two projects happening, Ryan explained. ‘All I can say is you kind of feed her the best that you have; Beyonce’s this phenomenal filter and she takes it all in.’ He declined to specify what the star’s second project will be, on top of the new album, although a release of remixes for her album 4 has been rumored. 12 MARCH, 2012

AMIR KHAN

TV show delayed?

B O L L Y W O O D

While Aamir Khan is busy traversing the country to shoot undisclosed or long forgotten locations for his upcoming TV show, a rumour that is gathering strength back home is that the show’s telecast, in all likelihood, maybe delayed. Is Mr. Perfectionist’s need for precision to be blamed for the delay? Maybe or maybe not! However, we do know one of the reasons that caused postponement. According to chinwag, since the mishap on the show’s sets – it got destroyed by a major fire. As per the original plan, the team was supposed to wrap up filming by the end of March. But now with the set destroyed, it isn’t possible to shoot soon. Both the spokesperson of Star Plus and Aamir confirmed to a trade magazine that the shooting dates have not been finalized as the sets have to be reconstructed. Meanwhile, we have latest dope on Aamir’s current expedition across the length and breadth of India. Insiders say the actor has been travelling to various places – Kashmir, Rajasthan, Kolkata, Delhi and Gujarat – to shoot footage for a montage video for the show. But only Aamir and some of his close aides know what exactly the video will contain. Whatever it is, we are sure that Aamir won’t disappoint us with his innovative ideas, as always.

SAIF ALI KHAN

New song for Agent Vinod Kareena Kapoor’s mujra from Agent Vinod was supposed to be a crowd puller but that strategy doesn’t seemed to have worked. The song has received a lukewarm response from the audience. Even the Rasputin remake failed to raise any interest in the movie. So Agent Saif is on the mission to find that one hit song that has been eluding him – the one track that could boost the film’s chances at the BO. Though we don’t think a spy thriller like Agent Vinod needs to bank on dance numbers to promote itself, Saif seems to believe otherwise. Saif wanted to shoot a cool video for a fresh track and release it closer to the release of the film. He finally did manage to get that extra song out of the film’s composer. And here’s how - the song was composed by Pritam for another film, but Saif, who is on great terms with the music director, loved that song. The actor requested Pritam to give it to him instead and the composer gladly agreed. And while the two are still deciding which singer will lend his voice to this track, we hope Saif has finally found what he’s been looking for!

BIPASHA BASU

Over on screen kissing! Bipasha Basu is one bold actress, Indian industry is proud of. Known for her roles in Jism, Race and Raaz; it looks like the actress doesn’t fear on screen romance. However, Bips is totally a different lady when it comes to on screen kissing and she feels it’s something she is not very comfortable. ‘I am scared of kissing on screen. I had a really very uncomfortable experience in Jodi Breakers with Madhavan who is a friend’ - Bips said. ‘I had to kiss him, it was important for the film, so there was no convincing that was required. I knew I would do it but the process is not easy. Even for Raaz 3, it’s not going to be easy but don’t scare me from now. When it comes to it, we shall see’ she added. I am not dumb because I seek films and kissing is the integral part of sex, romance, passion and whatever expression you are trying to show. We watch Hollywood movies all the time and we watch Hindi films where these things have become regular. I as an individual, find tough to do. I will do it as it’s my work but I will feel uncomfortable - the 33 year old said.

PHIL MICKELSON Northern Trust Open

Phil Mickelson rode the conditions to lead the way at the end of the first day of the Northern Trust Open in Pacific Palisades, California. The four-time major winner, who tasted success at Pebble Beach recently, started his campaign to win back-to-back titles with a five-under 66 on day one, putting him a shot clear of JB Holmes and Hunter Mahan. On a blustery day, the left-hander had been tied for the lead with the pair until the final hole, when he chipped in from 35 feet for a sixth birdie of the day. Jonathan Byrd and Carl Pettersson are a shot further back, while English duo Luke Donald and Justin Rose are both handily placed on one under. Play was suspended early due to darkness with all but a handful of rounds complete, leaving Mickelson the happiest man in the clubhouse. ‘It feels really good to get that one extra shot because I felt like I left one or two out on 16, 17, and you hate to have such a good round and let a few slide late’ – Phil said. Also in the mix towards the top of the leader-board is Sergio Garcia who is one of eight players grouped together on two under, with the likes of Stewart Cink and KJ Choi alongside him. He was five over having completed the course, two better off than American Ryder Cup hopeful Anthony Kim.

SAHARA AND BCCI

Mend fences

Sahara India Pariwar reached a compromise with the BCCI returning as the Indian cricket team’s sponsors and agreeing to field the Pune Warriors for IPL - 5. Sahara, which had severed ties with the Board and withdrawn the Team India sponsorship, will return as a sponsor. Both BCCI and Sahara issued a joint statement, giving details of the agreement which envisaged a reactivation of the auction purse for Pune Warriors and an extension of the trading window among other things. Regarding the contentious issue of replacement for marquee player Yuvraj Singh, who is undergoing treatment for germ cell cancer in United States, Sahara has offered to obtain the consent of all the franchises for fielding five foreign players for the IPL matches. The BCCI and Sahara also agreed to start the arbitration proceedings initiated by Sahara through appointment of an arbitrator to address the corporate giant’s claims for a reduction in franchise fee for 74 matches. Sahara also requested for one of the playoff match scheduled to be played in Bengaluru and the BCCI said it was in principle agreement to host one of the playoffs in the new Pune stadium, subject to the consent of Royal Challengers Bangalore.

JOSE MOURINHO Best in history!

Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni has declared Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho as one of the best coaches in football history. Ceni was in Madrid to visit his friend, Real midfielder Kaka and was guest of honour at the club’s training sessio. Ceni said – ‘Watching Mourinho is pure spectacle. He designs workouts for specific positions and does tactical work. I like how he talks to his men and how close he is to them. I also like the way he handles their relationship with the press. All of this is important to have a good and easy going atmosphere. I think I’ve taken a lot from this which I could use some day, if I ever decide to coach. I will take this experience back with me to Brazil. I’ve learned a lot just by watching and listening.’ He’s been in the elite for years, training important sides like Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid for ten years. He always wins and reaches finals. Judging from what I’ve seen and how he commands the team, he isn’t just one of the best right now, but one of the best in football history.

A Day From Ajita Reddy’s Diary.. MARCH, 2012 25

TULIP

LIFESTYLE I am health conscious. I go for a morning walk at 6:30, after which; I get back home. If I go to my gym, I would reach home a little later and relax over a cup of tea while reading newspaper. I never miss the morning prayers – I get ready, take the blessings, have my breakfast and off to work at 10:30! We live within a beautiful gated community.

ARRANGE-LOVE MARRIAGE Yogesh and I dated for four years, before getting married in 1990. I met him first when I was 16, at a tutorial. I chose the same school he was in. His father has business here, therefore his family moved here. Yogesh had spent most of his time in Hyderabad.

LIVING UPTO MY PRINCIPLES First things first! Just before leaving office at 6:30, I have a habit of planning my work for the next day by making notes in my diary. I am punctual to my work. I never mix profession with my personal life. At home, one would never find me talking about work. Multi-tasking is required in today’s business world, but not to an extent that it interferes with personal life.

A WISE MOTHER Towards my kids, more than being concerned about their academics; I have always been particular about living organized lives. I insist my kids to maintain their living rooms well, take enough care of their belongings, etc. But they have been good at studies and have performed incredibly well all the time. They always knew what they wanted to achieve.

LIFE BEYOND WORK Being socially active, I get a lot of lunch invites; which unless the person is really close to me, I refuse to attend. Hyderabad is a small city and hence we get to meet new people all the time and bond well with them and make them, our good friends. I am out twice a week, but it’s always after my work. My husband is fond of going to parties which have dance and music. So, once in a fortnight or so, I would hang out at Bottles and Chimney or Liquids.

Brilliance is one thing. But what comes to my mind is the continuity and dedication on the days I don’t have to work. I will go to work, anyway! Because once I go to work, I actually realize there is so much more I could do. Therefore, brilliance and intelligence are on one side and commitment to work is on other side. 26 MARCH, 2012

TRAVEL REMEMBRANCES Holiday trip to Europe with husband and kids will remain special. More because, that’s when they were coming into teens and I got to know more about my kids, their likes and dislikes, abilities and attitudes. We had seen London, Paris, Venice, Switzerland in a duration of 20 days. We had set our own pace and that point of time, Yogesh and I got to know my kids real close. Attending AR Rehman’s concert in London is another good memory. That was another revelation for me! Yogesh had given my daughter a responsibility to stick the posters across the streets of London and she did it well all alone. Yogesh had let her abilities come out. So that was an experience too!

SUCCESS STATEMENT Success is a combination of making good money and being acknowledged for the fact that there is hard work and power. The role that I play brings with it a perceived notion of success. I would say – I still have a long way to go and I do not want to stop at one point. I do not believe in pushing anyone to excel. Everyone blooms at one point of time. It’s important to provide people some space and opportunities and they will come out successful.

THREE THINGS I CARRY BEFORE LEAVING HOME My bag My pocket diary My mobile

The team of Hamstech has 80 staff members and around 600 students. I make it a point to meet at least one employee everyday and take feedbacks, opinions and analyze if they can help the company on taking it, to a higher level. I also make sure there are no internal issues among the staff and the students. My typical day at work also includes checking if an employee is over-working or needs an assistant. There is a manager for every department in Hamstech and I make sure I communicate with all of them every day on taking work ahead and betterment of the company.

Hamstech believes that a student is on top of the organization and she / he is given top priority and then it is – Chairperson and then the Management. Any student issue is always brought to my notice first and I believe in dealing it in a soft and a matured way.

5 THINGS PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME… I am very good cook (which I guess is a less known fact).

I am passionate about whatever I take-up and I am well organized with both work and personal life. If I decide to do something, I will be well prepared for that. I love spending time at home. I am addicted to watching television and watch all those saas-bahu serials. I love going out for movies during the weekends. I have seen Umrao Jaan more than 10 times. I do move a tear whenever I watch an emotional scene from a movie.

I love travelling, meeting new people and interacting with them. I am a foodie and like to try different cuisines. I make it a point to travel three times a year (one with just husband – Yogesh, one with family and one with friends). I start my day with music. I listen to all the genres.

hrown to the waves and fate, the bottle could have ended up anywhere. Instead, it is found just three weeks after it begins its journey. Theresa Osborne; divorced and the mother of a twelve-year-old son, discovers it during a seaside vacation from her job as a Boston newspaper columnist. Inside is a letter which reads – ‘My dearest Catherine, I miss you my darling, as I always do, but today is particularly hard because the ocean has been singing to me and the song is that of our life together.’ For Garrett, the message is the only way he knows to express his undying love for a woman he lost. For Theresa, wary of romance since her husband shattered her trust, the message raises questions which intrigue her. Challenged by the mystery and driven to find Garrett by emotions, she does not fully understand that Theresa begins a search which takes her to a sunlit coastal town and an unexpected confrontation. Brought together either by chance or something more powerful, Theresa and Garrett’s lives come together in a tale that resonates with deepest hopes for finding everlasting love. Shimmering with suspense and emotional intensity, Message In A Bottle takes readers on a hunt for the truth about a man and his memories and about both the heartbreaking fragility and enormous strength of love. For those who cherished The Notebook and readers waiting to discover the magic of Nicholas Sparks’ storytelling, here is an achingly lovely novel of happenstance, desire and the choices which matter most.

SummerBeauty Special and Skin Secrets

BEAUTY

Summer is a time to relax and rejuvenate. At the same time, summer sun can be very harsh on your soft skin and deep fry your natural looks. Summer is cruel for your face, which remains uncovered almost all times. So you need to take special care of your skin in summers... Find a good sunscreen that works under makeup - Ideally, you want a sunscreen with a matte or semi-matte finish. You don’t want anything greasy or that takes forever to absorb. It’s also important to give it enough time to sink in before applying any base make-up to ensure the make-up sits on the skin well. This is a fundamental thing must follow during summers. To protect the skin from hands of sun burn and other harmful effects, use sunscreen lotion regularly. A sunscreen that has SPF 15 at least can guard the skin from any sun damage. You can also choose hydrating toner in lieu of moisturizer during hot summer days. No sunburn - To get rid of sunburn. You can adapt a useful method. Take aloe-Vera extract or lotion and apply it on the skin. Apart from treating sunburn, the formula will also relax your skin. A sunburn cream that contain zinc can heal sunburn overnight. Try a tinted moisturizer - Because most tinted moisturizers also contain SPF. So you can quickly apply it and achieve sheer coverage which gives your skin a more polished appearance (for those who are not blessed with perfect skin). Go waterproof - Nothing is more budge-, crease- and smudgeproof than something that is also waterproof or water resistant. You might not be swimming, but the sweat 40 MARCH, 2012

and humidity can take a toll on things like eyeliner and mascara. Powder - Whenever you apply a cream or liquid product, make sure you set it with powder. Keeping a pressed powder compact in your bag is an excellent way to freshen up your face after being outside, too. Less is good - When it’s just sweltering out, you might just want to wear less makeup. Get creative with the minimal look to get you through the hottest days. Consider cream or gel blushes - These blushes tend to last longer – blushes which are designed to stain will last longer than your average powder blush, because the sweat won’t break it down easily. Drink a lot. Water is the life, especially during summer days. Drink eight to nine glasses of water daily and hydrate the body naturally. It will enhance your glow too. Also include fruit juice and other leafy green vegetables in your diet.

STUDIES WITH FUN!

TULIP

CAMPUS BUZZ

M

arch is here and to students, it’s nothing but the month of stress, tension and strain the month of exams! The most dreaded time of the academic year when the entire year’s preparations come down to a few decisive days…

But the phase of exams need not be stressful and boring all the time, during when students lock themselves in their rooms for hours together to study. Despite being an important month, students can add in a fun element to it. ‘All work and no play makes Jack, dull boy.’ This is an old phrase, we have been hearing since we were little. If one keeps studying for hours without taking a break, it would just add into the stress. Shubam Bhanghad an inter second-year student says – ‘I am preparing for my final exams as well as other competitive exams and when me and my friends get stressed; we call each other and meet up for bowling or for a game of snooker. It is the best way to relax.’ When exam studies get hectic, catching up with a friend for an hour or going out for a movie after all the portion is complete, is the best way to refresh your mind. Some students make studying itself fun! Friends form a study group and they assign sections of the portion to each other in the group and then make that person provide a summary and key information in that section to the rest of the group. Tanushree, a second-year student of St. Francis College says – ‘My friends and I meet up at each other’s place and study practical subjects together. We help each other out and also have our share of fun.’ Studying with friends is always helpful and makes it easier to remember answers.

Meghna Singh a final year student of Villa Marie says – ‘Exams are the best time of the year for me as I get to have sleepovers at my friend’s place. We stay awake all night with several cups of coffee and Maggie. We complete our portion one night before the exam and revise answers with each other just before the exam. Studying with my friends always helps me relieve the stress of the portion to be completed and we finish our portions in one night which we would be difficult, if I studied alone.’ If you are the type who likes to study alone, then you could always make music your companion. Soft music playing in the background as you study would help calm your mind and is a great stress buster. So go ahead and try out the new and fun ways of studying and make exams time, a happy time…

WELLBEING

WAY TO BETTER HEALTH! Every single day, we meet ourselves in the mirror and discover a new crease on the skin, a new grey in the mane, a new disease or a new pain and each of us is constantly engaged in finding a solution, a remedy, a panacea to win this battle against our own ageing self. Agelessness and longevity have captured the interest of masters across civilizations for many millennia now. Yogi Ashwini; a master in Yoga, Tantra, Past-Life Revisiting and Healing Sciences, unveils the secrets of the Vedic seers to anti-ageing in his new book Sanatan Kriya – The Ageless Dimension. The book is being called a thesis on anti-ageing. But is there really a dimension called the ageless? Can ageing really be stalled? Is it not like birth and death, a natural process and hence inevitable? In an interview with Tulip, the guiding light of Dhyan Ashram, Yogi Ashwini takes on all this and more from his two decades of research on the being.

Ageing is a normal phenomenon of the body. Are you going against the nature with this book?

Yogi Ashwini - It is normal to age. Ageing is a phenomenon of dulling of the senses and reduction in the size of the brain. The reaction time to a stimulus also becomes more, bones become brittle and the body becomes weak. We are going against nature, that is why we are ageing faster. The various revolutions like green revolution and industrial revolution have polluted the planet and played havoc with our foundations and nature. Hence, there has been an advent of so many new diseases. every step which modern science takes forward is actually towards the destruction of the body, faster. So ageing is not natural. It is unnatural to fall sick and to age.

You mean it’s actually unnatural to age?

Yogi Ashwini - You have to first understand what life and death are and what this body is. Only then you will understand ageing. In my book, I tried to explain all of the above and also what is the purpose of birth and what the fundamentals are, behind the process of ageing. Once you understand all this, only then can you understand what is natural and what is unnatural. It is hard to explain everything here.

Can you tell us something more about the new book?

Yogi Ashwini - The book is an attempt to awaken the hidden powers and potentials inside the human being. It is an attempt to make you understand who you are and what is the purpose of your birth, what the mechanisms are, behind the process of ageing and how you are damaging your body with the modern lifestyle, the threats to you and how to go beyond them and live a healthy and happy life. It gives you techniques to prolong your life and leave the body at your will and knowing well where you are going.

Does this book answer the quest for that eternal glow and radiance?

Yogi Ashwini - I have given the rare Sanjeevni Saar Kriya, by which you would be able to affect a complete kayakalp in you. Also some very rare herbal recipes are given which will stall ageing and give you that glow and radiance, protecting you from the damaging effects of the modern artificial techniques. You would go close to nature, understand its secrets and use them for your beauty, glow and longevity. I am not saying that you will become physically immortal, but I am saying that when you will leave your body, you won’t die.

Is Sanjeevni Saar an extension to the Sanatan Kriya?

Yogi Ashwini - Sanatan kriya has no sequels or extensions. It is a complete kriya in itself. It is designed to balance the body and prevent diseases from entering. When the various layers of the body get balanced, certain profound spiritual experiences follow. Sanjeevni saar is more aimed at arresting the ageing process and getting a disease-free body with a radiance, which I have said is enough to attract the Gods, if done under a Guru. If not, then definitely it would just make human heads turn towards you. Festival Of Colours

Holi is undoubtedly the most fun filled festival in India. It is an occasion which brings joy and mirth, fun and play, music and dance and of course - lots of bright colours! It is the festival to shake off the shackles of what is to be done and what is not to be done and loosen up a little bit. It’s a festival to let down your hair and do what you like, say what you like and meet and tease anybody. The best part is all the offence and anger gets dissolved with one phrase - Bura na maano holi hai‌ With winter neatly tucked away, it is time to get out of your cocoons and enjoy the spring festival. Holi is a two day festival that marks the end of winter and advent of spring. It falls on the full moon day in the month of March. The first day is marked with bonfire which is lit at night to mark the end of winter and the death of evil. The next morning is Dhulendi, the holi celebration day.

HOLI FASHION

Holi is the festival of colours but everyone sticks to white. With people becoming increasingly fashion conscious - hot pants, backless and off shoulder tops in vibrant colours have taken a front seat. Dhoti pants are a new addition to your Holi attire. Men can dress up in simple white kurta or shirt and a pair of denims. Bollywood plays a major role when it comes to dressing up for holi. So for all those who would like stay away from vibrant clothes do it the Bollywood way wear white and what could be a better way to flaunt off your curves in a nice pair of short chudidars? 48 MARCH, JANUARY, 2012 2012

THE HOLI PARTY

Celebrate the festival with friends, colours, food and thandai! If you are planning to play a host this holi, there is no need to stress. All you need

The foremost thing to remember when you’re throwing a party is the guest list. Make sure everyone knows each other in your guest list. While inviting the guests spread the word on the dress code .The best thing about Holi is that you don’t have to dress up. You can make it mandatory for your guest to wear white to add the fun.

keep your guests soaked up.

Make this Holi an eco-friendly one. Stick to the organic colours this year. Even better you could also go ahead with natural colours and make them yourself.

TULIP

is a little planning and a few easy tips to ensure your guests have a great time.

Green - Use mehendi / henna powder, separately or mix with equal quantity of any suitable flour to attain a lovely green shade. Make use only pure mehendi and not the one mixed with amla, as this would be brown in colour. Dry mehendi will not leave colour on your face as it can be easily brushed off. For the wet colour, mix 2 teaspoons of mehndi in one liter of water.

Plan your food menu a week in advance. For a day party, keep it simple! Keep food which people could easily have with toothpick and wouldn’t need to use hands. You could also have a live chaat counter. Do make sure you have the traditional Holi sweets like Malpua, Jalebis and lots of Thandai.

I wish to celebrate the first half of this festival with my family. I have a group of close friends with whom I hangout often. So the second half of the celebrations are generally with my friends. But, this time I wish to celebrate Holi with my group of friends at a beach party in Goa. Have a safe and a joyous Holi, everyone - Koyal Chandak.

How can Holi be complete without Bhaang! You can have Bhang ki Thandai, Bhang ke Ghujiya and Bhang ke Ladoo. Bhaang is an instant hit in every Holi party. A holi party in incomplete without music. You can organize some live music, a dance floor and DJ where guests can put in requests for their favorite songs to be played. However, see to it that the DJ has a list of popular Bollywood Holi numbers like Rang Barse; Holi Ke Din; Do Me A Favour, Lets’s Play Holi, etc. But nothing can beat the traditional Dholak and folk songs as it really brings in the desi flavour. Holi is the festival of colours but make sure to use organic colours which do not ruin the skin. Keep plates of dry colours on each table from where your guest can easily access them. And don’t let your guests get away without getting wet! Arrange an inflated pool which can be filled up in water. Do keep tubs of water everywhere with pichkaris handy to

‘Holi is always with my immediate family and very close friends. We have this ritual of visiting our farmhouse at Gachibowli and have good time there. This festival is special to me. It’s always a dry Holi and we play only with colours and while avoiding usage of eggs. We binge only vegetarian food which includes my favourites likes cheese sandwich, pakoda and desserts like - gulab jamoon’ - Shravan Ramaswamy.

Red - Dry red hibiscus flowers in shade and powder to make a lovely red colour. To increase the bulk add any flour to it. For the wet colour, peels of red pomegranate boiled in water give red. And for the brighter red, mix thoroughly a pinch of chuna (the one that’s eaten with paan) with two spoons of turmeric powder and a few drops of water. Use only after diluting with 10 liters of water. Yellow - Mix two tea-spoons of turmeric with double quantity of gram flour for the wet colour. One teaspoon of turmeric can be mixed with two liters of water. Magenta - Slice or grate one beetroot. Soak in one litre of water for a wonderful magenta. Boil or leave overnight for a deeper shade. Dilute.

Blue - The Jacaranda flowers can be dried in the shade and ground to obtain a beautiful blue powder. The flowers bloom in summers. For the wet colour, crush the berries of the Indigo plant and add to water for desired colour strength. If you are still planning to go ahead with the pakka colours, do take up a good skin and hair care. Apply tons of lotion and sun block to protect and your skin and a little oil will definitely help in removing the colour easily of your hair. In the end just remember to have fun, keep the festive mood on and enjoy your Holi. Because bura na maano, Holi hain…

Holi is one festival in my household that is sheer fun! However, in a traditional household like mine, there is more to Holi than just colours. On the eve of Holi, the whole extended Badruka family gets together for a ‘Holika Dahan’ where a ceremonial fire is lit - freshly harvested seasonal crops like wheat, chana and sugarcane are part of the offerings to the fire. The next day is of course fiesta time! My daughters Advaitika and Tvadhanya have a blast. Yes, we do ensure that we buy natural, skin friendly colours. The fun finally culminates into an evening party, which is again a family do; with loads of traditional eats like - dahi vadas, chaats and chatter – Shalini Badruka.

For the past 6 years we have enjoyed participating in the celebration of Holi. This year will be no different! Our family will prepare our skin and hair with oil and purchase organic colours so the lasting effects of stained skin and hair are not so obvious! The first year I could not get the green dye out of my hair for two months (laughs). This year we will probably visit our friends or participate in and around the local gated community, in the park. My kids really enjoy celebrating and it gives them an opportunity to get totally crazy! For me, it’s a great chance to take pictures and capture people and children in all forms of colour and excitement - Lona Logan.

- By Chandni Parekh ‘I am a very colourful person. Therefore, I love this festival. But Holi for me has to be a very elegant affair. No messing around with dirty chemicals colours. It has to be only gulaal and water with close family and friends. Thandai, Bhang and good music are never to be missed’ – Rekha and Manish Malpani. Mostly I will be attending an event on Holi, this year. If not, I do the craziest of things and preparations with my sister for Holi. Making a mixture of eggs and tomatoes and putting them in balloons and throwing them at our close friends were the naughtiest things we did together before. After playing Holi with friends, we have bhang and sweets in the evening, gather again and watch a movie or go for dinner - Shraddha Das.

Holi has always been my favourite festival. It is a festival of love and unity and celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Sometimes colours speak louder than words. I hope this Holi is also as exciting and colourful as always. Wishing everyone a very happy and a wonderful Holi - Namita Kanodia.

On a tete-a-tete Renu Sukheja states the values she imbibed from her parents, love towards her kids Rohit and Reha and the constant support and motivation she received from husband, Raj...

Life, when I was younger… Renu – I was pampered to the core - clothes worn which were never repeated, anything and everything a child could possibly want, we would get without asking from my parents. Birthday parties were celebrated in a lavish way at home. During Cricket season, every Sunday - Mom would take snacks and juices for the entire cricket team, (since dad was the captain of the Sindhi Cricket Team in Kolkata and an excellent left-arm bowler) followed by after-match party at out residence. Whenever my Dad came back from his trip, if he liked anything for me, he would pick the same thing in different colours in 4 to 6 pieces and get the same even for my best friend too. He would always be there for anyone who would go to him for anything, he got people married and settled too and he is still remembered even today. But we were scared of him, because he always looked very serious and I guess since he was always travelling, we hardly got time to spend with him. It was early to bed and early to rise for us. But that changed as we grew up and became closer. Our parents brought us up in such a way that, even after all the pampering during our time we still were totally grounded - which is so important in life. Money here today - gone tomorrow, but you are always remembered as an individual - that’s how my kids have been brought up and we are so proud of them. They have their freedom and they know exactly where to draw the line. My first visit to Hyderabad was with my Mom’s close friend, in 1975, for 15 days. I stayed at her home. It was a huge and a spacious home that I remember, I had so much fun.

On pursuing my passion… 58 MARCH, 2012

Renu - Before getting into designing clothes, I used to be a ramp model for a couple of years and choreographed a fashion show for Hindustan Lever, in mid 80s. I also did many makeovers for friends and cousins when I was in school. Modelling, designing of clothes, forming a dance group of children under 15 yrs called - Raindrops and now I am back into grooming once again. Who says dreams don’t come true? Ask me about it! I am living my dreams… - Renu.

My family - My life… Reha is doing her final year in Fergusson College. She was the 1st runner-up for the title Miss Universe India - I Am She 2010, after which she has been walking for top designers in the country and doing the Lakme Fashion Week, India Bridal Week, L’Oreal Fashion Tour and now will be walking for Wills Fashion week, too. She was in the Basketball team in school and was also selected to play for the national team and was the Head Girl in Chirec. Rohit is a graduate, a gamer and is extremely artistic. Loves sports and swimming - he was chosen for the West Bengal basketball team and loves dancing too. He is doing business with his father.

From the heart of a connoisseur...

Gaurav Chakraborty – Executive Chef (Novotel Hyderabad Airport) shares with the readers of Tulip, his journey as a chef. Below mentioned are a few of his signature dishes with their recipes and methods of preparation… Most challenging aspect of being a chef –

In modern day kitchen, a chef is responsible for various things at work. It is not only ensuring a good quality food but also a good experience to the guest. A chef’s job these days also involves managing manpower, cost, productivity of staff, training and so on. The guest these days have travelled more and experienced more than many of us. So understanding the guests’ needs and delivering things to the expectation is very important. Being able to change and constantly elevating the quality is the need of the time. Keeping a strong focus in achieving what I just mentioned is the only challenge that chefs have. Well, the competition around always helps you to be on the toes and that is the best part about the business.

When you are designing a meal, which factors do you keep in your mind –

When I am designing a menu, I always try to understand the clientele, their tastes and their liking. There are times when my guests are equally adventurous in trying new things. Then I take a lead in doing something new. I throw the idea to my team and they also come up with amazing things to delight the guests.

Greatest achievement as a Chef -

I think to me being a chef has given me an immense opportunity to travel, try new things and learn new cultures across the world. Pulling out an element from different places and creating something new has always excited me. To be able to do this constantly and giving my guest a wow experience is something that I have achieved.

DREAM MACHINES

Portrayed below is a personality who made a princely life for himself out of designing and customizing vehicles for celebrities across India. Qualified in Transportation Design from Art Center College of Design, California; Dilip Chhabria is noted globally for his sheer passion towards automobiles and impeccable creativity in fashioning the best of cars. Upon a conversation, the machine maestro cites down his journey until now and the scope for moto-designing in India… How and when was DC designs started -

It all started in 1993, in Mumbai. At that time, the fundamental premise was to understand what the customer wants. As human beings, we evolve and seek to change. And we see the same principle being applied to their cars. In a long time, I also wanted to position my company against other Italian automotive design studios.

Your first biggest breakthrough –

When I designed Mahindra Armada in 1993! But there was a voice within me which said that it would be successful and it was! I was also called by Mahindra group to see on how I could help them and I was glad I did that effectively.

Favourite project till date -

We handle about 25 – 30 projects at a time. One of the most exciting projects was the re-making of Aston Martin. I had also designed a recreational coach (which looks more like a caravan) for Shahrukh Khan.

What according to you are the limitations to modifications –

We need to ensure that we do not exceed the limits. Check the regulations list and design according to its utility.

Important aspects to keep in mind while designing in car –

Engineering wise, one should never compromise with the car. We should only look to enhance the value of a car.

Would there be any effect on mileage after designing? If yes, then how – Not usually! 62 MARCH, 2012

The car should be futuristic, creative and unique.

California is known for providing the best of motor cars, to the world! How would you key out your learning phase there -

AUTOMOBILES

How does appliance of colours play an important role? How does it catch someone’s attention –

Colours we choose for a car, do play an important role. They give a unique look to a vehicle. Therefore, choosing the right combination is crucial. Primary colours help us in bringing out some aspects to designs and also help us to suppress the designs which are dull-looking. Black for instance, is used to suppress certain elements which we don’t want to highlight.

It was incredible! I am a qualified in Transportation Design from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. The wide, open spaces there and the empty roads there were helpful in testing the vehicle conditions.

Does usage of colours depend on the size and shape of a car –

Tell us about your automobile designing institute DC – DYP in Pune –

They are increasingly very well informed what they are looking for exactly. They are already widely travelled - particularly, my class of customers. And they constantly get information about the same from television and internet sources these days.

It was started in 2010. This institute makes sure the vocational aspects are well mastered by the students, more the academics and the students are better equipped.

TULIP

What should people have in mind while designing a car -

Not only size and shape, but also the segment of a car!

How do customers know what they are looking for -

If the customers are not happy, how do you think you can redesign to make sure it meets customers’ likes –

When we undertake a job, we create three dimensional models; so they know what they are getting.

What is the scope for modification and how is it developing in India now –

Well, like I mentioned before, we seek change! According to my survey – out of 100, five car owners seek redesigning and modification.

Which countries according to you in the world are the best / top in modification In the order – California (USA), England and Japan.

How is designing in California different from that in India –

Each country has its own uniqueness in designing. There are minor differences in the way Indians design. Indians tend to follow certain aspects which Californians do not!

Throw more light on the success of the special version of Tata Nano –

A very few were designed initially. We received a lot of exposure! Internationally, the response was satisfying.

According to you, which types of wheels are preferred in a sports car –

Tell us more about Avanti. How is it different from other sports car? Its specifications, features, launch of date, price and in the city of launch -

Avanti is in the lines of Ferraris and Lamborghinis. All Avanti cars are equipped with Ford engines and are priced are the advantageous - 25 lakhs.

We do not have much choice in these! But according to me, Michelin are the best. They are designed in such a way that they can sustain high speed for a longer duration on any type of road.

If I ask you to pick 3 of the best brands in cars, which would choose –

you

Aston Martin (for possessing a matured look inside-out), Porsche (for its wonderful design which they have been maintaining for over 30 years now) and Ferrari (for its sheer speed and drop-dead gorgeous looks and agile handling).

This is the only car so far that utilizes front crash structure made entirely of carbon fiber. SPECIFICATIONS – 0 – 62 mph in 3.8 seconds and 626 bhp @ 6,500 rpm. Price - £ 395,337

PORSCHE SPYDER 918

The most expensive Porsche ever! The 918 Spyder is a mid-engined two seater sports car, designed by Michael Mauer; that is powered by a 3.4 liter V8 engine (500 hp/370 kW) which is a development of the engine used in the RS Spyder Le Mans Prototype racing car. The car is powered by both a 500-horsepower V8 and a pair of electric motors (one for each axle) producing an additional 218 hp or 160kW. At full gallop, the concept can theoretically reach 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and nip 198 mph on the high end. On the flip side, Porsche says it can also achieve 78 miles per gallon and emit just 70 grams of CO2 per kilometer. The car combines Porsche’s Intelligent Performance technology, high-tech in motorsport, and classic but modern design to make a truly convincing statement. SPECIFICATIONS – 147 bhp / liter, 72 bhp / 54 KW power, natural aspiration, 3.397 liter / 207.3 cu in displacement and 0 – 62 mph in 3.2 seconds and top speed of 200 mhp. Price – £ 102,500

LAMBORGHINI REVENTóN

The most powerful and the most expensive Lamborghini ever built is the third on the list. It takes 3.3 seconds to reach 60 mph and it has a top speed of 211 mph. The specifications of the car has taken its base from the Murciélago LP640, a classic supercar and improved on its characteristics and designs. The interior of the car is made of leather, aluminum, carbon and Alcantara that are carefully selected to ensure the top of its quality. It also has an easy-to-use touch buttons that will instantly change the information display mode of the vehicle. Another thing that is noteworthy in its interior is the G-Force meter, which amazingly displays the cars acceleration, dynamic drive force and breaking, in a 3-dimensional viewing, just like in aeronautics. Its manufacturer made only 20 pieces of this car. SPECIFICATIONS – Torque – 487 lb-ft @ 6000 rpm, 650 HP, 6496cc Displacement. Price - £ 1,020,952 64 MARCH, 2012

AUTOMOBILES

ASTON MARTIN ONE-77

The most advanced technology, design and standards of construction, culminating in one of the greatest supercars of all time. While smaller engines being force-fed copious amounts of air via super and turbochargers is the new craze in the auto industry, Aston Martin decided to take a decidedly old school approach to the One-77 and its massive, naturally aspirated 7.3-liter V12. Aston Martin says that due to the One-77’s skyhigh performance aspirations, special attention has also been paid to brake cooling, as the brakes have less time to cool between bursts of acceleration. Another incredible aspect of the One-77 is the exclusivity and uniqueness about the car. Only 77 examples (hence the name) will ever be built, with no two cars being exactly alike thanks to a customization system befit of a seven-figure supercar. SPECIFICATIONS – 750 nm maximum torque, 0 – 62 mph in 3.7 seconds, 10.9:1 compression ratio, maximum speed of 354 km/ hour and alloy quad overhead camshaft, 48-valve, 7312 cc v12.
