When it comes to controversies, Tollywood is never lagging behind! Few heroines make some controversial remarks in the name of ‘regrets’ and they sound pretty awkward as well as surprising. Recently an actress from a Telugu movie has revealed that she regrets about kissing her co-star in their recent movie. That coming from an actress who has done the movie titled about kisses is a little confusing, but one wonders what the actor has to say about this. 24 JUNE, 2019 TULIP

Every Day, Father’s Day The Usual: A Snore before the TV, Worry for our Safety The bond between a father and his child is irreplaceable and plays an extremely vital role in the child’s life. Being the support system of the child and encouraging them to attain their own success and becoming the best version of themselves, a father’s job is timeless. Although the importance of the bond might be universal, the nature of the bond and how these bonds function is different for different people. With Father’s Day approaching on the 16th of June, we have asked some of your favourite people from Hyderabad to talk about their FatherChild bond. Here’s what they have to say – 28 JUNE, 2019 TULIP

SPECIAL

Shona & Tapaas Chakravarti How important is father’s day to you? Father’s Day to me is yet another occasion to celebrate, in a small way, the phenomenon that is my dad. A day of handmade greeting cards, presents and father-daughter bonding time! What’s your relationship with your father like? My father has always played such a multifaceted role in my life; apart from being my role model and a super dad, he’s also been my professional mentor and my best friend. He is one person who knows all my secrets and gives me the right advice to deal with life in all its colours. He has taught me the values of family, love, responsibility and conscientiousness and has always been my mirror and my greatest cheer-leader. He truly sees the best in me and pushes me to be the best version of myself, even in times when my own motivation levels and judgement are clouded. What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of your father? Superhero! He has always been, and always will be the ultimate hero to me and my mother. What, according to you, is the role of a father in a child’s life? I have been lucky enough to have extremely doting and involved parents growing up. Both my parents took equal responsibility towards my well-being, education and general upbringing. There were no gender-specific roles that were played by each of them; I grew up with a really hands-on-dad who participated in every big and small decision in my life, nurtured me mentally and emotionally, and constantly provided me the guidance and direction towards the right path. I could always communicate openly with him about anything- study pressure, gynaecological issues, fashion and make up, crushes, issues with friends- I think it is very important for fathers to be able to establish open channels of communication with their kids, especially their daughters, in order to give them tempered advice and support, and to encourage them to reach their truest potential. No words can truly express how impactful and crucial a father’s role can be in his child’s life- he often becomes the icon that his kids hope to become like someday. Is the generation gap between you and your father very evident with regards to the way you think, etc? How do you overcome this? In most matters, I think I am very lucky to have a Dad that is really woke and abreast with the times and the issues and traumas of our generation. He is mostly very liberal and intuitive. This bridges most of our generation gap. However if there are points of contention, my mother acts as a referee, and we figure solutions out together as a team of three- as I said earlier- communication and connect are key! What is the best memory that you have with your father? I work and travel with my father and we are constantly sharing the same space, much like Batman and Robin, so the plethora of memories is huge! But my favourite ones date back to my childhood- he preponed his business trip to Paris just so that he could be back in time to help me dress up in a saree for the first time ever, for my 10th grade farewell at school. He was even thoughtful enough to help me pick out the perfect white saree, and to carry back jewellery and make up from his trip to make the occasion as special and memorable as possible ... I still remember how he teared up and took photos on the camera when I was all dressed up and ready to leave home!

Aadarsh Balakrishna & Nirvaan Aadarsh Krishna How important is father’s day to you? That was always the plan - to be a father. Not just any father, but a kickass father! The award winning Bharat Ratna types. I’m not even kidding. And it’s not so much about the day in itself. Because when you’re a father, you’re a father. There are no off days. But yes, in today’s society, I see the importance of dedicating a particular day because on some level it’s creating awareness. Also, it’s a great marketing activity! Also, we have a math day, science day, dog day, cat day, vegan day, so why not a father’s day! To what extent does your experience with your father influence the relationship that you have with your son? To a large extent, actually. I’ve always wanted to be a father and part of the reason is because my dad was amazing with what he did. So obviously there is an influence. But the times are different. I grew up in a joint family. Today it’s all nuclear. It brings with it its own set of challenges you know. He had his own style of doing stuff. I have mine. What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of your son? He’s so alive all the time! He’s a bundle of unbridled energy and it’s infectious! There’s a sense of excitement and wonder about everything these kids say and do. It’s just so entertaining to sit back and just watch him go about his business. What, according to you, is the role of the father in a child’s life? I believe that parenthood is an 18-21 year project if done right. Especially the first 7-10 years. They come into the world absolutely devoid of any kind of conditioning and it’s supremely important that we pass on the right environment for them to learn, grow and flourish. We don’t want them to just survive. We want them to thrive. A lot of the times though in today’s world, we’re just manufacturing robots that are made to just focus on results. They should be allowed to explore the world in their own space and time. A 360 degree approach that gives equal importance to all facets of life is my personal way to go about it. Also, kids don’t do as they’re told. They do as we do. So obviously, we got to walk the talk and that puts the onus on us to be the best version of ourselves. A conscious approach to parenting is the way forward. If you were to give some tips to your son when he turns 18, what would they be? If my parenting goes according to plan, he should hopefully figure what to do by himself. But if it really comes down to a speech, I’d probably give him a line or two from Rocky Balboa...just for some drama! What is the best memory that you have with your son? From among the zillion memories, apart from the obvious moment when I first held him, it would probably be the first time he called me by name. My heart skipped a beat. I remember just melting and feeling overwhelmed. 32 JUNE, 2019 TULIP

SPECIAL

Shruti Sarin & Sanjeev Kumar Sarin

How important is Father’s day to you? Father’s Day is definitely an important day where we celebrate how imperative it is to honour our Father. Just how crucial a role of the mother is, its beautiful that one day of the year we celebrate to thank our Father for being a huge support system. Although, we must wake up every day and be grateful to our parents, this day calls for something a little extra to remind ourselves about how blessed we are to have a Father in our life! What’s your relationship with your Father like? The relationship between the daughter and father can never be described In a few words, but my dad is definitely my mentor, my guide and my support system! He’s brought me up so well, given me the best of everything and has looked after me like a princess. There are times my Dad has been a mentor with my work and there are times when he has been an emotional support to me on rough patches, there are also times I probably just want to talk about my life over a drink and that’s a small glimpse of my relationship with my Father. What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of your father? The First word would be giving. Fathers love to his daughter is always to give without having any expectations of getting anything back.

What, according to you, is the role of a father in a child’s life? The father’s role in a child’s life is extremely important in the child’s overall growth. Though not explicitly but a father plays an important role in nurturing the child and teaching him/her the ways of life. Is the generation gap between you and your father very evident with regards to the way you think, etc.? How do you overcome this? Luckily, I don’t see that with my relation with Dad. He is extremely adaptive with any generation change. We may have different views on several occasions but when the communication is strong, there lies no such generation gap. What is the best memory that you have with your father? There is not just one special memory that I cherish, there are many. But one such memory I will always cherish is our first trip to Dubai and the fun times we spent together. 34 JUNE, 2019 TULIP

Sophia Azad & Sameer Azad Mahendra How important is father’s day to you? Father’s Day is really important to me as it is a day dedicated to appreciate my father. Usually, as a parent, every single day of their lives is dedicated to their children. This day is one opportunity to give back to them the love and affection and make it solely his day! What’s your relationship with your father like? My father is my biggest support system and mentor. I always look up to him for advice. What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of your father? Strong willed, dedicated, kind, the list can go on! What, according to you, is the role of a father in a child’s life? A father is a mentor and a stabilising factor in a child’s life. I reckon a father’s role is to be the biggest support system for the child as well as help shape the child’s future in a disciplined manner. Is the generation gap between you and your father very evident with regards to the way you think, etc.? How do you overcome this? Not totally, but yes there are situations in which the mind-set to tackle the situations varies a lot. I think we try to overcome this by having effective communication, and trying to come to a mutual agreement. What is the best memory that you have with your father? The best memory I have with my father has to be when both of us went on almost all the rollercoasters in Orlando Disneyland. Even though he felt dizzy and nauseous after a few rides, he still went on them with me because he knew how much I loved rollercoasters!

Tanvi Bhatia & Kartik Bhatia How important is father’s day to you? A father to any daughter is The Best Man and he always remains that for her. For me, he is my anchor and dedicating a day to him is a wonderful feeling! What’s your relationship with your father like? My equation with my father is of trust, empathy and a lot of handholding. We play a role of not just be a father-daughter duo in each other’s life but also being that support system which both of us need. It’s a relationship that equates with being a son on the tougher days and a daughter on the vulnerable ones. What’s the first word that comes to mind when you think of your father? Warmth and Compassion. What, according to you, is the role of a father in a child’s life? Parenting, from a father’s perspective, is a crucial one and builds the foundation of a child’s upbringing. A daughter always looks up to her father and sets the benchmarks. Is the generation gap between you and your father very evident withregards to the way you think, etc.? How do you overcome this? Fortunately, I am blessed to share a beautiful equation with my father. Our thought processes and views in life are in absolute sync. What is the best memory that you have with your father? The best memory I have with my father is when we cook together. Right from my childhood, I have seen him cook fabulous food for us and this special memory goes down the lane for me. Food binds and brings us together!

46 JUNE, 2019 TULIP

COVER STORY

How did your career in acting start? Has acting always been a passion of yours? As I was modelling earlier, acting came as a natural progression, but it has always been my dream and passion to act. What is the turning point in your career? I don’t know if you can call it a turning point but ‘Kanche’ was definitely an important film. It was a unique and special film and gave me the much needed recognition and applause. Apart from acting, what other major activities do you usually engage in? I really enjoy fitness related activities like gym, dance, MMA, yoga etc. These are a few activities I engage with on a regular basis. Other than these, I love travelling too! Your Instagram has a lot of pictures of beaches? Do you prefer beaches over mountains? What’s your favourite beach? I don’t think I have a favourite because it’s hard to choose among two bounties of nature. I honestly haven’t been to that many mountains but I would love to. Beaches and sunsets on the other hand top my list of most visited places so you see that a lot on my Instagram! Among those, Malibu beach in California is my absolute favourite. Tell us a funny/ embarrassing story that happened during a shoot. It’s funny now but it was so sad when it happened. Once during the shooting of a song in Vizag (Jaya Janaki Nayaka) I was made to sit on a very huge and tall fake bicycle. Just before my close up it started raining and all the people who were holding the bicycle for support ran away, I was happily dancing sitting on that bicycle and in the middle of the shot, the entire cycle set fell down with me on it! What’s the recent item you striked off of your bucket list? Well, I just realised I don’t actually have a bucket list! But my recent holiday was magical, just surrounded by infinity pools and beautiful beaches. Ah, it was surreal! If I had a bucket list, this would totally be on it. What would you like to tell people who are romantically interested in you? You gotta wait! And wait. (winks) Which celeb would you like to work with in future, why? I’d love to work with so many people, to be honest. But if I had to mention one person, I would love to work with Ranveer Singh coz I feel like he is a powerhouse of energy and it would be awesome to be around that kind of infectious energy. From Tollywood it would be great to work with Allu Arjun, Ram Charan and Mahesh Babu. Tell us something that you have never told anyone else? So I love writing. When I say I like to write, it doesn’t mean anything specific like poems or stories. I like to write anything as per my mood. Also, another thing that no one knows about me is that I’m a total stationary junkie! When can we expect to hear wedding bells for Pragya Jaiswal? I have no clue right now but not very soon! (laughs)

RAPID FIRE Food or gym? Food

Morning person or night person? Both ! I really love early mornings but sometimes I enjoy late nights as well

Stilettoes or sneakers? Sneakers

Three things you never leave home without? Phone, wallet and water.

One director that you would love working with in the future? Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Favorite pastime? Netflix

Your celebrity crush? Ranbir Kapoor & Ranveer Singh Your biggest regret? I said no for a movie last year. I guess I shouldn’t have.

Most used curse word? F*** Favourite emoji?

DABBAWALA BIRYANI

This is exclusively a biryani joint and they couldn’t have had anything better! They serve so many varieties of biryanis that it’ll always make you crave for more. You’ve got to choose from Tehri – a vegetarian pulao sort of biryani, Hyderabadi biryani, Bombay biryani, Malabar biryani, Sindhi biryani and many others! It is super light on the pocket and super tasty as well. The vegetarians are in luck here as their paneer biryani is absolutely drool worthy. The paneer cubes are very soft and the caramelized onions on top add that bit of crunch to the biryani. Their packaging is also very good and comes with disposable spoons for that hassle-free office lunch. Sindhi biryani is another immensely tempting variant with the correct amount of masala and morsel sized chicken pieces. The spice levels are just perfect. A light breeze of the aroma will fill your senses with longing of eating all of it. You’ll be thanking us later. Where- Madhapur Contact –040-48599445

PARADISE FOOD COURT

With over 15 outlets in the city, this place needs no introduction, does it? The scintillating aroma of the long grains of rice mixed with the right balance of oil and spices, the hint of ghee and the perfectly cooked chunks of juicy mutton and chicken. You just cannot resist the savor of their signature biryani. There can never be enough adjectives to describe the heavenly taste of the biryani here. I don’t know for you, but my dinner is sorted for tonight! One hasn’t been to Hyderabad if they haven’t come here at least once to relish on biryani. It is the literal paradise on earth for biryani and other equally delightful dishes. Where- Secunderabad, Himayathnagar, Necklace Road Contact- 08977011117

BEHROUZ BIRYANI

Perhaps my favorite one here, Behrouz biryani is the most ‘hatke’ biryani in Hyderabad, in a good way though! The newcomer of the city, Behrouz Biryani’s preparations would be instantly identified by their mithai-like garnish of almond flakes, raisins and cardamom and the intense aroma of kewra. It is called the royal biryani and I can assure you that it is so in all aspects, drizzled with almonds on the top with boneless chicken pieces in the biryani – squishy and succulent. The Dumgosht biryani stands out by virtue of the unmistakable flavour of slow-cooked mutton. The Murgh Makhani biryani is mildly smoky. You can feast on it at home itself as it’s a delivery only service through online orders. It’s available on zomato, swiggy and UberEats and delivers to almost every location. The roots of this version of biryani is apparently Turkish cum Persian and as an Irani myself, I can vouch for its authenticity. There are also a number of short tales pertaining to the fictional side of the backstory of its innovation on their website which you can read and enjoy. Let’s Celebrate Good Energy Well, to keep up with your fitness regimes, Tulip is celebrating International Yoga day on June 21. The United Nations declared 21 June as International Yoga day, in the December of 2014. What is yoga? It must be meaning different things to different people. For me, it is a balance in lifestyle, and for my friend it is a way of life. Because she is a master yogini. Not all of can be committed to fitness, you see. But, my perspective towards maintaining a healthier lifestyle, and a balance in life has changed. I’ve started to take it more seriously for a few months now, thanks to what learning about Yoga did to me. In layman’s terms, and no, I am not using any jargons here, Yoga is simply the unity of the mind, the body, and the soul. Yes, that is it. No Greek and Latin used. If you have a busy schedule, and cannot spend a lot of time in the gym, weight training like your friends, yoga is a blessing. You can perform yoga whenever you want to, wherever you want to. No expensive gym fees, no infrastructure needed. All you need, is a quiet space, and a mat. Now, I’ve got the opportunity to interview some really amazing yogis from the city. Listen to what they have got to say. - By Tanvi Kesari

Founder, Yoga Tattva, E-RYT yoga alliance registered teacher For how long have you been practising Yoga? I have been practising Yoga for 12 years now. I’ve started teaching only 5 years ago.

Is yoga a way of life, or to exercise and meditate? Yoga is a way of life . Whatever you practise on the mat transcends to what you do off the mat , in your daily life . Asana is just one of the benefits but Yoga is much more and beyond the physical body. What has yoga done to you as a person? Yoga has helped me look inward and calm my mind before I act. There are days when I lose control, just like any normal human would, but, practising Yoga helps me get back on to my toes. What type of Yoga do you teach? I teach Hatha yoga mainly and add ashtanga and Iyengar styles, depending on the vibe of the class. What do you prefer/enjoy about this particular type of yoga? Hatha yoga is dynamic . It seeps into the body first and then into system . It keeps me focused due to its intensity. It also helps tone my

How did you get started? I was a dancer who wanted to increase flexibility. That is how I predominantly started practising some basic Yoga. But, I gave up mid way since I left to the UK for my Master’s degree. Thank the holy heavens that I took it up again. Do you think yoga is more mental/physical? Yoga is beyond the mental, and the physical forms. It is some sort of a cosmic paradise. Practising regularly can lead you to discover the ultimate truth about yourself. Where to find Ramya? GURPREET KAUR

WELLNESS

Yoga Instructor

For how long have you been practising Yoga? I have been practicing yoga for about 5 years now, and teaching for 4. Is yoga a way of life, or to exercise and meditate? I’d say that yoga is a way of life - but the way to realise that is through Asana practice and pranayama- which is usually what constitutes a yoga class. As an instructor, while I can preach that Yoga is to be practised off the mat as well, I can’t force my students into it. They have to realise it themselves, and they do through practice. So even if someone comes to the class for exercise, I can only give them a glimpse that yoga is more than that. What has yoga done to you as a person? Yoga has changed me in countless ways. From giving me confidence, purpose and drive it has shaped me into who I am today. It enabled me to switch my career plan from the usual graduation-job-MBA, and get a YTTC (Yoga Teacher Training Certificate) immediately after my undergrad. I started teaching and haven’t looked back since. Just a very small example of how yoga changed me a girl who could never make it on time for a 9am class in college was able to get up at 4:30am to travel 15kms to take an hour or class! What type of Yoga do you teach? I am certified to teach Hatha and Ashtanga Yoga. I teach something that is a mix of both - you can call it Power Yoga or Vinyasa Flow. We also sometimes engage in partner yoga - which is a crowd favourite! What do you prefer/enjoy about Yoga? What I like about teaching is the creativity and freedom to shape the class plan as per your wish - so my classes are never the same. I constantly keep mixing it up and changing themes - maybe someday we’d do an animal flow workout for warm up and then go on to yoga. Sometimes we do static exercises like wall sits or planks between suryanamaskars. How did you get started? I practicing yoga in my final year of college. Like everyone else who enters a yoga class - I wanted to lose weight. But I had an amazing teacher who would answer all my doubts about asanas and how they help the body with logical explanations. This, along with the results and changes in my mind - got me much more dedicated. After graduating, I made upmy mind to do this for a career. It hasn’t been easy- it’s not something I’d recommend unless you have that passion or drive towards yoga. Ironically, yoga instructors have less and less time to practice yoga as we take on more classes. I think one has to be prepared to sacrifice something for the greater good. For example, if I have to give up my morning practice at sunrise to be able to take class- then I’d do it in a heartbeat. Do you think yoga is more mental/physical? It is both, neither and more. It’s a journey. When you start out on this journey it’s physical. You’re contorting your body into shapes it has never been in before. But as you keep doing the asanas again and again, your body and muscles open up - which allows you to go deeper within yourself and take awareness to your breath. Once you master your breath in an asana - you’re ready for pranayama. Here is where actual yoga begins. Asana is just 1% of Yoga. As we dwelve deeper and deeper into yoga - we unravel layers of ourselves that go beyond the physical and mental lines. Something deep within you changes you find yourself giving up things you thought you could never live without. Yoga is definitely more than physical or mental - those are just pit stops along the way. What is the destination? I’ll tell you when I getthere, but I’m in no hurry. Goes International!

All through our lives, we have come across the fact that India is a multi cultural, multi religious, tolerant nation. With such brotherhood, India has also housed several expatriates, or more commonly known as ‘expats’. To bring you closer to what an expat is, and how they are living in your own city, I have interviewed few wonderful individuals from various parts of the world. Let’s explore their experiences, and know of what they feel like about the city that we have been living in, forever now!

Jane Erglis,

Housewife

American living in Hyderabad What is your country of Origin? We are American from NYC area, but we lived in Shanghai before we moved to India. My husband is Persian mix and I’m Korean and Latvian mix. What do you best like about living in Hyderabad? We think it’s very convenient. There are good hospitals and schools. The weather is great. The traffic is manageable (compared to other cities). The international airport allows us to move easily in Asia. For how long have you been living in Hyderabad ? We have lived here for over 16 months. What does your daily life look like? Has moving to Hyderabad affected your work? I don’t work but I have been able to go to school here for yoga and Gemmology. Most days when I’m not in school I’m managing the household. My husband works a lot that is the nature of his business. He’s lucky though that Indian employers value family time so he has been more available to us. What was your first big “aha” about the culture here? I think it was the cows! We were in a traffic jam and it was because of the cows. What do you miss most while you are living in Hyderabad? My Korean grocery store! How did people (of Hyderabad) see you? The reception has been pleasant and welcoming. Sometimes we’re asked to take selfies, but we’ve lived in China before, so we were used to that! What were the first few days like? They were so hot! It was a bit of adjustment because we had to live in 58 JUNE, 2019 TULIP

a service apartment. The kids didn’t have their toys, it was rough. How would you sum up your first six months? It was just so busy. I feel we always had to register something. What do you most like and dislike about Hyderabad? I like that it’s a mix between old and new. It’s getting so modern and hip from the time we are here! What I dislike is the speed of service at some places, but in the states we also have slower service in South too! Do you have any local favorite foods and places that you like visiting? We love Karachi Bakery’s biscuits and Mithai. The chaat at Almond House - ‘Gol Gappa’ is amazing! We love mango season too! Our favorite bakery is Conçu and Eclaire! There are too many to list! There’s no shortage of good food here!

Amanda Solmundson,

Canadian living in Hyderabad What is your country of Origin? Canada What do you best like about living in Hyderabad? I love the variety of spicy food, its all so delicious! Food is cheaper here which is nice. For how long have you been living in Hyderabad? Almost 2 years! What does your daily life look like? Has moving to Hyderabad affected your work? My daily life consists of practicing yoga. I have my 300-hour yoga teacher training and I completed my programs here in Hyderabad at Bodhi Yoga Institute. I want to open my own yoga retreat in Thailand one day. I will also be perusing an eyelash extension certificate next! I like learning new things. I also paint in my spare time, it’s nice and calming. What was your first big “aha” about the culture here? Probably seeing all the beautiful Sarees and wondering how I can learn how to wear them; I tried a few times but can’t get the hang of it. Also seeing the Rickshaws, they don’t have those in Canada. What is your experience like with learning the language? I don’t really know any Telugu, but I do know a little bit of Hindi. What do you miss most while you are living in Hyderabad? I miss my family and friends, but I really miss a dish called Poutine. It’s French fries with cheese curds and a hot gravy sauce poured on top. It melts in your mouth and tastes sooo good. Google it! How did people (of Hyderabad) see you? I’m sure I look very different over here, you almost feel like a celebrity here because everyone stares at you and wants to take selfies with you ha-ha. What were the first few days like? We stayed in a hotel and I was nervous because I wasn’t sure what to expect here being in a new country, but my partner assured me it would be okay. He lived here earlier, for years so he had the experience. I haven’t had any problems, though. How would you sum up your first 6 months? We stayed in hotel rooms a fair bit until we managed to find a place and slowly started filling it with furniture. We made new friends, thanks to an expat Facebook group. Hyderabad is huge compared to the little town of Gimli with only 2000 people. What do you most like and dislike about Hyderabad? I like the hot weather, back in Canada it can get very cold, so it’s a nice welcome change. What I don’t like is seeing all the garbage everywhere, it breaks my heart seeing that. Do you have any local favorite foods and places you like visiting? My favorite dish to eat here is Chicken 555 from Punjabi Family Dhaba. I love spicy food and theirs is the best I’ve had so far! I also like to go to Farzi Café, they have a good ambience with yummy food and cocktails, would recommend.

Canadian living in Hyderabad What is your country of Origin? Canada What do you best like about living in Hyderabad? The warm weather, and the mild monsoon season. For how long have you been living in Hyderabad? 18 months What does your daily life look like? Has moving to Hyderabad affected your work? My typical daily life is working for Spice Jet, being picked up at 5am, a 40-minute commute to work and then flying 4 or 5 flights all over India and usually coming back home 9 hours later or perhaps over nighting in any of the major cities in India. What was your first big “aha” about the culture here? This being my second time around, 7th year in India, and Hyderabad being the 4th city, I’ve lived in here, there is little that surprises me here anymore. However, I am always impressed with people’s ability to overcome all kinds of adversity and survive in India in a way not imagined by those back home. What is your experience like with learning the language? I have managed to learn and speak some Hindi during my time here, with English and Hindi being the languages of choice at work. Without much chance to speak Telugu , it still remains a mystery to me. What do you miss most while you are living in Hyderabad? Mostly family and friends, but also the wide-open spaces and quiet surroundings we have back home. How did people (of Hyderabad) see you? Mostly they see me as a curiosity, being a foreigner with several tattoos, there are a lot of stares, requests for selfies and sometimes even children chasing after me in the street. It seems to make them happy, so I’m always willing to oblige. What were the first few days like? First few days in Hyderabad I was straight to work without much chance to see anything other than the hotel and airport. How would you sum up your first 6 months? The first 6 months in Hyderabad was mostly settling in and moving from a hotel to a flat, slowly accumulating all the things necessary to live comfortably here, meeting new friends and finding our place here. What do you most like and dislike about Hyderabad? I like the cheap living, the weather and the food. I dislike the noise and pollution. Do you have any local favorite foods and places you like visiting? When we have visitors we always take them for a Hyderbad Briyani of course, and we also enjoy going to the many restaurant bars in Gachibowli and Banjara Hills when I get a rare night off. 60 JUNE, 2019 TULIP

American living in Hyderabad What is your country of Origin? I am from the US - San Francisco Bay Area, but spent the last 13 yrs in NYC. Raghu spent the first 6 yrs of his life in Rochester, NY, moved to HYD until age 17 and then was in NYC from 2000 - 2017. What do you best like about living in Hyderabad? The History of the culture and art and the fresh flowers everywhere. For how long have you been living in Hyderabad ? Since Sept, 2017. What does your daily life look like? Has moving to Hyderabad affected your work? Daily Life: We’ve learned that when you have young kids the core of life is very much the same no matter where in the world you are, it’s still a lot of “hurry up and get your shoes on, we’re going to miss the school bus!” in the mornings. Work: Part of the reason we moved here was because Raghu wanted to work with his father who founded LV Prasad Eye Institute. Raghu is the Executive Director of Emerging Technologies at LVPEI. We are constantly amazed at the pace at which HYD is growing, especially in the technology sector and the sheer volume of scale is something we don’t see in the US. What was your first big “aha” about the culture here? Rae was somewhat familiar with the culture in HYD, she had visited several times prior to moving here. But when she went to purchase a box of Cheerios and saw that the price was 995 INR (3x the pice in the states) she knew she was a long way from home. Oh and she’ll never

get used to the madness on the roads - the traffic and the buffalos! What is you experience like with learning the language? Raghu speaks Telugu fluently, and the kids are so young they are picking words and phrases up so quickly. Most people we’ve met speak English so language has not been a huge barrier for us. What do you miss most while you are living in Hyderabad? My family & friends in the US and having 4 different seasons. I did a lot of complaining when I was in NYC about the cold winters, and now I miss my jacket, coats and scarfs. How did people (of Hyderabad) see you? Everyone here has been incredibly friendly and welcoming. What were the first few days like? The first few days felt like vacation and so did the first few months. We didn’t start to feel settled until about 6 months after living here. How would you sum up your first six months? - A roller coaster. There have been so many highs and a few lows (but mostly highs) What do you most like and dislike about Hyderabad? like: the easy access to travel throughout Asia and living close to family dislike : the heat in May, it is unbearable. Do you have any local favourite foods and places that you like visiting? Sage Farm Cafe and Conçu.

Kim Reumkens,

Dutch living in Hyderabad What is your country of Origin? I was born and raised in the southern part of the Netherlands. It used to take me 5 minutes to cycle to Germany. What do you like best about living in Hyderabad? I love all the big smiles, and people are so generous here. They also have a lot of patience, but on the other hand that means I have to have a lot of patience too, of course. I love looking out of the window while we’re driving: Hyderabad is buzzing, people everywhere (except on Sundays) and animals. In India we share the roads with the animals. For how long have you been living in Hyderabad? In August 2017 we moved here, so that is me and my husband Marco and our 4 daughters: Philippa 14, Sisselie 12, Linden 9 and Elora 2. For the first 3 months we stayed in a hotel and then we moved to an apartment in the busy city. The first time that I tried to go for a walk with my baby in her stroller was an adventure. All the animals, the tuktuk’s, the motorbikes and the honking. And the lack of sidewalks, but that got compensated by the number of holes in the road. Then I understood why I was the only one with a stroller. It is much easier to carry your baby here. What does your daily life look like? Has moving to Hyderabad affected your work? I prepare all the food for my family myself, but there is no cleaning up after: yeah, I love it! In the morning I drive my 2 youngest girls to their school, while the 2 older ones take the bus. Back home I do a workout cause I still live in this fantasy of having a bikini body one day, although as time goes on, I realize that the chances are getting slimmer by the week. At noon I pick up my youngest and while she takes a nap, I write. I write columns for a Dutch magazine about my life here (only good things!). I am part of the PTA in my kids’ school, so I spend some time on that. And I keep in touch with my former boss in New Jersey where I worked as a holistic nutritionist and do some work for her. When my girls come home, I spend time with them. Almost every day we go to the community pool where they swim and I still keep dream of having a bikini body. What was your first big ‘AHA’ about the culture here? Never say what you don’t want to have, just emphasize what it is you want. Keep it short and sweet. If you mention what you don’t want, that is exactly what you’re gonna get. And Indian people are very patriotic, which is a good thing, but I will never say “I don’t like dal” again, as I can not handle the disappointment on their friendly faces. What is your experience with learning the language? I use English as far as it goes my hands and feet, and a sympathetic smile (and if necessary, a discouraged face). What do you miss most while you’re living in Hyderabad? Fresh, crispy air. The beach. Cycling or walking in nature. Western bands performing. People waiting for their turn and not trying to cut the line. And mindfulness about the environment. But I don’t miss cleaning the house myself. How do people of Hyderabad see you? No idea, maybe as a giraffe (as I am tall). What were the first few days like? First week I gained 2 kilos because of all the delicious Indian sweets. And the honking made me almost paranoid. How would you sum up your first 6 months? 62 JUNE, 2019 TULIP

I gained 3 more kilos because of all the delicious Indian sweets and then I stopped eating them and lost 4. One is left to remind me. First 6 months were not the easiest because everything is very different. But luckily you get used to (almost) everything and now I am at home here. I remember the first time I saw a humongous cockroach in a bakery and I screamed to inform everyone about this monster invading the pastries. People looked up, realized it was ‘just’ a cockroach and then carried on, leaving me feeling confused and later silly about it. Do you have any local favourite foods and places you like to visit? I love biryani. In the beginning I could not understand the excitement about it and I thought it was ‘rice’ but I think I got Biryani brainwashed because now I love it! And samosa’s and pani puri. I actually like many foods here, but I never know what they’re called. I really like the food in the Farzi Café, but I don’t go there often enough because of the distance ( or rather the time it takes to get there). We all like going to Zega upstairs in the Sheraton and at Prego in the Westin I always have the mushroom risotto when I need a biryani break.

Turkey in Hyderabad: Developing Ties between India-Turkey Consul General of the Republic of Turkey talks to Tulip about Hyderabad’s role in improving Turkey-India relations. With Turkey’s geographical location between the East and the West, their friendly relations with almost all countries are of utmost importance. “Our relations have been improving a lot with India” says, Adnan Altay Altinörs, the Consul General of the Republic of Turkey. You’ve been the Consul General of Turkey in Hyderabad for over a year. How do you like staying in Hyderabad? Hyderabad is a very hospitable city. It embraces a lot of cultures, communities and different people. Everyday, I learn something new about Hyderabad and I’m very excited to spend my professional and personal time here. What is the best thing you like about Indian Culture? The food here is great! There are different cultures, languages, religions and communities. India is indeed very diverse. I’ve been to different places, different cities in the country and they have all left different impressions in my mind. What are some plans that the Turkish Consulate in Hyderabad has taken to encourage people from Hyderabad to visit Turkey? There’s a rising interest in people from India to visit Turkey. This year we expect 200,000 Indians to visit the country. Indians are more inclined towards cultural tourism where they engage with history, traditions, arts and many other aspects of culture. In this context, Turkey offers many opportunities for foreign visitors. I am delighted that the Turkish visas granted to Indians in the first three months of this year are three times more than the visas that were granted in the first three months of 2018, and six times more than that in 2017. I have met a lot of travel agencies in Hyderabad to discuss different means through which we can improve tourism. We offer our highest quality services to Indian weddings in Turkey, in terms of infrastructure and hotels, which are incompatible with many other countries. We also take steps to ensure that the costs are comfortable. There are several spots in Turkey that I encourage everyone to visit. Apart from Istanbul, Cappadocia, with its natural and artificial sights along with underground cities and churches, is a one-of-a-kind place to visit. We advise our Indian friends to visit Pamukkale and Ephesus as well. Antalya is another must visit place. Anatolia, the Asian part of the country, is a cradle of civilizations and hosts the first human settlements and many other historical sites to see. What is the best time for visiting Turkey? Late-June to early-September is the high season for visiting. It’s summer in Turkey then. Excluding the winter, in months of April, May, October and November, Indian tourists will receive the best cultural experience and services of Turkey.

What role does the Turkish Consulate in Hyderabad play to strengthen India – Turkey relations? We are trying to improve relations in various dimensions with India. I have visited many universities, colleges and schools to seek for good programs like student and scholarship exchange. We are also working on introducing Turkish languages in some colleges. When it comes to business and trade, we encourage construction companies to make partnerships. We have commendable experience in the construction sector and I see that with our capacity there will definitely be more investments in India in construction and many other sectors like manufacturing, automotive, pharmaceuticals, IT. We need to work more with promoting culture. We organized a Turkish Food Festival last year which was highly recognized. We boast of a big food culture and a diverse cuisine with our rich history of our descent from the Ottoman Empire. I also want Classical Turkish Music to be introduced in the City and we are working on it. Are there any places in Hyderabad that remind you of Turkey? Yes, the palaces – Chowmahalla Palace, Falaknuma Palace –remind me a lot of Turkey with their rich architectural magnificence. The Golconda Fort is another architectural sight that reminds me of Turkey. We have a lot of Forts in Turkey and some of them are still in a good shape. The embassy of Turkey is in Delhi and there are two consulates, one in Mumbai and the other in Hyderabad. Do you have any further plans regarding expansion to other cities? It seems like this is enough for now. We might consider expansion in the future as our relations, in all sectors, with India get even better. I think it is important that we grab an opportunity, economic and cultural, when we see it to make the relations even stronger and better. “We have a unique place in the world to play” - Adnan Altay Altinörs, Consul General of the Republic of Turkey. The lake is always calm and is sure to give everyone the mental peace they require to carry on with their lives in a world that focuses on fastly moving forward. The Secret Lake was a source of drinking water to the Golconda Fort residents during the reign of the QutubShahi Dynasty (1518-1687).

There was no visible access to the lake and was kept hidden for the protection of the royal family from possible poisoning of the water.

Hidden by Granite Rocks older than 2500 million years surrounding the lake, spread across an area of 63 acres of land, the lake was kept a secret for twenty years.

Today, visitors can marvel at its serene ambience, adventure activities, amphitheatre and cafes that developed in and around the Lake to give people a glimpse into the historical and aesthetic beauties this City holds. TULIP - JUNE, 2019 65

Sona Mohapatra fires on Salman Khan Calling him the epitome of toxic masculinity, singer Sona Mohapatra criticised actor Salman Khan for his obsession with calling out actress Priyanka Chopra, at every event regarding his upcoming film Bharat. In her tweets, Sona called him out for taking low-brow digs at the actress and said she had better things to do with her life. It all started in November last year, when the makers of Bharat announced Priyanka’s departure from the film due to personal reasons aka her grand wedding to American pop singer Nick Jonas. This did not seem to go down well with the film’s lead actor Salman Khan, who hasn’t left a single opportunity to take a jibe at Priyanka. Actress Katrina Kaif, Priyanka’s replacement in the film has been seen at many such occasions trying to avoid taking her name, but all in vain as Salman seemed to do the honours every single time.

Arjun Kapoor and Malika Arora make it official In a rare public appearance together, actors Arjun Kapoor and Malika Arora stepped out in coordinated outfits for a screening of Arjun’s latest film, India’s Most Wanted. Talking to the media Arjun said it was extremely comfortable for him to finally reveal their relationship to the world thanks to the media’s respectful and understanding behavior. Malaika and Arjun were first linked two years ago, and they continued to step out together in and around Mumbai on multiple occasions since. While it was speculated over recent weeks that a wedding is on the cards for the rumored couple, Arjun denied all such rumors, saying he would let the world know whenever he ties the knot. Malaika announced her separation from ex-husband Arbaaz Khan in March 2016. They were granted a divorce by the Bandra family court in May 2017. They have one son together. Meanwhile, Arbaaz has confirmed that he is dating Italian model Giorgia Andriani but wants to take this relationship further without any rush.

KL Rahul dating Aalia Bhatt’s BFF?

Tom Holland does it again

Trust Spider-Man actor Tom Holland to give out spoilers. Many marvel fans highly anticipate Holland’s interviews in hopes of getting some insider info. Marvel themselves took precautions during the filming and promotions of the blockbuster Avengers: Endgame, by ensuring Holland never did a solo interview, pairing him with their best secretkeeper, Benedict Cumberbatch; but seem to have failed to do so with his next release, SpiderMan: Far from Home. The actor at a recent interview revealed that Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal is not a villain, as anticipated by fans, but a friend that accompanies him throughout the film. Marvel fans were taken by surprise at this revelation. The new detail also indicates that Avengers: Endgame has a heavy influence on the narrative, giving fans more and more material to theorize.

Is this the start of yet another cricketer-Bollywood romance? Cricketer KL Rahul was spotted hanging out with Aalia Bhatt’s childhood friend and actress Akansha Ranjan Kapoor a few days before leaving for England. This isn’t the first time the pair have been spotted together. The 25-year-old Akansha is a popular figure on social media with over one lakh followers on Instagram. She recently featured in Ankit Tiwari’s music video Tere Do Naina opposite Aparshakti Khurana. In April this year, Akansha posted a picture on Instagram with the batsman and her actor-friend Athiya Shetty on her Instagram account. Apart from Akansha, Rahul has previously been linked to actress Niddhi Aggerwal who strongly denied the rumors. Meanwhile, Rahul is in England for the World Cup and is being hailed as a strong contender for the number four spot.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

India’s Most Wanted Based on true events, India’s Most Wanted tells the story of Prabhat (Arjun Kapoor), an unlikely hero who leads his team to track down India’s most wanted terrorist. While the sentiment of nationalism and unsung heroes is spot on, the story falls flat in most places. Arjun Kapoor does justice to his role, but the spotlight is stolen by a stellar performance by Jeetendra Shastri. Amit Trivedi fails to provide the required support, with lackluster background scores and forgettable music. The cinematography deserves a word of praise, especially in the tense and gripping moments. Overall, the film while having the right amount of patriotism does not compare to Uri, which restarted the trend of nationalist movies in Bollywood.

ALADDIN There might be no one who hasn’t heard of the tale of the charming thief serenading the vivacious, out-going princess on a magic carpet, accompanied by the big, goofy blue genie, who pops out of a magic lamp, thanks to the classic 1992 animated hit. Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin is thankfully still the same magical ride. Will Smith, taking over Robin Williams as the Genie made the character his own, leaving no room for comparison. Even in the case of Marwan Kenzari’s Jaffar, the character feels more like an anti-hero, than a quintessential Disney baddie, thanks to Kenzari’s brilliantly terrifying performance. However, while they did have their moments, Mena Massoud’s Aladdin and Naomi Scott’s Jasmine fail to make an impact due to the pressure of recreating their animated counterparts.

Sita Sita sees Kajal Aggarwal in the titular role of a menacingly materialistic career woman – the type of woman generally looked down upon by the society. She is somebody who doesn’t hesitate to go to any lengths for monetary gains. In one such pursuit, Sita agrees to be in a live-in relationship with MLA Basava Raju (SonuSood), who lusts after her. When she realizes she is in a bind, she seeks out to Ram (Bellamkonda Srinivas), a refreshingly innocent man, who grew up in a monastery; giving her a new perspective on life. While the movie starts as something new for the otherwise typical Telugu romance film audience, the talks of virtue and what makes a real man dampen that spirit, and the film ends up becoming a typical Telugu romance flick.
