Over a Cappuccino with Raai Laxmi

A foodie, a travel-buff, and an unexpectedly spiritual person, the super genuine and super talented Raai Laxmi talks about her start in the industry, her childhood, and how her upbringing helped her tackle some major things in life. Tell us something about yourself I am quite a transparent person, so whatever I do is out there. There is no second side to me just because I am an actor. Whatever I do, whatever I take a call on, everything is out there and that’s what people like about me; that I don’t put up a act. Apart from that, what people don’t know about me is that I am a spiritual person, although I don’t come across as one. You have been in the modelling and advertising industry from a very young age. When and how did you decide to enter the film industry? Advertising and movies happened at the same time for me. Modelling was just like a warm-up for me. I modelled for a mere period of 4 months, but I was always driven by the 26 JULY, 2019 TULIP

idea of glamour and used to take part in a lot of contests or anything related to the world of glamour. During my schooling and college I would indulge in a lot of activities and it was around that time that I landed an opportunity to join an acting course of Padmini Kohlapure’s school of acting. I believe it was this opportunity that fueled my modelling career and won me the Miss Karnataka crown, which is how it all began for me. Coming from a non filmy background it was obviously a struggle for me but it gets better with time. What is a typical day in Raai Laxmi’s Life? On a typical day you’d find me hopping 4-5 flights to different destinations because that’s how my life is, but if I’m home, you’d find me lazing around, playing and spending time with my pets and friends. There are 2 extremes to

me; when I’m working, I’m barely at home, but when I’m home I don’t see the light of the day, not even to gym. Your Instagram inspired many fans to work towards a body like yours, can you tell us how you maintain your fitness? I’m a broadly built person, so maintaining a body like this is a constant struggle for me and I work really hard towards it. so it has always been a constant struggle for me. If I ever had a competition in life, it would be between me and my weight. Initially I used to work out because I wanted to lose weight, now as I’ve kind of tuned my mind, I’ve started to enjoy my workouts because I do a variety of them. My workout isn’t the regular cardio and running on the treadmill. My workout now involves a lot of things that make me

feel good, in the form of sports, games or swimming. I love trekking as well! You admitted to being a tomboy in your childhood. Could you tell us a little bit about that? For the first half of my childhood, I looked like a boy because my dad kept me like a boy. Among my two older sisters, my parents always treated me like the boy child. Because of this, I had a behavioural pattern as a kid wherein I accepted myself as a boy. As I grew up, I started feeling out of place among my friends and felt like the odd one out because of my boyish traits. I remember crying to be what I was- a girl and wanting to grow my hair out when I was 9. But all said and done, there will always be a tomboyish spark within me. You are known for your bold choice of roles and dance numbers in Tollywood, while you have also worked in, say, the Malayalam industry with only superstars, would you have preferred a similar image in Tollywood as well? In industries like the Malayalam industry, I have worked only with superstars. But in Tollywood and a few other industries, I have actually been privileged to work with newcomers, mid-range actors and of course superstars. I’ve been there for so long, that I

LIFESTYLE |

actually got to act with most of them. So for me Malayalam has been the luckiest industry in terms of the ratio of successful films. It’s unreal and I’m thankful for the love I’ve received from the industry. Tollywood has obviously been the place where I got my kickstart and I’ve done so many different types of films; lots of hits and misses as part of my career. Collectively I’ve done more than 50 films and now I’ve made a move into Bollywood. You have been subject to a lot of controversies in the past. How have you come to deal with that? Yeah, controversies have made me their favourite child, that’s why I had no other go but to be strong and face it. A lot of things kept coming back to trouble me for a very long time. People would bring up stuff from the past and twerk it to make stuff up. I’m used to it now and I don’t take it as a damage because people now know who I am and what to believe. Tell us about a few of your upcoming projects. Right now I’m doing 6 films down south. One in Kannada, two Telugu films, two Tamil ones and also one Malayalam. So, I already have three projects on the floor, and I’m yet to start three. And since South keeps

me so busy, only if something really interesting and promising comes from Bollywood I can make time for it. South is where I come from so I don’t like to stop working here and do something else just for the sake of doing it. I would rather wait for something interesting to come up so I can carve a niche for myself in Bollywood.

Rapid Fire 3 things u dont leave home without My house keys, my phone and my bag. Food/Gym Food Selfie/Photoshoots Selfies. It’s so much easier. Favourite accessories I’m very fond of my Bags. SKIN DEEP | BEAUTY

We see pictures of beautiful women all around us, be it on Instagram, Twitter, on billboards and hoardings, or even your T.V. screens. For a very long time in our history beauty has followed the concept of fair and lovely, having a light complexion, without even a trace of a scar or a blemish was the painstakingly difficult standard women were forced to achieve. For the past few years, however, the Indian market seems to be changing. Women of all skin tones, scarred or unscarred, are now being accepted and encouraged. With several fashion weeks seeing dusky models taking to the ramps, various advertisements confidently featuring women with the so-called “imperfect” skin, and celebrities and influencers raising their voices for the cause with social movements like #nofilter and #nomakeup, more and more young girls across the country are now optimistic to set foot in formerly unapproachable industries. Here are a few young women who made a mark in the industry while standing strong in support of this new and liberating concept of beauty.

Sowmya Thanam, Model Instagram: @sowmya_thanam Being a model is never easy, but being a coloured model is twice the effort. There are many times when my clients tried to change the way I look. They used to want to make me look a shade or two lighter, and in the beginning, I didn’t say anything thinking that I won’t get any more modelling opportunities. But, as time went by, I started standing up for myself. Once I was called down for an audition by a Modelling agency. Everything was going on well until the lady told me that I had to get a ‘fairness treatment’ because dusky models aren’t really models. I walked out of there that very second and never looked back. Thankfully, it’s not the same anymore. People are starting to realise how there are different forms of beauty. Now, the industry is more accepting of people who look different, speak different, and have different features. We still have a long way to go, but we have already achieved so much. My tips for maintaining healthy skin would be for people who love junk food like me, which can be problematic when it comes to skin. Thankfully, I was blessed with good skin. But I keep myself hydrated and moisturise my skin whenever I can. I am more of natural look kind of person. So, I don’t wear makeup often. With my skin tone, it’s not easy to find the right foundation. My go to foundation is Fit me 330 Toffee and I’m more inclined towards dark coloured lipsticks.

Instagram: @sravyakothalanka Even in 2019, there still are hypocrites who treat dark skinned women like dust. Even now when I walk into any beauty or skincare store, they suggest me FAIRNESS creams and face washes first. I don’t even ask. We need to educate women about colourism and double standards. Personally, however I haven’t faced any issues. Since I use only my brain and voice, my looks don’t really matter. May be some people are biased about my appearance, because it’s unconventional, but I never faced problems particularly because of my colour. One thing I want to tell any girl aspiring to make a mark in the industry is, always strive to be the best version of yourself, no one else’s, and keep working without expecting immediate results. I don’t do much to maintain good skin. I have a big appetite and involuntarily drink a lot of water. I’m more of a home remedies person. I experiment with fruits, vegetables and natural ingredients at home whenever I want to pamper myself. And I’ve never been keen about makeup on myself. I’m just a liner-and-lipstick girl. My mum is my beauty doctor and I consider what she recommends. Recently she suggested me a beauty box from MARCUS SPURWAY. I love it.

Bhawana Nilap, Actor Instagram: @Instagrammer I am a dusky person. This colour in the film industry is a huge issue. But the modelling industry sees it as something beautiful and desirable. The restrictions in the film industry made me feel suffocated, but the modelling industry felt open and free. When I became Miss Fresher at my college, many people questioned, “How did she do it?” That girl is so dusky, there are so many girls who are fairer than her.” It didn’t matter to me. Because in the end I was the one standing there, successful. And they were left standing behind me and talking about me. So, if anyone wants to enter either the modelling or film industry now shouldn’t feel discouraged at all. The times are changing, and so are the people. For healthy skin I would suggest lots and lots of water and a fruit-induced diet. I don’t really use any products when I’m not on set. I think limiting your usage of make-up and letting your skin breathe is a great way to maintain healthy skin.

Greeshma Turakhia, Model, Interior Designer Instagram: @greeshma_ In the world of social media where everything’s perfect, as a model we really struggle to “Fit in”. Back in 2016, I was really chubby and due to my height (I’m 5’4) my insecurities really started to kick in. Last year, I suddenly had break outs due to an unhealthy lifestyle which also pushed me towards depression. And no skin care seemed to help. I’ve come to a realisation if you don’t feel good from the inside then it’s surely going to be seen from the outside. To all the women out there who are insecure of the way look, just speak up, believe in yourself and trust your inner voice. Don’t let anyone talk you out of what you know to be true.Eating and sleeping on time is so important, especially for women because we tend to get health issues sooner. Coming to the industry, I think we’re now in a modern era where dark is beautiful and colourism has become such a high fashion. Honestly, I’m so jealous of those girls who are out there with dusky skin, it’s so divine. And how they carry themselves is even more irresistible. We all have different skin types. My skin is usually very dry and sensitive. I don’t have a skin care routine but I always keep myself moisturised. I prefer home-remedies over products. I stick to my diet where I eat lots of raw boiled veggies, fruits and drink lots of water and 30 minutes of yoga or exercise is a must.

Raseeka Arul Kumar, Model Instagram: @the.styleseeker People approach me through my Instagram profile and on my Instagram there’s not really a lot of pictures of me as my real self, they’re all mostly pictures where my face is covered in makeup and nothing is really visible, so when they do look at me in real life they do say things like you have a lot of marks on your face and they do wonder how to manage it, but I think at the end of the day makeup and editing really manages the problem. I think the industry will, however, grow to accept it more because some people have already started doing that. They believe scars are a part of you and you shouldn’t be hiding them. Though few people have joined the bandwagon, I think it will reach a point where more people will believe in this. To have healthy skin, stick to the basics. Eat well, sleep well and moisturise. Do what works for you and not what is trending or popular. The brand that usually works for me is Maybelline, so most of my products are Maybelline, but like I said, one should choose what works best for them.

Fanny Gandhi, Model Instagram: @bigeyedbabe This was a major issue a long time back, but people are now understanding that beauty doesn’t come in one colour. I have seen so many dark coloured models ruling the industry. Khoudia Diop is one of my fav models, who was bullied for her dark colour. Now, she is the queen of modelling. While I have faced many problems in my modelling stint, none of them were because of my skin or my colour. And I hope I do not face them in future. As a kid I always thought modelling is something which is not made for the normal girls. You know, you have to be that drop-dead gorgeous girl with a perfect figure and height to be a model. It always attracted me towards itself, but I did not have guts to be one. But when I entered college, I saw myself amidst pretty women from different backgrounds, breaking all the stereotypes made me think that I can also be a part of it. And seeing those ladies, just as normal as me, made me think if they can do it, so can I. My skincare routine is majorly to drink lots of water. I try to drink at least 1 bottle of water every hour. I avoid junk food, eat more fruits and salads and green vegetables. I try to use less chemicals on my skin so I don’t really have a go-to product. One thing I can say for sure is do not try new products on your skin. First read about it. See if it gives any side effects to your skin or not.

Bahaar Gupta, Model Instagram: @bahaar_2312 I started modelling pretty recently and so far, I must say, my journey has been smooth sailing. When I initially started getting offers, I couldn’t really pose well, but eventually I learnt. I have so far not faced any issues be it related to my colour or any issue like breakouts or acne. So, I believe things have definitely changed. While some people choose to stay in the age-old mentality of fair is beautiful and a model should be “perfect”, most people have moved on. If I had to advice someone on how to maintain good skin, I would definitely suggest washing your face three times a day and drink a lot of water and eat more and more fruits. I swear by a few products and stick to them. Lakme Absolute perfect radiance night cream before sleep, and Lakme Absolute skin gloss for everyday use. MCaffeine Naked and Rich Choco body butter works wonders as a moisturiser. Finally, I really trust Biotique Botanicals’ under-eye cream to prevent eye bags. But of course, people should make sure any product suits them before trying it.

EXCLUSIVE |

Together to Curb Climate Change Arun Krishnamurthy on what Hyderabad can do for the Planet The Environmentalist Foundation of India (E.F.I) has been hosting numerous activities at lakes in and around Hyderabad with school orientation programs, street plays, and awareness wall-paintings across the city as an effort to try preserving nature, consequently protecting the physiological and psychological bond that humans share with the environment. Arun Krishnamurthy, an environmental activist and the founder of the organization, has a lot to say about what we, as people of the City, can do to make it better and an inspiration to others. What are some of the most evident and alarming symptoms of Climate Change that we see in the City today? Climate change without a doubt is a very daunting concern today as we experience its impacts affecting our day-to-day lives. In the city of Hyderabad, the most evident symptoms seem to be the fact that there is an unusual change in the weather pattern; summers start earlier and are much hotter than the previous ones, winters are shorter with few days being extremely cold and others being moderately warmer. There have also been abnormal fluctuations in the monsoon as well as the city received fewer rains or unusual set of varying rains. This has caused a rather huge impact on damages caused to agriculture. It is not unknown to people that every day we are only getting closer to the doom of our planet if we continue to practice the things we do now. How do we tackle this ignorance in such cases, be it at a personal or global scale? Do you think the possibility of life on Mars encourages this ignorance? In most of the cases, rather than ignorance, it seems to be the lack of knowledge about the situation around us or the lack of interest. According to a study, 84.9% of the people of Hyderabad do realize that the changes taking place are due to a phenomenon called Climate Change. But how many of us are ready and willing to work towards a solution for this is the real question. To tackle such ignorance, we must make sure we are well aware of the situation happening around us and start acting upon it. It is very easy to play the blame game and point fingers at others to say who’s at fault for all this. But, it is important that we avoid such things and start working at solutions for the problem. Certainly, ignorance only leads to great downfall. So rather than ignoring the situation, it’s time we face the facts and work together to bring about the change we want to see in our society. We must not depend on a solution such as the possibility of life on another planet because that would mean we have given up on ourselves. Our planet has done nothing but ceaselessly providing to our needs and we must do justice to it by giving back to Our Mother Nature. Do you think economic, cultural and social status play an important role in the response that people have towards climate change? How can a change be brought about in this? Yes, it does. Society has shaped us in such a way that our status and our background have given us a different approach to concerns such as Climate Change. There are a group of people who always feel that the job will get done by someone else, and they don’t need to get involved. But in reality, that’s not always true. Sometimes we must initiate the work and work alongside others to get it done. There are several NGOs that are presently working towards conserving the environment in the city of Hyderabad and certainly joining such organizations can bring

about a change in the way we perceive different things. For example, there are several lakes in and around the city of Hyderabad such as the Kapra lake, Gangaram Cheruvu, which are pristine water bodies with beautiful flora and fauna but are today in a very bad condition due to our negligence. A lot of people are really disturbed, physically and mentally, with the declining quality of life for all life forms on Earth because of human activities but are stuck when it comes to acting on it because of a lack of direction. How can each person significantly contribute to making the planet better? It is the job of those who are well informed and aware of the situation to guide those who aren’t. It is important that we make sure our voices are heard in the public and get everybody involved in the process. Each person can contribute by working for a cause and this can be done through several means, such as, working with the Government- filing pleas, cases, etc.; joining NGOs that are working towards a particular goal that suits your interest, or even start your own set of group, it can be your family, or your friends or your community or your colleagues from work. Once you are a part of a group of people, getting work done and word out gets much simpler and will seem much more achievable than it was before. There is definitely very little time left for the human race to make things right, what are some of the immediate measures that we all, collectively, as a city, must take to ensure the survival of the planet? Although we do have very little time left with us, it’s never too late to try. Over the years, we have been ignorant of what’s been happening around us and that has led to us to the current scenario today, with Climate Change being such an alarming problem. We must not stay dormant as we have all these years and start acting on solutions. It can be on something small such as planting tree saplings in your area and cleaning your street or do something on a bigger level, such as joining an organization and participate in nature conservation activities regularly. While doing this, we must make sure we are true to our cause and spread the word to others and get them involved to create a huge impact and serve as a model for other cities in the world to follow. It is important that we realize that we belong to the environment to imbibe an inclination towards protecting it. We also must understand that the environment we live in belongs to all living beings and it is our responsibility to help protect all beings. “There are so many things that we can do, but it is important that we start working on them.” Contact: +918121738296

Superstar Rising - As told to Masooma Fatima How was working with Vijay Devarakonda and the whole Taxiwala experience? Working with Vijay was an amazing experience. Every shot was a learning experience for me. Taxiwaala was my first every film and I was obviously nervous in the initial few days and he always lightened up the mood to help me ease into it. Vijay is someone who’s really spontaneous and that kind of inspires you to up your game as well. Other than all that, I love how he seems to have a visio and works towards it. You admitted to being a fan of Aishwarya Rai. Was she a major inspiration for your passion for acting? As a kid I was enamoured by her beauty, talent and intelligence and so, I really was a huge fan. However, just like most kids, I didn’t quite know what I wanted to do when I grow up and that’s probably why I wasn’t quite inspired by anyone. It was only after I set on a career path that I slowly figured out that I was inspired by various people for different aspects of life. Were your parents supportive of your choice to enter the film industry? Yes, I am not sure if this is what they dreamt for me but once I decided to take the plunge, they have always been supportive. In fact, my mother is the person I always go to for fashion advice because she’s an expert in the arena. One of my most special moments will remain the dress I wore for the Pre-Release Event of Taxiwaala because she made it! Who is you biggest celebrity crush? Is there any film of theirs you would have loved to be a part of? It’s Allu Arjun and wish I had been a part of the film Arya. 38 JULY, 2019 TULIP

A little Off-beat but still on track Honestly, how many of us have been wanting to do something else apart from what we are already doing? Well, it is never too late to bask in the glory of your dreams that you would achieve only by working towards it. Here are those legends, and I call them that, because they have not failed themselves and their ambitions are are doing what they absolutely love. Get ready to get inspired.

Veeru Potla, Writer, Film Maker Veeru Potla is one of the prominent names in the South Indian film industry, and for a lesser known fact in Bollywood as well. He is the writer for movies like Varsham and Nuvvosthanante Nenoddantana which have been remade in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Oriya languages. Adding on to his successes, his debut film was a super hit, and he has never turned back ever since. How did you come to know that you wanted to be a film maker? Ever since my childhood, I have been reading books beyond my age and comprehension. Hailing from a village in Andhra Pradesh, I have been schooled in a Telugu medium. I have grown up to realize that I wanted to do something much different and beyond what my peers were pursuing to become. An ardent movie buff that I was, I discovered solace in cinema and writing. That is when I had made up my mind to move to Hyderabad in search of myself. What is your greatest inspiration to move from your safe haven and struggle from scratch? Ayn Rand’s Fountainhead, and Tilak’s stories about life have moved me. I discovered my intentions and my true self when I read stories close to my reality. I transcend into long walks to understand the book and reflect those characters on my life. And remember, it is only when you move from your comfort, and see life in its true sense will you find great stories.

50 JULY, 2019 TULIP

What is your take on filmmaking? Who inspires you? Film making is a very simple job, especially when you are a director. The essence of film making is in its script. If a film is a success, it means the script has been worked upon, and reworked and worked again, until the film maker is able to live every character he has penned down. One formula in life for film makers is, If you want to find inspiration, follow the maker, and find his maker. The maker’s maker is the key to great films. Never stop yourself from watching films of those directors that your idol idolizes. It will only lead to a greater source of imagination. What is your advice to aspiring film makers? It is not always advisable to start off as an assistant to a director. With whatever money you have in your pocket, pack a bag and start off your journey to find yourself. For great stories are inspired by mother nature. And it is only in her arms that you would find experiences worth telling. Do not become a film maker for fame, but only to share an experience that the world is waiting to hear.

Ranjani Sivakumar Siddareddy, Classical Vocalist, Actor

FEATURE |

Ranjani is a trained Carnatic vocalist well acclaimed for her soulful voice. Apart from taking vocal lessons, she has also won the hearts of the Telugu audience with her song ‘Aanandamaye’ from the movie ‘Pelli Choopulu’. Do not fail to spot her acting in ‘EeNagaranikiEmaindi? And PadiPadi Leche Manasu’ For how long have you been teaching classical music? Initially I started teaching kids in Bhavans Rajaji Vidyashram with whatever little I knew back then. During my studies in Vellore Institute of Technology, I shared my knowledge with my peers in the hostel. I proceeded to work in TCS and taught at Devnath School for Blind during my lunch hours. Music had become my main profession only when I moved to the UK where I taught at Sangeetha school at Croydon, while teaching independently alongside my friend Akshay Vaidyanathan. We started ‘Malarum,’ where we reach out to kids who do not have any access to arts due to their financial situation. We also teach at Ammam Mayan in Chetpet, Chennai. A student is the best teacher. I am very glad to be a part of Amar Chitra Katha Live.

Can you talk more about your tour across Chennai during the past month? What was the essence of storytelling through music? Deeptha and Vikram Vivekanand are friends from school - together we are #Triobroma. We collaborated to tell stories collected by AK Ramanujam and gave it a modern twist .We set it in the Madras of nineties and had a lot of fun ( hard work) writing songs and the act itself. It all happened organically and each of us brought in so many skills to make the act blossom. Thenga Maanga Pattaani Sundal, our storytelling gig had a lovely response, thanks to the Chennaimakkal. Where do you see classical music in the following years? Do you think that there is a need to strengthen the awareness on the same? I am a reasonable human being - I see graphs of growth over a period and when I look back to the scenario when I was in college to how it is now, I feel like this is a great time and place to be doing the arts. Funding is always an issue but there is a lot of hope and goodness. Bonhomie is a cherry on top. Where can our readers enroll for classes with you?? Amar Chitra Katha Alive Centre and online lessons. How does Yasaswy run around the walls and forts of the city and still not get exhausted? Maybe practice indeed makes a man perfect? Can you let our readers know what parkour exactly is? Parkour is a simple art of adapting one’s own mind, body and soul to the environment in the most efficient way possible. The goal being reaching from point A to B in the fastest way without hurting oneself. Why this profession? When did you start parkour? This is not something I choose but happened so spontaneously. I have always had some kind of a flow of currency through teaching or through several workshops. It always helps as a tool to my well-being. I started parkour when I just turned 17, tuning into a YouTube video well known back in the days by David belle a chase sequence in District B13. It was in the year 2009.

What is the one thing that is needed to take up parkour and be successful in it? Belief in oneself is the only thing that parkour demands; to have firm belief in oneself. I chose a dark pink for contrast.

PADMA SOMIREDDY Interior Designer | Divine Designs @padma_somireddy

I am an ardent lover of six yards. Nevertheless, the aura and the comfort that the handloom sarees offer are incomparable. I love to wear handlooms because they are Eco friendly and naturally made, it displays the vastness of the Indian Culture, and the production of handloom sarees are important for economic development in rural India specially to support the handful of weavers that are struggling to maintain their art alive. The beauty of Indian textile industry is that each prominence has its own speciality weave, which cannot be replicated elsewhere. Every handcrafted piece is different from the other, and it is worth adding every single piece to your collection. One such weave is the iconic Gadwal saree which is one of my favourite weave of the south Indian handlooms. It gets name from Gadwal District of Telangana state. These sarees are known for the light weight fabrics that they can be worn to almost any occasion. Black and white checks with Red and gold border is my favourite Gadwal saree. This saree is the best example of “serving old wine in a new bottle”. The traditional checks pattern is given the modern twist. Unlike other fashion trends, a saree never goes out of style or fashion. A saree ages like a fine wine and the years, if anything, add beauty and dash of class to its beauty.

Being born and brought up in coastal Andhra, I am always inclined towards sarees as the best dressing option and I admired my mom wearing the best handloom saris available around. We have one of the finest collections of Venkatagiri, Uppada, Mangalagiri, Pochampally, Kanchipattu, and Kasavu from Kerala, Chettinadu and many more. I feel the finest weavers are from south India and an inspiration to many others. We all must encourage our South Indian handlooms by wearing them and supporting weaves and weavers. This’s my most fav sari as it’s gifted by my sister from a village called Peteru where weavers are still not supported much and am trying to do a little by promoting.

Kanchipuram Sarees

Kanchipuram sarees also known as KanchiPattu sarees, is famous all over India. These sarees are from Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.

B. SUSHMA REDDY

Director Sales & Marketing | Sri Aditya Homes @sush.red “Kudos to the half-a-dozen yards of handwoven love” My favourite South Indian saree is Kanchivaram silk. To me it is an amazing amalgamation of creativity, femininity & ethnicity interwoven into an endearing garment with a rich and royal look.To start off with the fact as why I love it so much, I see a connection since it is woven from pure mulberry silk which comes from South India, it reminds me of my roots. I also admire the precision, neatness, the vibrant hues & bright contrast that goes into the making of this handwoven wonder. I vividly remember visiting Kanchipuram while shopping for my wedding trousseau. The weavers take great pride in displaying various kinds of varieties woven by them. The set-up is so venerating that the moment you step in, there is a sense of integrity and one can clearly see how they revere their work. I was amazed to see how truly the weavers managed to capture every nuance of a woman’s interest in the art of adorning. The experience got me reminded of the beautiful poem “Indian Weavers” by Sarojini Naidu from my school time. A poem that conveys the journey from cradle to grave through the use of colours and the stages of a day, highlighting the work of the weaver during different phases of one’s life. I still have my mother’s Kanchivaram sarees from her wedding time which is why I believe that it is ‘one of a kind gift to posterity’. It symbolizes the celebration of south Indian festivals & functions. Whenever I bring these sarees out of my closet they bring back my childhood memories. Even after the introduction of many other light weight sarees it still remains to be indomitable given how coveted a KanchiPattu saree is in today’s world. The name Kanchivaram is popular to the point that there is a Tamil movie made on its name & the movie revolves around the lives of the silk weavers in Kanchivaram. I have to admit that I’ve always been saree clad, while shopping for apparels I’m subconsciously drawn to a saree. I have an eclectic collection of sarees, so much so that I find them comforting and I adore wearing them to work. Saree is one such attire that makes a woman look graceful at any age. I hope that the generations to come will learn to appreciate as well as encourage the weavers for their unswerving loyalty to their profession and agree that ‘Saree is Swag’.

TEEGALA TULASI REDDY House wife @teegalatulasireddy

South India handlooms are always like sentiment for all important events like Marriages, Pooja’s etc. KanchiPattu sarees are my all-time favourite because we look royal and traditional. Kanchipuram sarees are very unique and are worn for special occasions by women in South states.

Sarees have been an intricate and essential part in a woman’s life. The grace that sarees bring can hardly be comprehended in comparison to any other western couture. As for me, I’ve been inclined towards light and delicate layers of fabric like chiffon that looks chic yet poise and so much easier to flaunt. - By Srija Reddy

Every now and then, your wardrobe calls for a massive revamp, and Monsoon season is the perfect way to kick start with new trends. In most parts of India, Monsoon typically lasts from June to September. Rains are here and ruining our clothes and shoes is the last thing we want. The biggest dilemma is what to wear in this season. Let’s put your wardrobe together by deciding what to wear and what to avoid during this season. Here let’s get some looks and tips from our stylists. TULIP - JULY, 2019 59

| SPECIAL

SANDY ARTIST Instagram : @sandysartistry Monsoons are fun to do with bright colours. Due heavy downpour, people tend lose interest in dressing and going out of their houses. But I say this is the perfect season to organize a cheerful wardrobe, wear bold colours and have a fashion fiesta. Loose clothing and wet boots are a part of the monsoon, so the bright colours are always a fun and fashion statement. One can play around with colourful raincoats, like pinks, blues and of course Neons that are trending this season. Brown and black make normal attire, whilst a pink coat with a belt will look attractive. Any clothing ranging from tops, skirts, and dresses will go with the season, while coloured Outfits would best sustain the monsoon sprit. Colours for the Rain: Designers say that bright shades of indigo, green and blue hold good for monsoon. Various hues of sea to dark shades of green will be the choice of the season. Designer’s favourite palette of purple, lemon yellow and white are also the best picks of monsoon. Not just vibrant colours, but even light hues of fuschia pink and soft pastels of pink, orange and peach help to lighten the mood. Wrinkle free clothing in dark shades of black and brown make an ideal formal wear. Beige lined with multi-colours and black seem perfect during the rain. Fabrics for the Rain: I love cotton and it is always good for any season and a blended fabric of polynylon is also good for this season. Right choice of fabric is more important, some fabric like crepe and chiffon tend lose their shine and get spoilt once they get wet. So please avoiding choosing those fabrics. Beach wear designed with a proper fit will flatter the shape and also protect the wearer from wet conditions. Cool casuals for the season would be a jeans fitted with a cotton shirt. Silk and rayon will also make a popular choice during this season adding depth to the hues with variances in the colour palette which is otherwise not seen. Tank tops with palazzo pants make a good fusion pair. Elegant zardosi work on satin fabrics make the mark on ethnic collection. Denims with trendy t shirts or white Shirts are my all-time favourite even during the heavy downpour make a perfect combination Accessories: The right combination of colourful accessories makes the monsoon attire all the more appealing. Aqua coloured are the perfect match for monsoon clothing especially one wearing white. Multi-coloured and semi-transparent jelly sandals will add a dash to the play. Girlish jewellery like single pendant and acrylic accessories give a sporty look for the rainy season. Beautiful 60 JULY, 2019 TULIP

bracelets, earrings, and neck pieces made of plastic, rubber, and acrylic make a trendy fad. Fashion designers continue to improve the art of fashion with beautiful patterns and give a sunny look on a rainy day. Makeup tips for monsoon: Monsoon can create havoc on the skin and hair. But what’s going to suffer is the most is the makeup. Dealing with it is a risk taking issue especially with layers of making and stepping out is not a wise idea. So I believe in minimalistic. I follow less-is-more formula when it comes to makeup this season. First and waterproof formula is your best friend this season. Anything to do with water proof products is a great choice. Waterproof Mascara, Kajal or liner, play it safe. Cream blushes will give the skin a flawless finish and glide on it like velvet, giving it a nice natural glow. Use pinks and peaches and blend well to give it a natural soft look Matte foundations or powder based formulas not only give a matte finish but also helps the makeup stay longer. We definitely don’t want the makeup to melt in this season, so it’s also safe to use matte finish foundations that has a lasting effect on the skin. Avoid glossy lipsticks.

SOWMYA BANDARU Instagram : @somystyles A change in season calls for a change in wardrobe. Rains bring a blue mood and makes you to curl up in bed. But, you cannot let this dampen your style. Neon trend is on a rage, you can wear neon and not look like a highlighter by pairing it with all-black outfit, and a pop of neon. Wearing shorts is the best way to combat monsoon season. Pull up a skirt to your chest level to avoid muddy hems and transform it into a cute little tube dress. I paired this with a floral print shirt. You can either wear a trench coat as an outer layer or a collared shirt inside to keep you warm enough; try to avoid too many layers otherwise humidity will get you. Also, if you’re someone who like to wear leather boots then use water resistant spray to Keep the water out and protect your shoes.

Tips: Beat the neutral colours and opt for bright colours to keep the gloominess at bay. Wear waterproof kajal. I personally use plum goodness kajal. Stay away from prints that bleed colour. Tie up your hair into a bun, or space buns, or into a French braid to avoid frizzy hair. Opt for gel- based creams to keep your skin light and hydrated. A bra with synthetic material is good to help you quickly dry. And if it’s just light rain, and you don’t wish to carry a raincoat then a trench coat is optimum.

NIKITHA PANJALA Instagram : @nikithapanjala08 This season Jumpsuits are the perfect outfits for a formal look or a brunch. For a formal/ semi-formal look, I’d prefer a solid Jumpsuit, if required you may pair it with a blazer if you are attending a meeting, else it will be a perfect outfit for a dinner as well. All you have to do is style accordingly and you are sorted. You can also wear shorts, skirts and dresses that are the most convenient to carry in monsoon. Moreover, you can also team up quirky accessories with your short dresses. It adds more life to your style statement and looks more practical. Make a statement with your umbrella: If you look at the current trends, umbrellas are taking the fashion world by storm. A fun, bright-coloured umbrella can make your outfit look vibrant and playful.

Tips: Dull atmosphere: Colour of your clothes will definitely has an impact on your mood. Add some bright colour to your outfit to get better in the cloudy atmosphere. You may get drenched at any point of time, you need to wear clothes of the fabrics which would dry quickly. Monsoon would always feel good with floral prints however, try different prints. I’d love stripes, polka dots this season. Wear Anti-bacterial socks if you’re option Sneakers, boots, etc. Try to avoid light colours for monsoon. Say a big NO to jeans, as it would take long time to get dried. Instead opt for Palazzos, Culottes and pair them with Kurtis, Tops which would go for a semi-formal/formal look. For casuals, opt for dresses with asymmetrical patterns, midi dresses etc. Also, choose accessories like handbags, watches, etc., which would resist even if you get drenched. In the rainy season, skin care is very essential. It’s beneficial to stay hydrated and saturate your skin simultaneously. When it comes to make up, light and natural looks are ideal to prevent your skin from getting sticky. If you are travelling, choose a spacious bag that is big enough to hold the essentials as well as the umbrella. Tote bags come really handy in the monsoon. 62 JULY, 2019 TULIP

APEKSHA SINGH Instagram : @apekshathelabel Wearing a bright mustard dress with a corset belt and thigh high boots. Rains always make your footwear the worst. So, opt for the footwear which doesn’t get spoiled during this season. Colour is the most important element while dressing in any season. Wearing a cotton wrap dress with a cute Vietnamese rattan bag, which is by far the most comfortable dress I have owned, it would be perfect for brunch, lunch or even shopping. While rains are here, we feel a bit uncomfortable while going out. We feel so lazy. So, I suggest you to wear comfortable clothing.

Tips: Monsoon is all about wearing breathable and light weight clothes, as these dry out quickly. Jeans and thick materials should be avoided. I love wearing extremely comfortable foot wear as commuting could be a challenge in monsoon rains but I do make sure that these also go with my outfit. In accessories I would add a bright yet light scarf, a fancy belt or a colourful umbrella. As I wouldn’t want my hair to get wet and messy, I usually go short every monsoon or tie up my hair in a ponytail or a messy bun. In makeup I would like to advice to go for waterproof mascara, eyeliner and a long stay lipstick, as the weather might go from wet to humid.

Luxury, a word so commonly used these days is different to each, what may be your luxury can easily be ordinary for others. When it comes to travel, the sector is so vast, that everyone can experience their share of luxury, be it to undertake a new experience and immerse oneself in a new destination whilst indulging in the very best levels of personal and attentive service, lavish accommodation, exquisite and unrivalled levels of gastronomy and informative guides. Well for starters, a travel without stress, pressure of time or daily routine, is definitely a luxury. True luxury is a great travel experience, enjoyed in relative comfort and people’s perceptions of what makes travel luxurious seems to vary wildly. We have our readers share their views on what luxury travel means to them and their favourite luxury destination for travel so far.

“I love to travel, but a Luxury travel for me is about staying at a hotel which has some history or has something unique about it. Besides I love spending on food and local shopping, so I guess luxury holiday for me is about an experience and making memories. I have travelled to a bunch of countries but London is one of my favourite cities in the world, though people say the weather is gloomy but summers in London are just beautiful. I travel there once every year and visit my younger sister, friends and extended family. My sister and I always try to do something different each time, so no trip to London has ever been the same. We love to indulge in good food so the restaurants at Mayfair and the high tea at the Ritz hotel would be my favourite luxury experience till date.”

“Like every other person, I love traveling too. I call myself a luxury traveler. But, my meaning of luxury is poles apart than wanting to spend my time or stay in an expensive hotel. My sense of luxury means purposeful yet the quality of the experience. I wouldn’t want to go by a business class or first class nor do I choose to have dinner at a fancy place with champagne. Comfortable travel and experience is luxury for me. I would like to believe in best of both worlds that we should live in the moment and also not forget to click lots of pictures. That reminds me of Hyderabad Blogger Satpreet Kaur whom I totally adore. Ever since I met her and went through her feed on Instagram. All I want to do is to go on a holiday even the days I don’t deserve one. She has a great eye to capture beauty of nature, food and lot more which inspires people like me to take a break from regular life and travel. The place I have always wanted to go was Salarde Uyuni, in southwest Bolivia, it is the world’s largest salt flat. It’s the legacy of a prehistoric lake that went dry, leaving behind a desert like, nearly 11,000-sq.-km. landscape of bright-white salt, rock formations and cacti-studded islands. Its otherworldly expanse can be observed from central Incahuasi Island. Though wildlife is rare in this unique ecosystem, it harbors many pink flamingos.”

Niharika Gollapalli, Founder Eat Confetti

“I feel luxury is a much overused term. Luxury travel is a privilege truly experienced by few. For me it means have the right balance of local insight, independence and flexibility. I do enjoy exclusive access and experiences apart from regular recommended sights, cultural experiences and personal leisure time. No doubt one would also want to enjoy the finest of cuisines, be it within the setting of that special accommodation or a well-known eatery nearby. I believe luxury travel is about having time to enjoy the landscape; indulge in local culture, to stretch out, observe and literally lose yourself in the place you’re visiting.”

“I feel today luxury travel is not about how many Michelin star restaurant you are ticking off’, but it is about access to the people, places and experiences that represent all that is authentic about a destination. There’s no denying that comfort factors still apply and high standards of accommodation and dining will always feature on the luxury traveller’s wish list. But me and my wife personally seek more depth of understanding of the place and soak into local culture than ever before. People don’t just want to see – they want to participate and that’s how they take memories of lifetime home”

Ronak Bokadia, Entrepreneur

“Luxury has a different meaning for each of us. For me it’s travel without stress, pressure of time or daily routine. Your every expectation is met and exceeded. It’s no longer about just five star hotels. It is an experience created for our personal preferences and gives value for our money. My favourite luxury destination in India is The Serai, Chikmanglur, i love the place. It’s easily accessible, has authentic culture and the standards of accommodations is fantastic. They offer fantastic level of personal and authentic service. It’s beautifully set amidst lush green plantations with miles of open land and not too far away from the city. It also has coffee plantation with plenty of hidden secrets. Exploring the place was a wonderful luxury experiential travel for me. Try it and you will agree with me!”

“The best gift a person can give to himself is when he travels with utmost luxury. For me, a luxury travel experience is possible only when you have everything prebooked and pre planned before you reach the destination. After travelling to Great Britian, Australia, New Zealand and Eastern countries, my favourite luxury holiday destination is Switzerland. Apart from the swiss mountains and picturesque old towns, the trips highlight was the helicopter flight around the majestic Matterhorn, the rack railclimb onto Jungfraujoch, a panoramic journey in the Glacier Express across the Swiss mountains and visits to renowned Swiss watch manufacturers and chocolate factories.”

Harshveer Agarwal, Businessman.

“According to me, luxury travel is not about five-star hotels and business class flights but about experiencing the authenticity, locality, and culture of a place. On my death bed, I’m not going to remember materialistic things but I’ll remember the local people I met in different parts of the world and how they impacted my life. I have been to many offbeat unconventional countries and Tokyo tops the list for being the most whacky and luxurious country. The communication was difficult because of a language barrier but it taught me how to communicate without knowing the language and just being kind to each other. Tokyo was a lesson, a perspective, and a life changer.”

Controversial YouTube star Jake Paul is engaged?

Former Disney actor and controversial youtuber Jake Paul popped the question to his girlfriend, Tana Mongeau, on her 21st birthday, and she said yes! The couple also known as Jana was always popular among Jake and his brother Logan’s teenage fanbase, and constantly made headlines for problematic behaviour. Tana had previously been linked to Brad Sousa and Bella Thorne, while Jake was in a prior relationship with fellow Team 10 worker-bee Erika Costell. Along with the massive rock, Paul also gifted his now fiancée the car of her dreams. The couple immediately took to Instagram to share the news and of course to flex the cash.

Tollywood star Ram Pothineni fined for smoking

Popular Tollywood actor Ram Pothineni was found publicly smoking near Charminar, at a place clearly marked as a non-smoking area. The actor, who was said to be shooting for his upcoming film, iSmart Shankar was duly fined by the authorities for this action. However, Ram took to twitter explaining his side of the story and assuring fans that he had actually smoked for a shot that would be included in the movie’s title song and not during a break as reported by several news media. However, since it was unlawful, he had decided to pay the fine anyways. He went on to address gossip mongers, asking them not to waste his time and the public’s time and talk about more useful things instead. iSmart Shankar is slated to release on 18th July in theatres of the two Telugu states.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

KABIR SINGH Tollywood’s very own Arjun Reddy now has a Hindi counterpart in Kabir Singh. For those select few who don’t know the story, Kabir Singh tells the story of an ill-tempered MBBS student who gets into a path of self-destruction due to his unhealthy obsession with his girlfriend, with an incredible performance by Shahid Kapoor. As a film, it does complete justice to the original in every aspect, be it production, plot, acting, and even the misogyny.

MEN IN BLACK – INTERNATIONAL Tessa Thomson and Chris Hemsworth’s take on the classic 1997 film, while maintaining the feel of the original, fails with the script. While the performances were top-notch, with excellent visuals and graphics, and some mention-worthy funny moments, the writing falls flat. The film seems to lazily traverse between several plot-lines before giving us a totally obvious twist, however Thomson and Hemsworth’s dynamic is probably enough to make us forget about all the skylarking, reminding us a little of the classic chemistry between Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent J and Agent K.

AGENT SAI SRINIVASA ATHREYA Athreya played by the impeccable Naveen Polishetty is a small-time detective looking to hit it big in his career. In his search for a big case, Athreya comes across a dead body near an abandoned railway track, and chaos ensues. Naveen Polishetty’s incredible comic timing and solid performance is definitely the highlight of this film, the lead actress Shruthi Sharma does her part as well, with a promising performance. The production value of the film deserves a star of its own. Overall, the film is definitely worth the hype.

PICK AReading CARD June 2019 Clear your mind, take a few Deep breaths and concentrate on the 3 cards in front of you with the below question in mind: “WHO IS MY SOULMATE AND HOW WILL WE MEET?”

Now choose one card and look below for the answer to your question:

CARD 1

CARD 2

If you chose Card 1:

Your soulmate is a person who has excellent clarity and foresight. They are good at planning and looking at the big picture.Well established in their careers but waiting for more future growth. Emotionally they seem a bit tired. They are at a point where they have put in a lot emotionally in every area including personal life as well as career and have not got the returns they expected and this is making them feel dull. You will meet each other while traveling possibly by sea. A Cruise, ferry ride or boating trip is where you will meet each other. They might not want to acknowledge the intense feelings they have when they meet you because they are not used to such emotions. However, you being the emotionally intelligent, can make them realize the sacredness of your connection. They are waiting for you to rescue them from a dull and dreary life so be their hero!

If you chose Card 2:

Your soulmate is a very cautious person who does not trust people so easily due to the setbacks they have had in their lives in the past. They are extremely vulnerable and prone to over analyzing, overthinking and being negative a lot of the time. You will meet at the point where this person has walked away from their current relationship and is in a very agonized state. Therefore, either they would have just ended a long term relationship or a marriage at the time when you both meet. You will probably notice a look of sadness in their face when you first meet. You will meet them near a hilly area with a lake or water body next to it and it would be late evening and the moon will be clearly seen. They will have a tendency to be overly guarded and might not communicate with you or have a tendency to keep breaking off things time and again. Be strong and believe in your connection despite the ups and downs of it. Even if you both do not ultimately unite in this lifetime, this relationship will have made you look at the intensity of what true love is all about!

CARD 3

If you chose Card 3:

Your soulmate is a deep and philosophical thinker who tends to be a loner. They are people who do not socialize much and are quite focused on what has happened rather than what is to come. They are quiet, calm and wise in nature and you will never hear them utter words they do not mean. It is possible they are significantly older to you as well. In their personal life they have gone through a very traumatic time with either a death in the family or relationship and have been unable to come out of that trauma. You both are not just soulmates but a more intense version called “Twin flames”. Your meeting will be in a place which has a very high vibration level such as a religious place, in the air or on top of a very high mountain. The universe is working in the background to get you two together. When you both meet, it would be instant recognition and blending of two souls. The very experience of meeting would be a divine and blissful one and after that life will never be the same again since you would have glimpsed the Divine in each other’s’ eyes. Well met! Stay tuned in future for more “Pick a card” readings!!!You are welcome to write to us about what other questions would you like the cards to answer!
