I have never been much of a reader all through my life until now. When my pal introduced me to Tulip, I instantly fell in love with it. CAMPUS BUZZ When someone brings up the word ‘college’, all one can think about is the millions of memories you have created over those few years. College is that one place where you can be irresponsible, relax, stay out late on a Wednesday night when you have a paper due on Thursday, spend the money you don’t have and chill in the canteen. Amidst the seminars, exams, presentations, lectures, friends, fun, bunks, canteen, there is another very important part of college life- The college festivals. It’s that time of the year when the faculty and the students come together for ‘The event of the year’. College fests are beyond the ‘naach gaana’, the competitions, the fun, events. It’s that time of the year when you feel proud being a part of your college and you put in all the hard work for the event and party harder on the finale day. Chandni Parekh brings you some of the most popular fests of the city colleges.

FESTAS

CBIT-Carpediem

The premier institute in the state is equally famous for its cultural extravaganzas as it is for its academic prowess. Every CBITian-alumni or among the current crop awaits just one fest. Three days of perfection, memories made, heads held up in pride: Carpediem. It’s the only thing on everyone’s mind. Carpediem saw participation from over 10000 people who found something for themselves, because with over 45 events, Carpediem offered something for everyone. The lead-up to the event was bigger than anything ever seen before. When over 120 of the best luxury cars rolled out of the campus it became clear why this was the “God of all Campus Events”. The event in itself was bigger than anything ever witnessed in the state, as far as college events go, with Salim-Sulaiman as the headlining act, performances by Shraddha Pandit and Shadaab Faridi, and music by arguably the best DJ in the state today- DJ Piyush. Carpediem set a benchmark of sorts for college-level events, but that was not all, that was just the last day. Carpediem had a lot more to present. The carnival was one of the main attractions during the event. The other major event was The Verve- an all-out fashion show. Then came, Slash-The Battle of the Bands.Eccentric Pendulum - one of the best bands in the country headlined for Slash. Carpediem VI was the culmination of over a hundred youngsters who underwent months of pressure to pull off their dream- because Carpediem was not just a fest, it was their soul, laid out bare.

St.Francis Colltege for Women- Arthashastra

Arthashastra is one of the most popular inter collegiate youth festivals in the twin cities. It was held for the first time in 2002 and since then it has exponentially grown each year, breaking its own records. Visualized as an opportunity for college students to compete, interact and share ideas, this event is expected to see the participation of more than 150 colleges in the twin cities. The festival’s goal is to bring out the hidden talents in the students and provide a platform to them to display the same. Arthashastra is a daylong fest and includes a lot of educative and fun filled events along with cultural events like music and dance competitions, games etc. Last year the theme of the fest was ‘Dreamagination’ where they spoke about the not so common careers i.e. the road less taken. The students put in a lot of effort and pulled off a great show. The theme, the events, the flash mob were the highlights of the fest. 18 JANUARY, 2014

Bhavan’s Vivekananda Degree College – Bhavanotsav

Bhavan’s celebrated 20 years of completion as ‘Bhavanotsav” this year. The college wore a festive look with talented youngsters competing in various events at Bhavanotsav ; their annual inter –collegiate techno-cultural carnival. It was fitting platform where the students exhibited their latent talents to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The fest also saw a display of stalls where a variety of interesting items were displayed. The various competitions held were- debate, creative writing, battle of bands, DNA puzzle, shot gun, debugging, mind blenders, treasure hunt, elocutions and a quiz competition. The much awaited part of the fest was the DJ. DJ Piyush visited and performed at the college and made the event exciting and fun filled.

Animation, the new in thing Technology and animation are flip sides of the same coin, so for all the techsavvy youngsters animation can be an apt profession. The course can be taken up at a bachelor’s level and it opens its doors to various job opportunities. From character designing to software development, an animator is equipped to do anything. Now that our country has its very own cartoons, animation colleges and studios are booming.

Villa Marie Degree College –The Villa Festa

Achievement when recognized, pushes people to achieve more. The Villa Festa defines this spirit of achievement through artistic creation. A display of amazing talent salutes the festive month of December. Cultural competitions, dance and drama are an investment in itself to fulfill a woman’s traditional role in society. An odyssey into the world of talent journeys the students through cultural activities and culminates into a kaleidoscope of events, that ushers into the Christmas spirit. This year Villa Festa was named- Illuminate- Celestial Magic. It kick started on 19th with an exhibition ‘Kalakriti.’ The fest saw various events like the fashion show, the sports day , the villa talent hunt , the makeover competition , the dandiya event, the junk art and the grand finale took place at Ramoji Film City, where the students performed on several dances and partied in the evening and even had one night stay at Tara and Sitara Hotel on the 26th of December where they celebrated Christmas together and bid adieu to the old year and brought in the new year with fun and frolic.

The Loyla Academy fest - Synapse, it was held from 15th to 19th of December. A synapse is the bridge between two neurons. Synapse, for the Loyla students is the bridge between peoples’ minds. A glorious fest, which encompasses the most innovative and challenging events, containing a backdrop of commerce, a splash of management and a tinge of socio-political management; to draw out in the most wholesome manner, the bubbling latent potential, encroached deep within the niches of each persons’ mind. Their Synapse, connects not just little, powerful brain cells, and minds it connects people. The events in the fest were anything but trite. Megamind, the Business Quiz, simulates the brain cells. It’s his fervor to be known as a person who stands out in a crowd. I want people to recognize me for what and how I do things. There might be 10 other people doing the same thing, but I make it a point to do it in a way, that makes it noticeable and appreciated. So far it’s been great and I am going to continue on this as my little philosophy. I am a very calm person, I don’t get angry or lose temper, but when I do I am a different person altogether, but that is very rare.

Education: I have done my schooling from Delhi Public School, then opted MPC in intermediate and did my engineering in computer science. I have always been passionate when it comes to computer courses, and have added many in my list of education. Work: Right now I assist my dad in business; we are into car accessories (car sonics) and specialize in car woofers, speakers and much more. For me, it was always about getting into this business, sooner or later, and now when I am a part of it, I am all set to take it to the next level. My knowledge and skills about 20 JANUARY, 2014

My family has always supported me in everything I did, they have never refused me for anything, we have a very open communication with each other and that has just brought us close with every passing day. My day: My day starts early around 7-7.30. I workout for half an hour at home, then get ready and have my breakfast. In my family it’s totally opposite when it comes to eating style. We have a light breakfast and a heavy dinner (laughs). My mom is an amazing cook, she always makes something new, and some of her signature dishes are something we never get bored of. Post breakfast, I go to work with my dad, and most of my day is spent working at office. It’s almost 9-9:30 till I get back home. Occasionally I take a break for an hour or two and catch up with friends. I have lot of friends and we make sure to stay in touch with each other. Now that we

Bond with your brother: I have a younger brother, and I share a proper brother bond with him which of course, I don’t deny, is dominating occasionally. I advise him on a lot of things, which he usually dismisses, but usually comes around accepting it at the end. He takes advantage of the things I own (laughs). HIGH ON

Individual take: Faiz Khan: Right from my childhood, I was a very friendly and humble person. I am an extrovert who likes meeting new people and that’s the reason why I have many friends and even today the number just keeps increasing. As a kid, I took keen interest in history and historic monuments and that is probably because of the family I belong to. As a teen I would visit Falaknuma Palace, observe every nook and corner of it and make notes. I would even give suggestions as to how the splendid palace could look even better. My father was a firm believer in education and always told me that education is the most essential aspect in life, this belief of my father had a great influence on me and I took it to be the motto of my life. That went on and took me to join the board of members of Hyderabad Public School (HPS), the property for which was allotted by my great grandmother Lady Vicar Ul Umra. I am a perfectionist who always pays attention to the smallest details and ensures that everything is perfect.

“Religion is a very private thing to me and should not influence you’re relationship with anyone. Religion should not be the reason for bias in any thoughts of your mind and one’s outlook towards life should be neutral.” Nida Khan: I belong to a family which is a blend of various cultures and that influence can be seen in me today. I believe that life is a gift and should be lived to the fullest. I got married at a very young age, 18, and since then my life has always been about my husband and kids whom I love dearly. I love playing badminton and going for a swim in my leisure time as it gives me great satisfaction. On marriage: Faiz Khan: I met my wife 22 years ago and we got married at a very early age. Not in a million years could I have asked for a better wife, as Nida is just perfect for me. She always took care of me through thick and thin and brought up our kids in a way that today they are very well mannered and disciplined

We have similar likes and dislikes as well, which make us very compatible and ensures that we do everything with each other by our side. The best thing about Nida is that she gels along with my friends well and doesn’t feel uncomfortable around them. Nida Khan: My husband is a perfectionist and wants everything in his life in a certain organised manner which makes the entire family very close knit and well bonded. He has always been a very social person, which I was not initially, but today I love meeting new people and socialising after he introduced it to me. He is extremely punctual and he helped me in getting rid of my habit of being laid back. The best quality in him is, he is versatile and makes space for as many things as possible. Children: We have been blessed with two amazing sons- Faraaz, a medical student studying in Shadan Institute of Medical Sciences and Kamil, a grade 9 student of Hyderabad Public School. Both the kids are extremely humble, outgoing and take life the way it comes. But they do not downside their culture and stick to their roots. They have always been there for each other and are partners in crime. Faraaz: My mother is the person I look up to in any given situation of life. She is the one whom I share all my secrets with. A Healthy Detox

Always following the instincts that never let her down is what made Sindurra borra reach where she is today. Belonging to a staple Background like Comp Science, drove her in search of newer passions. After some Good Graduation years abroad, and witnessing several interesting innovations happening right around her, she moved back to India for good, and when she did, she got some goodness with her, something that intrigued & transformed her during her my stay abroad. VICTIM Women Safety has become a challenge now-a-days, especially in our country where the pizza delivery happens faster than the police reaching the crime destination. The condition of women in India has always been a matter of grave concern. Since the past several centuries, women of India were never given equal status and opportunities as compared to that of their male counterparts. The patriarchal nature of Indian society, which even though gives respect to women as they are our mothers and sisters, has greatly hampered both the independence as well as the safety of women. One of the main reasons of violence against women is the mentality which deems women inferior of men and merely limits their importance to the maintenance of the household, the upbringing of children and pleasing their husbands and serving other members of the family. Satpreet Kaur gives you a few knowledgeable acts and rights that give you an insight about the rules, regulations and most importantly the safety right of women under the Indian Law. SPECIAL The Sexual Harassment of Woman at workplace (Provision, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013 An Act to provide protection against sexual harassment of women at a work-place and for prevention and redressal of complaints of sexual harassment and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. Sexual harassment results in violation of the fundamental rights of a woman to equality under the articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution of India and her right to life and live with dignity under the article 21 of the Constitution. The Protection of Woman from Domestic Violence Act 2005 An act to provide for more effective protection of the rights of the women guaranteed under the Constitution who are victims of Violence of any kind occurring within the family and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. Rights of a Woman employee If you are employed in an organization then know that you are entitled to some rights. 1) Right to equal remuneration - According to Equal Remuneration Act 1976, equal pay for equal work is the concept of labour rights that individuals doing the same work should receive the same remuneration. The Act is being implemented by the Central Government in relation to any employment carried on by or under the authority of the Central Government or a railway administration, or in relation to a banking company, a mine, oil field or major port or any corporation established by or under a Central Act. In a male dominated society Women have been victimized and harassed always... But today women are no longer afraid to speak up or fight against it, Like corporations have rules against sexual harassment in offices our government needs to do the same, India needs clear transparent rules for the society to know and fear so they do not carry out such heinous crimes. Deepika, Ginger Lily, Owner

2) Anti- Discrimination - The State is not to discriminate against any citizen on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth or any of them under Article 15 (i). An Act to provide for the payment of equal remuneration to men and women workers and for the prevention of discrimination, on the ground of sex, against women in the matter of employment and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

India being a highly patriarch society, I believe that the roots of the harassment against the women are in the upbringing of the male child. Starting from small things like giving a majority portion of food to the boy, to choosing male child’s education over female child’s education, at every step in the upbringing of the children in our country, we see a male domination pattern systematically being fed to the male child. Domestic violence should be seriously discussed and men resorting to the abuse or harassment of women should be publicly shamed, by removing them from government services, or imprisonment. However, serious cases of abuse, which are criminal in nature, should be immediately addressed by punishing the man with immediate effect. Major loop hole in the Indian system is that the cases filed never see the day light. Each case takes years to be heard and punishment if any will come 10 or 15 years after the incident. In such cases involving the dignity and livelihood of women, justice delayed is definitely denied. This lax attitude of our system has failed to instill any fear in these men. Cases relating to the women should be tried with separate fast track courts and justice should be served as soon as possible. Modern age men and women should work towards an equal upbringing of male and female children. Government should seriously support the poor families in the upbringing of the girl child, by giving subsidized education to them. Kavita Rao Telangana Jagruti Samiti

3) Maternity Benefit - The Indian government has approved the Maternity Benefits Act in 1961. According to this act, a woman who is employed with any company is entitled to six weeks of paid leave. Her employer must not give her any work for six weeks, beginning from the day of delivery. In addition, after resuming work, she should not be assigned any difficult tasks or be given any work that involves standing for long hours. 4) Provision for Separate Washrooms - There should be a provision for separate Washroom for Women and Men. It exists under the following Rule 53 of the Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970.

Crime rate has seen a drastic high in the recent past because of the exposure given by the internet and the fourth estate. Due to the increasing gap between parents and their offsprings kids aren’t able to distinguish between good and bad. One reason for the increase in crime rate is because there are no strict consequences. The only punishment for committing crime against women should be death penalty. Constant awareness among cops is a must to avoid such heinous crimes. Also, cops should be empathetic towards victims of crime so that they get over the agony and walk with their head held high. SPECIAL With New Year’s eve on the cards, festivals are back just like the cycle of our life and the excitement to welcome festivities are back too. Starting with the festival of kites filled with screeching voices from our terraces to the Punjabi’s celebrating Lohri. Ishna Rawlani gives you insights of what are the Hyderabadis upto, the significance of the festivals and how do they celebrate these list of festivals all fresh this year. Let us gear up for the occasions to start again and dress well, cherish memories and remember them forever.

festive 14th January Pongal

Bhargav Iyer a photographer by profession shares his theory of Pongal: “Pongal is one of the longest celebrations in Tamil calendar, spread over four days. As a part of age old belief and hope that the ‘thai’ month will usher in good fortunes, people get excited with joy. It is also the harvest festival that is celebrated by Tamilians. It coincides with the festival Makara Sankranthi celebrated throughout India. The second of the four days or the first day of month Thai is the main day of the festival which is known as Pongal or Thai Pongal. When it comes to me, I spend my day with my parents, relatives (either they come or we go to their place), exchange pleasantries and in the evening I meet my friends and colleagues, fly kites and we end the day with a family dinner.”

14th January Sankranti

Kick starting with Makar Sankranti, ‘’It is one of the most auspicious occasions for the Hindus, and is perhaps the only Indian festival whose date always falls on the same day every year. To Hindus, the sun stands for knowledge, spiritual light and wisdom. Makar Sankranti signifies that we should turn away from the darkness of delusion in which we live, and begin to enjoy a new life with bright light within us to shine brighter and brighter. We should gradually begin to grow in purity, wisdom and knowledge even as the Sun does from the Day of Makar Sankranti. We call for a get-together every year on our terrace, like a small party for close friends and family along with some music and a wide spread of lunch. All the guests indulge in the kite-competition and we have lots of fun. The kite flying goes on till late in the evening”, says Arun and Madhu Bhutra. 34 JANUARY, 2014

Paramjeet Singh and Jugnu Kaur, the adorable Punjabi couple gives us a sneak peek into the festival of Lohri. “Lohri is what marks the beginning of newness, it’s celebrated hugely in Punjabi communities, organizing get-together, preparing special meals. With the winter still on, it’s a typical Punjabi festivity with all the delicacies like ‘makke di roti with sarso the saag, pinni, gajar ka halwa, and hot badam milk prepared for a good one hour. It’s especially a grand celebration for those who have new members in their family, a newborn or a newly wedded couple. It’s more of a celebration than a ritual that brings all family members together to have fun and celebrate the happiness together. There is a bonfire lit up, around which all the family members gather, sing traditional songs, popping rice, corn into the fire and conclude with a lot of dancing and yummy food.”

26th January: Republic Day

After a series of religious festivities, comes Republic Day. We have Mr. Sanjay Singh, exnavy officer describing the significance of this day to him and his take on it. “Republic Day honors the date on which the constitution of India came into force–on 26 January 1950. The new constitution, as drafted and approved by the constituent assembly of India, was mandated to take effect on 26 January 1950–and India became republic. While India’s Independence Day celebrates its freedom from British rule, Republic Day celebrates the coming into force of its constitution. The main Republic Day celebration is held in the national capital, New Delhi but Navy gives me a sense of belongingness and keeps the spirit of nationality alive in all areas. I make sure to attend the flag hoisting religiously that happens in our society. I also take great pride in teaching young kids the essence of republic day followed by watching the National Republic Day Parade telecasted on Doordarshan.”

The Lady with Packs!

WELLBEING

Kiran Dembla - the fitness guru, celebrity trainer and above all, a strong woman (literally) has busted all norms and myths about fitness and how important a fitness regime should be for a person; be it a man or a woman. Ishna Rawlani exclusively talks to her to know more about her secret for fitness. What attracted you to choose this profession? Since my childhood, I am very passionate and did everything with great sincerity. Fitness was something that came to me as passion, and to mould it further I underwent a training program to keep myself fit and it all started there. Day by day my interest only grew, I learnt new things. It was in 2008, when I joined gym for fitness reasons and I met Mr. Laxman Reddy who inspired and encouraged me to go ahead in this line. I have trained as part of -The American Fitness personal trainer program and now I am into body building too. How has the journey been so far? It has been a very long journey of fitness. I opened my own gym in 2008 and since then there has been no looking back. We focus on fitness, for

each and every client that came to us and gradually it started gaining lot of popularity. The first celebrity I trained was Upasana Kamineni before she got married and then Tamannah, Kajal Agarwal, Tapsee and the list goes on. If not a fitness trainer what would you rather be? Basically, I am a trained classical singer and dancer, so if not a fitness trainer today, I would be a singer. I do sing really well. (Laughs) What is the healthiest way to lose weight according to you? I do not support dieting at all. Dieting is a very temporary way to lose weight, you will do it for some time and steadily stop, it’s like a short time goal. I believe a healthy person can be healthy only if you take the road to the kitchen and eat really well and more importantly, exercise!. The genre of women is considered to be more of delicate and not the 6 pack perfectly built body like you have. What made you want to have a body like this? Before I got into this amazing fitness obsession, I used to believe in the same verity that ladies should be elegant and full of grace with a delicate body frame. God has made us that way and that’s how it’s supposed to be. But then I wanted to be different and known to try and do that has been done by none. So, one day I just decided to try my hands on having a six pack and achieved it in a time of 6 months. Being really distinct from others has always been my forte, and I think I have been successful in achieving it. A few fitness tips for our readers to kick start the New Year’s. Follow a very healthy diet, avoid oily food, too much of salt, sugar or junk. Eat lots of fruits, veggies, drink lots of water and do not forget to exercise. You could choose anything from - aerobics, yoga, gym or just a mere walk to have your body active and fit.

The Base The base is the foundation of an outfit, when you begin dressing. These pieces are called your hard pieces; they can be a suit, a pair of pants, a dress or a pair of jeans. Typically, these pieces are not novel, they are classic, often neutral in color (but they don’t have to be) and timeless. Your base pieces may vary depending on your profession and personal preferences. The base pieces you purchase should be dependent on your work environment and personal preferences. However, keep in mind, if you learn how to mix-and-match your clothing you don’t too many of them. The other important thing to keep in mind is to mix-and-match is variety, for example nobody needs three black suits, if you have one, you can move on and add other colors. A lack of variety is the greatest reason why most women can’t mix-and-match their wardrobes.

The Accent Now it is time to move onto the accent pieces. Accent pieces are what you will wear with your base pieces and they are usually tops, cardigans and layering pieces that you can wear underneath your suits, jackets and cardigans. While your base pieces are typically heavy in neutrals, your accents can be a mix of color and neutral shades, you need a lot of variety. The beauty of a more neutral base is that any color you can wear with black, you can also wear with any other neutral shade. While many women know this, this simple fact can often be the biggest eye opener for women who learn this. Suddenly, a navy suit gets more wear because it can be worn with a colorful top while burgundy gets a facelift when paired with camel. These are just some examples of the types of tops you can have in your closet. The beauty of a neutral base is that you can purchase any accent color based on personal preference and work environment. You don’t need multiple items in the same color, the reason we chose so many tanks is that it’s helpful to have a few on hand as layering pieces under cardigans and jackets are smart and don’t take up a lot of space.

The Pop The pop part of this method requires a bit of explaining because this is part that most women neglect and the reason most women are bored to tears in their wardrobe and feel like they have nothing to wear. Pop pieces are jewelry, scarves (if you like scarves), belts, shoes, handbags and those small details that go a long way. What you want to think about when buying pop pieces is your accents and the colors in your base pieces. To avoid looking too matchy-matchy, accent colors can also complement your base and accent shades. You don’t have to purchase pop colors in the exact same shades in your capsule, you can also think of tonal colors and universal shades, like green and yellow, for example, that can add some subtle pops to an outfit. Lastly, also purchase pop pieces in gold and silver, just to have on hand in a pinch.

As we welcome 2014, each of us hope and wish this year to be successful, prosperous and happy. Quite monotonous, isn’t it? How about this year being crazy, outstanding and adventurous! It’s time to change our boring routine this new year. Like they say laugh like you’ve never cried, love like you’ve never been hurt and live like there’s no tomorrow! Do something which you always plan to do but couldn’t, work hard to reach the highest peak of success, but still enjoy to the fullest and do some of the most craziest and adventurous things. Ishna Rawlani asks these adventurous Hyderabadis on what are the top 3 things they will do in the year 2014 which they always wished but never did.

Hopefully 2014 would be a great year as I believe things go good if you make them that way. The 3 things I would love to try are I would like to do something sporty like Parasailing Have a continuous 10 days of my life without shopping as I am a big shopaholic and that’s my weakness. Have a reverse journey on an escalator, that is something really crazy for me!

Participate in a flash mob and lastly. Go electronic free for 24 hrs, could be a beneficial technology detox for me.

I would also like to move in to an apartment with my girls and enjoy for the rest of my life. Last but not the least, learn to dance like Shakira as I have a great passion for dance.

My top 3 to do things for this year would be: Say no to junk food and eat more of healthy food! Try getting up early, at least 6-7 am, which is the toughest task for me. Travel as much as possible, because I love exploring new places.

Srishti Bhardwaj, Fashion consultant & Store Manager

Getting back in shape: 2013 as a year has been pretty laid-back for me. I have least focused on my health and this is something I want to correct in 2014 by charting out a strict workout regime and diet plan. Travelling a lot: This is also something I have really ignored in 2013 even though I love travelling. I’ve made a vow to travel some place new every 3 months in 2014. That makes it 4 new place to explore. Good enough. Learning a new language: I planned on doing this in 2013 well. But, I blame it on too much going on in my life to not be able to find time. Barring excuses, I do plan on learning (or attempting to learn) a foreign language by the end of 2014.

I would not like myself to limit to just 3 things, but many. Top 3 of them are. Drift around the city roads in a car which I tink I am already doing this new year’s. Me and my buddies had decided to trespass the area of the commissioner who stays near whisper valley. Something for which we got caught a few years back! This might be quite a risk taking ( laughs) Create fitness revolution among the kids of Hyderabad.

Fantasy Weddings!

Getting married the regular way is so usual and boring. Couples these days want a wedding to remember. They have fantasies related to their wedding day and they are trying various unique ways to make their wedding a memorable day in their lives. Komal Sirwani brings to you certain unique, fantasy weddings that happened around the world to show how weirdest of ideas can turn into practical events with much of a hitch.

Wedding on a “Merry go round”. Jennifer Alvarez and Brice Timmons got hitched on a carousel at a mall in Memphis after seeing a commercial for the carousel. They wanted a “fun and different” wedding and got it. They got married on a merry go round where they exchanged their vows and celebrated the beginning of a new life.

Wedding Scuba Diving Wedding: How about a scuba diving wedding? It can be arranged so that everyone, including the bride, groom and guests are under water. That surely sounds fun and exciting. Getting married under the waters, having not just humans but also water animals attend your wedding. It is an extremely fun thing and will make your wedding something that people will talk about for years. Monica Fraile and Francisco Calvo got married underwater at an aquarium in Spain.

SPACE wedding: Getting married in zero gravity with absolutely no control of everything would be a unique way to start a new journey with your life partner. New Yorkers Noah Fulmar and Erin Finnegan paid $60,000 to get hitched while flipping weightless inside a modified Boeing 727-200 aircraft. Video game designer and space tourist Richard Garriott officiated the zero gravity wedding. 48 JANUARY, 2014

Bungee Wedding This is a unique wedding theme where the couples are bouncing in the air right above the ground. Hey, maybe this means the new spouse will know how to handle the ups and downs of life. It’s called “Marriage in the Sky” and it’s a thing. Sandra Eens and Jeroen Kippers had a wedding like that. The couple said their vows on a platform 150 feet in the air before taking this plunge. On the plus side, the bride doesn’t need to worry about having to walk around in those heels.

The Wed Balloon Imagine taking your wedding vows while stranded on a balloon in mid air. In India,a couple took off in a hot air balloon to celebrate their nuptials. Not only fun, it’s a brilliant way to get away from your in-laws as fast as possible.

Tulip asked a few Hyderabadis, what would their fantasy wedding be like. I consider marriage to be the most important day of my life. I believe in doing something out of the box and setting a trend than follow it. Being a true admirer of nature, I imagine to be proposed on a mountain top. I would definitely prefer to marry at the most beautiful and calm place, away from pollution and a mountain top according to me would be the best idea. I would have a floral wedding theme and would have only my close ones bless me on that day than have a regular banquet hall or garden booked in the city. Harsha khandelwal, HR professional

Mantra Marriage for me is a symbol of togetherness and an occasion to be blessed as it is the most important day of your life. Since I consider the sea and the beach to be the romantic thing, when I imagine where my wedding would happen, the first thing that comes to my mind is a decorated boat. I would love to have the rings exchanged in the middle of the sea with soft music being played in the background. I don’t wish to have too many people but my close ones could enjoy dancing and drinking. Deepika, Teacher

Fashion is all about dressing your body. If you know your body shape - and every woman should, then you will be able to find clothes that fit and flatter. Body shape is all about proportion and fashion is all about dressing those proportions to look their very best. When you think about body types, don’t focus on height and weight, focus on shape. Each of us is unique - and our bodies are, too! Spend some time in front of the mirror and do a fair and honest assessment of your body. Then put these fashion tips to work for you! 50 JANUARY, 2014

As an Apple body type, you have a large bust, narrow hips, and a full midsection. You have a tendency to gain weight in your stomach, back and upper body. Your waist is undefined and the widest part of your frame. You also have a full, shorter neck and full face. Your buttocks are somewhat flat and your legs are slender. Your shapely legs are your best asset.

TULIP

t

FEATURE

If your body type is: Apple

The key to dressing an Apple body type is to de-emphasize your midsection and create a more defined waist. This is achieved by choosing clothing that add curves and fullness to your lower body and tops that taper to a waist. You have amazing legs, so feel free to play with skirt lengths, but don’t go too short otherwise you will further have a top-heavy look. Tops Look for tops that will taper your upper body while creating a more defined waist: • Square, wide V or U necks. • Wrap style tops and jackets. • Tops with vertical details. • Tops that flare at the hip. Bottoms Look for bottoms that will minimize your lower half: • Pants with full or wide legs. • Go for details such as whiskering, embellished pockets & flap pockets. • Full, tiered, flared or bubble skirts. • Cargo or safari pants with pronounced hip and rear pockets. • Mid-rise waists with wide waistbands.

If your body type: Hourglass Lucky you! You have the Hourglass body type that most women strive for. Your bust and hips are well balanced and you have a beautifully defined waist. You have gently rounded shoulders that align nicely with your hips. Your waist is obvious and gracefully curves out to your hips. You most likely have a rounded bottom and beautiful side as well as front profile. From top to bottom, you are a picture of harmony and balance. The key to dressing an Hourglass body type is to proportionally dress the top and bottom of your body while accentuating your waist. Wide belts over shirts and dresses are a great way to show off your waist. You can create an even more curvaceous effect by proportionally adding a bit of volume to your upper and lower body, but always try to maintain balance since it is your best asset. Tops Look for tops that will accentuate your waist and maintain the balanced look of your figure. Look for: • Belted tops. • Form-fitting tops. • Wrap-style tops. • Tailored shirts and jackets. Bottoms You can wear almost any bottoms as long as you pair them with the proper top. • High-waisted pants and pencil skirts. • Boot cut & straight leg pants. • Skirts that will show off your great legs. • Skinny jeans and pants paired with a balanced top. • Cargos or flap pocket jeans paired with a balanced top.

Ishita Singh, Fashion designer Pear: A heavy bottom and a petite upper body, Clothing: A fitted bodice with an A-line lower would flatter the body shape. Accentuate your waist line. A little flare around the hem will add volume. Apple: bigger on your top half than your bottom, Clothing: Try to keep it simple, with not too much detailing around the bust. If you want to add details try to do it either above the bust or below the hip to get a slimmer look. You can wear full length dresses. Ruler: Straight up and down, Clothing: This is one kind of a body type where you can do maximum experimentation with flare and a-line as well, though the curves are not very prominent the yoke lengths can be fitted with a lot of layers on the lower. Hourglass: A wellproportioned top and bottom body with a narrow waist, Clothing: in this body type your shoulder line and the hip line are the same so you can experiment with pencil skirts, and a belted look would work well. If your body type: Pear As a Pear Body type (sometimes called triangle), your hips are larger than your bust and you have a nicely defined waist. You have an elegant neck and proportionately slim arms and shoulders. You first gain weight in your bottom and legs followed by your tummy and upper body. Your waist is your best asset so don’t be afraid to show it off. The key to dressing a pear body type is to enhance and add volume (or the illusion of volume) to your upper body while emphasizing your waist and de-emphasizing your lower body to create a balanced, hourglass appearance. Create the most curvaceous effect by mixing and matching our suggested separates. Tops Look for tops that will help balance your lower half while accentuating your defined waist: • Tops with nipped or fitted waists. • Off the shoulder, boat-neck tops, wide V or U necks.. • Embellishments around the bust and shoulders. • Bright colors and bold patterns. Bottoms Look for bottoms that will minimize your lower half: • Pants that fall straight from the widest part of your hip. • Avoid details such as whiskering and embellished pockets. • A-Line skirts. • Lightly gathered skirts that skim your body without adding volume. • Darker colors, clean lines and simple stitching.

If your body type: Straight Anitha Reddy, Fashion Designer Whatever is your body type, dressing appropriate always makes a huge difference. Long flowy gowns suit best for people who are tall and thin, whereas people who are a little on the heavier side should always opt for outfits made from lighter fabrics. Prints such as tie and dye, lehariya, and digital prints in darker backgrounds give a nice look too. People who are short should avoid silhouettes with bold prints which are much busier, big borders should also be avoided, you can rather pick solid colors and go for outfits which involve detailing of the fabric like small pin tucks. In present scenario, my personal opinion would be, go for long floor length kalidars, as they would do justice to any body type if made out off the right fabric. 52 JANUARY, 2014

You have the most common body type. This means that your hips and bust are balanced and your waist is not very defined. You probably have a bottom that is more flat than round. You tend to gain weight in your torso first and then your upper thighs and arms. Your lower legs are always shapely and one of your best assets. The key to dressing a Straight body type is to proportionally dress the top and bottom of your body while enhancing your waist. If you are comfortable doing so, you can wear form fitting clothing (such as a tube-type dress) and create a waist by adding a wide, dark belt. However, to create a more curvaceous effect add volume (or the illusion of volume) proportionally to your upper and lower body by mixing and matching suggested separates. Tops Look for tops that will add curves to your upper half and create a more defined waist: • Tops with belted waists. • Off the shoulder, boat-neck tops, wide V or U necks. • Structured shoulders, princess or flutter sleeves. • Tops that are full, rushed or flowing around the bust. Bottoms Look for bottoms that add curves to your lower half while creating an hourglass effect: • Pants with full or moderately flared legs. • Go for details such as whiskering, embellished pockets & flap pockets. • Full, tiered or bubble skirts. • Cargo or safari pants with pronounced hip and rear pockets. • Mid to low-rise waists with wide waistbands.

These days everyone is visiting different foreign destinations and exotic locations whenever they need a break, but we all have that one place where we go back every year, our hometowns and native places. Each of us have fond memories of visiting our grandparents, uncles , aunts, cousins and relatives, that one place where the entire family comes together every year and spends some quality family time. When you think of native places they are not just small towns or villages but also big cities where we love going every year and having our share of fun. Chandni Parekh brings you native destinations of some of our Hyderabadis.

TRAVEL y native place is Kolkata and though the city has grown vastly it will always have its Victorian charm. Every year we tend to visit Kolkata at least twice or thrice. All my cousins and relatives stay there and I am always excited to pack my bags and head to Kolkata. I love visiting Kolkata because my entire family comes together there and that itself is like a big celebration. Apart from spending time with family there, I also love the food, shopping and the club life the city has to offer. Kolkata is famous for its chaat and I end up eating puchkas and jhalmuris almost every day. It’s just too addictive and mouthwatering. I equally relish and indulge myself in the famous Bengali sweets like Rasgulla, Mishti Doi, Dorbesh and Seeta bhog are some of my favorites. I also love the kachori sabzi and dhoodh cola which is found on the streets of Kolkata. Being a girl, shopping is on my priority list. Kolkata is known for its Indian and traditional wear market. It’s the hub for beautiful ethnic Indian wear, and I love shopping from Ram Mandir, to Park Street to the extremely crowded Bada Bazaar. The evenings are very chilled and we entire bunch of cousins end up hanging out at Golden Park or Blooz. The best time I love visiting Kolkata is during the Durga Pooja Festival, the city is so beautiful and lit up then during those nine days that we end up having the time of our lives.

S

Shalini Jena, St Xavier’s College ince I was five years old my favorite season of the year has always been summer, the reason being that I get to visit my hometown - Odisha. The stress that builds up throughout the year due to various day-to-day activities comes down automatically when I visit my hometown. The place is filled with extremely warm and hospitable people and the cuisine there is to die for. It keeps me away from my social life and takes me into a natural high. Now that the place is developing slowly, it also gives various options – Café Coffee Day, multiplexes, coffee bars- to hang out with friends and family. Also, the place is extremely picturesque and hence is a destination for budding photographers. For all the spiritual people out there it’s a treat for eyes as Odisha is a home to various temples and historic carvings which definitely deserve a visit. So, I advice very Hyderabadi to pay a visit to my hometown and I ensure that they will not regret it.

M

Rohit Bajaj, Entrepreneur y parents come from Delhi and Amritsar so I can say both are my native places. Amritsar is among one of the biggest cities of Punjab and I make it a point to visit the golden temple at least once in a year. I also make it a point to do ‘langar ki seva’ where I help serve food, tea and also wash the utensils later. It gives me a pleasing sense of satisfaction every time I offer help at the Golden Temple. The food is another thing that draws me to Amritsar. I feel Amritsar should be officially known as the food capital of India, nothing and no place can match the taste of the food there. The Butter chicken at Chawla’s is simply so buttery and delicious, the chole kulcha at Giani’s is another mouthwatering dish I love to indulge into the kulchas served here that are like aloo naan and the extra butter they add on the kulcha makes it very hard to resist. Another place I love to visit is the Kesar da dhabba where the dal, firni and malai wali lassi is a must try for everyone. Guru di Hatti is famous for its fruit and ice cream and I have never tasted such tempting handmade ice cream anywhere else. Amritsar is known for its fairs like Kothe da Bela and Basant Panchmi. As kids we were always eager to visit Vallah Sahib and rejoice the extreme rush of the fair and enjoy the Dholwalas and Bhangra troupe performances. The thing I like the most about Amritsar is the warmth of the people i.e. heartfelt and touching.

I have to visit all my relatives and friends every time I am there and that way I get to explore the entire city as everyone stays at different corners of the city. Now that my sister has also got married there I try and spend my maximum time with her. Toto’s garage, Olive, WTF, Carter road CCD are some of the places I tend to meet my friends in Mumbai. I love absolutely everything about the city, the sea, the beaches, the bandstand, Worli sea face, the hustle, the local trains the night life and most of all the fashion there. Every time I visit the city I end up shopping bags of clothes accessories and shoes. I shop at malls from stores like Zara and Forever 21 which haven’t yet opened in Hyderabad but also I do love the street shopping as well, the accessories from Colaba causeway, the shoes from linking and the clothes from hill road are something I always tend to pick up. Another thing I always miss about Mumbai is the street food, I love indulging in the Elco ka chat , Amar ki Pav Bhaji, mithibai ka wada pav and ambica ka dosa, they are absolutely mouth watering. y native place is Sojat a beautiful small town in Rajasthan. It’s a place where the entire family meets every year. Ever since we were little kids we would visit Sojat for our summer vacations. I love visiting Sojat as the entire family comes together and the whole atmosphere becomes like a big festival itself. All the people there are down to earth and we tend to know almost all the people there as it’s a small town. Our ancestral house ‘The Laddha House’ is a land mark of the town and it’s a really big palatial house where we get treated nothing less than royalty. We try visiting Pushkar temple as well as it is just 5 hours from Sojat. I enjoy visiting the market area and shops where I end up buying beautiful Rajasthani mojris and mirror work footwear, the beautiful colorful bangles and the traditional Rajasthani ghaghras. ‘Sojat ki Mehndi is famous all over the world and even Aishwarya Rai got her wedding mehndi specially from Sojat so we make it a point to get beautiful mehndi designs applied just before we leave from there. Two places I never miss and always make it a point to visit are ‘Prahalad ki Jalebi’ and ‘Somnath ki Kulfi’. Every year we await the summers so that the entire family meets together and we have a big celebration there.

I love the Tumblr application on my phone. It has the most amazing pictures, quotes and some beautiful things to inspire from. The pictures are very beautiful plus I even get some ideas for my outfit of the day, hairstyle and much more. Tumblr is that one application that makes me smile and I can even share my pictures with others. People throughout the world come to share their pictures and we see the world through their lens. What kind of hurdles do you face in this profession? Managing manpower is one of the toughest challenges in Hyderabad. To get your restaurant staff to show up to work regularly and perform efficiently is very difficult. Increasing food costs, power cuts, high rentals and increasing competition are all factors of concern to restaurant owners.

How did you conceptualize the idea of Olive Hospitality? I am a hospitality management graduate from Switzerland. I have been in the hospitality industry for the whole of my professional life. Although I was primarily heading sales & marketing department, I was always fascinated by the food & beverage department. When I had the opportunity to become the General Manager of a beach resort in UAE, I got an opportunity to renovate and rebrand one of their failing restaurants. There is an increase in the number of people who are keen on entering into the food and beverage business but are not sure how to go about it. That is when Olive Hospitality was formed. We are restaurant consultants who guide investors who are keen on entering the industry and we also work with operational restaurants to help them become more efficient and profitable. It is named after my three year old daughter Olivia. Tell us something more about your role in guiding different upcoming restaurants & hotels. We have several enquiries every week from various parties about entering the food and beverage industry. For many, it has been a fantasy to own a restaurant and for others it is a short lived aspiration. Only tiny fractions of the people we meet have the financial capacity and the will power to see this through. We understand the investor’s wants, how much they can invest and what kind of returns they are looking for. Based on that, we do market analysis to understand the current trends, create and develop the restaurant /

The Silent

Hotelier

Kalyan Charan, a man with absolutely different business of creative ideas, who has come a long way of inspiring and generating new concept of restaurants, to those who want to build them. He has been a part of this hospitality sector for a quite some time now, but is a young and dynamic person to come across. When in conversation with him you are definitely get to learn something and get a whole new idea of this rapidly emerging sector.

Why not a restaurant or a hotel of your own? Olive Hospitality has put its money where its mouth is and will be opening its own restaurant in Secunderabad in January 2014. Samrudhi, located near Rasoolpura Junction, will be Secunderabad’s only family restaurant serving authentic Telugu cuisine. The idea is to open another branch in 2015 and spread across India and open an overseas branch by 2018. We are also working on several new concepts to open up ourselves in 2014. We have some really cool stuff planned but it will need some time. How has the journey been so far? The journey has been anything but easy. I’ve been through some really challenging times but somehow made it through with the help of my family and friends. The challenges I faced have helped me to become a more matured person on so many different levels. Everything that has happened has been a learning experience and I believe that whatever happens, it’s for the best. I’ve had a fulfilling life so far, full of amazing experiences and people. I’m always waiting to see what tomorrow brings! What are your future plans? I want to focus on bringing to life all the food and beverage concepts we have planned. I want to offer more dining options for the people of Hyderabad and introduce them to new cuisines. Eventually, we will take our operations throughout India. I also want to grow the property services business and acquire a larger market share. There are also plans to diversify into tourism and education in a few years.

MOVIES Movie Reviews

Dhoom 3 Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Tashan which released in 2008 was termed as a Bollywood disaster, but he got a second chance in Dhoom 3 which was made on a humongous budget. Aamir Khan makes his entry by running vertically on a building, Abhishek by breaking through a concrete wall, Katrina with a 10 minutes aerobic session and well, nobody cares about Uday Chopra’s entry. The action sequences were most certainly conceived during a drunken chor-police game that Acharya played with his toys one night. You see Khan driving a bike that turns into a boat that turns into a submarine that turns into a bike. And since this is a Dhoom movie where you get a buffet of bad acting, cheesy romance and dreadful songs it’s not fair to take pot shots at Chopra because he’s the only genuine element in the film – all of his jokes are self-referential. Bachchan Jr doesn’t do much more than grimace a couple of times and walk around extremely determined. Khan is a good dramatic actor and a great comedic actor, but is not a commercial action hero. Someone needed to tell him to lighten up a bit. This is a Dhoom movie after all. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire The Hunger Games was one of the most critically acclaimed films of last year, leaving most of us looking forward to the sequel. Before watching the film I couldn’t help thinking that a sequel was in danger of being formulaic, much like the second ‘Hangover’ movie felt for me. It’s safe to say that ‘Catching Fire’ goes above and beyond its predecessor, taking everything we loved about the first movie and doing more than enough to keep it feeling new and exciting. Following their victory in the 74th annual hunger games, Katniss and Peeta return home, but now everything has changed and a rebellion is brewing in the districts. Not only that, but when the announcement comes that the tributes for the 75th hunger games are to be drawn from previous victors, Katniss and Peeta find themselves experiencing a horrible case of Déjà vu. ‘Catching Fire’ has you on the edge of your seat, grabbing you almost instantaneously when Katniss is haunted by her past and from then on, we are swept into a dystopian battle of fear and hope, the latter of which Katniss now unwillingly stands as a symbol for; her actions hold great consequences for the lives of those around her. All-in-all, ‘Catching Fire’ is one of the best films I’ve seen in a while and definitely is up there as one of the biggest films of the year. Aata Aarambam Veteran actor Ajit’s ‘Aata Aarambam’ got mixed responses from critics and audience. The film’s story revolves around Ashok Kumar (Ajith), a former member of an anti-terrorist squad, who unearths a scam regarding faulty bullet proof jackets that kills his friend Sanjay (Rana Daggubati). Sanjay’s sister Maya (Nayanthara) and hacker Arjun (Arya) help him achieve his goals. The film boasts of an ensemble cast including Taapsee Pannu, Mahesh Manjrekar, Atul Kulkarni, Akshara Gowda, Suman Ranganathan and Krishna. Directed by Vishnu Vardhan of ‘Panja’ fame, ‘Aata Arrambam’ is deemed as a stylish entertainer that will impress Ajith’s fans. On the whole Ajit’s performance struck a chord with the audience and and the film did do well at the box office, despite major clashes.

Just play with the time and utilize best of it in spiritual practices as well as meditation. Yoga believers die for such time to experience enlightenment. Even if you don’t want to do meditation or other allied things, you may use this time for relaxing and restoring energy for the next coming years. Spiritual vibes will be surrounding you this time. Further, it is always difficult to manage your schedule considering yourself in this moribund life. However, this year will give you ample time to feel yourself. This year is going to take you to a roller coaster life. Well, it is not that easy as it seems. It is like that if good news is coming from east then bad is coming from west. It might sound bad to you, but for others it is interesting. This way your mood will remain constant throughout the year. It is like having candies in one hand and toilet brush in the other. People who are engaged with an institution for studies might have to face disagreement either from teachers or classmates, due to which they might feel troubled. But surely, they will do something big, which will lead many people down to their feet till the end of the year. Life is not always that easy as it seems to us and this time will teach you the meaning of this statement. If you are in love, your partner is going to become unpredictable. You never know how their mood is going to be in another minute. You have to keep this in mind to keep your relationship last long.

PISCES

Everybody has secrets in their lives and it is possible that some of your secrets might offend many people, so keep your personal life’s secret hidden and plan your schedule in such a way so that you can play with kids, talk with elders, party with friends and meditate with your soul. Your lover might go far from you, either physically or emotionally. In either case, try to console your relationship to keep the soul of your love alive. Finances might trouble you, as you have a lot to do this year. A schedule will help you manage your finances in a proper way. People dream to have a real money plant that can grow money instead of fruits and leaves, in your case, things seem to be the same way. And, fortunately that money showering tree is going to root in your garden. But, the important part is that it is not going to last forever. This tree might have a short span of life. You can only put efforts to improve his life, but still it won’t be able to give you very high results after few years. That is why use the time and store it for your future. All these things are symbolizing one thing that you are all surrounded with the smoke of positivity. This will keep on making your days colorful throughout the year. You need to understand the fact that all good things come to an end. So, before they end, live them to the best.

FORTUNE just like women. Women reminded me of something, which is called relationship. Gemini, you are going to experience the topmost level of erotica. Emotional loyalty and faith are not predicted but materialistic desires seem to be coming your way. We can do anything and everything. So, live it up and make your surroundings stand by heaven. Positive energies are revolving around you during this time. You will feel angelic butterflies around you. Just tilt your inclination bit more towards spirituality or meditation and you will be on the topmost floor of the success. Romance is going to ignite this time, keep your emotions in control because your loved ones will yell on you if you fall for wrong one. It is understandable that love is blind, but being an emotional fool will do no good to you.

SAGITTARIUS

(November 22 - December 21) Sagittarians are quite understanding and broad minded in nature. They are the ones who use their brains more than heart that is why dark clouds of trouble usually forget their way. However, some problems are too stubborn that they don’t see the native and simply attack like a bull. In such cases, super brainy people also fall down. 2014 is bringing some difficult times for you as well. But, difficulties will always end up with something good and it is always said that all is well if the end is well. Trust yourself and your abilities; you will surely succeed in your motive. On the other hand, your loved ones will demand more time from you and time is the most precious thing for you. Obviously, you would not want to be in trouble anyhow. So, start scheduling from now otherwise you won’t be able to concentrate on your work, as your loved ones won’t let you do it. Don’t push things too much, just concentrate on work, family and friends. It is advisable for you to avoid indulging yourself into new ventures, otherwise things might go worse.
