FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK Looking back to the times over the recent two decades and before, I have been witnessing the optimal use of technology (gadgets, to be a little more specific) – combined with matching intelligence to use them of course, in most of the Hollywood blockbusters; which I had seen over and over. What guided me to astonishment is a much-anticipated fact – an urge to bring about a transformation within the world we live in, through the movies we watch. A transformation among even ordinary people to invent, adapt and inspire to use the latest of technology in a way to make daily living, simpler. If people in other parts of the world could seek a change possibly in their lives through a given field of technology, why can’t we? Quite certainly, there are several productive aspects (Business, Art, Science or Medicine) which, if mastered and implemented well enough by anyone, can bring a revolution to her/his respective society or even to nation. Every country can achieve what it dreams to! Every country has the ability to bring about betterment among its own citizens, for itself and move ahead with more sophistication. It is all about knowing how and in what, we stand a chance! This is a small message intended to evoke readers’ innate abilities, to re-identity themselves and work over fields of interests, with smartness and passion. A passion for revolution! And remember – It’s always people combined as a team with similar thoughts and opinions who bring a change, more than an individual with the same. On the cover this issue, is Kannada & Tollywood actress Sanjana who had carved a niche for herself at a young age of 22 in south Indian film industries. Interior Designer - Rajani Sharma talks to Tulip about her passion for dancing and her love for pets, in A Day From Her Diary and an important message to pregnant woman on how to take a better care of herself and the baby - with simple, yet productive exercises and yogic postures. THREE THINGS I LEARNED FROM THIS ISSUE A special feature on the history of Hyderabad and how the city was centuries ago and how it is now; will leave you fascinated. Though being in love has to be celebrated all year long and forever, Valentines’ Day has its own way and it brings along with it, a unique feel about love. Women are passionate about jewellery, as it represents a symbol of femininity and even social status. Jewellery has always made women feel more beautiful and confident.

Happy Valentines’ Day Regards,

HRITHIK ROSHAN

12 YEARS OF BOLLYWOOD

B O L L Y W O O D

Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan has thanked his fans as he completed 12 years in the Hindi film industry. ‘12 years! Really? Wow, thanks guys for the wishes! Now back to work! - Hrithik wrote on his Twitter page. The 38-year-old actor had a dream debut in 2000 with Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, which was directed by his father Rakesh Roshan, who also introduced another new face, Amisha Patel, with the love story. Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai rocked the box office, but Hrithik’s later releases could not ape the success of his debut movie, however; he kept growing as an actor with each film and earned praises for his performance. After an initial dull period, he struck gold with the science-fiction Koi... Mil Gaya, again directed by his dad. Post that he had hits like Krissh, Dhoom 2, Jodhaa Akbar and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. The actor, who is geared up for the release of Agneepath remake, said - Need to make the next 12 years even better. Love always!

SONAM KAPOOR

WAHEEDA’S ROLE IN GUIDE

Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor has expressed her desire to step into the shoes of yesteryear actress Waheeda Rehman and essay the role she played in 1965 film Guide. The film, starring Dev Anand and Waheeda, was based on R K Narayan’s critically acclaimed novel, The Guide and Sonam, who has worked with the veteran actress in Delhi 6, is keen on a chance to play the character of Rosie Marco. I have worked with her in Delhi 6. She is a fabulous actress. If I had to pick a role from the older films then for me it would be from the film Guide. The character of Rosie was not that of a typical heroine. it had a lot of grey shades. I would love to portray this role, the 26-year-old actress said. Sonam also attended a function where an album of late writer-lyricist Kaifi Azmi, father of veteran actress Shabana Azmi, was launched. I like many songs of Azmi sahib. Today’s songs do not have stability and grace. My generation is impatient and the beauty of that time is lost to us - Sonam said.

AMITABH BACHCHAN ON BALL ROOM DANCING

Amitabh Bachchan says the romance and the effect of ball room dancing seen during his time had vanished now. The 69-year-old actor rues the fact that the decorum and chivalry attached to the particular dance form is nowhere to be seen these days. The romance and the effect of the touch and feel of ball room dancing had vanished. There was certain decorum in it. The getting up and asking the lady for the dance, the position of statured elegance as you stretched your hands to gently allow the lady to rest hers on yours. The firm yet gentle guidance that one conducted by the other hand on her waist, moving and controlling her composure as it were. Those piercing looks as you held her and talked of the weather and everything else under the sun, as you avoided stamping her elegant dress by your out of rhythm feet, her hand gently resting on your shoulder, a picture of support to the woman in your arms. A gesture of care and protection! All gone now! - Bachchan wrote on his blog.

AYESHA SHIV

MAHESH IS COOL AND QUIET Ayesha, well known as Kajal’s friend in Mahesh Babu-Kajal starrer The Businessman is a model born and brought up in Canada. Puri Jagannath usually introduces fresh faces as heroines, however for a change this time he chose to introduce this Canada citizen to the Telugu film industry. She said – Puri Jagannath is a fabulous film-maker. Before casting me in this film, Puri garu trained me in acting. I’ve learnt many things from him. He is a very supportive person. Regarding Mahesh she commented, He is a handsome hero, cool and quiet. The first Telugu film that I watched in Telugu was Pokiri, but I liked The Businessman more than that. I am pretty impressed with Mahesh’s performance. About her role in the film she said, - I hope to receive good recognition for my role as Kajal’s friend. It was a challenge for me. I dubbed by myself for my character. It was a different experience. The best compliment that I received was when my parents and friends praised me for my performance in the film.

WHAT’S GOING ON? IN NAYANTARA’S MIND

While on one hand Prabhu Deva is making all efforts to stop Nayantara from acting since they have planned for their marriage shortly; on the other hand, the directors and producers of Tamil film industry are said to be tempting her with interesting offers after she tasted success through the Telugu film Sri Ramarajyam. According to Chennai sources, directors like Linguswamy, Venkatprabhu and Vijay have approached her with some good performance oriented roles. The sources claim that even though Nayantara decided to stop acting after marriage, chances are that she might change her decision and accept these offers. However, her close associates revealed that even though the Directors have met her and narrated the stories, she has not yet taken any decision. But remember folks another clue is that Dasari Narayana Rao told Nayantara publicly in the 50 days function of Sri Ramarajyam that not to consider this as her last film and that she can continue acting even after her marriage. So let’s wait and see what’s still going on in Nayantara’s mind.

GAUTHAM MENON WANTING TO DO EDT

Gautham said - It was since 10 years that I directed a film in Hindi. Of late, many south Indian films like Pokiri, Ready, Singam, Bodyguard, etc., turned out to be hits even in Bollywood. Unless we are strong in the language along with story and screenplay, we should not make such attempts in other languages. However the film like Ye Maya Chesave is with universal subject. Hence, I chose to remake this film in Hindi. This movie has given me good satisfaction. I would have remade it in Hindi long ago, but I wanted to do it only after I get a good grip on the language and write dialogues on my own. This is only the cause for doing Ek Deewana Tha now and not with the intention of making cash based on the successes of latest south Indian films. I am very confident about this film and leaving the rest to the audience.

JOHNSON WAGNER SONG OPEN – HAWAII

Johnson Wagner picked up his third PGA Tour win at the Song Open in Hawaii, with a final round of 67 enough to claim a twoshot victory. Wagner was three under for the day and 13 over the event, but overnight leader Matt Every missed his chance to push for the title as he shot two over to finish tied for sixth. Four players were level in second on 11 under, with each player in with a chance of victory at some point during the day. Carl Petterson, Sean O’Hair and Harrison Frazar all matched Wagner’s 67 on the day but needed more to press for victory, while Charles Howell III managed only one under, his worst round of competition. Wagner’s day had started with a bogey five and although he picked a shot right back up at the second he added a second bogey on six. He again followed that with a birdie at the next hole and went round the back nine in three under; with a pressure putt from the sleeve of the green on 15th.

GENOA SLAMS S P O R T S

RONALDINHO RUMOURS Genoa president Enrico Preziosi has laughed off suggestions that his clubs are poised to snag forgotten Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho. The former Barcelona wizard is embroiled in a spat with current outfit Flamengo over allegations of unpaid wages and his brother and agent Roberto de Assis has warned that the player could walk out on the club unless the matter is settled soon. His wage woes with the Brazilian giants has prompted speculation in some quarters claiming that Genoa have swooped in with a proposal. Genoa supremo Preziosi sarcastically responded to the reports, - Yes, he’s going to arrive together with [Real Madrid’s] Kaka. However, Preziosi conceded that the club could make a transfer foray for Lazio forward Giuseppe Sculli. He could only come on loan, he revealed. Maybe I’ll talk this evening with [Lazio president] Claudio Lotito. Meanwhile, Preziosi admitted that midfield schemer Alexander Merkel, who is co-owned with AC Milan, could soon be jumping ship to the San Siro. Merkel is a very promising young man and we would like to keep him but he must be convinced [to stay], he remarked.

NICO ROSBERG FAITH IN BRAWN

Nico Rosberg believes Ross Brawn has what it takes to elevate Mercedes GP to the top of the Formula One rankings. Rosberg, who last year committed his future to the team, has yet to win a grand prix with his team despite them having won the world titles under the Brawn GP banner in 2009. Rosberg; though, is adamant that the team has the personnel needed to take them to the front of the grid. Now they just need the cohesion and a winning car. With Bob Bell, Geoff Willis and Aldo Costa we have three new top people on board and I believe very strongly in Ross, he told Auto Moto und Sport. You can feel his ambition. He knows what we need, to be the best team. There are many very competent people here who have just not yet grown together enough with no everyone sitting in the right place. That is the aim now. But, despite believing that Mercedes GP will have a better season this year, Rosberg reckons it’s Red Bull who will lead the way. No matter what the rules look like, Red Bull will remain strong. They have the expertise and structure in place to be the best. 20 FEBRUARY, 2012

GOOD MORNING!

9:30

6:15 is when I wake up! The first thing I do when I open my eyes, is to look at my daughter’s face. I believe one must have a good beginning in the morning, as it reflects on the rest of the day. Every daughter is special to her mother. I would do anything for her, just to see her happy always. I then have a glass of lemon water – this was advised by my Mom and I have been doing this for long now. It keeps the internal system cool.

I reach home and have my breakfast, by this time. I talk to my husband - Sanjay Sharma for a while, before he leaves to his work. My breakfast includes Idlis, two brown breads, five almonds, some milk and apples. I have a sweet tooth! For weekends, I have an elaborated breakfast (Dosas, Uttappams, a famous Tamil dish called – Idiappams, etc). Breakfast is always at home!

7:40 School bus comes to pick my daughter - Rayna. She studies at Chirec. I have my tea after she leaves and I have a habit of taking it with two spoons of sugar to get that extra sweetness. At the same time, I feel I shouldn’t get addicted to it. I like filter coffees too (back there in Chennai). I then head to gym. While coming back to home, I always have coconut water.

LUNCH AT 1:30 Though I have my lunch out at times, I am a home food lover. I have a wonderful cook at home. Often, I have two rotis; one green vegetable and dal. I do not combine rotis with rice. I love all the vegetables. Dahi Vada is one of my favourite dishes. I play with Romeo (my pet dog) for some time.

‘Sirisha is very close to me. She is like my sister, my best friend. We treat each other like family members. She is someone I look up to, whenever I feel low. She is very protective about me and I feel so secured, when she is around. She encourages me a lot! I am so close to her that I meet her at least once a day. She knows what Rajini is. I am so fortunate to have her in my life’ – Rajini about Sirisha. 28 FEBRUARY, 2012

2:40 I go and pick up my daughter from school. I love the way she waits for me and looks at me from the bus. She runs to me with excitement. That moment is special! I won’t miss this at all. There is no joy equal to this. After I reach home, I will be busy with her. She talks to me about how her day went, at school; what her friends said; her interaction with the teacher and everything that happened at school.

7:30

3:00 – 7:00

Time for dinner with Rayna! I normally have Rajasthani food. Rayna loves Pasta, so I have it thrice a week. She also likes Noodles. From 7:30 – 8:00, it is TV time with her. I put Rayna to sleep by 8. My husband comes home from work and has his dinner, while I sit with him and talk. I play cards or boards with him. Rayna and I sleep early, because we both have to wake up early, every next day. I love ice-creams, so I insist my husband to take me out and visit Cream Stone. He never says ‘no’ to me!

I dedicate this time only for Rayna. I help her out with homework. She likes colouring and sketching. I sit next to her and work on my iPad. She likes Google, though she is four years. She goes for Kathak dance classes during the weekends.

TRAVEL MEMORIES I enjoyed holidaying at Colombo, recently. I like spending time at silent exotic beaches. I had visited all the forest reserves in India. Road journeys are so exciting!

‘The day Rayna was born was the happiest day of my life. It was really special! After that day, my life changed completely. Just like I, she was born in Chennai too. She is equally attached to her Dad and goes out for shopping with him. She is a matured girl’ – Rajini about her daughter, Rayna.

5 THINGS PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME… I am much into religion and spirituality (this is something which not many people around, know).

l

‘Rajini is God’s gifted sister to me. I was a single child to my parents, so I never knew how real sisters would be. But I can say that I wouldn’t have got anyone better than her. I met her seven years back at Hamstech. From then, I have made a special place for her in my heart, which no one can takeover. I cry, laugh, fight and dance with her. There was a time; I didn’t speak to her for almost a year for silly reason. But that only made our relationship stronger, once we got back. I wish we grow together as real sisters. In short, she is my real soul mate’ – Sirisha, about Rajini.

l

I am fascinated about reading books. I’ve been with books all through my childhood – small stories and comics (Archies). The Alchemist is one of the best books I read so far. Jeffrey Archer and Arundhati Roy are my favourite authors.

l

l

l

Dancing has been my passion. I am a huge fan of Madhuri Dixit and have performed all her dance tracks. Sometimes, I would take a workshop in Chennai and wherever it happens in the city.

I love watching movies. But I stick to genres like romantic comedies. I like George Clooney and Ryan Reynolds. As a little girl, I used to watch WWF and was a big admirer of wrestlers like Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan. I have learned Karnatic music in Chennai. I love to have more exotic pets (crabs, turtles). I travel quite often. Gardening is one of my hobbies.

MOVIE REVIEW

M O V I E S

The old Sherlock would stand rooted to the spot! Magnifying glass in one hand and tobacco pipe in the other, the new Sherlock Holmes (played by Robert Downey Jr.) never stays still. The glass and the pipe are gone now. He would rather get in a fight, than a discussion. He changes elaborately costumed disguises as often as, he changes his mind. Everything distracts Sherlock - women, weather, cops, cats and even illicit substances. You name it and he is already up, down and all over it. And then, there is Holmes’ rather complicated man and his long-time partner in crime-busting - Doctor Watson (Jude Law). The obligatory sequel, A Game of Shadows continues to mash-up. A Game of Shadows is definitely a guilty-pleasure blast to experience at the time and perhaps difficult to remember afterwards. Holmes cross dresses on more than one occasion. Watson gets blotto at his bachelor party at a casino and barely makes it to his wedding with Mary (Kelly Reilly), the next day. It goes without saying that Holmes invites himself, along with the couple’s European honeymoon. There is also mixed business involving Russian Cossacks, anarchist terrorists, a nude Stephen Fry (he plays Sherlock’s long-lost brother Mycroft), corrupt train conductors and gypsies. Holmes purists will be relieved to learn that the best scene in the picture is the one element of Sherlock legacy, which has not been tampered with in any way. When first published in the 1890s, a classic encounter between Holmes and Moriarty at the mouth of a waterfall high in the Swiss Alps, had millions of author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s loyal readers gasping for breath.Ritchie handles the build-up to this crucial sequence by brilliantly and skilfully increasing tension levels before achieving a famously intriguing payoff. If there is to be a third instalment to the Sherlock Holmes series, the standard set by this cracking scene is what Ritchie and his team should be pushing themselves to match. Kate Beckinsale is back as Selene, the death trader. This time around, Selene escapes captivity to discover that she has visions of mysterious kinds. Her captors let her loose in the hope that she will lead them to the one who helped her escape in the first place. As she fights off cops and bad guys, Selene runs into a helpful vampire David (James), who helps her rescue scared little teenager - Eve. Eve’s identity, Selene’s visions that lead her to Eve and the link between the two is what the movie is all about. The film’s plot which attempts to surprise you at certain junctures, is completely unaided by the cheesy dialogue. The story wavers between avenging the wrong done upon vampires by both humans and Lykons, to being a story of a mother who goes out on her limb (literally) to save a daughter, she never knew she had. The plot seems unoriginal at best and many things remain unexplained. 30 FEBRUARY, 2012

Journey 2 : The Mysterious Island Directed by - Brad Peyton Cast - Dwayne Johnson and Michael Caine The Journey begins when 17-year-old Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) receives a coded distress signal from a mysterious island where no man exists. It is a place of strange life forms, mountains of gold, deadly volcanoes and more than all - an astonishing secret. Unable to stop him from going, Sean’s new stepfather, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), joins the quest. Reached My Destination

By Archana Kapoor Nagpal

“Ego has a voracious appetite, the more you feed it, the hungrier it gets.” - Nathaniel Bronner Jr. It has been two years, we have not met. Last time was when we were departing at Delhi Airport as a procedure of joining different competitive firms. We exchanged our personal email ids and I never realised my email id was a with a typing error. We have been in six years of professional relationship that ended with a small misunderstanding. We never realised that we might not get a chance to clear it. We both had tough ego levels to shed off. In these two years’ work has always kept me busy. There have been instances where I wanted to write to him for his expertise advice but my ego always stopped me. And then one day flying to Bangalore for a conference was taking away my peace of mind. I knew he would be there as a part of the event from his firm.

I asked him, ‘Why this gift?’ He was very humble to answer, ‘This is a small token of friendship to tell how much I missed my friend when I wanted her the most. A small token to represent that even when you were not with me your teachings helped me to work on difficult projects and be where I am today.” I asked inquisitively, ‘But you never wrote to me, if I was so important and helpful.’ He replied, ‘You left me with an email id that is not reachable, may be you missed a letter. I had no number to call you either but when I read your name in the list, I did all these arrangements. We never know when we meet again in life, so this gift is for you my friend.’ Finally, we again departed to our respective destinations but this time with a smile.

I thought to ignore him and behave professionally as an employee. Finally, I entered the conference hall. I was quick enough to realise that he would take over participants attention with his confidence, and all I would do sitting there would be appreciating him, nodding my head as ‘Yes to Yes’ and ‘No to No’.

On my way home, I realised that he had my incorrect email id and still he tried to contact me. I had his correct contact information but I never wrote to him. I wanted him to initiate the conversation. He may thank me today for all but I know, I was not that great. It was too late for me to realise as I have reached my destination but in guilt.

Finally, he approached the podium.

One thing I have learned that we should not take too long to shed our ego. We should not make delays to ask for an apology as it loses its significance. As we say - an apology at the right time can save relationships. ‘I’, ‘me’ and ‘self’ will never let relationships progress in one’s life.

The very first line that fell into my ears was my name as he proceeded, “I am proud to be here with 8 years of experience and I would like to share my best practices with all of you. This is a journey I completed with one of my best colleague and my best friend ‘my name’ who supported me through day and night with the toughest projects and killing deadlines”. For a moment I fell numbed and completely lost. All I could recollect were my thoughts for him before entering the room and his greatness to acknowledge my presence. Finally, the conference ended and we all left for refreshment. I was struggling hard to face him. I saw him coming towards me with a gift.

SANJJANAA

ARCHANA GALRANI On a rendezvous, Sanjjanaa reveals her journey as a model to becoming an actress and admits to attaining success at a tender age. She admits being a gadget freak and she is the first proud actress in the country to have an official application offered by Apple for ipads and iphones named “Sanjjanaa” Sanjjanaa hails from I am a north Indian. My Dad is from Mumbai and Mom is from Chennai. They settled down in Bangalore, so I was born and bought up there. When did you decide to get into acting I hated books! I am still doing my BBM final year through correspondence and I wanted to be independent. To be honest, I was lucky initially. I was the biggest tom-boy in my class, back in school. I transformed myself into a model during college days, because I was lean and tall. After that, acting offers haunted me down.

How did your family react to your decision of becoming an actress They never wanted me to be in this field because they had heard only bad things about the film industry. I lived in my grandmother’s house for a few months, during my Kannada debut. My grand mom supported me as I was her favourite. However, today my parents are proud of me and we are a happy family. Which movie of yours you like the most and why -

Sanjjanaa with Mohan Lal When did you get your first acting project It was an Indian jewellery advertisement, when I was in my 11th standard followed by Fasttrack cooling glass advertisment with John Abraham that really shot to fame. 36 FEBRUARY, 2012

Mylaari (with Shivarajkumar) gave me immense satisfaction as an actress and it was also the biggest break I got in the kannada industry. But I strongly believe “the best is yet to come.”

TULIP

COVER STORY

How has been your journey so far Post Mylaari, My recent Kannada block buster hit with Shivrajkumar, I am enjoying every bit in this movie industry. Now that I understand the difference between a good and a bad movie, I have genuine friends in the industry and learning to be a better performer. It’s been fun and positively challenging. Your favourite co-star – There are many to mention, honestly! I don’t judge people by success. An actor / actress becomes my favourite, only if he/she is good at heart. In my mind, Shivarajkumar and Trisha are! Which actor do you dream to work with Shahrukh khan and Rajnikanth are my dream heroes. Your favourite actress and why It has to be Trisha. I was a kid during the shoot of Bujjigadu, which also stars Prabhas. I learnt a lot from her and she is a very genuine person. I also look up to Aishwarya Bachchan Rai for managing her carrier so beautifully for 20 great years. What has been your pillar of strength My positive thinking! And many nice new friends in film industry, lately! They gave me opinions on what kind of work I should take up and what I should not.

Your future plans I am 22 now! I entered film industry at the age of 17, so I have all the age by my side. For now, I am working on 4 Kannada movies (Narasimha with Ravichandran; Sagar with Prajwal Devaraj; Ondhu Kshanadalli with Tarun Chandra and Rebel with Aditya) and one Malayalam movie with the Malayalam demi god Mammootty titled King and Commissioner directed by Shahji Kailash. I have already had 11 releases in Kannada and Telugu and finally I feel that I am doing the kind of work that I always desired. So it’s just going to be me and my carrier for the next 5 years, at least. Your fitness secret I hate going to gym. I get bored of gymming the very second day so I Play Batmintton, go for Yoga, dance and Aerobics classes and most importantly; I watch my diet. No carbs after 6 pm! Beauty products you swear by I love skin creams by Estee Lauder and make-up by Bobby Brown, MAC, Shiseido. But I also use various brands for make-up as we don’t get all the shades we want in a single brand. But I believe in only expensive products when it comes to skin. Because if your face skin is ruined it can never be reversed. Any particular movie you wish you had done I admire movies like The Dirty Picture and Arundathi. I am a feminist and I want to do a heroine centric movie of that level. Any plans to enter Bollywood Not really! I am not hunting for offers or knocking doors of Bollywood. If something substantial and worthy comes my way, I will surely be keen. But for now, my hands are too full and I am concentrating on Malayalam and Kannada movies. I don’t believe in being a ‘jack-of-all and master-of-none’ right now I m thoroughly enjoying the success of my Malayalam mega debut Casanova with Mohan Lal.

PRENATAL AND POSTNATAL EXERCISES Although you may not feel like running a marathon, most women benefit greatly from exercising throughout their pregnancies. But during that time, you’ll need to discuss your exercise plans with your doctor or other health care provider early on and make a few adjustments to your normal exercise routine. The level of exercise recommended will depend, in part, on your level of pre-pregnancy fitness… Is exercise during pregnancy safe? In general, exercise is safe for women with normal pregnancies who have no pre-existing health problems, but you should always get approval from your doctor before starting any fitness program. Why should a woman exercise during pregnancy? According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists It helps reduce backaches, constipation, bloating and swelling. It gives energy, improves mood and posture, promotes muscle tone, strength and endurance and helps sleep better. The perfect Pregnancy workout targets specific muscle groups and adds these additional features – Develops mental discpline to control labor pain. Tones lower body to handle the demands of labor and birth. Strengthens your upper body to lift and hold your baby after birth. Increases muscle tone to make it easier to lose weight after the baby is born. What exercises are safe during pregnancy? The safest and most productive activities are swimming, brisk walking, indoor stationary cycling, step or elliptical machines and low-impact Aerobics (taught by a certified Aerobics instructor). These activities

‘Firstly, it is important always to consult a Gynecologist before opting for any exercise - pre-natal or post-natal. Tennis and Racquetball are generally safe activities, but changes in balance during pregnancy may affect rapid movements. Other activities such as jogging can be done in moderation, especially if you were doing them before your pregnancy. You may want to choose exercises or activities which do not require great balance or coordination, especially later in pregnancy. What exercises should be avoided during pregnancy? There are certain exercises and activities which can be harmful if performed during pregnancy. They include: • Holding your breath during any activity. • Activities where falling is likely (such as skiing and horseback riding). • Sports such as soft-

Warning signs during exercise -

BENEFITS OF PRENATAL YOGA Yoga is also beneficial because it helps you learn to breathe deep and relax, which will come in handy as you face the physical demands of labor, birth and motherhood. In fact, one of the first things you learn in a yoga class is how to breathe fully. The breathing technique known as ujjayi requires you to take in air slowly through your nose, filling your lungs and exhale completely until your stomach compresses. Learning how to do ujjayi breathing primes you for labor and childbirth by training you to stay calm when you need it most. When you’re in pain or afraid, your body produces adrenalin and may produce less Oxytocin, a hormone that makes labor progress. A regular yoga practice will help you fight the urge to tighten up when you feel pain and show you how to relax instead. The benefits of yoga aren’t limited to your physical well-being. Taking a prenatal yoga class is a great way to meet other pregnant women — to become part of a community. Being in a positive, supportive environment with others like you can give you a regular emotional boost and keep you motivated to continue exercising.

HYDERABAD PRIMEVAL

By Aditya Tej

Looking back to the copious culture and the days gone by…

Much to my retrospection and as one may feel, a few even today sport that distinctive Hyderabadi laidback attitude and lifestyle, which are addictive likewise! What I am also getting at is, many of the city’s archaic wonders and attractions have remained unaffected till this modern day which certainly is more than a matter of admiration. The efforts rendered in asserting the same, chime in every inch of a construction. Let us take a look at the history less known, the people who mattered the most, why time went by so slow during those days and of course, life of a true Nizami –

ANCIENT HISTORY Before the city’s actual historical, the area where Hyderabad would ultimately be established was under the rule of several kingdoms, including those of Buddhist and Hindu royalty. It came under rule by the kings of the Chalukya kingdom, whose feudal chieftains - the Kakatiyas, splintered off to create their new kingdom and established it around Warangal. In 1321 AD, the Sultanate of Delhi under the command of Muhammad Bin Tughluq brought Warangal to its knees, resulting in anarchy in the whole region. The next few decades saw the battles for supremacy for the region among the Bahmani Sultanate, the Masunuri Nayakas and the Vijayanagara Rayas, which finally ended with the Bahmani Sultanate exerting control by the middle of the 15th century.

MUHAMMAD QULI QUTB SHAH (1580 – 1611) FOUNDER OF HYDERABAD…

T

he fifth sultan of the Qutb Shahi Dynasty of Golkonda in South India! He was the one to build Charminar as well in 1591 AD, shortly after he had shifted his capital to Golkonda, to what now known as Hyderabad. An able administrator, his reign and legacy was considered one of the high points in his dynasty. After ascending his throne at a young age of just 17, he ruled for around 30 years. He was the only one to design and model the city of Hyderabad completely, on his words – ‘unparalleled in the world and a replica of heaven itself.’ Charminar is the exact replica of tombs of Martyrs - Hasan and Hussain at Karbala, known as Taboot, which is considered very sacred. While laying the foundation stone of Charminar, Md. Quli Qutub Shah prayed for welfare of the people in their contemplated new city. The structure of Charminar comprises four tall and massive minarets connected to each other by four high arches and this resembles the archetypal

44 FEBRUARY, 2012

triumphal arch. This beautiful colossus in granite, lime, mortar and pulverized marble, was at one time the heart of the city. Primarily, the wondrous monument with its four arches was so proportionately planned that the beautiful Charminar monument could be impressively seen from the top of Golconda fort. One could even catch a glimpse of the bustling Hyderabad city as these Charminar arches were facing the most active royal ancestral streets. Muhammad Quli built Charminar to commemorate the start of building construction works for his new city of Hyderabad. He was said to have prayed for the end of a plague epidemic that was ravaging his city and vowed to build a masjid at a place nearby, where he was praying. The epidemic ended soon afterwards and Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah ordered the construction of the Makkah Masjid in 1596. This great tribute looks sturdy and solid from a distance but as one moves closer, it emerges as an elegant and romantic edifice proclaiming its architectural eminence in all its detail and dignity. Charminar looks equally spectacular at night when it is illuminated. Apart from being the core of the city’s cultural milieu, it has become a brand name. Each minaret has four stories, marked by a delicately carved ring around the minaret. Unlike the Taj Mahal, Charminar’s four fluted minarets are built into the main structure. Inside the minarets 149 winding steps guide the visitor to the top floor, the highest point one can reach, which provides a panoramic view of the city.

The State of Hyderabad (1724-1956) was made a part of Mughal Empire in 1680s. It became a province in 1724 and was controlled by the Nizams. It became a princely state of British India in 1798. In 1947, when India’s partition took place, the Nizam of Hyderabad decided not to join India or Pakistan. In September 1948, Indian army invaded the state and merged into Indian union. The map of Hyderabad again changed in 1956, during the reorganization of Indian states and was divided into Andhra (later Andhra Pradesh) and Bombay state (later Bombay state was split into Maharashtra and Gujarat) and Mysore State (later renamed as Karnataka). The 232 years of Nizam Dominion had come to an end.

HILL FORT PALACE The young prince of Nizam VII - Moazzam Jah, used to reside in the spectacular Hill Palace, which was built in the year 1915 by Sir Nizamat Jung. Sir Nizamat Jung (an asthma-patient), was advised to live in open confines, in a dust-free environment. The prince then built this palace, with an amazing view of the Hussain Sagar Lake and the Bella House, built in 1905. The cost of the palace came to around one lac rupees, which was a huge amount at that time. After Sir Nizamat Jung’s decision to live a more sober life, as a result of his visit to Mecca, he decided to sell his property to Hyderabad’s Nizam at a price of Rupees, which was the cost of its construction. Later, the Junior Prince used to stay in the palace with his wife, Niloufer, niece of the last caliph of Turkey. The Prince was a poet and it is well reflected in the poetic ambience of the palace with its nocturnal courts. The palace served as an office for the Development Commissioner of Hyderabad, for some time and was later in 1955, converted into a hotel under Ritz group of hotels.

MAKKAH MASJID It is one of the oldest mosques in Hyderabad. It is a listed heritage building in the old city of Hyderabad close to the historic landmarks of –

SPECIAL Chowmahallah Palace and Laad Bazaar. The three arched facades have been carved from a single piece of granite, which took five years to quarry. More than 8000 workers were employed to build the mosque. Quli Qutb Shah personally laid the foundation stone of the mosque. The construction was later completed by Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb after conquering Hyderabad. At the peak of the minarets flanking the mosque is an arched gallery and above that a smallish dome and a spire.

OSMAN ALI KHAN The Exalted Highness... The Nizam is widely believed to have remained as the richest man in South Asia until his death in 1967, though his fortunes fell to US$1 billion by then and became a subject of multiple legal disputes between bitterly fighting rival descendants. His wealth included a vast private treasury. Its coffers were said to contain £100m in gold and silver bullion and a further £400m of jewels. Among them was the fabulously rare Jacob diamond, valued at £60m today and used by the Nizam as a paperweight. There were pearls, too – enough to pave Piccadilly – hundreds of race horses, thousands of uniforms, tonnes of royal regalia and Rolls-Royces by the dozen. He built the Hyderabad House in Delhi which is now used for diplomatic meetings by the Government of India.

MODERN HISTORY RISE OF THE NIZAMS

I

n 1724, Mir Qamar-ud-Din Siddiqi was granted the title of Nizam-ulMuk (meaning Administrator of the Realm) by the Mughal emperor as viceroy tasked to oversee parts of the Mughal Empire in behalf of the emperor. He intermittently ruled under the title of Asaf Jah and defeated a rival official in order to establish control over Hyderabad. During this time, viceroys and governors of Hyderabad have gained

a considerable autonomy from the seat of power at Delhi and when the Mughal Empire finally crumbled down in the mid 18th century, the young Asaf Jah declared himself independent and the dynasty of the Nizams was established. It would not take long before the Nizams quickly surpassed the Mughals in the domination of the southern parts of India, with their dominion hitting as high as 125 million acres (roughly 510,000 square kilometers). In the two centuries that the Nizams ruled over Hyderabad, there were a total of seven Nizams, excluding the 13 years where the three sons of Asaf Jah I ruled after him;

the three sons were not officially recognized as rulers (and thus, did not get the title of Nizam). During these two centuries, Hyderabad saw immense growth again, both culturally and economically. It finally became the capital with the old one - Golconda, becoming all but abandoned. Hyderabad’s cultural glory was again established, especially since the Nizams themselves were great patrons of literature, art, architecture and food. The Nizams themselves were counted as among the wealthiest people in the world; in fact, the last Nizam is ranked as the fifth wealthiest people in the history of the world today, with his fortune at its highest pinned at US$225 billion, adjusted to today’s value. 46 FEBRUARY, 2012

As the violence spiraled out of control, the newly established Indian government initiated a police action called Operation Polo. Five days later, the Nizam’s army surrendered and the Nizam signed the Instrument of Accession, integrating Hyderabad into the Indian union as a state.

SALAR JUNG MUSEUM It is the third largest museum in India housing the biggest one-man collections of antiques in the world! It is well known throughout India for its prized collections belonging to different civilizations dating back to the 1st century. Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Salar Jung III (1889-1949), former Prime Minister of the seventh Nizam, spent a substantial amount of his income over thirty five years to make this priceless collection, his life’s passion. The collections left behind in his ancestral palace, ‘Diwan

eventually won the friendship of the western invaders without giving up their powers. As a result, Hyderabad was still ruled by a Nizam and it became the largest princely state of India. As a princely state, Hyderabad had its own currency, railways, mint and postal system. The citizens enjoyed no income tax. When India finally gained its independence in 1947, the Nizam at that time made known his intention to become independent, either by gaining dominion status by the British Empire or as a sovereign ruler. The Nizam signed a Standstill Agreement with the Indian Union which, by this time, had surrounded him on all

Old timers believe that the present collection constitutes only half of the original art wealth collected by Salar Jung III. His employees siphoned off part of it, since Salar Jung was a bachelor and depended upon his staff to keep a vigil.

CHARMINAR AND GOLKONDA Well, the city now is not the way it was before. Not one bit in any aspect! Right from political laws, principles to personal lifestyles, things have all changed. The city of pearls underwent transformation! Charminar these days is identified more like a shopping destination during festive seasons, particularly during Ramadan, when most of the places to shop at, are open till wee hours - with the ancient layout of a few spots dominated by an ordinary man’s everyday necessities, for a living. Visiting here after sunset is a sheer visual delight as the lanes are well decorated with funky streetlights. A few believe that there is nothing that one cannot find at Charminar. The place is more crowded, noisy and one can also find delicious, regional fast food. Not-too-healthy as one may consider, but people have been enjoying delicacies like – Chaat, Biryanis, Mirchi Bajjis, Jalebis and other. Golkonda fort is one of a kind too! One can get a dramatic view of it when visited after sunset – with lights of different colours emerging out, through every door and window. Image Courtesy : LIFE FEBRUARY, 2012 47

alentines’ Day is what February is made of! Planning romantic surprises for loved ones / spouses; right from the start of this month is something we do naturally. The way this day makes us feel is something mere words can’t express. So special an occasion we look forward to, with a hope to make it a memory cherished forever... 48 FEBRUARY, JANUARY, 2012 2012

Love only grows by sharing. You can have it more for yourself, only by giving it away…

TULIP

SPECIAL

You do not judge the one you really love. It’s a journey through which; we lose and we find ourselves, all over again… Everyday should be a day to love, to show someone how much you love and care. It is in the small things - a hug, a smile or doing something which makes them happy. Valentines’ Day could also be a day of saying thank you to the one you love. Not necessarily in spoiling them with a romantic dinner or by presenting most expensive gifts, but by just making time - to sit, talk, maybe cuddle, forgetting about time and worries for a few hours and making it extraordinary with memories. We are so engrossed into our professional lives these days (a little too much than we should) – spending time together is something which is really needed. Each second of life is a blessing and a miracle for people who are truly in love. Time, patience, love and words of affection are the most precious things to gift your loved ones, which is like giving a part of your life which cannot be taken back. Being in love is such a phase that the happiness of the person you love, is essential for your own happiness. It comes to my mind that why do lovers want one day, when they express their love and think that’s the only day; when love is always in the air? I feel – love exists in each and every moment we spend with our loved ones. We must show our love to the fullest and be grateful for their presence in our lives, which makes it a whole lot beautiful. So why not close your eyes and imagine how beautiful your world is in the presence of your loved one and why not appreciate it, always? If love is deep and genuine, there exists a constant burning desire within for that one we love and it lasts forever. Therefore, according to me; more than a day of love, it has to remain for a lifetime. Life, as we know goes on and will keep going on. What we treasure the most; are the memories we share with our loved one(s) and not letting the rush of life nor its lows and highs take over. These days, we observe Valentines’ Day with a different eye. So much that we wish our immediate family members and close friends as well. There is something about this day! One who does not have a Valentine, but is in love with someone; silently visualize spending time with her/him, on this day – and this is one of the sweetest factors. Being in love is the most beautiful gift one could hold. Through love, we live in a different world altogether and look at things around us with a milder and a beautiful perspective. We carry a mindset entirely different and feel more confident about ourselves. It’s amazing the way time flies by when we are in love, which otherwise is a matter of intolerance. Even the worst of times or longest of days, seem so easy to handle. A pain while walking longer distance turns into a pleasure, as the magic of being in love overpowers any hurdle. Love makes you do things which you wouldn’t do otherwise and things which you normally hate doing. It is the only gift one can present and receive the same in return. We do just anything for the one we love! There is always someone in your life refusing to leave your heart – as they are in for a purpose and are meant to stay forever.

We welcome someone in our lives, not to make them fall in love with us, but to let them feel that they are so much worth loving… Celebrate Valentines Eve with your loved one at Haldi - Candle lit dinner and wine. Love in the air!

A perfect setting to express your love – under the canvas of a star lit sky, exotic food coupled with sparkling wine!

Here are a few must have college trends for all you stylish girls out there... Winter is one of the best seasons to dress up and flaunt off all your chic jackets. But this winter is not about boring hooded jackets. This year, winter has ultra stylish quilted jackets, trench coats and shrugs. Shrugs of all sorts - long, short or cropped in bright colours like blue, red and pink are very fast catching. Even woolen shrugs and jackets are very chic. Rugged and worn out denims are a few things which will never go out of fashion. We have seen all the Bollywood beauties from Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra to Deepika Padukone wear them and they are favourites in the campus as well. You can either buy rugged jeans or cut out an old pair of jeans - both ways to make it look equally stylish. Geek glasses are another big fashion trend among girls. Don’t be frightened to mix geek glasses with other styles as well. Urban or hippie - whatever your flavour is, the glasses will work with it all. Just let the glasses do the talking!

the age old famous fashion accessories. Threaded bangles are new among college going girls. You find them in huge colourful variety and such bangles go well with all sorts of ensembles. Big bags too, are highly chosen accessories among teens. Not only do they help in carrying all your books and makeup, but also makes you look more stylish. Big bags in bold colours like red, orange or bright pink are in vogue along with multi-coloured prints and patch work. Wedged flip-flops are must haves in a college goer’s wardrobe. They are comfortable, yet easy to wear. They are a perfect blend of casual and glam.

Wear bright! Feel and flaunt the season’s best and always remember to keep it simple and stylish!

The mantra for the season is bright or multi coloured accessories. Let it be threaded bangles or big colourful bags! Bangles are FEBRUARY, 2012 51

DAZZLING JEWELS Jewellery has always been one of the most important factors in a bride’s outfit. It adds a beautiful finishing touch to your wedding look, and while your dress and veil will be boxed up after your big day, your bridal jewellery will become a keepsake for years to come and should be something you can wear time and time again. But where do you start? Here are our top tips when it comes to choosing your bridal jewellery... STRAPLESS DRESS

The neckline on a strapless dress is a blank canvas when it comes to choosing your bridal jewellery, as any style of jewellery will complement it. However, it is important to consider any detailing and embellishment on your gown and jewellery which won’t distract from it. Our suggestion for a heavily detailed dress would be not to wear a necklace but to go for a pair of statement earrings with a matching bracelet instead.

SPAGHETTI STRAP DRESS

With spaghetti strap dresses, the straps and the shape they make across your shoulders, are the key features of the design. So it is important to choose a necklace, which compliments them rather than distracts from them. A delicate pendant necklace teamed with a beautifully elegant bracelet would be our top recommendation.

BOLERO/SHRUG OVER DRESS

If you are going to wear a bolero or shrug with your dress, we would recommend choosing a pair of beautiful statement earrings and a gorgeous multistrand bracelet for the perfect bridal jewellery. However, if you are intending to remove your bolero or shrug at some point during the day, why not swap your earrings for a dramatic necklace to transform your look from day to evening?

OFF-THE-SHOULDER DRESS

There is a lot of décolletage on show with this style of dress so you don’t really have much for your bridal jewellery to compete with. You could therefore go for any style you wish. However, always bear in mind the level of detail on the dress. For a very simple dress with little or no embroidery, we would recommend a delicate necklace teamed with matching earrings, to compliment the simplicity.

SCOOP NECK DRESS

A scoop-neck on a dress is another versatile choice when it comes to choosing your bridal jewellery, as all necklace shapes will compliment the neckline. Our favourites for a scoop-neck dress would be a dramatic pendant drop necklace teamed with a single-strand pearl bracelet, which will complete your wedding look perfectly and elegantly. 52 FEBRUARY, 2012

SWEETHEART DRESS

With a sweetheart neckline, the neckline is almost an accessory in itself and flatters the bride’s neck and shoulders beautifully on its own. One therefore has to be careful not to over-accessorise it with elaborate bridal jewellery and instead complement the shape. A sweetheart bodice looks stunning with a pendant necklace and matching earrings, which mirror the shape of the neckline. TARAMATI BARADARI Taramati Baradari pavilion has 12 doorways and was constructed to allow cross ventilation and is one of the most indigenous techniques to have been used at that time. The open pavilion includes other facilities like an air-cooled theatre with capacity of 500 people, open-air auditorium with capacity of 1600 people, Banquet Hall with capacity of 250, and multi-cuisine restaurant. The monument itself is comprised of a music hall with twelve entrance ways that served as the auditorium. To make sure that the sound would not be diluted by the heavy population of the surrounding area, the Taramati Baradari was placed on top of a hill. Its hall is semi-arched and huge, opening into an art gallery that also doubles as a banquet hall whenever the need arises. Perfect attention was devoted to the acoustics of the palace, making it comparable to the one in the area of Bala Hissar, in Afghanistan. Due to the monument’s good acoustics and its history (after all, Tamarati was known to dedicate her life to music and dance), Taramati Baradari is a monument that has become dedicated to classical music and folk art dance forms.

BIRLA MANDIR CHARMINAR – Jewel of Hyderabad

Often called Arc De Triomphe of the East, Charminar was built by Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah. The great monument is a synonym for Hyderabad and the pivot around which the glory and history of the city has developed. Well it won’t be wrong to say that this 400 year old city of Hyderabad will seem incomplete without the Charminar the same way as Moscow without the Kremlin or New York without the Statue of Liberty. At the very first look and from a distance Charminar would seem to be sturdy and solid but as moving near it would emerge as an elegant and romantic edifice ready to mesmerize every spectator with its architectural brilliance and eminence. Charminar has become a true brand name of beauty.

The temple manifests a blend of South Indian Rajasthani and Utkala temple architectures. In its entirety, it is made of 2000 tons of pure Rajasthani white marble. The granite of the presiding deity is about 11 ft (3.4 m) tall and a carved lotus forms an umbrella on the roof. There is a brass flagstaff in the temple premises which rises to a height of 42 ft (13 m). The temple complex overlooking the southern side of Hussain Sagar offers a magnificent panoramic view of the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. It presents a colorful and spectacular sight when illuminated at night. The intricate carvings of the temple, the ceiling and the mythological figures are a standing testimony to the dexterity and sculptural excellence of the craftsmen. Beautiful scenes from the great epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata are finely sculpted in pure white marble. Lotus shaped canopy at the top of the idol is again done in marble and looks stunning.

GOLCONDA Golconda is the name given to a city in India which was formerly a center of the diamond trade. Golconda also denotes a rich mine or any source of great wealth. Golconda Fort epitomizes the opulent new culture of the time. The fort is considered as a hallmark of excellence in military architecture. Golconda Fort is one of the grandest forts in India. It is also considered as one of India`s most outstanding fortresses and it epitomizes the Nawabi culture and military architecture due to the bulk of the ruins of this fort that date from the time of the Qutub Shahi kings, who had ruled this area in the 16th and 17th century. The defenses of this fort were so strong that no known attack of the time could penetrate its strong fortifications. Though this fort in a state of shambles it yet continues to mystify everyone with its architecture and historical significance.

TAJ FALAKNUMA PALACE Falak-numa literally means Like The Sky or Mirror of the Sky in Urdu. It is one of those very few seven star hotels and is tipped to be one of the grandest of all palace hotels in India. Ten years of extensive and sensitive renovations have infused new life into this precious jewel which has been passed on for generations. A historical landmark and once the residence of the sixth Nizam Mehboob Ali Khan, The Taj Falaknuma Palace now offers a tranquil oasis for discerning travelers. Nestled amidst 32 acres of land, this rare blend of Italian and Tudor design is famous for its opulent architecture. Its exquisite, yet distinct, guestrooms and suites offer a glimpse of imperial lifestyle. With its close proximity to important landmarks, and major thoroughfares, it is the perfect choice for both the business traveler to this technology hub, or for the visitor seeking to uncover the city’s fascinating history.

QUTB SHAHI TOMBS Nowhere in the world are there so many tombs in one place as here. You will find more than 20 tombs at one place, these tombs are famous as Seven Tombs. These tombs erected in memory of the departed kings of Golconda are truly magnificent monuments that have stood the test of time and the vagaries of nature. These imposing marvels of architectural excellence stand as solemn reminders of the grandeur and glory of Golconda and the great kings who are buried here. These tombs mark a unique architectural style which is a mixture of Persian, Pathan and Hindu forms. Thae arcades on all the sides and the pointed arches add to their beauty and grace. The galleries of the smaller tombs are of a single storey while the larger ones are two storied. In the centre of each tomb is a sarcophagus which overlies the actual burial vault in a crypt below. The domes were originally overlaid with blue and green tiles, of which only a few pieces now remain. The tombs were once furnished with carpets, chandeliers and velvet canopies on silver poles. Qurans were kept on supports and readers recited verses from the holy book at regular intervals. Golden spires were fitted over the tombs of the Sultans to distinguish their tombs from those of other members of the royal family.

WALKING DOWN THE AISLE TOGETHER

By Aditya Tej

On an up-close interview, shy but adorable couple - DIVYA and KAPIL KATARA talk to TULIP about how and where they met first before falling in love, their marriage and welcoming their daughter Heer...

Home is where my heart is… DIVYA – There is something about Hyderabad! The city has a pleasant charm. I like this place and I don’t wish to leave. This is where I was born and educated. I feel Hyderabad is safest, when compared to other cities. I like the coffee parlours here – Beyond Coffee, Bistro and many more. Bowling at SVM mall is so relaxing after a stressful day. KAPIL – I am with my family business, which is into finance and capital market. After hectic work schedules, I love hanging out with friends. Divya and I have many things in common. We both love watching movies. Total movie buffs! We love attending parties too.

Family and friends make life more beautiful… DIVYA – I met Kapil through our common friends and cousins. We added each other on MSN and communicated there for several days. It was on my birthday and for the first time; Kapil somehow attained my contact number from one of my friends and wished me. After that, we got closer and developed a deeper bond for each other. We started going for movies. Just a few days before our engagement, Kapil got a tattoo of my name on his back, which reads – DK (Divya Katara). My Dad was impressed with this and said – only the one who truly loves you, will do this and no one else. He wanted me to get married to him and I had only Kapil in my mind. Our families met soon and it was a love-arranged marriage. KAPIL – I first met her in 2004. We remained friends for the initial six to eight months, after we met. Like Divya said, we have a huge group of friends with whom we used to hang out. 58 FEBRUARY, 2012

TULIP

KINSHIP I am very close to my Dad more than anyone else in my family. I have a younger brother too. It is a small family! My Dad is my best friend. He never refused to get me what I want and I was much pampered. He gets whatever I want! I get along very well with Kapil’s sister. She is more like a sister to me. Kapil is very helpful. Even after marriage, he supported me in pursuing my post-graduation. KAPIL – I am close to my Dad too. Whatever I am now, is all because of him. He is an inspiration to me and I share everything with him. He is highly disciplined and I always wanted to be like him. I consider myself fortunate enough to have seen almost all the places, all across India. We believe in God and are religious. We visit temples quite often. Our holiday trips to Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket; a year after we got married, will remain memorable.

Welcoming my baby daughter, Heer – KAPIL - We welcomed Heer with a small cake cutting ceremony. I wanted my baby to be born healthy, so I went to Shirdi and offered my prayers. My prayers were answered and are blessed with a beautiful baby. She is just a month young now! We are planning to take her to Tirupathi as well, in near future.

DIVYA – Once, I was on a holiday trip to Sri Lanka with my friends. I was surprised when I realized that even Kapil was on a holiday to Sri Lanka with his friends. We met there also! Though it was a huge group of his friends and mine there, we couldn’t talk to or see each other much. That was the time when we really missed each other. The tattoo he got on his back was when we returned to India from Sri Lanka. We were engaged in July 2005 and got married in February 2006. I travelled more with family, before I got married – South Africa, Singapore and many other places. I also travelled to Europe and Australia with friends.

Kapil about Divya – All 5 years have been so good! She is very patient and understanding. She never wants to hurt anyone. One of the best things about our relation is, we have similar likes and dislikes. We hate Thai food, we hate getting up early in the mornings, we sleep late in the nights and we love long drives in the night. We both are equally lazy and total foodies. If there is any new restaurant opened in the city, we are one of those first to try out food there. When it comes to shopping, she is brand conscious. She likes designer handbags, shoes and accessories. She is a wonderful cook, though she cooks less (laughs). She makes yummy Italian food at home. She is a coffee lover and likes attending kitty parties in the city.

Divya about Kapil – He goes beyond his limit to help his close buddies. He has a group of friends, with whom he is very close. He takes time to mingle and make friends with new people. He gets what he wants, so he is a little stubborn that way. He hates it when I go alone for shopping and wants to give me his time and presence, while I shop. During our recent trip to Bangalore, we had seen so many places in so less time. This February, we are planning to travel to China, Hong Kong and Makau. FEBRUARY, 2012 59

Inspired primarily by a sketch of stylish wingless birds, the game was first released for Apples, in December 2009. Since that time, the game has become a huge hit among all age groups. You will find angry bird merchandise like T-Shirts, mugs, key chains, phone cover and soft toys. Kids love these wingless birds so much that now you find cakes, candies and lollipops designed as angry birds.

CAKE POPS 1) 2) 3) 4) 5)

1 Betty crocker cake mix (and ingredients called for on the box). 1 container Vanilla frosting (or your favorite flavor) candy melts (white, black, red, yellow, green, blue). Lollipop sticks. White chocolate chips or white jumbo sprinkles (for eyes). Black decorating gel or black edible ink pen (for black in eyes). Black licorice foam block for drying and displaying cake pops.

Directions : 1)

Bake cake according to package directions. Let cool.

2)

Once cake is cooled, crumble cake into a fine mixture using your hands.

3)

Pour crumbled cake into a large bowl and mix in 3/4 of a container of vanilla frosting.

4)

Mix with a spoon or your hands until thoroughly combined. Roll into desired shape bird.

Melt candy melts according to package directions. Dip lollipop sticks in melted candy melts just slightly and push inside the cake ball. This helps secure the stick in the cake ball. Place in the fridge for about 15 minutes to harden.

6)

Dip and coat hardened cake balls in candy melts and tap stick against the side of the bowl to shake off the excess. Push lollipop stick into the foam block to dry.

7)

Once dry, decorate each bird. I cut yellow candy melts into triangles for the beaks of the birds. I cut orange candy melts for the orange eyebrows or you could use orange sprinkles. Cut the tip off the white chocolate chips so that they are flat and use for the eyes. Cut the black licorice for the wings and feathers of the birds.

8)

For the pigs I used some melted green candy melts and made circles for the nose and ears on some parchment paper and let them harden in the fridge. Use the same technique for the top feather of the red bird and blue bird.

Use additional melted candy melts as glue to attach beak, eyebrows, eyes and feathers.

Paragon Curriculum: A World of Ideas for a Global Education Imagine a school where your child embarks each day on a school wide hands-on journey through the history of great ideas and heroes in world culture.

I

magine the wonder of a total immersion learning environment where the classroom is transformed into the Indus Valley, a Mayan rain forest, ancient Athens, or a Colonial American schoolhouse. From Kindergarten through Grade 12, students explore the world, past and present, including India, Africa, China, Australia, the Middle East, Russia, Europe, Latin America, Canada, the Arctic, and the United States. But, we know that a geographical exploration doesn’t necessarily entail multiculturalism and this is what sets Paragon apart as a world-class curriculum for cultural literacy, intellectual capital, and college preparation.

Imagine the world of diff difference a global l b l education d ti will make for the architects of tomorrow. Paragon teaches about culture, the learned and shared behaviors and traditions of a people that are passed on from generation to generation. Beginning in Grades K – 2, students are exposed to the richness of the world through facets of the cultural prism such as, song, music, dance, art, folklore, myth, famous people, and much more. Take for example, the “gamelan” performance by Kindergarten students as they learn about Balinese culture, or the Middle Eastern “suq” students create in order to trade and exchange goods and ideas after journeying the Silk Road. In the third grade, students are formally introduced to the concept of culture while studying ancient India. Posed with the essential question, “How does culture flow from a river?” students learn the “ten elements of culture”: knowledge, art, food, technology, beliefs, economy,

dress, architecture, government, and behavior. This provides an ongoing, organizational framework for the study of culture, which they build upon for the duration of their Paragon and Paragon Humanities units. Paragon students become experts at piecing together similarities and differences between and among the world’s cultures, and they develop a keen ability for historical and cultural empathy. By stepping into the shoes of those who have inhabited a different time and place, Paragon students see and understand through the perspectives of individuals and diverse groups who have contributed to and shaped world history. Paragon’s multicultural curriculum also develops students’ capacity for higher-order, abstract thinking skills by studying the symbols of humanity. Through the archaeological record and up to present times, they examine writing systems, artifacts of all types, and the human need for expression through ritual. For example, in the abovementioned third grade unit, students travel back in time to the Indus Valley, specifically to the cities of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro. Through a virtual website, they unearth the yet to be deciphered ancient seals of both cities. What do these symbols mean? What was being communicated? Through such learning opportunities, which are integral to Paragon, students are challenged to create meaning, a fundamental process that prepares and will serve them for the rest of their lives. In our globalized, knowledge-based economy, our students need an intellectual framework for understanding the complexity, connections, and continuity between places and cultures, past, present, and future. This will enable them to participate fully in the myriad of personal, social, and civic interactions that they will encounter in our world’s diverse countries and societies. This is the over-arching goal and promise of Paragon’s rich, comprehensive, valuesbased, multicultural curriculum. Imagine the world of difference a global education will make for the architects of tomorrow. Dawn D. Eidelman, Ph.D. | Chief Education Ofcer Mosaica Education, Inc.

That being said, the base BRZ will come with the same 200 HP that the new GT-86 is sporting, bringing these two models closer which originally anticipated. Subaru’s promised 300 HP will be present in the STI version, leading us to believe that a G-Sports variant for the GT-86 will bring forth the same amount of power. This borrowed engine will be mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Despite the long wait, we still have to give the new GT 86 the prize for the most beautiful sports car of the year. Not only is it a sports car, but it also combines elegance with beauty and aggressiveness. The car’s overall shape and design was inspired by the Corolla-based AE86 sports coupe that was unveiled in the 80s. The GT-86 is a compact rear-wheel-drive sports coupe with an aerodynamic body that rides low to the ground to improve handling and allow it to cut through the air with ease. The GT-86’s interior is as sporty as it is outside with a flat-bottomed steering wheel with its very own red stitching. It measures only 365 mm, the smallest yet fitted to a Toyota and has been finished in buckskin finish. In addition to that, the GT-86 also has aluminum pedals, a navigation system, gauges that light with red neon, digital readouts and a gray instrument panel that seamlessly molds into the darker dash. The car’s cockpit is further reinforced by carbon effect trim, a sporting, all-black roof lining, red upholstery stitching and aviation-style rocker switchgear. It comes with a large tachometer that offers at-a-glance visibility and readability during sports driving. The front seat has also been designed to offer great comfort, as well as to prevent elbows from interfering with gearshift operation. SPECIFICATIONS – Displacement – 2.0 Cc, Torque @ RPM – 151 @ 6600, Horse-power @ RPM – 200@7000, 53:47 weight distribution and Wheelbase – 2,570 mm.

PEUGEOT RCZ The RCZ is a racy sports car built on the 308 hatchback’s foundations, but featuring a futuristic coupe body. This front-wheel-drive 2-door can be had with a turbocharged 1.6-litre mated to either a 6-speed manual or automatic, but the manual THP200 version is tuned with much more power than the automatic THP156 model. Standard features include 19-inch alloy wheels, active rear spoiler, electric leather sports seats with memory, leather dashboard, cruise control with speed limiter, CD/MP3 stereo with USB/ iPod connectivity, Bluetooth phone, auto dual-zone a/c, cooled glove box, electric mirrors with automatic-tilting on reverse, power windows, auto-dimming rear-view mirrors, automatic wipers, auto headlights, keyless entry, puncture repair kit, front and rear parking aid with screen display and aluminum pedals. Safety features include front and side airbags, ABS, stability control, front and rear fog lights and hill-start assist on the manual version. The manual THP200 also has slightly sportier suspension tuning, shorter gearing and bigger front brakes. Engine which is derived from the production RCZ, is 1.6 litre 4-cylinder unit generating 246 bhp and 290 Nm of torque, mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox specifically designed for racing. All engines are sealed to ensure equal performance among the competitors and the powertrain is designed to compete for a full season without need for a rebuild. SPECIFICATIONS – The RCZ can be highly specified including features such as electric heated and adjustable seating with driver’s memory, leather seats and dashboard and hill assist function. 64 FEBRUARY, 2012

AUTOMOBILES

SUBARU ADVANCED TOURER CONCEPT Subaru describes its Advanced Tourer as a mid-size wagon designed to combine sporty driving, utility and environmentally friendliness. Power comes from a turbocharged and direct-injected horizontally-opposed boxer engine displacing just 1.6-liters and matched with Subaru’s own Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) technology. Drive is then channeled to all four wheels through a symmetrical all-wheel drive system and CVT. A single motor system is used for its simple structure and light weight. The system has an Electric Vehicle (EV) mode, which allows all-wheel drive motion using only the motor at start-up and on low-speed drives. When decelerating, the regenerating mechanism uses the motor as a power generator. The four-seater model is powered by a downsized 1.6-liter turbocharged flat-four with direct-injection mated and an electric motor that are mated to a continuously variable transmission and Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system. The interior, however, is another matter. Undeniably beautiful, features like the monitor in the

steering wheel and the steel-rimmed wood pedals are treats we won’t be seeing anytime soon. The cabin includes highly stylized bucket seats front and rear along with generous helpings of wood and aluminum trim, all of which has scant chance of making it to production. The biggest news is under the hood, where the Advanced Tourer Concept has a new, downsized 1.6-liter variant of Subaru’s boxer four that employs direct injection and turbo charging. SPECIFICATIONS - The sleek looking station wagon with the taut surface forms is a proposal for a standalone C-segment hybrid model that measures 4,580mm (180.3-in.) long, 1,840mm (72.4-in.) wide and 1,430mm (56.3-in.) tall. Its exterior dimensions place it between the current Impreza (4,415mm long) and the Legacy (4,775mm).

HONDA CBR1000RR Sired by a MotoGP champion and tempered in the fires of world superbike and endurance competition, all- new CBR1000RR Fireblade vividly brings to life searing performance, omniscient control and a thrilling beauty and simplicity of form that sets hearts and minds racing. This Fireblade is an epitome of super sports motorcycle development, delivering unprecedented levels of excitement and enjoyment with revolutionary new technology and breathtaking styling. The new option of the first ever ABS system designed specifically for super sports bikes adds to the feeling of total control that has always been at the heart of CBR1000RR design. It is built with a 999cc liquid-cooled inline four-cylindered engine that has an awesome compression ratio of 12:3:1. It comes with six-speed transmission, adjustable front forks and dual stage fuel injection system. The HondaCBR1000RR peaks performance at 178 hps @13000 rpm.

The ignition is computer controlled transistorized with three dimensional mapping. This version from the Honda got even better with introduction of combined anti-lock braking system and the groundbreaking performance is further accentuated with radial front brakes and 4-spoke ninja-star rear wheel. The incredible performance of this bike sets it apart in the superbike podium with a difference. Every part of this latest version is re-designed and re engineered to minimize weight, including the side stand and wheels. SPECIFICATIONS – Bore X Stroke – 76X55.1 mm, Caster angle – 23’’ 18’, Wheelbase – 1,410 mm, Ground clearance – 130 mm, Maximum torque – 112 Nm / 8,000 min-1 (95/1/EC), Dimension (LxWxH) – 2,080 x 682 x 1,130 mm. SONY ERICSSON HBH PV740 The HBH-PV740 means business and says so in its minimalist design. The black plastic panel at the front of the unit, sports a very subtle faux wood-grain finish, which is attractive but completely indiscernible for people who see you wearing the headset from a distance. Like most Bluetooth headsets, the PV740 has only four buttons for input - a power/pairing button on the underside, a call-handling button on the front and volume keys along the right-hand side. Pertinent information, like battery life remaining; is displayed on a tiny monochrome screen under the call-handling button. Pairing the PV740 to Bluetooth compatible handsets is as easy as this process should be. Turning the headset on for the first time puts the PV740 into pairing mode. Pairing the headset with Sonim XP3 Enduro and Nokia N95 8GB, with both phones; finds the PV740 so effective. Uncompromised performance, great digital sound, status display with power indicator, alternative carrying and charging solutions; all wrapped up in exclusive materials. Use it all day charge easily with the headset desk stand included. Keep an eye on the built-in battery status indicator so you know when to re-charge. Get everything you need in a HBH-PV740 to help you get the best results when you go hands free. PORSCHE DESIGN BLACKBERRY P’9981

SPECIFICATIONS – Integrated GPS, includes BlackBerry maps, MSM 8655 and 1.2 GHz processor, 768 MG RAM memory and 8 GB Emmc, capacitive touch screen, optical track pad, MPEG4, H.264 and H.263 video formats, 35 key backlit keyboard, dedicated keys - send, end (power), menu, escape, camera (user customisable, convenience key), volume up/down (fwd/rwd for media, zoom for camera), mute (play/pause for media) and lock (top center).

BOSE BLUETOOTH HEADSET SERIES 2 Exclusive Bose technologies let you hear calls better, even as noise levels change. Noise-rejecting microphone allows callers to hear more of your voice - in windy and noisy environments too. Soft, flexible StayHear® tip provides comfort and stability. Simple, convenient controls make it easy to answer calls. Choice of left- or right-ear version, whichever you prefer, for best possible fit! The Series 2 is generally dressed in black, with nice finish at that. There is a silver line running around the edges of the headset, partly on the front and partly on the inner side. The call button and the volume controls are on the top panel. The inner side has two LED indicators - battery and connectivity. Nothing on the outside panel, which we have often criticized for being uncomfortable and prone to accidental call disconnects. The Series 2 comes either in the right ear version or the left ear version. Whatever version you pick at the time of purchase, it is a case of living with that decision! We would have appreciated a bit more flexibility, since most other Bluetooth headsets do not have this kind of limitation. The Series 2 does excel where it is supposed to - call quality. No matter what the volume, impressive are the call clarity and the clean audio. Even at volumes above 70%, there is no jarring and neither was the audio treble heavy. SPECIFICATIONS – 4.5 hours talk time, up to 100 hours stand-by time, two active phone connections at once, adaptive audio adjustment and A2DP audio streaming.
